Who Is Below Deck Sailing Yacht's Colin Macrae?

Colin Macrae joined the cast of  Below Deck Sailing Yacht  for Season Two, but who is he?

In a bio shared by Bravo , Macrae is described as a long-time sailor who worked as a Chief Engineer on numerous superyachts for eight years prior to joining the Bravo cast on Parsifal III . "With a big heart and an impish smile, Colin is more than happy to lend a hand anywhere that he might be needed. But when Colin's kindness gets mistaken for weakness, fireworks fly," the bio teased.

Macrae, who has tattoos and long hair, put his boating skills to work aboard the Parsifal III , alongside returning cast member Captain Glenn Shephard, and was part of an all-new crew on the waters of Croatia. The crew included Chef Natasha De Bourg, Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher , First Mate Gary King, Second Stew Dani Soares, Third Stew Alli Dore, and Deckhands Sydney Zaruba and Jean-Luc Cerza Lanaux. However, when it came to his time aboard, Macrae wasn't all business and, in the trailer, promised viewers that things were "gonna get crazy" between himself and the other yachties (via YouTube ).

In addition to boating, Macrae is a bit of a social media master.

Colin Macrae boasts over 93k followers on YouTube

According to a report from Meaww on March 1, Macrae is no stranger to the spotlight. In fact, he has quite the social media following, with 93.5k people keeping tabs on his YouTube channel, which has the name "Sailing Parlay Revival." He also has an additional 23.3k followers on Instagram and 5.5k on Facebook . On his YouTube channel, Macrae give his followers an inside look at his day-to-day life by sharing a number of videos of his adventures at sea, some of which have hundreds of thousands of views.

On Macrae's official website (via Meaww ) his YouTube channel is said to be "about a young man from New Zealand." It is also noted that Macrae had spent his life savings on a hurricane-damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 catamaran after working as a superyacht engineer for ten years.

How Daisy's 'Below Deck Sailing Yacht' Romance with Colin Went from Hopeful to Her 'Worst Nightmare' (Exclusive)

Bravo's Daisy Kelliher tells PEOPLE that her boatmance with Colin MacRae "unfortunately wasn't smooth sailing" — and that she had reasons to be "leery" of the Chief Engineer before they hooked up

Lanford Beard has been with PEOPLE since 2015. In addition to serving as the Senior Digital TV Editor, she has edited for Lifestyle and News verticals across the site. Lanford previously worked at Entertainment Weekly, NBC News and Ralph Lauren, to name a few. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Middlebury College and a Master's of Science degree from Columbia University's School of Journalism.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht 's Daisy Kelliher has no problem admitting the "very complicated" dynamic with her friends–turned–lovers Colin MacRae and Gary King took a major toll on her during the course of season 4 — and, to some degree, still plays on her mind to this day.

Monday's episode showed Parsifal III 's Chief Stewardess make a major slip while emotionally and physically exhausted aboard, calling Colin by his friend's — and her former fling's — name in bed.

Colin was already trying to decide how to negotiate the "true feelings" he was developing for Daisy since their surprise hookup in the context of his friendship with the yacht's First Mate. Making things even murkier, Gary made a drunken, yet "tactical," revelation that he and Daisy had slept together twice in the recent past — and agreed to keep the trysts a secret, even from close pal Colin.

Fred Jagueneau/Bravo

On Monday's double-header episodes, Colin and Gary talked through their issues (as much as boat bros do, at least), and Colin assured Daisy that he and she were "moving in the right direction." And as she told PEOPLE previously, she had already been hopeful there was "a future there" with newly single Colin since before filming for the season began.

But the moment Daisy half-sleepily called Colin by Gary's name, it seemed all their momentum as a couple had been scuppered.

"I have never been mistaken for anybody else in bed," he said in a confessional interview. "It's a blow to the ego. I mean, maybe she's actually thinking about him when we're fooling around? I don't know."

Hours after he called Daisy a "stage five idiot," she explained herself: “I thought you were Gary. Because the two are in my head, you’re both f---ing with my head, I just want you out of my f---ing head." She insisted the misnomer was Gary's fault for his aggressive flirting during drunken days out with the crew, but Colin wasn't convinced.

