I have a friend looking for me to advise on the purchase of a Downeast motoryacht. He's looking for a used 28-32 footer and has thrown some names at me for my recommendations. My general thoughts are Back Cove and Legacy might be best, but my experience in this size range is limited so I would appreciate any opinions on the following builders that might help me point my friend in the right direction: Albin, Back Cove, Duffy, Fortier, Legacy, and Mainship Thanks! Judy

I'm not familiar with Fortier, and not sure I'd consider Mainship as a Downeaster, but all good names.

Good list so far, the MJM seems to get good reviews
Thanks for the responses and additional recommendations. Any opinions or experience on any of the manufacturers including the expanded list? Comparisons, pros, cons, good or bad experiences? Thanks! Judy

revluc said: ↑ The only thing I would say is a downside to mjm is the narrow(er) beam they design in their hulls to achieve a better ride, and fuel consumption, compared to some of the other brands mentioned. Sabre/Back Cove are sister companies and Sabre doesn't go down as far as 32', where the Back Cove Brand starts to pick up. Sabre did build a 34' for a short period, but I don't think they sold many of them, hence moving it to a Back Cove product line. The differences there are twin (Sabre) vs. single (Back Cove) engines and Back Coves less wood/flash. Of the brands mentioned those are the 3 we have shopped in the Downeaster market when looking at a possible replacement boat in SWFL. All are great in build and fit/finish, just a little different in the user they are marketed toward. Click to expand...

Thanks to all for the responses. Good information - please keep em coming. The pickins are slim for the size and budget... Judy

Take a look at Cape Dory -- they made a nice 28 footer. A small but good brand was Blue Star -- they made a very appealing 29 that is affordably priced on the used market. Another boat to consider is the Albin 31 -- a good looking boat with an interesting -- even clever -- interior design. Eastern Boats are very plainly finished but they are acceptable quality.

I second the Blue Star but there aren't many of them around. Another limited production boat worth looking at is the 32' Atlas Acadia. I sold one in CA (twice) and was very impressed with it. There are a couple of mid 2000 models on the market in FL.

MJM is extreme quality, strong resale and capable offshore. We owned one and loved it. Legacy is good quality very popular and above average in a chop (the 32 is crazy popular) Sabre is a distant 3rd but does not build in the under 34 range Mainship is a price boat so you get all the cheap boat issues Fortier is well built and handsome. Tough resale unless you take it home NE. No two are the same. Back Cove is for your average boater looking for simple and late model. Not a good sea boat for her size and her modified V makes her a "slider" around the dock. Single screw with a tiny rudder. The mostly came with flag blue gel coat that lasted 2 years Eastbay 38's are 18 years old now but several rock stars on the market in the low 200's

In my mind, most of the boats being mentioned are production boats that use the "downeast" moniker, except for Duffy and Fortier. If you are looking for a true downeast design, look to the maine builders, Wesmac, Duffy, Northern Bay, etc. A good source for you would be the downeast boat forum, lots of knowledgeable guys on there and they find some nice boats that are listed for sale throughout the internet There was a nice 26' Fortier for sale in Ft. Lauderdale for a while now.
Jarvis Newman... Yes agreed but most downeast shoppers are really looking for the more modern interpretation. Similar to trawler buyers who want to cruise at 18 knots

We Test the New MJM 53z: Fast, Fun and Elegant

' src=

It’s one thing to read about a new boat. It’s quite another to actually drive it. I certainly had expected to enjoy the new long, low, elegant MJM 53z, with its four 400-hp Mercury Verado outboards. After all, I’d already driven its predecessor, the MJM 50z, with three 435-hp Volvo IPS600 pod drives, as well as every other MJM model. But once I got behind the wheel of the 53z I realized it was even better – and a lot more fun – than I had anticipated.

One of the main reasons outboards have become so popular lately, even on larger cruising boats, is their performance. They simply provide more head-turning acceleration than is possible on most inboards; they carve turns faster, and, as many people have noted, driving an outboard is similar to driving a sports car.

All that is true on the MJM 53z. But what’s different is that the MJM 53z is a luxurious yacht, with two full cabins (with easy chairs), two large heads, a galley that would do justice to many a New York studio apartment, plus an enclosed helm deck that’s essentially an extra salon up top, and a large aft deck/cockpit. (The second full cabin is new on this boat, and it’s a major addition.)

On an early summer morning, before I climbed on the boat, I looked at it across the dock at the Newport Shipyard in Rhode Island and realized that this Doug Zurn-designed beauty with its glistening black hull and gold stripe was a big yacht. The four white outboards (painted in Mercury’s “warm fusion white”) made it look even larger, while promising a fun, powerful ride.

