The windrider 17 trimaran, a nearly perfect sailboat.

The most versatile sailboat in the WindRider Trimaran clan, the WindRider 17 has features to please just about everybody.  With the affordability of this boat we are bringing the joy and pleasure of sailing high-quality boats to as many people as possible.  We bring outstanding quality for the price.

The boat is easy to sail and operate.  Anyone will have confidence with stability and control.  The boats controls are very intuitive.  You steer left by pushing your left foot and steer right by pushing your right foot from the comfortable cockpit.  Steering with your feet leaves your hands free to operate the sails. All controls are easily accessed and within close proximity of the cockpit no twisting or bending required.  The boat is very quick, all while staying extremely dry.

The mast is lightweight and rotates improving performance of the full battened mainsail, giving way to great visibility.   The boat is constructed of rotomolded polyethelene which is very durable and less maintenance than fiberglass. The 17 is so easy to trailer it slides on rails to be put on and off the trailer and can be towed behind most vehicles.  The launch and retrieval time of the boat for a solo sailor is about 30 minutes and 10 minutes for 2 or more sailors.

This boat offers a fine combination of excellent sailing performance with a comfortable face forward cockpit seating. The sailing capacity is quite large with up to 6 adults.  In addition to the main cockpit there is a larger forward cockpit for your passenger and the cushioned seat reverses to face the captain.  The optional stiff backed net seats, which are very comfortable and soft, will allow the boat to easily carry 4 adults and 2 kids.  The nets are also perfect for lounging and relaxing.

Social or family sailors can spend the day beach-sailing with the spouse, the kids, and their friends. The single-line roller-furling jib makes it easy to tune the ride, offering an easy and stable ride for the youngsters or fast and wet for the teens. The 17′s shallow draft makes it a natural for swapping rides off the beach, or throw down an anchor and furl the sails to create a huge swim platform with lots of places to grab on and rest. The trimaran design makes it nearly impossible to capsize, while giving the ability to go fast.

The WindRider17 is a great day sailer that can be used for extended trips. Camp-cruisers can pack enough gear for week-long adventures into the 17′s covered, dry center cockpit, or use drybags and pack it on the trampolines and take a passenger as well.

Performance sailors can add the optional Turbo Reacher kit for an adrenaline rush that'll make the jet-skiers envious.

This is what's included in one sleek, easily-managed trimaran package:

  • Fully-battened main sail on a rotating mast
  • Roller-furling jib for total control
  • Telescoping hull beams for easy setup and trailering
  • Trampolines between the hull beams for relaxing or extra passengers
  • Foot-pedal steering for single-handed versatility
  • Dual cockpit covers
  • Built-in bilge pump

This boat is great for the experienced and first time sailors alike.  Take this boat for a fun family day trip or be adventurous and take it out for several days.  It is quick, easy to launch, sail, and retrieve.  It is comfortable, safe, and affordable.  This boat is a vision of beauty and function which will make you fall in love.  We have boats stationed all over the country making them easy to test sail and look at.  Don't Wait!  Try one out Today!!

One thing leads to another, and while on a camping trip to Florida, I was showing some friends pictures of the Drifter 12, and describing what it was like. They were interested but wanted one designed for two people. I took the basic design, and stretched to 15'. I went home, and spent the next couple of months building the Drifter 15. It is just like the Drifter 12, but is designed for one or two persons. I shipped the boat to Florida in a crate, and fortunately it arrived intact. Next time I'll build a stronger crate! The amas on this design also fit in the main hull. It is a fun boat to sail, and faster than the smaller model, with a taller mast. These are not designed as high performance boats, but sail well because they are so easily driven with a simple rig. Basically the same concept as the Fulmar 19, which has always been a favorite of mine. This would be a great boat for camp cruising for one person. You could carry plenty of camping gear without the weight of the second person.

The latest boat in the series is the Drifter 14, which I build earlier this summer for my own use. It is more high performance than the others, with bigger amas to give it more sail carrying power. The amas no long fit into the main hull, but everything fits very nicely onto a custom rack on my Toyota pickup. It's quite a fast boat, considering the simple rig I am using. The center of effort of the rig is low, so there is no problem with pitchpoling, and going downwind in stronger winds is really fun. I made up a special masthead fitting so I could put on stays, out of 1/8" spectra, and still allow the mast to rotate to furl the sail. The stays keep the mast from bending, which gives you better sail shape. I can add a small roller furling jib, which really adds to the performance. All of these boats are steered with rudder pedals; it's nice always having your hands free. You can eat lunch while you are cruising along. This design is mostly meant for one person, but I can take my wife along for a ride. She wants to take it out by herself next time, after sailing the smaller version.

