Most people think of sailing excursions when they’re vacationing on a tropical island somewhere but there are plenty of places to hop aboard a sailboat to enjoy a day on the water right here on Long Island. Below we found just five of the many sailing charters you can book close to home.

Nautical Dreamer Sailing Charters - The Nautical Dreamer II is a Beneteau 50 sailing yacht that leaves out of Greenport Harbor. Choose from full day to 2-hour cruises. Overnight stays, weekends, and custom trips are also available. Location: Brewer Yacht Yard, Greenport Harbor, (631)767-0149.

Sailacat - A catamaran, Sailacat's charter boat offers private sail charters, sunset sails and boat tours in Historic Sag Harbor. Available for 4-hour sails with a beach break and swim time on weekends. They offer 2-4 hour sails midweek. Location: Sag Harbor, (631) 682-8288.

The Ginny Marie Schooner - The Ginny Marie is a 38’ wooden schooner that goes out of Port Jefferson Harbor. It’s historic, old world sailing that is a little romantic and a lot of fun. She can take up to 6 people on private charters that run 10am, 1pm, 4pm, and 6pm daily. Location: Harborfront Park, Port Jefferson, (631) 223-9180.

MTK Cruises - Offering three different vessels, MTK Cruises has Tomoka, a 40’ pontoon boat and two 27’ sailing catamarans, the Eleanor’s Pearl and the Calvin John. The pontoon can accommodate up to 33 people and the catamarans up to six. Each vessel can go to their 20’ water trampoline for a private gathering on the water or just cruise and relax. Location: 59 Star Island Road, Montauk, (631) 668-8079.

Layla Sailing - A 45’ sailing yacht available to take private charters of up to six people at a time. They offer morning, half-day, full-day, and sunset sails. The Layla is female owned and operated by Captain Liz. Location: 1410 Manhanset Ave, Dock H4, Greenport, (631) 319-0161.

The 65-foot Mon Tiki Largo, the 40-foot Mon Tiki and the 26-foot Mon Tiki Mini — all catamarans — are playfully named after explorer Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki. Amelia Ryan, who owns and operates the line with her husband, Capt. David Ryan, says the cruises explore a world beyond the chic resort community. “All of that falls away when you are out on the water with the sounds of the wind, the waves and the natural beauty,” which occasionally includes dolphin sightings, Ryan says. Passengers can bring their own lunch and beverages on a two- to three-hour private sail (starting $250) through early October, and there's plenty of time to take a plunge into the water from the vessel's swim ramp and paddleboards (life jackets provided).

It became a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

Catamarans on Long Island?

  • Add to quote

long island catamaran sailing

I guess he means fast And it would depend on how big you want ,trailer and 18'(wet) or a big cat left in the water (big dollars) On small it works out better on the south shore because the state ramps have equal access to the water ON the North shore it is all controlled buy each TOWN and the ramps are so far from the sailing area it is a PITA

He's talking about the tendency to hobby horse, or a tendency to bounce fore-aft faster than a similar size monohull. With less ballast a typical cat will be more affected (generate more motion) in smaller waves. If you go watch some videos of ocean going cats you can see they tend to bounce a little faster. It's a tradeoff though since you have much less side to side motion.

One thought...in an area where slips are in short supply... boats that don't fit in standard slips and need T-heads are really difficult and perhaps also will pay a premium for dockage. Check out your local situation before you buy a beamy cat. (or choose a skinny cat!)

long island catamaran sailing

There are 5 gemini's on LI that I know of, skinny cats rock! Search youtube for the video's made by Starrider.

Thank You for your replies, I have the dream of sailing the eastern coast and just wondering what everyone thinks. I live on the south shore of Long Island, but I also have family on the north shore ( Southold ) I have sometime before I retire and fullfilling my dream of sailing the eastern coast. If money was not an issue ( and no I am not wealthy!) Would you recomend a monohull over the multihull for the NY area.

