NAUTILUS Yacht – Breathtaking $90 Million Superyacht

The multi-award-winning NAUTILUS yacht was designed with a variety of luxurious amenities that are arranged around a layout that prioritizes both space and comfort.

The goal of the design was to create a superyacht that would exude Zen and have a smaller carbon footprint. 

The high-volume superyacht is exceptionally quiet both when it is moving and when it is anchored because it is powered by hybrid diesel-electric plants.

Additionally, the vessel is equipped with a dynamic positioning system.

Unsurprisingly, NAUTILUS received a number of awards at the Monaco Yacht Show Awards the year she was delivered, and she continues to impress every type of charter guest she welcomes on board.

NAUTILUS interior design is penned by Remi Tessier , a renowned French yacht interior designer.  

Lighting is very important in the interior of the superyacht NAUTILUS. The recessed lighting and even illuminated furniture work together to create a quietly sophisticated yet entirely inviting atmosphere. 

There are over two meters of headroom in the main salon, for example, and the layout is largely open-plan to make moving through the yacht a memorable experience in and of itself.

Tessier chose a variety of textures for the window frames, including light sycamore, bleached wenge, and even some high gloss ebony. 

Additionally, the social and private spaces are as comfortable as they are aesthetically impressive, thanks to careful contouring and palladium accents.

The main salon has a light grey color scheme and multiple seating options surrounding a collection of coffee tables. 

Instead of a plethora of decorative fixtures, Tessier has simply added a one-of-a-kind artwork by American artist Edward Ruscha, a finishing touch that completes the area in a suitably outstanding manner.

The elegant hull of the superyacht NAUTILUS was designed by French naval architect Philippe Briand with both hydrodynamics and space in mind.

Her plumb bow ensures efficient performance while also maximizing waterline length and providing plenty of volumes.

Tessier has extended his usual preference for uninterrupted spaces on the sundeck to create an environment that captures the Zen that the owner specifically requested.

A number of custom sun pads that can rotate 360° have been paired with similarly bespoke sun loungers with built-in biminis for instant shade.

Additionally, there’s a large Jacuzzi on the main deck aft for taking in the tropical climate in style, as well as a coffee bar on the aft deck that can easily be converted to a cocktail bar when the evening calls for more drinks. 

Perhaps the most eye-catching feature of the exterior is the LEDs installed above the social areas, which, when lit, discreetly communicate to the crew that guests are politely requesting some privacy.

She can comfortably accommodate 12 guests and 22 crew members for a relaxed yachting experience.

The seven cabins available to guests are spread across two decks and each has large windows to allow for plenty of natural light to complement the electric lighting.

All of the cabins, like the social spaces, are furnished with bright and comfortable furnishings, allowing guests to enjoy time alone without sacrificing the beauty of their surroundings. 

The main deck master suite features his and her bathrooms separated by a limestone bath, as well as additional seating on either side of the bed.

NAUTILUS  is powered by a Caterpillar diesel-electric propulsion system. She has a beam of 13.2 meters (43’4 inches), a draft of 4 meters, and a total gross tonnage of 1,876 gross tons.

The superyacht is the ideal combination of performance and luxury, with a cruising speed of 14 knots, a maximum speed of 16.5 knots, and a range of 7,000nm from her 185,000-liter fuel tanks.

Superyacht NAUTILUS is a charter yacht that combines the finest Italian craftsmanship and pedigree with innovative Perini Navi design and engineering.

The 239.50ft/73m Custom expedition yacht NAUTILUS was delivered from the Picchiotti shipyard in 2014 and bears an exterior styled by Philippe Briand whilst her refreshing interior has been designed by Remi Tessier.

Setting out to create a superyacht which would exude Zen and possess a greener carbon footprint, the multi award-winning NAUTILUS features a range of luxury amenities arranged around a design which privileges both space and comfort. Powered by hybrid diesel-electric plants, and including a dynamic positioning system, the high volume superyacht is also exceptionally quiet both when underway and at-anchor.  