"It's his fault that you’re thinking about him?" he challenged. "You're blaming literally everyone and everything else for what comes out of your mouth. And you need to take accountability."

Later, he told her plainly, "What I want is for you to figure out what you want."

Now, nearly a year since filming season 4, Daisy tells PEOPLE the transition from friends to more with Colin "kind of just switched" the moment they first kissed . "It all started to get really, really heavy, really quickly." While she is very clear that "Colin and I were definitely a lot more serious" than any potential romance she had with Gary , she does believe Gary's presence "added another dynamic to mine and Colin's relationship."

The would-be couple "weren't getting on — and Gary was still there," says Daisy. "It was complicated."

Compounding the confusion, she and Colin — who'd been friends for three years prior to becoming intimate — had plenty to learn in this new phase of their relationship

"We got to learn a lot about each other," she says. "I think he was more surprised by me than I was by him. I think he was surprised at how affectionate I am because I put on a scary facade — everyone thinks I'm this ice queen when I'm working, but I actually do have a soft side, and I am intimate and I am affectionate."

The pair never labeled anything during their final weeks aboard the sailing yacht. "I definitely had my wall up," she admits, and "it takes a lot for me to break that down."

She continues, "Unfortunately it wasn't smooth sailing, no pun intended. I think in an ideal world we would've liked each other, we would've gotten to know each other and kind of progressed into that. But I did have a history with Gary , and that's not anyone's fault. Colin was taken [at the time I slept with Gary], and Gary and I get along and, yeah, I guess we have feelings for each other to some level. So that just added so much complicated stuff."

She does add an important bit of context that might surprise Below Deck fans. "I was also leery of Colin. He does have a lot of girlfriends, so I didn't want to be just another girlfriend," she says. "And for me, I felt he needed to take time to be on his own and figure life out on his own before we got into something serious . So there was a lot going on while we were trying to navigate our feelings for each other."

As for where her relationship — friendship or otherwise — with Colin stands now, Daisy chooses her words carefully. "I don't want to give too much away, but a lot has happened in the last few weeks and at the moment I don't expect to hear from him," she says.

"It's difficult to not be able to kind of comment on it because I don't want to spoil anything for the viewers or anything like that," she continues. "But yeah, a lot has happened in the last year."

As someone who's previously seemed hesitant to get entangled in a showmance, Daisy is blunt in acknowledging that "this playing out so publicly is definitely my worst nightmare. It's not the most fun experience and definitely not the way I thought things were going to go, but here we are."

But after a season marked by literal "s---shows," explosive breakdowns and near-collisions (and those are just the problems with Parsifal III itself), Daisy tells PEOPLE: "I feel like I've been through the worst of it. I've dealt with a lot over the last few weeks, and now I'm just putting it behind me and just hoping everyone enjoys the season and that will make it all worthwhile."

With a a handful of episodes remaining, Daisy says she's still "a yes person at the moment" when she considers whether a return for season 5.

"This season's been definitely hard," she acknowledges. "But yeah, I'm still enjoying the ride and if they asked me back, for sure I'll probably do it — unless I'm not completely scarred by the end of this season."

‘I Am Not a Cheater’: Colin MacRae Clarifies Below Deck Sailing Yacht Reunion Bombshells

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Daisy Kelliher’s love triangle with Gary King and Colin MacRae now seems like more trouble than it was worth. Maybe there is something to the saying, “don’t screw the crew.” No matter how good friends you are. But it pales in comparison to what was going on off shore.

Because as it turns out, there was another alleged love triangle between the engineer and a mystery woman that he is now in a relationship with. At the Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4 reunion , there were some revelations.

In fact, Colin revealed that he had initially hooked up with Daisy before the season started. Daisy hit back, claiming that Colin had hooked up with the other girl around the same time. Colin’s claim that he told both women about the other did little to aid his cause.

Colin claims there was “ZERO overlap” between Daisy and his current girlfriend

A Bravo Instagram fan page commented on the reunion bombshells. This prompted Colin to post a rebuttal in his defense.

