Land Yachting on the Beach at St Andrews

sand yachting scotland

On your marks… Get set and sail! Head to St. Andrews for a two-hour land yachting session. If you’ve never experienced sailing on wheels, then get ready for tons of fun as you whiz up and down the beach only a few inches from the ground. This exhilarating experience is undoubtedly something you don’t want to miss out on while you’re in St. Andrews. The key thing to master is how to stop as there are no brakes. Slow down by turning into the wind or easing the sail.

Where can I go land yachting in Scotland?

‘Blown Away’ offers a range of activities, including land yachting, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and surfing. They also cater to larger hen, stag, or corporate parties who are looking for something different to add to their bucket list. The two-hour session costs £55 per person or £45 for those under 16.

Land Yachting Guide

  • Sailing a land yacht is easier than sailing a boat. There are no waves or risk of capsizing or falling overboard.
  • Remember the sail is your accelerator. If your need to stop or gain control let go of your mainsail.
  • Land yachting is considered a safe sport in comparison to other action sports. Always wear a helmet.

St. Andrews, home to Scotland’s first university founded in 1413, is a great place for a day out and exploring. St. Andrews is most famously known as the “Home of Golf” and even if you don’t play you can watch golfers tee off on the Old Course. With lots of cafes and pubs to meet up in after a fun day at the beach, this is a great place to try this thrilling sport! West Sands Beach was the film location for the opening scene of Hugh Hudson’s, Academy Award-winning film, ‘Chariots of Fire’.

  • Master the basic skills in as little as 15-20 minutes
  • Receive a full demonstration of how to sail and then get out there to practice
  • Pre-booking is required and bookings are subject to change depending on the weather
  • Helmets are provided but please bring gloves and protective goggles
  • Please contact ‘Blown Away’ for special group rates and availability

11 Epic Adventure Activities In Scotland

Gemma Armit

  • Last Updated: January 10, 2023

From shredding awesome ski slopes to white water rafting, these are the 11 best adventure activities in Scotland.

Adventure Activities In Scotland

Rolling hills, monsters in lochs and men in skirts. Sure, Scotland is known for her mesmerising beauty and cheeky banter but Caledonia is more than bus trips to battlefields and the TV show Outlander.

Table of Contents

Paddleboarding In The North Sea

White-water rafting, swinging in scotland, road tripping in a racer, surf’s up in scotland, stay in a castle, zorbing downhill, hit the slopes, hike the mountains, walk the walk, attack ‘the wall’, adventures in scotland.

Here’s our (Gemma and Craig from Two Scots Abroad) guide to the thrilling adventure activities in Scotland.

One of Edinburgh’s most popular day trips is to the town of St Andrews in the Kingdom of Fife. St Andrews is the town responsible for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s union, however; I don’t think the royal pair took part in one of the coolest things to do in Fife, paddle boarding in the North Sea.

The outdoors company, Blown Away, ran by twins, Jamie and Guy, are responsible for getting visitors into the water on boards and kayaks at West Sands.

If water activities are not your bag, the pair also offer land-yachting (also known as land sailing, sand yachting and Blokarting) where you ‘sail’ the sand of St Andrews.

Not adventure based but cannot go ignored; St Andrews is famous for its golf courses. There are ten in total and many more along the East Neuk in Fife. Here you will also find Kingsbarns distillery, whisky and gin lovers.

Paddleboarding Adventure Activities In Scotland

Not quite on par with the rapids at the River Tully near Cairns, many of Scotland’s rivers play host to inflatable dinghies full of daredevils with thick skin (and wetsuits).

Pitlochry’s River Tummel is advertised at a grade 2-5 (we experienced the lower level, unfortunately) and the River Tay at Dundee a grade 1-3.

Head to Perthshire to take the plunge of the UK’s first ever bridge bungee at Killiecrankie (funniest Scottish town name!)

Revellers jump from 132 feet solo or tandem over the River Garry, gloves are recommended for the wait at the top. Action cams are welcomed but customers can purchase photos and shots from the team if not equipped.