There are plans available Here for four different versions of the Drifter trimarans. There is the Drifter 12 , the Drifter 12L , which has longer amas, and a taller mast, the Drifter 14 , and the Drifter 16 , which is an enlarged version of the 14, for two people.

My wife did a couple of nice videos of the boats:

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

As with the CORTEZ 16, this boat has it origins with an earlier design called the SUN DOWNER 16, though deck, coachroof, and keel, were significantly changed. Thanks to Tony Davis for providing updated information.

Going Places With Drifter Trimarans

by Small Tri Guy | Sep 23, 2010 | Self-built Small Trimarans , Small Tri Info - All , Small Trimaran Videos | 10 comments

The “Drifter Trimarans” are a new design series that come to us from sailor and small tri enthusiast Mark Gumprecht. Mark has designed and built smaller outriggers in the past, including unique catamarans. Some of his work is featured in articles such as this at Duckworks Magazine .

What began as a project to help somebody who wanted to explore some local rivers and bays (without having to paddle all the time) led Mark to ultimately design 4 versions of a new tri he named “Drifter.” He shares the story (along with some great photos) with us below.

— Many thanks for sharing this with us Mark!

………………

Drifter Trimarans by Mark Gumprecht

The Drifter trimarans are sort of a modern version of the outrigger canoe, being designed to be paddled or sailed. There are some boats out there like this, mostly small tris that use kayaks for the main hull. This works fine, but kayaks have many limitations for this use.

It all started when a retired college professor I know wanted a boat to explore the local rivers and bays where we live, but didn’t really know what kind of boat would be best for his purpose. He thought of getting a canoe, but he liked to sail, and wasn’t that excited about paddling everywhere.

I told him I thought I could design a boat that would work for him. I was picturing a small tri that could be paddled or sailed with a simple rig, very stable, with a comfortable seat, light weight, and easy to launch off of a beach. It would come apart with a few bolts, and be cartoppable. I did some drawings, and he liked the concept, and over the next few months, I built him the first “Drifter 12.”

One of 4 Drifter Trimaran Models

It is a simple flat bottom design, built out of 1/8″ luan plywood, with a free standing windsurfer mast, and a roll up sail. It has a lee board, and a kick-up rudder. The whole boat would come apart in 15 minutes and go on top of his car. The amas also fit into the main hull, another way to transport it, and great for shipping.

Paddling a Drifter Trimaran

Drifter Trimaran Under Sail

The boat probably weighs about 100 lb. It is easy to paddle, and really fun, and easy to sail. It’s great for inexperienced sailors, because you launch and land with the sail rolled up, and set sail once you are out on the water.

It’s a very enjoyable way to get out on the water and explore protected waters. The owner has been having a great time with it, and even takes his wife along, even though it was really designed for one person. It’s a little overloaded, but they do fine, because the boat is so stable.

One thing leads to another, and while on a camping trip to Florida, I was showing some friends pictures of the Drifter 12, and describing what it was like. They were interested but wanted one designed for two people. I took the basic design, and stretched to 15′. I went home, and spent the next couple of months building the Drifter 15.

Another Drifter Trimaran Model

It is just like the Drifter 12, but is designed for one or two persons. I shipped the boat to Florida in a crate, and fortunately it arrived intact. (Next time I’ll build a stronger crate!)

The next boat I built was a 9′ version made to go on the back of my camper. I wanted to take a boat with me on our travels, but didn’t want to tow a trailer. So I made a nesting trimaran.

The main hull comes apart, and the back half fits into the front half. The amas also come apart, and fit into the main hull, and the boat with fit on a platform that attaches to the trailer hitch.

It takes maybe 20 minutes to put together anywhere we are camping. It sails well, or it can be used without the rig to paddle around. I got some pictures of my wife sailing it the other day. She was having a great time.

The latest boat in the series is the Drifter 14, which I built earlier this summer for my own use. It is more high performance than the others, with bigger amas to give it more sail carrying power. The amas no longer fit into the main hull, but everything fits very nicely onto a custom rack on my Toyota pickup.

It’s quite a fast boat, considering the simple rig I am using. The center of effort of the rig is very low, so there is no problem with pitchpoling. And going downwind in stronger winds is really fun.

I made up a special masthead fitting so I could put on stays, out of 1/8″ spectra, and still allow the mast to rotate to furl the sail. The stays keep the mast from bending, which gives you better sail shape. I can add a small roller furling jib, which really adds to the performance.

All of these boats are steered with rudder pedals; it’s nice always having your hands free. You can eat lunch while you are cruising along. This design is mostly meant for one person, but I can take my wife along for a ride. She wants to take it out by herself next time, after sailing the smaller version.

