Nominees announced for Queensland Yachting Awards

The opportunity to recognise the achievements or contribution of a club member has generated an outstanding list of nominations for this year’s Queensland Yachting (YQ) Awards.

The 20th annual awards recognise sailors, coaches, volunteers and clubs across ten categories – Male, Female, Junior, Youth, Offshore, Outstanding Services, Official, Instructor, Coach and Club, during the year July 2014 to June 2015.

YQ Executive Officer, Ben Callard, said of the 51 Queensland clubs, 11 are represented. “We are very pleased with the number of nominations. It’s a big increase on last year.

“The quality of candidates are very high. I know quite a few of the nominees. It is excellent to see some news names as well which is a sign there is a lot of depth and talent around the state.”

Four new awards have added to the list and there has been a change in how the state awards link up with the Yachting Australia (YA) annual national awards. “The winners of the Club, Official, Instructor and Coach of the Year awards are automatically nominated for the YA awards. These are new categories for Queensland.

“We are also going to nominate all other state winners for the relevant national award,” Callard said.

The nominations are considered by the nine-member YQ Board who represent all regions of the state, with the votes recorded anonymously and counted by the YQ staff. “A lot of the votes were very close. There were few cases where there was a big margin where someone was a stand-out winner,” Callard added.

This is home to the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest reef eco-system, offering unparalleled opportunities for sublime cruising and thrilling underwater discovery. Covering an area seven times larger than the United Kingdom, the possibilities in Queensland for superyacht charters are immense.

While the Great Barrier Reef stands out as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Queensland is also blessed with vibrant city experiences and sensational rainforest escapades, making this region a truly inexhaustible source of adventure. This is the all-encompassing destination for superyachts, ripe for luxury escapes and supported by world-class superyacht infrastructure. It is no wonder that so many superyachts choose Queensland as their base for exploring the South Pacific.

Great Barrier Reef & Whitsundays

The Great Barrier Reef is Australia’s most precious gift to the world and epitomises the adventurous spirit of superyacht charters. This yachting utopia stretches for 2,300 km along Queensland’s glorious coastline, and boasts over 3,000 individual reef systems and coral cays. For visiting superyachts, the sheer diversity of reefs provides experiences like no other. Divers and snorkelers revel in this underwater Eden, with over 600 types of hard and soft coral to uncover, along with 1,626 different species of fish to encounter.

There is no greater destination for barefoot island-hopping adventures than the Great Barrier Reef. Superyachts provide an opulent base from which to explore 600 continental islands, each glowing with its own unique natural landscape. In the northern region of the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island is a sumptuous luxury resort surrounded by mesmerising natural beauty. Lizard Island is a popular start or end point for a charter through the exhilarating ribbon reefs, with the delightful seaside town of Port Douglas at the other end.

Further south, The Whitsundays are one of the true yachting pleasures of the world, with 74 glorious white-sand islands surrounded by sparkling turquoise waters. This is the pinnacle of beach bliss and laid-back island glamour, where guests can either delve into the awe-inspiring waters or unwind in hedonistic resorts on Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach. The pristine natural surroundings of the Whitsundays offer an idyllic superyacht retreat, though the area is certainly packed full of adrenaline-pumping water sports activities. Some of the most enchanting dive and snorkel sites in Australia are found in the Whitsundays, and so too is the iconic Heart Reef.

City Thrills

Superyachts are welcomed into Queensland’s thriving cities, from the state capital of Brisbane up to the charming city of Cairns. These cities act as phenomenal bases to explore Queensland’s sun-drenched coastline and glistening cruising grounds, and they each offer something spectacularly unique.

Cairns is a major superyacht homeport for the Asia Pacific region, with close proximity to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef but also to the South Pacific islands beyond. Here you will find fantastic superyacht facilities, exquisite restaurants and luxury hotels throughout the city which allow for a seamless transition to land. With no overbearing high-rise buildings, Cairns has the aesthetic of a quaint coastal town and its relaxing atmosphere enables guests to detach from the stresses of the outside world. Cairns offers fascinating on land activities to enhance your experience of Australia, notably the Daintree Rainforest and captivating Aboriginal tours.

In South East Queensland, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are well established as superyacht hotspots. Not only do they boast incredible infrastructure, but the surrounding area is filled with islands and secluded beaches to enjoy. The cosmopolitan city of Brisbane boasts a perfect balance between modern city luxuries and relaxing open green spaces, with an intriguing culture to immerse yourself in. Brisbane has a packed calendar of major sporting events, musical performances and cutting-edge theatre to explore, and there is also plenty of thrilling cruising opportunities in the surrounding area. Moreton Bay is a boating hub adored by locals and international visitors alike, while North Stradbroke and Fraser Islands also provide fabulous retreats where you can embrace the outdoors in a stunning setting.