@bestofbravo wrote, “Colin and Daisy actually had hooked up for the first time BEFORE the season began filming. Also, Colin was sleeping with another girl before filming as well, which Colin said Daisy knew about, and Daisy said in the reunion it therefore made her defensive.”

The timeline between Colin breaking up with Daisy and starting with the other girl was, “six weeks.” Yet the fact that he was sleeping with both women at once gave Daisy pause.

In response, Colin posted the statement above. He claimed that he “was single going into the season,” and that there was ZERO overlap.” According to the engineer’s explanation, “Daisy and I ended things shortly after the show and THEN I hooked up with the ‘other woman.'”

He called the assumption that he had a girlfriend off the boat during the season, “horse sh*t.” And concluded the statement by saying he is, “not a cheater.”

Daisy and Gary are reported to be filming Season 5, but Colin is out for this one. Things on Parsifal III will never be the same again.

TELL US – WHAT DO YOU THINK OF COLIN’S EXPLANATIONS? DOES THE FACT THAT HE WAS HONEST WITH BOTH LADIES MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE TO HIS ARGUMENT? HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT DAISY’S REACTION TO IT ALL?

‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ Star Colin MacRae Says His Hook-Up With Daisy Kelliher Was “Inevitable”

‘Below Deck’ Exclusive Clip: Barbie Pascual Refuses To Change Her Signature Margarita Recipe For Fraser Olender

‘below deck’ chief stew fraser olender has a “love interest” of his own this season: “i’ve always been a third wheel”, former ‘below deck’ charter guests hit choppy waters as they are charged with identity theft in prescription drug scheme, alex propson on whether or not casual sex can exist in ‘winter house’: “it’s difficult, but i don’t think it’s impossible”.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans are going to see a lot of Colin MacRae this season—and that is perfectly okay. Back for his third season on the hit Bravo show, MacRae is forced to deal with a harrowing mechanical issue in the premiere episode before the first charter guests even step onboard. Everyone’s favorite Chief Engineer was shocked to discover that the engine was filled with salt water rather than clean oil and to learn that it will take two weeks to disassemble, clean and reassemble the engine before the Parsifal III is ready to hit the high seas. Fans will have to wait until next week to see if MacRae and the intrepid Captain Glenn Shephard can work their magic to make this charter season happen.

With 15 years of super yacht experience, MacRae has always been one of the coolest heads onboard the Parsifal III. However, this is the first voyage that the handsome sailor has been single, and, as evidenced by the explosive Season 4 trailer , MacRae takes full advantage. “I get into the thick of it a little bit,” said MacRae impishly. When asked about his kiss with Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher , MacRae says it was “inevitable.” “We just love each other’s company. It was just something that just happened very naturally,” mused MacRae. One person who isn’t thrilled about their sweet hook-up? MacRae’s friend First Officer Gary King who has engaged in a long flirtation with his OG cast mate Daisy over the course of four seasons. Fans will have to stay tuned to see how this dynamic will play out.

Decider spoke with MacRae over Zoom and got the scoop on the various malfunctions on the Parsifal III, his hook-up with Kelliher and why he keeps coming back season after season.

DECIDER: This is your third season on Below Deck Sailing Yacht . What keeps bringing you back? COLIN MACRAE: Captain Glenn. At the end of every season, I tell him, “If you need an engineer, give me a call.” He does, and it’s just too hard to say no. We just get along so well. The trips are always a challenge but always fun.

The Parsifal III is in rough shape at the beginning of the charter season. Did you have any idea of scope of malfunctions when you step onboard?

Nah, absolutely not. Glenn and I keep in touch between seasons, and the boat had just finished a yard period in Spain. Everything was meant to be perfect ready to go, and that just wasn’t the case.

Have you dealt with mechanical issues as severe as those on the Parsifal III previously in your career?

I have. My yachting career has been based in pretty remote places like the Seychelles Islands or Indonesia, places where parts are hard to come by. I’ve been in situations where I just have to make it work. Getting parts flown in just takes too long, and we might have a charter starting or something like that. So, I’ve been in similar situations, but nothing to this extent. This was extreme.

