ALPE ADRIA JET SKI TOUR

ALPE ADRIA JET SKI TOUR

Dear Aquabike Pilots,

We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to inform you about an important update regarding the upcoming Aquabike race in Osijek, originally scheduled for July 22, 2023. Due to unforeseen circumstances related to the pilots who have been loyal members of our tour for the past 20 years and their respective national federation, we have made the decision to reschedule the race to August 26, 2023.

The rescheduling of the race is necessary due to the recent developments surrounding the actions of the aforementioned national federation, which have led to a disregard for EU laws and the freedom of movement of its residents. We deeply regret the discriminatory treatment towards Croatia, its pilots, and organizers. However, we remain committed to upholding the integrity and fairness of the Alpe Adria Tour.

The decision to postpone the race has not been taken lightly. We understand the inconvenience this may cause for you, and we apologize for any disruption to your plans. We assure you that our primary concern is the well-being and satisfaction of all participants, and we believe that rescheduling the event is the best course of action under the circumstances.

We will work closely with the local authorities, partners, and stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition to the new date. Rest assured that the race in Osijek on August 26, 2023, will continue to provide an exciting and competitive experience for all participants.

We kindly request your understanding and flexibility during this challenging time. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team. We value your continued support and commitment to the Alpe Adria Tour, and we look forward to welcoming you in Osijek for the rescheduled race.

Thank you for your understanding.

Jet ski sports during his 20 years of activity in this part of Europe, has attracted many enthusiasts, but also promoted a new kind of entertainment in ALPE ADRIA REGION and then throughout Europe.

Over the years, jet skis become more technologically advanced, have introduced a new (four-stroke) engines. Consequently the prices of vessels become higher and heavier accessible to customers. With good "support“ of the crisis, which resulted in smaller sales of the new units, ....meaning less competitors. Weaker competition. But the desire remained the same.

Through cross-section of current and potential staff, we set two directions of development of jet sport in this 2013th, which will be through the “ALPE ADRIA TOUR 2013" to unite and promote the fulfillment of their desires and pleasures.

SPORTS COMPETITION & RECREATIONAL AMATEUR: Our desire is that through these two shots jet ski athletes to attract a wider mass companions, supporters and spectators who come from their work, familial or friendly milieu, and perhaps so far have not been into any sort of contact with this branch of motor boating. What exactly with this concept of competition has no causal connection with the sport itself and its industry, but has great effect of interest and results

20 great things to do in Osijek

The clean, green environment of Osijek is little-known to tourists, its county of Slavonija and Baranja the country's gastronomic centre

Located in the far east of Croatia , sharing borders with Hungary, Serbia and Bosnia, Osijek, the capital of Slavonia, is frequently overlooked by tourists. Arguably the home of Croatia’s friendliest hosts and some of the finest examples of Austro-Hungarian cuisine in the country (Osijek majors in grilled meats and game, and smoky, slow-cooked stews), the distinct delights of Croatia's fourth-largest city can be enjoyed year-round. It's broader region of Slavonia is also responsible for producing some of Croatia's best delicacies , such as Slavonian kulen and Slavonian honey . The trickle-down tourism from Croatia’s coastal resorts has yet to be properly be felt in Osijek – meaning that, for now, you will be drinking and dancing with the locals.

The best things to do in Osijek

Go swimming!

1.  Go swimming!

Osijek may not have the sea, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy swimming. In summer months, the open air Copacabana complex is teeming with people. Pay ten kuna and stay for as long as you like, taking advantage of multiple pools (although they can be very busy). Some locals prefer to stay immediately outside, swimming in the cool and refreshing Drava river. Be aware, this river has strong currents, so this option is only for strong swimmers and they are advised to stay near the banks. With ten pools and more available at renowned nearby spa Bizovac Toplice , their free transfers should also be taken advantage of.

See the pedestrian bridge

2.  See the pedestrian bridge

There are three bridges across the expanse of the river Drava in Osijek. The rail bridge and road bridge are pretty unremarkable, but the pedestrian bridge is one of Osijek's most recognisable landmarks and is much loved in the city. Opened in the 1980s, this beautiful suspension bridge is the most popular link between the river's two sides and is used by walkers throughout the daytime and evening. At night it is brilliantly lit in an ever changing spectrum of lights. Before you visit, read up about the fascinating seven kilometre long Suleiman Bridge that once stood here.

Visit the cathedral

3.  Visit the cathedral

Osijek's cathedral is the tallest building in Croatia outside of Zagreb and boasts fantastic neo-Gothic ornamentation. Gargoyles grimace down at you as you enter, but it's worth doing so. On particularly hot days, the church's thick walls can offer the best escape from the blistering sun. Damaged heavily during the war in 1991, its restoration was a priority for the city and occurred at a speed that perhaps shames the perpetual scaffolding visible on Zagreb's cathedral (or indeed the snail's pace of restoration at Osijek's Tvrđa). If you're a fan of impressive churches, you also perhaps shouldn't miss the cathedral in Đakovo, some 50km to the south west of Osijek. It's one of Croatia's largest.

Go to the zoo

4.  Go to the zoo

Osijek's zoo is located on the opposite side of the Drava river from the bustle and noise of the city, making it the perfect place for its inhabitants and visitors to relax. They do so inside the largest open space dedicated to animals in all of Croatia's zoos, which aims to provide animals with as much of their natural habitat as possible. Bison, camels, wolves, antelope, goats, bears, monkeys, big cats, birds, giraffe and meerkats are just some of the 80 species you will find across the zoo, its aquarium and terrarium.

Walk down the riva

5.  Walk down the riva

Mediterranean and Adriatic rivas are a town's most popular walking space, where you can sit in a cafe or bar and watch the world pass by. Though inland, Osijek does not miss out on having a riva. On the contrary, it has Croatia's best. Osijek's promenade stretches down both sides of the river Drava for several kilometres. On the city side, you'll see families and couples taking an early evening stroll, rollerbladers and bicyclists. The opposite side, which is closer to wild nature, is more commonly used by joggers or youths wishing to escape prying eyes. The city side is a particularly picturesque walk, taking in most of Osijek's best sights including the old city walls and pedestrian footbridge.

Visit the catacombs

6.  Visit the catacombs

Osijek is nothing if not a city of intrigue. Previously ruled by Turkish, Austro-Hungarian and Roman authorities, its architecture is often a bewildering jumble collated over many eras. Rumours persist that a whole network of tunnels pass through the city, reaching well into Baranja county. Were these last utilised secretly by occupying Nazi forces, as local rumour goes? Partial evidence of Osijek's underground network can be found in Tvrđa. The catacombs on the opposite side of the river are another intriguing, forgotten space, providing a unique backdrop on some summer nights to music parties and festivals. Just up and to the left of these is a modern area of outdoor worship, which is well worth a look.

