Superyacht Crew Visa’s Explained

Superyacht Visa's Explained

What visa do I need to work on a yacht?

For this article, I am going to have to be very general about my advice.

When you are a professional yacht crew member, it is an understatement to say that you will be ‘travelling a lot’, whether it be by air, sea or land.

You will find that the one thing that comes up in conversation is what visa do I need for XXX country.

Therefore, to explain the superyacht crew visa topic, without waffling on too much, I will break down the requirements into locations.

Consequently, the three types of visa’s that we will discuss here are:

  • Schengen visa
  • USA B1/B2 visa
  • The Australian superyacht crew visa

For all visa processes and to make the application as easy and as stress-free as possible, make sure your passport is up to date with more than twelve months validity on it.

The Schengen Visa

The Schengen Area consists of 22 European Union (EU) state members and four non-EU members who are, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Ireland has also opted out of the Schengen policy, and they operate a separate visa policy.

At the time of writing this, the United Kingdom is battling their way through Brexit, but at this stage, UK citizens may move freely within the EU. Furthermore, the UK also run a separate visa programme.

Nationals of EU countries and Schengen nations are visa-exempt and are allowed to reside, move freely and work in each other’s countries.

For those nations outside of the EU and the Schengen visa agreement, then the following rules apply.

They are the Annexe 1 and Annexe 11.

The list of countries in Annexe I includes Asia, Africa and South America (Western part), Russia and China; this means that South Africans and Filipinos are eligible to apply.

The Annexe II countries include the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Annexe II citizens need a visa only if they intend to stay for more than 90 days within 180 days.

Therefore, no visa is required for citizens from Annexe II countries to enter the Schengen area.

Below is a generalised explanation of the Schengen visas for non-EU citizens there are:

  • Transit type B visa
  • Short-stay type C visa
  • Longstay type D visa

The first one is the transit visa, and it is commonly known as the Type B visa. As a yacht crew member, who travels a lot, you may know this visa as an entry or exit visa.

That is to say that this visa is only required if you are passing through a Schengen state for no more than five days.

For example, Transit type B visa is very applicable if your visa has expired and you still need to travel home.

The second type is the short-stay type C visa. This visa is valid for 1 to 5 years. When the visa expires, renewal can be testing.

This visa can not be changed, renewed or extended within the Schengen area. You must leave the  Schengen area and reapply.

The documents needed for this visa are:

  • The employment letter
  • Crew/work contract
  • Port letter and yachts itinerary
  • The yachts registration details
  • Personal travel insurance

In addition to the above requirements, there is a subsection to this visa referring to the “short” part of the visa name. The short-stay relates to the 90 days in and 90 days out within a 180 day period.

Essentially this means that if the yacht intends to spend the summer months cruising within the Schengen area then, the crew member will have to be stamped out by the shipping agent, rendering the crew member limited to the yachts flagged state.

At the end of the season, the crew member can be stamped back into the Schengen area, meaning that the time spent onboard under the flag state was time sent outside of the EU or Schengen area.

The third type of visa is the Longstay type D visa. The type D visa is the best visa to obtain a because it is renewable within the Schengen area.

The visa can be obtained by presenting the same paperwork are the type C visa.

The USA is a megabase for the superyacht industry.

By its very nature, it draws hundreds of young and aspiring superyacht crew, looking for work and adventure on the high seas.

If you are not a US citizen or hold a green card, then you will need to apply for a B1/B2 visa to work on board a superyacht in US waters.

According to the U.S. State Department website,

“The visitor visa is a type of non-immigrant visa for persons desiring to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1) or for pleasure, tourism or medical treatment (B-2)”.

This visa must not be confused with the C1/D visa which is a crew visa, broadly used for maritime personnel including a cruise ship and cargo vessels.

Unlike the Australian visa, the USA visa is not a straight forward visa to gain.

US Department of State is particularly interested in your ties with your own country.

You must be prepared to show that you pay taxes elsewhere, rent a home or can prove that you reside somewhere else in the world, which means that you are in no way interested in overstaying your visa or have illegal immigration intentions.

To obtain a B1/B2 visa, you really need to have all of your paperwork in order, including a letter of employment from your yacht.

The letter of employment is not stated on the website, so I guess it’s not technically required, but it sure will help during the interview process.

Next,  you will need to fill out a DS-160 form and make an appointment with your nearest US consulate general or embassy.

Be prepared for some tough and at times, rude questioning.

Other helpful papers, as mentioned above, include phone records, utility bills, bank statements and other documents that show that you reside happily elsewhere.

Please take the time to research this information accurately.

The Australian  Superyacht Crew Visa

The Australian superyacht crew visa was explicitly created to encourage the growth of the superyacht industry in Australia. Therefore,  it is very straight forward to gain this visa.

You must have a contract to work on a superyacht in Australian waters, and a supporting letter from the owner of the yacht confirming the person’s employment.

If you are not an Australian citizen, you will need to apply for this visa. The temporary activity visa (subclass 408)  Superyacht crew stream, allows you to work in Australia as a crewmember of a superyacht.

You can travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while your visa is valid.

The visa is valid for 12 months, with a maximum stay of up to 2 years. Furthermore, this visa is also renewable and you can do it online.

Elizabeth Lang

How does one get a B1Visa without a contract to work on a super yacht? My daughter is in a catch 22 as she’s done a super yacht course, madly looking for a job on all the yotspot websites but all the jobs are requesting a crew member to already have this visa in place before she’s being offered a job. It seems to be a catch 22 scenario. Does she need to go to the American Embassy in uK. It’s all very confusing! Please help

Kylie O'Brien

Hello Elizabeth, Sorry for the delayed reply, and I hope your daughter has found work already. The B1 visa is a challenge to get without a contract. Therefore I suggest she try to find employment in the Mediterranean sea or Pacific and then try for the yachts that will be travelling in US waters.

Julie

I am a US citizen and recently crossed from US to Spain. I was fired once we got to port. I decided to stay and get a seasonal job on another boat. I have had an offer from a Portaguese flagged M/Y. The question is do I need an additional VISA to go with my US passport. The job will go thru Sept/ traveling up around the Netherlands/Greece.