Exterior Design

Designed by the French naval architect Philippe Briand, the elegant hull of superyacht NAUTILUS was shaped with both hydrodynamics and space in mind. Indeed, whilst her plumb bow ensures efficient performance, it also maximises the waterline length and provides plenty of volume for the French designer Remi Tessier to carry out his iconic minimalist styling to full effect. On the sundeck, Tessier has extended his usual preference for uninterrupted spaces to produce an environment which nicely captures the Zen the owner’s specifically requested. Anticipating both sunbathers and leisurely guests, a number of custom sunpads which are able to rotate 360° have been partnered with similarly bespoke sun loungers with built-in biminis for instant shade. Keen to provide every reason to enjoy meals alfresco, a table has been slightly lowered to provide a private and intimate dining experience with unobstructed views extending well over the ocean. Naturally, there’s a sizable Jacuzzi on the main deck aft in order to take in the tropical climate in style, and a coffee bar at the aft deck which can be easily converted to a cocktail bar when the evening calls for more drinks. Perhaps the crowning feature of the exterior is the LEDs which have been installed above the social areas, which, when lit, discreetly communicate to the crew that guests are politely asking for a degree of privacy. Getting between these various areas could not be easier, as Superyacht NAUTILUS features a walk around layout which nicely lends itself for brisk evening strolls at sunset. With her tender garage opening up on the port side, guests are able to enjoy the sizable swim platform off the stern of NAUTILUS without having to compete for room with inflatable toys and snorkelling equipment. Of course, the more adventurous party members will be only too satisfied with the range of toys on offer, and there’s assuredly endless hours of fun on the water to be had.

Interior Design

In the interior of superyacht NAUTILUS lighting plays a huge role. Indeed, overhead lighting, recessed lighting, and even illuminated furniture combine to create a quietly sophisticated ambience which is at the same time wholly inviting. Space also plays a big role in the interior- there’s over two metres of headroom in the main salon, for instance, and the layout is largely open-plan to make moving through the yacht a memorable experience in itself. In terms of texture, Tessier has selected an assortment of light sycamore, bleached wenge, and even some high gloss ebony for certain window frames. With careful attention to contouring and accents of palladium, both the social and private spaces found indoors are as comfortable as they are aesthetically impressive. The main salon, for example, bears a light grey colour scheme and multiple seating options surrounding a collection of coffee tables. Instead of an abundance of decorative fixtures, Tessier has simply added a unique artwork by the American artist Edward Ruscha, a finishing touch which completes the area in a suitably outstanding fashion. Other areas inside are entirely consistent with such a principle- the additional salon and dining area both provide lounging options in a strikingly contemporary setting. Unsurprisingly, such an impressive interior ultimately led NAUTILUS to receive a number of awards at the Monaco Yacht Show Awards the year she was delivered, and continues to impress every kind of charter guest she welcomes on-board.

Guest Accommodation

Spread across two decks, the seven cabins available to guests each possess large windows to allow for an abundance of natural light to complement the electric lighting on offer. Similar to the social spaces, all of the cabins are outfitted with bright and comfortable furnishings, meaning that guests can enjoy time alone whilst not having to sacrifice an inch on the beauty of their surroundings. The master suite on the main deck includes his and hers bathrooms nicely separated by a limestone bath, as well as additional seating on either side of the bed.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Possessing plenty of garage space, NAUTILUS comes with a veritable arsenal of towable water toys and snorkelling equipment to keep everyone occupied whilst it’s warm outside. For those more inclined towards chilling out with a couple of drinks, an observation room on the upper deck allows guests to greet the coasts on the horizon and take some stunning photographs from an unrivalled vantage point. Another feature of NAUTILUS sure to arrest the attention of charter guests is the Oculus entertainment system. Connected to the various television screens on board, guests are able to use the system to track their position in real time as well as switching over to watch footage of the yacht as it carries them along.

Special Features

When designing NAUTILUS, her owners paid particular attention to methods which would adequately reduce the noise on board. Via multiple strategies including sound dampening and other innovative approaches, decibel readings in the master suite when cruising at 14 knots showed there was only 42.6dB- which could be heard- a level just above a whisper. What’s more, eco-friendly systems have been installed to ensure less damage to the waters the superyacht moves through. Such engineering features include an exhaust route which mitigates fumes as well as a waste management process which operates at optimum efficiency. As an expedition yacht, NAUTILUS also comes with dynamic positioning, a system which allows her to remain stationary without the use of an anchor as well as having greater manoeuvrability around ports.