Visit the centre

7.  Visit the centre

Restricted by the river, Osijek's expansion has been elongated. This has resulted in the city having three centres. The easterly Donji Grad, a marketplace and social hub, isn't notable for visitors. Central is the old town centre, Tvrđa and to the west, the city centre in Gornji Grad. Out of town shopping centres have sadly leeched a lot of the life from here, but it's worth a look. Kapucinska feels like a mini version of Zagreb's famous Ilica. It opens out onto trg Ante Starčevića which boasts, like the adjoining Županijska, some fine Austro-Hungarian architecture. Sadly, much of it in the square is blighted by gaudy, big brand advertising hoardings. Zagreb learned a few years ago not to tarnish the vista of its central square with such cheapness. Hopefully Osijek will be next.

Eat the traditional food of Slavonija

8.  Eat the traditional food of Slavonija

Slavonia Baranja is Croatia's gastronomic centre, its produce famous throughout Europe. Taking influence from Hungary, Slavonia offers the best Kulen (a low fat, paprika and garlic pork sausage) plus much of the premium fruit and veg on plates at exclusive seaside restaurants. Eat the spicy fish paprikaš as a soup first, then take on the fish, as it has many bones. Perklet is a thick stew best made with strong beef or venison flavours. Arguably Croatia's best dish, Čobanac is a spicy stew that's best sampled with wild meats like boar and venison. Try them at Osijek's Slavonska Kuća , Kod Ruže , Vrata Baranje or Čarda kod Baranjca , in Bilje at Ugostiteljski Obrt Varga or out of town at Citadela or Darócz in Vardarac or Didin Konak in Kopačevo.

Eat Slavonska pizza

9.  Eat Slavonska pizza

Pineapple on pizza may be scoffed at, but only a fool would complain about non traditional pizza toppings after trying Slavonska pizza (no, it doesn't have pineapple). This meat extravaganza is loved by those in the know all over Croatia, nowhere more so than its birthplace of Slavonia. With ham, bacon and paprika spiced sausage, like much continental Balkan food, this is a veritable festival of pig. Usually onions, mushrooms and a few chilli peppers also appear, sometimes sour cream too, but for a special treat ask for an egg on top. The three best in Osijek are made by Lipov Hlad , Pizzeria Novi Saloon and Rustika , the latter, a charming and popular restaurant, being the nicest place to eat it at (all three do home delivery).

Try Croatia's greatest wines

10.  Try Croatia's greatest wines

The word is out about Croatian wine, but you're more likely to hear about their reds. You'll pay a minimum of 70kn, usually more like 100kn, for a really nice bottle of Croatian red. But, if you know what to look for, a fantastic bottle of Croatian white wine can cost as little as 30 or 35kn. These brilliant bargains are usually from Slavonia, places like Đakovo and Orahovica in particular. Get to grips with the best Croatian red and white wines in Osijek at the casual Vinska Mušica , with its simple outdoor area, the overtly posh Muzej Okusa or the simple Vinoteka Vinita . All have excellent wines available by the glass.

Drink some of Croatia's best beer

11.  Drink some of Croatia's best beer

First produced in 1697, Osijek made Osječko is the first Croatian beer ever produced and their lager is the best of all standard beers in Croatia. Their black beer and lemon is also the country's best radler by a long, long way. Domestic and other craft beer options have exploded in Croatia compared to the same old menu of lagers available just 10 years ago. Many places now have their own small breweries and Osijek is no exception. Osijek's locally brewed Beckers is easily one of Croatia's best pale ales. General Von Beckers pub on Tvrđa is a great (and cheap) place to try it. Osijek's other best places to drink craft beer are Beertija , Gajba , Pivnica Runda , Podrumčić and the city's annual Craft Beer Festival , a major date in the city's calendar.

Go and see some live music

12.  Go and see some live music

Some regard Osijek's music scene as tame compared to earlier years, but it still thrives, not least to service the city's sizeable university population. At the end of term, look out for free concerts around the campuses, or in the outdoor areas Vega and Kazamat at Tvrđa. Extreme sport event Pannonian Challenge and Osijek's Days Of Wine usually have good music programmes here. 14 year old UFO Festival does a great job, although some international guests wouldn't go amiss. You can hear local rock acts weekly at places like Cadillac , Hir and sometimes Exit and Slavonia's Tamburaška folk music at Fort Pub . Try and catch young Tamburaši Veritas there on a Thursday night, they're the best.

Walk a trail of statues and monuments

13.  Walk a trail of statues and monuments

Start at Red Fićo, a small red car overcoming a tank at the intersection of Trpimira and Vukovarska. The nearby, conjoined parks of kings Držislav and Petar Krešimir hold the vivid 'Dying Soldier' by Robert Frangeš-Mihanović, plus the modern, mother and child and Miroslav Krleža statues. The first statue outside Spain depicting Pablo Picasso is near the riva. Statues of Croatian violinist Franjo Krežma, president Franjo Tuđman and writer Augusto Cesarcu occur on the walk between Kapucinska and the huge Monument to Croatian War Veterans at the end of trg Slobode. The main man stands imposing in Ante Starčević square, a modern seating sculpture just to his side. There are more besides, such as the Sakuntala and sphinx near the centre's cinema and Mother Of Cats too.

Go to Osijek's 100 year old city centre cinema

14.  Go to Osijek's 100 year old city centre cinema

Much of Osijek's youth, like their clothes-shopping parents, prefer to go to out of town shopping centres where the multiplex cinema chain can be found. Such is the drain of life from the city centre by such attractions that Osijek's Cinema Europa no longer shows films, although the occasional concert is held there. But one city centre cinema remains and there's a real charm to visiting the art deco-like building of Cinema Urania . The cinema is comfortable, it's no problem to take your own food and drinks and they show all the recent blockbusters as well as boasting a well considered art house and foreign language selection.

Tvrđa; Osijek's picturesque social hub

15.  Tvrđa; Osijek's picturesque social hub

Although not very large, Tvrđa is one of the most charming city centres in Croatia and a must see both by day and by night. The citadel is protected on three sides by green areas and bordered on the fourth by the river Drava. Tvrđa, Osijek's old town, is the best preserved and largest ensemble of Baroque buildings in Croatia. Highlights to see in the daytime include its museums and St. Michael's Church. Do its twin towers still carry a flavour of the Mosque on whose foundations it is built? In summer sit under one of the hundreds of sun shaded chairs in the central square, drinking coffee alongside locals. At night, Tvrđa becomes even more alive as it holds many of Osijek's best bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

Visit the city walls

16.  Visit the city walls

At the far end of Tvrđa, alongside the river Drava, are the old city walls of Osijek. This Hapsburg fort, which was the largest and most advanced on the border with the Ottoman Empire, is an extremely impressive sight from the banks of the river. In summer evenings, friendly youths sit atop the walls drinking beer, so daytime visits are recommended if you want to walk soberly across the architecture yourself. Nightclub Outside is on one of the other walls, a superb location. The impressive Vodena vrata (water gate) is the only one which survives from the four that were originally built and leads now to a recently renovated area with a moat. The surrounding areas have also been promised a much needed renovation, although progress appears to be quite slow.

