Yacht is a classic dice-rolling game that inspired the hit game Yahtzee by Milton Bradley. Play online against random opponents, create a game with your friends, or practice against the computer.

In Yacht, you need to make specific combinations that score the most points possible at the end of three rolls. At the end of the game, whoever has the most points wins. 

Every turn, you have three dice rolls. After your first roll, you can choose to hold dice. The dice you hold will not be part of your next roll. After three rolls, pick a category on the scorecard to lock in your points. If you aren't sure what each category means, tap on the name to get more details.

HINT: If you score 63 or more points in the upper section of the scorecard, you'll earn a 35-point bonus.

You can either play this game against a computer, or play online and go head-to-head against players anywhere in the world. Either way, you can expect to have a fun and exciting challenge.

Probably the biggest factor in this dice game is whether or not you are able to get the 35-point bonus. Because of this, you should try and focus on the upper section in order to work toward that bonus. 

Make sure to keep your chance section clear for as long as you can. It is nice to have a safety net that can catch you if you have a bad roll.

Yahtzee Rules

The objective of YAHTZEE is to get as many points as possible by rolling five dice and getting certain combinations of dice.

In each turn a player may throw the dice up to three times. A player doesn't have to roll all five dice on the second and third throw of a round, he may put as many dice as he wants to the side and only throw the ones that don't have the numbers he's trying to get. For example, a player throws and gets 1,3,3,4,6. He decides he want to try for the large straight, 1,2,3,4,5. So, he puts 1,3,4 to the side and only throws 3 and 6 again, hoping to get 2 and 5.

In this game you click on the dice you want to keep. They will be moved down and will not be thrown the next time you press the 'Roll Dice' button. If you decide after the second throw in a turn that you don't want to keep the same dice before the third throw then you can click them again and they will move back to the table and be thrown in the third throw.

Upper section combinations

• Ones: Get as many ones as possible.
• Twos: Get as many twos as possible.
• Threes: Get as many threes as possible.
• Fours: Get as many fours as possible.
• Fives: Get as many fives as possible.
• Sixes: Get as many sixes as possible.

For the six combinations above the score for each of them is the sum of dice of the right kind. E.g. if you get 1,3,3,3,5 and you choose Threes you will get 3*3 = 9 points. The sum of all the above combinations is calculated and if it is 63 or more, the player will get a bonus of 35 points. On average a player needs three of each to reach 63, but it is not required to get three of each exactly, it is perfectly OK to have five sixes, and zero ones for example, as long as the sum is 63 or more the bonus will be awarded.

Lower section combinations

• Three of a kind: Get three dice with the same number. Points are the sum all dice (not just the three of a kind).
• Four of a kind: Get four dice with the same number. Points are the sum all dice (not just the four of a kind).
• Full house: Get three of a kind and a pair, e.g. 1,1,3,3,3 or 3,3,3,6,6. Scores 25 points.
• Small straight: Get four sequential dice, 1,2,3,4 or 2,3,4,5 or 3,4,5,6. Scores 30 points.
• Large straight: Get five sequential dice, 1,2,3,4,5 or 2,3,4,5,6. Scores 40 points.
• Chance: You can put anything into chance, it's basically like a garbage can when you don't have anything else you can use the dice for. The score is simply the sum of the dice.
• YAHTZEE: Five of a kind. Scores 50 points. You can optionally get multiple Yahtzees, see below for details.

Multiple Yahtzees

The rules around multiple Yahtzees are a bit complex. There are a couple of different cases:

• You already have a Yahtzee: You get a 100 bonus points in the Yahtzee box, but you also have a joker, which means that you can choose another move for the Yahtzee you just got. If the number you got yahtzees with has not been filled out in the upper section, then you must choose that. E.g. if you get an additional Yahtzee with 2's, and you haven't filled out the 2's in the upper section then you must choose that, and get 10 points for it. If the upper section box is already filled then you can choose any of the lower region boxes, and they will be scored as normal. Yahtzee is a superset of 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind, full house and chance, but you can also choose small or large straight and will get the normal 30 and 40 points for those.

Multiplayer

Note: To keep things simple and even as possible, all multiplayer games allow multiple Yahtzees.

