Sandringham Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We'd walked miles along the promenade on a hot sunny Sunday but had discovered few options for lunch. I'd usually avoid anything in such a prime location overlooking the marina on the basis that the food wouldn't need to be any good but we had... a really excellent lunch which was also great value. We chose three different salads to share, all of which were excellent, as was the Barossa rosé. A great place for lunch - especially if you book one of the tables on the terrace. More

Went here for my mother's 91st birthday lunch and had a wonderful experience. Food was delicious and the staff were very attentive. They even brought out a little cake with a candle on it for my mum as we sang Happy birthday. Would recommend to... everyone. More

Good location overlooking water, meals were quite nice but not anything special, would recommend to go there for a nice meal with a view

A group of 16 of us and our friends attended the Yacht Club for lunch on Sunday. I was very dissapointed with my food which was scotch fillet. It was almost like it had been cooked in a microwave. It had not been seared properly... was tough and very gristly. I had left most of it and asked could I take it home for my dog; my request was denied. The chips were good and so were the serving staff. More

Sandringham Yatch Club on Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne offers fine dining with a great view of the bay, surrounded by an assortment of water craft. The clinking of lanyards on masts adds to the atmosphere of dining right on the beach. Dining here has been... variable, but they've got their act together at last, with attentive service, great meals and an accompanying nautical atmosphere. It's a great venue for a meal after a drive along Beach Rd to Frankston. More

Great food and view great place to for a good meal We had the seafood platter, a great mix of hot and cold Highly recommend

The staff make this place along with the seating being spaced and not eating on top of each other. Great menu, great wines and would definitely recommend for a special occasion yet the prices are very reasonable.

Wow, what a lovely venue for a wedding - the surrounds were beautiful and it was so lovely to look out over the water. The food was fabulous - a most enjoyable evening had by all.

We visited this place a few times and one of the chicken salads was very average. The this chicken salad was made using manufactured chicken and one of the staff members Rebecca was very dismissive and unhelpful. There were also people smoking cigars on the... deck which really ruined the lovely atmosphere. Overall the experience was ok but we won't be heading back here in a hurry! More

Great views of the bay and good service are the main redeeming features. There were 6 of us eating and we had wine and just a main course and the bill without tips came to $360 or $60 per head - just not value for... money at all. Food was ok (fresh fish), not great so we felt a bit ripped off. More

The restaurant is situated in the heart of the Sandringham Yacht Club. One of the largest marina in Melbourne. Most table looks out over the marina. Beyond this sea of masts sits the Port Phillip bay, and in the evening the view was amazing as the... sunsets over the bay. Free parking at the club was available, The restaurant offered 3 course meal at a set price for our guests. The food variety offered was excellent, the vegetarian guests were also catered for. Great location and romantic setting, the outdoor setting would me amazing in summer. Definitely going back, professional waiting staff. More

Had a table for eight, for a family celebration. The Maitre d' was very welcoming, and although Whiskey Sour was not on the cocktail list, he said 'of course' when I asked if he could make one. And it was very, very good, one of... the best I have had, complete with egg white on top. The food was very good, and the wait staff friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, even to the point of telling us in advance (when they realised there were two kids under 7) that whilst they didn't have a kids' menu as such, they could certainly do kids' serves of 4 or 5 different offerings, which was great. I had the steak, which was melt-in-the-mouth beautiful, and cooked exactly as I asked (medium rare), although it did come to the table a little cool (I passed that on to the chef). But it was so good in flavour and texture, that I was able to overlook that. [If the plate had been warmed, it may have made a difference.] The ambience and setting was exceptional, much better than in the photos on their website. Plus the background music was exactly that, not at all intrusive, but a pleasant mix of mellow and slow. Will we go back? Most definitely. More

All eating areas at the yacht club are very good although a bit pricey. The members restaurant has the views outside but the general public restaurant does have an outside eating area during the summer with views.

This dinner was the best dining experience I can recall. We Booked Olympic room for 20 friends . Drinks were served on arrival with nibbles. Excellent service from Lewis our dedicated waiter. The menu was fine with good variety and was served with good timing.... The entree was exceptional and everyone was raving about its excellence. The main followed and again we were full of praise at the presentation and quality. We enjoyed the best of service and the night was fantastic and one we will remember for some time. The staff also need to be congratulated for their warm and friendly manner which made the night perfect. Alan E More

Visited the Club for my birthday with my partner, ordered the full selection and the entire meal was a delight. Aside from the fact that some of the younger staff were not familiar with every dish (hardly surprising), this was soon rectified by a more... senior member of staff. The Chef visited our table during one course which was a nice touch. I was only sorry we did not do it a week or so earlier before "winter time" and we could have seen the lovely sunset. As it was the view as dusk settled was beautiful as the lights came up around the bay. More

Not many marinas can boast a 100-year-old submarine, but this one does

A submarine wreck.

