I have been a recreational sailor for many years, with a particular interest in small sailing craft; therefore much of the content of my 'blog' will be related to this subject.

Can't agree with you on this one Bill, bur perhaps beauty is in the eye of the beholder....give me a S.C.A.M.P. any day!

Scamp is a prettier boat, I grant you. Out of the two, I would prefer cruising Lucky Town 7. Scamp is a better day boat, without a doubt, but she lacks accommodation, and you can't sail her from an enclosed position. Cheers, Bill.

Bill, have you seen the Adelie 14, and the Adelie 16? http://www.bateau.com/proddetail.php?prod=AD14#.UfQdleDFXZs I thought they might appeal to you. But they also cannot be sailed from inside like LT. Michalak designed some boats with such cabins though. His IMB seems equivalent to the Lucky Town: http://www.duckworksbbs.com/plans/jim/imb2/index.htm

I can't comment on the art of enclosed sailing, something that doesn't appeal to me I must say! You have had an enormous amount of experience in your Paradox so have obviously formed an affinity for that sort or thing. My problem with the LT7 is not purely aesthetics, I believe you can only take the "quart into a pint pot" principal so far before it becomes a farce..... why not just build a slightly bigger boat? Also the low hull form and extremely high top sides doesn't, in my mind, make a vessel that would perform in anything but lake like conditions and moderate winds. I admire people that have the courage of their own convictions, but this design doesn't fit my idea of a craft I would willingly go to sea in let alone venture out into the steep tumbling seas of the East Coast estuaries.

Sail and Rowing Boats

leif 7.

The Leif 7’ is a handy little tender. Many large-boat owners with moored or anchored-out vessels enjoy the Leif’s spunky agility; whether its a jaunty trip around the marina or shoreline gunkholing, this little dingy will get you where you want to go. The interior is entirely open—no daggarboard or trunk. Wonderful sprawling room for one or two people is accomplished by utilizing an exterior keel for good windward ability. Two-station oarlock sockets allow for rowing flexibility. With flotation cushions for seats, a varnished Leif floats you along in nut-shell quality. Our customers have reported very good sailing ability in a chop as well as a light breeze.

Length: 7'-1"

Beam:4'-2"

Weight: 50 lbs.

Sail Area: 35 sq. ft.

Leif 8 and 10

The Leif 8’ and 10’ are very similar to the Leif 7’–the biggest change being built-in seats. Although either boat will sail faster with one person, the 8’ has room for two people. The 10’ will hold three with an occasional fourth. As an option, the Leif 10’ is also available (no extra cost) with a daggarboard and trunk rather than the full-length keel. Leif owners often cartop to ponds or lakes, leave the car and sail away.

Sea Shell 8 and 10This is a fast, agile and stable vlet style pram. Of all of our boats, this is the design that demonstrates the heritage of the Dutch vlets and the Norwegian holmsbuprams, and has greatly influenced subsequent Shell Boat designs. The traditional vlet shape makes the Sea Shell an ideal tender—she tows extremely well. The sailing rig is very easy to set up and use. Its folding mast enables the entire rig to be stowed in the boat and set up in two minutes, even while out on the water (same rig as the Leif series). Although seldom necessary, a small outboard can be mounted on the transom. These boats are very agile and easily rowed. (Sea Shell 10 shown)Sea Shell 8             Sea Shell 10_____________           _____________Length: 7'-10""               10'-0"Beam: 4'-2"                    5'-3"Weight: 75 lbs.              100 lbs.Sail Area: 35 sq. ft.       50 sq. ft.

A boat to take you to all the shallow water places that most sailors never see up close (and to some deep ones too). It is easily trailered or car topped and can even be launched from many places without a ramp. Designed to be comfortably paddled or rowed and it can be sailed in less than a foot of water. Twin ultra shallow keels protect the bottom and provide lateral resistance for sailing to windward. The modest sailing rig weighs only nine pounds: the mast can be left standing with sail wrapped, or broken down and stowed in the boat or your car.

The Swifty 12 is our most popular boat, very fine for sailing, also great for rowing and motoring. Docile and easily handled, the Swifty will plane on a reach in a good breeze - while you fly, you’re dry! It has plenty of room for three or four people, but will perform best with one or two.

This design incorporates sealed flotation chambers under the front deck and all seats. The hull is constructed on a simple building jig and can be planked in one day.

The single-sailed cat rig is leg o’ mutton style using a curved sprit boom. Some owners have modified to a sloop by adding a jib. The folding 17’ mast enables quick set-ups or take downs - the entire rig can be stowed in the boat.

Length: 12'-0"

Beam: 5'-2"

Weight: 125 lbs.

Sail Area: 62 sq. ft.

SWIFTY   11

The Swifty 11 is our newest and smallest Swifty. It has the same beam as the original Swifty 12 but has been made more compact, having proportions much like that of the traditional cat boats. Any favorable comparison with the famous Beetle Cats of the early part of the last century would be considered a compliment!

The sail rig is our standard leg o’ mutton style using a curved sprit boom. The folding 17’ mast enables quick set ups or take downs - the entire rig can be stowed in the boat. The boat can be rowed very well and also can be used with a small outboard. The large deck area is made of beautiful hardwood marine ply, which will look great if you choose to varnish.