Strategy tips

Try to get the bonus. Focus on getting good throws with fives and sixes, then it won't matter if you put 0 in the ones or twos. You can always put in 0 for a combination if you don't have it, even if you have some other combination. E.g. if you had 2,3,4,5,6 and the only things you had left were Ones and Sixes, then it would be better to put 0 in Ones than to put only 6 in Sixes.

In the last couple of years I've made a number of simple online card games, including Hearts and Spades . After making seven card games and three solitaires I figured it was time to try something else, so I decided to make YAHTZEE (or YATZY as it's known here in Denmark, where the rules and scoring are also slightly different). It's been a fun game to make, and I'm looking forward to seeing how well Bill will play against human opponents :)

These pursuits offer a perfect excuse to act silly bringing the best out of yourself. Moreover, you can always add some music for fun or make your own house rules to make it even more interesting.

The good thing is you do not need to have anything for this one; other than guts to do things that can generate loud cheers. The only limit to what you can try is your imagination.

Cornhole has really become the go-to game for backyard barbecues and family picnics. It’s popular, easy to play, is great fun for all ages and just can be played anywhere.

But wait what about us who wants to play it in the water while being on a boating trip or boat party?

This one is rather special as of all Games To Play On A Boat; I personally find it most exciting and fun! It’s much similar to regular tubing but not exactly the same.

Most people are familiar with tubing in which you toe a tube with the help of a rope tied to the boat. It is called both relaxing and exciting at the same time. Almost everyone likes to enjoy a ride on the tube.

But what if you can simply add more thrill and excitement to the game. Rather than going for a regular tubing approach try speed tubing. It’s physically challenging and causes a sudden adrenaline rush.

Causing thrill and feeling of enjoyment especially when you are playing in a team. It simply involves towing two or more tubes at the time but at a greater speed around the lake.

The one team that manages to survive and does not fall into the water before the other wins. Considering the challenge involved I suggest to wear one life jacket for each; just in case to be safe.

Definitely not for amateurs who do not like to try something new. Wakeboarding is popular among young people who love the thrill and does not hesitate to go a little too far.

Developed from a combination of water sports like water skiing, surfing, and snow-based boardsports. It involves a wakeboard and a towing rope. Unlike most other watersports it’s relatively easy to learn.

Here your lower body is turned perpendicular to the boat direction. It is vital in this sport to stay afloat at the start. So wearing a professional life jacket or vest is a must after the board itself and the boots.

How to get up on a wakeboard:

• When you are starting do not fight the board
• Make sure the rope is on top of the boat and get in the couch position.
• Do not make the mistake to stand up too early otherwise you will standup and sink. So be very patient.
• Keep both hands on the handle of the tow rope as you slowly try to keep the board on its edge as the boats move.
• Do not resist and let the boat lift you.
• Now slowly turn the board putting your best foot forward.
• Now move side to side riding with your hand kept inside. There is no harm in keeping your hands outwards but keeping them inward helps with control.

This one is that game that you can easily play on a large deck or in water. Not to mention you do not need a large space for this game. But I personally prefer to play in the water.

Since its a two-player game there is no problem as such; for the whole team to get wet. You will always have enough players to play even if you do have enough players on board.

Take out your foam noodles, place the floating water mat into the water. Now joust! Once on the mat, each player will try to knock the other outback into the water. You may or may not need a life jacket.

There are many good-sized floating mats available that you can use. I would suggest buying 4-5 6 x 6 Feet mats and grouping them together. This way others can enjoy while the two will compete.

If there is something else I personally like to play on a family boat trip is water volleyball. Intex Pool Volleyball net is easy to inflate and came in with its own ball.

So unlike in water basketball, you did not need to buy a separate ball for the same. The best part is you can inflate this with your own mouth; meaning no need to buy or have an additional air pump.

You may think since it tends to float a bit; it is better to play in calm waters. But one can also make it anchor to its position. The pole bases come with anchor weights which makes it stick to its position.

The rules to play are similar to ordinary volleyball; with one exception. Here there is no such case as “ball out” in the middle of the water. Grab your friends and family for hours in this fun game.

My younger brother had stomp rockets for more than a year now. It never crossed into my mind that it can be played on a boat trip; unless I read something related on the internet just by luck.