Suggest a monohull. If you dream of east coast sailing...probably a good idea to keep keep depth at 5.5ft. or less and mast height at 64 or less for the ICW. Light Long Island summer winds argue in favor of a light, easily powered hull rather than a heavily built offshore cruiser. This does not mean POORLY built...just using modern construction techniques and not getting an over built boat for conditions you will never see.

bmartin220 said: Since I am new to sailing, I was reading " My First Sailboat: How to Find and Sail the Right Boat for you" by Daniel Spurr.(a very informative book) When the author talks about catamarans, he states that catamarans can be " snappy" in choppy waters. I know Long Island can have some choppy waters at times. Can anyone tell me what exactly "snappy" would mean, and would anyone recomend or discourage sailing a catamaran in Long Island waters. I am new to sailing and any advice would be greatly appreciated. Click to expand...

long island catamaran sailing

If I lived on the South Shore (eg., Great South Bay) I would seriously consider a multihulled sailboat as the water can be pretty skinny there and the wind tends to be better in the summer season. You can't beat their speed and stability on flatter water with a monohull - Chuckles & the Dog will attest to that. That said, I have seen LI Sound so whipped up that even a 50' mono hull's motion could be described as 'snappy' when the swells are running 6' and close together in 40+ knot wind. In weather like this I would only want to be on a big mono hull or safely on shore. Of course a huge multi huller would be pretty stable too but would not be an entry level boat due to cost. Good luck with your research.

Catamaran on LIS I have done a fair amount of research on this. I sail out of CT, and I used to keep my boat in Sag Harbor. I wanted to get a more cruising friendly boat, but my town limits boats on town moorings to 36'. My wife wanted more amenities - she never wants to see another marina bathroom again! We also want to do some cruising with our twin daughters (8 years old). No question there are advantages and disadvantages for both monohulls and catamarans, but I've decided to switch to a catamaran. I think you will find that on most nasty days, you are probably not going to want to go out sailing any way. The transient dock issue will be something to consider. However, with the self-contained boat, and shallow draft, I expect to do a fair amount of anchoring and mooring. The davits on the boat allow me to carry a better dinghy for the trips to shore. I would also agree that for your current location, a catamaran would be better. The shallow depths of the south shore of LI really argue for the shallow drafts of a cat. I would be happy to discuss with you further if you want to send me a PM. Good luck!

Long Island 87′ – Sailing Catamaran

24 October 2023 | Members' news

long island catamaran sailing

JFA Yachts continues the development of the Long Island range, creating a Long Island 87′ based on the 2 previous Long Island 85′ that have sailed extensively, from Antarctica to Greenland, from the Pacific to the Baltic Sea…

This new 87′ model will feature a new superstructure with more modern lines, an extended flybridge, and will be equipped with the latest technologies to ensure passengers comfort for worldwide voyages.

Remember that JFA Yachts stands out in the market of sailing and motor catamarans with the  Long Island  range, known for their aluminium hulls and composite decks.

Like other models, the  Long Island 87′  boasts generous dimensions and proportions, offering what discerning owners are looking for: volume and brightness, comfort in navigation, reliability, and performance for long-distance sailing, along with exceptional construction quality specific to JFA Yachts’ craftsmanship.

Designed by  Marc Lombard Yacht Design Group  for the naval architecture, the 87′ version is similar to the 86′ motor version and is characterized by an expansive flybridge. With a navigation station, a sheltered bar, a large salon with numerous seats, the upper deck allows you to create different, personal spaces that benefit from unparalleled views. The flybridge roof will be equipped with solar panels to supply electricity during anchorages, reducing the use of generators.

The  Long Island 87′  offers a spacious indoor/outdoor living space on the main deck, thanks to an exceptionally wide deck exceeding 11 meters. The sheltered and shaded outdoor space, the bar, the salon, and comfortable sunbathing areas allow guests to share unforgettable moments in the open air.

The aft deck, where the indispensable tender is housed during navigation, easily allows the creation of a relaxation area or a genuine launching beach for multiple water-sports.

The cockpit extends indoors with a salon to port and a dining area to starboard. This interior salon is exceptionally luminous due to the aft glass door and large portholes on the sides.

On the port side of the salon, a few steps lead to the owner’s cabin. Occupying the entire width of the roof, this cabin offers incredible size and an unrivalled 180° view for a vessel of this size, (whether sail or motor). A few steps permit access to a door leading directly onto the foredeck.