Hello Julie.

I’m sorry to hear about your trouble in Spain.

In my view as a US citizen, you have just 90 days on a Schengen visa. After which you will need to be signed on as crew. https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/us-citizens/#:~:text=Do%20US%20Citizens%20Need%20an%20EU%20visa%20to,visa%20for%20short-term%20tourism%20or%20a%20business%20trip .

Please note that I am not an immigration specialist, and I urge you to do your own research.

All you wanted to know about Yacht Crew Visa — Schengen and B1, B2

Yacht crew visas became one of the hottest topics of the summer. Many rumors were spreading around the crew hubs, and we wanted to clear out some of the unfounded rumors, and answer questions we frequently get from yacht captains and crew. For this purpose we assembled some of the leading agents in the yachting industry to help clear out this complicated subject. If you are a Greenie and just started searching for a yacht job or an experienced yachtie you will find useful information below. For information about the different locations go to our guide – How to start a yachting career . First, let’s get some of the terms out of the way.

What is Schengen?

Schengen refers to the EU passport-free zone that covers most of the European countries. It’s the largest free travel area in the world.

Schengen Visa –

According to Schengen Visa info A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa that allows a person to travel to any member of the Schengen Area , per stay up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes (Usually 90 days within 180 days, but can vary depending on nationalities). Schengen Visa can not be extended beyond the time allocated, unless unusual circumstances occur.

B1 B2 Visa –

According to Travel States.ORG Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who want to enter the United States temporarily for business ( visa category B1 ), for tourism ( visa category B2 ), or for a combination of both purposes (B1/B2).

Schengen and B1, B2

Stamping In and Out of a boat

A formal procedure that allows yacht crew members to “Stamp out” of the EU zone and into the vessel flag. That means the Schengen visa days do not count as long as the crew is on the boat crew list. Now, to the experts. We asked, Bruno Padula , Crew formalities expert from Luise Yachting agency, based in Naples

Mr. Bruno Padula, Crew formalities expert at Luise Yachting Agency, Italy, tips and guide about Schengen visa and B1 B2 visa for Yacht Crew

Mr. Bruno Padula, Crew formalities expert at Luise Yachting Agency, Italy

Schengen visa requirements for yacht crew

A Non European Crew has to open a Schengen visa ’s application at a Schengen Embassy in His/Her home Country. As a Shipping Agency, we take part in this process by issuing a guarantee letter, stamped and signed by the Harbor Master’s office of the Port where the crew will actually sign on/embark onto the vessel. This means a Shipping Agency in Italy can not issue a guarantee letter for a crew who’s going to embark in France. Neither a Shipping Agency in Naples can issue a guarantee letter for a crew who’s going to embark in Venice. Here is a useful video providing some useful tips for B1 B2 visas as well.

Is dockwalking legal in Italy and France?

Conflicting rumors about non European crew getting detained and deported for doing dockwalking – Can you confirm and clear out the dockwalking rules? “Utterly false”, says Mr Padula, “If such an episode ever actually occurred, it must have been for serious reasons. Of course a seafarer embarked on a vessel is not authorized to leave the Port where the vessel is moored. E.g.: the vessel is moored in Naples, the seafarer comes ashore and goes to Rome, that is an official disembarkation and it must be approved by a border police office. Embark and Disembark of crew in schengen areas are authorized by the Border Police’s office only. To stress on the subject, we went and asked Lorenzo Ciquera from BWA yachting France as there were rumors around Antibes and Monaco of yacht crew getting detained for dockwalking. “Not that I’ve heard”, said Lorenzo, who you might remember from our previous article about yacht agents . “Of course, non European crew need to hold a valid Schengen visa but crew are allowed to walk the docks if they are legal in the EU.

Mr. Lorenzo Cinquera, Yacht Agent at BWA France, tips and guide about Schengen visa and B1 B2 visa for Yacht Crew

Mr. Lorenzo Cinquera, Yacht Agent at BWA France

How to sign in to a yacht?

Mr Cinquera, from BWA yachting France explains the formalities regarding the onboarding procedure. “A local agent must go with the captain to customs, with the crew passports, seaman’s book, boat papers and crew lists and the crew will get to stamp out of Europe by sea. As long as the crew stays on the crew list, he is allowed to stay in Europe with no issues.” BWA Spain specialize in yacht crew formalities and also B1 B2 visas We asked Ilianna Lincoln from BWA Spain – What happens when the visa length runs out? “If the visa expired whilst the yacht crew member is onboard, there is no problem as long as the EU stamp out procedure was done correctly and the crew member remains enrolled to the vessel (remains on the crew list and does not leave the vessel to travel). After the expiry, and when the crew member is ready to depart the vessel, he/she must be flying to their home country and will be needing an Exit Visa that allows the travel time to get home and then will need to apply for a new visa, which we can also support with a guarantee letter.”

Do Customs have different rules in Europe?

Mr. Padula, from Louise yachting agency based in Naples: “Yes there are some differences in Countries nowadays: the European Sentence 05/02/2020 n. 314/18 has attested that whenever a Seafarer, No Eu nationality, is embarking on a vessel “longtime” (winter break for instance) moored into a Schengen Port, He/She’s not allowed to receive the stamp OUT of Schengen Area on his/her passport until the actual date of departure of the Vessel from said Port. This rule is applied in some Ports of North Italy but it is not applied in France and other Italian Ports.” In Spain some ports in Mallorca allow for stamping in and out with no restrictions, while in Valencia they insist on the boat departure in order to do it. So as you can see, there is never a clear answer regarding yacht crew visas , so we highly recommend consulting with a local agent prior to conducting crew formalities.

Greece, yacht charter & private yachts regulations

Can non-Europeans be eligible to work on boats with Greek flags? Takis Vryonis, from Nautilus Shipping agencies in Athens explains the procedure and paperwork needed: Yes they can work as seafarers, with the same documents as detailed below, invitation to the Greek Embassy valid visa is required and the sign in procedure. Here are the documents to consider when embarking a yacht in Greece:

  • Seaman’s Book
  • License or other certificate with flag endorsement (master’s or engineer license)
  • Applications to port authorities including immigration, filled and signed by the agent

The ultimate guide to becoming superyacht crew

Yachting Pages

There are a plethora of reasons why more and more people are packing their bags and opting for a career at sea aboard a luxury yacht. After all, few jobs exist where you can be offered expense-free living, (often) tax-free salaries and desirable voyages around the world to exotic locations.