Must say we tried this on our own on a boat trip with the family. I must say everyone who played fall in love with this game. Yes, kids take a bigger interest in this game but its still worth trying for adults.

You need to set the stomp rocket on the deck. Now stamp down on it with your stronger foot to fire. You will be surprised to see how far can this can actually go in the water.

Once fired two or more players will hop into the water to compete. The one who can bring back the stomp rocket back to the boat wins. The game is about speed, power, and competition.

If you are for a boat party that lasts for more than 6 hours; I would recommend adding kayak racing competition for the day time. It’s refreshing and fun to do especially in a group.

You can make your own house rules, race distance, participants, etc. Every time we ( I and my friends ) go organize a small boat party; we ask two participants to hop into the water.

Then we give each of them a kayak and anchor the boat some distance apart. Now the game is “who will reach to the boat first will win”. That is always better than solo kayaking.

I suggest not to bring more than 2-3 kayak on the boat as it will negatively affect the overall experience in the boat party. So bring them on board and have more fun!

There are numerous indoor games one can play on the boat. Either its the boat party or recreational boating trips; it fits well with the situation and bring more fun to the trip.

Far off it may look just other versions of a popular kids game, but up close each game has a twist.

That means that the very same games will become more fun to play in a group or with family on a boat than it uses to on land. Even when you are getting bored in between the boat trip; these games come in as a rescue.

7 FUN GAMES TO PLAY ON A BOAT

When it’s chilly on deck, there’s nothing more fun than hunkering down in a cozy cabin with a good boat game. Here are our 7 all-time favorite indoor boat games.

1. BOWDITCH BALDERDASH

Age: 12+, 4-6 players, Time: 20-60 minutes

What it is:

A word game where players invent bogus nautical definitions.

What you need:

• Pens or pencils
• Scrap paper
• A glossary from a nautical reference book like Chapman’s Piloting & Seamanship or The American Practical Navigator ‘Bowditch’.  You can download ‘Bowditch’ for free here . There are also some fun lists of nautical terms online that you could use.

How it works: 

• Each turn, one player is the chooser. The chooser browses the nautical glossary and selects an obscure word (e.g. “blather”) , then announces it.
• The chooser writes the definition on a scrap of paper (e.g. “Blather – Very wet mud of such nature that a weight will rapidly sink into it.”). All other players write down their own bogus definitions for the word on scraps of paper and hand them to the chooser.
• The chooser reads out all of the bogus definitions along with the true definition. The other players guess which definition is the correct one.
• Points: A player gets a point if they guess the correct definition, and a point for every player who guessed their bogus definition. The chooser only gets a point if nobody guesses the correct definition.
• The position of chooser rotates one seat clockwise every turn. Once everyone has been chooser a round is complete.

2. SETTLERS OF CATAN: SEAFARERS , EXPLORERS & PIRATES

Age: 12+, 3-4 players, Time: 90-120 minutes

What it is :

How it works:

The wildly popular, Settlers of Catan has sold more than 18 million copies worldwide since its initial release in 1995.There are two nautical extensions to choose from . In the Seafarers expansion you build ships and shipping routes along the sea and connect islands where you may build settlements. In the Explorers & Pirates extension you set out for uncharted areas where you must maneuver around dangerous pirate lairs.

3. SALTY SPEED SCRABBLE

Age: 12+, 2-6 players, Time 10-60 minutes

Speed scrabble with a nautical twist: each player must have a nautical word in their Scrabble grid. This fast paced game is one of the best games to play on a boat because it takes up so little space.

• The tiles from a Scrabble set (you do not need the board)
• Players sit in a circle with all of the Scrabble tiles face-down in the center of the circle.
• Each player chooses seven tiles.  The game starts on the word “go” and everyone turns over their pieces.
• Each player builds their own individual Scrabble grid and spells as many words as quickly as they can (all words must be interconnected).
• Once a player has used up all of their tiles, they shout “two more” . Everyone grabs another two tiles from the pile . This is repeated until all of the tiles are used up.
• The first person to use up all of their tiles is the winner. The nautical twist: a player can only win if they have at least one nautical word (e.g. “boat” or “mast”) in their Scrabble grid. 

