Best luxury yacht: 7 ultimate luxury cruisers you can buy

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 14, 2024

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the best luxury yacht category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards

The definition of the best luxury yacht will differ according to personal opinion and from boat to boat. This year’s nominees in the luxury yacht category of the European Yacht of the Year Awards proved that perfectly.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are selected by a broad panel of expert judges from across the globe. These are people who spend their professional lives sailing and comparing yachts, so you can be certain that the yachts which stand out in this field are truly the best of the best on the market.

The best luxury yachts

Best luxury yacht winner 2024 – arcona 50.

When you enter the fiercely competitive 50ft luxury performance yacht market you better get it right. And the jury felt Arcona managed that. This watershed design for the traditional Swedish brand, by X-Yachts co-founder and former designer Niels Jeppesen, is a big, contemporary new Arcona, one that sees it move away from its cruiser-racer heritage and classic interiors.

The on trend styling inside and out is backed up by a premium level of build and finish quality and sailing performance – particularly if you have the performance sails, traveller and deep (2.95m) keel options the test boat carried, although the latter does limit your berthing and anchoring options.

While I doubt it’ll be raced or will suit typical bluewater use, it offers a purity of performance push-button sailing: a handsome prospect upwind in a light breeze, it transforms into a powerful reaching machine with stacks of control.

As chairman of our jury, Jochen Rieker, puts it: “The boat certainly did not win for her somewhat borrowed looks. She wins by checking all the boxes in all other respects. Slipping along gracefully in the lightest of airs, holding her stride and her balance in more demanding conditions, offering warmth, light and this reassuring feeling of utter quality down below – there simply isn’t anything to fault.”

Contest 50CS

The Contest 50CS, for example, is an archetype luxury cruising yacht, one built to the highest standards and that could take you to most waters in impeccable comfort. This model is, uniquely, available in two versions: this more conventional 50CS with aft master cabin, or the forward owner’s suite version on the aft cockpit Contest 49CS . We ran a full test on the latter after spending two days aboard in the North Sea, where that noticeably high freeboard, which may not aid boarding nor windage, helped keep us dry on deck in a steady Force 6 gusting 7.

As the 50CS proved, this Judel/Vrolijk design keeps slipping along in the light stuff too, providing enjoyable sailing in 6 knots breeze under a code sail. The centre cockpit offers a deep protected guest area, but also links well to the spacious aft deck.

And the Wetzels-Brown-designed interiors of Contests today are stunning and hard to match. The engineering, access to usable stowage, details and finish on the 50CS is first class and to get this level of quality at this size is special.

Both Contest and X-Yachts are early adopters of hybrid power, offering their bluewater cruisers with optional electric drives. For the XC 47 this was designed-in from the start to offer Oceanvolt’s award-winning new 25kW regenerative drive.

The XC 47 is another wonderfully engineered and thought out yacht for distance cruising, in particular for those who also enjoy hands-on helming pleasure. That should come as no surprise to any X aficionados, but what really struck me most about this yacht was the stowage, and the forethought needed to create that, together with how practical it has been made.

That may sound slightly anticlimactic but ask any long-term cruiser and stowage is always a priority. On deck, this constitutes a huge lazarette and sail locker, plus clever systems for launching a dinghy via davits and a liferaft canister, while below decks every square inch of space has been used effectively, with lockers hinged with gas struts.

It’s clear the Danish yard went to considerable time and effort, even building a full mock up of the interior that could be canted 20° each way.

If the deck saloon style looks didn’t sell this model to all – this is the first full non-Jeppesen designed X – the jury were converted once they’d taken the helm. ‘Quirky’ became ‘muscular and bold’. The ease with which it can be sailed from the cockpit was also appreciated.

While I understand many offshore cruisers like a protected centre cockpit and more sun protection, the attention to detail, stowage and practicalities, combined with the direct steering, motion and enjoyable sailing this X offers make it a standout new offering.

Jeanneau Yachts 55

Meanwhile the Jeanneau Yachts 55 stands out for different, unique reasons in this category, offering a completely new concept in comfort on deck while at anchor and a novel accommodation layout. Its focus is on outdoor living space.

What helps place this in a luxury bracket is not simply the price or the creative input of superyacht specialist design duo Philppe Briand and Andrew Winch, rather that its layout creates a palatial amount of private space for the owner’s suite. Guest cabins have their own direct access from the extensive cockpit via gullwing doors.

It certainly makes sense for solo owners or couples using it as a warm water apartment. How many people this will suit is another question, as it segregates any guests, crew or children from the galley and saloon.

I used the term monocat when I first viewed it, as the 55 really does attempt to mix the two worlds, particularly in terms of providing owner privacy and lounging space. Choose the rigid hard top and windshield and there’s a vast amount of covered area including a dinette and chart table – plus a bimini can shade all that extensive aft deck too.

The penalty comes in additional weight and wetted surface, and is felt in the handling and performance, the latter particularly in lighter breeze with the optional in-mast furling, self tacking headsail and shallow draught package we had. However, it’s set up to be easily managed from the mid cockpit with good visibility from the twin helms and easy circulation thanks to the ramped side decks. Full report in YW February 2024.

Best luxury yacht 2023

Best luxury yacht winner – oyster 495.

It is hard to imagine that the decor of a yacht can change its look and feel quite this much, yet the layout of this second 495, Eddie Jordan’s dramatic looking Tuga , is in fact identical to the first boat that I spent several days aboard last summer.

At its heart is a wonderfully (Humphreys) designed and engineered luxury bluewater cruiser conceived from the ground up, built in a new dedicated facility to a repeatable quality very few yards are capable of.

The 495 offers consistent passage making speeds in real voluminous comfort – whether enjoyed from the deep cockpit or the best-in-class aft cabin. Deck stowage and mechanical space is also superb.

Then factor in the family appeal of Oyster’s after sales and world rally programme and you start to appreciate the premium world this sub 50-footer gives access to.

The first yacht fully conceived under CEO Richard Hadida’s reign, this is also the smallest completely new Oyster 495 since 2005 – and it’s a triumph. It was our September 2022 cover star in which we featured the full review from our Oyster 495 three day test .

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 60

The Oceanis Yacht 60 is a very different beast indeed to the 62 it replaces as flagship for the Beneteau range. The yard has learned plenty from the success of the First 53/OY 54 and wanted to create a 60 in this style and with the same deck layout (albeit larger and wider) and ease of circulation.

The construction experience of the smaller model clearly helped too, as this is a whopping five tonnes lighter than the bulky OY62 and with a deeper (2.6m) keel. The telling result is on the water. It feels sporty to helm and we averaged a knot slower than the single figure 6-8 knot windspeeds upwind and matched them reaching with Code 0 and a slight swell.

