Top 8 Game of Thrones filming locations to visit by boat

Barrika, northern spain.

Fictional setting:  Currently unknown

True location: Northern Spain

The much anticipated seventh season of Game of Thrones sees its film crew return to Iceland and Northern Ireland, but for the next chapter in the story, it is rumoured that some north-east coastal towns in Spain will also be appearing on our television screens — including Barrika, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and the Port of Bermeo. It is suspected that the incredible Muriola Beach in Barrika will be the landing site for Daenerys and her fleet of Dothraki soldiers.

How to visit: Superyachts can moor at the Maritime Museum at the heart of nearby Bilbao, a port city famed for its museums, contemporary art galleries, rustic restaurants and architecture. Alternatively, it can be arranged for superyachts of any length to berth in the Port of Bilbao's cruise quays or commercial docks. Take a private car to the filming locations, which are approximately an hour's drive away.

Fictional setting: North of the Wall, Wildling territory

True location: Various spots across Iceland was used to portray the icy stretches past the Wall at the border of the Seven Kingdoms. Many scenes were filmed on the Vatnajökull glacier at the heart of the island and at the Thingvellir National Park. Fans will recognise the glacial planes of Höfðabrekka as the 'Frostfang Mountains' from season two as well as Grjótagjá, a spring cave near Lake Mývatn that played host to Jon Snow and Ygritte in season three.

How to visit: Moor up in Reykjavík just outside of the old harbour, which is capable of berthing some of the world's largest yachts —  in fact,126 metre Octopus was been spotted here both in 2010 and 2015. There are a huge number of tours and excursions that can be organised from Reykjavík, so be sure to select your favourite spots to visit in advance.

To visit more northern locations such as the Grjótagjá cave, moor up at Akureyri, where 119 metre motor yacht A was spotted in May 2016.

Game of Thrones filming locations to visit by boat

Fictional setting: Qarth

Located on the south coast of Essos, Qarth is a trading city and is also sometimes known as the “Garden of Bones”.

True location: Trogir

One of many  hidden gems in Croatia , Trogir is a UNESCO World Heritage site with strong Venetian influences, as it was taken over in the 15th century for almost 300 years, though it was founded long before that. In the series it portrays the trading harbour of Qarth, while Split and the Fortress of Klis are nearby and well worth a visit, as they were used for many of the scenes featuring the fictional town of Meereen. There are a number of incredible historical sites in Trogir such as the 13th century Cathedral of St Lawrence, as well as some beautiful eateries at which to enjoy dinner, such as Capo in the old town or Konobo Trs. The latter sports traditional wooden benches, old stone walls and a courtyard with a ceiling of sprawling grapevines and serves delicious seafood dishes.

How to visit: There are a number of beautiful superyacht anchorages in Croatia  — the nearest is just outside the Trogir bay by the island of Drvenik.

Fictional Setting: King’s Landing

The capital of George R. R. Martin’s mythical world of Westoros is a walled city that sits by a sparkling blue ocean, where the current royal family live in the Red Keep — home of the iconic Iron Throne. Not dissimilar to the likes of medieval London, the slums of the poor surround the walls.

True Location: Dubrovnik

The Old City area of Dubrovnik was used for large portions of filming after season one production emigrated to the UNESCO World Heritage site from Mdina in Malta. The Old Town of Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century and features an intricate tapestry of narrow streets with beautiful gardens, coffee houses, galleries and designer boutiques. There are some incredible things to do while visiting Croatia on a luxury yacht — The Stradum is a must for a relaxed evening cocktail, otherwise the world-famous cliff bars are a short walk away. The nearby island of Lokrum was also used as a filming location for the city of Qarth.

How to visit: There are excellent superyacht facilities in the city, making it perfect for a luxury yacht vacation in Croatia — the Adriatic Croatia International Club (ACI Dubrovnik) can accommodate yachts measuring up to 60 metres. Amenities include luxury shops, restaurant and bars as well as a tennis court, swimming pool and hairdresser.

Fictional setting: King’s Landing

True Location: Mdina

Before filming moved to Dubrovnik for season two, Mdina was the main filming location for King’s Landing. Known as the Silent City, Mdina’s history stretches back more than 4,000 years, and is home to many historical places of interest, such as the Roman Villa, catacombs and the Knights of St John cathedral. Aside from the museums and religious relics, there are some wonderfully quirky spots to sit back and relax. The Crystal Palace bakery is famous for its pastizzi and the Fontanella Tea Garden is renowned for its homemade cakes, pies and pastizzi.

How to visit: Valetta sports a vast natural harbour, the Grand Harbour Marina, which is set against a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers berths for superyachts measuring up to 135 metres, so it's definitely worth spending some time exploring Malta by superyacht .

Fictional setting: Pyke, The Iron Islands

In the Game of Thrones books and television show, The Iron Islands are a group of seven islands just west of Westeros. Ruled by House Greyjoy from the island of Pyke, it is cold, rugged and barren.

True location: Ballintoy Harbour

Ballintoy is a quintessentially rural Irish village and a lovely stop over for those exploring the rugged coastlines. It’s quaint and rustic, with a handful of shops and restaurants, as well as the famous Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. The harbour was featured in Game of Thrones as the port in The Iron Islands. It’s here where Theon Greyjoy first meets his sister Yara and admires his own ship. The Dark Hedges are also close at hand, which is a famous avenue of 18th century beech trees, where used as a location for the King’s Road.

How to visit: It may be a little off the beaten track for superyachts, but with the Giant’s Causeway and the Bushmills Distillery so close by, it’s definitely worth the trip. Larger vessels can moor in a number of locations in Belfast, but another option is to anchor out and then tender in to Ballycastle Marina. Unfortunately it can only accommodate yachts up to 20 metres but it is just a short drive to the Ballintoy Harbour and other attractions.

Fictional Setting: Meereen

The largest of the three slaver cities, Meereen is home to the Great Pyramid and a number of temples. Daenerys Targaryen conquers the colourful city and resides here as she makes her plans.

True Location: Peñíscola

Peñíscola (Castellón) was used in season six for the streets and gardens of Meereen, including the Door of Felipe II, Artillería Park and Plaza de Armas, Santa María Square. Peñíscola Castle was built between 1294 and 1307 by the Knights Templar, and the town itself is a beautiful fortified seaport that’s well worth exploring.

How to visit:  Spain enjoyed a bumper superyacht charter season last year, but there are no superyacht facilities near to Peñíscola. However, it is possible to tender into the picturesque Peñíscola Marina. Alternatively the Valencia Yacht Base is just under a two hour drive away, and they have berths for boats up to 120 metres with a huge range of superyacht services for those either on private boats or on a yacht charter around Spain's sunny coast .

Fictional setting: Sunspear, Dorne

Sunspear is the capital of Dorne, one of the seven kingdoms of Westoros ruled by House Martell. Dorne is connected to the rest of the continent through the Red Mountains and is bordered in the north by the Sea of Dorne.

True Location: Alcázar of Seville

Seville’s beautiful Alcázar was built in the 14th century and was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. It’s a popular tourist attraction with a number of high-end eateries — Abantal is one of two Seville restaurants with a Michelin star and offers an intricate tasting menu. On the way to the Alcázar of Seville be sure to wander through the Parque de Maria Luisa to the Plaza de España, which is a striking landmark featuring architecture from the 1920s.

How to visit: There are a number of marinas for smaller vessels along the Guadalquivir river, but the closest to the Alcázar of Seville is Club Náutico Sevilla, which hosts 150 moorings for boats with a maximum length of 36 metres.

Embark on the Ultimate ‘Game of Thrones’ Yacht Charter

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: April 6, 2018

game of thrones yacht

Kateryna kyslyak was traveling the Croatian coast between Dubrovnik and Split, making all the stops that charter clients can make, trying to figure out how far from each port the cast and crew from HBO’s Game of Thrones had gone to shoot iconic scenes. It took her just two weeks to find seasons two through six. “It almost looks like on TV,” says Kyslyak, whose company, Contact Yachts, is offering Game of Thrones charter itineraries this summer. “I have never seen anything better preserved than the old towns of Croatia. They wouldn’t need that many graphics or extra people; they were filming while tons of tourists were just walking around.”

