America's Cup Yachts

Built and raced by Japan this vessel came second to Team New Zealand in the 1995 Louis Vuitton Challenge. It competed in the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup alongside, Team New Zealand, One Australia and Tag Heuer. The yacht was then bought by the GBR Challenge and used as a training boat and was raced at the 150th America's Cup Jubilee 2001 in Cowes.

NZL41 remains in almost the same configuration as when she was raced ensuring  an authentic race experience, while minor alterations including hand rails ensure comfort and safety of those on board. She has even had the honour of having Prince William sail her in 2014 during the Royal tour.

Originally commissioned for German syndicate in 2003, Team New Zealand used her as a trial boat prior to their 2007 America's Cup campaign. NZL68 is also in virtually original race configuration, while minor alterations have been made to meet with maritime safety regulations.

The yacht has a keel bulb weighing 20 tonnes.

NZL 60, BACK ON DISPLAY

NZL60 was New Zealand’s second America’s Cup winning boat. The legendary International America’s Cup Class (IACC) 82 footer continued the innovative reputation that Team New Zealand had firmly established with winning the 1995 America’s Cup in San Diego against the notorious Dennis Conner.

NZL60 may not have the name recognition of her 1995 predecessor NZL32 (Black Magic), but as the first boat in the history of the America’s Cup to successfully defend the Auld Mug outside of the United States of America, she deserves just as much attention and why Sir Stephen Tindall has subsequently looked after her, with the objective of putting the national treasure on display as it sits now for the benefit of the New Zealand public.

As Defender in the 30th Americas Cup in 2000, Team New Zealand did not sail in the Louis Vuitton Cup while the 11 Challengers fought it out in one of the most exhilarating and competitive challenger selection series ever. In the end, the popular Italian syndicate ‘Prada Challenge’ beat America One 5-4 in the best of 9 in the Louis Vuitton Cup final.

All the while Team New Zealand’s NZL60 and NZL57 had been pushing themselves equally hard in combat to battle harden themselves for what many believed was going to be a titanic battle for the America’s Cup with the Italians- the first time in history that an America’s Cup Match did not involve an American challenger or defender.

NZL60 began the match in the same way its predecessor NZL32 did 5 years earlier, by leading from the outset and going on to win the opening race by 1 minute and 17 seconds. 10 days later Team New Zealand were sitting comfortably with a 4-0 lead, only one point away from a historic defence- the first time ever that the America’s Cup would be defended outside the United States.

The 2000 America’s Cup had been a catalyst for the redevelopment and reinvigoration of Auckland’s tired and run down Viaduct basin. Transforming it from a rough fishing village to the waterfront hub of downtown Auckland city. In the eight years the America’s Cup was in residence at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron between 1995- 2003, a thriving boat building and services industry grew in New Zealand worth more than a billion dollars. A small country at the edge of the south-west Pacific Ocean became the holiday destination for millions. 

Since its glory days in 2000,  NZL60 was initially used as a trail horse in the early part of the 2003 Team New Zealand defence helping the team race and develop NZL81 and NZl82. After NZL82 lost to Alignhi (SUI64), NZL60 was chartered to K-Challenge, a French-German yacht racing team who went on to race in the 2007 America’s Cup as Areva Challenge.

Renamed FRA60, NZL60 rolled over Alinghi during the pre cup regattas in 2005, impressively bringing Alinghi’s string of 31 wins during the pre-regattas to an end. For K-Challenge their win over Alinghi topped off what had been a superb regatta, which started with a win over Team New Zealand. The fact that K-Challenge beat both Team New Zealand and Alinghi is ironic because a handful of sailors in both those teams sailed NZL60 to victory in the 2000 defence and she could still hold her own more than 5 years after winning the Cup.

2007 was the last official America’s Cup outing for IACC yachts, as the America’s Cup moved on to other classes. For a brief time, sailing fans were looking forward to seeing a new class, the giant AC90, in action but the 2010 Deed of Gift match steered the Cup in the direction of multihulls.