The port hull comprises the owner’s bathroom, a children’s cabin with 4 beds, and a guest cabin aft. The starboard hull comprises another guest cabin and the crew area with a skipper’s cabin, crew cabin, galley, and crew mess. The vessel totals no less than 124m² and can accommodate 10 guests and 4 crew members in the utmost comfort.

In keeping with their collaboration with JFA Yachts,  Darnet Design  will once again design the interior with a personalized ambience for the future owner.

It is with emotion that we recall here the words of Marc Lombard, who thus defined this range of luxury offshore catamarans: ‘The Long Island catamarans are simple, efficient, seaworthy… and refined.’ In line with the 2 Long Island 85′ and the Long Island 78′ Power, we can bet that the  Long Island 87′  will once again confirm these words!

‘We are very excited to launch this Long Island 87’ project. We found this yacht to be the perfect balance between performance under sail and functional living spaces. The Long Island 87’ is the optimal proven blue water sailing catamaran available in the market today and well suited for our specific mission, to circumnavigate the globe with our family of four in unparalleled comfort, safety, and luxury.’ comments the future owner.

This boat was sold through  David Johnson – Denison Yachting,  representing the client.

Our Reviews

2013-08-04 15.36.51.jpg

My family and I had a great day on the water with Captain Steve, who made the experience fun, as we cruised the Long Island sound, with a solid 10-15 knots worth of wind. The highlight was when my daughter took the 'wheel' and steered the boat, and felt the wind in the sails...she's hooked.

  • What to expect onboard? Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled start time. Please also allow time to park, as there is no parking for Marina guest on the Hotel property. Once aboard, you will be briefed on safety procedures and discuss our sail plan. Sailing is an active sport, winds and sea state can change at anytime. A sailboat when under sail will heel (tipping to one side or the other caused by the force of the wind on the sails) That being said, it's nothing to worry about, the heeling effect can be controlled by the Captain and this sailboat will not tip over. You will also have the option to motor around (without unfurling the sails) or drop anchor for a more stable experience, giving you the opportunity to swim, dine, sun and chill on deck. The 2007, 34 foot Beneteau Oceanis 343 Sailing Yacht is equipped with a roller furling main and head sail for quick and easy departure and return. A large cockpit area that will comfortably seat 6 passengers. If interested, you will have the opportunity to take the helm, trim the sail and pilot the boat. There is a Bluetooth Stereo, TV, Head (bathroom), full kitchen ( refrigerator, microwave, stove and oven). There is swim ladder and platform with outdoor shower. There is also a collapsible Bimini top for shade. Please bring food, beverages, sun screen, hats, towels, sun glasses. Life jackets for children under 13. I have several available, if needed. Sorry, no Extra-Large hard sided coolers are allowed on board. All personal items must be secured for sailing in windy conditions. Barefoot on the boat is preferred, if not, please wear soft soled shoes. No shoes with heels are permitted on board. If winds are forecast to exceed 20 knots or thunderstorms are in the area, the Captain reserves the right to delay or postpone the sail for another date. Safety is top priority!
  • What are the features of your boat? Bluetooth Stereo Bimini top for shade - collapsible for full sun Full Kitchen - microwave, oven, stove, refrigerator Head (Bathroom) with Shower Transom (back of boat) Swim platform with Shower Interior cabin with table Television Swim noodles Life jackets are available for everyone on board. You are welcome to bring food and beverages, including alcohol. Just a quick reminder to drink responsibly, the Captain has the right to terminate a charter due to intoxication. Note it is cooler out on the water, so bring extra clothes, especially for an evening cruise. Bathing suit and towel if you plan to swim. **Please note, no large hard sided coolers with wheels are allowed on the boat. You are welcome to bring to to them to the dock and items will be transferred to the refrigerator and smaller cooler on board.
  • Whats your cancellation policy? We offer a full refund up to 7 days prior. 50% refund up to 3 days prior. Reschedule due to bad weather, it's the Captains Call. Saftey is our #1 priority!
  • How many guests can I bring? U.S. Coast Guard requlations require that the # of guests be limited to 6 people regardless of age. Sorry no dogs or pets are allowed on board.
  • Are Children allowed? Yes, but note this is not recommended for children under the age of 3. All children under 13 are required to wear a life jacket at all times when on deck. I have a several life jackets available, but for best fit, bring your own if available.
  • Do you offer gift certificates? Yes, you can buy a Gift Card for any amount and apply it towards any sailing experience. Please find the link to Gift Cards below and in the main menu. https://www.captainstevesailing.com/gift-card
  • Where do I get on board? Call or text Captain Steve for detailed directions 516-902-9099
  • Where can I park my car? Please note that there is no parking available on the Hotel property for Marina guests. Metered parking is available on Main Street & the 'Passport Parking' app can be used to refill your meter remotely. Parking is also available across the street from the Hotel in the residential neighborhood or at the Port Washington Town Dock parking lot at 347 Main Street in Port Washington.
  • What is the deal with inclement weather? We reschedule due to inclement weather. If the winds and seas are too rough for sailing we reschedule. If it's raining or lightning storms are tracking toward our area we reschedule. Sustained winds over 20 knots will warrant rescheduling. Note, many weather forecasts are for the Tri-State area, we generally sail within a 10 mile radius, and keep a close eye on the local weather.
  • Is there a bathroom on board? Yes, there is a fully functioning bathroom on board. Toilet paper is located in the cabinet under the sink. To flush the toilet, you can move the lever to the left ( wet side) this will allow water to enter the toilet bowl when pumping up and down. To empty the toilet bowl, move the lever to the right and pump up and down until rempty. Please do not put anything inside the bowl aside from human waste or toilet paper. Paper towels of any kind will clog the plumbing system. There is a waste water holding tank that holds the waste and is pumped out once each week. There is no access to a public bathroom at the Fathoms Hotel for marina guests.
  • What is a Community Sail? A Community Sail is a semi private sail where each seat is sold individually. There is a maximum of 6 guests. You can purchase 1-6 seats for a Community Sail based on availability for that date.