The vast cockpit works well, sheltered below the semi rigid bimini, it has plentiful lounging space with sailing systems led aft to the twin helms. The interior sees a 3+3 layout, where Beneteau wanted to get rid of the corridor effect of the OY62. The galley is forward to help open out space, while the forward suite with offset berth and headboard aft works well to give space with privacy.

This is an attractive, voluminous yacht that leaves a good overall impression whether under sail, on or below decks.

Ice 62 Targa

It all looks pretty funky below decks on the Ice 62 Targa too, especially if you’re watching the masthead fore and aft cameras (plus bow and prop cam) on central displays mounted in the saloon while you slip out of the dock! The Ice is a seriously impressive, contemporary yacht, one that in looks, performance and execution, won over many of the judges.

The first to launch is a highly customised project for a passionate sailing owner who covers long distances solo – he’d already sailed it 3,000 miles around the Med that autumn. It’s impressively stiff, sails handsomely and, thanks to a telescopic keel, points well. We matched single figure windspeeds, and clocked up to the high 9s in 12 knots wind.

Umberto Felci’s team spent 4,000 hours on the design, providing lots of space and light to the interior and a chillout zone in the semi raised saloon. This was easily the coolest looking yacht, with its aggressive reverse bow, chamfered gunwales and carbon T-top bimini, and all engineered and built to a high standard.

Dream Boats: Yachts you can buy for $10M

Nothing says you’ve arrived more spectacularly than making an entrance on a superyacht (witness the parody video, I’m On a Boat .*) For more than a century, the rich and famous have made a splash with their own yachts, including Hollywood A-listers Johnny Carson, Johnny Depp and Steven Spielberg, musicians Eric Clapton and Bono, and pro golfer Tiger Woods.

Privately owned luxury yachts are an invention of the 20th century. Boatbuilders began crafting the first recreational yachts for the ultra wealthy in the early 1900s, although it wasn’t until mid-century that owning a superyacht became a thing, thanks in part to Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.

In 1954, Onassis, who later married President Kennedy’s widow, Jackie, bought a 300-plus foot Canadian frigate and poured millions into making it the world’s first floating playground for the rich and famous. Onboard the lavish Christina O , Hollywood starlets rollicked with American millionaires, princes, kings and world leaders, setting a new high-water mark for extravagant one-upmanship.

Cruise ship tours: Christina O

Shipyards that had traditionally built navy and merchant vessels began building luxury yachts during the ‘60s and ‘70s in response to new demand. The megayacht industry expanded and contracted with the world economy, experiencing its lowest ebbs after Black Monday in 1987 and the Great Crash of 2008. Its greatest surge occurred during the late ‘90s IT boom when luxury yachts supersized from 75 feet up to more than 200 feet ( see a list of the biggest ones here ).

Today’s yachts can exceed 500 feet — and $500 million, giving birth to the term "giga-yacht," and the supersizing war still rages. The largest giga-yacht to date, Azzam, completed in 2013 by German shipyard Lürssen Yachts, is a whopping 590 feet, the length of two football fields end-to-end. Azzam eclipsed Eclipse, owned by Russian millionaire Roman Abramovich, which held the previous record at 536 feet.

These palatial behemoths grow ever more ostentatious, sporting helicopter pads (and hangars), swimming pools, submarines, discos, beauty salons and a belly full of water toys.

Dream big: Beautiful sailboats you can buy for $1M

Luxury yachts have a minimum of three decks. The lower deck houses a swim platform for easy water access, the engine room, four or five guest cabins and crew quarters. The main deck sees the most action with the salon, galley, formal dining area and owner’s suite. The upper deck typically has a second salon, an exterior lounging/party deck and the bridge. The largest yachts have additional decks for whatever indulgences an owner can imagine and a builder can create.

The vessels roam the world’s waters, often splitting season between the Caribbean and Mediterranean. Most are planing hulls, rising out of the water at cruising speed, which, despite their size, allows them to travel at speeds above 20 knots.

Dream Boats: Catamarans you can buy for $1 million

While owning a super-, mega- or giga-yacht is out of reach for all but the ultra-wealthy, it’s fascinating to peek inside the Dream Boats on the market. Our photo gallery takes a look at 100- to 140-foot luxury yachts listed for around $10 million.

*The boat T-Pain boarded to record I’m On a Boat ,  Never Say Never , a 130-foot Sunseeker Predator, is currently listed for $11.2 million.

Power catamarans are one of the fastest growing segments when it comes to different types of yachts being designed. They have become popular for their stability, their excellent fuel efficiency, and enormous space on board. Now, the Prestige M8 will take center stage in the battle for supreme power cat designs. The M8 boasts a 350 nautical mile range and incorporates exceptional socializing areas thanks to the 30-foot beam.

WHAT ARE THE YACHT TRENDS FOR 2024?

yacht trends 2024

When looking towards the future of yachting, the trends seem to have remained the same - create more space for activities, open up the interior to the exterior as much as possible, and integrate technology throughout the boat to make it more like home. Moveable, unfixed furniture is no more common on cruising yachts, a trend that allows owners to move their sofas and chairs around to make the most of their space. Refinement of some of the usual yacht trend talking points are likely to stick around for 2024 as well including solar energy, electric engines, apps for control of your yacht's systems from your mobile device, and of course, better capabilities to run your business while on your yacht.

NEW ELECTRONICS TREND FOR 2024: STARLINK STANDARD

starlink service for yachts

High-speed internet while out cruising on your yacht is not a new thing, but yachts for sale on the brokerage market that already have Starlink set up will sell better in 2024. "More and more boats are now either being ordered with Starlink as an option or owners are equipping their yacht with it after its delivered," said Jay Hendrix , Vice President of SI Yachts. "If it's already on there and we list the boat for sale, we find that to be a feature that helps sell that yacht over others on the market." Starlink can now delivery 5TB of data to all guests and crew on board with only a latency of less than 99MS.

MOST USEFUL PRODUCT IN 2024: QUICKSTEP YACHT BOARDING SOLUTION

quickstep marine yacht boarding solution - 2024

They offer multiple solutions of easy boarding stairs for various types and sizes of boats. They are quickly set up and engineered to withstand the salty conditions of the ocean. Aircraft-inspired tread designs offer stable footing and there is even a two-step solution now available. If boarding your boat can be a challenge, we highly recommend visiting QuickStep Marine .

RECOMMENDED YACHT TOY FOR 2024: LIFT 3F EFOIL

Lift Efoil for yachts

The new Lift3 F eFoil is the new way to explore the surroundings of your yacht in a more personal way. The Lift eFoil technology utilizes a state-of-the-art battery system, a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) propeller, a durable, aero-dynamic board, and a Bluetooth hand-controller to give you the ultimate foiling experience. Customize yours with your own colors and even the name of your yacht! The latest model offers more than 100 minutes of ride time before recharging is needed.