The upper deck is completely dedicated to wellness, with a spa, massage suite, hydrotherapy bath, and even a hair salon on offer for guests in need of some refreshment. As well as being annexed by small and casual dining tables, the space is flanked by large windows to create a suitably harmonious tone. Enclosed by expansive sliding windows, the gymnasium on offer brings together all of the equipment and facilities necessary for a truly satisfying workout whilst looking out across the ocean.

As a custom displacement yacht, NAUTILUS also features ‘at anchor stabilisers’ which work at zero speed, increasing onboard comfort whilst at anchor or on rough waters. NAUTILUS is built to comply to MCA and Lloyds Register standards. With a cruising speed of 14 knots, a maximum speed of 16.5 knots and a range of 7,000nm from her 185,000litre fuel tanks, she is the perfect combination of performance and luxury.

A regular Jane celebrating a personal renaissance after a long-term relationship might commemorate the new era with an ankle tattoo of a spiritual saying. When you're a billionaire, you could do it instead with a $500 million megayacht . 

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos made waves in May riding around the roughly 127-meter "Koru," a Māori term that may signify a fresh start, with his reported fiancée Lauren Sanchez. (In 2019, Bezos finalized his divorce from MacKenzie Scott, whom he was married to for 25 years).

Beyond the private planes occupying the hangars of billionaires, yachts have come to symbolize the highly private sites of leisure and networking reserved for the ultra-wealthy .   

Tech billionaires like Bezos, Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have all purchased their own mini vacation hubs at sea, decking their boats with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

For those wishing to experience life aboard these multi-million-dollar yachts, some are available to rent out for a few nights or weeks at a time. Late Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's yacht can be booked for $2.2 million per week or more, according Bloomberg .

Chartering yachts owned by billionaires like Alphabet cofounder Sergey Brin has previously cost customers anywhere from $773,000 a week to $1.2 million .

It remains to be seen how these vessels will fare against the apparent Orca uprising.  

Take a look at some of the yachts that have been owned by tech billionaires.

A mystery buyer bought a 414-foot superyacht that was once owned by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen for $278 million. Allen had the boat, which was named "Octopus," built in 2003 for $200 million. Since the tech billionaire's death in 2018, the boat had been listed for as much as $325 million.

The wealthy can book the yacht for a weekly rate of $2.2 million or more, through the luxury company Camper & Nicholsons, Bloomberg reported last year.

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the roughly 127-meter "Koru," sparked attention in May for its artistic decor. A sculpture of a woman on the boat appeared to observers to be the likeness of Bezos' reported fiancée Sanchez, who was also seen that month on the yacht sporting a large ring.

Even before its completion, "Koru" drew the ire of Dutch people vowing to hurl eggs at the boat if it would require a historic bridge in Rotterdam to be taken apart to let it through. An egg crisis was averted however, as the company making the ship found a less-irksome alternative.

Bezos has long been interested in yachts. In 2019, he was spotted aboard entertainment mogul David Geffen's superyacht.

Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison owns a 288-foot yacht named Musashi that he acquired in 2013. The yacht has several amenities, including an elevator, swimming pool, movie theater, and both an indoor and outdoor gym.

The Oracle cofounder also has a knack for competitive yacht racing, and helped to found and back a racing team, called Oracle Team USA, in 2000. The team has found success and won several prestigious titles over the years.

Ellison previously owned a bigger, 454-foot yacht called Rising Sun, which was designed specifically for the CEO in 2005. That yacht reportedly has 82 rooms, a movie theater, a wine cellar, and a basketball court. However, Ellison sold off the Rising Sun to Geffen for a reported $300 million.

Ellison's boat, Musashi, is a sister ship to the yacht of another billionaire, former Sears CEO Eddie Lampert. However, the yacht, named Fountainhead, is often mistaken for belonging to billionaire investor Mark Cuban. "The guy who owns the boat tells everyone that it's mine," Cuban told Page Six in 2016. "It's so crazy ... I don't even own a boat."

