Yellowdrama III 1976::

From the Company's beginnings in 1969 the Cougar name has been synonymous with cutting edge technology with both mono and multihull powerboat designs for commercial, military, racing and leisure purposes. For 50 years our constant striving to make technical advantages in the development of high strength and lightweight structures to maximise performance on the water has forged an enviable reputation that is recognised throughout the maritime world.

Originally founded by Clive Curtis, James Beard & Chris Hodges the company today is run by and continues its winning ways through Clive's son, multiple World Champion Steve Curtis and the Cougar team.

A long line of high performance craft with impeccable sea keeping have been designed and produced, from boats thoroughly tested and proven on race circuits around the world. The first catamaran to win an international offshore powerboat race was a Cougar and this revolutionary design heralded an era of dominance, which is still today echoed by the Company's involvement with developing Honda's one class race series into the largest one design series in the world and its involvement with the Spirit of Qatar offshore racing team.

Lessons learned and technology researched and developed in racing has been directly used in the design and production of Cougar's entire range of boats, even down to the introductory 6 metre rigid inflatable boat. The Company prides itself on this unrivalled approach and will always seek to strive and refine all processes to the benefit of our clients.

Today Cougar is not a high volume manufacture but it specialises in building custom bespoke boats around the clients requirements

As a former owner and driver of three of these 10' Cougar Cubs with 25XD Mercs back in 1984 - 1986, these boats are very fun to drive. Not too sure of Ron's experience with these, but I had a lot of fun in these as both lake boats and on a course. Of course, I was 14 years old and didn't know any better either. hehe. With a 25 Merc, trimmed out in the #5 tilt pin hole, you can get 43-45mph with a re-pitched aluminum prop to 18". Mercury made an 18" Chopper for the 25 that you can find here or there sometimes on the internet. I lost the part number a couple years ago. If you get one of these Choppers, you are supposed to raise the engine 1" on the transom. Otherwise, leave it flush on the transom. The Chopper will not run any better than a repitched aluminum prop, so save your money and don't look for one. There are also some cleavers out there too, but I never ran one of those. One thing about the #5 tilt pin hole, it will cavitate for days and never get on plane unless you are heading into the wind with serious waves to get it going. Once it planes though, you are trimmed to about the last 12" inches of the stern in the water at top speed. Start out in the #3 hole and work your way up until you get the feel for how to plane it out. Of course, I only weighed about 110lbs. back then. I saw one on the net about 5 - 7 years ago out in Texas where a guy had taken this setup and put nitrous on the 25 Merc. I think it was a 50 shot, but he claimed the boat ran 80mph top speed. Not sure how long that engine will stay together and whether or not I could knowingly put someone in a Cougar Cub IF it really ran that kind of speed. I was never afraid of its attitude at mid 40's, but like others have stated, it wasn't meant for much more than that. Good luck, have fun, and be SAFE. Slide over and lean into the turns to keep it right-side up when turning left. Like a dumbass, I tried to turn one over one time and almost succeeded. Never did though. Maybe Ron just weighed too much. hehe.

They look like a miniature version of an off-shore cat hull race boat (the kind millionares drive). The fact is though, these boats were not really made to be run in high water at all. The tunnel is more about getting a bit of speed from a mild powered outboard of the higher duty portable class (15-25 hp). Most of all, as a racer it was likely a novice type competitor. This would be more of a safe, family fun category of racing that could be a good introduction for practice of rules and sportsmanship. Like anything, it could be rigged and souped up to run fast, but a good idea would be to fix it up real nice and correct with the right intended motor. You see, what you have is a potential collectors item that you could sell later on and find a good deal on ,lets say, a nice classic "C" runabout (center fin) with a good mark 30H merc or YAMATO 102 or 302.

I ran one of these boats around my waterway for a few years. It came with a 20hp. Upgraded carb to 25hp but wasn't much better. Added power trim and the boat was much mlre fun and controlable. Still wouldnt plane without your mate up the front deck. Broke 3 swival brackets on the early type 80's mercs (same as 25xd) from jumping waves. This boat would prefer to cross over boat wake with the bow raised right up and glide on the back of the sponsons. I added trim tabs which helped this boat get on the plane and cushion landings from wave jumps. Boat begun to crack up and stress fractures so I took the deck off and layed up the hull with attention to the steps as blew out and cracked open twice. I added too much weight reinforcing the hull but it was so solid it felt and sounded like a thick glass boat. Never flexed again and could punch through chop without fear. Most speed I got was 45-48mph with a 30hp mercury, 14p powertech prop. The 18p chopper didn't do anything. Boat is definitely not designed for speed, it's a visual hull with steps and all but the design is for looks not performance. After realizing no matter what I did to the boat, jack plate, props, setback, it was never going to get on top those sponsons being far too narrow. I don't think these boats were meant to break free from the water through the tunnel plank, hence the step and extra raised tunnel in the plank. This would make the hull loose compression. Great boat for kids to get started in, or big kids to have fun in but one work of advice, put a foot throttle in it because you need two hands on the wheel and one foot on the throttle at all times to control the thing. I used to take my cub offshore wave jumping. Lol. Thought I was some sort of mini offshore cat boat before realizing it takes a small amount of water to Swamp these little boats. Make sure you have flotation Fun boats to play around with and get very wet in. I had a blast in it for 3 years before wanting something more better designed.

Cougar MK III

Cougar MK III is a 18 ′ 9 ″ / 5.7 m catamaran sailboat designed by Prout and built by Prout & Sons starting in 1962.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Take to the water - anytime!

That's the beauty of owning a Kayacat. It is so easy to just decide to get out on the water any time you like.