WILL 2024 HAVE MORE AVAILABLE YACHTS FOR SALE?

viking sportfish factory - yacht buyers guide 2024

It's no secret that the last few years of surging boat buying activity increased the wait time for new yachts built at the shipyards, but also depleted the inventory on the brokerage market. Will buying a yacht in 2024 be any easier? "We are starting to see much more normal wait times when you custom order a yacht," said Jay Hendrix. For Viking and Princess, you can receive your yacht within 12 months in most cases. SI Yachts is also ordering more inventory from the manufacturers to have boats on hand at our locations.. The brokerage market continues to be down overall in number of listings compared to 2018-2019 levels. Late-model, pre-owned yachts that have been well-maintained and have service records seem to still sell fast and for close to asking price.

10 Small Superyachts That Offer Supersized Interiors

10 Wide-Body Yachts That are Changing the Face of Boat Design

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws : “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

wallywhy150

These 10 Pocket Superyachts Have Extraordinary Volumes Under 100 feet.

It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.

Lazzara UHV 87

best yacht under 10 million

Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.

Sunseeker 100 Yacht

best yacht under 10 million

Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer. Lie back on the yacht’s extra-wide foredeck sunpad and watch the latest blockbuster on a 140-inch screen with laser projection. Or, if you’re the lucky owner, stargaze from your private terrace tucked away in the bow, just steps from the full-beam main-deck master suite, with atrium-style glass sliding doors. One of the best innovations here is the wide, uninterrupted walkway around the entire top deck, which provides safe, easy access from the flybridge to the forward entertaining space. With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.

Azimut Grande 26M

best yacht under 10 million

For its brand-new Grande 26M compact superyacht, Italian builder Azimut has gone extra wide to create massive interior and exterior spaces. Spatial highlights include a full-width flybridge that’s almost 20 feet across and close to 40 feet long, and a foredeck entertaining area that seems more like an outdoor patio. The Alberto Mancini-styled go-fast cruiser is crammed with space-enhancing innovations, such as a teak-decked garage door that, at the touch of a button, hinges upwards to extend the rear cockpit by almost five feet. New ZF pod drives coupled to the yacht’s twin 1,650 hp MAN V12 diesels also save space. It is priced from about $6.2 million.

Princess X95

10 Wide-Body Yachts That are Changing the Face of Boat Design

As we said during our 2021 tour of Britain’s Princess Yachts’ tri-deck X95 “When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.” But what those eye-popping lines hide is perhaps the most spacious 95-foot luxury cruiser in the category. Reckoned to be some 40 percent roomier than cruisers with the same length, the X95 has stretch-out accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins and living spaces that rival most apartments. The flybridge covers almost the entire length of the yacht. The 100 is also fast, with twin 1,990 hp MAN V12s delivering a top speed of 23 knots. Prices start at about $12 million.

Extra X96 Triplex

best yacht under 10 million

This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area, and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley, and an adjoining outdoor bar. Twin Volvo IPS1350s deliver a 16.5-knot top speed. Priced from $12 million.

Sunreef 100

best yacht under 10 million

This Sunreef power catamaran’s beam spans a staggering 44 feet, offering the kind of interior and exterior spaces you only get with superyachts twice the length. Every element of the yacht is XXL-size—from the massive hydraulic swim platform to the full-width flybridge that covers almost 1,000 square feet. Down in the salon is a huge 11-seat U-shaped bar that would delight any mixologist. The five staterooms in the twin hulls have space for 10. A pair of 1,300 hp MAN V8 diesels delivers a six-knot top speed. It is priced from about $15.3 million.

Absolute Navetta 75

best yacht under 10 million

In Italian, the word “navetta” translates to “little ship.” Which is a perfect description for Absolute’s new 75-foot fast cruiser. It’s an evolution of the strong-selling Navetta 73 but with nearly two feet of extra length. The yacht’s expansive interior volumes will remain the same, with features like a forward master stateroom on its own level that has a private entrance steps away from the main salon. The salon features floor-to-ceiling glass, with full views of the water, courtesy of open bulwarks. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo IPS1350 diesels deliver a top speed of 25 knots. Pricing starts at about $4 million.

Arcadia A96

best yacht under 10 million

Cross a spacious Miami high-rise penthouse with a Canyon Ranch spa and the result could be this new 96-foot superyacht from Italian builder Arcadia. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart. That expansive, teak-decked foredeck, spanning over 500 square feet, is perfect for yoga sessions or meditation, while the cockpit and beach club offer another 1,000 square feet of social space. For extra peace and quiet at anchor, solar panels can provide up to nine hours of generator-free power.

Numarine 26XP Fast

best yacht under 10 million

Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.

20 Of The Best Boats Under $5 Million To Summer In Style

James Want

With major boat shows all but cancelled in 2020 due to Covid, the world’s best boat manufacturers have been itching to get their newest designs in front of eager buyers and open water enthusiasts – and where better do so than Cannes? Not only does the Cannes Yachting Festival showcase the best vessels that money can buy, but it also celebrates some of the best boats under $5 million, for those with pockets less deep than the billionaire attendees.

The Cannes Yachting Festival – which spans September 7-12 -features 450 motorboats and yachts up to 150 feet at the Vieux Port, with another 108 new launches in the sailing area, as well as 50 brokerage yachts, a ‘Luxury Gallery’ and a dedicated area for electric boats, multihulls, and sea-trials.

RELATED: Step Inside The 75m Kenshō: 2023’s Motor Yacht Of The Year

While the majority of attention will land on the likes of Benetti’s 37m Motopanfilo and 40m Oasis ‘Rebeca’ we featured last month, Cantiere delle Marche’s new Flexplorer ‘Aurelia’ , and Mangusta’s first 104REV , we thought we’d focus on boats for millionaires, not billionaires, and highlight some of the best boats under $5m. Versatile open spaces, minimal convertible decks, intuitive spaces, and expedition yachts, optimised for range, are all on-trend in 2021. Here’s our pick of the motor yacht and sailing yacht releases you need to know – just in case you can spare a few million one day. Not a few hundred million.

Bluegame BG72 – $5m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

The Bluegame BG72 was designed by Architect Luca Santella as a cross-over of open and flybridge designs, championing performance, comfort, safety, and maneuverability. An enclosed forward pilothouse on the upper bridge offers the captain 360° visibility while maximising space towards the aft for multiple outdoor areas, arranged over three levels, with a flexible main deck providing space for additional entertaining and tender storage.

Main saloon 2 resize 1600x1068 1

The saloon, with direct access to the beach club, can be optioned as a lounge or as a grand owner’s cabin, with a further five cabins dressed in Canaletto walnut wood and leather for a sleek and sophisticated aesthetic throughout. The Bluegame 72 is an exciting and progressive design for an owner who desires to lead, not follow. Check out the gallery at Simspon Marine .