Game of Thrones yacht charter

The show’s final season is scheduled to air in 2019, and excitement is high in places where the cast and crew have filmed. Those locations dovetail with popular waypoints on yacht-charter itineraries: Dubrovnik is a main filming location for King’s Landing, capital of the imaginary Seven Kingdoms in Westeros; it was in real-life Gradac Park, just outside of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, that fictional King Joffrey was poisoned during the show’s Purple Wedding; and Fort Lovrijenac is the filming location for the Red Keep (whose imposing seaside presence, in reality, has earned it the nickname “Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar”).

Crews from the HBO show ‘Game of Thrones’ film often in Croatia — at locations easy to access by charter yacht.

“Local people, they offer guided tours, and they also tell you stories about their relatives who played a sadistic part in some episode, or maybe they played a slave,” Kyslyak says. “They tell you the stories and then recommend where you can eat at a local place where the cast and the crew had dinner.”

The really good news is that Game of Thrones tchotchke shops aren’t sprouting up everywhere to mar the natural beauty. A few are around, but Kyslyak saw just one during the entire two weeks that she scouted sites. Otherwise, the spots are perfectly preserved, which is likely what attracted the show’s producers.

“The artisans, the shops, they’re doing their own thing,” she says. “They are very welcoming, and fans will definitely find their way. You don’t need to look for the locations. They’re just there.”

The stretch of Croatian coastline from Dubrovnik to Split has been popular with charter clients for a number of years now. It can include stops at locations such as Mljet, Korcula and Hvar, which offer a combination of beautiful natural backdrops for watersports fun, as well as classical architecture for sightseeing. During a seven- to 10-day charter itinerary, Kyslyak says, it’s easy to incorporate the Game of Thrones stops along with those others.

Days can begin around 10 a.m. with breakfast aboard, and because the sun stays up late during summer, afternoons can go on as long as everyone is having fun ashore. Two days apiece in Dubrovnik and Split should do it, with everywhere in between being negotiable according to the charter client’s tastes.

Locals in Croatia will tell you about their relatives who played sadistic extras or slaves in past episodes.

For instance, with a stop at Klis Fortress near Split, Game of Thrones fans can discuss its fantasy-world namesake — the city of Meereen — while charter guests who don’t watch the show and simply want to enjoy the scenery will also have lots to do.

Game of Thrones yacht charter

“I highly recommend it,” Kyslyak says. “You see a panoramic view of the Adriatic and the whole coast. And not only that, but you also see the villages and how Croatians really live. You can just embrace all of it.”

She offers just one warning: Don’t wait too long to book. The season seven Game of Thrones premiere drew a reported 30 million viewers last year, and with season eight expected to be the last, fans are likely to swarm come summer 2019, when it airs.

“Here in Europe, everybody is watching it too,” she says. “A lot of my friends, when they found out I was going to the locations, they couldn’t believe it.”

Exploring Croatia: The "Game of Thrones" Itinerary on Board "James Bond" Yacht

contact-yachts-210310-023624-001

Croatia, a miniature Balkan state that stretches out along the Adriatic coast, attracts more and more travellers from all over the world every year. The hugely popular TV series, Game of Thrones has ensured that the destination’s popularity is on the up and up. In the same way, the number of travel bloggers extolling the beauty of the Dalmatian coast has skyrocketed, causing an influx of relaxation-hungry vacationers whose aim it is to escape a bustling city… and find peace in a quieter location; seclusion framed by a shimmering sea.

Croatia is a land of many wonders, home to over a thousand islands, incredibly detailed architecture and numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites . Here, the aroma of delicious Dalmatian cuisine wafts out to greet you and genuinely warm hospitality is extended to all. With so much to do that you would be hard-pressed to decide on a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you could easily choose to leave that up to your guides — A.K.A. your crew — and explore this miniature state by chartering a yacht. Not such a bad idea, seeing as for a week of gentle sailing among Croatia’s infinite islands and along her magnificent coastline, you need only unpack your bags once.

One of the most popular yacht charter itineraries has you boarding in Dubrovnik and sailing north to Zadar or Sibenik. There are so many places to see in between that it’s possible to get lost. and that’s where your crew can step in… and for “Thronies” one route becomes more and more popular as the Game of Thrones film crew left their footprints in many of these breathtaking spots, turning each into a little mecca for fans.

contact-yachts-210310-023625-001

Once you decide to explore the Game of Thrones filming locations in Croatia by yacht, what better choice than to do it aboard a motor-sailing beauty — she, herself a movie icon? The 183-foot luxury schooner, “Regina” stole a piece of limelight from Hollywood stars, Daniel Craig and Bérénice Marlohe in the James Bond film “Skyfall” . The filming of the passage to the villian’s island lair took place off the coast of Turkey, with “Regina” renamed “Chimera”. After the movie’s release, everyone in the industry started to name her, “the James Bond yacht” .

Super yacht “Regina” was built by Pruva Yachting in Bodrum, Turkey, with an exterior design by Ayberk Apaydin and an Aylin Örs interior. She is a fusion design, melding modern schooner with old world traditions. “Regina” was built for ultra comfort using only the finest materials. Her outstanding performance under sail, classic looks and high-quality finish made her a stand-out yacht, long before James Bond ever stepped aboard. Wherever you sail, “Regina” will get all the attention…. and you’ll be exploring Croatia in real style, setting sail from the historic port city of Dubrovnik.

contact-yachts-210310-023626-001

Those who have watched at least one episode of world-renowned fantasy series, know the show wouldn’t be the fantasy-fueller it is without the visual effects. This of course means that some of the real life locations differ from how they appear on screen. But this definitely doesn’t mean that the locations are any less impressive. You will be surprised at how beautiful and incredibly well preserved the Croatian towns and cities are.

In the second season, Dubrovnik was the main filming location of King’s Landing. David Benioff, executive producer and a writer, once said that the Seven Kingdoms’ capital might be the most important location in the entire show, and the crew knew it had to look right. The minute the team started to walk about the walled city of Dubrovnik, they realized “the Pearl of the Adriatic” looked exactly as the book had King’s Landing described.

Dubrovnik has an amazing old town by the sea that is dramatic from the air, from the sea and from the land. Find yourself inside its medieval walls, and with those perfectly preserved walls, towers, cathedrals, streets…. an infinite canvas of terracotta roofs, and a backdrop of steep, craggy cliffs, it’s no wonder that these features served as the landmarks of Westeros.

Once you start discovering the actual filming locations in Dubrovnik — keeping in mind that they are located in three main zones: the walled city, the Lovrijenac Fortress, and the Gradac park — it is up to you how to start your walking tour.

Let’s propose starting with the scenic and stunning Lovrijenac Fortress which became the new Red Keep in King’s Landing. It is located on a high rocky cliff and is naturally so impressive. This location allowed the crew to shoot perfect exterior shots which had proven difficult in the previous location, Malta. The bay where the fort is set also served as a place to film the largest fight in the War of the Five Kings – the Battle of Blackwater Bay . After exploring these sites, you would probably be in need of refreshments and in this case, there is a nice restaurant just near the Pile Gate with an expansive terrace where you can enjoy coffee or lemonade while taking in a beautiful view of the fortress and the bay. Ask for a table closer to the edge so that you have a “front row seat”.

contact-yachts-210310-023628-001

Entering the Pile Gate, the magic begins with a journey back to the medieval ages. The incredible architecture will pull you right in and the sounds of traditional Dalmatian music played by street artists will keep you there. You can either begin wandering the streets of the town or go up upon the fortified walls and do a circuit. This option will allow you to enjoy infinite panoramic views from every possible angle and acquaint yourself Dubrovnik in there fastest way.

If you choose the wall tour first, you’ll find yourself near the massive Minceta Tower which rises above the city walls of Dubrovnik. It played a role in the haunting and mystery-filled TV series, “House of Undying”. The way the tower is presented in the book differs from how it actually looked in the TV series, but events happening inside the haunting spot where the elite warlocks of Qarth resided, are the same in both versions. You can actually go inside of the Minceta Tower — a 700-year-old structure which served to protect the city — that is one of the most recognizable symbols of the town. Even though you wouldn’t face there the Undying Warlocks, you’ll still be very much impressed with the unforgettable view and appreciate just how unconquerable this city was.