Factor in the meeting of interesting people, the opportunity to enjoy unique experiences and the memories you'll create, the prospect of working as superyacht crew is incredibly appealing.

yacht crew on board

A career at sea is a fantastic way to sample a unique lifestyle for a few years whilst saving plenty of cash for later life. But, of course, there aren’t quite enough superyachts out there yet for everyone to land that coveted crew job. So, how do you give yourself the best possible chance of standing out and securing a role on board?

Here we cover the essential steps and need-to-know information to give you the best possible chance of becoming superyacht crew.

Make sure you can work on a superyacht

It might sound slightly condescending, but, as with many other unique industries, not everyone is quite cut out for this line of work. As luxurious as it can be made to sound, there's a lot of hard, stressful, physically and mentally demanding work to be done as a crew member.

You’re often dealing with very wealthy, powerful owners and UHNWIs (ultra-high-net-worth-individuals) and their families, as well as serving their likely rich-and-powerful guests. Needless to say, they can be very expectant.

The hours – particularly when guests are on board – are typically very long. When you do get the chance to rest, you’re sleeping in shared cabins, away from home for extended periods of time, and personal privacy becomes a rarity. You have to be able to handle this whilst maintaining the high spirits and optimum levels of service.

Then, there are the formalities: Have you got the correct visas? Correct training? Any tattoos? Are you a smoker? These are all important factors that could impact your chances of securing a position on board.

In  could you work on a superyacht?  we list eight questions to ask yourself before deciding whether a superyacht career is for you.

Understand the different roles aboard and how you would fit in to them

The term ‘yacht crew’ refers to at least a dozen-or-so different roles on a superyacht. Some are more hospitality-focused, such as a steward or stewardess, while others are more skill-based, such as an engineer.

Whilst you may be planning to enter the industry as a deckhand or junior stew and work your way up, it’s important to understand the roles, duties, and responsibilities of all crew on board. Check out our guide on yacht crew positions and contracts for a complete rundown of what each role entails, as well as the average salary and main responsibilities.

Get trained up!

The marine industry is awash with crew training providers and a range of courses and certifications – some of which are mandatory, such as the ENG1 and STCW , while others will simply help you obtain a more desirable skillset. Find out which training you will need to undertake in our article, The right crew training for the right crew member .

Remember, having additional skills, languages and a busy personal life listed on your CV is a huge help in making you stand out from the sea of other applicants. So, consider which, if any, additional courses may help you in obtaining and succeeding in your chosen role before you actively start looking for work.

Get yourself out there!

Getting the mandatory crew training is a great start in your yacht job search, but is your crew CV as good as it could be? Are you looking for work at the right time and in the right place? Are you sufficiently prepared for your interviews? How does a superyacht crew job interview even play out? It’s important to consider all these things before hitting the dock.

Dubai Harbour Marina

It's logical to start with your crew CV. As with many things in the superyacht industry, there are some key differences between a CV in the corporate world and the marine/superyacht world, so we’ve written our own guide tailored towards writing a CV for work in the superyacht industry .

To find a position on board, it's recommended to move to the yachting hubs and hiring ports of the world, and networking in the local yachtie hangouts to get yourself noticed. The South of France and the Balearics are popular options.

Different yachting hotspots have their peak periods, as we discuss in depth in our How to choose the right hiring port  article. Only experienced senior crew are likely to ever be flown out for interviews; so unless that's your forte, you’ll need to make sure you're on the ground in your chosen port, and as accessible as possible to potential interviewers.

Your yachting career will likely begin with daywork: Single, one-off jobs for a bit of cash and a nugget of valuable experience. If you do a good job, you might even get called back for further work. That's how it can all begin!

It’s time to nail the interview!

Job interviews aren’t the most enjoyable of experiences, regardless of the industry you’re entering. It's daunting and obviously rejection is never pleasant.

But, when you’ve gone to the effort of relocating yourself to search for crew work, and you’ve paid good money for multiple training courses and medical certifications, falling at the last hurdle hits even harder.

As a first-time yachtie, expecting a job offer for every interview you attend is unrealistic, but with some simple guidelines and advice, you can ensure you’re as well prepared as you possibly can be.

Much like crew CVs, job interviews can be a little different in the superyacht industry too. We go more in-depth on this topic in our How to succeed in a yacht job interview article, where you’ll learn what’s typically expected of yacht crew candidates at interview, amongst essential tips for the big day.

There are easier jobs to find in the world than a superyacht crew role – we all know that – but the amazing stories and experiences we hear from past and present crew are a testament to how those who put the hard work in really do reap the rewards. It can take time, but crew recruitment is worth it.

You can take a look at the  crew agents listings here on Yachtingpages.com for agencies that can greatly assist in your search for a career in yachting. Alternatively, you can browse crew training companies for courses you'll need to get into the industry.

We wish all prospective crew the very best of luck in their job search!

Depending on where you plan to look for your first job in yachting and your nationality, you may need to look into what visa is required for you to legally enter countries and work onboard.

Here are 3 visa’s to consider for the yachting seasons:

B1/b2 visa (caribbean and us season).

This is a multi-entry visa for yacht crew to work onboard superyachts cruising the US ((including US Waters). For the Caribbean yachting season, most yachts cruise in US waters so if you’re not a US Citizen you’ll most likely need a B1/B2 visa. This visa is notoriously hard for green crew to obtain without boat papers, for more information on how to obtain this visa check out my blog article The B1/B2 Visa To Work on Boats In The US & Caribbean . Or for more information peruse the US Embassy website .

Schengen Visa (Mediterranean Season)

Schengen refers to the EU passport-free zone that covers most of European countries. According to Schengen Visa Info, the Schengen visa is a short-stay visa that allows a person to freely travel to any members of the  Schengen Area , per stays up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes. There are three classifications for crew using the Schengen visa; Transit, Short stay and long stay.