Inside JFA Yachts' Long Island 85 catamaran NDS Evolution

On a bright spring morning in Southern Brittany, the second JFA Long Island 85 catamaran NDS Evolution gracefully leaves the dock in Concarneau. There is a breeze of 25 knots blowing and within minutes of the sails being hoisted, the 26.25 metre yacht is racing along at 15 knots.

It doesn’t take much for her to get up to speed. During her sea trials in France she proved this expertly by achieving six knots of speed in just five knots of wind. The transition from power to sail is seamless. Lines lead back to a flybridge equipped with hydraulic winches, which offers excellent manoeuvrability and easy sail handling, even with a limited crew.

The Long Island semi-custom catamaran was designed by the Marc Lombard Yacht Design Group to a simple design brief. The owners, who were already experienced catamarans owners, revealed their plans to circumnavigate the globe, including visits to both poles with family living aboard for long periods. High performance and comfort were key.

As a result, the 85 sailing catamaran offers the interior space and performance of a much bigger monohull, but with a smaller draft and more stability. The draft, which measures just 2.24 metres, also ensures access to many of the world’s best anchorages.

Drawing on JFA Yachts’ 25-year history and consequent reputation for constructing reliable, luxurious, ocean going vessels, NDS Evolution was built from an aluminium hull and composite superstructure. The size of the yacht and her large freeboard also deliver a smooth and comfortable ride, thanks to the powerful carbon rig.

Great attention was also given to ensure the yacht was simultaneously lightweight and high performance. The hull, superstructure and limited use of teak decking all contribute to the overall displacement of just 56 tonnes. The yacht’s performance, reliability and style are further embedded in the choice of a carbon mast and boom and fat head mainsail.

The deck layout is generous making sail handling even easier; the cockpit is kitted out with a lounge area to starboard and dining table to port, with each side flanked by a large sunpad. Like the flybridge, this area can be completely closed off and heated in cooler climes; perfect for NDS Evolution’s adventurous itinerary. There is ample storage for an inflatable stand up paddleboard, wakeboard, four bicycles and diving equipment while a five-metre tender can be easily launched with a hydraulic Tenderlift platform for adventures ashore.