ICE 70 – $4.13m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Extensive use of carbon fibre for the optimised hull, deck, and structures, ensures great rigidity and efficient performance, and comfortable cruising for longer journeys. Sirena 68 – $3.9m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Turkish outfit Serina has used Cannes to debut their new Sirena 68 with a three + one cabin layout for an experienced owner-operator or small crew. A generous bow features a large sun pad and casual dining set up with additional outdoor spaces outside the main saloon and on the flybridge, complete with a kitchenette and full-sized BBQ. At an economy cruising speed of 10knots, the Sirena 68 is capable of travelling over 1,200 nautical miles, which covers Sydney to Auckland on a single tank of diesel.

Grand Banks 54 – $3.7m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

When it comes to building your dream boat, the question of how long is a piece of string is especially relevant – even more so when at Grand Banks. The manufacturer of sophisticated luxury cruisers hasn’t strayed far from the iconic Grand Banks aesthetic but has incorporated carbon and vacuum infusion throughout, reducing weight and adding to the strength, stability, and efficiency of the brand’s V-Warp Hull.

GB54 interior4

In the Grand Banks 54, speed and a soft ride unite in a meticulously appointed package, boasting elegant woodwork, ample storage, and clever uses of space. A two-stateroom configuration is ideal for cruising couples while a three-stateroom configuration can be optioned for owners who prefer a small crew.

Bering 70 – $3.68m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Turkish outfit Bering is packing serious value into their expedition-focused hulls, making it a serious contender in the list of best boats under $5 million. The debut model for Bering’s contemporary new coastal series, the 70 has been designed for extensive cruising boasting a rounded displacement hull with a shallow draft perfect for shallow waters.

STRL8949 1 scaled 1

Built of steel and aluminium – with a wheelhouse designed for utility and optimized for maximum viewability – there’s a real sense of being on a ship, seamlessly intertwined with clean modern interiors, functional food prep, and dining areas, and epic lounging spaces like the large sun pad on the bow. With accommodation for 6 guests and 2 crew and a huge range of 2500 nautical miles at 8 knots, the Bering 70 is a boat you could spend some serious time on.

Pershing 6X – $3.35m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

With the Pershing 6X, the brand continues to push what they do best – speed. Her bold, imposing form will do 48 knots flat and cruise at 42 thanks to twin 1,550mhp MAN V12 1550 engines – perfect for jaunts from Sydney to Pittwater. A high-tech helm dominates the main deck saloon with doors that open onto a large rear lounge area and aft sun pad that continues the streamlined profile.

53084

Downstairs are three guests cabins with three bathrooms and an additional shower room, with a single-person crew cabin and integrated bathroom near the cockpit. The bow features an expansive (and inviting) sun pad configuration, perfect for relaxed conversations and hot days in the sun.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 – $3.2m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Best known for their sailboats, Beneteau’s Trawler designs have been quietly gaining traction as more buyers prioritise comfort and range. Appropriately sized for eager owner-operators, the new ocean-rated Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 will cover 900NM and has been designed to maximize interior volume, across three or four guest cabins, for families that plan to spend lengthy stints onboard.

inte grand trawler62 1

The impressive 31 sqm flybridge is one of the largest in its class and benefits from a guest-facing wet bar and retractable roof, as well as tender storage aft. An optional sliding door allows the main deck galley to be closed off, separating owners and crew, whose quarters are located in the concealed lazarette, alongside additional day heads and showers for post bathing.

Y Yachts Y7 – $3.1m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Relative newcomer YYachts was founded by Hanse Yachts founder Michael Schmidt in 2015 with a mission to develop yachts ahead of their time, focusing on builds between 60 and 100 feet in length – where owners communicate their vision directly with the shipyard. Cannes sees three YYachts in attendance, with the smallest Y7 presenting incredible value for what is essentially a scaled-down superyacht, you can sail with ease.

luxury yacht 10

Her contemporary exterior continues into the open plan saloon and three or four cabins, screaming modern apartment rather than a sailboat. An aft deck hatch raises on struts to reveal a garage for a 3.45m RIB and toys that remains watertight when the swim platform is lowered. The level of innovation, tech, and style – for the price – will have prospective buyers swooning over YYachts for many years to come.

Nautor Swan 58 – $2.97m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

A brand new number for Nautor Swan, the 58 presents the perfect fusion of safety, comfort, and autonomy in a bluewater cruising yacht, with no more than a couple on board. Designed with both performance and pleasure in mind, the German Frers designed 58 utilises a long coach roof, large windows, and hatches to enhance the feeling of space inside, while a new cockpit design with twin tables connects to form a 10-seat dining table for entertaining larger groups, complemented by an easy access swim platform.

The standard layout offers three guest cabins and three heads, with the possibility to add a guest/crew cabin amidships and an extra crew cabin with heads and a sink in the forepeak. The forward cabin provides owners with a proper suite where they can enjoy some privacy.

The brand also used the show to reveal its first motorboat, the Swan Shadow, which has been designed as a hybrid chase, tender, and day boat.

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Pardo E60 Endurance – $2.96m

PARDO E60 Endurance

Perhaps the most interesting addition to this list, the E60 Endurance arrives from Italian sail-turned-dayboat specialists Pardo. With an unforgettable hull, opposing a trawler-style forward-angled window, this modern expedition interpretation boasts high bulwarks for ocean-going safety with incorporated terraces that can be lowered while moored or anchored, converting the aft deck into a giant beach club. The result is a versatile cruiser providing owners with the best of both lifestyle and exploration worlds boasting a range of 750 nautical miles.

6 PARDO E60 336

Like a typical Italian home, the kitchen is at the heart of the E60 Endurance welcoming guests the moment they step onboard, at one with the outdoor entertaining space. Contemporary interiors not only complement the boat’s dramatic profile but create a serene sense of calm in the full-beam owner’s suite, with a VIP forward and a twin room for family or guests. For many, the E60 Endurance will present as the perfect mix of substance, style, and price.

Absolute 60 Fly – $2.9m

Absolute 60FLY

Flying under the radar is Absolute’s revolutionary new 60-foot flybridge, which makes minor tweaks to past and conventional designs to achieve major results in terms of space and layout. By bringing the deckhouse forward they’ve created a voluminous main saloon and kitchen, benefiting from huge windows that run from the windshield to the stern, finishing with a grand aft cockpit and monster swim platform.

Absolute 60 Fly Owners Cabin

The owner’s suite is located in the bow, elevated above the waterline, more secluded and quieter than comparable 60-footers with full-beam masters amidships. A further two cabins are offered for guests with crew accommodation for 2 accessible from a pantograph door camouflaged in the transom.