Stay up late and party

17.  Stay up late and party

Osijek has a lot of great bars, many already mentioned. Lots stay open late at weekends. Dali stays open until 3am every night and is lovely in summer when the (great) service and seating move outside. Exit in Tvrđa is an alternative bar with loud DJs and a nice, young crowd who sometimes dance. Nightclubs Q-Club , Rockatiki and Kaos , all play turbofolk, the two latter venues to a younger, less flashy crowd. Tufna is the world's most frustrating club; you'll wonder how a club with three floors can have such bad music on each. It is very popular with young people. Epic is perhaps the most credible, holding specialist monthly nights of house, techno and hip hop although Oxygene is also good; their events range from live jazz to techno.

Visit Slama Land Art

18.  Visit Slama Land Art

Slama Land Art , a multi purpose space, located at Kamila Firingera 3 in Tvrđa, offers a genuine reflection of the proletarian art and culture of Osijek. They host jazz evenings, art exhibitions, daytime art classes and art picnics, with grass sculptures made by in-house events curator Nikola Faller. It is to his credit and that of sympathetic members of the local council that this vibrant and unique arts space exists. Look out for the live music Slamanje events, curated by Osijek band Harvo Jay , which invites bands from all over Croatia and further still. The young crowd at these events is great and Harvo Jay, who regularly play, are certainly one of Croatia's current best alternative rock bands.

Rent a bicycle

19.  Rent a bicycle

Osijek is a very green city, its air fresh and clean. You can navigate much of Osijek using tree lined footpaths and parks, barely spending time along a road. And the best way to do so is by bicycle. Osijek, like the rest of Slavonia, is almost completely flat, meaning cyclists of any ability can tackle the town. As well as the parks, there are clearly designated cycle paths over much of the city. Bicycle is also one of the best ways to cover the extended routes on either side of the river Drava

Hop across the border

20.  Hop across the border

Osijek is almost equidistant to the borders of Serbia, Hungary and Bosnia. The former two are particularly close, making day trips more than viable. Spend the day in Novi Sad, Serbia's second largest city, taking in the Petrovaradin Fortress above the river Danube. The city has a similar Austro-Hungarian feel to Osijek, but is much larger. Alternatively, cross the border to Hungary and visit a hot spa, the city of Pécs or sample their different cuisine. Tenkes Csárda , north of Harkány, is a countryside Hungarian restaurant. Try the whole corn-fed goose liver (ethical foie gras) in a rich onion and paprika sauce with rustic bread for a meal you won't forget. If you're lucky, musicians playing traditional folk instruments such as the cimbalom will be present.

Many travelers think of Croatia solely for its stunning Adriatic Seaside and hundreds of idyllic Dalmatian Islands , looking inland only as far as Plitvice Lakes or the capital city, Zagreb . The eastern region of Slavonia, including Osijek and Baranja, are destinations that go unnoticed.

We, too, overlooked Slavonia until we heard whispers of culinary delights and small production wineries coming from the region. (OK, to be honest, mostly it was the tales of wine that garnered our attention.) The more we learned, the more we were intrigued and we knew we had to visit Osijek, Croatia.

A Brief History Of Osijek, Croatia

Cannons at Tvrda Citadel in Osijek, Croatia

The city of Osijek – the fourth largest city in Croatia with a population of 108,000 – lies in the eastern portion of the Slavonia region near the borders of Hungary and Serbia. The first mention of the city dates to the year 1196, but people had been living on the land for centuries before that time. Situated along the Drava River just upstream from the Drava-Danube confluence, Osijek was built on slightly elevated terrain, safely above the floodplain.

In the Middle Ages, the city thrived, but fell to the Ottoman Empire in the 16 th century. Under Habsburg rule in the 17 th century, the city was rebuilt in the Baroque style. By the 19 th century, the city was flourishing again. However, in 1991, when Croatia declared independence, Osijek came under the attack of the Yugoslav People’s Army, which resulted in hundreds of casualties, heavy damage to the city and residents fleeing the region.

Osijek still bears scars from the war and aftermath: pockmarks dot the sides of structures, mortar blasts blemish sidewalks and poignant monuments have been constructed in remembrance. Many of the buildings on the oldest streets in the city have been neglected, evidenced by peeling paint and crumbling facades, as more pressing city projects have taken precedence. City center store spaces sit empty; the once prime real estate waiting for an opportunistic buyer to take interest.

Rather than feeling despondent, however, we sensed a subtle buzz of energy in the city. Forward-thinking and passionate residents are working to bring Osijek back to its former splendor. Throughout the city, historic buildings are getting a facelift, fresh-concept cafes and restaurants are breathing new life into once abandoned spaces and events are aimed at community involvement and participation.

Inspired To Visit Osijek, Croatia

View of Osijek, Croatia on the Drava River

The Advent festival was precisely the reason we chose the wintertime to visit Osijek. After attending Advent in Zagreb , we were keen to see how other parts of the country celebrate the Christmas season. At first, we thought it might be unfair to compare Zagreb’s large-scale, award-winning festival to other Christmas fairs, but it turned out no comparison was necessary. Advent in Osijek offered something completely different from Zagreb: a friendly community event steeped in rich cultural traditions.

During our visit, Advent in Osijek was a nightly affair, but our days were filled with exploration – from sightseeing in the city to discovering natural landscapes throughout the region. Daily, we embarked on culinary expeditions of local fare. With so much to experience, we wonder why it took us so long to visit Osijek, Croatia…and we have a suspicion there will be a return trip for us in the future.

Let’s get started with our list of the Best Things to do in Osijek, Croatia!

#1 Slavonian Gastronomy

Catfish stew and homemade pasta at Josic Winery

Let’s get right to it: the food offering in Osijek is off the charts. From hearty soups to roasted game to cured meats and tasty pastas, the common ingredients are homemade and fresh. The regional specialty is River Fish Stew, which hardly sounds appetizing, but after one bite, it doesn’t matter what it is called…it is delicious. Paprika is used to flavor just about everything; the popular zingy spice is made locally from red peppers that are air-dried and ground into powder.

Homemade meat and cheeses at Orlov Put Eco Farm near Osijek, Croatia

With wide open spaces, rushing rivers and nutrient-rich soil, clean eating isn’t a trendy new concept, but a traditional way of life in Osijek. In more recent years, modern farming may have derailed that idea, but many local food producers are still intent on only promoting naturally-raised food, free from enhancements, chemicals and preservatives.