Craig and I did this together; I’ve never seen him look so on edge (boom boom!) No seriously, he was terrified but claims he enjoyed it.

Scotland’s hottest new road trip is just over 500 miles around the Highlands, taking in tranquil turquoise beaches, the loveliest of fishing villages, castles and distilleries.

Holidaymakers are not just taking the easy ride in their family cars, thousands are taking to the road in racing cars, push bikes and even campervans.

Check out the Bealach na Ba single-track road to see why that is surprising and one for the adventure lovers itch list.

The Gold Coast, Jeffrey’s Bay , Thurso…

Thurso is the northernmost town of Scotland’s mainland and it is known for its surf. Thurso East at the mouth of the Thurso River is the surf spot which has hosted international competitions.

Brace yourself, autumn and winter months are best for waves.

Adventure doesn’t have to involve moving. You could live like a queen for one night in one of Scotland’s castles (the ones with roofs and heating), making full use of the hotel facilities and living like the clan.

Ackergill Tower Castle is home to Europe’s largest treehouse, find out more at this North Coast 500 accommodation guide .

North Coast 500 Adventure Activities In Scotland

Squat down, strap up and snowball down a hill at 25 mph. Welcome to the world of zorbing. Just outside of Edinburgh, visitors over 5 foot and under 16 stone can experience the life of a hamster that has lost its feet.

It is a misconception that it always snows in Scotland, which is a shame because we have five ski centres – Cairngorms, Glenshee, Glencoe (my favourite area of Scotland), Nevis Range and The Lecht.

Come December, skiers and boarders have their eyes glued to the social media accounts of the ski resorts to assess if the dump is worth the trip.

Never fear, there is ski during the other seasons too in the form of dry slope at Midlothian Sports Centre and fake snow at Braehead in Glasgow.

In Scotland, we have special mountains that come in at over 3000 feet called Munros. There are approximately 282 Munros and hikers call the past time of climbing them, Munro bagging.

Out of the 282, there are Munros suitable for the beginner hiker such as Ben Lomond or Ben Vorlich (our dog, Bowie’s first) at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.

The highest peak at 4411 feet is Ben Nevis (Fort William), which is an additional part of Scotland multi-day hiking trail, the West Highland Way. Definitely one of the best adventure activities in Scotland.

West Highland Way Adventure Activities In Scotland

Take in the beautiful scenery of the west coast of Scotland over 4-6 days starting just outside of Glasgow at Milngavie and finishing up 96 miles later in Fort William.

This trek is called the West Highland Way. The Way takes you through rolling hills, past lochs and villages.

You can hire bag handlers to drop your rucksacks off each day at your next guesthouse (B&B) or go hard and carry your bag, tent and camp up each night. Wild camping is legal in Scotland if you follow the camping code.

The Isle of Bute liked the idea of this hike and coined the name ‘West Island Way’ – two-day hike around the island which is short train and ferry ride from the city of Glasgow.

West Island Way Adventure Activities In Scotland

Winter doesn’t have to be coming at the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven. Part of the West Highland Way takes you through the valley at Kinlochleven and in the town sits the indoor activity centre, the Ice Factor.

500 tonnes of real snow and ice is packed 12 metres high; customers hack their way up the wall with the aid of the partner at the other end of the pulley.

The Ice Factor also has an indoor rock-climbing wall for beginners through to experienced climbers that can handle routes from 3+ to 8a.

Then for a bit of fun, you can try the outdoor aerial course full of ropes, strings and swings to test your balance (my parents could not manage it).

So the next time that someone tells you that they are going on a 5-day bus tour of the Scottish Highlands, you can tell them that they are wimps and missing out of the best adventure of their trip – swinging, surfing and having a swally of course!

Land Yachting uses 3-wheeled vehicles attached to a sail which can reach speeds in excess of 40mph. The rider sits or lays down, close to the ground, using feet to control the front wheel for steering and hands to control the sail.

