Tennis tournament to be held Sunday
The Conanicut Yacht Club will host the fifth annual Roger Chase Memorial Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament this Sunday, May 30, at its tennis facility on Whittier Road in Jamestown.
The tournament is open to the public and the club encourages local participation to honor the memory of Roger Chase, an English teacher at the Jamestown Elementary School and long-time island resident who spent many summers as a teaching tennis professional at the Conanicut Yacht Club.
Play is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. and run through the afternoon. The entry deadline is Friday, May 28, at 6 p.m. The draw will be limited to 16 teams, and an entry fee of $50 per team includes balls, prizes, food and drink.
The net proceeds of the tournament will be donated, as they have been each year, to the Jamestown Medical Fund.
White tennis attire and proper footwear are required.

A4 Spotlight: Conanicut Yacht Club Awarded
by Ross Cann | Apr 15, 2020 | Professional , Project Spotlight
After many years of using a converted farm shed as its “Tennis Hut,” the membership of the Conanicut Yacht Club (CYC) decided to explore the possibility of upgrading its facilities. Under the leadership of the Commodore and a few key members, a group of architecture firms were approached about participating in a paid competition to give the “Hut Committee” concept ideas of what a new facility might look like and roughly cost.
The A4 Architecture design proposal was selected as the solution that seemed to best fit the club’s long term needs. Ross Cann , founding and managing principal at A4 Architecture, felt very at home working on the project. As a lifelong tennis and paddle tennis player, and a member of numerous racquet clubs himself, he understood the needs and desires of the players and club members extremely well.
The CYC is a venerable but understated organization, and so A4 Architecture designed a building that was traditional in character and closely matched the vernacular character of the long-established, residential neighborhood in which the 8 tennis court, 2 paddle court facility was located. The goal was to have the structure look like it had been there for decades.
A4 Architecture developed the final design, working closely with a 14 member committee and making multiple presentations to the club membership over a two year period to gauge their needs and desires for the facility. The building was divided into 4 areas: a comfortable member area with a fireplace and great views to the tennis and paddle courts; a pro shop and office area; new bathroom and shower facilities; and a basement area for mechanical and storage. The building was surrounded by a large porch for outdoor seating and bleachers facing the tennis courts for watching tournaments and club championships.
Since the facility opened in 2018, the members have embraced the facility enthusiastically and play on both the tennis courts and paddle courts has increased significantly. Just as importantly, gatherings in the club area have served to help bring the membership of the club together in fun and fellowship. Where change was once a scary prospect for many members of the CYC, that change has been proven for the betterment of the members of the organization, all thanks to a carefully considered design by A4 Architecture.
In 2020, the Conanicut Yacht Club Racquets Facility was named Hut of the Month by Platform Tennis Magazine. Read the article here .

Wharton Plays Farewell Match in Court Tennis
Aug 20, 2003 | Uncategorized
On Sunday, in his final match as the Head Professional at the National Tennis Club in the Newport Casino, former Jamestown, RI resident George Wharton, together with his partner, Mark Devine of Aiken, South Caroline, were narrowly defeated in an exciting Pell Cup match against Time Chisholm of New York City and Josh Bainton, George’s successor, of Newport.
Chisholm is the world’s second-ranked court tennis player.
Wharton and Devine lost the first set 6-5, and the second 6-4 and pressed their much younger opponents fiercely throughout the match.
The evening before this match, Wharton and his former assistant, Jacques Faulise, of Cranston, were the guests of honor at a dinner at the Conanicut Yacht Club. More than 100 people were in attendance as many speakers lauded Wharton and Faulise, who were each retiring after many years as the court tennis professionals at the National Tennis Club.
Faulise had been the assistant pro there for 17 years, and Wharton the head pro for 15 years.
The dinner was part of the festivities occurring during Pell Cup competition, a double tournament attracting players from around the world. Players compete in five divisions.
Ken Jacobs and Greg Van Schaack, of Tuxedo Park, New York, defeated Newporters John Damon and Doug Speak in the A division. In the B division, Jamestowner Jane Lippincott teamed with Chris Cline of NY to defeat Robin Martin and Rick Moroscak, both of Washington D.C. Newporter Ross Cann and Peter Elebash of NY and Pam Beach defeated Kip and Frank Curren, of Middletown, RI in the C division. Peter Bender of London, and Sean Herlihy of Boston defeated Newporters Liz Kavney and Arthur Chapman in the D division.
The top division, the Open, was won by Chisholm and Bainton. Josh Bainton took up his duties as the new head professional of the National Tennis Club shortly before this tournament began. His assistant will be Richard Smith of London.
George Wharton has moved with his family to Jupiter, FL but maintains, through his relatives here, close time to Jamestown. Jacques Faulise is now the lawn tennis professional at the Duxbury Yacht Club. Both Wharton and Faulise have vowed to stay active in court tennis competition.

