New Flagship for Bering Yachts: The B165

  • By Yachting Staff
  • March 19, 2024

Bering 165

Bering Yachts , known for its steel expedition-style trawler yachts, introduced a new flagship B165 explorer yacht at the Dubai International Boat Show.

“She keeps all the ruggedness, stability, range and all-weather capability while representing a Mediterranean and Caribbean approach to life: easygoing, relaxed and full of comfort,” the company stated in a press release. “You are still traveling in your home, but with so much more open space and fresh air that the onboard life becomes a full-circle indoor and outdoor experience.”

The shipyard describes the B165 as “Bering to the bone, but with a luxury twist.” On the main deck’s elongated after section, there’s a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. Folding bulwarks can expand this relaxation even more, and the pool can be covered for use as stowage for water toys and other equipment. There’s also space here for two tenders.

Inside on the main deck are dining and lounging areas, along with two VIP staterooms. An additional room at the bow can be outfitted as a guest stateroom, or as an onboard cinema.

Bering 165

The owners’ deck has more than 750 square feet of space, including a sleeping area, a head, and a lounge with a bar, table and seating. An open space aft on the owners’ deck has a table for alfresco dining, while at the bow, there’s a hot tub and a lounge. Crew have access to a private service room for preparing and serving meals, with a dumbwaiter that connects to a similar service area on the main deck, and to the galley on the lower deck.

Also on the lower deck are three guest staterooms, four cabins to accommodate eight crew, and a crew mess. An additional cabin on this deck can be used for supernumeraries such as nannies, guides and masseurs.

Up on the bridge deck, there’s a lounge with a bar, an outdoor cinema, a day head and a firepit. The captain’s quarters are here as well.

Above that deck is a crow’s nest with a hardtop where guests can have an unobstructed 360-degree view of the yacht’s surroundings.

Bering 165

Eco-friendly design is also inherent in the Bering 165, according to company founder Alexei Mikhailov: “We are building responsibly. Designing a large engine room, we definitely had alternative energy solutions in mind. There is plenty of space to accommodate hybrid applications and install a big battery bank.”

Power for the 499-gross-ton vessel will be twin 1,300-horsepower Caterpillar C32 engines, with a reported cruise speed of 12 knots and a maximum speed of 15 knots. Fuel capacity is nearly 18,500 gallons, which the team at Bering says gives the B165 a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles. ABT-Trac systems are installed for guest comfort.

Does the Bering Yachts B165 have a steel hull? Yes, with an aluminum superstructure.

Bering 76 sea trial review: The Turkish trawler yacht with globetrotting ambitions

With nearly 23,000 litres of fuel across seven tanks, this is a seriously long-legged boat

  • With 1m seas on the beam, it is surprisingly comfortable, even with the Seakeeper switched off
  • The hoist is capable of handling a 794kg tender
  • The sundeck gets some useful shelter under way from the pilothouse structure
  • In the absence of a main deck helm, the upper station is seriously well equipped
  • The elevated helm enjoys massive views through vertical screens
  • There’s a relaxed lounge directly aft of the helm station
  • The open aft cockpit enjoys plenty of protection from the extended upper deck
  • The saloon decor feels more like that of a luxury motoryacht than an ocean-going passagemaker

The primary dining area sits on the main deck forward

  • Forward and aft zones are split by a central galley and flybridge stairwell

With just three cabins on the lower deck, the space on offer is exceptional

  • The port double gets a neat transverse bathroom
  • A two-tier engineroom puts the engines down and the generators up

A part-completed Bering 76 hull provided two serial boat owners with a blank canvas to create the heavy-displacement adventure yacht of their dreams...

After many years of high-speed cruising in fibreglass planing boats, two experienced owners decided to investigate the possibilities of longer-range adventures in a seaworthy, heavy-displacement craft.

Their new Bering 76, Lemanja , is a full-custom yacht. This would normally have meant a gap of several years between initial consultations and final launch, but the clients were able to reduce this waiting time by taking over a part-completed project at the Bering shipyard.

The 76fter had originally been commissioned by an American owner, and her empty steel hull and aluminium superstructure lay waiting in the shipyard – a blank canvas for the couple to complete.

Bering was founded in 2007 by Russian-born Alexei Mikhailov, who was brought up during the Soviet era in Magadan, just across the Kamchatka Peninsula from the Bering Sea itself. He’s 59.

He built the first six Berings in China but moved his operation to Turkey to take advantage of the market access and relaxed regulatory and tax regime of the Antalya free port, on Turkey’s southern coast.