Land Yachts can travel at between 2 and 3 times the speed of the wind yet can be propelled by winds of less than 10mph.

  • Easy to learn
  • Power is free
  • Suitable for all ages
  • Wind and weather dependant

Training & Qualifications

Training is offered at BFSLYC registered training centres. There are three levels required before qualifying as a pilot.

Level One – Safety rules and basic practical sailing

Level Two – Rigging a yacht, pre-sailing safety checks and a wide range of sailing skills

Level Three – Sail competently and safely. Understand racing rules.

Pilot’s License – A written theory test is followed by a practical test. Once licenced you are opermitted to race.

Clubs and training schools provide yachts, goggles and helmets. Students often progress to purchase their own yacht. Common types includes class 3, class 5, leisure yachts and parakarts.

Scotland’s Secret Sands

From sparkling white shores that look as if they’ve been imported from the Caribbean to cobalt coasts flanked by soaring summits, Scotland’s beaches are among the best in the world.

While some of our beaches are known to sand-seekers all over the globe, there’s more than a few that have escaped the attentions of the wider world. Gather round, listen close, and let us clue you in on the location of some of Scotland’s secret sands!

Create your own unforgettable moments as you sail Scotland and make sure you  share them with us on social media by tagging them with #MustSeaScotland  or uploading them to our gallery  for the chance to win £100 !

Redpoint North Beach

Secluded, unspoiled and utterly unforgettable, you’ll rarely see big crowds treading the scarlet sands of the aptly-named Redpoint even in the height of summer. Spectacular views of Skye , safe swimming beaches and a remarkable skyline of multi-peaked mountain pinnacles await those willing to go against the grain and set sail for adventure.

Singing Sands Beach (Camas an Lighe)

Ardnamurchan.

A musical name supported by scenery that’s a symphony of soaring trees, golden sand, and clear blue sea, Camas an Lighe is one of the Ardnamurchan peninsula’s hidden gems. The ‘singing’ is caused by wind blowing over the surface of the beach or by the shuffle of feet or boots through the sand. Despite the stunning landscape, this is a beach with a war-torn past – it was used for commando training during the WWII and could contain unexploded munitions… Watch your step!

(c) Ian Lavender

Claigan Coral Beach

From the Old Man of Storr to the Quiraing, Skye is home to some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes – but Claigan Coral Beach has a charm all of its own. Known locally as a ‘wee gem’, the beach is made of fossilised and sun-bleached algae, with its burning white sands buffeted by the vibrant green of the fields and the deep blue of the sea that flanks it. Sail beyond the usual sights of Skye and sink your toes into some of Scotland’s most unique sands!

Strung like a golden chain between the villages of Elie and Earlsferry in the Kingdom of Fife, Elie Earlsferry Beach and its adjacent Harbour Beach offer almost a mile of uninterrupted sand flanked by cool coffee bars, traditional pubs and more than a few fine fish and chip shops. Far less bustling than some of its more famous Scottish brethren, an adventure to Elie (and its obligatory fish supper) is a treat you need to discover. And be sure to keep an eye out for the ever-popular cricket game that often breaks out on the sands!

Scarista Beach

Just a stone’s skim from its more famous cousin Luskentyre Beach, Scarista is home to the sands and seas conjured up by your unwaking mind. With almost infinite hues of blue sea relentlessly sweeping across its golden sands, eagles soaring overhead and seals soaking up rays, it’s one of the most spectacular wild swimming spots on the planet. This is the very definition of #MustSeaScotland !

Ceannabeinne Beach

Set in the shadow of the mighty mountain of Beinn Ceannabeinne, Ceannabeinne Beach offers secluded sands and spellbinding views over to the nature reserve island of Eilean Hoan. That said, there is something epically eerie about Ceannabeinne – which might be explained by its former title of ‘Traigh Alt Chailgeag’ or ‘The Beach of the Burn of Bereavement and Death’ from the tale of a drowned woman who washed up on the shore. Are you brave enough to set sail for its sands?