In the premiere episode, you get to step in for Gary due to his positive COVID test . How long has it been since you flexed those First Officer muscles? I own my own catamaran, and I run with about eight crews, so I have been a leader for quite some time. That part I was comfortable with. However, I had no idea where Gary kept things on the boat. I don’t pay attention to that stuff. I’ve got my own department on Parsifal III to worry about. It was a challenge because I just had so much going on in that first week. It was insane.

While all of your challenges that we’ve seen so far—and it’s only the first episode—are exciting, fans are even more eager to see “single” Colin in action for the first time. How do you think they’ll react? I believe there’s a little bit of excitement around that fact [laughs]. The first two seasons I was able to sit back and just be nice and respectful to my partners at the time and stay out of trouble, but nothing holds me back this season. I get into the thick of it a little bit.

In the trailer, we see you and Daisy hooking up. Is there anything you can tease about that? We’ve always had chemistry. We just love each other’s company. It was just something that happened very naturally, something that neither of us were really expecting. However, at the same time, our getting together was probably inevitable if we were both single at the right place at the right time.

Someone who wasn’t happy about your hookup was Gary, whom we see accusing Daisy of “spitefully hooking up” with you to “get back” at him later in the trailer. What was your reaction to hearing this? That accusation was pretty shocking to hear . I had already asked for Gary’s blessing on my exploring a relationship with Daisy, and he gave me the impression that he was totally fine with it. Yeah. I had no idea that conversation was going on behind my back.

Did your kiss with Daisy change the dynamic between the three of you in any way? Not at the start. I thought it was all just fun and games and he was happy for me. He was actually super excited about it to my face. Unfortunately, it did end up putting a strain on our friendships. That’s almost bound to happen when you get romantic with your friends.

One of fans’ favorite aspects of the show is obviously yours and Gary’s friendship and the dynamic in the boys room. Did Chase fit into the dynamics of the giggle club? Chase had a tall order, let’s put it that way. We missed Chef Marcos onboard just because we had all gotten along so well. I’m happy to say though that the Giggle Club was alive and well.

You mentioned Chef Marcos from Season 3 who is currently thriving in his various restaurant endeavors. How does Chef IIeisha compare? IIeisha’s great; we’re great friends. She fit into the crew super well too. She’s a really fun, bubbly person, but Marcos has got a decade more experience than her. She had big shoes to fill.

Mads and Lucy seem like great additions to the interior team. What were your first impressions of them? Lucy’s amazing. She’s a bit of an airhead sometimes, so she had us in stitches a lot of the time. Mags was wonderful too. It was a good interior team this season. They got along really well, and a happy crew makes for a happy time on board.

You have a thriving YouTube channel centered around your own vessel, Parlay Revival. Where is your next adventure going to take you?

Right now, I’m in Mexico on my boat with eight crew, and we’re about to go from Mexico to French Polynesia. That’s 2,600 miles of just open blue water ocean. It’s the biggest adventure of my entire life, and we’re embarking next week. So I’ve got a lot on my plate right now.

How do you juggle commanding this vessel with the premiere of one of Bravo’s most popular shows?

It’s a lot. We just got Starlink on my boat, so I’ve got really good internet across the whole Pacific Ocean now. We’ve got the maritime version, so luckily or unluckily, I’ll be able to tune in and be part of the whole ordeal [laughs]. What can you tease about the rest of the season? People are going to see things that they’ve never seen before. The whole engineering side of the show doesn’t usually get attention, but this season it can’t help but be the focus because there were so many mechanical malfunctions. A couple of things that happened could have potentially ended the entire season. The upside —if I had to find one—is that the audience finally gets a view into my world as an engineer. I think it’s fascinating, but I’m biased [laughs].

Daisy Kelliher, Gary King and Colin MacRae are opening up about the status of their love triangle. During part two of the   Below Deck Sailing Yacht  reunion on Tuesday, the trio shared what happened after the cameras stopped rolling on season 4.

"We explored something together," Colin said of himself and Daisy. "The first time I saw her again was at the Newport boat show, I flew her over from the U.K. to come see me; that was really good. Then, there was a couple of other things that we did. We spent a week together in Mexico, I flew to New York to see her. We were kinda bouncing around together for a little while."

Things, however, eventually "turned a little toxic," according to Colin.