Just five miles from Osijek, in the town of Bilje, eco farm Orlov Put is a prime example; at their organic farm they only serve food that they grow or raise on their own property.

Even within the Osijek city limits we were able to get a taste of ‘farm to table.’ We shopped at the Green Market, buying locally-grown, in-season produce…then we delivered the food to Chef Nenad Komes to turn our haul into a magnificent meal.

In The Black Room, which is part of Komes’ five-piece restaurant/café/shop/hostel conglomerate, he brilliantly concocted a slightly-sweet beef goulash and fresh vegetable feast.

Where and What We Ate in Osijek and Baranja Region

Open fire cooking at Josic Winery near Osijek, Croatia

  • Restaurant Club Waldinger – Upscale environment, yet affordable prices. We ate : tender beef shanks with homemade pasta.
  • Ruza –  Cozy space with boisterous live traditional music. We ate : Slavonska plata (local meats and cheeses) and carpacio smud (local fish) for starters, followed by punjena pljeskavica (grilled meat stuffed with ham and cheese) and perkelt riblja (fish stew) for mains.
  • American Bar Dollar – Contemporary and urban. We ate : beefsteak tartar, juicy burgers and the American Dollar Plate (ribs, wings, onion rings, chicken strips, fries and taquitos).
  • Josic – Red-brick wine cellar with open kitchen. We ate : fried frog legs, fish with paprika, savory roasted duck, goulash, catfish stew on a bed of homemade pasta with cheese and bacon.
  • Orlov Put –  Rustic farm dining. We ate : fresh-made goat cheese, sausage, bacon, fall-off-the-bone roasted pork in vegetable sauce, roasted turkey baked over layers of pasta, and jams and breads. *As if the meal wasn’t enough, we were also invited to tour the farm and take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the countryside to a nearby village during our visit.
  • The Black Room (Privately prepared meal with Chef Nenad Komes from American Bar Dollar ) – Shabby chic and intimate. We ate : charcuterie, grilled apples, apricot beef goulash, brussel sprouts and salad. *Watch: ‘Market to Table.’
  • Eating at Advent in Osijek  – The food options are abundant at Advent in Osijek, but we particularly liked  Dobro for their platters of Mediterranean-style charcuterie and meat wrapped breadstick. We also tried festival favorite Langosica , a Hungarian-style, deep-fried flatbread topped with sour cream and garlic.

#2 City Sights in Osijek, Croatia

Bell tower of Co-Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul in Osijek, Croatia

Given the city of Osijek’s long history, there’s a variety of sights. Walking around the city center, we were enthralled by the architecture, museums, historic buildings, city parks and monuments. (Map below.)

Pedestrain Bridge over Drava River in Osijek, Croatia

A. Museum of Slavonia (Muzej Slavonije) – The museum was founded in 1877 and is the largest general-type museum in Croatia. Centrally located in the City Magistrate building, which was built in 1702, the interesting and informational museum displays tell the history of the city and region.

B. Museum of Archeology (Arheoloski Muzej Osijek) – Housed in the Main Guard Building adjacent to the Magistrate building, the museum exhibits artifacts from the area’s early history and the Middle Ages. The Museum of Archeology is part of the Museum of Slavonia.

C. Citadel or Fortress (Tvrda) – Tvrda was built between 1693 and 1735 by the Habsburgs in the Baroque style. In addition to the eight bastions and two gates, city walls were constructed to protect the town from Ottoman threat. Today, most of the walls have been removed, but the Tvrda stands and the Old Town is still inhabited by thousands of residents; the former military buildings are occupied by the university and museums.

D. Co-Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul – Completed in 1898, the brick church features a 308-foot-tall spire, which makes it the tallest building in Croatia outside of Zagreb.

E. European Avenue (Europska Avenija) – The street, which has endured several names in its time, is known for the opulent houses built by wealthy residents prior to World War I in the Art Nouveau style. Although some of the residences are dilapidated, many of the properties are undergoing complete refurbishment.

F. Municipal Park of Petar Kresimir IV – The city park was created at the beginning of the 20 th century complete with trees and fountains – and remains a relaxing central green space today.

G. King Tomislav Park – The pleasant park dates to the 18 th century and is bordered by European Avenue, the Drava River and Tvrda.

H. Croatia National Theater – Osijek has a long theatrical history; the National Theater building, which features Moorish architectural elements, dates to 1866 and is still used for regular performances.

I. Drava River Promenade and Riverwalk – Along the banks of the Drava River are long stretches of pavement perfect for a stroll or bike ride. Many cafes and restaurants line the pedestrian walkways. *Copacabana River Beach is a popular summer spot on the river.

J. Pedestrian Bridge (Pjesacki Most) – The pedestrian bridge, which was built in 1981, has quickly become a symbol of the city of Osijek.

K. Museum of Taste (Muzej Okusa) – Recently opened, the small museum features wine bottles from the past – as well as a large restaurant. It is located on the former City Gardens that dated to 1804.

L. Monument to Fallen Osijek Soldiers – Called ‘The Radiator’ by locals who dislike the style of the monument, the large panel memorial is dedicated to Croatian war veterans and victims.

M. Battle of Osijek Monument – Often referred to as the Fico Monument, the tank and red Fiat monument represents a vivid image from the start of the Croatian War of Independence. As tanks rolled onto the streets in Osijek, a resident parked his red Fiat (Fico) on the street to block the tanks. Instead of halting the forces, the tank simply continued on its route, crushing the car. Captured on film and replayed on the news, residents realized the aggression of the Yugoslav People’s Army. The monument was designed with the car on top of the tank, symbolizing Osijek’s eventual victory.

#3 Kopacki Rit Nature Park, Croatia

Frost covered tree at Kopacki Rit Nautre Park in Osijek, Croatia

Covering 92-square miles of the Danube floodplain, Kopacki Rit Nature Park is the jewel of the Slavonia region. The wetlands are often referred to as the Amazon of Europe and more than 2,000 animals and insects call the park home – including more than 300 species of birds. On the protected land, deer roam the open space and the rivers are filled with fish.

We explored Kopacki Rit on a private tour with a park ranger (which can be arranged in advance through the park’s office). Even in the winter, the park was a stunning sight. Morning frost clung to trees and ice froze at the edges of the lakes. In the winter, most of the swampland was dry, but we could see how high the waters rise in the springtime, marked by discolored bark and moss clinging to tree trunks.

Grey Heron on boardwalk rail at Kopacki Rit Nature Park in Osijek, Croatia

We walked along raised wooden boardwalks, spotting a grey heron basking in the sun and a white-tailed eagle (similar to the bald eagle), flying overhead. Through shallow water, we saw large clams nestled into the mud and caught sight of a herd of wild boar scampering into the reeds.

Before we left the area, we visited the Tikves Castle Complex, which dates to the 19 th century. The castle served as a premiere hunting lodge – and was one of Yugoslavia President Tito’s many residences.