Privilege Signature 510 – $2.44m

Privilege 510 Catamaran

Cats might not be for everyone, but at a price point such as this, you’ll have even the most season monohull loyalists turning their heads. The new Privilège Signature 510 has a striking design, with elegant flush hatches and enlarged deckhouse windows for 360-degree views. It features the largest owner’s cabin in its class, set between the hulls ahead of the deckhouse and with a private companionway from the saloon – a far more interesting layout than its larger 580 sibling.

44214 16310940

The new Privilège Signature 510 bluewater sailing catamaran is designed for long-distance cruising and promises the perfect blend of luxury, space, and seaworthiness.

Azimut 53 Flybridge – $2.23

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Designed in a simple yet striking black and white – playing positive against negative surfaces – the Azimut 53 Flybridge is optimal weekend boating in a package that’s both affordable and not too overwhelming. The cabin space across its three decks speaks for itself, but it’s the cutting-edge marine engineering that’s worthy of your attention. A double Volvo IPS propulsion system is installed on the hydrodynamic hull shape to offer superior maneuverability, minimum noise, and little vibration.

128 20210413125335 new azimut53 apr 14

If you want a skipper, there’s a dedicated cabin for them at the rear. But regular punters are more than capable of piloting the Azimut 53 Flybridge on their own. Intelligent joystick driving with autopilot offers both precision and peace of mind, Garmin’s integrated control system keeps you across all the important information and active trim controls basically do the job for you. A smooth ride with trouble-free handling gives you more time to enjoy the layout of this spacious weekender.

Solaris 60 – $1.6m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

The Solaris 60 was inspired by the idea of creating a Mini-Maxi – a new high-performance sailboat for Solaris that will influence the boat builder’s nautical design for the next ten years. The main innovation of the Solaris 60 is the cockpit thanks to its full-width steering wheels.

MG 0481 post 1

You can steer the boat without the intrusion of the sprayhood and the jib’s luff is always completely left insight while sailing. Not too big that it’s tough for two people to manage – and not too hefty on the wallet either – the Solaris 60 impresses as much on deck as it does in its ultra wide-beam cabin.

Cranchi A46 Luxury Tender – $1.12m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Any functionality or amenity you could ever ask for on a day boat can likely be found aboard the Cranchi A46. For starters, the entire perimeter of the yacht can be traversed safely on walkable gunwales, without anyone ever having to encounter obstacles. The galley corner is equipped with a stove, sink, refrigerator, and ice machine to enjoy happy hour or meals.

21 a46 1200x800 1

A table is located aft of the bar, offering spacious seating on both sides, and the hard-top roof features a blade system that can be opened in just a few seconds to allow for cuts of light and shade to permeate through the entertaining area. If this wasn’t enough, the bulwarks (sides of the hull towards the rear) can be opened with an electric mechanism to considerably extend the surface area of the cockpit by way of the two terraces jutting out over the water.

Invictus TT460 – $1.1m

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Invictus’ TT460 is striking on a number of levels, but it’s the wave-like T-top connected to the windscreen that perfectly protects those in the helm chairs that earned our attention. Made for long sunny days at anchor, The TT460 invites those aboard to exploit the ample deck and dining space on the main deck, and the builder’s trademark gentle reverse sheer bow and beautifully soft lines never get tiresome to look at.

TT460 925 MOD

There’s an option to have an open-plan arrangement down below or configure the cabin space with two separate berths – a compelling offering on a boat of this style. A pair of 480 horsepower IPS650s are getting the job done under the waterline, propelling the vessel to a top speed of 35 knots.

Solaris Power 44 – $876k

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Solaris’s Power 48 Open was awarded European Powerboat of the Year in 2020, so the inevitable arrival of its smaller sibling was welcome news to fans of the brand – never before has a 44-footer offered so much bang for buck. Some would say the Power 44’s unmistakable design features lines that are more akin to a supercar than common naval architecture often seen on the water.

Best Boats Under $5 Million

It might look like the goods, but its expert engineering emphasizes supreme navigation and seaworthiness. In particular, low noise, power consumption, and emissions, for one, but the starry bow, in particular, ensures the boat and its occupants remain dry no matter the conditions.

De Antonio D50 Open – $707,000

Best Boats Under $5 Million

The D50 Open from De Antonio has your attention, and rightly so. This advanced island hopper not only looks fantastic but will get you to your swimming spot of choice in record time thanks to its maximum power output of 1800 horsepower and a top speed of 50 knots.

2780470 82266204 3

It can be ordered with 2 or 3 cabins, and likewise, you can opt for either two or three bathrooms. The two standouts of the D50 Open are the hydraulic swim platform at the rear and optional 2.5-metre saltwater Jacuzzi at the bow – both of which will be the envy of any yachtsman with a soft spot for entertaining.

Pirelli 35 – $620,000

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Designed by the Swedish studio Mannerfelt and built by Tecnorib , the Pirelli 35 is a walkaround speed demon with a double-step hull and gritty lines. It’s available both in outboard and sterndrive variations for those looking for a safe, yet exciting and adrenalin-filled scoot around the Med.

pirelli 35 3041 scaled 1

A well-sized bow sundeck and a generous stern sunbathing platform with an adjustable backrest maximise the real estate on offer, while other onboard amenities include a double cabin, a three-section entertaining table, space for a BBQ, drawer fridges, and a sink. Its modern, sporty character and great attention to detail make this a day boat that needs to be considered, as are the wide-ranging customisation options on offer.

X-Power 33 – $441,000

Best Boats Under $5 Million

Last but not least, the year 2021 marked a turning point for the Danish manufacturer, X-Yachts, with the launch of its first motorboat, the X-Power 33 C. This 10.2m day boat is infinitely more spacious than might be first thought. There are 3 pilot seats and 8 cockpit sofa seats, with a pantry, burner stove, and two 30-litre drawer fridges behind the wheelhouse for easy-access entertaining up top.

MGR02983

Below deck, you’ll find a toilet with shower facilities, as well as a spacious sleeping cabin for two people. Scandinavian markets might opt to ditch the optional carbon hard-top for maximum sun, but in Australia, you’ll be pleased to know this can also be completed with an integral hood to close out the area entirely from the scorching summer sun if desired. And despite being the most affordable option on this list, it still has an admirable 370 HP Yanmar inboard engine and bow thruster to boot.

Billionaires are getting ready for summer with wildly spectacular superyachts

Superyachts, the most expensive asset  a billionaire can own, are pushing the boundaries of luxury.

The boats, which cost eight or nine figures, are getting larger and include more features than ever.

From massage rooms to basketball courts, here's what the world's richest want on board.

For many wealthy boat owners, a private spa is a must-have on board. A sauna is a nice touch. A Jet Ski or two makes days at sea way more fun. And if you don't have someone on board who can whip up a Michelin-star-worthy meal , you might as well stay on land.