By the time Australia gets the first of its next fleet of submarines, J-7 will be 113 years old, and won't have sailed anywhere in a century.

J-7 may be a familiar sight to dozens of sailors who stride past her every day at Sandringham Yacht Club, but most Melburnians won't even know she's there.

Once one of the fastest submarines in the world, the only place she's going these days is deeper into the mud.

"She was quite remarkable," the Sandringham Yacht Club's historian Graeme Disney said.

"She had a range of 5,000 miles. That's extraordinary for First World War times."

So how did this once cutting-edge submarine built for the British Navy end up rusting away next to fancy yachts and speed boats in a marina in Melbourne? Because everything new eventually becomes obsolete, and then you have to either throw it away or find some other use for it.

In J-7's case, it was a bit of both.

The fastest thing under the water

A submarine under construction.

In the early days of World War I, Britain heard rumours that the Germans were building a fleet of U-boats capable of speeds much greater than any British submarine.

The rumours turned out to be false, but the British built a new class of submarines anyway.

The J-class submarines were capable of speeds of up to 19 knots at the surface, making them the fastest submarine in the world at the time.

They didn't see a lot of action during the war, but did manage to sink a U-boat and damage a couple of warships.

One of the subs, J-6, was accidentally sunk by a British ship after the captain mistook the J on the vessel's conning tower for a U and assumed it was a German submarine.

At the end of the war, Britain gave the six remaining J-class submarines to Australia as a gift.

Australia hadn't had much luck with submarines to that point, losing the only two it had during World War I within a year of their construction.

If the Australian government thought they were getting a great deal, they must've been remarkably disappointed when the J-class fleet limped into Australian waters in July 1919.

Never look a gift sub in the mouth

After a three-month voyage, during which several of the submarines broke down, they were found to be almost unusable.

One of the subs was unable to dive, which was something of an issue for a vessel that was supposed to spend much of its time underwater.

A submarine underneath an airship.

After an expensive refit, the submarines were put into service, with four of them based at Osborne House in Geelong, and two in Sydney.

The six submarines lasted just a few years in the Royal Australian Navy, with big cuts to defence spending sealing their fate in 1922.

The subs were expensive to run and the general feeling in the government was that the country didn't really need them. The enemy was defeated, who were they protecting us from? Dolphins?

A submarine.

The decision to sell the submarines for scrap did not go down well with everyone. The former district naval officer for Victoria, Captain J.T. Richardson, was very cranky indeed.

"To scrap the six J-class submarines would be criminal," he said in February 1923.

But, the decision was made and the subs were put up for sale, with two conditions: that whoever bought them would remove them within 42 days of purchase, and would destroy them within 18 months of purchase.

A 3D image of a submarine wreck.

The Melbourne Salvage Company bought four of them, which were used for bombing practice outside Port Phillip Heads by Australian aircraft in 1926.

The pilots must've needed the practice as it was reported in The Argus that no direct hits were made, but no bomb landed "more than about 200 feet away".

The wrecks of those four submarines are popular dive sites. Another of the J-class submarines lies in about 6 metres of water at Swan Island, near Queenscliff.

J-7 finds a permanent home at Sandringham

A submarine wreck at a marina.

In the mid-1920s, Sandringham Yacht Club had hoped to buy HMAS Cerberus, which had been the depot ship for the six J-class submarines, and sink it as a breakwater.

They missed out, but instead bought the J-7 which was sunk in 1930.

Years later a stone breakwater was built, once again rendering the J-7 obsolete when all it was required to do was sit in the water and stop waves from crashing.

When the club's marina was built, it was considered too expensive to remove the sub and, anyhow, many of the members were quite attached to it.

"It's our sub," Graeme Disney said.

A submarine wreck at a marina.

Graeme used to snorkle around the J-7 when he was a teenager 65 years ago, and remembers when it was in a lot better shape than it is now.

"If we dived at the side and scraped off the barnacles and seaweed you were presented with pristine grey painted steel," he said.