"You can't reason with this woman," he said, "and I realized that and I ended things with her."

Daisy had a different view of the situation. Though she admitted that she and Colin "triggered each other," she claimed that her ex was "missing the whole point of why it really turned badly."

"When I found out he had broken up with his ex-girlfriend in April, I was like, 'OK, great!' Not great, because they broke up; great, because possibly something could happen between Colin and I. We knew we liked each other, we could feel it," she said. "So, I returned to the boat and I find out that he has been sleeping with someone that he's working with. So, I immediately retreat. I put up all of my walls. This is nothing that gets shown. Nothing that's aired."

As such, Daisy admitted that she became "very defensive," but called out Colin for making her "feel incredibly guilty" about her long-running flirtation with Gary.

"Throughout the year, I asked about this woman, and I asked why it was different with me and Gary and not this woman? And he said, 'The difference is, I am telling you, there is nothing between me and this woman. That there is no future; even if you and I break up, there is no future,'" she claimed. "So, then to find out from my crew members a couple of months after we had broken up, that he was now in a serious relationship with this woman, it was very shocking for me to hear. Very hurtful. And, the toxicity was always there because the trust was never there."

Colin and Daisy went on to reveal that they first got together  before  the season. While Colin claimed Gary was "stoked" about the then-budding relationship, Colin said that, at the time, he didn't know about Daisy and Gary's history.

As for why they kept their pre-season kisses under wraps, Daisy explained, "I A) wasn't trying to start a relationship. I wasn't like, 'I kissed this guy three times, I'm in a relationship.' B)…I didn’t know about his current girlfriend that he was hooking up with, OK? So, C) when he told me about this girl, it made me take a step back."

"Yes, I was still hooking up with him. Guess what? I'm 36 in 2023. I can kiss multiple people and not feel ashamed for it!" she said. "So, yeah, when Colin and I were kissing, we still hadn't slept together at this stage, and he told me that he had been sleeping with someone else. So, I was like, 'OK, I guess we're, like, kinda figuring stuff out."

It's for that reason that Daisy was annoyed by the blowback to her drunken truth-or-dare kiss with Alex.

"For me to be held accountable for that, when yeah, OK, Colin and I kissed in a hotel room. So what? Now I'm exclusive? No!" she said. "And it made me put my walls up when I found out he had been sleeping with someone."

Colin claimed the situation "was a lot deeper than that," and alleged that Daisy knew about the other girl, which she denied. Colin continued insisting as much, though, causing Daisy to burst into tears and storm off the set.

"We knew this was going to happen," Colin said over Daisy's sobs. "What I've said is the truth. I've just laid it all out there. Now it's my fault that I'm with somebody else, because we turned toxic? It makes no sense."

When Daisy returned to the reunion, she lamented how she felt "f**ked either way" she approached the whole situation.

"I'm always going to be the bitter, angry, crazy woman. I'm never going to win. It's never gonna matter what I say," she said. "... I defend myself, I'm defensive. I sleep with someone, I'm a slut. I speak up, I'm angry or toxic. I stay silent and I’m weak."

Colin noted that while his and Daisy's connection was "genuine," the arguing got to be too much, so, weeks later, he started a new relationship. All the while, Daisy claimed, Colin made her "feel so guilty about Gary.

"I eventually stopped talking to him. I eventually stopped being friends with him. It turned into a roaring match," she said of Gary, before calling Colin for his own flirting with Ilesha.

"The thing that killed me all season, Daisy, is you kept telling me over and over and over, you didn't have feelings for Gary and that it was me that you wanted to be with over and over and over, and then I'm watching it back, I didn't feel that's the case," Colin responded.

Daisy admitted that she feels "nothing but remorse and shame" for how behaved with Gary, but said she "was scared of getting hurt."

While Gary confessed that he had "deep down" feelings for Daisy, she said she "felt like a piece of meat" between him and Colin.

"I felt like I was a prize. It felt like it was an ego competition," she said. "I don't think Gary had genuine feelings for me. I do think we have a genuine connection, in that sense of what we do the show, and you have this bond. We've been through so much, and we do make each other laugh and feel good, but I think that's just on a feel-good level, and I think he confused that and I think I'm allowed to confuse that. I think we're all trying to figure things out."