Hunting and fishing are not permitted within the park, with a license; however, gaming is allowed outside of the park boundaries. The park can be toured on foot, on bike, by car (only with guide) and by boat or train.

#4 Local Croatian Drinks in Osijek

Osjecko Pivo, Osijek, Croatia

Mostly known for wine production, Slavonia is also getting on the Croatian Craft Beer bandwagon, and of course, there is always time for coffee!

Croatian Wine

Row of wineries in Zmajevac Village near Osijek, Croatia

Wine is what lured us to Slavonia, so we were eager to taste the local products. Wine making in the region dates to Roman times. There are four districts – Baranja, Djakovo, Erdut, and Fericanci – in the area surrounding Osijek where the conditions for growing grapes are favorable.

Winemakers excel in producing both red and white wines. Since we have a penchant for red wine, we mostly sampled full-bodied wines made from Cabernet and Frankovka grapes, but enjoyed light and crisp white wine from the region, as well.

We particularly enjoyed the cuvee wine from Josic, which we tasted both at restaurants in Osijek’s city center and at the Josic winery and restaurant in the village of Zmajevac. Their cellar is located along an inclined and somewhat inconspicuous lane that leads north from a church on the main road.

Past their property, tiny brick houses, which are occupied by small-production wineries, line the street. Strategically built along the sloping land, the small dwellings feature cellars that have been dug into the side of the hill as a way to store wine naturally at an ideal temperature.

Beer in Osijek, Croatia

Gajba Craft Beer Bar in Osijek, Croatia

Wine isn’t the only adult beverage in Osijek; the city has a long and well-known place in the beer industry, as well. The local Osjecko beer was the first ever Croatian beer, which is still made today using the original recipe from 1697.

While history intrigues us, so does the modern art of craft beer. Lucky for us, the craft beer revolution that is sweeping through Croatia has found its way to Slavonia and Osijek. A few bars, like American Bar Dollar and Gajba , have both worldwide and Croatian craft beers on their menus.

Croatian Coffee Culture

It would be remiss if we didn’t talk about the coffee culture in Osijek. Cafes attract longtime locals, young people and students (the local Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek enrolls 18,000 pupils). From boutique cafes to long-standing institutions, in the city center or along the river promenade, there are plenty of places around town to get a good cup of Joe. We particularly liked the atmosphere at Trica , which featured a cozy indoors and a bright, brick patio.

#5 Festivals in Osijek, Croatia

Musical performance at Advent u Tvrdi in Osijek, Croatia

We love attending festivals around the world – especially ones that help us to better understand the culture of the places we visit. Attending Advent in Osijek wasn’t just about holiday spirit and mulled wine (although, there were plenty of both!); it also allowed us to gain insight into the history of Osijek, as well as an opportunity to observe and converse with the local people.

Advent u Tvrdi , which ranks as the largest Christmas celebration in eastern Croatia, takes place on St. Trinity Square in Tvrda (Citadel). The small wooden chalets that circle the square sell sweets, traditional Christmastime fare and copious quantities of mulled wine and hot rum punch.

Locally made products and Christmas gifts are sold from huts surrounding the Plague Column. A towering evergreen tree, decorated with lights and ornaments, stands in the square; friends and families gather around the wood burning stoves to stay warm on crisp evenings.

Osijek Advent Events

On the stage, varied performances – from traditional tamburica to an energetic and nationally-known cover band, Soulfingers, to a local girls’ choir – entertain the fair-goers. Scheduled activities, like decorating Croatia’s traditional licitar ornaments with the Blazekovic family , are planned in conjunction with the main square celebration.

Croatian Wine Event

WineOS 2016 event in Osijek, Croatia

Advent wasn’t the only event taking place during our visit to Osijek; we were also able to attend WineOS. The wine fest, which makes use of the vacated city center mall, features more than 70 exhibitors. Top winemakers from Croatia and the neighboring countries of Serbia and Hungary, pour unlimited samples of wine for thirsty attendees.

Osijek hosts many festivals – cultural, musical and theatrical – throughout the year. Check the Osijek city calendar or the Osijek-Baranja event page for more information.

#6 Local Croatian Markets in Osijek

Woman sells fresh meat products at Autopija flea market in Osijek, Croatia

For a glimpse of local life, there is no better place to go than the market. Osijek actually has two main markets: the Green Market in the city center, where produce and fresh meat are for sale, and Autopija, a flea market outside of the city center.

Osijek Green Market

Colorful vegetables at Green Produce Market in Osijek, Croatia

At the Green Market, locally grown fruits and vegetables are displayed on tables under umbrellas. Items are weighed using traditional balance scales and weights. Fresh-made cheeses and meats are sold from glass cases indoors and small shops surrounding the market sell fish – some so fresh they are still swimming.

Autopija Flea Market, Osijek

Everything's for sale at Autopija Flea Market in Osijek, Croatia

The Autopija flea market is less formal – with a higher entertainment value. Clothing, tools, cars, antiques, fish tackle and a mishmash of used items are displayed on carts or simply spread out on blankets – and sometimes on the hoods or roofs of cars to appeal to shoppers at eye-level. Unlike the Green Market, all prices are negotiable at the flea market.

Locals can score the best deals – as speaking English practically guarantees a higher price. Still, unique and incredibly inexpensive items can be found. While the market may seem unsanctioned and unorganized, regulations exist. One rule we learned: no live animals – such as chickens, puppies and bunnies – are allowed to be sold inside the market…you have to cross the street for those.

#7 Photography in Slavonia, Croatia

Man stands on pedestrian bridge on foggy morning in Osijek, Croatia

We didn’t anticipate it, but we found the Osijek-Baranja region to be a photographer’s paradise. It wasn’t only the incredible nature and the beautiful historic city buildings that caught our eye, but also the small towns and places where time seems to have stood still. We were enchanted by the abandoned structures we found in the countryside and delighted to capture life on a farm, just a few miles from Osijek.

Bonus! #8 People Of Osijek

Welcome drink with Goran, owner of Orlov Put Eco Farm

So often, our opinions of places are formed by our interactions with the local people – and we found the citizens of Osijek to be particularly charming. Kind, open and engaging, the locals made us feel quite welcome in the city that felt more like a small town!

Osijek is the fourth largest city in Croatia and a must stop when traveling through Slavonia. The 3 most important attractions of the city are Tvrđa Osijek, Co-cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, and the famous pedestrian bridge. But Osijek is internationally known because of the Suleiman the Magnificent Bridge. The bridge connected Osijek and Darda across the river Drava in a total length of as much as 7 kilometers. If you decide to visit this part of Croatia, don’t miss the opportunity to take a walk in the Kopački rit Nature Park or Spačva Forest, or climb the Papuk Mountain. If you are visiting Osijek it is a recommendation to visit the ancient Fortress – Tvrđa Osijek and go through the Water Gate to the Drava. The Osijek Fortress complex was built in the 18th century with imposing city walls and the baroque buildings within it. Today there are still numerous cafes, schools, museums, galleries, so you can feel the vibrancy of the city. Actually, Osijek was the most important military, economic, administrative, and cultural center of Slavonia and still remains today. Unfortunately, the destruction of the war is still visible. However, every year more and more money is being invested in reconstruction. For more information, click on the Osijek Travel Guide article below.