4. NAUTICAL TRIVIA

Age: 12+, 2-6 players, Time 40-80 minutes

Boat games don’t get much better than trivial pursuit. Test your nautical knowledge on topics like navigation, seamanship, visual signals, and nautical terminology. 

What you need: 

• The Nautical Trivia Game
• OR, write your own questions
• Divide the group into two teams.
• The person with the most sea miles picks the first card and reads the question to the other team.
• If the team answers correctly they get a point, if not they get no points.
• The team with the most points at the end of the deck wins.

5. BATTLESHIP GAME

Age: 7+ , 2 players, Time: 20-40 minutes

High stakes on the high seas! A two-player battleship themed game where you try to guess the location of your opponent’s warships and sink them. There is a paper and pencil version of this game that dates back to World War I but if you grew up in the ’90s then you’ll probably be familiar with the plastic board game marketed by Hasbro.

In the Hasbro version of this classic boat game, players use portable battle stations to seek and destroy each other’s battle ships. To play the original paper and pencil version:

• Each player starts with two 10 x 10 grids
• An aircraft carrier – 5 squares long
• A battleship – 4 squares long
• A submarine – 3 squares long
• A destroyer – 3 squares long
• A patrol boat – 2 squares long
• The second grid (which is blank at the beginning of the game) represents the opponent’s battlefield .
• One player will call out a square by referencing its row and column (e.g. B7), thereby firing a missile at the square. The opposing player must call “hit” if any part of one of their ships is positioned on this square.  They mark the “hit” by placing an “x” on the B7 square in their own battlefield. The attacker will also place an “X” on their blank grid to record the hit.
• The attacking player continues to fire missiles (guess) until they miss . When a player “misses”, the turn passes to the other player.
• The first person to destroy all of the opponent’s ship by hitting each square they occupy, is the winner of the game.

6. CRIBBAGE – A PIRATE’S PURSUIT

Age: 7+ , 2-4 players, Time: 30-60 minutes

Cribbage is an English card game that dates back to the 17th century and has long been a popular game on boats. Cribbage boards have been found in the wrecks of pirate ships and today cribbage is the “official” game of the American submarine service.  

• A deck of playing cards

7. HELMSMAN’S HEADS UP

Age: 6+ , 4-8 players, Time: 30-60 minutes

Guess the word on the card on your forehead from your friends’ clues before the timer runs out! This is a great game for a boat party.

• “Heads Up” Android or IOS app
• OR, a pen and paper

The Heads Up app works displaying a word when you hold your phone or tablet to your forehead . Your have to guess what the word says based on the clues that the other players give you. The app comes preloaded with 40+ themed decks on topics like celebrities, movies, and animals but you can build your own custom decks. Simply add a bunch of nautical words (e.g. “starfish”, “pirate”, “baggywinkle”) and let the fun begin. One of the cool features of the app is that it can record hilarious videos of the game while you’re playing.

You can of course play a low-tech version of this game by writing the terms down on paper cards and having players draw from a pile and hold them to their head.

A turn starts with a player rolling all five dice. The player may then set aside any number of dice, rerolling the others, or he may stop rolling and proceed to scoring. It is legal for a player to reroll all five dice. It is also legal to reroll dice previously set aside.

On each turn, a player has a maximum of three rolls. After a third roll, the player must stop rolling and proceed to scoring.

Each player will have 12 turns during the game. After each turn, the player must enter a score in one of the rows on the score sheet.

Example: Ana rolls a 1-2-2-4-6. For her second roll, she decides to keep the 2s and reroll the other three dice. She rolls 4-4-6, so she now has 2-2-4-4-6. She has already scored a Full House, so for her third roll, she decides to keep the 4s and reroll the other three dice. She rolls 1-4-4 and now has 1-4-4-4-4. She decides to score for Four of a Kind.

It is likely that a player will make a roll that does not qualify to earn points in any of the remaining categories. In this case, the player must mark a "0" in one of the available categories.