Inside, JFA Yachts’ attention to detail is no less noticeable. Darnet Design was brought on board to create the yacht’s interior décor, which prominently features oak and walnut woodwork and creates a contemporary ambiance. The elegant full beam owner’s cabin sits forward, with windows on all three sides offering panoramic views.

Accommodation is for nine guests and four crew members. As well as the owner's cabin, this includes a children’s cabin with three beds and two double guest cabins. The crew are treated to plenty of space across a twin cabin and large galley equipped with a crew mess.

The interior comfort, sail handling stability and high performance of this smooth cruising catamaran means NDS Evolution is more than up to her upcoming far flung adventures as her owners prepare to circumnavigate the globe.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Between a Sailboat or Catamaran for Your Sailing Adventures

C hoosing between a sailboat and a catamaran for your sailing adventures is a significant decision that depends on various factors, including your sailing preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. Here's an ultimate guide to help you make an informed decision:

1. Sailing Experience:

  • Sailboats: Typically require more skill and experience to handle, especially in adverse weather conditions. Ideal for sailors who enjoy the traditional feel of sailing and are willing to invest time in learning and mastering the art.
  • Catamarans: Easier to handle, making them suitable for beginners. The dual-hull design provides stability, reducing the learning curve for those new to sailing.

2. Space and Comfort:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a narrower beam and less living space. However, some sailboats may offer comfortable cabins and amenities.
  • Catamarans: Wider beam creates more living space. Catamarans often have multiple cabins, spacious saloons, and expansive deck areas, providing a more comfortable living experience.

3. Stability:

  • Sailboats: Monohulls can heel (lean) while sailing, which some sailors enjoy for the thrill but can be discomforting for others.
  • Catamarans: Greater stability due to the dual hulls, providing a more level sailing experience. Reduced heeling makes catamarans suitable for those prone to seasickness.

4. Performance:

  • Sailboats: Known for their upwind performance and ability to sail close to the wind. Some sailors appreciate the challenge of optimizing sail trim for efficiency.
  • Catamarans: Faster on a reach and downwind due to their wide beam. However, they may not point as high into the wind as monohulls.
  • Sailboats: Typically have a deeper draft, limiting access to shallow anchorages and requiring deeper marina berths.
  • Catamarans: Shallow draft allows access to shallower waters and secluded anchorages, providing more flexibility in cruising destinations.
  • Sailboats: Generally more affordable upfront, with a wide range of options available to fit different budgets.
  • Catamarans: Often more expensive upfront due to their size and design. However, maintenance costs may be comparable or even lower in some cases.

7. Mooring and Docking:

  • Sailboats: Easier to find slips and moorings in marinas designed for monohulls.
  • Catamarans: Require wider slips and may have limited availability in certain marinas, especially in crowded anchorages.

8. Intended Use:

  • Sailboats: Ideal for traditional sailors who enjoy the art of sailing, racing enthusiasts, or those on a tighter budget.
  • Catamarans: Suited for those prioritizing comfort, stability, and spacious living areas, especially for long-term cruising and chartering.

9. Resale Value:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a more established resale market, with a wider range of buyers.
  • Catamarans: Growing in popularity, and well-maintained catamarans often retain their value.

10. Personal Preference:

  • Consider your personal preferences, the type of sailing you plan to do, and the kind of lifestyle you want aboard your vessel.

In conclusion, both sailboats and catamarans have their advantages and disadvantages. Your decision should be based on your individual preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. If possible, charter both types of vessels to experience firsthand how they handle and to help make a more informed decision based on your own preferences and needs.

Sailing in the Bahamas : unforgettable stopovers

long island catamaran sailing

Sailing in the Bahamas is a dream for most people. In the heart of the Caribbean Sea, the archipelago offers the chance to enjoy sailing through splendid scenery, pleasant places to stop off and memorable activities. In this article, the Outremer team tells you what they consider to be the essential stages of a catamaran cruise in the Bahamas.

Sailing in the Bahamas, an exceptional voyage

A renowned destination for catamaran sailing.