Top things to see and do in osijek.

Medieval castles, typical Slavonian village architecture, huge oak forests, and Lipizzaner horses are just a part of the charm of Slavonia and one of the reasons to visit. Explore the article “ 10 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Slavonia and Baranja ” for more information!

Explore the architecture

Slavonia, along with Baranja and Srijem, is the area of eastern Croatia bordered by the Sava in the south and the Drava in the north and tackled with Ilova in the west and Bosut and Vuka in the south. Slavonia is also known for the horse breed of Đakovo Lipizzaners, which has been bred in Đakovo for centuries. Osijek is the largest and capital of that part of Croatia. The city is also the economic, traffic, and cultural center of Slavonia. In the list below of the Osijek Travel Guide, find the most interesting attractions in the field of architecture.

The Osijek Fortress complex was built in the 18th century with imposing ramparts and city gates, a Romanesque core, and the main square. The fortress belongs to the most important old Croatian city cores and is the largest harmony of baroque military buildings preserved to this day. Two very important museums for this part of Croatia are located on the Holy Trinity Square (Trg Svetog Trojstva) – the Archaeological Department of the Museum of Slavonia and the Museum of Slavonia. The most important museum event in Croatia is Noć Muzeja (Night of the Museums) when all museums and galleries are open for free to all visitors.

Red Fićo is a place that has historical meaning to city Osijek. During the Homeland War, on June 27th, 1991, a red Fićo (Fiat 500) tried to block a tank of the Serbian army exactly on this location. Also, one of the best sights of the city is the votive monument of the Holy Trinity built-in 1729. To understand its significance, you must go back to the time when the people of Osijek suffered many accidents and deadly diseases. The worst of all was the plague (Black Dead). After causing the death of General Maximilian Petrash, his wife placed this votive pillar in the center of the square. The aim was to “have mercy on God and push the plague out of Slavonia.”

Where to eat & drink

Pig slaughter and the production of dried meat products in many Slavonian and Baranja backyards is an indispensable tradition. The pig slaughter was usually held on Republic Day, November 29, while in the last couple of years it has mostly been waiting for colder weather. Along with sausage, blood sausage, and smoked ham, the two most famous Pig slaughter dishes are Čvarci and Kulen. Kulen is made of high-quality pork meat and fat. These pork products were usually left in a cool and airy place for 6 to 9 months. These products were most often eaten after the harvest, the most important agricultural event in that part of Croatia.

In the last few years, the Osijek culinary scene has changed a lot. Many new restaurants with very different cuisines have opened but the city still has a lot of traditional restaurants. If you are looking for local food I would recommend the restaurant Kod Ruže. In the list below of the Osijek Travel Guide, explore some of the most famous traditional dishes.

  • KULEN  – a type of flavored sausage made of minced pork
  • KULENOVA SEKA  – made with the same ingredients as Kulen, but it is dried in a thinner casing, so it matures earlier than Kulen
  • ČVARCI  -they are a kind of pork “crisps”, with fat thermally extracted from the lard
  • ŠARAN NA RAŠLJAMA  – way of roasting carp with vertically placed branches
  • ČOBANAC  – Shepherd’s Stew
  • FIŠ  – a hot, spicy paprika-based river fish soup
  • GOULASH  – a stew of meat and vegetables usually seasoned with paprika and other spices
  • SATARAŠ  – a light stew made of bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, and condiments
  • PERKELT  -a meat stew similar to goulash
  • BACON (SLANINA)  – a type of salt-cured pork

During my stay in this city, I visited some restaurants and cafes and wrote reviews about them. Restaurant SportHouse  Osijek  is an old redesigned railway hall turned into a modern and very comfortable restaurant. If you want to watch sports and have a beer with a slice of delicious pizza, here’s where you want to go. Merlon Osijek has one of the top-rated restaurants in Osijek (there are about 1500 on Google with an average rating of 4.5) and is extremely popular for young people. During the year, in the city of Osijek happens several large events. One of the most famous events in the city is Osijek Antiques Fair. It is held every first Saturday of the month in the Tvrđa Osijek. Most events are over the summer months like Osijek Summer of Youth, Osijek Air Show, Osijek Ljeto kulture, Osijek Summer Night, Re Art Festival, etc. The largest number of sporting events is held in the “Gradski vrt” sports hall. Also, the most modern football stadium in Croatia is currently under construction in Osijek.

Cost & Living

Prices per square meter of new apartments in Osijek are much lower than in other large Croatian cities. If you want to buy an older apartment the prices are between 800 to 1100 euros. For a new apartment, the price is between 1,200 and 1,500 euros. The center and the Upper Drava coast are the most wanted locations. However, one of the biggest problems in this part of Croatia is emigration to the western countries of the European Union. Because of this, a lot of real estate is for sale, especially houses. The situation is even worse when we go to any village or a small town in Slavonia, Baranja, or Srijem.

If you are coming to this city as a tourist, the average price for an apartment for 4 people is 100 euros per day. I would recommend the Sobe Merlon (Rooms Merlon) where we paid 60 euros a night for 2 people with included breakfast. Prices in restaurants and cafes are the lowest in Croatia. If you decide to go to a restaurant, the best choice will be pizza and different types of pasta, with prices ranging from 30 to 50 kuna. Dinner for family (4 people) at local taverns will be paid between 150 and 250 kunas, without appetizers, desserts, and drinks.

Is it safe to travel to Croatia?

Traveling around osijek.

The entire public transportation system consists of trams and buses. Osijek public transport is managed by the company Gradski prijevoz putnika d.o.o. It has existed since 1884 when the horse-drawn tram started in Osijek, the first in Croatia. Also, before many European and world cities (e.g. San Francisco). In 1926, the tram line was electrified. Today, Osijek has a total of 5 tram lines with a total of 29 kilometers of tracks.

Paper tickets can be purchased at Gradski prijevoz putnika d.o.o. ticket offices or from drivers in vehicles.

Osijek Weather

Osijek has a warm-summer humid continental climate and over 1850 hours of sunshine annually. Summers are warm with average temperatures between 22-27 degrees Celsius. However, depending on the year, it sometimes happens that temperatures are around 35 degrees in the hottest part of summer. During the summer are frequent afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Also, spring and autumn are relatively warm (expect daily temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius).