Ellison's yacht reportedly influenced the decision of late Apple CEO Steve Jobs to get a boat himself. However, Jobs never set foot on the boat — the yacht was commissioned in 2008, but wasn't completed until 2012, a year after his death.

When Jobs died in 2011, his yacht — along with his $14.1 billion fortune — was inherited by his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, founder and president of a social-impact nonprofit called the Emerson Collective. The 256-foot yacht is named Venus, and is worth $130 million.

Google's billionaire cofounders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are known to splurge. An Insider feature in December documented some of the trappings of their luxury, including planes and yachts.

Page owned a yacht named Senses, a $45 million, 194-foot boat that he bought in 2011 from a New Zealand businessman. He's since sold the yacht, Insider reported in 2021, a vessel that had a private beach club with a Jacuzzi and sun beds, both indoor and outdoor dining areas, and a helicopter pad. It's unclear what other sea vessels he owns, though Insider has previously reported he might have another yacht.

Brin meanwhile owns a number of yachts and vessels including the 73-meter Dragonfly, and the 40-meter Butterfly, Insider reported in January.

Dragonfly, the $80 million boat that has a movie-theater, shares a name with Google's once-secret project to launch a censored search engine in China. Google said in 2019 it had officially terminated the project.

The former Google CEO picked up the Alfa Nero yacht for nearly $68 million in an auction in June, according to a Bloomberg report. The yacht had apparently been left amid Russia's war in Ukraine, according to the report.

For Skype cofounder Niklas Zennstrom, his interest in yachts skews toward racing and competitive sailing. Zennstrom has gone through a succession of boats all named Ran.

The Ran VII yacht is among the most advanced of Zennstrom's boats. The racing yacht uses electrical power, which Zennstrom has said makes it "lighter, less drag, quieter, and most importantly it is environmentally friendly."

The 40-foot yacht has been meant to compete in regattas through the racing team owned by Zennstrom and his wife, Catherine. The Ran racing team launched in 2008, and has won some prestigious regattas.

Barry Diller, chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns a $70 million yacht with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

The sailing yacht, named Eos, is 350 feet long with six bedrooms. The power couple has hosted many celebrities over the years — a few that have been spotted aboard Eos include model Karlie Kloss, actor Bradley Cooper, journalist Anderson Cooper, and singer Harry Styles.

For Jim Clark, the cofounder of Netscape, one yacht hasn't been enough. Clark has owned boats for more than 30 years, and in 2012, he put up two of his sailing yachts for sale.

Clark listed the boats for a combined $113 million: the 136-foot Hanuman for $18 million, and the 295-foot Athena for $95 million. However, Clark has yet to offload Athena. Clark also previously owned a 155-foot yacht named Hyperion, and currently also owns a sloop called Hanuman.

Charles Simonyi worked at Microsoft until 2002, and oversaw the creation of Microsoft Office software. A few years before he left, Simonyi decided to purchase a yacht. He told the designer that wanted his yacht to be "home away from [his] home in Seattle."

The product of that conversation in 1999 is Simonyi's yacht named Skat, meaning "treasure" in Danish. The yacht measures 233 feet long, and is unique with its nontraditional design and gray color. Skat features a matching gray helicopter, a gym, and motorcycles.

Opulent British billionaire Richard Branson owned a yacht until he sold it in September 2018. The 105-foot catamaran sold for $3 million, significantly lower than the $9.6 million price Branson listed the boat for in 2014.

Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, bought the boat in 2009. He named it Necker Belle, a nod to his private Caribbean island, Necker Island.

Vancouver-based Nautilus selling off its namesake brand

Company to focus on its bowflex, schwinn and jrny brands.

Vancouver’s longtime fitness giant Nautilus Inc. announced Tuesday it has sold its Nautilus brand, though will keep the company name for now.

The business, which also owns Bowflex, Schwinn and JRNY, is putting all of its efforts into these three core brands.