The pristine paint is long gone, and J-7 is now very much looking her age, peeling and crumbling slowly but surely into the bay next to millions of dollars' worth of luxury pleasure boats.

Graeme still sees people new to the marina do a double-take when they see the rusting ribs protruding from the water for the first time.

"So many people contacted me to say they had no idea Sandringham had a submarine," he said.

"Most people know about the Cerberus in Half Moon Bay but they don't know about the sub because as you can see it's buried in the midst of the marina."

A bird on a submarine wreck.

There's been a long-running but largely unsuccessful campaign to get funding to maintain the wreck of HMAS Cerberus, but there's not much hope of that kind of effort for the J-7.

"J-7 is nowhere near as significant as Cerberus, Cerberus is the last example in the world of a breastwork monitor, if we can't get funding for that the hope of getting funding for J-7 is less than nothing," Graeme said.

"My guess is it will just be allowed to rust away."

Maintenance and Enhancements for the Sandringham Yacht Club Marina

Richard Hewett

Sandringham Yacht Club

May 19, 2022

sandringham yacht club mother's day

In 2022 the Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) Marina celebrated its 29 th birthday, and she continues to underpin the overall performance of the Club. Here is an update on the key elements related to this wonderful floating asset that houses upwards of 360 vessels.

SYC have 360 marina berths – 250 of which are currently in the rental pool, and 110 licensed to Members. In August 2023, 75 pens will come off their long-term licences and will enter the rental pool. This is a key moment for the Club, as at that point, 90% of marina berths will be in the rental pool.

The performance of SYC is inextricably linked to the occupancy of the marina, including the occupancy ratio of yachts to powerboats. Equally important is how active SYC marina tenants are in Club life. Currently, overall occupancy is maximized at 100%, with a ratio of 70% yachts to 30% power boats. Though occupancy is high, the Club always strives to find room for incoming boats that are keen to participate in core on-water activities. Moving forward as SYC offers a wide range of events, the Club will encourage all tenants to participate to some degree in club activities as participation is the key to a vibrant club.

Maintenance is another key area of focus for the marina, and SYC continue to invest heavily in this regard. In September 2021 the refurbishment of row B West concluded, marking the completion of a major phase of enhancements. The walkway, as well as all 26 pontoons on that arm, received new timbers, cleats, thru rods, knee brackets and more. The annual program thereafter will see a similar scope of work on row C West, and enhancements to the finger pontoons on D East in mid-2022, all finger pontoons to be addressed on E and F rows in mid-2023, and the work completed in mid-2024 with A West and its pontoons.

Other maintenance works include various pontoon replacements on D West. The pedestal replacement program has continued to advance and recent improvements to the marina entrance (new sliding doors, fuel kiosk, fuel jetty handrails, re-treaded on gangways) have been enhanced with the Ken King Centre refurbishment. In addition to the marina itself, staged maintenance works continue on the wavescreen. SYC also intend on completing a service pedestal upgrade, a changeover to LED lights and upgrades to all fire hose reels by mid-2024.

Other important related work includes the refurbishment to the breakwater to the west.

Seabed depths are a further consideration, and in early 2021 a hydrographic survey was completed. The results of the survey are viewable on the SYC website, as is the suggested pathway for those exiting/entering the marina from the western side. SYC are in talks with Parks Victoria about the siltation build-up in this vicinity as well as the non-operational navigational marker.

The SYC marina continues to be the Club’s crown jewel. The Club expresses deep gratitude to those who had the vision to see the marina’s development come to fruition in the early 1990s.

We wanted to take the chance to say a HUGE thank you for our wedding!! We just cannot thank you, and the team at Sandringham for being so accommodating. You really made the planning and the lead up so easy and so simple. Your communication was incredible, and your organisation skills out of this world. We also cannot explain how MANY comments we got from our guests about how amazing and friendly the staff were on the night and how great the food was. To hear that come from our family and friends just confirmed our decision to get married at SYC was a bloody good one!

– Brooke & Josh –

I wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help in the wedding planning process and on the day. You made everything so easy – from the initial booking, to how to run the day. It made the whole process so simple for me. Please also pass on my thanks to the staff on that evening. All the wait staff were so fast in their service and ran the night so smoothly. It exceeded our expectations and we couldn’t have asked for anything more! We have received many compliments from guests about the exceptional quality of the food.

– Nicole –

On behalf of Lachlan and myself, I just want to send the deepest thank you to yourself and your team for our wedding on Sunday. It was a pleasure dealing with you and your team and as mentioned the planning was just smooth!