Has Ceannabeinne’s tale whetted your appetite for some spooky sailing? Check out our guide to some of Scotland’s most haunted places !

Calgary Beach

Small but spectacular, there’s no better spot in Scotland for a spot of sand-sat stargazing than Mull’s Calgary Beach. With its white sands flanked by rolling green fields and uninterrupted views of Coll and Tiree, this tiny beach offers big skies and blue water to enjoy day and night. The name comes from the Gaelic ‘Cala Ghearraidh,’ which translates as ‘the meadow beside the bay.’ A bonny name for a bonny beach.

Ardnamurchan, West Coast

Set on mainland Britain’s most westerly point on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Sanna Bay offers magnificent scenery, rolling sands plucked straight from a picture postcard and breathtaking views of the Small Isles. Even dolphins seem taken by its spectacular landscapes and can often be found frolicking in its azure waters.

(c) Moonshadow Yacht Charter

Sandwood Bay

Kinlochbervie, sutherland.

Often called the most beautiful beach in Britain, Sandwood Bay is a striking stretch of pink sand flanked by colossal cliffs and backed by the large dunes of Sandwood Loch. Unreachable by road, it’s also known as Britain’s most remote beach. Standing alone on its dunes, admiring the haunting beauty of the sea stack of Am Buachaille (“the shepherd”) as it stands its ground against the might of the Atlantic Ocean is an unforgettable experience. One of the many reasons you simply #MustSeaScotland !

Land yachting is like an ingenious fusion of motor racing and sailing, done on beautiful sandy beaches all over the UK! Land yachting

Back to Activities

What to expect

A land yacht is a usually three or four-wheeled vehicle for one or two people, with a mast and sail attached. By adjusting the sail to catch the wind, the land yacht is propelled forward, sometimes reaching up to 40mph. Because of the speed they can go and the wind they require, land yachting usually takes place at the beach or over large flat spaces, like airfields. Hopefully, it’ll be quite windy, so remember to wrap up warm with windproof layers. If you’re land yachting at the beach, you shouldn’t end up in the sea, but are best off wearing something waterproof anyway, to guard against spray and wet sand.

What you’ll learn

Low to the ground and carried along by gusty winds, a land yacht can be a thrilling piece of kit, even if it’s a bit scary to ride the first time. By steering the vehicle and adjusting the sail, you begin to build on skills you’ll need in other activities, such as go-karting and sailing. Land yachting is a great chance to try something new, as it’s an unusual combination of rather different skills and activities. It can be a good introduction to the kind of sail control required for small dinghy sailing.

The first mention of a vehicle similar to a land yacht is in China around 500AD. Since then, they’ve changed only a little in their design. You’re most likely to find land yachts racing along the beach, but there were even land yachts used to cross the great plains of America in the 1800s.

Handy hints

  • Bring a camera . Don’t forget to capture the day with some pictures or videos of everyone zipping about in their land yachts.
  • Layers . A warm or windproof layer is essential when driving a land yacht, especially if you’re at the blowy seaside. Even more so if some of your group have to wait, whilst others are having a go.

You must always:

  • Complete a risk assessment
  • Have the right ratios of number of adults to provide suitable  supervision
  • Set up an InTouch process
  • Know what to do in an emergency
  • Share information with parents and carers with an activity information form
  • Get approval from your commissioner

Be safe outdoors:

  • Check the weather forecast

Other activities:

  • Where an activity is not covered by any other rules members must follow rule 9.1 and assess the risk , ensure that members can be kept safe and that all equipment is suitable for its use.

Joint activities with other organisations:

  • This activity can be run jointly with Girlguiding .
  • This activity can be run with other organisations .

This activity can be led by you or someone else in Scouts

You can go to a centre or use an activity leader who is not part of scouting:.

The provider must have public liability insurance.

Piloting a land yacht is quite a different experience to what you might get from other activities. Congratulations on giving it a go and trying something new! Land yachting is a hybrid activity that takes part of one mode of transport and combines it with another. What other examples of this can you think of? What new ones could you invent? How might helicopter football work? Do you think you could replace all cars with land yachts?