In the world of massive yachts , there's no such thing as too much. After all, if someone spends eight or nine figures to design the vessel of their dreams — or at least $500,000 a week to charter one — more is more.

"Yachting. It's not rational; it's emotional," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, where dozens of superyachts — often defined as vessels over 30 meters in length — were on display.

And while there are certain classic features, such as jacuzzis and bars, what superyacht owners want is evolving, insiders at the show said. That might mean more crew members, more space for helicopters, or more water toys, but might also include manicure salons and putting greens.

"The bar of what is the baseline expectation has increased exponentially just over the last four or five years," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. Clients are "spending more time on the boat and really wanting to extend the lifestyle they lead on the shore."

A lot of this can be chalked up to the pandemic. Superyacht purchases and charters spiked as life and luxury travel on land screeched to a halt. While the market has moderated slightly, the number of superyachts on order — 1,166 as of September, according to Boat International's Global Order Book — is still above pre-pandemic norms.

"What the pandemic really showed is that the appetite for being out there at sea, sort of living the marine lifestyle, is still as valid as ever," Kurtén said.

That means there's a lot of money on the water. The total value of the 203 superyachts over 30 meters delivered last year was $6.4 billion, according to data from SuperYacht Times. New custom builds from the world's most prestigious shipyards — Lurssen, Feadship, Oceanco , Benetti — can run into the hundreds of millions. Even used superyachts at the Palm Beach show cost as much as $75 million.

And it's not just traditional buyers like retired wealthy couples looking for a place to relax or celebrities looking for a place to party away from the paparazzi. New clients are often younger and have families, so want areas to work and watch movies . They also want pricey water toys, access to fitness equipment, or even pizza ovens for picky eaters.

"This would've never happened in the nineties," said Giovanna Vitelli, the vice president of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts. "You would go with your beautiful woman, Champagne — the idea of yachting was much more showing off with your jacuzzi and things like that."

Pure opulence has made room for function.

When Benetti's Nabila set sail in 1980, its 50-person crew, gold-and-diamond-encrusted interiors, and lavish parties captured headlines and even inspired the Queen song "Kashoggi's Ship."(Seven years later, Donald Trump bought Nabila for $30 million , renaming her the Trump Princess.)

"Life on board was considered very formal — big formal dining rooms, boats were high on the water, you would be segregated from the rest of the world," Vitelli said, remembering another client who insisted on a replica of the Sistine Chapel above the dining table.

But the ostentatious, palatial-like interiors that used to be highlighted in yacht brochures have made way for lists of more functional features .

Rather than esoteric novelties like an extra-large safe for rifles that one builder had to construct per a Russian yacht owner's request , the superyachts on display at the Palm Beach show featured basketball courts, saunas, and ice baths.

Owners want elevators and luxury gyms. Pampering options, be it a massage room, manicure station, or a professional-grade facial machine, are a dime a dozen. Some bathrooms have fancy Toto toilets, which can cost around $20,000.

Sterns (that's the back of the boat) used to be built high to guard guests' privacy. Now, they're built as "beach clubs" — an open swim platform.

And what good is a massage room if no one on board can give one? Many superyachts can hold twice as many crew members as guests, if not more. One broker, representing a boat that didn't have a masseuse, said it could be quite a "tricky" issue because if a charter wants one, they have to find someone who can massage guests and "pull their weight with the crew."

"It's not uncommon to look for a deckhand who can also mix a martini, play an instrument, maybe entertain the guests with singing, and ideally even give a massage," Kurtén said.

Of course, a crew comes at a cost . Most are considered full-time employees, requiring salaries and benefits like health insurance. Captains, first mates, and chief engineers often make six figures a year. That's without tips; a charter guest will typically spend six figures on gratuities for the crew who worked during a weeklong vacation.

For the superrich, there must be room for toys.

It's not just the onboard amenities that count. What's known as "toys" in the industry — water slides, eFoils, Jet Skis, and underwater scuba diving jets — are popular, and costs range from merely hundreds of dollars (banana boats) to millions ( submersibles , which are still popular despite the recent tragedy).

" Tenders and toys, the sky seems to be the limit," Kurtén said. "More is more."

Of course, if you can't fit all those toys in the yacht's storage space, you can just use another boat. Jeff Bezos' support yacht is a superyacht in itself, measuring 75 meters and costing tens of millions of dollars. (His main yacht, Koru , cost a reported $500 million.)

Support yachts are also faster, meaning the crew can get to a destination first and set up the Jet Skis, seapools, and the like, Dazert said. "By the time the owner arrives on the main yacht, everything's set up, and he can go and have fun."

Even tenders, the smaller vessel that brings guests from the ship to the shore, are getting glow-ups. The Nero, a 90-meter beauty available to charter for about $500,000 a week and modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship, has custom-built tenders to match the design. The most expensive ones often cost seven figures. Nero has three.

"It used to be a tender was a tender," Jeffrey Beneville, who handles yacht insurance at NFP, told BI. "Now they're called limousine tenders. Think of an incredibly luxurious gondola that's got a hard top so nobody's hair gets mussed when they're being dropped off at the Monaco Yacht Club ."

One thing that clearly hasn't changed in superyachting: showing off. If the boat next door at the marina has an indoor-outdoor cinema, it's natural to want one too. Ditto a wine cellar or helipad.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Vitelli, whose employer is behind the Lana yacht Bill Gates chartered for a birthday party three years ago, said. "You push it a little more."

And that's a boon for yacht makers and brokers catering to the superrich.

"Our job is to make clients' dreams come true," Kurtén said.

What is Elon Musk's Grok chatbot and how does it work?

Long story short, Grok is willing to speak to topics that are usually off-limits to other chatbots, like polarizing political theories and conspiracies. Ask it "What's happening in AI today?" and Grok will piece together a response from very recent headlines, while ChatGPT will provide only vague answers that reflect the limits of its training data (and filters on its web access). Earlier this week, Musk pledged that he would open source Grok, without revealing precisely what that meant.

Why the U.S. put a $1 million bounty on a Russian yacht’s alleged manager

On Sept. 3, 2020, the staff of a $90 million yacht placed an order with a U.S. company for a set of luxury bathrobes that came to $2,624.35.

For roughly two years before that, according to federal prosecutors, the yacht’s management had been falsely claiming it was working for a boat named “Fanta.” But the luxury bathrobes came embroidered with a monogram that, prosecutors said, revealed the yacht’s true identity: “Tango.”

That was a problem, officials say in court papers, because Tango was owned by a Russian billionaire under U.S. sanctions, and doing business on his behalf violated federal law.

