A Brief History South of Perth Yacht Club was founded on 18th December 1945 and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2020. The club was originally located at Point Hampton, Como, on the foreshore near to present day Olives Reserve. The club held its first race less than a month after its formation and within a year had erected its first clubhouse. The original clubhouse building was an old army mess hut, which was dismantled, transported and skilfully converted by members into an exceptionally well laid out clubhouse complete with dance hall, boat and sail rooms and a motorboat room. In 1960 the club was relocated to where it now resides at Coffee Point on the western shore of the Canning River in Applecross. At the heart of its local community and blessed with exceptional facilities and a wonderful location to match, the club has come a long way in 75 short years.

Welcome South of Perth Yacht Club enjoys a spectacular location on the Swan and Canning Rivers overlooking Perth City. The Club caters for a thriving membership with a diverse range of boating interests. SoPYC was awarded the Marina Industries Association “Club of the Year” for 2019-2020. We were also recognised by the Association for the best environmental initiative by a marina in 2019-2020. Located less than 10 minutes from Perth CBD, the Club offers a complete range of sailing, power boating and social activities and opportunities for all. Facilities include water pens, hard standing for trailerable yachts and powerboats, under-cover storage for racing dinghies and marine travel lift and slipping facilities. SoPYC also runs a Sailability program and radio controlled yacht racing. Our sailors enjoy a wide diversity of yachting, both power and sail, with a very social cruising section for more relaxed occasions. Time trialling power yacht fleets are the largest on the river, and the fleet welcomes and accommodates the inexperienced and expert alike. The next generation of sailing stars are being trained in our Sailing Academy, which offers an extensive range of training courses conducted by a fully qualified and talented team of instructors. The Yacht Club caters for its members with an exclusive members’ dining and bar area. The Club is the perfect venue for any occasion; from weddings to Christmas parties, seminars and school formals. The venue incorporates the outdoor lawns and the beautifully styled Promenade and Beachside marquees. Sailing Program South of Perth Yacht Club is regarded as one of the premier yacht clubs in Western Australia and the Club’s racing program and activities reflect this standing.

The Club strongly encourages on-water participation of members as part of an active and successful Yacht Club. There are many ways for boat owners to participate in Club activities with club racing for dinghies and keelboats, time trialling for power boats and cruising for both sail and power. Radio controlled sailing is also conducted. You may be completely new to sailing or a seasoned racer, young or not so young, male or female. No matter what your background and experience, South of Perth Yacht Club can offer you sailing that will suit your skill level and sailing ambitions. Racing is conducted all year round on Wednesday afternoons, and Saturdays in the Summer and Sundays in the Winter for keelboats and Sundays for off the beach dinghies. Radio controlled sailing is conducted on Friday afternoons. Twilight Sailing takes place every Wednesday throughout the Summer sailing season, with early evening Club racing against the backdrop of the sunset, members then come back to the Clubhouse to socialise over a meal and refreshments. Time trialling is a boating activity available to any members with a craft capable of navigating at a speed between 5 and 15 knots under engine power. A time trial event involves travelling and accurately maintaining a predetermined course between fixed marks on the river at a nominated speed.

Cruising Section The cruising section of the Club is all about laid-back recreational boating with activities arranged to appeal to those who just want to get out on the water with friends and family and enjoy our fabulous river and coastal destinations.

With favourable weather conditions we cruise to Fremantle for fish and chips or may even visit the Fremantle Maritime Museum, make our way to Matilda and Freshwater Bays for lunch or sit back and enjoy sensational sundowners with cocktails or balmy picnics on the grass. Social Activities and Club Events South of Perth Yacht Club has a full and varied program of social events throughout the year which highlight the friendly nature of our club. These provide the chance to catch up with old friends and are the perfect opportunity for new members to meet many of their fellow members. One of the main social events of the year is the Commodore’s Ball, a black-tie event with delightful food and live entertainment. Each year the Club holds a Melbourne Cup Garden Party, a sell-out event which sees members gathering at Perth’s premier waterfront location to watch the race on the big screen and enjoy the live entertainment. Other social events include ticket-only events with live entertainment. Past headline acts including Wendy Matthews, Daryl Braithwaite and Kasey Chambers. The Children’s Christmas Party highlights the family feel to the club. It is a hugely enjoyable afternoon for the young ones and their parents, with fun and games, farmyard animals, face painting and a jumpy castle. Plus, of course, a visit by Santa. Members can also enjoy views of the Australia Day fireworks celebrations from the comfort of the yacht club. Promenade Marquee and Front Lawn The latest addition to South of Perth Yacht Club’s exquisite venue spaces is the Promenade Marquee. Seating up to 200, the venue space extends onto the front lawn so guests can dance the night away under the stars on the outdoor decking.

Heritage Room Nestled into the river side of the Club, with its own projector, screen and audio-visual facilities, the Heritage Room is suitable for seminars and meetings. Meals can be served in the nearby dining area, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy the views.