Although Lemanja is a one-off, Alexei is now focusing his operation on semi-custom yachts, and in particular Bering’s 75ft and 80ft designs. There are currently 14 boats under construction in the yard.

Nordhavn 76 review: Behind the wheel of a globe-trotting trawler yacht

Dave Marsh finds the new four-storey boat from Nordhavn surprisingly easy to manoeuvre

Bering 70 yacht tour: The ultimate long-range steel explorer yacht?

They have big plans. When we caught up with them they had only recently taken delivery but had already done one overnighter down to Cyprus and numerous day trips, getting to grips with their new boat, evaluating her handling, and working out how to manage her numerous systems.

The trip along the length of the Med to Gibraltar was to be essentially a shakedown cruise. After that they plan to head north, calling in at Falmouth en route to the Irish Sea, and then, all being well, onwards to the Faeroes, Iceland, Greenland, Canada and ultimately the US.

It will present quite a learning curve, for Lemanja is a complicated boat. She is built to go to sea, with impressive fuel capacity in seven tanks, and five watertight compartments in her hull, which is of 8mm plate below the waterline and 6mm above. Fully loaded, she displaces close on 150 tonnes.

bering-76-review-MBY290.test_Bering_76_8pg.Bering_76_60

Her battery power is enough to run all on-board services for 12 hours at anchor without using the generators, and she has a Seatorque drivetrain involving flexible shaft couplings, soft engine mounts and a horizontal prop shaft angle, all of which are designed to reduce noise and vibration to the absolute minimum.

The engines are mounted very low down in the hull. So low, in fact, that the engine room is a two-tier affair, with immediate access through the watertight door to the generators and to the technical area in the lazarette, while the twin Cummins diesels lurk beneath the shiny treadplate underfoot.

Apparently it’s just a five-minute job to unscrew the plates if you need to get to them. Lemanja has a long, open-plan main deck arrangement with an informal seating area communicating with the cockpit, an expansive marble-topped bar and galley, and an excellent dining area forward surrounded by windows with a door out to the side deck.

bering-76-review-MBY290.test_Bering_76_8pg.Bering_76_saloon_11

It looks like the interior of a modern motor yacht rather than an ocean passagemaker – my first thought was that the galley worktop could probably benefit from some taller fiddle rails – but it’s down below where the owners’ cruising ambitions are given more expression.

Drafted originally for four cabins, Lemanja has just three, with the entirety of the starboard guest cabin area given over to food storage and refrigeration – a pantry of the size you might find on a superyacht .

Elsewhere on the lower deck Lemanja ’s midships owner’s cabin , forward VIP and port-side guest double all have full-size beds, generous headroom and plenty of stowage space, including an impressive walk-in wardrobe in the master.

bering-76-review-MBY290.test_Bering_76_8pg.Bering_76_Master_suite_4

The double berth in the forward cabin is rather high – the owners wanted it to be a full 6ft (1.83m) wide, which meant it had to go up into the flare of the bow. But as he pointed out, this has provided a lot of extra space beneath the mattress for stowage, in addition to the huge drawers under the foot of the bed.

We met the owners in Antalya early one morning, not far from Bering’s. There is a slightly developing-world aura to the shipyard, as if Western standards of health and safety have yet to make inroads.

This refreshing air of improvisation comes with a downside, of course – you have to watch your step lest you gouge your ankle on an offcut of steel plate, or plunge down an unguarded hatchway – but as a counter, the yard likes all its customers to engage a surveyor to keep a close eye on the build of their yachts.

bering-76-review-MBY290.test_Bering_76_8pg.Bering_76_55

“We insist on having surveyors,” says Alexei. “Captains don’t know enough. We learn a lot from our owners’ surveyors.” They will certainly have learned plenty from Lemanja ’s. When the yacht was launched, his German surveyor found no fewer than 320 snags, mostly minor, but the owners say they were all dealt with efficiently.

Perhaps the most significant concerned the issue of ballast. At the surveyor’s recommendation more than nine tonnes of it were added to Lemanja , low down in the hull, which the owners reckon have stiffened her up considerably.

Lemanja ’s beam of less than 20 feet was specified by the original US client to suit his berth in Florida, and she has quite a slender planform for her length and height. Bering’s 75 semi-custom model, in contrast, is nearly 5ft wider.

bering-76-review-MBY290.test_Bering_76_8pg.Bering_76_20

There was a slightly gloomy quality to our test day, with a grey overcast sky and the snow-capped peaks of the Taurus mountains just inland lending a slight chill to the scene. But conditions were benign enough, and the sea was calm as we set off from Setur Marina for our cruise down to Kemer.