Show goes on for 93rd Around the Island
Published on September 6th, 2020 by Editor -->
Jamestown, RI (September 6, 2020) – Normally, Conanicut Yacht Club Around the Island Race is the culmination of an entire sailing season, bur for many who participated today on the 18-mile lap of Jamestown, it was their first regatta of the year as many races were canceled this summer to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
For 93 years, the race has been held on the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend and usually attracts 100+ boats from in and around Narragansett Bay for the single distance race followed by an awards party on the lawn of the island yacht club.
This year, 78 boats came out to the starting line but all on-shore festivities were canceled. To maintain social distancing, the race committee volunteers were split among a large starting boat and the yacht club utilizing radio communication to facilitate organization.
“The biggest challenge of 2020 was the question of ‘should we or shouldn’t we’,” said regatta chairman Alan Baines. “The division of the race committee, canceling the party, and patiently waiting to open registration until we had a solution was the best course for us and it worked.
“It also helped that we had the perfect wind conditions and exactly high tide in the middle of the start,” Baines continued. “Thank you to the cooperation of the competitors and Rick and Jody Hill for lending us their Moody, Buffalo, for the Race Committee boat, which allowed us to stay spread out.”
A strong southeasterly breeze of 15-20 knots held for the entire day. The smaller boats started just south of the Newport Bridge first and headed south for a clockwise course around Jamestown. With the 10 division starts staggered by about 6 minutes, by the time the fastest and largest boats rounded Beavertail point, all the boats gathered downwind in the West Passage of Narragansett Bay.
Rich Moody skippering Aurora, a R/P 66, was the fastest competitor registered and managed to pass every boat and won the Commodore Brakenhoff trophy for the fastest elapsed time with 2:03:22, just shy of the course record.
On corrected time though, it was Ben Steinberg and the crew on his Melges 32, Full Send, who captured the Commodore Quinn Trophy with a corrected time of 02:50:48. “We were able to make huge gains by staying in the breeze downwind,” said Steinberg upon his win. “Getting up to 19 knots in the 32 was probably the highlight of the race.”
Just behind Steinberg was Jim Grundy’s new Dunning 44 Rigadoon in second place, and Matt Dunbar’s VXOne, Smoke. Due to the consistent wind, it was one of the faster Around the Island Race’s to get the entire fleet to complete in under four hours.
Two other perpetual trophies are awarded to the CYC Members with the fastest corrected times over and under 30 feet. The Eads Johnson Trophy was awarded to Andrew Kallfelz’s Safir (for over 30 feet) and Robert A. MacLeod Rear Commodore Trophy to Mike Hill and his J24 Obstreperous.

Constance Beels Thomas, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2024, at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice at the age of 97.
Born in Amsterdam on February 21, 1927, Constance, known to her friends as Connie, was born to Gerard Haro Beels and Gonda Matron. She was one of five children and is survived by her sister Sacha. Connie lived through the hardships of World War II before embarking on a career in the foreign office in The Hague, where she worked for NATO. It was during her voyage to the United States on the ship the Nieuw Amsterdam that she met her future husband, W. G. Brooks Thomas. They were married on October 11, 1952, and spent 55 wonderful years together until his passing in 2008.
Connie and Brooks moved frequently over the years, making friends in Providence, Rhode Island, Old Lyme and Watertown, Connecticut, and Baltimore, Maryland. In retirement, they settled in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Later in life, she enjoyed the company of companion, Robert Welty, who passed in 2019.
Connie was a talented woman who loved tennis, needlepoint, reading, and gardening. She was a member of her local garden club and enjoyed spending time at the Dunes Club in Narragansett and the Conanicut Yacht Club in Jamestown. She had a creative drive and used it to write and illustrate children's stories for her grandchildren and create beautiful needlepoint pieces. She never failed to remember her children's and grandchildren's birthdays each year.
Connie is survived by her three children, Pamela Thomas Burman (Larry), Mark van Lennep Thomas (Kitty), and Geraldine Brooks Carroll (Charles), as well as 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Samuel Phillips Thomas, and her husband. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories.
A celebration of Connie's life will be scheduled in the future. May she rest in peace, knowing she was loved and cherished by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Constance's love of birding with a donation to The Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Donations can be made online at: asri.org/donate or mailed to 12 Sanderson Rd Smithfield, RI 02917. Please reference Constance's name with your donation.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals: atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.
Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final. While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut. Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so. But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.
This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime. Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30). Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date. Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles: Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30. In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans: Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.
For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship. The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize. The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it. Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.
The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth. There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat. Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.
I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games. They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL. They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.
- Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
- Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
- Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
- Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