The retirement plan for most IACC yachts normally consis ts of being sold to a charter boat company, where tourists and sailing fans replace elite sailing crews and sail around harbours in calm conditions. However, Sir Stephen Tindall kept NZL60 in storage until the decision was made to return her to her former glory with the intention of putting her on display to join New Zealand’s other two winning America’s Cup Class yachts down in Auckland’s Viaduct.  

"Black Magic is already on display inside the Maritime Museum, and in 2019, Emirates Team New Zealand’s winning AC50, “Aotearoa” was hung on the side of the team base as well. Finally, as of today, NZL60 takes her place, standing proud on her keel, between the two boats and looking just like she did when she crossed the line in 2000 when  Peter Montgomery d eclared " The America's Cup is still New Zealand's cup!"

NZL-20 (1992) hauled in Auckland during the 2003 America's Cup.  The innovative yacht has been carefully restored and maintained.  Note the famous bowsprit and the twin keel fin arrangement. There is no separate rudder. Both fins have rudder surfaces and the boat's tracking to windward is remarkable.  NZL-20 is in the opposite corner of the design envelope from today's America's Cup Class yachts, being of minimal length and extremely beamy.

NZL 20, the yacht used by New Zealand Challenge in the 1992 America’s Cup in San Diego in the United States, has sat at the Gulf Harbour Marina on Auckland’s Whangaparāoa Peninsula for more than a decade. Gulf Harbour marina manager Mike Keown said the marina seized the boat from its owner, who went into arrears with his fees. In an effort to recoup money lost in unpaid rent and to free up space at the busy marina, NZL 20 is now up for sale, again.

“Someone could get themselves a really nice project,” Keown said.

Went for a lot less the last times

Sadly I think it will never sail again. Will get stripped and cut into pieces.  

When sold prior it had a Gori three blade prop, an engine (Yanmar) and a huge wallop of lead bulb but one by one these items seem to have gone, and with them any value.

I can't imagine anyone sinking the $ into getting her sailing again. Would have to be someone with deep pockets and a deep connection this boat, and surely any such person would already have stepped in.

Swimming pool perhaps? Id say its worth whatever a rusty yanmar is less landfill costs. 

The 100' Carbon Beau Geste was arguably much more attractive proposition but after a stay at Gulf Harbour was chopped and bulldozed into North shore landfill, the 100 odd foot 'superyacht' built of glass in the East that was hauled at Gulf harbour then transferred to the New Plymouth waterfront outside Fitzroys was chopped and buried on the spot.

Indeed. Just anchor unattended in matiatia in a northerly blow and wait 6 weeks. Problem solved, apparently.

Theres probably 30-50k in scrap but unknown disposal costs-a chainsaw or digger would make fast work of it and a landfill to accept composite panels? A good project for a resourceful person, having a farm to park it on would help

Pretty sure it had overstayed its welcome there years ago. But somehow these things have a way of dragging on.

Built for the 1992 America’s Cup by Team New Zealand , NZL 10 & NZL 12 are Generation One International America’s Cup Class (IACC) yachts.

Sail Nassau is the only operator of IACC yachts anywhere in the Caribbean or along the East Coast of the United States.

The International America’s Cup Class yachts replaced the 12 metre design, which last raced in 1987.

They are much larger, more powerful, complex and costly than their predecessors, as they push the boundaries of high-tech composite engineering.

Driver in suspected DUI crash that killed 2 children may have left Monroe County tavern earlier

B ERLIN TWP. — Police investigated and a community mourned Sunday, the morning after a car crashed into a boat club building where a birthday party was being held, killing two young siblings — ages 5 and 8 — and injuring more than a dozen other people.

A 66-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was driving the vehicle that crashed and was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony, and taken to the Monroe County Jail, authorities said. More criminal charges are expected, police said.

In addition, authorities said Verna’s Tavern in Newport, where the driver of the car may have been just before the crash, had been shut down and was under investigation. The bar was back in operation late Sunday morning when a Free Press reporter and a photographer stopped by.