Trying something new, especially something that involves speed, takes courage. The group should celebrate everyone taking part and encourage one another to try more new adventures like this one.

Change the level of challenge

Some providers may have games for you to try, once you’re comfortable controlling the land yacht. These might include slalom or obstacle courses, or drawing in the sand with your tire tracks

Make it accessible

Land yachting can often be adapted so more people can give it a go. Many centres have facilities that cater for people with additional needs and experienced instructors to help everyone achieve their goals. Get in touch with your local provider to chat through the needs of people in your group. Make sure you give them plenty of notice.

All Scout activities should be inclusive and accessible.

This activity counts towards

Scouts Adventure Challenge Award

Take it further.

If you enjoyed wheeling about on a land yacht, have a go at go karting or a driving experience . If you enjoyed using wind power and admiring the sea views, why not try sailing?

Youth shaped guidance

Encourage anyone that has tried land yachting before to support those feeling nervous or unsure, and to share their skills with the group. They could help to introduce and explain the activity in a meeting before the visit.

Leaders and helpers should encourage young people to speak up and talk to their provider about what they’re most excited about and how they’d like to be challenged on the day.

Yachting Scotland

sand yachting in Brittany

  • Test sand yachting in Brittany

In the landscapes of our beautiful Brittany , there's nothing like an outing to the open sea to oxygenate the mind... And if we added a pinch of thrills? Let's swap our swimsuit for a completely different outfit: we're off for a morning of sand yachting initiation!

Download our travel diary

How to do sand yachting?

To practice this sliding sport, nothing could be simpler: all you need is a little wind (which comes from the sea), a low tide and a great desire for adrenaline!

Direction the sailing school where the instructor welcomes us to explain how the machine works. The technique to start? Imagine that we have a bicycle handlebar... To handle with the feet! To move forward and master the speed, he explains the vocabulary words to remember: “trim the sail”  means pulling on the sail; “shock the sail”  means to release the sail. How to stop? We asked him and here is his answer: the sand yacht has no brakes! The instructor reassures us and shows us that the sand yacht stops as soon as we face the wind! We put on our helmets, it's up to us!

  • Check if the wind comes from the open sea: it will not be cut off by the monuments and will remain stable
  • Handles like a bicycle: the feet direct the direction, the arms regulate the speed
  • To slow down: lower the sail
  • To speed up: tuck in the sail
  • To stop: face the wind

Discover the sensations of sand yachting

Sitting at ground level, each on his own machine, we begin our first sand yachting session in Brittany! We remember the instructor's precious instructions and let our racing car glide along the Brittany coast. The least we can say is that the sensations are not long in coming! The sand yacht accelerates slowly (with a few jerks, lack of control on the first try of course), but after only a few minutes, the speed begins to stabilize little by little.

If we had to describe our sensations? Certainly the same as those we can find in karting, but with the sound of the waves replacing that of the engine: a real pleasure!

  • Sand yachting is a great water activity if you're looking for adrenaline
  • The average speed of the sand yacht is 60km/h. The more seasoned can drive up to 100km/h!

sand yachting scotland

Test sand yachting in Brittany: for whom?

In Brittany as elsewhere, the practice of sand yachting is accessible from an early age! In general, the first sessions can be given from 6-7 years old, when children are able to dissociate the movements of the arms and legs.

For the great beginners, we try to favor the days when there is little wind, in order to start gently. Great fans of speed, tricks and skids will have a great time on days with strong winds!

  • Sand yachting is recommended from around 6-7 years old (ask sailing schools)
  • It is possible to do initiation sessions for children and adults: a great opportunity to go out to the water's edge with the family!
  • For complete beginners, it is recommended to test the sand yacht on a “light wind” day.

SCOTLAND AND HEBRIDES

Scotland’s west coast has as big a reputation for its wide variety of weather and strong tides as it does for its breath-taking beauty. with such stark contrasts in the weather and sailing conditions all part of the charm, it is easy to be put off..