With the Puma, you can get on the water fast. The catamaran design makes the craft incredibly stable and perfect for exploring on rivers, canals and around the coast. Great for taking kids out too.

The Cougar has some extra frame parts, plus a mast and sail. Then cleverly utilising the paddle parts, you can rig up a sailing craft in a matter of minutes. When the wind drops. simply drop the sail, attach the mast to your floats, reconnect your paddle pieces and paddle on.

The focus for 2023 is to get the Puma and the Cougar back in to production, but rest assured, exciting new models are on the drawing board for 2024. Design, prototyping and rigorous testing will be underway soon.

Help with cougar cub modifying

Discussion in ' Boat Design ' started by furious cub , Apr 22, 2013 .

Hi guys ive got a cougar cub that im looking to mess with. I know a bunch of you will say dont bother and just get a new boat but my hobby is messing with stuff and trying to make them better. so the boat in question is a cougar cub 10foot, it was powered with a merc 25hp (Stock) but i just picked up a lil force 50hp for nothing and decided im going to chuck it on. But there is a few performance problems that it had already with the 25 which will now be worse with the 50hp. The hole shot on these is terrible, It just wants to mono all day and you pretty much have to stand on the deck so ive played with a few ideas and just wondering if you guys think it will work. DONT LAUGH LOL Reason for this is i like to take the little boat out cause a day on the water in this only cost $30 in fuel and it can ski with the 25 but its not legal as its only a 2 seater. so with these modifications i can make it a 3 seater and maybe improve performance at same time.

or would this work better???

Your hole shot will be pretty dramatic with the 50HP engine. Get the trim angle right and hold on when you advance the throttle. The difference in weight of the engines may become a problem because the transom and aft sections of the boat can support a limited amount of weight. Be sure that your insurance premiums are up to date and then have fun.

furious cub - your Cougar Cub is a nice little tunnel boat. 50hp might be lot's for it, so check out your balance situation, particularly with your planned added passenger/payload. You should be able to make the hull perform well, with proper modifications for the new hp.
jim boat just the man i wanted to see reply to this. Im thinking of also adding some flotation pods to help with hole shot and also supporting the added weight of the motor and thinking to build up the cabin sides an extra couple inches to stop backwash hitting on shutdown. once the transom and deck is redone i plan to flip her over and blueprint the hull bottom and maybe add some choke to the tunnel (opinions)? And messabout good thing the new motor has trim control the static trim was such a killer for performance but i still managed to get a 130kg guy up on a kneeboard.

Jimboat. I mean pods on the back with foam inside them to help me plane out quicker. And i had the wrong name for the (choke) venturi throat i believe is the correct name. Its where the tunnel slightly comes in towards the transom to increase lift. These will both be quick removal mods so if they dont work ill just remove them.

Furious cub: why not add a small set of tabs to the back of the boat that will aid in initial planning and help with your hole shot on popping up a skier. I just started an idea on wanting to build and maybe produce 16-18' mini-cats of the LARGER offshore boats like what cougar did with you cub and a few other companies during the 80's. I love the fact that you have an original cougar cub. I had a Baja skat cat with a 35 Merc and it flew. I know the planning problems on that somebody was hanging on to get the darn thing to plane but once up it was the ****!!! Here's a pic of the boat that I want to upscale to royghly 17' a MHZ Mystic

B2E8EB26-E66A-4AF9-B860-4DC13F963115.jpg

4Fx i could add tabs but i think the pod/extension would be a safer idea. As they will help hold the transom up higher when stationary/on shutdown. Ive also heard that they help hole shot dramatically. They will be angled upwards so once planing they shouldnt touch the water at all. Jim boat yes i mean an extension to each sponson. So i can step on them as its so hard to get on the boat if a skier comes off. Like i said above i will angle them upwards so they wont be in contact while on a plane. As for venturi throat ive decided lifting strakes on the inside of the tunnel would be a better option. And i would love to call but im from Australia. And if i called i can foresee my bill coming in upwards of 200$ cause when im learning i can talk for hours. Ill draw up some designs so u can see what i mean. None of them will be put into place untill after i redo transom to hold the power and a float/plane test so i can get the WL
4Fx. That boat looks sick do u have a pic of the planing surface? After im done with these boats. Cougar cub/stiletto. I will have a shot at designing a boat i just want to learn what works/dosnt on some existing hulls first.

Love those cougar cubs. Back in the mid 80's I worked on a research project for the US Coat Guard trying to find a better way to determine horsepower for outboard boats. (didn't work out well) One of the boats we tested was a cougar cub with a 35 hp merc. That thing was a lot of fun, but at 35 hp and full throttle it was really squirrely. The only guy who could handle it was a professional race boat driver. There is a reason why, in the USA those little thrill craft are limited to the amount of hp they can handle while being run through a specified test course, and 40 hp is the max allowed by law here. There is also a good reason they were called "thrill" craft. Anyway I think 50 hp may be way too much, and way too heavy. A 50 Hp weighs almost 100 pounds more than a 25 so you may have a serious problem supporting the weight, even if you make the boat several feet longer.
My 50hp motor weighs 110lb i have cruised around with 4 people squished in the boat and the boat had no problem supporting the weight. It may be a different story at full speed but there is another guy whos cougar cub does 53mph with a 50hp.
Update. So ive finally come up with a practical way to design the interior and add some flotation. So here it is tell me what you think
  • Advertisement:
Ok so now ive started to get to work after a while of planing. So the last couple of days ive started to gut the interior and remove all floatation foam which was surprisingly quite dry in most areas except on the tunnel. And ive also ripped out my old transom which was a death trap waiting to happen... See pics.