As green crew you will usually enter on this visa for travel purposes allowing you 90 days within the EU. Some advice here: do not mention anything about work to the embassy, I would also recommend having proof of funds to support your stay and a flight or train out of the EU region or at least a ‘plan’ to leave the EU after 90 days, this is in case of the embassy questions you upon entry. For specific information on your nationality, I recommend having a look at the Schegnen Info Website. Here are some links for US Citizens , South Africans , British and the new rules for Australians and New Zealand citizens starting January 1, 2023,  where they can apply for a visa waiver prior to their travel to Europe.

According to The European Commission website, from November 2023 , visitors that do  not need a visa to enter Europe  will be able to register with European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). ETIAS will become a mandatory entry requirement.

Once the EU ETIAS travel authorization becomes operational, all citizens from the current visa-free countries will be required to submit an application before their trip. However, for the time being, they can continue to travel to Europe using the Schengen system without applying online for travel authorization. As always please do some research into this on a official government website as information can change according to different nationalities.

Australian Superyacht Crew Vis a

According to the Australian Government to be eligible for a Superyacht Crew visa you must have a contract to work as a superyacht crew member, a letter from the owner of the superyacht confirming the person’s employment as a member of the crew of the vessel or have a supporter or a sponsor, depending on your circumstances. It’s a 3, 6 or 12-month visa for crew and you must meet certain requirements, for more details on this check out this Superyacht Australia article and current pricing for the visa on the Australian Government website .

In addition to having the right visa to enter a country to work in the yachting industry, you should try to have 12 months of validity on your passport . It is much easier in your home country to renew your passport or apply for a passport, when you’re at sea it can cause a lot of hassles.

Having your certificates and qualifications scanned onto your computer or a USB is also very useful as you will find you will need to submit these frequently when applying for jobs so having them online makes the process easier. It is very important to also carry hard copies (such as your SCTW and ENG1 medical) at all times.

The Seamans Discharge Book

Once you are employed on a yacht you may apply for a Seamans Discharge Book from the flag state of the vessel on which you are employed. This may be useful for tax purposes and in certain circumstances, it may even act as a passport if you do not have the necessary visa for a certain area. Usually, the boat will be able to help you with your application and will need to sign off on the documentation.

Places that do not require a Visa to work on yachts

The UAE, Maldives, Seychelles  and most of the South Pacific  are destinations that DO NOT require crew to have a specific type of visa to join. So there is the potential to land a job at the end of the Med season in Antibes, on a yacht that is destined for these places in the winter period I recommend if you’re planning to jump on the tail end of the Med season and hoping to snap up one of these job opportunities… Get there in September.  By the end of October, Antibes can be a ghost town with few yachts in sight. Not good for job-hunting prospects.

Now is also a good time to upskill and perfect that yachting CV because… let’s be real it’s fierce out there! 🔥🔥🔥

Getting the Right Visa for the Job

For green crew and sometimes established yachties looking to relocate, paperwork and travel documentation can be the cause of huge distress. Every country has its own system and list of requirements which lead to confusion and headaches for crew members trying to make sense of it all. We’ve compiled as much information about Visa and Passport applications to help with what you should do and how you should do it.

As the weather begins to warm up the Northern Hemisphere popular holiday destinations such as the Mediterranean, the French Riviera and the Caribbean are going to attract yacht owners and, as a result, crew members. This means that in order for any non-EU crew to work on yachts a Schengen Visa must be obtained. Although the visa is fairly easy to get (if you have no criminal record and provide all the needed documents in a timeous manner) the industry at large remains surprisingly misinformed on the solutions available to yacht crew.

There is a misconception that hiring non-EU crew presents hassles when it comes to paperwork and accreditation.

This has had a negative effect on the crew hiring process, with some jobs advertising only for certain passport-holders or even expressly stating: “No South Africans/Filipinos because of passport issues”.

Truth be told, crew members should not be denied job opportunities solely based on the country they come from. All nationalities can and should be given a fair chance regardless of their passport. With the right advice and some careful planning, Schengen visas can be relatively simple to understand and manage.

The Schengen Agreement, signed in 1985, includes the 22 European Union member as well as Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. The visa policy of the Schengen Area places the rest of the countries of the world into two annexes respectively. Nationals on the Annex I list (most countries in Africa, Asia and western parts of South America) need a visa if they wish to enter the Schengen Area. Nationals on the Annex II list do not require visas to enter the Schengen Area but often require permission for a stay longer than 90-days or for employment activity on land. Some Annex II countries include Canada, America, Australia and New Zealand.

When it comes to knowing what visas to apply for and how, as well as where to renew visas it is important to know that every situation should be handled on a case-by-case basis. An explanation of the Schengen visa requirements for non-EU yacht crew is given below. As it stands, three types of Schengen visas apply to non-EU seafarers: 1)  Transit (Type B) Schengen visa 2)  Short-stay (Type C) Schengen visa 3)  Long-stay (Type D) Schengen visa

1 - TRANSIT (TYPE B) VISAS Commonly referred to as an ‘entry visa’ or ‘exit visa’, this visa is needed for crew who join or leave a boat in the Schengen Area. The transit (Type B) visa is valid for a transit of no more than five days through the Schengen Area. This visa is used mostly by crew members who need to join a boat and help take it somewhere else (i.e. an Atlantic Crossing due to depart from France) or for crew members who have an expired Schengen visa and need to fly home from a Schengen airport.

2 - SHORT-STAY (TYPE C) VISAS Short-stay (Type C) visas are issued on a single-entry, double-entry or multiple-entry. These visas are issued to a variety of non-resident visitors to the Schengen Area including tourists, seafarers and business people. The documents needed to apply for short-visas depend on the nature of the visit. For yacht crew, the most relevant visa is the Seaman Short-Stay (Type C) visa. A list of documents is required. This generally includes proof of employment letter, travel insurance, work contract, vessel registration papers, port letter, boat itinerary etc. that prove that the crew member will work on board a vessel. The Seaman Short-Stay (Type C) visa is valid for 1 to 5 years depending on the crew contract and other factors like the number of previous Schengen visas in the applicant’s passport. As a general rule of thumb, a Type C visa cannot be changed, renewed or extended from within the Schengen Area. This needs to be done at a consulate outside of the Schengen Area. The visa should be applied for in person by the crew member concerned.