And they delivered. After we cast off, Bob Johnstone, who founded MJM in 2002, walked the boat away from the dock with Mercury’s joystick and then drove out into Narragansett Bay. After we cleared the harbor, he nailed the throttles and the outboards spooled up an instantaneous surge of acceleration. The bow barely rose and the big cruiser sped ahead until Johnstone backed off the throttles at about 47 mph, as all five of us on board broke out in big smiles.

The point was that this was not a 30-foot sportboat. It was a full-fledged 53-foot ocean-going yacht equipped with everything you’d need for a week or longer cruise to Maine or the Bahamas (including the standard Seakeeper gyro stabilizer). And you’d be safe along the way. The MJM 53z has an ISO Category A Ocean Certification, attesting to its seaworthiness in some gnarly conditions. The company says the boat is the largest outboard-powered express cruising boat in the world.

We cruised up the bay at 46 mph, when I measured 79 dB(A) at the helm. I drove for a while, and then George Day, my Cruising Odyssey colleague, took over (“I’ve never driven a 50-mph boat before,” he said later.) Mercury tested the boat earlier, hitting a top speed of 51.1 mph at 6,464 rpm with 800 gallons of fuel on board. (See Mercury’s full performance chart with speed, fuel burn and range, below.)

The highlights: at 8.7 mph, the boat burns 10.7 gph, and has a range of 740 miles. At 20.1 mph, it burns 55.2 gph, and has a range of 331 miles. At 42.4 mph, it burns 129.8 gph, and has a range of 297 miles. At 48.6 mph (6,000 rpm), it burns 142.3 gph and has a range of 272 miles.

The numbers only tell part of the story. Throughout the speed range, the MJM 53z provides a quiet, solid and smooth ride. There is no smoke or vibration. The hull performs the way Zurn’s other boats perform, which is to say, very well. Zurn has designed all the MJMs, as well as boats for Lyman-Morse, Derecktor, Vanquish, Shelter Island, C. W. Hood, Bruckmann, Duffy, Williams, Lynx, Hylas, and Billy Joel’s Vendetta  commuter boat, among others.

Zurn’s MJM hull is slender and fuel-efficient, with 18.6 degrees of deadrise at the transom. It slices through the waves while the chine flats direct water outboard, and there’s a touch of Carolina flair forward to keep the boat dry. It’s also light weight, displacing only 33,669 pounds, due to the expertise of Boston BoatWorks, which uses a proprietary epoxy composite pre-preg, oven-cured, vacuum-molding system to create the light, strong and stiff hull.

The boat’s low profile, and long sheerline, add to its beauty, but also to its practicality. With only an air height of 10’7” it can slide under most of the bridges in Florida and along the Great Loop.

“There are two great things about this boat,” Johnstone said, as we headed into Brenton Cove, for a picnic. “Performance and comfort.” We had experienced, the performance; now we enjoyed the comfort.

He used the Skyhook feature to keep the boat in place for a few minutes in the middle of the mooring field there, before we picked up a mooring and shut down the outboards. We relaxed on the aft deck, seated around a glistening teak table, looking out at one of the most beautiful spots in the Northeast. And we enjoyed sandwiches and soft drinks, protected from the overhead sun by an awning stretching out across the aft deck. It doesn’t get much better than this.

The 53z is definitely a cruiser-friendly boat. You walk on through side doors cut into the hull, both port and starboard, leading into the aft deck.  You also can enter via the teak swim platform and transom doors on each side. A luxurious three-person settee is across the transom, facing the teak table, and two occasional chairs are on either side. A wet bar with an ice-maker is forward on the port side, an aft-facing seat on the starboard side.

You can raise the aft half of the deck here by pushing a button under the seat. It raises high to reveal a massive storage space. Another advantage of outpower power, of course, is that it opens up a lot of space inside the boat where the engines, transmission and drive shafts used to be (or the pods, in the case of IPS). The Seakeeper is here, as is the Glendinning Cablemaster that spools up the shore cord at the touch of a button, and an offshore liferaft. And there was still lots of space for a couple of paddleboards, water toys, supplies for a long voyage, whatever.

You walk into the helm deck through a sliding glass door; it’s flush with the aft deck. There are aft windows on both sides; the starboard one slides down at the push of button. As on the 50z, a U-shaped settee on the starboard side (with a high-low table) and a straight one on the port side can convert into berths at night, and the entire area is enclosed and climate-controlled, with windows all around.