Made up of 700 islands and 2,000 islets covering an area of almost 250,000 km², the Bahamas is an immense playground for sailing enthusiasts. Every year, a large number of yachtsmen head for the destination in monohull or multihull yachts. Most arrive from the American coast, with Miami and Florida only 200 nautical miles away. Other sailors come from several islands in the Caribbean arc: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, the British Virgin Islands, Saint-Martin, Guadeloupe…

Whether sailing a sailboat or a catamaran, yachtsmen in the Bahamas enjoy variable conditions depending on whether they are sailing along the windward or leeward coasts. Most of the time, sailing is comfortable, in a particularly pleasant environment.

The seabed is rich and shallow: catamarans in particular can sail and anchor in very shallow waters, in sumptuous spots. Finally, with the tropical climate, it’s pleasant to swim all year round, whatever the time of year.

Planning to visit the Bahamas by sailboat? Whether you’re cruising with your family, as a couple, with friends or on your own, there’s always plenty to discover. The islands of the Bahamas offer an incredible variety of activities: whether the crew of your boat want to party, relax or go on an inland adventure during stopovers, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy!

long island catamaran sailing

A must-see in the Bahamas: Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park

If there’s one place not to miss while sailing in the Bahamas, it’s the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park: in the largest marine park in the Caribbean, covering more than 450 km², you can sail through idyllic waters and fantastic landscapes. The marine and underwater fauna and flora are exceptional and will make your stay an exceptional experience.

Our best catamaran ports of call

When you choose to sail to the Bahamas, you’re sure to experience some exhilarating moments. Whether you start your journey from Nassau – the capital of the Bahamas – from George Town – on the island of Great Exuma, or come from further afield, you should be won over by the destination! Here, for us, are the most beautiful stop-off points to add to your itinerary.

long island catamaran sailing

The Exumas archipelago

The Exumas archipelago alone contains 365 islands, suitable for young and old sailors alike. Most of them are easy to visit on foot. On land, you can eat, hike or relax on the magnificent beaches. At sea, you can indulge in a multitude of water sports: swimming, stand-up paddling or kayaking, fishing, diving or snorkelling… always in crystal-clear waters!

long island catamaran sailing

Norman’s Cay

To the north of the Exumas archipelago, Norman’s Cay is one of our top recommendations for a stopover in the Bahamas. Whether you choose to moor your catamaran in a marina or to stay at anchor, you’ll be delighted by the discovery of this island! Don’t miss Norman’s Cay Sunken Plane in the south-east: the wreck of Pablo Escobar’s plane, sunk in just a few metres of water. Diving here, you can admire how, since 1980, the underwater flora and fauna have reclaimed the area…

long island catamaran sailing

A little further south, the island of Shroud Cay is also well worth a visit! Anchor your catamaran on the leeward side, to the west of the island, and head for The Washing Machine beach! It’s a famous site where, halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the water is particularly rough. Here you can go scuba diving or, if you don’t prefer to dive with a tank, simply enjoy some nice snorkelling sessions or a swim. The sharks here are harmless and it’s not unusual to be able to get close to them, or even stroke them.

long island catamaran sailing

Wardewick Wells Cay

If you enjoy walking in the heart of nature, you’ll love your catamaran trip to Wardewick Wells Cay. The island offers an exceptional setting and a number of waymarked paths, which are particularly well-suited to this activity. Boaters frequently climb Boo Boo Hill, the highest point on the island. The view from the summit alone is worth the climb! The beaches of Wardewick Wells Cay are not only some of the most beautiful, but also some of the least frequented in the archipelago.

Big Major Cay

Iguanas are a common sight on the beaches of the Exumas Islands, but it’s a different species that you’ll come across here on Big Major Cay: the island is not inhabited, but you’ll find plenty of pigs on Pig Beach! Fortunately, they are harmless and used to the passage of yachtsmen. Will you be brave enough to enjoy these picture-postcard landscapes while swimming with them?

long island catamaran sailing

Staniel Cay

To the south of the Exumas archipelago, the island of Staniel Cay also regularly welcomes catamarans. There are two places worth visiting here: Pirate Beach and Thunderball Cave. Both sites are easily accessible from the anchorage to the north-west of the island. Depending on the equipment on board your catamaran in the Bahamas, you can also go stand-up paddling or kayaking at Staniel Cay.