3 - LONG STAY (TYPE D) VISAS Long-stay (Type D) visas do not apply the rule of 90-days in and 90-days out. Instead, they are granted for a set period of time and can be renewed from within the Schengen Area. . These visas are dependent on the duration and reason for the applicant’s stay in the Schengen Area including study, seasonal work (seafarers) and permanent residence. The list of documents required to apply for this visa is similar to the short-stay (Type C) seaman visa and differs slightly from consulate-to-consulate but usually includes: the seafarer’s work contract, vessel registration papers, proof of funds etc. It is imperative that the visa renewal process should begin two-three months before the visa is due to expire. The good news about this visa is that it places the crew member within the Schengen ‘national’ system and allows them certain rights and responsibilities that are not available to short-stay (Type C) visa holders. It is the better visa to get if non-EU crew plan on having a life in Europe.

It is a pity that misinformation in the industry has flagged non-EU passport holders as a nuisance when really, it can all be simple and easy to understand. The best thing a non-EU citizen can do is make sure all your documents are in order so that when an opportunity does present itself you don't lose out because of tedious paperwork.

  • The superyacht industry is highly competitive and in order to qualify for employment a financial investment is required (training & travel)
  • For applicants without relevant experience, being physically present at or near Superyachting hubs when searching for employment is important
  • Obtaining the correct qualifications does not guarantee employment and training is not refunded
  • Your passport and ability to obtain Visas have an impact on your employability
  • Having contacts, experience, and the correct attitude is an advantage
  • Working in the industry comes with some amazing benefits but like any career path, there are also disadvantages
  • Being an extremely "hard worker" is not an advantage, it is expected
  • The quality of work and attention to detail needs to be of a very high standard
  • You need to be well-mannered, professional, and well-suited to living in close proximity to other crew
  • Presentation matters
  • Getting advice from multiple sources including crew who work in the industry is advised
  • Different yachts, owners, crew, and itineraries = different experiences

2. Choose the Yacht Crew Department you Wish to Work in

Before joining the yachting industry, it is essential to decide on your career path. The work environment and duties associated with each superyacht department vary greatly. It is therefore advised that you understand the training, duties and requirements associated with each role. The most common roles for crew entering the industry are:

Super yacht stewardess serving guests at training school

Steward / Stewardess

A superyacht stewardess is responsible for the guest service, housekeeping and laundry. In some cases, the position is combined with an additional role for those who come from a beauty or healthcare background.

Super Yacht Deckhand

Superyacht Deckhand

A deckhand is responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the yacht's exterior. Wash downs, line handling, tender driving, watersports and bridge lookout duties are common tasks for deck crew.

Chef food

Superyacht Chef

Working as a superyacht chef comes with some unique challenges. Although the skills are certainly transferable, there is specific training and certification required. It can be a tough but extremely rewarding job.

Superyacht Engineer

Working on a yacht or superyacht as an engineer can be a rewarding career path. Although a background in engineering or mechanics is an advantage, it is not a prerequisite. The duties associated with the role are diverse, exciting and require a great deal of hard work.

3. Complete All Mandatory Superyacht Training Courses

Having the correct training and certifications is essential to your employability in the superyacht industry. In order to become a crew member, you will need to have completed the following training:

  • STCW 2010 Basic training
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Awareness or Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
  • Department-specific training for your desired role. (I.e. stewardess, deckhand, engineer, chef, and officer courses)

4. Obtain an ENG1 or ENG1 Equivalent Seafarer Medical Certificate

ENG1 Medical Certificate (or ENG1 Equivalent)

Superyacht work can be physically demanding. Ensuring that crew are physically well and able to work at sea is a crucial aspect of the crew and guest safety.

In order to work on a superyacht, you will have to hold an ENG1 Medical Certificate. Because the certification is set by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the examination must be performed by an MCA-approved doctor. The examination is done in order to identify any medical conditions that may prevent you from safely performing your work duties at sea.

5. Choose a Location to Join a  Superyacht

When looking for your first job it is essential to be in the right place at the right time. There are a lot of factors to take into consideration when selecting your location, however the two most popular areas for working on a superyacht are:

6. Obtain the Correct Visas & Documentation for the Relevant Superyacht Hub

It is essential to obtain the correct visa for the country you plan to work in. It is important to understand the types of visas that exist as well as the local laws with regard to job seeking.

7. Create a Superyacht Crew CV

Yacht Crew CV Example

A professional and well-structured superyacht CV will help differentiate you from other job seekers looking to enter the industry.

Superyacht crew resumes have a different structure to normal CVs. If your CV is not laid out appropriately, your chances of being considered for a position are slim.

Examples and more information on how to create a great CV can be found on the links below.

Crew Agencies

Crew Agencies play an intermediary role between yachts and crew. There are numerous agencies scattered around the main yachting hubs. Registering is a simple process and can be done online, many agencies will then request a short interview in person.

Social Media Pages:

Online job boards and social media pages are extremely useful ways to apply for jobs as well as to find day work. It is important to only apply to jobs if you meet the criteria (have the correct experience and qualifications).

Be wary of which jobs you apply to. We recommend you only apply for jobs from closed social media groups with active moderators. Fake job posts do occur at times. Make sure you do not meet with or send personal information to suspicious accounts.

Find Appropriate Social Media Pages

Dockwalking:

Dockwalking is the process whereby you walk the docks with the aim of getting day work or even landing a permanent job. It is a gruelling task as there are often long distances between docks and it requires hours on foot. It also involves a lot of rejection as many boats are fully crewed and not looking for employees.

Find out more about dock walking.

Networking:

Your introduction to the world of yachting. The industry is growing exponentially; every year more boats are built, and more crew join the industry. It remains however, a close-knit community that feels a lot smaller than it is. ‘Everybody knows everybody’ and finding a job through a friend or a friend of a friend is often the best way to go. Crew like to work with people they get along with. They are therefore much more likely to hire someone from their extended network of friends than to look elsewhere (provided experience and qualification requirements are met).