But this stunning area of the UK offers some of the finest sailing in the world. Protected cruising grounds are set at the heart of some of the most spectacular scenery, and while careful planning is essential, help and advice is plentiful with numerous guides and suggested itineraries available for charters to make the most of your time there.

Tarbert Outer Hebrides Scotland

Islay and Gigha

Islay is a must-visit destination - if not for its beauty, then at least for the many fine whisky distilleries that have been producing scotch for hundreds of years. even though it is only 25 miles long, nine active distilleries are producing some of the finest single malts known to mankind..

There are plenty of opportunities to visit the distilleries (where you will receive a warm welcome) and a variety of tours are available. The main harbour is Port Ellen, which makes the perfect base to explore this famous island and there are several anchorages along Islay’s south coast.

Gigha is a tiny yet super-hospitable island of Gigha. This beautiful place is surrounded by turquoise seas and fringed with white sand beaches. Since 2002, it has been owned by the community, which explains the warm welcome. Gigha is only 7 miles long and a mile and a half wide, yet it boasts its very own Michelin recommended Boathouse Restauran t. There are great walks with stunning views and awesome sunsets, not to mention a challenging nine-hole course for the keen golfer. You will find the most popular anchorage in Ardminish Bay.

The Scottish Hebrides were made for exploring by sailboat. Offering a rare chance to explore some of Britain’s most inaccessible wilderness alongside rugged mountains and glittering lochs, the magic of this area won’t be lost on you as you cruise through stunning gold-sand beaches, craggy inlets and picturesque seaside towns. Friendly locals will help to make it the trip of a lifetime.

There is much-undisturbed wildlife, set against an enticingly rugged and tranquil backdrop. While sailing here you may spot dolphins, seals, whales and basking sharks. Bird watchers will also delight in puffins, oystercatchers, fulmars and shags all native to this area. The Inner western coast offers fjord-like lochs to glide through. The Outer Hebrides is virtually untouched – even at the height of summer, the seas are still blissfully quiet.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Guide to Scotland

Breathtaking, distinctive and truly exhilarating

Offering dramatic scenery, gorgeous anchorages and a remarkable history, Scotland is home to some of the most unique and beautiful yachting grounds in the world. Enjoy cruising amid the wild, romantic beauty of the Western isles and immerse yourself in some of the most unspoilt scenery that the United Kingdom  has to offer.

The perfect place to adventure and relax, there is a mythical quality enriched by Scotland’s striking west coast, beautiful cities, lochs and castles. Scotland’s charm is also in its picturesque rolling landscape and centuries of history, guests have the opportunity to take a scenic walk through the fascinating hills or feast their eyes on the incredible vistas from their very own superyacht rental. In the Hebrides you will find towering highland mountain scenes as well as pristine villages around protected harbors which is perfect for any charter vacation.

Famously an incredibly tranquil place to sail, Scotland is also fantastic for adventure and wildlife enthusiasts. Along the dramatic coastline, the area is teeming with wildlife in the water from porpoises, seals, dolphins and, if you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of orca and minke whales. On land, you will find wild stags roaming through the wilderness as well as an abundance of wild birds from the Scottish crossbill and puffins to sea eagles circling overhead.

A popular yacht charter base is the beautiful and unique Oban, the gateway town of the Hebrides. From here, guests can head around the northern tip of Mull where you can explore the entirely volcanic island of Stiffa which has been completely uninhabited since the 17th century. From sea caves to century old Abbeys, the north of Scotland has plenty of interesting sites to keep all guests on a luxury yacht charter  entertained.

Sailing South you will find the isle of Jura where guests can enjoy more untouched scenery and glacial beaches, most of which are inaccessible except by boat. Popular activities here include heli-fishing on the numerous hill lochs, salmon fishing and deer-stalking which can all be completed just a stone’s throw from your yacht.