While she was trying to figure things out, Daisy admitted that she was falling in love with Colin.

"I was more betrayed by the fact that he didn't tell me he was with this girl," she said. "I thought we were friends and I thought we built a good friendship, and knowing that all of these people on this screen knew this for months before I did, it was humiliating."

As for where they go from here, Daisy said she considers Gary a friend and will coexist as coworkers, and he remarked that they'll "never [be] how we were." Gary and Colin, meanwhile, have maintained a "pretty good" friendship. When it comes to Daisy and Colin, he said he was open to repairing things with her.

"I have regrets, but more importantly I know I have a good heart and I know my intentions were good," Daisy said. "Onwards and upwards."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 filming in Ibiza. Will Gary, Daisy, and Colin be back?

Gary and Daisy coming back, filming for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 in Ibiza

It appears Bravo is quadrupling down on fans wanting to see more tension between Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ s Gary King and Daisy Kelliher! Photos recently surfaced online showing Gary and Daisy filming for Sailing Yacht Season 5 in Ibiza, which would be the fourth go around for the off-again, off-again duo.

Prior to the photos of Gary and Daisy popping up, there were additional photos confirming another returning cast member — other than Captain Glenn Shephard. Nope, it’s not fan favorite chief engineer Colin Macrae. It’s Parsifal III!

We will start with the photos of Gary and Daisy. The images were taken at the La Plaza restaurant in Ibiza and uploaded to reddit on Friday. (For those of you who aren’t familiar with European geography, Ibiza is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula.)

Gary is unmistakable in two of the photos. We can’t be 100% sure that the woman in the green dress sitting on the other side of the table from Gary is Daisy, but most show fans would agree that the confidence level is not far from 100%.

Here is the reddit gallery:

First engineer Colin Macrae does not appear to be dining with the rest of the crew in the photos. That doesn’t mean he won’t be on Season 5, but his return is not looking likely.

The photos don’t include Colin, but it’s assumed they do include several new Parsifal III crew members who will be on Below Deck: Sailing Yacht Season 5! It’s also assumed that Gary has already hooked up with the blonde on his left. 😂

Here are some images of the other crew members — none of which look to be returning from BDSY Season 4:

Parsifal III returns for Season 5

After Parsifal III’s numerous issues this season, including multiple instances of very serious engine trouble , it was speculated that Glenn Shephard might be captaining a new yacht this season. However, photos were shared on reddit on Thursday that show a camera crew on board the familiar vessel!

Spotted in Ibiza by u/Take_Me_To_Ibiza in belowdeck

“Spotted the Parsifal III in Ibiza this week,” u/Take_Me_To_Ibiza’s caption begins, before revealing that the photos were taken five days prior. “Looked like they may have been anchored overnight in Cala Tarida?”

Does this mean viewers can expect more problems from the aging yacht? In April, Captain Glenn spoke with The Wrap about Parsifal III’s mechanical issues, and he revealed that she has gotten a complete overhaul between seasons.

“I just got off Parsifal about three weeks ago in Spain,” Captain Glenn said. “And we’ve just done a complete major rebuild of that engine. Every part that could come off that engine was taken off, and a new part was replaced. So it’s basically a new engine.”

The overhaul didn’t stop there. “We’re doing the same thing on our generators, we’re upgrading a lot of systems,” he added. “But you know, if you talk to any super yacht owner, you’ll find out that a brand new boat, especially because a lot of these are semi-custom, but a brand new boat can have problems. So it’s not just it’s not like it was due to neglect or anything like that.”

I’m guessing most fans will be glad to see Parsifal III back again for another season. I’m not so sure about Gary and Daisy, but time will tell. Meanwhile, keep up with all the love triangle drama between Gary, Daisy and Colin with new episodes of Below Deck: Sailing Yacht airing Monday nights at 8/7c on Bravo!

Which Below Deck Series Is the Best and Which Is the Worst?

With various iterations of the Below Deck franchise, it’s only natural to rank them from best to worst.