After spending about an hour and a half walking the tops of the walls, you’ll finally be ready to explore the inner part of the city. It looks very large from above, but it’s quite cosy and small when you’re on the ground. Make sure to visit the Jesuit Staircase, the St. Dominic Street, the Ethnographic Museum of Rupe, the Ploce Gate, and the Rector’s Palace as they all appeared in the Game of Thrones.

contact-yachts-210310-023629-001

The walled city and Lovrijenac Fortress usually get all credit from tourists and the Game of Thrones fans, but Gradac park is also worthy of a visit . Not only this is a place of genuine peace and meditation filled with beautiful Mediterranean pines, it allows fabulous views of the blue of the Adriatic and the Lovrijenac Fortress. In the series, Gradac park appears as a place where the Purple Wedding reception took place , a very significant event in the fourth season. It is during that Royal Wedding Carnival that King Joffrey was poisoned.

By the way, Game of Thrones isn’t the only fantasy which was filmed in Dubrovnik. Last year the old town hosted the crew of Lucasfilm and Rian Johnson who shot scenes for Star Wars Episode VIII . At the beginning of this year “the Pearl of the Adriatic” also welcomed the production team of “Robin Hood: Origins” . May the force be with Dubrovnik. Who knows, maybe this year you’ll also witness some of the filming process too!

Now that you’ve seen Dubrovnik, you’ll understand that why the crew of the TV series simply fell in love with this place and whole of Croatia, too. It is time to move on with your journey in this magnificent country. By the time you go back to the yacht, it could well be evening already. And this can only mean one thing: it’s time for an outstanding culinary experience aboard the luxurious “Regina”. We’re sure the chef has prepared a spread of delicious and extravagant meals for pure gourmet pleasure.

You will have several options as to where to dine: the aft deck offers a comfortable table for 12 persons. This area is completely shaded by an awning making it a wonderful place to dine by day. If you wish to have dinner under the star, the forward deck features an open air dining area. Overnight, you’ll likely stay in a quiet bay or at anchor near the old town of Dubrovnik. The latter alternative would probably be the better one, as in the morning you can visit one more filming location ashore on the island of Lokrum.

contact-yachts-210310-023630-001

Spending nights aboard “Regina” will be a very relaxing and sophisticated experience. The yacht provides elegant and luxurious accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 spacious cabins . Every detail has been considered to ensure the highest level of comfort. The master cabin is located aft and occupies the width of the beam. It features a king-size bed, a walk-in wardrobe and a private study. The master stateroom’s ensuite has instant appeal, finished in marble and onyx. In the bow of the yacht there is a second master cabin with similar design and smaller dimensions. The remaining four cabins, three doubles and one twin are equally as well laid out with naturally decorative stone and timber creating a restful atmosphere. Every time you enter your cabin, you’ll be entering a quiet haven of peace and tranquility.

Even though you will likely spend most of your time aboard “Regina” on her expansive decks, the main saloon will also serve as a place for rest. Its formal dining area, deluxe sofas and extravagant white grand piano are an attractive backdrop for a special occasion.

Arriving at Lokrum, this little oasis served as the setting for Qarth, "the Greatest City that Ever Was or Will Be" . One of the major scenes to have been shot here is the welcoming party of Daenerys by Xaro Xhoan Daxos. Lokrum has an interesting story in that it is believed that the island was cursed by the monks of the Benedictine Monastery, built in the 13th century. The monks were forced to leave the island centuries ago and before doing so, they put a spell on the island so no one would ever be in possession of Lokrum . Despite that, this uninhabited place exists as a peaceful sanctuary in which to enjoy a walk, swim in the sea, and observe the resident peacocks and rabbits.

Exploring places of local beauty where the TV show was filmed will allow for plenty of opportunities to sail. Savour the ambience and the comfort and enjoy the calm sensation that comes with drifting along under sail… and it only takes an instant to sail into your next Game of Thrones location: about 20 kilometers north of Dubrovnik, there is a tiny site of beauty located in the village of Trsteno. This, the Trsteno Arboretum , is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the whole region. “Regina” and her crew will humbly await your return while you walk through the King’s Landing’s gardens. Yes, the scenes where major characters shared their secrets and plotted their next move, surrounded by lush and green, were filmed here. It’s a true Dalmatian Gothic-Renaissance summer residence complete with greenery, mill, aqueduct, Neptune’s fountain, pavilion and centuries-old oriental plane trees.

contact-yachts-210310-023631-001

Leaving the arboretum behind, ask your crew to transform the forward deck into lounge area so as to prolong the experience. If you’re in the mood, try out one or more of the water sports activities on offer. “Regina” has plenty of equipment on board, including a jet-ski for three and a canoe. The coastline is so attractive, that canoeing is high on everyone’s list of fun things to do, and quite definitely a quieter activity. Afterwards, read, relax and sunbathe without having to rush anywhere… let your crew of seven show you an impeccable hospitality.

In the evening, spend some time on the forward deck appreciating a fitting end to a perfect day spent with loved ones in one of the most spectacular places on Earth.

A new day aboard “Regina” means a new and wonderful adventure. Heading north of Dubrovnik, you will visit more wonderful islands and, eventually, Split. En route, discover the small town of Ston. “The Great Wall” of Europe is the major attraction here. We’re talking about a very long defensive wall dating back to the 13th – 14th centuries. It is the second longest fortified wall in the world. Many travellers from China come to Ston especially to take scenic selfies at this site. The filming of King’s Landing also took place here, and the wall appeared in the series starting from Season 2. It is nice to take a walk above the site and draw in the history of this place. But Ston is also known for its salt ponds. The production of salt has been ongoing in this small town for more than two thousand years. The salt works of Ston are some of the oldest still in operation in Europe… and you definitely wouldn’t want to miss some of freshest shellfish available anywhere: Ston has oyster farms galore.

After Ston , there are no more Game of Thrones filming spots see until Split. It is up to you whether you want to sail there directly, and stop off at the islands of Mljet, Korcula, Brac, and Hvar. But they cannot be missed: they are just too beautiful. There’s good reason why these islands are considered some of Croatia’s most famous locations: the beautiful waters which lap these shores must be seen to be believed. We should mention that the Adriatic Sea is as hospitable as Croatia and her people. Its waters gently wash its shores and while most of the time, the Adriatic is well behaved, calm and cosy, we do have a single warning for you: the sea's colors may captivate you entirely! Here you’ll see every possible hues of turquoise and emerald. The's Adriatic ever-changing colours are addictive… they have a very peaceful, relaxing effect.

Since we’re here to explore the Games of Thrones route , let’s move on to the ancient city of Split: it has a totally different vibe from what you’ve experienced so far in Croatia, because of its size, history, and culture.

contact-yachts-210310-023632-001

The Game of Thrones crew left their footprints in none other than in the most famous place in the city, t he UNESCO World Heritage-listed Diocletian Palace . It is a superb palace complex which was built in honour of the Roman emperor, Diocletian. It came into being at the turn of the 4th century A.D. and you’ll be very impressed by how well it looks despite the turbulent history of the region. The palace is truly one of the best preserved architecture sites of the Roman world. Filming of some episodes from season 4, 5 and 6 took part here, mostly in the catacombs of the palace, where Daenarys had her throne room. It is here in the underground tunnels where she trained her dragons.

It takes about 20 minutes of travel time from Split to reach one more stunning Game of Throne location. It is, as yet, not overly popular as a tourist attraction — probably due to its remote location, however, this is a big plus if you’re not into crowded places. Located on the top of the mountain with a panoramic view across the entire valley, the islands, and Split itself, you’ll find yourself standing among the ruins of Klis fortress with a history spanning 2000 years. To be honest, the fort is too well preserved to be called a “ruin". It appeared in the TV series as the city of Meereen during Season 4. This spectacular place was chosen for the filming of scenes in which Daenerys was to seize the city and free slaves. The fortress of Klis is one of the few forts you can actually walk around freely — almost without restriction. The only thing you should keep in mind, for the sake of your safety is that the steps can be slippery and you would definitely not want to slip here!