The Swifty 14 has the same hull shape as the Swifty 12,  but has been scaled up. Increasing the length by two feet produces an increase in volume of over 50%. Although one person can handle it easily, it will sail very well with a crew of two, three or even four people. The 19’ mast folds in half to stow easily in the boat. The rig sets up just like the Swifty 12.

Length  14'-0"

Beam  6'-0"

Weight 165 lbs.

Sail Area 85 sq ft

SCHOONER 15 1/2

The cat schooner rig on this boat has some very interesting characteristics. Although there are two masts it is very simple to build, set up, and sail. The masts are single piece and short enough to fit in the boat. The straight booms stow very nicely along with the masts. The sail has a luff sleeve resulting in more efficient air flow around the mast.

Reefing can be accomplished by stowing the foresail boom and rolling part of the sail onto the mast. If you don’t wait until things get too rough this can be done on the water. Because the masts are the same diameter, various sail arrangements are possible. The lowest power set-up is to stow the main mast and boom (leaving them ashore if possible) and moving the smaller fore mast to the main mast step.

Sailing performance has been very impressive. Single handing is no problem as both sheets lead directly to the helm. The daggerboard can also be reached from the helm. Speeds over 7 kts are readily attained in winds of 15 kts. Two rowing stations are provided. The boat can be rowed easily by one or two people. A small outboard motor, gas or electric, can be used.  A 4 hp will get you up to over 10 kts.

Length  15'-6"

Beam  5'-3"

Weight  155 lbs

Sail Area  94 sq. ft.

I have a '70's 23' IONA Yacht sloop. I've had it for several years. But I cannot find out any information about the origin of the vessel, design, manufacturer or other info. The other day someone pointed out that my sail number was "5" and it has the original logo, sometimes mistaken for an Islander logo. The sail was a McKibbin and is probably the original. But the McKibbin web site has no information about the sail registry. I have tried several other web searches for the information and now am turning to you guys. Does anyone know "anything" about this boat??? She is a sturdy little craft. Help... Jeff [email protected]

Iona was a brand name of products built by Islander Yachts.
Islander Yacht Story Thanks to your post I decided to google Islander Yacht. I found a long post by one of the former owners that gave a really detailed (took me 15 minutes to read it) history. The article appears on www.islandersailboats.com under the "History" tab written by Ralph Brown. For my part I was please to learn that the IONA was made from the Islander molds after the molds were sold to other yacht makers (Nordic Yachts and Mariner Yacht Company). In the article the author mentions the I24 as the origin of the IONA. I guess it is easy to shorten or lengthen a mold a bit. At any rate, it sounds like there were not a lot of IONA '23s built. Seems like there were some 32' models and a 25' one too. Guess it will be impossible to find out anymore details about the model. But it is nice to learn what I could. If anyone has more information to add, please do. Thanks again...
IONA Re-visited Still looking for information on my IONA yacht. Maybe a recent visitor to this forum will come across this thread and be able to add something to the history, or the specs. I wanted to get information because I am being asked to get a PHRF rating for the boat. Any help will be appreciated.
Still Looking for info on IONA Maybe some of the new readers will know about the IONA I have. Please read the thread and comment if you can give me any information or direct me to someone or someplace that can. Thanks Jeff

I do not own an islander, but googlig around I've found this, navigating the web: Islander 23: W.I.B. Crealock, NA. Wayfarer Yachts. 1969 @$2,750. Also built in the U. K. by Russell Marine. Could you post some photos from your boat?
'69 Islander 23 Hi, I believe, from what I have googled, the '69 23' Islander was the forerunner. I have a post earlier in this thread that directed you to a long post from a former owner of the Islander yacht manufacturer. He told the story of the IONA as a minor comment in his tale about the Islander company. Check it out if you like. I'd be happy to post a picture of the Iona if I knew how. I'll try.... If this doesn't work, email me at [email protected] and I will send you a couple.

Nice boat, definitely not looking like an Islander. I think the images may be of great help in your search. Cheers.
Anymore info on IONA? Still hoping for more info on the IONA sailboat specifications or history. Please read the above thread and help if you can. thanks Jeff
Latest.... Donated the IONA to a boys camp on Catalina Island for their program. It is a good training boat, very forgiving. And all lines lead to cockpit so it is easy to handle. And the boys can actually work on fixing it up. But I found a ketch in San Pedro that I am looking into with a partner. So I started a thread on the search for information on Herreshoff 28. Visit if you like. Pictures.... Casting off....

iona 23 If your boat is hull #5, I'm the original owner. I bought it in 1973; there were several hulls offerred but their craftsmanship then was lacking (the weave pattern showed thru on several hulls). She was a very stiff sailing boat with an 1100# lead keel and extra strong 3/8" rigging. We loved sailing her in the winter when many boats were sailing with reefed mains; I can't remember many times when she buried her rail. The design of the outboard mount was crap, fabricated out of attractive phillippine mahogany but cut so the 1st good wave going out the Newport channel and OOPs! the motor was free and heading for the bottom. Lucky I always had a lanyard on it. The full flat keel allowed us to careen her on the little beach near Balboa Island's Grand Canal (only when there was a high high tide). Friends promptly disappeared. Hated parting with her! Maynard Batchelder