“When we launched our transformative North Star strategy two years ago, we emphasized the importance of focusing on our Bowflex, Schwinn, and JRNY brands and signaled that we would be de-emphasizing the Nautilus brand,” Nautilus CEO Jim Barr said Wednesday. “Since then, we have stopped manufacturing equipment under the Nautilus brand and have been selling remaining Nautilus products.”

The $13 million sale included the Nautilus brand trademark assets and related licenses. The company said it used the proceeds from the sale to pay down part of a term loan.

The sale will “position us well to continue to capitalize on long-term growth in consumer demand for at-home fitness,” said Barr in a statement.

The company declined to say who exactly acquired the brand.

As a part of the deal, however, the fitness business has a license back, meaning it is able to use the Nautilus brand and sell its remaining Nautilus inventory.

As for the future of the company’s name, no announcements have been made regarding definitive plans.

“That said, over time, we plan to evaluate options on company branding,” read a statement from the company Wednesday.

Nautilus employs 417 people, including 260 in the Vancouver area. The sale doesn’t impact staffing, the company said. And its headquarters will remain in Vancouver.

The Tuesday statement added the action would streamline the business and provide more financial flexibility.

“With the improved financial flexibility from the sale and enhancements to our balance sheet, we’re confident in our ability to manage through the current environment and continue our path to becoming a leader in connected fitness,” said Barr in the statement. “At the same time, our strategic review is ongoing as we continue to assess any opportunities that may accelerate our transformation and enhance value for our shareholders, while also benefitting our customers, employees, retail partners, and vendors.”

Nautilus launched its North Star strategy in 2021, which involved embracing a consumer-first mindset, scaling its digital offering, focusing its investments on core businesses, evolving the company’s supply chain to be a strategic advantage and building organizational capabilities.

Connected fitness

During Barr’s tenure, the company has turned away from just being an equipment company and instead embraced connected fitness.

Connected fitness really came into its own during the pandemic when fitness companies, including Nautilus, saw skyrocketing sales. Those sales, however, have since returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Tuesday’s statement said the company’s fourth-quarter sales are expected to be $62 million, a decline from the previous quarter, which were $98.1 million.

After experiencing declining sales, the company said in February that it planned to lay off 15 percent of its staff and put in place other cost-saving measures. Leadership expected to save $30 million annually by doing so.

Nautilus’ directors said in September 2022 they were considering selling the entire business.

Barr said the company remains committed to Vancouver and Southwest Washington.

Nautilus, he added, has been among the top workplaces in the area for a decade.

After the announcement on Tuesday, Nautilus Inc.’s stock price closed at $1.32 per share — the same as the previous day. The company’s stock had reached $29.53 a share in February 2021. It trades on the New York Stock Exchange as NLS.

Nautilus said it used the $13 million it received from selling the Nautilus name and other “non-core assets” to advance an ongoing effort to shore up its balance sheet and pay down its debts. Nautilus laid off 15% of its staff in February , approximately 80 jobs.

The company said it now has $19 million in cash and $18 million in loans. At the end of last year, Nautilus had just $16 million in cash and $61 million in debt.

Nautilus’ sales soared during the pandemic as gyms closed and people rushed to buy home exercise equipment, purchases often funded by federal stimulus dollars. As gyms reopened, though, and the federal spigot shut off, Nautilus and other companies that thrived during the stay-at-home era have struggled.

Nautilus said Tuesday its sales fell by more than half last year, from $589.5 million to $286.8 million. The company said it lost $107.5 million last year, compared to a loss of $22.2 million the prior year. Nautilus last reported an annual profit in 2020, when it recorded net income of $59.8 million.

With its market position and finances eroding, Nautilus announced last September that it was reviewing “strategic alternatives” for the business, including a possible sale . Nautilus said Tuesday that its strategic review is continuing.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Nautilus plans to change its corporate name, now that it no longer owns the rights to its own name. The companydidn’t immediately respond to an inquiry Tuesday.

Originally founded in 1986 as Bowflex, the fitness product company over the years acquired Nautilus, Schwinn and StairMaster before changing its name to the current Nautilus. It also owns JRNY.