Forward, to starboard, the captain has a doublewide Stidd helm seat, facing two Raymarine screens. The large, teak, Edson destroyer-type wheel makes driving easy, while the joystick, mounted on the port side of the helm, makes for fingertip-controlled docking and low-speed maneuvering. The joystick for the bow thruster is on the starboard side.

To port, the navigator has a single Stidd seat, and another Raymarine display. The boat has stainless steel grab rails all around; two are on either side of the teak door leading to the cabin below. The top of the door folds out so it serves as a chart table, easily readable by the captain and navigator, a very nice touch for serious cruisers.

Visibility is excellent all around, as is ventilation. The two front windshields can be power-opened; there are overhead hatches, and the front windows on both sides slide back. You also can open or close the aft glass door or the aft starboard window.

Below, the master stateroom is forward, with classic Herreshoff panels. The island berth is large (a full 7 feet long) and has four storage cabinets underneath. What’s most inviting is a combination desk and dressing table on the port side, with a big, plush reading chair. You can use this as an office or simply a great private space to pull out a good book and relax.

The master head is to port; it’s large and bright with a shower (complete with a seat) behind a glass door. A matching head is to starboard and serves as the day head or the head for the second stateroom, a new – and appealing – addition to the 53z. It’s a full stateroom in its own right, with standing headroom, not an area tucked under the helm or the galley. In this boat it had a queen bed, although you can get it with twins.

As in the master, it too had a big easy chair, next to a table with a lamp (and USB outlet), and it faces a desk. Johnstone was using this stateroom as a fully functioning office; his printer was in a drawer in the table. “There’s not another boat under 60 feet with a second stateroom this size,” he said.

The galley, on the port side, is large enough to support a long cruise or an extended time on board. It’s the same as the galley on the 50z, and it has everything you need, down to the espresso maker in a teak cabinet.

After our picnic, Johnstone again used the joystick to walk the 53-footer back into a crowded dock, making it look easy. The concept of an upscale 53-foot cruising yacht with outboard power had taken hold. “MJM offers yachts that are at the pinnacle of the outboard world,” Johnstone said.

He is an active racer, recently racing in the J/70 fleet at Quantum Key West Race Week and aboard the J/130 Dragonly in the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race.

Prior to joining McMichael in 2007, he captained the 80′ schooner Adirondack II in Newport, RI and was an instructor at Offshore Sailing. In his free time, he enjoys cruising his Sabre.

Todd Williams Todd started sailing on his family’s cruising boat before his memory serves. His love of racing was cultivated through sailing Blue Jays and Lasers in Pequot Yacht Club’s junior program.  Since then he has actively raced in the J105 fleet, J109 fleet, and helped form the J122 class. He also developed and helped launch the LIS IRC 35 class.  Todd is an experienced distance sailor and was involved with winning the Vineyard race class and IRC overall aboard the J122 Partnership.

Todd enjoys using his extensive knowledge of boating to find his clients the boat that best suits their needs.  He is dedicated to providing the best possible service to all his customers.  Todd can often be found racing with clients and helping them build their racing programs. Through the years, he has custom built many J/Boats, Alerions, and MJM power boats for clients, many of whom he now considers personal friends.

During the winter season you may spot the Williams family on the slopes at Okemo where they have a ski house.

Andy Kaplan Starting October 4, Andrew (Andy) Kaplan has joined the brokerage team at McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers. The addition increases the McMichael roster to seven full-time yacht brokers serving customers up and down the east coast with a concentration on the Long Island Sound and Narragansett Bay. He will work primarily out of the McMichael Mamaroneck, NY, office as well as Martha’s Vineyard.

“Andy is bringing to McMichael a lifetime of experience in sail and power boating with a keen focus in the sailboat racing world,” said McMichael President Steve Leicht. “His broad familiarity with offshore and one-design sailboats combined with his powerboating experience makes him an ideal addition to our brokerage team.”

Kaplan spent the majority of his career in finance including helping create the Quattro Global Capital, LLC where he was a principal and head of operation and marketing. “I believe that my financial sales and management experience is a great asset as I transition to yacht brokerage,” noted Kaplan. “While they are different industries, to succeed in either you need similar disciplines when matching buyers with the right product. That’s what creates and maintains long term customer relationships.”

Kaplan grew-up in Mamaroneck and has been a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club for over 30 years where he has been active in the Club’s leadership. He lives in New Rochelle, NY, and on Martha’s Vineyard, MA.