With the wheelhouse on the upper deck so far from the engines we expected it to be quiet but 43dB(A) at ten knots seemed pretty impressive. Progress was calm and very relaxing – just what you want in a long-range cruiser – and we recorded a two-way maximum speed of 11.5 knots, although the owners felt that between 8.5 and 9.5 knots would give the best combination of speed and fuel economy.

Lemanja ’s range is vast – over 4,500nm at 8.6 knots – thanks to her astounding fuel capacity of 22,700 litres. There were limits to what we might learn of her seagoing capabilities on such a mild-mannered day but a few weeks later the owners emailed with an update from Greece.

The Bering 76 is surprisingly comfortable, even with the Seakeeper switched off

With 1m seas on the beam she was surprisingly comfortable, he reported, her roll being manageable even with the Seakeeper switched off. In head seas she was dry and stable.

Big following seas turned out to be her least favourite point of sail, as she exhibited a tendency to yaw that was pronounced enough to prompt the owners to switch off the autopilot and take manual control.

Overall, though, the owners seem happy. At the time of writing, the couple have made it to Mallorca, where they have called in to attend to some routine maintenance. Gibraltar is the next stop, to top up the tanks with duty-free diesel, and then onward into the wild blue yonder.

Bering yachts vs Nordhavn

bering yachts vs nordhavn

In terms of range, the Bering yachts have a slight edge with their larger fuel tanks; however, the Nordhavns often have more guest cabins, giving you more space for family and friends. Regarding quality construction, both brands are highly respected; but Bering comes in at a slightly lower price point. So, what is the best choice for you?

What to know about Bering yachts

What to know about nordhavn boats, key differences between these two types of boats.

Bering yachts are a type of luxury yacht. They are well-made and known for their quality construction.

Bering yachts often come with elegant designs and spacious interiors. They offer many benefits, such as high-end construction materials and ample space to move around.

The brand offers several distinct models that represent its reputation in manufacturing convenient and luxury boats:

They offer seven models of compact super yachts under 24 meters long for comfort and easy maneuvering. Meanwhile, there are four models of large-sized yachts longer than 24 meters.

However, there are also some downsides to consider before buying a Bering yacht.

  • For one thing, they can be quite expensive – so you’ll need to make sure you have the budget to cover them.
  • Additionally, Bering yachts are often quite heavy, meaning they can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces.

Overall, Bering yachts are an excellent choice for those who want a high-quality and fully-equipped boat.

Nordhavn yachts are a type of yacht that is specifically designed for long-distance cruising.

They are known for their sturdy construction, fuel efficiency, and comfortable living spaces.

The main benefits of a Nordhavn yacht are its fuel efficiency and comfortable living spaces. The spacious living areas are also perfect for extended cruises, providing plenty of room to relax and enjoy the trip.

A Nordhavn can go up to 3,000 nautical miles on a single tank of fuel, making it an excellent choice for long-distance cruising.

However, there are a few downsides to owning a Nordhavn yacht.

  • First, they are quite expensive, starting at around $1 million.
  • Second, they require more maintenance than other types of yachts, so be prepared to spend some time and money keeping your Nordhavn in good condition.

Price – Bering yachts are typically a little bit cheaper than Nordhavns. This may be due, in part, to the fact that Bering is a newer company and has not been around as long as Nordhavn.

Range – Bering yachts have a slight edge over Nordhavns regarding range. This is because they have larger fuel tanks, so you can travel further without refueling.

Guest Cabins – Nordhavns often have more guest cabins than Bering yachts, giving you more space for family and friends. This may be an important consideration if you regularly entertain guests on your boat.

Speed – Bering yachts are typically a little bit faster than Nordhavns. So, if you are looking for a boat that can move, then a Bering may be the right choice.

Bering yachts and Nordhavn boats are two of the most popular brands in the world when it comes to motor yachts. Both companies build high-quality boats that are designed for long-term cruising, but there are some key differences between them.

We’ve looked at both brands and broken down the pros and cons of each so that you can decide which one is right for you. Which brand do you think offers the best value for your money?

Turkey is the world's third-largest builder of superyachts.

Turkey, known for hot baths, baklava and fine leather goods, is also a serious contender in yacht building.  But since marketing is not one of its strong suits, the country could stay the best-kept secret in the superyacht world. A rich maritime heritage, pedigree craftsmanship and low wages have created a niche that positions the country at the heart of yacht production.

The collection of brands dotted along Turkey’s Mediterranean coastline include Turquoise, Akyacht, Alia, Vicem, Sirena, Dunya and Bilgin, along with lesser-known builders. After it’s delivered later this year, Dream Symphony —a magnificent 462.7-foot schooner built by Dream Ship Victory—will become the largest private sailing yacht in the world, knocking the Dutch-built Black Pearl off the podium.