North of Split there are two more filming locations awaiting discovery: the first of which is in the city of Šibeni k, already famous for its medieval cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city appeared on our screens in the fifth season and was the perfect choice for one of Westeros’s Free Cities – Braavos . Shooting took place at the Square of the Republic of Croatia, surrounded by the magnificent Cathedral of St. James, one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture styles. Here you’ll discover the TV series’ famous “House of Black and White”. Wandering around “Braavos” will certainly make you feel as if you are part of a game:discovering and discovering more as you go. Thus in such game you can’t lose as you’re greeted with beauty around every corner. There are many places to see in Šibenik besides the GoF locations. Some of them include four of the city’s fortresses which watch over the city. Another one is hidden from view and really needs some dedicated effort to discover: this is the Medieval Mediterranean Garden of St. Lawrence Monastery. It takes just five minutes’ walking and a few sets of stairs from St. James Cathedral to get there, but it is absolutely amazing. We recommend you have some of their local ice-cream and just sit for a while in the quiet, meditative atmosphere.

contact-yachts-210310-023633-001

Last but not the least, the attractive Krka National Park is a GoT Location which is well worth a visit in its own right. First you’ll go with your yacht to the cute little town, Skradin , where you’ll take a small local boat to follow a river accessing the park. Make sure you bring along your swimsuits as it’s so rewarding to swim in these refreshing river waters… lush emerald in color. And yes, you will be surrounded by sounds of infinite cascading water. This is what the Krka National Park is is all about and so it made for some of the landscapes of the Seven Kingdoms which appeared in the fourth season. While you are here, take a boat trip to Visovac island and visit a beautiful Franciscan monastery. It takes about 35 minutes to get there: a tiny island that five centuries ago looked like a rock until it was transformed by the monks into a true haven of peace.

Krka National Park is the last filming location in this area. Even though your luxury charter would probably conclude somewhere nearby, such as the port of Zadar , it’s only a pause to take stock and reflect: you now have a treasure chest full of beautiful memories from the Adriatic, having sailed aboard one of the most beautiful and elegant sailing yachts ever built. There remains the invitation to join “Regina” in another part of the world and explore other treasures, for when the summer season in Europe is over, Regina crosses the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean. And she does so every year.

Where is the real game of thrones “kings landing”.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Filming Location for King’s Landing Harbor

Written by Missy Johnston

Where else but Old Town Dubrovnik, Croatia . Anyone who has been to Old Town Dubrovnik knows why this lovely walled town is the perfect setting for “Kings Landing”, the capital city of the “Seven Kingdoms” in the popular Game of Thrones TV series. Anyone who has not been to Old Town Dubrovnik in Croatia , will recognize immediately on arrival, why Old Town Dubrovnik is the perfect setting to “bring to life”, the magical stronghold of the Lannister Family. Visiting by crewed yacht charter is the perfect way to see Old Town from both land and sea; just as viewers see “King’s Landing”, from both land and sea.

Dubrovnik walls and ramparts, croatia

Dubrovnik Walls and Ramparts

The Old Town of Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th Century by refugees from Epidaurus in Greece and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, brimming with historical significance. Situated against the Adriatic Sea, with fortress walls rising straight out of the beautiful blue waters, Old Town was a fortress for centuries, protecting those that lived inside the towering walls from invaders, pirates, and any sort of danger that lurked outside. The surrounding fortress walls of Old Town, the many buildings, walking streets, and even the gates of Old Town, all built out of local limestone, were used as filming locations. Plus, Lovrijenac Fortress, Bokar Fortress and Lokrum Island all just outside of the walled Old Town Fortress were used as filming locations.

Pile Gate Entrance, Croatia

Pile Gate Entrance

Most of the filming that took place in and around Dubrovnik Old Town began in Season 2, with a total of 19 sites in and outside of Old Town being used to film scenes in the Game of Thrones. Lannister’s were filmed in Seasons 2 and 3 at Pile Gate, most famously in a scene where King Joffrey, when attacked entering King’s Landing, screams “kill them all”, and when Jamie Lannister finally returns to King’s Landing after his journeys sans a hand. Myrcella is waved good-bye when leaving King’s Landing for what becomes her last time alive, just outside the Old Town Walls of Dubrovnik close to Pile Gate in the small little harbor located between Bokar and Lovrijenac Fortresses.

One of the greatest fortification systems in the world, and magnificent, whether used as a filming location or not, the fortress walls of Old Town were a backdrop for many scenes in the TV Series, filmed on the ramparts and in front of the walls. Minceta Tower, the highest point in Dubrovnik, was used a filming location both for the “House of the Undying” in Qarth, and Daenery’s search for her stolen dragons.

Jesuit Staircase, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Jesuit Staircase, Dubrovnik, Croatia

The 16th Century Ethnographic Museum was transformed into Littlefinger’s brothel in “King’s Landing”. The Jesuit Stairs were used in various scenes, perhaps most famously as the setting from where Cercei begins her walk of atonement to return home. The 15th Century Rector’s Palace, now a museum, was the location for the Spice King’s mansion whom Daenerys visits to beg for ships to carry her army across the “Narrow Sea”. The Stradun, the main street in Old Town was used for the Walk of Penance in Season 5. The narrow streets of Dubrovnik were the backdrop for most of the market scenes in “King’s Landing” as well as scenes with the City Watch, and the hunting down and murder of the bastard children.

The Ploče Gate on the eastern side of Old Town was used several times, most notably as the entrance to the “Red Keep”, used by Cercsei at the end of her Walk of Shame. Hotel Belvedere is a derelict hotel just outside Dubrovnik where the infamous fight scene between Prince Oberyn and the Mountain in Season 4 was filmed in the little amphitheater on site. Fort Bokar, which forms part of the Dubrovnik City Walls, was used in often when filming the sea walls for “King’s Landing”. Fort Lovrijenac was used often when filming scenes that took place in the Red Keep in Season 2 and 3. The nearby island of Lokrum was the location for the “City of Qarth” where Daenerys socializes with the city’s most important citizens.

Croatia, Dubrovnik, Yacht charter

The Harbor where Myrcella was waved good-bye

Old Town Dubrovnik was felt to be very evocative of exactly what might be in the mind’s eye for so many of the scenes filmed in the Game of Thrones. However, don’t stop there. Cruise along the coast of Dubrovnik on a crewed yacht charter up to Sibenik to see various filming locations along the way for other important scenes in the Game of Thrones TV series, and see more of the lovely coastline and islands of Croatia.

People have said that Shakespeare’s tragedies and his penchant for killing off major characters have been the precursor to the hit television series Game of Thrones. One thing Shakespeare did not benefit from was sets of gargantuan proportions, not least UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the heart of Croatia .

Series 3 of the HBO show has just come to another dramatic conclusion and for fans who wish to delve a bit deeper and see some of the spectacular locations used in the filming, now can do so by visiting Croatia and taking advantage of some of the many tours now available.

The country is having to prepare annually for the veritable flood of Game of Thrones tourists that is not dissimilar to that which descended upon New Zealand in the advent of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and latterly, The Hobbit series. The HBO phenomenon has been gathering pace since the series started in 2011 and the Croatian tourist board has assisted the country’s entire economy with a substantial boost.

Diocletian Palace, Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, which is already a major Mediterranean vacation city and seaport, is the setting for the story’s capital of the Seven Kingdoms, King’s Landing. For those who monitor tourism and its effect on the economy are delighted. They allowed HBO to film in the city in the midst of the high season as the knock on effect in employment and revenue was worth the huge disruption.

Several  online companies have been cropping up offering Game of Thrones trips and tours of all lengths and prices. These itineraries take in some of Croatia’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the walled city of Dubrovnik, the Diocletian Palace and the Krka National Park. Each of these ancient sites provide the backdrops for the battles, intrigues and the oft-talked about dragons, all set on the fantasy continents of Westeros and Essos.

Krka National Park

Other locations across Croatia also appear in the series as fictional towns - the islands of Lokrum off the coast of Dubrovnik and Mrkan off the coast of Cavtat, the village of Mlini, the fortresses of Minceta, Bokar, Klis and Lovrijenac, the Trsteno Arboretum and the Dubac quarry.