Scotland also boasts incredible golf courses and whisky tours for any connoisseurs who would like to experience how it all began. Three of the world’s iconic whisky names are found on the Scottish isle of Islay: Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroig and guests can enjoy private tours and tastings at all three. Another popular activity visitors can embark on during their vacation is to play golf at the renowned Machrie. As one of Scotland’s most highly acclaimed courses offering 18-hole championship links for golfers of all abilities and ages to enjoy.

Filled with mesmerizing scenery, outstanding and unique activities and picture-perfect vistas, a superyacht charter around Scotland does not disappoint. If you are interested in a private crewed yachting vacation in this region, start planning your next vacation with a recommended yacht charter broker today.

TOP 5 LOCHS TO SAIL IN SCOTLAND

Scottish sea lochs are particularly impressive because they offer a really heady mix of dramatic scenery and wildlife as well as being close to interesting towns and villages.

January 23rd, 2018

The Scottish coast is the ultimate playground for sailors. There are lochs and anchorages galore to explore. Some of the Scottish sea lochs are particularly impressive because they offer a really heady mix of dramatic scenery and wildlife as well as being close to interesting towns and villages. You can find sea lochs up and down the west coast, so it’s been tricky to narrow the list down to our favourite five, but here they are:

1. Loch Fyne

Loch Fyne is Scotland’s longest sea loch. Like all Scottish sea lochs, it is special because of its wonderful scenery. From here you’ll see the beautiful Arrochar Alps, a collection of mountains, popular with walkers and climbers. There’s also picturesque Inveraray – with its stunning Scottish Castle, which is home to the Duke and Duchess of Argyll. The area is renowned for its seafood, with the ever-popular Loch Fyne Oyster bar further along the loch at Cairndow. (You will need to book ahead!). Loch Fyne is also famous for its wildlife – there are otters, seals and even dolphins living in and around the loch. On the western edge of Loch Fyne, you’ll find the Crinan Canal – linking Loch Fyne and Ardrishaig with the sound of Jura. There are fifteen locks along this canal - peppered with good pubs and hotels. Enjoy!

2. Loch Sunart

The west highland loch is situated in the Ardrnamurchan peninsula. It runs from Strontian to the most westerly point of the British Mainland. Loch Sunart also offers some wonderful wildlife spotting opportunities – including otters and perhaps even sea eagles. If you go here, then there are some wonderful other lochs to explore whilst you are in the area, too. Read on!

3. Loch Linnhe

Further along the west coast is Loch Linnhe. Fort William sits on the banks of Loch Linnhe – and if you look up, you’ll see Britain’s tallest mountain – Ben Nevis. If the conditions are right, you might even want to spend a day climbing the Ben. If you are a serious climber, then there are numerous Munros close to the Loch. Follow the Loch south and then east at the Ballachulish Bridge to head for the villages of Ballachulish and Glencoe – two beautiful and picturesque settlements, surrounded by dramatic mountains, and steeped in Highland history. Sail south along Loch Linnhe towards Oban and the gateway to the Isles. En route you’ll pass Port Appin and the wonderful Castle Stalker – or you could sail to the connecting sea loch, Loch Etive – a remote and beautiful area, deep in mountainous terrain.

4. Loch Duich

Further north in the Skye and Lochalsh area is Loch Duich, it’s here you’ll see the famous Eilean Donan Castle –one of the most photographed buildings in Scotland. It’s situation where Loch Duich, Loch Alsh and Loch Long meet, and definitely worth a visit. Loch Duich is right in the middle of a rugged, beautiful and unspoiled part of the country. Popular with hill walkers given its proximity to the five sisters of Kintail mountain range, and with nature lovers – since it’s the perfect host for otters and eagles.

5. Loch Carron

Further north again is Loch Carron, on the shores of the beautiful villages of Lochcarron and Plockton. Plockton has the appeal of a seaside village – there are even palm trees thriving along the shoreline. You’ll also find wonderful inns and pubs serving locally caught seafood, as well as art galleries, traditional highland hospitality and stunning views.