The Gold Coast presents superyachts with the ideal balance of luxury city amenities and beach glamour. Its renowned tourist hub of Surfers Paradise is dotted with fine dining restaurants and lively bars, many overlooking its immaculate coastline. The southern beaches of the Gold Coast provide a more laid-back, boho atmosphere where surfers flock to make the most of this sublime environment. Behind the glittering sands is an enthralling hinterland, less than an hour from the city. Incredible treks through this undisturbed natural Eden lead to magical waterfalls, providing a splendid contrast after days spent at sea. Along the Spit to the north of the Gold Coast are some of the largest marina facilities in Australia, including Southport Yacht Club – a favourite for visiting superyachts.

Rainforest and Hinterland Adventures

The natural beauty of Queensland certainly doesn’t stop with its kaleidoscopic reef experiences. Cairns is not just a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, but also the UNESCO Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest. The Daintree offers an eclectic mix of activities and encounters, from ATV tours through the rainforest to enlightening Aboriginal tours of the ancient land. Queensland’s strength in diverse experiences is second to none, and exploring the Sunshine State you will feed your hunger for adventure.

The Gold Coast hinterland is teeming with diverse flora and fauna, with Lamington and Springbrook National Parks offering a retreat into a natural paradise. The volcanic landscape of Springbrook is as enthralling as it gets for land-based adventures, characterised by gorges, rocky outcrops and magical waterfalls.

Noosa, on the Sunshine Coast, is Australia’s relaxation capital. This subtropical resort town is known for its spectacular coastal scenery and the beautiful Noosa National Park. In Noosa, you can embrace all things wild as you take in the awe-inspiring scenery and come across native Australian plants and wildlife. Along Noosa’s dramatic headland are the Fairy Pools, natural saltwater pools where visitors can take a plunge into azure waters.

Superyacht Infrastructure

Queensland is a major superyacht hub for the Asia Pacific region, with world-class marina and shipyard facilities which attract superyachts from all over the world. Cairns Marlin Marina and Southport Yacht Club have some of the largest berthing facilities in Australia, while Queensland is also a mecca for refit and maintenance. The marine infrastructure in Queensland makes this an ideal destination for superyachts to stay long-term.

Welcome to the Queensland French Yacht Owners Association

QFYOA runs the annual Beneteau Cup Race and French Yacht Challenge for like minded French Yacht Owners to meet and share cameraderie.

Our next major events are the

2023 SPIRIT MARINE BENETEAU CUP (21&22 October) and the 2023 MOOLOOLABA YACHT BROKERS FRENCH YACHT CHALLENGE (21 & 22 October).

Social events and fun times are the key goal although a good race is always on the cards!

History

The QFYOA (formerly the Queensland Beneteau Owners Group) was set up in 2005 by Beneteau owners Dave Waller (Medina) and Mike Gibson (Curlew) berthed near each other at Raby Bay. They regularly compared notes about all things Beneteau. ‘How do you solve this’? ‘How do you fix that?’ ‘Look how I have done this’ They wanted to meet and share with fellow Beneteau owners, so they decided to form a group with the aim of providing a forum for like minded Beneteau owners.

Their competitive streak saw the  initial Beneteau Cup - and the rest is history.  See the About page for more details.

Based in Manly, our goal is to promote yachting amongst the French yachting fraternity.

Coomera Cup 2023

The Coomera Cup 2023, hosted by Wynnum Manly Radio Model Yacht Club (WMRMYC) at Eagleby, was held over the weekend of the 27th and 28th of May.

Saturday's weather was bright and sunny with variable light winds. The variable winds were a challenge for the PRO, Lindsay Walker, who, together with the boat crew, did a fantastic job, under very trying conditions, of setting fair and competitive courses.

2023 South Queensland DF95 Regatta

This event was the first two-day regatta for DF 95s hosted by the PRYC, which commenced on Saturday, the 25th of March, at Emerald Lakes; some 26 entries were received, and by the start time of 10.00 am, 22 skippers were ready to race. A delay to the start was required as the bright sunny day yielded little to no wind until a very little East to South East breeze started to fill in, requiring a move of the racing area to the eastern side of the lake, hence delaying racing until 10.45 am.