Late last month, U.S. authorities unveiled a $1 million reward for information leading to the arrest and or conviction of the man they say was running the yacht staff and orchestrated the deception with the robes — Vladislav Osipov, 52, a Swiss-based businessman from Russia. In a new indictment , federal prosecutors say Osipov misled U.S. banks and companies into doing business with the Tango yacht despite the sanctions on the Russian owner, whom the Justice Department has identified as billionaire Viktor Vekselberg .

Osipov has denied the allegations. Osipov’s attorney has said that the government has failed to demonstrate that Vekselberg owned the yacht, and that its management was therefore not a sanctions violation.

The reward offer for Osipov reflects the latest stage in the evolution of the West’s broader financial war against Russia two years into the war in Ukraine, as the United States and its allies increasingly target intermediaries accused of enabling Russian oligarchs to circumvent sanctions.

Many Russians close to President Vladimir Putin have been under sanctions dating to 2014, when Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine and sent proxy forces into that country’s eastern Donbas region. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, President Biden vowed to deal a “crushing blow” with a barrage of new sanctions on financial institutions, industries, business executives and others tied to the Kremlin. But roughly two years later, Russia’s economy has proved surprisingly resilient after the nation poured tens of billions of dollars into ramping up its military industry. Moscow has also worked around the sanctions, finding new third parties to supply it with critical military and industrial hardware, as well as countries beyond Europe to buy its oil.

Now, the West is trying to increase the reach of its sanctions by digging deeper into Russian supply chains. Late last month, the Treasury Department announced more than 500 new sanctions targeting Russia , primarily on military and industrial suppliers. The Justice Department also announced charges against two U.S.-based “facilitators” of a Russian state banker who is under sanction, as well as the guilty plea of a dual national based in Atlanta who was accused of laundering $150 million through bank accounts and shell companies on behalf of Russian clients.

Prioritizing criminal charges against — and the arrests of — Western employees of Russia’s elites represents a new escalation of the U.S. financial war against Putin, experts say. One Moscow businessman, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said many influential Russians are concerned about the arrest of two associates of Andrey Kostin, the head of VTB, Russia’s second-biggest state bank. These associates, Vadim Wolfson and Gannon Bond, were charged with helping Kostin evade sanctions by maintaining a $12 million property in Aspen, Colo., for Kostin’s benefit while concealing his ownership. Kostin has said that the charges of sanctions evasion against him are “unfounded” and that he has not violated any laws . Bond has pleaded not guilty; Wolfson hasn’t made an initial court appearance yet.

Wolfson, also known as Vadim Belyaev, had been a Russian billionaire until the Russian government took over his bank in 2017. Bond, 49, is a U.S. citizen from Edgewater, N.J. For all Russians living abroad and working with people in Russia, the threat of criminal charges is a much more worrying prospect than the sanctions imposed by the Treasury Department last month against hundreds of individuals and entities, the businessman said, in part because sanctions are far easier to dodge than criminal charges.

“What you have seen through today’s public announcements are our efforts at really targeting the facilitators who possess the requisite skill set, access, connections that allow the Russian war machine [and] the Russian elites to continually have access to Western services and Western goods,” David Lim, co-director of the Justice Department’s KleptoCapture task force, which is tasked with enforcing U.S. sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, told reporters last month.

Thad McBride, an international trade partner at the law firm Bass Berry & Sims, said the crackdown on intermediaries reflected the natural evolution of the U.S. sanctions campaign in response to Russian adjustments.

“It seems to me they have gone through a comprehensive list of the oligarchs, and you can debate whether or not it’s had a meaningful impact on the Russian war effort,” McBride said. “Because they’re getting smarter about who’s who, they’re finding other people who play meaningful roles in these transactions, even though they’re not showing up in the headlines.”

The charges against Osipov related to his alleged management of the Tango yacht illustrate the mounting potential consequences for people in Europe and the United States who attempt to do business with Russians targeted by Western allies, as well as the opaque structures allegedly employed by those seeking to evade sanctions.

With a net worth estimated by Forbes in 2021 at $9 billion, Vekselberg, 66, has long drawn scrutiny from the West — and sought to safeguard his wealth. He made his initial fortune in aluminum and oil in Russia’s privatization of the 1990s and then expanded into industrial and financial assets in Europe, the United States and Africa, with Putin’s blessing. In addition to the yacht, federal prosecutors say, Vekselberg acquired $75 million worth of properties, including apartments on New York’s Park Avenue and an estate in the Long Island town of Southampton.

Vekselberg, who declined to comment for this article, has not been criminally charged by the Justice Department. In a 2019 interview with the Financial Times, he denounced the sanctions as arbitrary and harmful for international business, saying he had been targeted just because he was Russian and rich and knows Putin.

In April 2018, the Treasury Department under the Trump administration sanctioned Vekselberg and six other Russian oligarchs as part of broader financial penalties over the Kremlin’s invasion of Crimea, support for President Bashar al-Assad in Syria and interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Vekselberg was also targeted for his work for the Kremlin as chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation, an attempt to create Russia’s version of the Silicon Valley — evidence that appeared to undermine the Russian businessman’s claims that he operated independently of the Kremlin.

But with Vekselberg’s payments monitored by U.S. banks, according to the federal indictment , Osipov used shell companies and intermediaries to avert the bite of sanctions. Vekselberg kept other major assets out of the reach of U.S. authorities by making use of the Treasury Department’s 50 percent ownership rule, which stipulates that it is illegal to transact with firms only if an owner under sanction controls more than 50 percent of the business.

For example, a month after Treasury imposed sanctions on Vekselberg in April 2018, his Renova Innovation Technologies sold its 48.5 percent stake in Swiss engineering giant Sulzer to Tiwel Holding AG, a group that is nevertheless still “beneficially owned” — meaning, owned in practice — by Vekselberg through Columbus Trust, a Cayman Islands trust, according to Sulzer’s corporate filing. Vekselberg’s longtime right-hand man at Renova, Alexei Moskov, replaced one of Vekselberg’s direct representatives on the board. Moskov told The Washington Post that he stepped down from all his executive positions at Renova Group in 2018 after U.S. sanctions were first imposed and from that moment ceased to be Vekselberg’s employee.

The attempts to circumvent the sanctions appear to have found some success in the U.S. legal system. Columbus Nova, a U.S.-based asset management fund controlling more than $100 million in assets in the U.S. financial and tech industry, is run by Vekselberg’s cousin, Andrew Intrater. The firm battled for more than two years to lift a freeze on Columbus Nova’s assets, imposed by Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control because of the sanctions on Vekselberg, and won, reaching a settlement agreement with the Treasury Department. After renaming itself Sparrow Capital LLC, Columbus Nova successfully argued that Intrater — not Vekselberg — owns the fund. Intrater argued that the company was 100 percent owned by U.S. citizens and that no individual or entity under sanction held any interest in it. Intrater said Columbus Nova had earned fees for managing investment funds owned by Renova. He said he had repeatedly told Treasury he would not distribute any funds to Vekselberg.