The first iteration of “ Below Deck ” began airing on Bravo in the summer of 2013. A brief 11 episodes revealed a reality show different from the usual “Real Housewives” fare. In this case, the wealthy people vacationing aboard a luxury yacht were not the show’s stars, but instead served as rotating groups of charter guests. The real stars of the series were the hardworking crew of the boat, the peasants who at night rest their heads in bunkbeds located — you guessed it — below deck.

The peasants, sometimes called sea rats, have to actually work — and in very unflattering outfits. Again, not your typical Bravo aesthetic. The drama stems not only from their interactions with each other (boat-mances are inevitable), but also their interactions with the often demanding charter guests.

Since the inaugural season, four other versions of “Below Deck” have joined the franchise, and there are now only three weeks a year that pass without a new, original episode from one “Below Deck” series or another. I didn’t stumble upon the brilliance of “Below Deck” until early in the pandemic, but since then I have watched every season of every iteration at least twice. (Embarrassingly, I’ve seen one certain season at least a dozen times.)

Hop on board to see which spinoffs in the franchise have — and have not — earned their stripes. Ranking them was more difficult than anticipated, at least for the middle three on my list. I’ve also highlighted each franchise’s best and most necessary seasons, in case you’d like to watch (or rewatch) with potential bingeing shortcuts in mind. Let’s set sail!

The choice to place the flagship “Below Deck” series first in my rankings may seem like an easy out, but I’ll give you three specific reasons the original will forever reign supreme.

Kate Chastain, Chief Stew for seasons 2 to 7, is the epitome of cool.

Kate Chastain’s ability to remain unbothered is #lifegoals. She’s the show’s raison d’être. Don’t get me wrong: Captain Lee Rosbach , who steered the ship in seasons 1 to 10, is iconic and noteworthy. But he wouldn’t be the Captain Lee we know and love, the curmudgeonly Stud of the Sea, without Chastain providing some levity and humanity.

Despite Chastain being significantly younger than Captain Lee, they’re the dream team, as close as family. Their friendship hasn’t shown signs of sinking even after both left the show — in real life and on television in the form of recap shows, most recently “Couch Talk With Captain Lee and Kate.”

Season 3 of the original “Below Deck” is among the top five most memorable seasons of reality TV.

The Season 3 crew is the perfect mix, but there’s one cast member who stands out as more memorable than all the rest: Raquel “Rocky” Dakota . Rocky’s most hysterical antic? Taking off her clothes and diving overboard in just her underwear in an attempt to escape the boat. This was her only season on the show, and it was glorious.

The near-fatal man-overboard incident in Season 6 put the “real” in “reality TV.”

The infamous “fourth wall” between the boat’s crew and the show’s crew disappeared instantly during Season 6, when an errant line pulled deckhand Ashton Pienaar overboard. A cameraman had the foresight to release the line. If he had not, Ashton was within seconds of dying. Just writing about the incident made me tear up all over again.

There are many other people and events that put the original “Below Deck” a notch above the rest, but these three standouts cement it as the best show in the franchise.

Bingeing Shortcut: Chastain’s six-season run is impressive and shows a full character arc. Watching seasons 2 to 7 will give you more than enough of an introduction to the Below Deck franchise, while providing something that resembles a long-term storyline via her personal growth — not to mention her loving relationship with Captain Lee.

“Below Deck Sailing Yacht” was an exciting third installment when it joined the franchise in 2020, since the first two series take place on motor yachts and this one introduced a sailing yacht. Four seasons in, the core cast of Captain Glenn Shephard , Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher , Engineer Colin Macrae, and Chief Officer Gary King is solid.

Kelliher is considered the second-best Chief Stew of all the shows (second to Queen Kate Chastain), and her friendship-turned-love-triangle with King and Macrae is gut-wrenching television. Plus, Season 2 results in a baby for two cast members!

Bingeing Shortcut: Not only can you skip the first season, but you should skip the first season. It was dreadful, and the only person who stuck around for the following seasons was the affable Captain Glenn. Seasons 2 to 4 are must-see TV, but I don’t want the first season to throw you off!

