Lürssen Superyacht Blue

One of the world’s largest superyachts just hit the water.

Lürssen’s mighty new 525-footer, christened Blue , left the Bremen yard in Germany on Saturday, July 2, after successfully completing her sea trials in late June. The behemoth is now the fifth-longest superyacht in the global fleet and one of the biggest in the world in terms of volume. In fact, she offers a giant interior of 14,785 GT.

Size isn’t the only thing that matters, though. The shipyard says Blue was designed to be as efficient and eco-friendly as possible. She is equipped with a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system that was developed in-house. In addition, the behemoth vessel is fitted with a high-tech exhaust system that reduces noise, vibrations and emissions, according to the yard. She also sports an innovative wastewater treatment plant that allows treated wastewater to be safely disposed of in “drinking water quality.”

The team from Terence Disdale Design worked with Lürssen to create the yacht’s sleek, contemporary exterior and traditional interior. You can, of course, expect a laundry list of amenities, including not one but two helipads and a huge swim platform aft that connects to a beach club. Lürssen did not share any details regarding Blue ‘s exact layout, but there will no doubt be cabins and lounges aplenty.

“We are very proud of Blue as yet another statement of Lürssen’s ability and desire to build yachts that meet all of our exacting owners’ requirements, guided by our core focus of expert engineering, beautiful design and being a proud market leader in developing sustainable technologies,” managing partner Peter Lürssen said in a statement .

Lürssen's "Azzam" Superyacht

Lürssen’s ‘Azzam’ measures just shy of 593 feet.  Lürssen

Of course, Lürssen has proven itself adept at delivering sizable superyachts. In fact, the German yard is responsible for 13 out of the 25 top builds in the industry. That includes the world’s longest superyacht, Azzam , which measures just shy of 593 feet and offers a volume of 13,136 GT.

Blue is now en route to the Mediterranean where she will enjoy her very first season with her new owners.

blue super yacht

The 160-metre yacht BLUE has been given a contemporary exterior and a traditional, fresh interior design, both by Terence Disdale Design. Efficiency and the desire to be as environmentally friendly as possible were key drivers for the technology on board. BLUE is equipped with a highly efficient Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion Concept developed by Lürssen’s own engineering specialists. The yacht also has an electric Azimuth Pod Drive, which in electric mode can be used separately, or when the PTI units are engaged, with the two propeller shafts. In order to generate less noise and vibration and reduce nitrogen oxide levels, BLUE is completed with a state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system. Furthermore, the wastewater treatment plant is equipped with new membrane technology that allows the treated wastewater to be safely disposed of in ‘drinking water quality’.

Superyacht sales plunge as wait times rise, Russian oligarchs drop out of the market

Superyachts sales took a dive in 2023, as long waiting lists, soaring costs and oligarch sanctions hit demand, according to a new report.

Sales of new superyachts (yachts over 100 feet long) fell 17% last year, according to the new SuperYacht Times' State of Yachting report. There were 203 sales of new superyachts in 2023, down from 245 in 2022 and down from the record 313 in 2021.

Ralph Dazert, head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, said a buyer placing an order for a new yacht over 200 feet today faces wait times of three to four years due to backlogs stemming from the pandemic. Prices are also soaring due to higher labor and material costs.

Dazert said he expects new superyacht sales to "go down a little bit further this year" given the continued costs and delays.

The largest superyachts took the biggest hit, with sales of yachts over 200 meters, or roughly 650 feet, falling 40%. The main reason for the large superyacht drop is due to the fact that rich buyers from Russia are dropping out of the market following the Ukraine invasion by the country in 2022, according to the report.

"The Russians were prone to ordering very extravagant and very large yachts," he said.

Americans are picking up some of the slack, accounting for nearly a quarter of all superyacht sales last year. And while Americans tend to build smaller yachts compared to Middle Eastern and Russian buyers, the American boats are getting larger.

The average length of a Saudi-owned superyacht is 202 feet, compared to 200 feet for Russian buyers and 177 feet for the Americans, according to the report.