Great Exuma

It’s the largest island in the Exumas! In Great Exuma, the town of George Town is a key destination for yachtsmen sailing in the Caribbean. As with many of the islands in the archipelago, the coastline here too is lined with fine sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Of course, in the heart of the natural park, Great Exuma also boasts remarkable underwater flora and fauna.

Other ports of call outside the Exumas archipelago

Do you have more time, or would you like to get away from the Exumas archipelago? The good news is that the Bahamas has many more charming places to stop off at on a catamaran.

The Abacos Islands

The second-largest archipelago in the Bahamas after the Exumas Islands, the Abacos Islands are also very interesting for a catamaran cruise. During your stopover, you’ll enjoy typical, authentic colonial villages, as well as numerous tourist facilities – accommodation and restaurants. The Abacos Islands are also renowned for fishing and diving. One coral garden in particular attracts many yachtsmen: The Catacombs, on the shores of Green Turtle Cay.

Long Island

The island, which is 130 kilometres long and 6 kilometres wide, offers a number of great catamaran anchorages. If you’re a snorkeller in particular, this is a stopover not to be missed: on Long Island, you can discover the famous Dean’s Blue Hole: a blue hole over 200 metres deep…

Andros Island

It is best known for its coral reef, which is an impressive 300 kilometres long! But Andros is also the largest island in the Bahamas, with plenty of opportunities for stopovers and activities. Over the years, Andros has managed to remain peaceful and is still rarely visited. You can visit the national park or the underwater caves, and make historical and cultural discoveries.

Eleuthera Island

The island of Eleuthera is another great destination to explore on a catamaran in the Bahamas. Renowned for its authenticity and wild landscapes, it offers numerous anchorages right next to beautiful beaches. Choose white sand and surf in the north of the island, or pink sand and calm waters at Pink Sand Beach. Before setting off again, you can also try the natural pools at Queen’s baths.

You should now be ready to design your perfect cruising itinerary. Of course, this list of catamaran ports of call in the Bahamas is far from exhaustive: sailing in the Caribbean always offers wonderful surprises and is far from being limited to a handful of islands. Our final piece of advice is not to hesitate to leave the usual sailing routes to discover the territory for yourself. We look forward to hearing from you…

The Importance of Defining Success

In the Autumn of 2023, I ran a ‘Webinars for Women’ mini-series on transatlantic preparations. The first session was titled: “How to approach transatlantic preparation.” As I zoomed out of the nitty gritty of canned food recipes, spare parts inventories, and preventative sail repair and took a broader look at the framework for a successful crossing, I homed in on what I think the first and most important step is: defining your goal.

4Ever – Long Island 78 Power

long island catamaran sailing

A new power cat unit in Long Island range

Designed for large trips, the hulls will be made of aluminium while the deck and superstructures will be composite. Powered by two 500 hp engines, the cruising speed is set at 12 knots with a maximum speed of 18 knots (light). Like the previous Long Island, JFA Yachts and Marc Lombard have focused on the weight of the boat and its equipment. This displacement and the desired speed make it possible to install engines of reasonable size in order to lower the fuel consumption and the size of the tanks while offering a transatlantic autonomy.

The interior design and exterior styling of the boat will be by Franck Darnet Design and will call to mind the mixed oak and darker wood paneling of the Long Island 85 n°2. The nacelle will house the galley, main salon, dining area and a chart table. The port hull will have a large owner’s suite and a guest cabin. The starboard hull will have 3 guest cabins. An inner wheelhouse will be installed on the flybridge; an innovative feature in this type and size of boat. This space, designated for navigation, will also host a banquette and an office so you can relax and enjoy the view.

The outdoor spaces are also innovative with, in front of the nacelle, a lounge area and a sea water bath on the deck. Of course, in the back the interior salon extends to a large exterior cockpit. On the flybridge, a salon and dining area with a small kitchenette will be installed behind the wheelhouse.