Very pretty boats; well proportioned and simple without a lot of extraneous design elements…somewhat reminiscent of the early hard chine Cross tris in that respect, which is one of the highest compliments a tri designer can get, in my book..

My only negative reaction is that were I to have a small tri like this, I personally would find the race car style seating arrangement of these and similar small tris to be kind of restrictive and something of an impedance to exploiting the benefits of a trimaran layout over similar sized monohulls.

I love canoes and kayaks and similar easily driven hulls, but don’t like the fact that they tip so easily- adding stabilizing hulls is an obvious solution, but if you are still essentially stuck sitting in one position or otherwise can’t move around much outside of a very narrow centerline, that doesn’t seem like as big an improvement as it could be.

You might not ever be able to lounge around on one of these like you can larger tris and still stay in sailing trim, but from a comfort and safety standpoint, being able to move human ballast around and stretch out a bit seems like too good a deal to pass on, especially on a boat where sheer performance isn’t the main goal.

It may be nice having your hands free but in extreme sailing situations on small boats, in my experience the reality is that your hands will be occupied hanging on or climbing up a steadily pitching deck in a last ditch effort to avoid capsize or pitchpoling, and your feet will be helping you get somewhere safer, either to a weather deck or hull, or out of the way of a catastrophic rigging/spar failure or something (another fast boat bearing down on you?).

That isn’t to say that nobody else should like the layout and it certainly isn’t a deal breaker here- they are gorgeous boats and no doubt would perform well with a more traditional steering/seating arrangement…whether they performed better or worse would mostly be a matter of what the users priorities were, but I’d be willing to bet that even the 12 footer would be quite a go-er even with two people in it if they were to sail it like a standard dinghy of that size, using body weight and leverage to actively trim the boat out.

Drifter no You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YrPv2FPAA4 I like Drifter!!!

Ian, Thanks for your comments, and comparison to Norm Cross designs. Norm Cross was a friend of mine when I lived in San Diego, and I used to go sailing with him while I was build my Cross 40 RC, which is the one pictured on the Cross website. What a great boat! What you say about being able to move around is true, and I have had the same thought myself on other designs I have seen. I have a 12′ tri with a high performance rig, that is just like you describe. It’s a fun boat, but more work to sail, and I have had my new 14′ model going just as fast, but much easier to sail. In the article, I said these boat were designed for a purpose. They meant to be lightweight, easy to sail, easy get into, for older or inexperienced sailors. They do this very well, and are a pleasure to sail. When you put seats on either side, you lose the ability to paddle, and it’s harder to get into. If I design the boat to be sailed harder, and in rougher conditions, it is going to have to be built heavier, and I don’t want a heavier boat. I don’t want to have to launch the boat off a trailer, at a launching ramp. Every boat is a compromise depending what your priorities are, but these boat are a big improvement over most of the small boats out there. I designed the new 14′ model to be sailed in many different modes, depending on the conditions. One is to have seats on each side that slide out of the way, so I can still paddle. This will allow me to move my weight around, and I’m sure the boat will be faster. I will have a removable tiller when I am using the seats. The seats in this boat will be big enough to sleep on, so I’m going to make a tent for the cockpit, so I can camp on the boat. Adding stays to the windsurfer mast give you better sail shape, and I put a small roller furling jib on, with really improves the performance. But there is a beauty in simplicity on those days when you are lazy, it’s late fall, and getting cold, and you just use the basic rig, get cozy under the cockpit cover, and enjoy a beautiful day out on the water.

Hi Mark – I’ve been making cats and tris in my garage for a few years, and I just stumbled on your Drifter designs. Wish I’d started there! You’re right — there’s beauty in simplicity. One sail is a lot less hassle than two, and if it’s big enough, you’ll fly anyway! Can you please tell me more about your mast rig — like height, sail size, and where you get your sails made? I’m planning a 16 footer, with my wife as occasional passenger. Do you sell any plans that would meet those specs? Thanks for your excellent work – “Dr. Frank”

Hi Dr. Frank, Thanks your interest in my designs. My 14′ model use a 16′ windsurfer mast, and has about 60 sq. ft. of sail. I’ve been making my own sails lately, but any sailmaker should could make you a sail. I just finished drawing the plans for the 15′ model, modified to be slightly longer, with bigger amas, similar to the 14. It’s a great boat for for one, or two people. It has a 17′ mast with 68 sq. ft. of sail, or you can use a 16′ mast if you want to save money. You can e-mail me if you are interested in plans. Mark

I sometimes sail off the beach at Galveston. How will the Drifter 16 do in 2′ surf?

Do you know if the Drifter 17 trimaran plans are available?

I still don’t see any plan for a 17-footer at Duckworks.com

Great little boat – any plans for folding amas?