A Few Suggestions:

  • Network at every opportunity you get.
  • Socialise with people you meet at training courses.
  • Attend dock parties and BBQs.
  • Socialise with the people in your crew house and visit other crew houses.
  • Join yacht groups on social media.
  • Hang out in the ‘yachty’ bars and restaurants.
  • The more people you know in the industry the better off you will be.

Taking a Gap Year

Taking a Gap Year and Working on A Luxury Yacht

So you’re thinking about taking a gap year from studies and going to work on a luxury yacht? We can tell you from experience that you’re in for one hellova ride! But also, possibly one of the most rewarding jobs you’ll ever have.

Most people’s first question to us is usually along the lines of “was all that stress and time away from friends worth it?” – Yes my friend, yes it was! It was incredibly challenging at times with a  steep learning curve, but   so rewarding . The experience alone taught us so many things that will help you when you decide to go back to your studies, or pursue a career post studies.

Taking A Gap Year

Taking a gap year between high school and college has been growing in popularity and can be a great alternative and opportunity for those who need a change of scenery with an abundance of growth and learning.

If you are considering continuing your studies on your return, it is advisable to possibly still apply to college or university in your senior year – thus taking advantage of high school connections, counsellors and teachers for support, and referrals. It’s also a great idea to ask prospective institutions about their gap year policy – which will also quickly help you determine whether it is for you or not. Some may require that you interview prior, and put down a deposit for your deferred studies.

Convincing Your Parents

The easiest way is to guarantee that you will continue to study further, by applying to your institution of choice prior to announcing your gap year, and of course telling your parents that some of the funds you’ll make on your gap year will go towards your further education!

The other is to convince them that it’s not a holiday – especially in the case of working on a luxury yacht. It may look glamorous and all, but it’s going to be a lot of discipline and hard work. You’ll learn some great people skills, tenacity and patience – all great skills to have for your further education or career later on.

What You Need To Know: Jobs Available

The most common types of jobs on superyachts, especially with no prior experience are for  deckhands and stewardesses .

These roles do not require previous yachting experience, making these the easiest positions to jump into for inexperienced crew.  Responsibilities for deckhands  include deck maintenance, chamois/polishing the boat exterior, launching and driving tenders and assisting guests with the safe use of the boat’s ‘toys’ – banana boats, jet skis, laser sail boats etc. The  stewardess’ responsibilities  include detailing the boat’s interior, guest and crew laundry, housekeeping, meals and drinks service.

There is a lot of competition for the rookie jobs on yachts. The better prepared you can be, the more chance you might have of landing that job on luxury yacht or superyacht.

What You Need To Know: Eligibility

Typically aged 18 years or older are considered.

No criminal record.

Be able to swim.

Medically fit to pass a ENG1 Medical Examination .

Sufficient funds to pay for program fees, flights and all additional costs.

Be independent, self-motivated and customer service oriented.

Looking to work for a full year or longer.

What You Need To Know: Prep, Training & Visas

Certain credentials are now mandatory for new crew looking for superyacht jobs. Any person working on boats must hold an up-to-date  seafarer medical certificate . In addition, all crew members must have completed the nine-day basic safety training course – STCW 2010 .

Anyone looking to get into working on superyachts should be aware of the  potential costs  involved. The STCW course alone costs approximately R6,500, plus there may well be travel and accommodation expenditure involved, with no guarantee of a job at the end of it all. Having  sufficient funds  to go and live in some of the popular yacht departure locations, such as the south of France, Mediterranean, Caribbean etc will also help your chances of getting a job – as you can meet the Captain face to face.

You will also need to be  prepared to work hard . The industry is well-known for its long hours and round the clock duties. In addition, crew quarters are invariably small and cramped, and undoubtedly you will be sharing with another person. The ability to get on well with other crew members in such conditions is a life skill worth learning.

Depending on where you’ll be located, you may also require specific  Visas   for travel  and/ or work permits. Some Visa approvals can take quite long, depending on your local government, and country of travel. Be sure to try and plan in advance. You don’t want to get the opportunity of a lifetime only to be stuck on-shore as you don’t have the correct Visas!!  Speak to us on tips to plan for this.

What You Could Earn

With no prior experience you would typically start as Junior Stewardesses (girls) or Deck Hands (boys). These positions will see you working very hard, often long and unsocial hours, but wages are substantial (and tax free) and the travel opportunities and other perks of the job are fantastic.  Progression up through the ranks (and earning potential) will depend on your work ethic and level of motivation.

The earning potential onboard is also significant. Starting salaries for new crew are in the region of $2,200 per month. That’s also tax free and with no expenses as your living costs are paid for onboard. Some crews also will earn tips in addition – but this largely depends on the type of yacht you’re on, who’s on board and the purpose of the sail.

All in all, if you’re considering a gap year, the time it takes for training, courses, visas and just general waiting time to get picked to crew, can take a couple of months. If you are serious about doing this, try as best as possible to  plan in advance . Go mix with local yachties and find out when the next opportunity could be. Sign up for placement academies and get your yachting CV ready.

With the right credentials and a bit of luck, you might just land your dream role working on a luxury yacht, making money, rubbing shoulders with the world’s rich and famous and getting to see some beautiful places whilst at it.

For most of us, traveling around the world on a luxury yacht is a dream. This life is usually reserved for the rich and famous. But it doesn’t have to be. Did you know you could find yourself island hopping in the Caribbean, Mediterranean or Pacific by getting yourself a yacht job? Yes, you could be the one waking up to beautiful sunrises in far flung places on a daily basis while yacht crewing. And you don’t have to be knowledgeable about sailing or well-connected in the yachting community either to find a job. In this post I’ll break down the different types of yacht jobs, the pros and cons of them, how much they pay and how to find a position crewing aboard a yacht. Are you ready to get paid to sail the world?

Table of Contents

What is a Yacht?