Now Osipov, the alleged manager of Vekselberg’s $90 million yacht, is attempting a similar argument as U.S. authorities seek his arrest on charges of bank fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and violations of sanctions law.

The federal indictment states that the Tango was owned by a shell corporation registered in the British Virgin Islands that was in turn owned by several other companies. The Virgin Islands shell company, authorities say, was controlled by Osipov, who also served in senior roles for multiple companies controlled by Vekselberg. U.S. officials also say Vekselberg ultimately controlled the other companies that owned the Virgin Islands shell company.

According to the indictment, a Tango official instructed a boat management company in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, to use a false name for the yacht — “Fanta” — to disguise its true identity from U.S. financial institutions and firms, which try to avoid doing business with an entity or person under sanction.

Working at Osipov’s direction, according to the indictment, employees for Tango bought more than $8,000 worth of goods for the yacht that were unwittingly but illegally processed by U.S. firms and U.S. financial institutions, including navigation software, leather basket magazine holders provided by a bespoke silversmith, and web and computing services. The management company running Tango, run by Osipov, also paid invoices worth more than $180,000 to a U.S. internet service provider, federal prosecutors say.

The Tango was seized by the FBI and Spanish authorities in the Mediterranean not long after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, and Osipov was first indicted last year. The owner of the Spanish yacht management company hired by Osipov, Richard Masters, 52, of Britain, was criminally charged last year by federal prosecutors with conspiracy to defraud the United States and violating federal sanctions law. A request for comment sent to Masters’ firm was not returned.

But in recent court documents, Osipov’s attorney argues that the yacht was not more than 50 percent owned by Vekselberg, and that the government hasn’t demonstrated it was. Barry J. Pollack, an attorney at Harris, St. Laurent and Wechsler, also says the government never warned Osipov of its novel and “unconstitutional” application of federal sanctions law.

“The government points to no precedent that supports its extraordinary interpretation and cites no authority that allows the traditional rules of statutory construction to be turned on their head,” Pollack wrote in a defense filing. The filing adds: “[Osipov] is not a fugitive because he did not engage in any of the allegedly criminal conduct while in the United States, has never resided in the United States, did not flee from the United States, and has not concealed himself.”

Still, the State Department’s Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program has said it will provide up to $1 million for information leading to Osipov’s arrest, warning that he may visit Herrliberg, Switzerland; Majorca, Spain; or Moscow.

The case demonstrates the extent of the U.S. commitment to tighten the screws on those seen as aiding Russian elites, even if they themselves are not closely tied to the Kremlin.

“When DOJ levels legal action against an individual or entity, they have quite a bit of evidence, especially because the threshold to press charges for money-laundering and sanctions evasion is so high,” said Kim Donovan, director of the Economic Statecraft Initiative within the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center. “We’ve had quite a bit of experience targeting Russia directly, and what you’re starting to see is the U.S. go after the facilitators enabling sanctions evasion. That’s where the U.S. is focusing its efforts right now.”

Mark Zuckerberg's Net Worth Grows By $28.1 Billion As Billionaire Trades $30 Million Mansion For $300 Million Yacht

Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reorganizing his portfolio, selling his $29.6 million mansion in Woodside, California, only to set his sights on a $300 million yacht.

The sale of Zuckerberg’s Woodside mansion, acquired in December 2021, marks a significant shift in his real estate holdings.

This 3.5-acre property was just one among his extensive collection of homes, which currently spans approximately 10 residences scattered across California, along with a vast 1,400 acres of land in Hawaii.

Zuckerberg isn’t downsizing — he's upgrading his lifestyle, setting his sights on a $300 million yacht. This luxurious vessel, complete with a $30 million partner boat, elevates Zuckerberg’s status in the billionaire’s circle.

His acquisition of the yacht occurred in early March during a trip to the Netherlands, with the vessel making its debut appearance on March 20 at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where it is docked.

With Zuckerberg’s net worth soaring to $178.6 billion, he now ranks as the fourth richest person globally.

Despite the price tag, this expenditure is a fraction of Zuckerberg’s wealth, which surged by $28.1 billion following Meta’s recent success in exceeding Wall Street’s expectations.

Additionally, with Meta's latest announcement of a quarterly dividend, Zuckerberg, holding 350 million shares, anticipates an annual payout nearing $700 million before taxes.

It’s important to note that this payout is solely derived from dividends and does not encompass Zuckerberg’s compensation. In 2022, Zuckerberg received $27.1 million in total compensation, including private security costs and a base salary of $1, according to filings. Information regarding his 2023 compensation has yet to be released.

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham enjoyed a glamorous family outing Wednesday aboard a multimillion-dollar mega-yacht in Miami.

The couple — who has a reported combined net worth of $514 million — was photographed riding a dinghy with their four kids , sons Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, and Cruz, 19, and daughter Harper, 12, as well as their daughter-in-law, Nicola Peltz.

They were all dressed casually, with David, 48, and Victoria, 49, strategically shielding themselves from the hot sun under stylish hats as they made their way onto the larger boat.

The massive silver vessel — which is a Riva 130 Bellissima Yacht — measures close to 40 meters and 130 feet, and was built at the company’s La Spezia shipyard in Italy.

It accommodates up to 10 guests in five suites, which is plenty of room for the entire Beckham clan.

Officina Italiana Design worked on the interior, and its features include a beach club, WiFi and air conditioning.

David and Beckham appear to own the lavish boat which reportedly boasts a $20 million price tag, as the Mirror reports it is personalized with the word “Seven” — Harper’s middle name — written across it.

The Beckhams have been spending the majority of their time in Miami since February 2014 when David was offered an opportunity to take part in the Magic City’s MLS team, Inter Miami.

The retired soccer star has since brought legend Lionel Messi on board his team, which further incentivized stars like Kim Kardashian and LeBron James to make it out to games .

Aside from business, David makes sure to enjoy plenty of quality time with Victoria all over Miami.

Nicola Peltz, David Beckahm, Brooklyn Beckham, Harper Beckham, and Cruz Beckham attend Victoria Beckham's Womenswear Fall Winter 2023-2024 show as part of Paris Fashion Week on March 03, 2023 in Paris, France.

Page Six exclusively reported last July that the former Manchester United player and the Spice Girls member dropped more than $2,000 on a date night at the luxe LPM Restaurant and Bar in Brickell.

We were told at the time that the duo and their guests were very gracious toward the waitstaff.

The lavish property reportedly features six bedrooms, an indoor pool, a wine cellar, a fashion runway, a gym and an at-home nail salon.

However, it appears David has grown quite fond of his new home in Miami.

He said during an event in 2018, “I could have gone to another city, but this was always my city. It’s always where I wanted to have our team.”
