Our aim is simple: To make the best performing, highest calibre, most affordable sails. Based near the waterfront at Lymington, Hampshire, Sanders is a sailmaker with distinction – offering fast turnaround times, excellent service and expert advice.

Our knowledgable team pays attention to every detail, using materials ranging from traditional woven fabrics to the very latest custom carbon membranes. We have a separate department for sail repairs and in the winter we can wash and overhaul your sails before storing them in our heated premises until the start of the new season.

A family run company established in 1974 by Managing Director Peter Sanders, it currently employs more than 20 people and is now leading the way in making first class sails and covers.

All charities, of any size, are incredibly important to so many vulnerable families – reaching out a hand to our local communities and sometimes the greater national population. One such charity, is that of the “New Forest Basics Bank”, located in Lymington, to help those in need despite a ‘break in’ last December.

This incident, albeit despicable, brought awareness to us of the incredible volunteers who are giving up their time and money to support the most vulnerable in the New Forest catchment. As a company we were shocked that there was such a high need for this help and we were desperate to pass on our support to this cause. We provide on-line information to help you choose the right product, based on establishing your own measurements. You can then easily order your sail on-line, with a fast delivery.

ORDER MAINS AND GENOAS ONLINE

We have streamlined our ordering process, offering a  fully automated calculation (based on a unique algorithm developed using our extensive experience) that can offer you Kemp Sails’ high-quality made to measure sails  at a substantially reduced price .

By allowing you to do more of the specification we are able to offer you the savings associated with that work, and this can be as much as 20% off the same sail ordered through our conventional ordering process – but still with Kemp Sails’ unrivalled quality, and on a (normally) 4 week timescale too.

By defining the luff, leach, and foot lengths of your sail, we can input those principle dimensions directly in to our specialist design software. By further defining the details of the usable parts and functions of the sail, you only get (and pay for!) what you want.

For genoas, this means things like the UV protective panel can be customised by colour and side, a foam luff can be added for more effective reefing, and if you don’t need a bag, this can be omitted. If you’re more performance focused, we can add tell tails and camber lines, or a foot line too.

On conventional mainsails, tell us how many reefs you need, and how we detail each, including or excluding tie-down eyes and reef ‘spectacles’ – these are processes representing time saved if you won’t use them! In addition, there are a number of essential steps to ‘tailor’ the sail and similar performance upgrades on offer.

To reflect the increasing number of modern yachts with in-mast furling mainsails, we wanted to offer these as well. We see affordably replacing them as an essential option to resolving many of the problems associated with blown-out sails that can’t be reliably furled, since recutting – even if possible – often offers only a season or two of respite.

Hoist the tape measure up using the genoa halyard attached to the head swivel and the tape attached to the sails normal attachment point (make sure to add a length of light line so you can get it back down again without relying on the tape alone!). Hoist all the way to the top – effectively the absolute maximum hoist distance – and measure to the tack attachment shackle, and make note of this dimension.

For the sail luff length, make a 2% deduction – so if the max hoist is 10000mm 2% = 200mm so sail length will be 9800mm. This deduction allows for the head and tack webbings and potential stretch so it puts the head swivel in the optimum spot for furling. On furling sails (mains and genoas) we fit soft webbing loops at the head and tack, these are around 50-60mm long each.

• Just received my glorious suit! Magnificent! The tablings..... marvellous!!!... the stitching lines, the overall shape, every detail, all very beautiful indeed! I can't tell you how delighted I am. You must understand, the wind has always held a magical place in my heart and the thin membrane with which we apply our feeble human attempts to have it do our way over an equally mysterious sea..... alchemy indeed. I hold this suit in my hands and it all comes alive again. It occurred to me as I relished your suit the day later that one of the things I really appreciated, was that in your masterly execution, despite many years of hard learned science, though perhaps exactly because of them, you approached the design not with a mindless machine but more the inquiring instrument. You took onboard where I'd too easily lined the impossible and wasn't having any of it, discovering a way to play your sound, practical requirements for the well-made, proper sail whilst accommodating the draw perfectly. The narrow tablings, the nicely snug but slidable foot sleeves, even seeing to better sized eyelets where they would best serve tacks and clews. You sir, are a Wizard of Dacron. At the age of fifteen David Potter started sailing model boats at the world famous Birkenhead Model Yacht Club.

In 2012 he decided to turn his passionate hobby into a business and launched Potter Solutions.

As a qualified engineer, with a good eye for detail, he produces a range of equipment for the majority of radio controlled model yacht classes.