First of all, what is a yacht? Good question, and when I tried to find a definition the words that continued to arise were ‘a yacht is a craft used for pleasure and sport’. The name comes from the Dutch word jaght which is a fast, light sailing vessel. It seems when the English King Charles II was carried by ‘jacht’ from The Netherlands back to England, the word came to mean a vessel in which important people were carried. And that impression of a yacht exists still today, that yachts are a luxury vessel designed for recreation, relaxation and comfort only for the rich and famous. But can I just point out, that I know many people who have worked hard, saved, and bought themselves a yacht to travel the world.

Types of Yachts

There are different types of yachts. You will here the names cruisers, superyachts and mega yachts throughout this post. These days you can classify a yacht as either a sailing yacht (wind powered) or a motor-powered yacht. To define the names even more:

  • A yacht less than 12 metres long is usually referred to as a cabin cruiser.
  • Superyachts are usually more than 24 metres (131 feet) long.
  • A mega yacht tends to be anything longer than 50 metres (164 feet).

No matter the type of yacht, they don’t sail themselves.

Types of Yacht Jobs

It takes a wide variety of people to keep a yacht running smoothly. Firstly, the vessel needs looking after. It will need cleaning, maintaining and crew and deck hands for sailing. Then the people onboard need looking after. This is where cooks, cleaners, massage therapists and nannies come into play. Superyachts are like mini hotels and there is room for many workers to look after their guests, including, but not limited to hair stylist, yoga guru and beauty therapist to name a few.

Types of jobs on yachts can range and are determined by the size of the vessel. Smaller cruisers maybe owned by one person, couple or family and they might want an all round crew member to help them sail. Then you have the superyachts and mega yachts which have room for many people and they require all sorts of staff. I have classified the jobs into three areas as follows:

Catching a Lift – Travel and Work Your Passage

Get a Yacht Job and Sail the World as Crew.

Travel and Work Your Passage

Where ever there is open water you will find some kind of sea vessel. The best way to find a lift is to frequent yacht clubs where yachts are moored and speak to the captains and/or leave your details on the noticeboard. If successful in obtaining a lift you will probably have to share costs towards your passage unless you are part of the paid crew. Popular places to catch a lift from/to include:

  • Sydney for the Whitsundays in Queensland, Australia or to New Zealand;
  • Darwin, Australia for Asia;
  • Auckland Harbour for the Pacific and the USA;
  • Balboa (Pacific Ocean end) or Port of Cristobal (Atlantic Ocean end) of the Panama Canal;
  • any of the Caribbean Islands, particularly Antigua (English Harbour), Jamaica (Montego Bay) and the Isle of Martinique;
  • Gibraltar: at the mouth of the Mediterranean, this is often a stop-off point for yachts to pick up supplies after crossing the Atlantic;
  • Nice and Monte Carlo in the South of France for the Mediterranean;
  • Any of the Greek Islands

Many yachts spend the Northern Hemisphere Summer (June-August) sailing around the Mediterranean, then cross the Atlantic Ocean (which can take around six weeks) for the Caribbean where they island hop between September and April. Many also head to the Southern Hemisphere Summer (December-February) and enjoy summer and many yacht races there.

Deliver a Yacht

There can be long distances involved with sailing and some owners prefer not to do the hard yards of sailing between countries. They prefer to spend their time anchored up in the company of family and friends or day-hopping along different coastlines. For those gruelling trips between continents that make up a large part of the circumnavigation more help is required – and this is where you come in. You can sail the yacht to its destination.

On-board Positions on Superyachts and Mega Yachts

As I’ve said, yachts range in size and some of the larger yachts can take many people. These larger yachts require crew to help the yacht function and the number of crew required will depend on the size of the yacht. Positions can range from the Captain, deckhand, mates and engineers to crew looking after the guests, ie. chef, steward, bartender, etc. to crew providing activities such as a dive instructor, fitness instructor or masseuse. These yachts are often moored in spectacular harbours at glitzy marinas of St. Tropez, Monte Carlo, Miami or Nassau to name a few.

How Much Do Yacht Jobs Pay?

Having a job on a super yacht or mega yacht can be lucrative. As well as being paid to work, you employer is providing meals and accommodation. And as you are at sea, you will be able to save a lot of your wage. There are many variants to work out your wage including your qualification and experience, where the yacht is based and whether it is private or charter. However, here is a rough guide of what you can expect to earn weekly in US dollars:

Deckhand Jobs: $2700 Steward: $3000 Chef: $4000 Engineer: $5000 1st Officer: $6000 Captain: $7000

On top of these salaries, you can add tips, of which can vary.

Having a job on a small yacht with one other person or a family your wage might be a lot less as the yacht is smaller and your duties will vary. You may be pitching in as an ‘all rounder’, meaning you will be doing some sailing and maybe some cooking. Some really small yacht owners may even ask for you to contribute for costs of the sail. For instance, the owner may want to move the yacht from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean. They might want you to help out with the food cost. But hey, this can be worth it particularly as you don’t have to ‘buy the boat’. Other times, you will be working for your passage.

Pros and Cons of Travelling and Working Abroad on a Yacht

Pros of yacht jobs.

  • You get to travel around the world to exotic locations. Or be moored in a spectacular harbour.
  • Get paid to live aboard the yacht. Though on the smaller yachts, you may be asked to contribute to costs.
  • Accommodation and Food is included so you will save money not having to pay for these.
  • Meet new people.
  • Learn new skills which you can use elsewhere.
  • Have wonderful experiences.
  • It is a great travel and work abroad job.

Cons of Yacht Jobs

  • You may encounter rough seas, get sea sick or need to dodge pirates.
  • Need to be tolerant and patient with some incredibly rich and rude people.
  • The working hours can be very long and sometimes erratic depending on the guests wishes.
  • Work can be very hard and you may need to be ‘on hand’ at all times.
  • Living quarters can vary and you may have to share.
  • Once on the boat, you are on, you cannot get to dry land when you want. Ensure you are comfortable with being in close quarters with the same people, for days, even weeks on end. If you don’t get on with work mates, it will be a very long experience.
  • Work can be seasonal.
  • You will be away from family and friends.

What Qualifications and Skills are Required to Work on a Yacht?

The qualifications and skills required to work on a yacht will depend on the position you are applying for. A chef will need different qualifications and skills to a deck hand. As would the Captain to the housekeeping person. There are two basic certifications that everyone should have in order to work at sea.