There have been some impressive names to come out of Turkey, including the sailing yacht Maltese Falcon , the 348-ft. Dream, 253-foot Go , and the 236-foot Axioma , among dozens of others.

Turkey is the world's third-largest builder of superyachts.

At the Monaco Yacht Show two weeks ago, Bilgin displayed the first of its 263 series, Tatiana . Its interior includes walls and furniture of rich Macassar ebony, eucalyptus and different marbles, and the exterior has a sleek, sexy profile. Lead designer Emrecan Ozgun of Unique Yacht Design said his firm went all out to avoid “high-dosage design clichés” throughout the boat, making it one of the most contemporary, elegant launches this year.

Another major launch at Monaco was Victorious , a 279-footer from Akyachts, a new yard that the owner established to build the sleek superyacht. London-based H2 Yachts did the contemporary interior design, putting paid to the notion that Turkey’s designs lag behind the European builders.

“It’s now accepted that Turkey ranks third in the world for yacht construction in terms of total feet, after Italy and Holland,” Alexei Mikhailov, founder and president of Bering Yachts, told Robb Report . “In my opinion, it will soon be considered second.”

In April 2021, Bering’s 78.7-foot B77 explorer Veronika was delivered to her Australian owner. It’s the first of four deliveries planned by the shipyard this year, including a Bering 70, Bering 92 and Bering 76. Mikhailov believes the fiscal benefits of Turkey’s 18 Free Zones (VAT-free, tax-free and duty-free) make yacht building more accessible.

The Antalya Free Zone is the main yacht-building hub, accounting for around 80 percent, followed by Istanbul’s Tuzla district and Bodrum in the Muğla province. In 2019, 47 superyachts with a total combined length of 2,630 feet came out of the Antalya Free Zone, generating $95 million in revenue. The cross-section of owners came from the Netherlands, the U.S., Qatar, Croatia, the Ivory Coast, Portugal, Jamaica, Russia, Oman and Djibouti.

But Turkey’s appeal cuts deeper still. It has a solid artisanal workforce, a phenomenon that has arisen from the country’s longstanding manufacturing history and bespoke furniture making. And when the risk of a shipyard going bankrupt is taken off the table, the opportunity becomes even sweeter.

Turkey is the world's third-largest builder of superyachts.

“Purchasing a new build in Turkey is different from anywhere else in the world,” says Mikhailov. “The certificate of ownership is issued to the owner by the federal government from the very start of construction, which means Turkish shipyards effectively work for hire. So, it’s a really safe and transparent way of boat building that puts the owner in control from the beginning.”

In Bursa, at its 1.7-million-sq. foot yard, Sirena Yachts is making waves with its flagship 88, the shipyard’s largest model to date. Hulls three and four delivered in June 2021 to their Canadian and Spanish owners. The Canadian owner plans to live aboard for seven months a year, cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean. Eight hulls have sold in total to owners from Russia, North America and across Europe.

“The Sirena 88 is not a first-time user type of boat,” Ali Ongar, CCO at Sirena Yachts told Robb Report . “It’s designed for the owner who knows what they want. It’s a real hybrid, combining the American trawler-style of boat with superyacht speed and finesse and a bespoke interior, if required.”

Turkey is the world's third-largest builder of superyachts.

Building speculation boats, Sirena Yachts has created a rapid lead time of just two years. But if an owner steps in up to 10 months before delivery, they still have the option to customize their yacht interior. “We never stop building our hulls,” says Ongar. “We can build a 58-foot yacht from start to finish in four months, so that means we have the capacity to deliver one boat every 35 days throughout the year. That’s the beauty of building on speculation.”

Many Turkish yards are also collaborating with established European designers to further elevate the status of the yachts. Ken Freivokh and Dykstra Naval Architects are the names behind Dream Symphony and Cor D. Rover penned Sirena 88’s interior.

Turkey is the world's third-largest builder of superyachts.

Sirena 88 facing the world, bow-on.Meanwhile, Evadne Yachts in Istanbul has also collaborated with Vripack to produce an entire series of Rock models, ranging between 80 and 138 feet. “When you pair world-class design with Turkey’s competitive boatbuilding edge, you create the ultimate talent pool,” Ali Sayakci, owner of Evadne Yachts, told Robb Report .

If the growing demand for new yachts following this year’s Cannes and Monaco yacht shows is any indication, Turkey’s boatbuilding sector could be in for a strong run over the next three years. “We have the best address in the world for semi-custom yachts,” says Sayakci.