During winter, prepare for the fog. Temperatures are usually between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius from December to February. Annual precipitation is 650 millimeters. Most precipitation expects during the summer. Due to climate change, the probability of snow falling is much smaller. Before, while I was still living in that part of Croatia, there was snow every winter and in large quantities.

  • The hottest month is  July , with an average high of 30.0°C (86.0°F)
  • The coldest month is  January , with an average high of 10.4°C (50.7°F)

Day Trips from Osijek

Although tourism in Slavonia is developing tourism much more slowly than in the rest of Croatia, it has a lot of potentials. Kopački rit is an attraction that will always attract a large number of guests and I definitely recommend you to visit. A lot of smaller cities like  Vinkovci , Vukovar, and Ilok have a great history and you will surely enjoy discovering the beauty of Srijem. Because of this, if you’re coming to this city I’m sure you’ll want to take some one day trip. In the list below of Osijek Travel Guide, find the most popular one-day trips.

  • KOPAČKI RIT  – one of Europe’s largest preserved natural wetlands
  • VINKOVCI  – the oldest European city
  • VUKOVAR –  the Hero city of the Croatian Homeland War
  • ILOK –  guardians of Croatian wine tradition
  • ZMAJEVAC  – a settlement in the region of Baranja, wine destination
  • ĐAKOVO –  a city known for its Cathedral basilica of St. Peter
  • NOVI SAD (SERBIA) – the second-largest city in Serbia
  • ŽUPANJA –  the cradle of football and tennis in Croatia

10 Best Things To Do in Osijek, Croatia

Located in the region of Slavonia in Eastern Croatia, the city of Osijek is a complete departure from the usual destination in the country. It has the river Drava instead of the Adriatic or the lakes and waterfalls of Plitvice. There are a picturesque street and Rivas that stretch for several kilometers instead of islands.

And there are culinary delights, wineries, breweries and strong coffee culture in place of castles featured in TV shows or quirky museums. Different, but definitely worth spending days on if you’re going to Croatia.

Curious yet? Read on to find out more about which places to visit and what are the best things to do in Osijek, Croatia.

1. Walk Down The European Avenue, Osijek

Osijek’s European Avenue

Osijek’s European Avenue is a colorful, lively and picture-perfect street. Stroll down and take in the impressive architecture, making your way from the Old Town (Tvrđa) to the city center to the Korzo promenade which then leads to the main square.

Be sure that while you’re walking along what is considered to be the most beautiful street in Osijek, stop and look at the impressive Secessionist architecture as seen in the row of palaces.

You should also visit the Museum of Fine Arts as well as the city library, which is housed in buildings with equally fascinating design and history.

2. Climb On The Top Of Bastion

bastion in osijek

Among the best activities to do in Osijek is to climb up the defensive wall around the old town called the Bastion. This is a picturesque area that also offers scenic views over downtown Osijek. It can be reached through a flight of stairs that you’ll find by the Water Gates.

The to of the Bastion is grassy, making it ideal for relaxing while enjoying views over the city, and you can even have a picnic.

3. Cross the Pedestrian bridge in Osijek

Pedestrian Bridge in Osijek

One of the three bridges that pass over the river Drava in Osijek, the Pedestrian Bridge is also a popular landmark. This stunning suspension bridge opened in the 1980s and a popular thoroughfare that connects two sides of the river Drava.

A walk along this bridge is one of the best things to do in Osijek during the night when it is brilliantly lit and even more beautiful.

4. Stroll Along the River Drava

River Drava in Osijek

The promenade that spans the shoreline of rivers in Croatia is called Riva, and Osijek happens to have what’s said to be the most beautiful in Croatia. Stretching up to several kilometers on both sides of the river Drava, this Riva is among the best things to see in Osijek.

The city side Riva is a picturesque area often littered with families or friends taking leisurely strolls, as well as cyclists or skaters. It has some of Osijek’s best attractions such as the old city walls and the pedestrian footbridge.

The opposite side of the river meanwhile is more rustic and closer to nature and is preferred by joggers or those who want to enjoy fewer crowds and a quieter walk.

5. Visit the Osijek Cathedral

Osijek Cathedral

The Neo-Gothic Osijek Cathedral is the tallest structure in Croatia that’s not in Zagreb . This church was heavily damaged by the war during the early 1990s but was immediately restored when the conflict ended. Putting it back together was a priority for the city, evident in how majestic it looks now.

This is among the best attractions in Osijek and a must-visit if you’re into architecture or simply want to admire something beautiful. It’s also well-loved as the church walls offer a cool respite from the scorching heat especially during summer months.

6. Check Out the Catacombs

If you’re up for something intriguing and mysterious while in Osijek, the Catacombs is an ideal place to visit. With influences from those that used to occupy the city such as the Turkish, Austro-Hungarians and Romans, the architecture of the catacomb remains undefined but fascinating nonetheless.

It is said that a network of tunnels is all over the city, and that sone evidence is actually in Tvrđa. The catacombs are said to be part of that tunnel network but being located on the other side of the river Drava, it was abandoned and forgotten. However, it does provide a rather charming backdrop to music events during summer nights and remains to be one of the best things to see in Osijek.

7. Visit Tvrđa

Tvrđa in osijek

Home to the most number of well preserved Baroque structures in the whole of Croatia, Tvrđa is one of the best places to see in Osijek. It is the city’s Old Town area and is actually the administrative, cultural and educational center of Osijek and the whole region.

Be sure to check out the Habsburg star fort, which dates back to 1687, constructed after the victory over the Ottoman forces. Its tower still stands on the hill and visible from the Drava river. The interiors of the fort have been transformed into a nightlife hub where there are bars and restaurants which is also among the most-visited parts of the city.

8. Eat Up in Osijek

croatian food

Great food is one of the highlights of any visit to a new locale and in Osijek, the gastronomic delights are something you’d talk about even back home. Croatia has always been proud of how the country’s food is prepared — made from naturally-raised food ingredients, with no enhancements, no chemicals added and definitely no preservatives.

This city is no exception and feasting on their food is one of the best things to do in Osijek. Most dishes are hearty, savory and spicy, as they’re usually are cooked or prepared with paprika.

Nearly everything is a must-try as they’re guaranteed fresh and delicious, whether it’s cured meat, hearty soup, roasts, or tasty pasta dishes. Some dishes you need to try are the River Fish Stew, the Parklet (thick stew with strong beef or venison flavors), and Čobanac (spicy stew best with wild meats like boar or venison).

You also must not pass up the chance to try Kulen (paprika and garlic spiced pork sausage), and Slavonska pizza which is made with bacon, ham and Kulen, mushrooms, onions, few chili peppers and either with sour cream or an egg on top.

9. Drink Up

osijek drinks

After feasting on their food, it’s time to sample the drinks. In Osijek or anywhere in Croatia, you’re pretty much torn between wine, beer, and coffee. The areas surrounding Osijek is best for growing grapes, so winemaking has been in this region since Roman times.