Head south out of the CBD on State Route 2/Kwinana Freeway, crossing the Swan River. Remain on this road for around 7km before getting in the left two lanes to take the State Rte 6/Canning Hwy exit. Turn right at the top onto Canning Hwy/National Route 1/State Route 6.

After crossing the Swan River again (600m), take the next right turn onto Canning Beach Rd. Remain on this road for 1km, taking the second turning (right) at the roundabout, which will bring you to the entrance to the Club.

The South of Perth Yacht Club enjoys a spectacular location on the southern side of Melville Water at the confluence of the Swan and Canning Rivers.  The yacht club overlooks Perth City and caters for keelboats, power boats and dinghy sailors.

Located less than 10 minutes from Perth CBD, the Club offers a complete range of sailing, power boating, social activities and opportunities for all. Facilities include water pens, hard standing for trailerable yachts and powerboats, under-cover storage for racing dinghies and marine travel lift and slipping facilities. SoPYC also runs a Sailability program and radio-controlled yacht racing.

Two St Ayles Skiff kits were bought with the generous support of Club members, and both skiffs are now available for rowing by general Club members.  Fifteen Club members (mostly retired gentlemen) were involved with the construction of the skiffs over about 15 months, mostly working on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.  This built up a great camaraderie and many lasting friendships have been made.

Building started in June 2022 and “Valkyrie”, the first skiff, was launched in April 2023, whilst the second skiff “Ballina C” was completed in only 5 months and launched in October 2023.  Both skiffs are rowed using hollow Oregon timber oars with Spotted Gum handles.

Private club, enquire about social membership, small price for access to outstanding facilities. Just sitting around the clubhouse enjoying the outdoor restaurant area is priceless with 260 degree panoramic view across the Swan River to Perth city. Several restaurants; formal to casual. Play ground area for kids, Roster to join sailing events .. very good social culture

This place has average food and poor service. The place is overpriced and incredibly slow, and does not treat customers like they are wanted. Even the regulars hate it but it gets busy simply because it's easy to eat here after a day or night of sailing. I found the staff not rude, just didn't care and couldn't be bothered - this pervaded the entire establishment unfortunately but some staff were nicer than others. It was impossible to get the attention of staff unless you are wearing a hat - then suddenly they appear out of the woodwork to harrass you about antiquated club rules. The menu was expensive, but had a good variety - however the quality was average. I wouldn't bother again.

My very average fish and chips that took about an hour to arrive...

The food is ok and the service isnt great there wasnt many people there today but i will be back again

The Club has a fully-functional licensed restaurant, with some of Perth's best views overlooking the Swan and Canning Rivers with a clear view of Perth city. The Restaurant caters for lunches and dinners, as well as special functions. Three bars meet the needs of members and their guests, while two outside areas cater for informal al fresco dining and barbecues.

South of Perth Yacht Club was founded on the 18th December 1945 with the official opening of the Clubhouse at Olives Reserve on the 18th November 1946. Frank Sampson was appointed the very first Commodore until 1949. In 1960 the club was relocated to where it now resides at Coffee Point on the western shore of the Canning River.

Club History

The South Perth Yacht club grew out of the love of sailing and the need to allow the youth of South Perth to adopt a sport that kept them off the streets. A meeting between like-minded sailors had them building the new Vaucluse Juniors or VJ’s as they were known and a decision was made to form a yacht club based in South Perth on the 18 th of December 1945.  Events moved swiftly and by the 12 th of February 1946, a constitution was adopted and Frank Sampson was elected Commodore of the South Perth Yacht club along with a foundation committee. An ex army mess hut was purchased and shifted to the foreshore of the Canning River near the Olives Reserve on Mary St in Como.

The Club was officially opened on the 16 th of November 1946 and by 1955 the club was bursting at the seams with 400 members of which over half were juniors thanks to the training programs initiated by the sailing parents and volunteer coaches. In 1956 plans were initially put in place to expand the site where they were on the eastern side of the river, but they were advised of the new Kwinana freeway build and that the club would have to shift.

Assistance from the WA govt was sought and it was decided that land next to Coffee Point on the other side of the river could be utilised and during the dredging process for the new freeway, five acres of land would be built from river spoil and that would form the base for the new club house. By 1960 the new club house was ready and the move was made to the western shore of the Canning River with the club now carrying the name; the South of Perth Yacht Club.

The club continued to grow and with access to both the Swan and Canning rivers, the Centreboard fleet launched straight out onto the Swan and the Keelboat and Power section were safely penned on the Canning River side. From this basis, the club continued to grow with a strong training emphasis maintaining the flow of juniors some of whom went on to buy and sail larger boats culminating in the Fremantle to Geraldton yacht race which began in 1969 and continues on today. Alongside the sailing, the Power section began time trialling in 1962 and they still rule the roost amongst the clubs of the river, when not cruising to Rottnest Island or points further north or south.

The South of Perth Yacht club has undergone many changes in the last 60 years, but it prides itself with a strong sense of community and has worked hard to maintain its place between the two rivers. As sailing itself changes, we now look forward to the new sailing trends; catering for youth and adult sailing and we can still enjoy the club house with secure pens and facilities built by many hands all those years ago.