And what better way to arrive on the trip of a lifetime than by superyacht? Croatia and most especially the Dalmatian Coast has one of the most enviable coastlines in Europe, with an array of beautiful islands to visit, not to mention crystal clear waters, picturesque harbours and medieval ports.

Game of Thrones in Croatia - Filming Locations to Visit on Your Sailing Holiday

While the wildly popular HBO series ended in 2019, Game of Thrones undoubtedly left its mark after nearly a decade on our television screens - and Croatia is lucky to benefit from the buzz.

George R.R. Martin's fantasy drama series took place on fictional continents, which required whimsical locations to imitate the dark and dreamy medieval story plot. Though you may not jump to Croatia’s stunning and sunny seascapes to emulate precisely what Martin had in mind, its ancient architecture and magical scenery played a pertinent part in portraying some of the series’ defining moments.

It’s not difficult for you to visit any of these filming locations today, even after the show came to a close two years ago. Better yet - most of these spots are already on your Croatian sailing route.

Split sailing route

Game of Thrones fans who begin their sailing holiday in Split will be happy to learn there are a few locations worth visiting.

Diocletian’ Palace

Diocletian’ Palace

Split’s most popular attraction is undoubtedly the 1700-year-old Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO-protected architectural jewel that is the focal point of the city’s old town. Local life thrives around this Roman emperor’s retirement residence, enveloped by boutiques, bustling bars and restaurants tucked into tiny alleyways. Game of Thrones used Diocletian’s palace and its cellars to showcase fan favorite Daenerys and her throne room where she trains her three dragons. Later in the series, the cellars were also used as the home to Meereenese slaves.

Klis Fortress

Klis Fortress

Just a short drive outside of Split is the tiny town of Klis, which boasts an imposing 9th-century hilltop fortress with sweeping views of the Adriatic Sea. It comes as no surprise, then, that this fortress became a foolproof location for the popular TV series, and precisely to depict the city of Meereen. One of the series’ most memorable scenes comes from this exact location when Khaleesi seizes the city and punishes the Meereen rulers by nailing them to crosses.

Another 20-minute drive inland from Split is Žrnovnica, a small settlement known chiefly for grain mills. Today, however, Žrnovnica attracts visitors due to its watermill, where Daenerys's handmaiden and interpreter Missandei is filmed bathing. But that’s not all. The Žrnovnica quarry was also the backdrop for the famous Season 4 scene where the Unsullied battled for Daenerys, and Daario Naharis killed the city champion.

Kaštel Gomilica

Pro tip: If your boat charter leaves from Kaštela, head to Kaštel Gomilica to explore the free City of Braavos!

Dubrovnik sailing route

The real Game of Thrones fanfare is held in Dubrovnik, with several locations you can visit along the Adriatic and in the famous city’s Old Town.

Trsteno Arboretum

Trsteno Arboretum

This 15-century summer residence is one of the oldest arboretums in the entire region. Just a 20-minute drive north of Dubrovnik, Trsteno spans 25 hectares and is a Gothic-Renaissance dream, fit with an aqueduct, mill, fountains, and pavilion with views onto the Adriatic Sea. Trsteno acts as the King’s Landing palace gardens which play host to a few crucial scenes in Season 3. Sansa Stark reveals King Joffrey’s secrets at Trsteno, and Lord Varys and Lady Olenna discuss Sansa Stark’s wellbeing.

King’s Landing

King's Landing

Arguably the most famous film set in the series is King’s Landing, the stronghold of the Lannister family, which has brought incredible acclaim to the already popular Dubrovnik old town. Dubrovnik’s historic core and outer walls were repeatedly spotted in the series, and even today, some believe that Dubrovnik’s old town was created especially for the TV show. With architecture this magical, we can see why they’d be easily fooled.

Because King’s Landing was such a powerful part of this plot, it’s best to break it down by the individual locations and their most memorable scenes.

Pile Gate

The main entrance to the Old Town is the famous 15th-century Pile Gate, located on the city’s western side. Depicted as Blackwater Bay in Game of Thrones, you’ll likely recognize Pile as the backdrop to the Season 3 episode when Sansa Stark and Lord Baelish plan their escape after King Joffrey’s death.

Bokar Fortress

Bokar Fortress

Set above Pile Gate is Bokar Fortress, one of the trademark defense towers in Dubrovnik. This 15th century fortress was built by Italian architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo to defend the famous gate below. Bokar was used as the setting for a Season 2 conversation when Tyrion and Lord Varys discuss defending King’s Landing, though an even more key moment came in Season 8 when Daenerys decides to burn the city to the ground.

Minčeta Tower

Minčeta Tower

Dubrovnik old town’s highest point acted as the outer walls of the House of the Undying. You may remember this iconic defense tower when Daenerys and Jorah Mormont try to enter the House so Daenerys can retrieve her stolen dragons.

Lovrijenac Fortress

Lovrijenac Fortress

The 37-meter high Lovrijenac Fortress was built in the 16th century to protect Dubrovnik from a Venetian invasion and ultimately played a crucial part in preventing Dubrovnik from being seized. Its 4-12 meter thick walls give insight into just how serious Lovrijenac was about protecting the Adriatic Pearl. This fortress was used in the series to show the tournament dedicated to King Joffrey.

St. Dominic Street

St. Dominic Street

Near another famous Dubrovnik gate (Ploče) is the St. Dominic Street staircase, which is iconic for many reasons in Game of Thrones. The striking stone staircase, surrounded by quaint houses, connects the Dominic Monastery with Ploče and Stradun, though you’ll remember it for when a naked Queen Cersei stepped down the stairs on her walk of shame. The street was also used to show the murders of King Robert Baratheon’s bastard sons by the Gold Cloaks.

Ethnographic Museum

This 16th century building was once a granary and today boasts over 6,000 ethnographic heritage objects from the Dubrovnik region, Croatia, and surrounding states. The building was depicted in Game of Thrones as a brothel where Tyrion Lannister and Oberyn Martell meet.

Lokrum Island

Lokrum Island

This island with roots dating back to 1023 is located just 600 meters off Dubrovnik. An easy day trip from the bustling Dubrovnik city walls, Lokrum serves visitors thanks to thriving flora and fauna and supreme swimming spots. Legend has it that Richard the Lion-Heart was actually shipwrecked on Lokrum in 1192 upon his return from the Crusades! Thanks to its history, it’s no surprise that Lokrum found its place in the Game of Thrones spotlight, acting as the city of Qarth, ruled by the ‘pureborn’. It was here that Daenerys was welcomed by the Spice King!

Sailing in Croatia — In the footsteps of the heroes of Game of Thrones

  • Sailing in Croatia: In the footsteps of the heroes of Game of Thrones

You might already have travelled Croatia widely — but this voyage, based on its exploration of film locations,  will take your breath away!

Who will sit on the Iron Throne?

Where was Game of Thrones series filmed?

Croatia’s Island Empire has truly inspired the creator of Game of Thrones. And no wonder! The outstandingly beautiful countryside, rugged coastline and ancient white marble monuments make this country a dream location for filming a fantasy saga.

Ideal yachting is guaranteed by the excellent yachting infrastructure with its many marinas, city ports, restaurants and buoys.

Embrace fantasy and relive all the spectacular scenes of this iconic series. Your trip starts right now in Dubrovnik.

Port in Dubrovnik Old Town

Welcome to King's Landing , the capital of the Seven Kingdoms and the seat of the Kings of Westeros. You are in a place where intrigues are woven, treason plotted and vengeance is served. It is not surprising that the creators of Game of Thrones have loved the stunning Dubrovnik so much. The jewel in the crown of Croatia is surrounded by impressive walls which add to its ancient character and photogenicity. Do you know which scenes were filmed here ?

Stradun has appeared in many scenes, not only in the second series .This main street in Dubrovnik passes directly through the city center from the Pile Gate to the old port. It's made entirely of white marble. It is 300 metres long and, along the way, you will wonder at the small and large Onofrio Fountains, Saint Saviour’s Church, the Sponza Palace and Saint Blaise’s Church.