MJM is a designer and builder of high-performance Carolina Downeast-style luxury yachts. Carolina Downeast-style boats are a classic type of recreational boat originating from the New England and Atlantic Canadian regions. These boats – used for sportfishing, cruising, and entertaining – typically feature a single inboard diesel engine, spacious cockpits, and often have an enclosed cabin or pilothouse for comfort in various weather conditions.

MJM was founded in 2002 by Robert Johnstone and is based in Washington, North Carolina. Peter Johnstone , who has led MJM since 2019, will serve as the president and chief executive officer of Seolta.

“In 2021, we started our own manufacturing and developed leading high-tech production processes,” said Mr. Johnstone. “Sales doubled, and demand continues to grow. Our mission is to deliver MJM customers their fondest shared adventures, regardless of conditions.”

Saothair was co-founded in November 2019 by former KPS Capital Partners’ professional Kevin Madden and Richard Lozyniak , a former CEO of three KPS portfolio companies. The firm is headquartered near Philadelphia in Radnor, Pennsylvania.

“Our investment behind Peter and the entire team will provide the company with the capital necessary to grow the business and build the MJM brand aggressively,” said Mr. Lozyniak.

“Market-leading yachts result from terrific people. We thank our dealer network, loyal owners, industry vendors and dedicated workforce. Rich and Kevin will further strengthen the team that is committed to our success. Seolta’s support will fuel MJM’s ascent further. I am thrilled to be able to bring MJM to the next level,” added Mr. Johnstone.

Los Angeles-based SierraConstellation Partners was the financial advisor to MJM Yachts.

The MJM 50z

Timeless design.

The MJM 50z is an eco-smart game changer featuring advanced composite construction, an innovative layout and the latest stabilizing technology. Her stronger, lightweight epoxy construction results in a very low vertical center of gravity. That translates into greater stability, ISO-certified Category A seaworthiness, and an impressively comfortable ride. MJM 50z was the first motoryacht worldwide to offer the “no roll” Seakeeper Gyrostabilizer as standard equipment. Adding further to comfort and livability: Her flush-deck layout from cockpit to helm combined with side boarding doors at floating dock height eliminates the many up-downs and boarding access challenges of other yachts.

You want to look at your boat with pride and know you own a work of art. A boat that draws compliments on entering the harbor—not a “here today and gone tomorrow” styling. That’s why Doug Zurn was chosen as the designer. He has the best eye in the business and created the Shelter Island 38 for singer Billy Joel. A U.S. design patent protects that unique MJM signature look. There are other important benefits of the 50z’s sleek profile: Lower bridge clearance, greater stability for seaworthiness, faster hose-down after use, less windage and easier trucking overland.

10/22/2021. 2017 43z. Having an extensive history with J-Boats sailing yachts, my transition into the MJM line of power boats was like visiting an old friend. I've always been a fan of the functional aesthetic the Johnstone's bring to their designs. Exterior maintenance is minimized without sacrificing the boat's fantastic looks.

  4. Downeast Recommendations

As far as a narrow beam compared to a Black cove the difference is exactly one foot /mjm beam 10'2"- B.C. 11'2". Most of the options on the Black Cove are standard equipment on the mjm. We had one as a tender for a 58 meter yacht and after towing it for two years and guests / crew abuse the boat was darn near bullet proof with minimal issues.

  6. MJM Yachts 43z Boat Review: Cruising Compatible!

The popular MJM 43zi inboard was converted to the new 43z, featuring triple 300 stock or 350 HP Mercury Verado outboard engines. While cruising in the mid-30 mph range with a top speed in the low 50s, the MJM 43z became a performance cruiser, still capable of island hopping and sandbar visits with its 26" draft, making it an ideal, easy to ...

  8. For Cruising's Sake: Testing The Artfully-Designed MJM 50z

The MJM 50z takes that metaphor and turns it on its head. In this composition, the boat is still the medium of the cruising artist, but instead of the chart she sketches her iterations of beauty on the face of the clock, the most precious of resources to all of us. The brainchild of Johnstone was expertly brought to life by Doug Zurn.

  9. We Test the New MJM 53z: Fast, Fun and Elegant

Mercury tested the boat earlier, hitting a top speed of 51.1 mph at 6,464 rpm with 800 gallons of fuel on board. (See Mercury's full performance chart with speed, fuel burn and range, below.) The highlights: at 8.7 mph, the boat burns 10.7 gph, and has a range of 740 miles. At 20.1 mph, it burns 55.2 gph, and has a range of 331 miles.

  10. MJM 50z

The MJM Yachts 50z has a modern look with a touch of the traditional. The epoxy construction creates a lightweight, deep-V hull.