Yacht Scoring and Values

• Yacht: 50 points. (It does not matter what numbers are on the dice.)
• Large Straight: 30 points.
• Small Straight: 30 points.
• Four of a Kind: Up to 30 points. (Add the point values on all five dice, so 4-4-4-4-1 would score 17 points. It is legal to use five of a kind for this category, so 6-6-6-6-6 would score 30 points.)
• Full House: Up to 28 points. (Add the point values on all five dice, so 3-3-3-6-6 would score 21 points. To earn points for a full house, the three of a kind must be different than the pair.)
• Player's Choice: Up to 30 points. (This serves as a "wild card." Simply add the point values on all five dice.)
• Sixes: Up to 30 points. (Add the point values of all sixes rolled.)
• Fives: Up to 25 points. (Add the point values of all fives rolled.)
• Fours: Up to 20 points. (Add the point values of all fours rolled.)
• Threes: Up to 15 points. (Add the point values of all threes rolled.)
• Twos: Up to 10 points. (Add the point values of all twos rolled.)
• Ones: Up to 5 points. (Add the point values of all ones rolled.)

Winning Yacht

After every player has scored in each category, the players each total their scores. The player with the highest score wins.

Jump Ship Plays Like a Mix of Sea of Thieves, Left 4 Dead, and FTL

Ten developers, including founders of hazelight and mojang, are cooking up something unique..

Every once in a while, my job affords me the wonderful opportunity to go into a game demo completely blind and come out completely enlightened. All I knew about Jump Ship before I met with three of its ten-person Swedish development team – including Daniel Kaplan, who was employee #1 at Mojang, and Filip Coulianos, a cofounder at Hazelight – was that it was codenamed Hyperspace and that it would be “a four-player co-op adventure where you and three of your friends get to live the ultimate space fantasy.” It started as a tech demo but everyone loved it so now it’s being made into a full game. I was fortunate enough to play a 30-minute session with Kaplan, Coulianos, and another member of Keepsake Games, and I was blown away.

The headline you clicked on to get into this article is not hyperbole: by Keepsake’s own definition – and one that I’d co-sign after playing the game for myself – Jump Ship is a clear mix of Sea of Thieves , Left 4 Dead , and FTL: Faster Than Light . The Sea of Thieves piece comes from the fact that you and your three teammates all work together to fly, upgrade, customize, and maintain a single spaceship. One of you flies it, while the others can wander around inside of it or even on the outside of it if you pass through an airlock and then use your magnetized boots to stomp around the hull, manning, fixing, or upgrading the ship’s cannons. That in and of itself is fun.

And even if Jump Ship was just “Sea of Thieves in Space,” where you and your crew cooperated in ship-to-ship battles, it’d still probably be pretty cool. But you’ll also land your ship, use your Jet Drive to awesomely fly through the air like Superman away from or towards your ship, go into instanced combat areas, and battle AI enemies – Jump Ship is a purely PvE game, marking one major difference from Sea of Thieves – in encounters that can get pretty tough, thus necessitating cooperation with your pals. Add in that an AI “director,” to use Valve’s term, dynamically populates these encounters, and you can see where the Left 4 Dead ingredient in Jump Ship’s recipe comes from. I had a fantastic time blasting bots with the Keepsake developers.

Finally, FTL. On board your ship, you’ll manage power conduits and other ship functions in an FTL-esque minigame (which, sadly, I don’t have footage of). All of it combines into a moment-to-moment that’s never dull and constantly evolving. Just when you get bored of manning the ship (assuming you’re not the pilot, which is super fun by the way), it’s time to land and go into full first-person shooter mode. And when you’ve got your loot reward and are escaping and being blasted at as your ship departs, you’re scrambling to make necessary repairs to your ship, like a Star Trek crew.

You can choose any number of mission types from your ship map, from smaller, loot-lite payoffs that won’t take too long to longer, multi-part episodes that have bigger rewards. Keepsake promises a meta game that will enable various forms of permanent character and ship progression, but naturally I didn’t have a chance to see those in my short hands-on session. Still, I’ve seen enough to be thoroughly convinced. Jump Ship is going to take us through crazy space battles, dogfights in the skies of planets, intense on-foot missions on the ground, and more – all while working together with three friends in ways that feel fun and useful without being frustrating.

Kaplan and Coulianos told me it’s going to ship simultaneously on PC and Xbox whenever it’s finally ready, and I can’t wait.