Does this street seem familiar? It was down this street that Queen Cersei made the walk of shame at the end of the fifth series in the episode entitled Mother's Mercy . She walked stark naked to repent for her sins. You can make the walk too — though we do, of course, recommend that you keep your clothes on.

Stradun Street in Dubrovnik

The main entrance to the city is through the Western Double Gate:  Pile Gate . A stone bridge over a moat and a wooden drawbridge lead to the gate. From the outer gate, one descends the steps to the inner gate, which is part of the main city wall. The castle moat has been turned into a park with beautifully flowering pink oleanders.

In one action scene, Sansa  flees the city through a side corridor, in fact an inconspicuous alleyway to a garden from the main road to the city. The mob scene that preceded Sansa’s flight was filmed right next to her escape route by the Pile Gate.

Pila's Gate in Dubrovnik

Minceta Tower

In the series, the tower represents the headquarters of the Warlocks of Qarth : The House of The Undying. Daenerys Targaryen visits the House of The Undying in the second series, in search of stolen dragons.

The Minčeta defensive tower as the House of the Undying

The Lovrijenac fortress lies at the very edge of Dubrovnik, on the coast and high atop a cliff.  In the series, it served as The Red Keep,  the heart of the King's Landing . It is the seat of the royal court, and there can be found the Iron Throne, which Aegon is said to have forged "out of thousands of swords of his defeated enemies". According to legend, he kept the swords sharp because he believed that no regent should sit too comfortably.

The bay in front of the fortress was used as the main filming location for the incredibly tense Battle of the Blackwater. Wildfire will not burn you, but nonetheless the environment really does give a sense of theatre.

This, too, is where the tournament in honor of King Joffrey was held in the second series. The bay also features in a scene where the Gold Cloaks kill King Robert Baratheon's bastard sons. The fortress and bay certainly would not have needed any digital enhancement.

The bay at Fort Lovrijenac

Above the entrance gate to the Fort Lovrijenac you’ll find written a motto rightly characteristic of Dubrovnik: "Non bene for this libertas venditur auro" - "Freedom is worth more than all the gold in the world."

In any case, the place has an impressive atmosphere and theatre festivals are held here every year. The port of Lovrijenac  is famous all over the world for its production of the play Hamlet. Enjoy exceptional views of the sea, as well as the pleasant music and refreshment offered by the Buza Bar, located on the rock.

More about Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is undoubtedly the most beautiful city on the Croatian Adriatic coast. The islands of Korcula, Mljet and Lopud, where vast forests, vineyards and olive groves spread, are in close proximity. Thanks to its harbour, the whole area is rich with history and culture.

For centuries, Dubrovnik was an important centre for sea trade. The biggest boom occurred in the 15th century, when it was one of the most important trading posts in Europe. In this period, Dubrovnik was also a great competitor of Venice, and since 1979 it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dubrovnik Port and Pločská Gate

Anchoring in Dubrovnik and around

  • ACI Marina Miho Pracat offers about 400 mooring spaces on the water, electricity and water facilities, showers and toilets, WIFI, technical service and several yachting equipment shops. There is also an outdoor pool, a children's playground, a diving centre, a laundry service, a well-stocked supermarket, a taxi stand and a petrol station. The average docking price is 145 EUR (for a 12.5m boat). There is a regular bus service to the old town from the marina.
  • Marina Gruž is a small, livelier marina that offers 40 spaces with water and electricity connections. There are not yet mooring facilities, so it is necessary to dock by dropping anchor. For small boats, stopping here can be expensive (boats of up to 25 meters pay 120 EUR; water and electricity are not included). On the waterfront there are showers and toilets, an ATM and a grocery store.
  • The harbour of the old town is fully occupied, so tourist sailboats are not allowed to anchor here.

The producers of Game of Thrones have also taken a liking to other locations in Croatia and you have some of them within easy sailing distance of Dubrovnik.

The island of Lokrum near Dubrovnik appears as the city of Qarth in Game of Thrones (Qarth is a fusion of several locations, for example also at the monastery in Trogir). The ruling council of the city of Qarth is the so-called Thirteen - a group of the city's most powerful residents.

Right here, in the second series, Daenerys visits the Spice King and asks him for ships – but he refuses. A number of other scenes from Game of Thrones have also been filmed in the local botanical garden and the former Benedictine monastery.

The main attraction of the island of Lokrum is the small lake called the Dead Sea, which we highly recommend you visit. This crystal-clear lake is connected to the sea.

The impressive Dubrovnik walls and the island of Lokrum

Trsteno Arboretum

You will know the Trsteno Arboretum as the gardens of the King's Landing ; its grounds are witness to many secrets dealings and trysts. It is here, in the lush, exotic backdrop of the arboretum, that Tyrion and Varys plot who should rule the Seven Kingdoms .

Trsteno Arboretum can be found in the small village of Trsteno, north of Dubrovnik.

Fresh Trsteno Arboretum

Filming took place at other interesting locations in Croatia. We will take you to Queen Cersei's palace and to the streets of the free city of Braavos in the next episode!

So, are you ready for your Cruise of Thrones ? Rent a boat in Dubrovnik and sail away. Who knows, maybe it will be one of Euron Greyjoy’s fleet, whose family currently has the largest and most powerful armada. And right now it is anchored in King's Landing.

Of course, there are also other beautiful islands and islets waiting for you not far from Dubrovnik.

10 BEST GAME OF THRONES FILMING LOCATIONS TO VISIT IN CROATIA

Explore the real King’s Landing in Dubrovnik, Split and Trsteno

By Radio Times staff

Thursday 29 June 2017 at 9:00AM

In HBO’s epic fantasy series Game of Thrones, the Croatian city of Dubrovnik doubled for King’s Landing.

Visitors can see the Red Keep, the House of the Undying and the setting of the Purple Wedding as well as dozens of other locations.

  • St Dominika Street

Dubrovnik’s walled old city is a labyrinth of tiny lanes and stone houses. Many Game of Thrones market scenes and City Watch or ‘Gold Cloaks’ scenes take place here, plus the murders of King Robert’s illegitimate sons. In season five, a crucial character walks through the town naked, as a sign of penance.

  • Ethnographic Museum

In the old town, look out for this impressive building dating back to the 16th century. Once a granary, it doubles for the brothel where Tyrion Lannister meets Oberyn Martell in season four. Tyrion welcomes ‘the Red Viper’ to the capital, after he stabs a rude Lannister soldier in the hand. In reality, the inside is a lot less sordid, and visitors can walk around the cool tunnels which contain folk costumes and textile handiwork.

One of the prettiest places in the old town doubles for Blackwater Bay in the series. This calm spot was once an important transport hub for seafarers arriving in the western part of the city. It has views of both Bokar and Lovrijenac Fort, and Game of Thrones scenes have taken place from all angles of the cove. In series three, we see Shae and Sansa Stark watch the ships before Littlefinger discusses escape plans with Sansa at the end of the jetty.

  • Bokar Fortress

Used to represent King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, this fairytale-like building featured in seasons two and three, and is particularly visible when Varys tells Tyrion that he’s ‘quite good’ at being the hand of the king. They discuss battle strategies to defeat Stannis Baratheon’s army while looking out to sea. Off screen, it’s possible to get much closer; the two-storey medieval fortress is open to the public all year round.

  • Lokrum Island

Six hundred metres off Croatia’s mainland, tourists will find the city of Qarth, ruled by the ‘pureborn’. Otherwise known as Lokrum Island, this is where Daenerys Targaryen gets a frosty welcome from the Spice King. In reality, it’s just as mysterious. This fascinating place dates back to 1023 and legend holds that Richard the Lionheart sheltered here, after his ship was wrecked when he was returning from the Crusades.

  • Lovrijenac Fortress

Upon hearing that Venetians might invade them, the Croatians came up with a clever idea. They built one 12-metre thick wall of the gigantic Lovrijenac Fortress 37 metres above sea level, to create the illusion that there was a huge citadel to protect the city. They cleverly managed to escape invasion, and completed the building later. Visitors to the city can climb the 175 stone steps to this imposing beacon on the city’s skyline and see where the tournament thrown in honour of King Joffrey’s name day took place, as well as where Cersei Lannister speaks with Petyr Baelish in season two.