South Queensland Ten Rater Championship at Banora Point

The Twin Towns Club again put on a very successful Regatta for the 10R fleet hosting the South Queensland 10R Championship on April 01. Eight boats crossed the line at the start, and eight boats finished it as well. Even though the numbers were down, the quality of the fleet spread from 1 – 8 places. The officials were also top drawer with probably two of Qld’s premier PROs in Lindsay Walker and Bill Clancy and the state’s top race scorer in Anne Walker—pretty good stuff. The club’s volunteers also did a very professional job with the boat crew, observers, and administrators. The weather was testing all involved in trying to set a course, but, at the end of the day, we had very fair courses, with 16 races completed, getting the 3rd drop, which ultimately proved the difference for the winner.

Victims named after stabbing attack at Sydney's Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre

A composite image of Faraz Tahir, Ashlee Good and Jade Young

A "beautiful", "all round outstanding human", the 25-year-old daughter of a prominent businessman and a Pakistani national who sought refuge in Australia are among the victims of a stabbing attack inside a busy Sydney shopping centre.

Five of the six people confirmed killed by Queensland man Joel Cauchi inside Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday afternoon were women.

NSW Police has indicated it could be "some time" before all victims are identified — but here's what we know about those who died.

Ashlee Good

The first victim to be publicly named was 38-year-old mother Ashlee Good, who was attacked alongside her nine-month-old baby and died later in hospital on Saturday evening.

Her family says the baby is now "doing well" after undergoing hours of emergency surgery.

"Today we are reeling from the terrible loss of Ashlee, a beautiful mother, daughter, sister, partner, friend, all round outstanding human and so much more," Ms Good's family said in a statement on Sunday.

"We appreciate the well-wishes and thoughts of members of the Australian public who have expressed an outpouring of love for Ashlee and our baby girl."

The family paid tribute to NSW Police, Sydney Children's Hospital staff and two men who "held and cared for our baby when Ashlee could not".

Ashlee's father was Kerry Good, a player and former board member for AFL club North Melbourne. The club wore black armbands in honour of Ashlee in its match against Geelong on Sunday.

A floral tribute is seen outside Westfield Bondi Junction

Dawn Singleton

Dawn Singleton has also been confirmed to have died in the attack.

She is the 25-year-old daughter of businessman John "Singo" Singleton.

Ms Singleton's employer, White Fox Boutique, described her "as someone special to us who felt like a family member".

"We are all truly devastated by this loss. Dawn was a sweet, kind-hearted person who had her whole life ahead of her. She was really amazing," the business wrote on social media.

Killcare Surf Lifesaving Club on the NSW Central Coast, which said four generations of the Singletons had been involved with it, also posted a message of support to social media late on Sunday morning.

Faraz Tahir

Faraz Tahir, a 30-year-old Pakistani national who was working as a security guard, has also been identified as a victim.

The Australian Pakistani National Association (APNA) named Mr Tahir as the sole male killed in a post on Facebook on Sunday afternoon.

The APNA said Mr Tahir had moved from Brisbane for work.

"Let us stand together in solidarity, offering support and prayers to those grieving and affected by this heartbreaking loss," the group said in a post on social media.

Ejaz Khan, a solicitor and the president of the Pakistan Australia Association, said the news had rocked the local Pakistani community.

"The community is mourning, and the community is very distressed," he said.

He said another Pakistani man was in hospital in relation to the attack.

While Mr Khan did not know Mr Tahir personally, he said he had been speaking with people who did.

"Faraz was a young man that had a bright future in front of him," he said.

"We have spoken to a few of his friends around — he was a lovely guy, he was very helpful all the time, he was working very hard and studying very hard in order to have a better future in Australia."

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Australia said Mr Tahir sought refuge in Australia after fleeing persecution in Pakistan a year ago.

Jade Young, 47, was identified as another victim by NSW Police on Sunday afternoon.

The Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club in Sydney's eastern suburbs, where Ms Young was a member, cancelled an event scheduled for Sunday evening.

Members were notified of her death earlier in the day.

"This is and will be a difficult time for the community, and we encourage you to seek support from family, friends, fellow Club members or to speak to your GP to assist you in processing this tragedy," the club wrote on Facebook.

"We are here to support the community, and our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone affected."

Pikria Darchia

Pikria Darchia was fatally stabbed on saturday april 13 2024 at westfield bondi junction

This evening NSW Police identified 55-year-old Pikri Darchia as another one of the five female victims.

According to Ms Darchia's LinkedIn profile, she was an artist/designer who studied business administration at Sydney TAFE and could speak three languages: English, Russian and Georgian.

She also finished a degree in performance art at the Tbilisi State Academy of Art in Georgia.

What about the others?

Police said earlier on Sunday that it could be "some time" before all victims were publicly identified.

Two of the victims have no family in Australia and authorities have been trying to contact their families.

Twelve people were also hospitalised for injuries sustained in the attack, with one subsequently discharged.