Even as new sales declined, yacht completions were up. That data represents yachts ordered during the frenzy of the pandemic that are just now being launched. The number of completions surged 31% in 2023 to 202 superyachts.

The rising fleet of superyachts translates into a growing demand for the entire ecosystem of the yacht economy — from builders and brokers to marina slips and crew. There are now nearly 6,000 superyachts, triple the number in 2002, according to SuperYacht Times.

Dazert said the flood of wealthy buyers who came into the market for the first time during Covid continue to use their yachts. Many are upgrading, which means the high-water mark for the yachting economy will likely keep rising.

"The pool of customers has expanded permanently," he said.

Robert kraft ‘a big part’ of why ‘blindsided’ bill belichick lost out on falcons job.

Did Bill Belichick get screwed by Robert Kraft?

An ESPN.com report published Wednesday about Belichick’s failed pursuit of a new coaching job said the Patriots owner called Falcons owner Arthur Blank “to warn him not to trust Bill” after Belichick parted ways with New England .

One source told ESPN that Kraft “was a big part” of why the Falcons passed on the 72-year-old Belichick and hired Raheem Morris instead .

When Blank and Falcons brass ranked their top coaching candidates, none of them even had Belichick in their top three, per ESPN.

Bill Belichick missed out on the Falcons coaching job after parting ways with the Patriots.

“He was essentially voted off the island,” a source close to the Falcons’ hiring process told the website.

Belichick was said to be “blindsided” by not being hired as the new Falcons coach after believing he was getting the job.

This came after Belichick insisted to Blank he was not looking to become a coach/general manager hybrid like he was for a majority of his 24-year run in Foxborough, according to the report.

Belichick first had a one-on-one chat with Blank aboard the Falcons owner’s $180 million superyacht in Antigua on Jan. 15, and Blank came away from the meeting “thinking this is my guy,” a source close to Belichick told ESPN.

Four days later, Belichick met with several members of the Falcons front office at Blank’s home near Atlanta.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft reportedly warned Falcons owner Arthur Blank "not to trust" Bill Belichick.

Then Blank spoke to Kraft, Blank’s closest friend among NFL owners, according to ESPN.

The two spoke at least twice, and Kraft told the Falcons owner “you’ll never have a warm conversation with” Belichick, the report said.

“[Kraft] found Bill to be extremely difficult and obstinate and kind of stubborn and, in the end, not worthy of his trust,” a source close to Kraft told ESPN. “And also very, very, very arrogant.”

The same source told the outlet that Kraft and his son Jonathan, the Patriots president, felt “betrayed” by Belichick.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank met twice with Bill Belichick before hiring Raheem Morris.

ESPN previously reported in January that tensions between Belichick and Kraft grew to the point that the coach waited so long to bench a struggling Mac Jones this past season as “a f–k you to Kraft.”

The Patriots finished the 2023 season 4-13, Belichick’s worst during his 24 seasons with New England, and missed the playoffs for the third time in four years since Tom Brady left.

“I don’t think they’d try to hurt Belichick,” the source close to Kraft said of Robert and Jonathan. “But I don’t think they’d try to help him either. They weren’t going to try to sink him. He was finished as an effective head coach. Just look at his last four years in New England. A disaster … If you’re Arthur Blank, why do you want the headaches?”

Robert Kraft (l.) and Bill Belichick (r.) during a press conference announcing Belichick's Patriots departure on Jan. 11, 2024.

Patriots spokesperson Stacey James disputed ESPN’s reporting on Kraft’s communications with Blank.

“Robert steadfastly denies saying anything negative to Arthur Blank about Bill Belichick after Robert and Bill mutually agreed to part ways,” James told ESPN. “In fact, Robert advocated for Bill to get the job.”

One source close to Belichick suggested to ESPN that Kraft may be motivated to keep Belichick out of the league after seeing Brady win a ring with the Buccaneers.

“If Bill goes on to have success and Tom already had success, then who does [Kraft] have to blame?” the source said to ESPN.