STCW 2010 (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers)

If you are wanting to find yacht jobs on commercial or charters, then you will need a STCW certificate. This is the qualification required around the world if you want to work on a yacht than is longer than 79 feet (25 metres). This would be a super yacht or mega yacht size. Not all smaller private yacht owners require this qualification but it is preferred. During the STCW course, you will learn about personal safety and accident prevention as well as fire fighting, personal survival (using life jacket and inflatable rafts and some basic first aid. It is very important you know how to be safe aboard a yacht as your life and other people’s lives, may depend on it in an emergency. The course takes about a week and can cost around $1000. This may seem a lot, but with the certification, yacht jobs open up to you.

To do a course check out the following:

Flying Fish who are located in Cowes, UK and Sydney, Australia:  www.flyingfishonline.com American Yacht Institute www.americanyachtinstitute.com

ENG 1 Seafarer Medical Certificate

The next thing you will need after obtaining the STCW 2010 is an ENG 1 Seafarer Medical Certificate. This is a mandatory certificate stating that you are fit and healthy to work aboard a ship. You will need to find an MCA-approved doctor to carry out the examination to issue the certificate which should cost around $120.

Qualifications and Skills Required to get a Yacht Job

Looking After Your Sailing Guests on Super Yachts and Mega Yachts is Your Number 1 Priority with a Yacht Job.

Guests on your number one priority when working on a yacht

All the following skills are very useful to aid you securing a yacht job. They aren’t mandatory but the more skills you have, the better the jobs available to you. Ensure to list them on your CV.

Some jobs on yachts require a qualification, they include:

  • Diving Instructor
  • Massage therapist
  • Hairdresser / Beautician
  • Sailing licences

Skills and Experience that are very helpful to get a job on a yacht include:

  • Being able to speak other languages
  • Have high-end establishment hospitality experience
  • Good people skills and a high level of tolerance and patience
  • Be hard working with great organisational skills
  • Water sport experience

Never Sailed Before?

Don’t worry too much if you have never sailed before. Depending on the size of the yacht you may not need to have worked on a yacht previously. Plus it depends on the job you will be doing. On the bigger super and mega yachts if you are joining as a chef, you won’t need to worry about learning what a deck hand does, unless you are required to be a deck hand also!

For smaller yachts where you might be sailing with one person or a family who requires someone to help them sail their yacht you may need to have sailing experience. You can gain sailing experience through yacht clubs around the world as most of them offer introductory sailing classes. And these clubs are often thrilled to have new members join their weekend courses and races. Doing this will definitely give you some skills and the confidence to start your yacht crewing career. There is no quicker way to learn to sail than having a captain screaming at you while you slip about the bow! But after a couple of months you should be jibing the spinnaker pole like an old sat!

If you are unable to do a course at the very least learn the basics of boating. This should include how to tie real knots as your life will occasionally depend on the quality of your knots.

How to Find a Position on a Yacht

There are two main ways to secure a position on a yacht: Through an online yacht jobs staff agency and by connecting with the yachting community.

Online Yacht Jobs Staff Agencies

You will find many yacht job agencies based all around the world. Most agencies allow you to register your details into an online portal. This will entail uploading your CV into their system. Most will then contact you, or you them to be matched with the ‘Yacht’ looking for staff. Don’t just rely on using online agencies, many of them have a physical office and if you are in their part of the world, it is wise to contact them directly by phone to organise an in-person appointment for you to visit the office. The more agencies you register with, the better your chances of securing a position.

Agencies to contact include:

Crewfinders International Inc (based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA) Crewseekers International (based in Eastleigh, UK) Crew Pacific (based in Cairns, Queensland, Australia) Elite Crew International (based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA) YPI Crew , based in France

Most agencies will require you to add details into an online portal and upload your resume (CV). The quality of agencies varies, and it’s essential to do your due diligence before accepting a position.

Connect with the Yachting Community

If you have a marina nearby I highly suggest you connect with the yachting community there. You never know who you might meet at a yacht club that needs crew for their yacht. If you can’t wait around at the bar waiting to meet people, ask if you can leave an ad on the noticeboard. And tell the bar person you are looking for work because they are often a font of information and know who is doing what.

Yacht hot spots where you can start your search for a yacht position include:

  • Sydney, Australia – yep, great for those wanting to sail around the Pacific Islands (Fiji, Tahiti, etc)
  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • Palma de Mallorca, Spain
  • Southampton, England
  • Cowes on the Isle of Wight, England
  • Antibes, France
  • Cabo San Lucas , Mexico
  • Puerto Vallarta , Mexico
  • Phuket , Thailand
  • Galle Harbor, Sri Lanka
  • English Harbor, Antigua

TIP : When looking for a yacht job dress the part. Dress to impress. Ensure you are showered, your hair is neat and tidy and your clothes are ironed. Be neat and tidy and maybe cover tattoos and take out any piercings. You will need to comply with dress standards of the vessel so until you know what that is, dress to impress.

Is Working On a Yacht Right for You?

Yacht jobs are not as glamorous as they are made out to be, in fact, they are often hard work. However, they can also be an amazing experience. I think waking up in a sunny tropical exotic location is much better than waking up to a cold and wet day at home! So is working on a yacht right for you? Yacht jobs aren’t for everyone but the only true way you will find out if this travel and work abroad lifestyle is for you, is to try it. Bon Voyage. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences on crewing aboard a yacht in the comments following.

This sounds like an awesome job! I haven’t been on one yet, I’m not sure if I can handle it due to the motion sickness but I hear that they’re so big, you don’t notice!

Some are bigger than others. There are preparations out there to help with sea sickness.

Such an interesting job and perfect for a single 20 something year old! I could never do it because I would get seasick. But it sounds fun!

There are loads of sea sick preventatives nowadays. This is not just for single 20 something year olds. People of all ages are sailing.

I have friends who love to sail and have traveled the world on a sailboat. It’s not for me though; I prefer to travel across the ocean on a cruise ship.

Yeah, it’s not for everyone. But for those who it is for, they love it!