Wines to try include reds made from Cabernet and Frankovka grapes, the crisp and light whites from the Slavonia region, and the cuvée wine from Josic. Meanwhile, Osijek’s very own Osjecko beer is the first-ever beer in Croatia, dating back to 1697, and still being made up to this day using the original recipe.

Osijek has also caught on in the craft beer craze and there are pubs that offer both local and international craft beers. Lastly, another drink that’s a must when you’re in Osijek is the coffee. There’s a strong cafe culture here and you’ll find a cafe nearby every way you turn. Slow down after a hearty meal with a cup of coffee, drink it slowly with a dessert or with something to read, even while strolling around the city.

10. Hop across the border

Novi Sad city centre

Located close to the borders of Bosnia, Hungary, and Serbia, Osijek provides a variety of opportunities to visit any of these countries for a day trip. The last two are specifically closer, so one of the best things to do in Osijek is to just ho off a bus or train and go.

There’s Novi Sad in Serbia, which is the second-largest city, that has pretty much the same vibe as Osijek. Then there’s the city of Pécs in Hungary that also has a rich culinary culture and a definite must if you want to sample more hearty and delicious food. A must-try is the ethical foie gras, served with rich onion and paprika sauce and rustic bread.

11 Reasons to Visit Osijek, Croatia

Osijek

The main city in Slavonia, north-east Croatia , Osijek was once a major Habsburg military base. Refined architecture typifies the main streets of its Upper Town while the former Tvrđa fortress now houses bars, restaurants and a regional museum. A Hungarian influence can be detected in the local cuisine, in which spicy peppers come to the fore.

Once its own separate entity, Osijek’s Habsburg-built Upper Town (Gornji Grad) on the south bank of the Drava contains the bulk of the city’s main streets and landmarks. The grandiose Europska avenija, the Croatian National Theatre and the Church of St Peter and St Paul are all found here within a short stroll of each other. Cafés and restaurants abound, should you want a break from all the sightseeing.

River Drava and bridges

One of the key features of Osijek costs nothing to see or to enter. Its river may not beautify the city like the Danube does in Budapest or divide it so clearly as the Sava in Zagreb – all you need to see, apart from the zoo and an open-air pool, is on the south bank – but the Drava is worth a waterside stroll in fine weather, restaurants such as El Paso pizzeria operating on moored boats. Nearby, the Pedestrian Bridge, a surprisingly rare crossing point, lends a little grace to the panorama.

River Drava

Thanks to its Habsburg and Hungarian heritage, Osijek goes overboard when it comes to cakes, pancakes and pastries. Slathered in whipped cream and chocolate sauce, these are works of art in themselves, embellished with sprinkles and slices of fruit. The best place to find them is either at the café-restaurant at the city’s best hotel, the Waldinger , or the classic pâtisserie Peter Pan near the river, purveyor of ice creams as well as cakes and pastries of every description.

2. Kopački rit

Just outside Osijek with tours sold in town, Kopački rit is a birdwatcher’s paradise, a large expanse of wetlands where the Danube and Drava rivers converge. Accessible by rowing boat, on foot across a series of boardwalks and even on horseback, this popular nature reserve contains kingfishers, wild geese and white-tailed eagles, as well as catfish, pike and perch, and pine martens, wild boar and wild cats. The reserve lies on the path of many migration routes, making autumn the best time to visit.

3. Trg Ante Starčevića

Trg Ante Starčevića, known by locals as simply Trg, the Square, is the centrepiece showcase of Osijek. Named after Ante Starčevića, the 19th-century politician whose monument stands here, the square is in fact a triangle, with the city’s most notable church dominating one corner. Towering over the public fountain, a main meeting place, the neo-Gothic Church of St Peter and St Paul, is visible all around the city and a point of reference for first-time visitors as they explore Osijek.

4. Museum of Slavonia

Building, Museum

The main attraction within the Tvrđa fortress complex, the Museum of Slavonia was established as long ago as 1877. The permanent collection runs chronologically, through the centuries starting with from prehistory and the Roman era. Look out for the temporary exhibitions such as displays of Habsburg-era photographs when Osijek was an important outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The building itself, the former Vienna Chamber dating back to 1702, is also worth a look around.

A Baroque military landmark fashioned in the classic Habsburg shape of a star, the Tvrđa fortress was initially built shortly after the Turks were first driven out of Osijek, their brief but dangerous return prompting swift completion in the early 1700s. A military complex for nearly 200 years, the bastion saw many of its walls taken down in the 1920s. Today, its criss-cross of streets and many wings house school and college buildings, numerous bars and restaurants and the Museum of Slavonia. It’s residential too, home to some 10,000 citizens.

Fiš paprikaš

The key local dish to try, typical of Slavonia, is fi š paprikaš , similar in concept to its cousin, spicy fish soup, found just over the border in Hungary. Here, the main elements are traditionally carp and pike, and the best tomato- and onion-based fi š paprikaš is slowly stirred in a large cauldron over an open fire. Paprika, of course, is another vital ingredient, and pasta is also added. Every local restaurant in Osijek will not only serve fi š paprikaš but its reputation will depend on it. In the Tvrđa fortress, the Kod Ruže serves its fi š paprikaš with home-made pasta.

The waterfront holds few surprises until you get to walk past the Caffé Bar Bounty and, where Šetalište Kardinala Franje Šepera meets Ulica Vjekoslava Hengla, find a statue of Pablo Picasso. Sitting, stripped down to his shorts as he liked to paint, this particular likeness has him balancing on a narrow pedestal, his hands spread as if he were about to fall – or plunge into the Drava. Its creator was Ivan Sabolić, former dean at Zagreb’s Academy of Fine Arts, who died in 1986, shortly after the statue’s completion.

8. Crveni fićo

Close to today’s border with Serbia, Osijek sustained heavy damage, as well as significant loss of life, during the first stage of the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s. One particularly dramatic incident was when one tank rolled over the little red Fiat car (‘Fićo’) of a local citizen, screened on the news later that day. In more recent times, a monument was erected and the car placed on top of the tank to symbolize the city’s triumph over its aggressor.

Advent u Osijeku: Zimska čarolija uz tisuće lampica, mirise sezonskih jela te uz nastupe Vanne, Tolje i drugih glazbenika

osijek powerboating festival

Kao šećer na kraju godine, Osijek će ovog prosinca zablistati tisućama lampica i svjetlosnim instalacijama, zrakom će se ponovno proširiti mirisi sezonskih jela i toplih napitaka, a večeri će oživjeti zvuci žive glazbe. Dvostruki dobitnik titule “Najljepšeg Adventa u Hrvatskoj”, Advent u Osijeku, pretvara grad u zimsku čaroliju, posebno osvjetljavajući kulturno-povijesne dragulje i lokacije.