  • Mineeta Tower

At the highest point of Dubrovnik stands an imposing tower with magnificent views across the city. This spot doubled as the walls of the House of the Undying, where Khaleesi walks around the exterior wall trying to find the entrance. Fans can walk along a high wall above the city and look out over the orange rooftops of King’s Landing, before they reach this prominent defense tower.

  • Trsteno Arboretum

Built in the late 15th century, this lush garden with spectacular viewing platforms overlooking the Adriatic Sea is just 20 minutes from Dubrovnik, and is where all the palace garden scenes from King’s Landing take place. In season three, it’s here that we see Sansa dish the dirt on King Joffrey, with some persuasion from the formidable Lady Olenna, Queen of Thorns. It is also here that we see Lord Varys and Olenna become allies as they talk about the wellbeing of Sansa, and stroll through the garden and under an ancient archway. Other impressive sites include a Neptune statue, and water fountain with a pool of coy carp beneath.

  • Diocletian’s Palace

Split, Croatia’s second-largest city, is the location of many Daenerys scenes. The 1700-year-old Diocletian’s Palace was constructed by Emperor Diocletian in the 3rd century and remains the city’s most famous site. It’s here that we see Daenarys in her throne room, where she trained her dragons and where the ‘kill the masters’ scene in season four takes place, when dozens of slaves sit around a fire discussing whether they should fight for her. While the upper levels of the palace did not survive, the underground tunnels remain fully intact, thanks to years of being used to store rubbish. Over the years they were filled from floor to ceiling with waste, sent down via chutes from the palace above. Excavated in 1952, visitors can now walk around these eerie tunnels and basement rooms.

  • Klis Fortress

In season four, Daenerys overthrows the Meereen, the largest of the three great Slaver Cities, in this absolutely spectacular location 20 minutes north of Split. With panoramic views across a valley and the city beneath, this imposing fort has guarded the seat for many a Croatian king. Today, it’s a peaceful but dramatic place. Hikers can climb to the top to see where Khalisi answered ‘injustice with justice’ by nailing the city’s former rulers to crosses for hundreds to see.

Game of Thrones locations you can explore on a yacht

Best game of thrones locations-yacht charter-mediterranean

Croatia and Malta have become tourist hotspots in recent years, and a part of it is thanks to their links to Game of Thrones.

If you are a fan of the serie, summer is the best time to plan a trip around the Mediterranean and to see some of these great filming locations. Dubrovnik, Split and some other surrounding towns and sites have transformed into key sites in the GOT universe in Croatia. And the best news? Many of these places are also great yachting destinations!

Here are the main ones.

Game of Thrones locations in Croatia

The centre of dubrovnik: the most recognisable place from game of thrones.

Game_of_Thrones-Dubrovnik-Rector s_Palace

This foreboding, fortified city will be immediately recognisable to fans of the show. The ancient walled city is perfect for capturing the feel of King’s Landing, which is why production moved here from season 2.

It all starts at the Pile Gate at the entrance to the city, where Sansa plans her escape. There are lots of winding streets and areas where you will stop in your tracks and recall scenes. This includes the white marble main street of Stradun. Meanwhile, if you want to follow in the footsteps of Cersei Lannister’s infamous walk of shame, head over to Rue Saint Dominique.

Gradac Park: an important place in Game of Thrones serie

game of thrones yacht

On the surface, this park looks like a perfect place to relax and enjoy the scenery in the outskirts of Dubrovnik . Many locals will come to do so regularly. However, there is a darker side to this pine reserve – or a more exciting one, depending on your views of King Joffrey. This is the location of the Violet Wedding where the young king is poisoned.

Split: Game of Thrones is a perfect excuse to visit this beautiful costal city

Split-Croatia yacht charter

You can also take a chartered yacht out to the city of Split . Your location of choice for a GOT tour may depend on your personal allegiance in the series. If you side with the mother of dragons, you may be more interested in heading here because of the city’s role in her story. The Diocletian Palace is a massive Roman ruin with breathtaking catacombs that are the perfect place to raise some dragons. There is also a throne room and other important sites where the hopeful ruler built her army and increased her power.

Game of Thrones locations in Malta

Valetta: some parts of the city might look familiar to game of thrones fans.

Game of thrones locations-valetta-malta

There aren’t so many locations and scenes to recreate in Malta.

The show was relocated after the first season – possibly due to conflicts over some of their scene and the use of the locations. If you started your vacation in Croatia, don’t be surprised if you get deja vu in Malta’s capital. This was King’s Landing first. The city’s Fort Ricasoli was also the Red Keep for this season. There is also the infamous King’s Landing gate, which is often best viewed from a boat.

Gozo: a Game of Thrones location that never fails to impress on a yacht

Azure_Window-Malta-game of thrones

Some fans may say that the Azure Window in Gozo isn’t as impressive compared to the King’s Landing sets. However, if you have a yacht charter for the week, you may as well make good use of it. Sail over to the sister island to find one of the important sites in the life of Daenerys. This is where they filmed the wedding scene. It is a great place to drop anchor and enjoy Malta’s climate.

Enjoy a Game of Thrones tour of Croatia or Malta with a chartered yacht.

One of the best ways to see all of these great locations in one vacation is to charter a yacht. A skilled crew can take you around the coast from Dubrovnik to Split and detour to lots of different locations You can island hop between Malta and Gozo as you choose. You can spend as long as you like exploring the sites to see the Game of Throne scenes in a new light. Follow in the footsteps of your favourite characters while enjoying a much more luxurious and less dangerous lifestyle.

The Epic Game Of Thrones Scene Bruce Willis Reportedly Tried To Ruin

Pedro Pescal as Oberyn Martell and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Gregor Clegane on Game of Thrones

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

It may feel like an eternity ago now, but at this time in 2019, Game of Thrones was the undisputed king of television. Never before had a fantasy series received so much mainstream attention, nor achieved such massive popularity, from viewers across the globe. However, following a controversial series' finale that left the majority of fans justifiably upset, the program once hailed as one of the greatest of all time has gracelessly fallen off the map in short order. Nevertheless, looking back, there's a lot to appreciate about Game of Thrones,  and the effort that went into making it such a smash hit to begin with.

A common point of praise for the HBO original was its stunning visuals that made Westeros come to life on a grand scale. Locations like King's Landing and the Wall were breathtaking because of the attention to detail those putting GoT together maintained. The aesthetic of the show, while incredible, did require a fair amount of CGI  and set construction to pull off, so your potential Westeros sightseeing tour will be sadly incomplete. That said, there are still many areas from  Game of Thrones  you could visit with just a car or a plane ticket .

One such vacation destination is the city of Dubrovnik, located in the nation of Croatia just off of the Adriatic Sea. The region hosted the iconic season 4 fight between Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) and Oberyn Martell ( Pedro Pascal ) at the abandoned Hotel Belvedere, located along the coastline. The sea provided a beautiful backdrop to their otherwise brutal battle ... and nearly contained a cameo from an angry, yacht-driving Bruce Willis — yes, the Bruce Willis of  Die Hard and The Fifth Element  fame.

Bruce Willis' 'yacht rage' got the best of him

Per SyFy Wire , this tale comes straight from James Hibberd's new book Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon: Game of Thrones and the Official Untold Story of the Epic Series .

Since Game of Thrones is set in the distant past, it wouldn't make much sense for modern boats to occupy the sea, no matter how far off in the background they are. The episode's director, Alex Graves, explained, "When we scouted the amphitheater, there were all these yachts out front, so we needed to make a deal to make sure the yachts weren't there when we filmed. They all backed off a quarter-mile so they wouldn't be in the shot. Everyone agreed to do it — except one person."

According to Graves, and a handful of other people working on GoT at the time, that individual was none other than Bruce Willis. Accounts from those in attendance that day recall the actor's yacht circling the amphitheater where they were filming — as if to say, as Graves put it, "F*** you, I'm in your shot."

However, Willis' "yacht rage"-induced efforts were in vain. Graves noted, "We were all laughing because we were aimed away from the water at that time anyway," so Willis ultimately just made a fool of himself.