The Swan Boat Club — where the party was being held at 6332 Brancheau Road, about 30 minutes southwest of Detroit — posted on Facebook it would be closed Sunday, the result of the "terrible accident" with many injuries and much damage.

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough’s voice quivered as he spoke to news media.

He appeared to hold back tears as he read a statement that described the scene after the car went through a wall at about 3 p.m. Saturday. It was, he said, "extremely chaotic and with high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident."

Goodnough said 15 people, including adults, were injured.

The vehicle, he said, slammed into the north wall, moving fast enough to go about 25 feet into the building until it stopped. A doorbell cam video posted online shows what appears to be an SUV speeding toward the boat club, go out of view blocked by a stand of trees, and then a cloud of dust suddenly coming from offscreen. People can then be seen rushing out of the building.

Multiple agencies scrambled to reach the scene and try to provide aid.

During the news conference, those listening let out an audible ― and heartbreaking — gasp as the sheriff identified the dead children as brother and sister. The 5-year-old boy and his 8-year-old sister never had a chance to even get medical treatment. First responders pronounced them dead at the scene.

A GoFundMe fundraiser for the family, linked on the boat club's website , says the children's mother and older brother were also injured and remain hospitalized in critical condition.

The sheriff said that nine people, three of them children, were driven by ambulances and airlifted by two medical helicopters to area hospitals. As of late Saturday, they were facing serious, life-threatening injuries. Several other people, the sheriff added, were rushed away by nonemergency vehicles.

At the end of the news conference, the sheriff, in response to a reporter’s question, confirmed that the suspect may have been at Verna’s Tavern in Newport.

"We went in, we shut the business down," Goodnough added when pressed whether the tavern would be facing police scrutiny. "We are in the process of executing a search warrant for information as to the business conducted at that day."

A sign for the eatery describes it as "Home of the ½-pound Verna Burger" and a place for "good times & great friends since 1938."

After the crash, Goodnough said, investigators were working at the scene to process evidence, identify victims, interview witnesses and reunite family members separated in the sudden chaos of the deadly and tragic crash.

In a sad twist, the area where the tragedy unfolded has long been a place to enjoy life.

The boat club, which was started in the 1940s as a place for boating enthusiasts on Swan Creek to meet to play cards, have a beer and kickback, mostly during the hot summer months, has faced its share good and bad times over the years. It is just off Lake Erie.

The club, in its early years thrived, its website suggested .

The club history boasted of hosting "great regattas," "snow mobile races" and "famous chicken dinners," which it still offers. At one time, the club noted, its membership included Michigan’s Gov. G. Mennen (Soapy) Williams.

In the '70s, the website said its membership dropped to less than 50 members. But since then, the club — which now also offers dockage for more than 125 member boats up to 40 feet long — said its numbers have rebounded and was “sound and prosperous with a card-carrying membership of over 250!"

Names of the crash victims were not released.

Fishermen spot boat with 20 corpses floating off the coast of northeastern Brazil, reports say

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — A small boat full of decomposing corpses was spotted by fishermen off Brazil’s northeastern coast on Saturday, according to local news reports.

Brazil’s Attorney General’s office said in a statement that it has dispatched a forensics team to the area to determine where the bodies and the boat came from.

“Some reports say there could be up to 20 corpses” in the boat, the Attorney General’s office said in a statement. The office announced it is opening a criminal and a civil investigation into the incident.

The boat was floating off the coast of the state of Para in a remote location about 300 kilometers (185 miles) from the state capital Belem.

It wasn’t the first time that vessels carrying dead bodies were spotted by fishermen in the western side of the Atlantic Ocean. In 2021, at l east seven boats full of corpses washed up in Brazil and the Eastern Caribbean.

Investigations by The Associated Press and local authorities determined that some of these boats carried the corpses of African migrants who were trying to make it to the Canary Islands, but had missed their target and had drifted for weeks in the Atlantic Ocean.