Though many remember it as Willis' boat frustratedly attempting to mess up one of Game of Thrones ' most talked-about duels, others recollect the day quite differently. Executive producer Bernadette Caulfield stated, "I think that's been blown up a little bit more than it probably really was. We never actually saw Bruce."

Even still, if the story is true, it'll just be another addition to the long list of fun, emotional, and downright odd stories to come from the prank-filled  Game of Thrones set.

Probably the kind of activity to do it you’ve seen all of San Sebastian’s main attractions (e.g. stayed 5 or more days). A highlight was jumping off the boat to swim toward the end of the tour and also seeing a nearby seaside village to the north. Be sure to pay special attention to where the boat picks up as it leaves on time and will not wait. The boat DOES NOT pick up by the blue boats that go to Santa Clara island. Getari Charter offers a couple of different tours in various extents. As neither me nor my husband are interested in fishing, we chose a half day cruise to enjoy the fascinating view on the famous Flysch which shows a very unique geological structure. This 285-Foot Feadship Superyacht Has a Glass-Bottomed Pool That Overlooks Its Beach Club

Feadship Lonian Superyacht

It’s not easy to keep a 285-foot superyacht under wraps for a whole year, but Feadship has managed to do exactly that. The Dutch yard has kept showstopper Lonian hidden since her launch in 2019, but now it’s finally ready to show her off.

The vessel was kept secret at the request of the owners, who wanted to enjoy a full year of private cruising without any publicity. That feat was relatively easy to achieve since the superyacht is packed with everything you could ever want or need, and has been specifically designed for life at sea.

In fact, Lonian spends little time moored in marinas and instead cruises the world with a “flotilla” of toys and tenders, plus a 217-foot support vessel that carries additional equipment and a crew of 22.

Feadship Lonian Superyacht

With exteriors penned by Sinot , Lonian sports a deep blue hull and dramatic bow, and is surprisingly slimline given her size. She features extensive glass and stainless steel for a decidedly modern feel.

“She has the presence and stance of a beefy motoryacht while retaining an elegant and slender air,” the yard said.

But let’s talk about life onboard. Her knockout feature is an utterly unique glass swimming pool located aft. It has a translucent bottom that doubles as the ceiling of the beach club below and a built-in movie screen integrated into the edge of the pool, because why not?

Not to be outdone, her automated swim platform on the transom hatch opens and closes like the roof of a convertible car. The teak hatch opens first, and the aft door descends before the hatch closes again, leaving no visible sign of a threshold or door.

Elsewhere, the expansive foredeck on the owner’s deck has a jacuzzi with bespoke cooling and heating functionality. This was specifically requested by the exacting owners, who like relaxing in the chilled plunge pool after a sweat sesh at the bridge deck gym.

Feadship Lonian Superyacht

Lonian features 22 different openings—platforms, hatches and doors—which creates a seamless outdoor-indoor flow and allows guests to easily access the surrounding waters. If further exploration is required, there’s also an Airbus ACH145 helicopter on board.

The interiors, penned by Sinot and Richard Hallberg Interior Design , remain private, but Feadship did reveal there is a glass elevator to serve all five decks and an epic lounge with full-beam panoramic views. The vessel can sleep a total of 14 guests across seven cabins, including an owner’s stateroom, four generous guest staterooms and two VIP suites. There are also 15 crew cabins and one captain’s cabin.

Wait, Bruce Willis tried to sabotage a key Game of Thrones scene?

By dan selcke | oct 5, 2020.

LOS ANGELES, CA - JULY 14: Bruce Willis attends the Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis at Hollywood Palladium on July 14, 2018 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Images)

According to the cast and crew of Game of Thrones, Bruce Willis tried to sabotage a key scene in an act of “yacht rage.”

James Hibberd’s upcoming  Game of Thrones   oral history book,  Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon , looks to be jam-packed with wonderful behind-the-scenes anecdotes, from the story of the show’s disastrous original pilot  to an explanation of why the show cut Lady Stoneheart to remembrances of how awesome Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell) was on set.

#FireCannotKillADragon is released in just one week! Check out the new #booktrailer for the untold story of making @HBO 's #gameofthrones from @DuttonBooks preorder: https://t.co/TuUQ0wubQ6 pic.twitter.com/VBAizGjenb — James Hibberd (@JamesHibberd) September 29, 2020

And we’re still hearing new behind-the-scenes stories. The latest comes from  The A.V. Club , which recounts the time Bruce Willis almost ruined the iconic scene where the Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) and the Viper (Pedro Pascal) square off in mortal combat, squishy end and all.

Well, “almost ruined” may be stretching it. According to crew members, that scene was filmed in a Croatian amphitheater that overlooked a bunch of yachts. HBO made a deal with the owners of the yachts that they would back off a quarter mile so the boats wouldn’t be in the shot. “Everybody agreed to do it—except one person,” said director Alex Graves.

And who was that one person? According to multiple crew members, it was none other than  Die Hard  star Bruce Willis. “[The yacht] circled trying to say, ‘Fuck you, I’m in your shot,’ a couple times and we were all laughing because we were aimed away from the water at that time anyway,” the crew remembers. They saw it as an act of “yacht rage.”

Still, executive producer Bernadette Caulfield said that they “never actually saw Bruce,” so it’s possible everyone was making assumptions. Still, they do  seem pretty sure of themselves, and it’s definitely the better story if Bruce Willis was sailing back and forth trying to ruin the battle between the Mountain and the Viper, for how dare anyone tell  him , star of  Cop Out , where he can take his yacht.

Whatever really happened, the anti-Bruce Willis bias seems to have set in among the cast. In a 2019 interview with  Variety , Kit Harington (Jon Snow) expressed admiration for what actors like Ben Whishaw and Benedict Cumberbatch had done with their careers, and knew who he definitely didn’t  want to emulate. “I don’t want to be Bruce Willis and be an action hero.”

Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon  officially comes out tomorrow, on October 6!

Split

Split is one of the most beautiful towns in Croatia, and the palace in the heart of the town is protected by UNESCO. Diocletian’s Palace was placed on UNESCO ‘S list of world heritage sights in 1979. It is one of the best preserved sights of Roman architecture in the world!

game of thrones yacht

THE OLD TOWN HISTORY

Construction of the palace began in the year 298, after Diocletian had successfully battled Egyptians. The seaside location was chosen for its close proximity to Salona (now Solin) – the then-capital of the Roman Dalmatia Province where Diocletian was born – and for the healing Sulphur water .

When Diocletian retired, he – along with his family, military and servants – moved into the Adriatic-facing palace. He lived there until his death in 311. After he died, Diocletian’s Palace remained a part of the Roman Court, but it is thought that the palace was eventually abandoned.

Then the Split, Croatia palace was occupied again in the 7th century by Salona citizens seeking protection from the invading Slavs. The refugees turned the ruins of the Split castle into a city within itself.

Transforming Diocletian’s Palace

Most of the structures within the palace were re-purposed: Diocletian’s mausoleum was converted into a cathedral and the basement halls were turned into a garbage dump. However, the outer walls and gates remained, as well as three of the Egyptian sphinxes that Roman Emperor Diocletian had used to decorate the palace.

game of thrones yacht

There have been abundant changes to Diocletian’s Palace over the centuries resulting in complete transformation of the historic lanes. By Medieval times, small churches, family palaces and residences were built inside the walls – and, today, shops, restaurants and tourist accommodations fill the space. Yet, the original quadrant layout of the Roman emperor’s palace still exists, with gates – Brass Gate , Iron Gate , Golden Gate and Silver Gate – leading to the center Peristil (courtyard).

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Split and go somewhere for a romantic stroll go to the Majarian Hill wich is the perfect place for it. The highest peak is known as Telegrin and it’s a 314 step climb to reach.

game of thrones yacht

Split has a lot of wonderful swimming spots and beaches, one of them is Bačvice beach , perfect for those who enjoy a cocktail with their sunbathing as there is an array of nightlife. The other beach I would recommend is Kaštelet. It’s a little quieter, but with clear water so ample swimming opportunities. There are lots of other beaches in the area. Just take a stroll and find one that suits you.

Being a coastal Mediterranean city, Split reflects great traditional culture, while also capturing modern influences as well.