I wrestled with the placement of “Below Deck Mediterranean” — the first spinoff in the franchise — the most. It premiered in 2016, just three years after the original, and recently finished airing its eighth season. For now, “Below Deck Mediterranean” gets a third-place ranking that could drop in future years. I don’t see it rising. Captain Sandy Yawn is an inconsistent micromanager, and there’s too much turnover among the crew.

The primary reason to watch “Below Deck Mediterranean” is the dynamic between Captain Sandy (who started in Season 2) and the seasons 1 to 5 Chief Stew, Hannah Ferrier . Whereas Chastain and Captain Lee will give you the warm fuzzies, Ferrier and Captain Sandy can barely contain their disgust for each other and are more likely to inspire frustration. Neither is particularly likable, but their power struggle is fascinating and ends with a midseason bang when (spoiler alert!) drugs come into play.

Bingeing Shortcut: The heart of the show lies with the Captain/Chief Stew struggle, so seasons 2 to 5 are your best bet.

“Below Deck Down Under” has been on for only two seasons, and I suspect future seasons will push the spinoff up my ranks. Since its 2022 debut, “Down Under” has shown promise for two reasons, both of which involve boating rock star and Chief Stew Aesha Scott , who we earlier met as a stew on “Below Deck Mediterranean.” Good-natured and clever, this New Zealander brings out the best in everyone and has a sweet relationship with Captain Jason Chambers that rivals the camaraderie of Chastain and Captain Lee.

Besides Scott’s ability to get along famously with most of her crew, she facilitated an aftermath of nurturing following a traumatic evening captured on camera during the second season: Two cast members, a male deckhand and a female stew, were the targets of sexual assault by other crew members. In another life-changing moment, the show’s behind-the-scenes crew didn’t hesitate to break the fourth wall and intervene immediately.

Producers made the choice to air the intervention and the raw aftermath. Captain Jason also fired the offending crew members. Meanwhile, Scott’s calm, caring nature amid the chaos gives me hope that we may soon see some needed reality reckoning in the Bravo-verse, which has come under fire in recent years for behavior gone way too far.

Also, Captain Jason is solid eye candy.

Bingeing Shortcut: You can skip the first season. It’s uneventful.

I was tempted to write “Bingeing Shortcut: Skip it” and nothing else, if that tells you anything.

It’s not that the one season of “Below Deck Adventure,” which aired in 2022 and 2023, was awful. It’s that the lack of necessity automatically renders it less interesting. That the promised outdoor adventures were few and far between didn’t help. Its single season’s noteworthy players are Captain Kerry Titheradge , who’s now steering the original “Below Deck” series, and charter guest Heather Gay of “ The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.”

It seems unlikely we’ll get a second season, and I’m OK with that. I have the rest of the franchise to keep me from walking the plank.

Bingeing Shortcut: Skip it.

Season 11 of the original “Below Deck” airs on Mondays on Bravo, with episodes streaming the next day on Peacock . You can stream the other iterations on Peacock too.

‘Below Deck’ Sails Into a New Era

With a different captain at the helm and new production elements, the reality show about charter yachts is switching up its style.

A man in a crew member suit stands behind a bar and tends to flowers in a vase.

By Shivani Gonzalez

Starting a new season of “ Below Deck ” can be similar to returning to summer camp as a kid — you know it’s going to be fun and that you’ll be in the same environment, but some of the people will be different and you’re not quite sure what the vibes will be.

This time around, in particular, feels that way because for the first time in the show’s 11-season run, Captain Lee Rosbach is no longer at the helm. It’s a pivotal moment for a franchise that has become one of the most popular entities in the sprawling universe of reality TV since premiering on Bravo in 2013 . The show’s appeal was built on endless romances between various crew members (“boatmances,” as they came to be known), horrible charter guests and some sort of passive-aggressive fight about how many shackles of the anchor chain should be in the water. And there was always Rosbach presiding over the drama as he trudged around the boat, reeling off one liners like “I’m madder than a pissed-on chicken” and “we screwed the pooch so many times we should have a litter of puppies running around.”

At the center of the show now is Kerry Titheradge (the stern yet goofy captain of “Below Deck Adventure” fame), who is managing the Motor Yacht Saint David with the cheeky chief stew Fraser Olender by his side.

With that change in captain, the energy on the boat — both onscreen and off — is different, according to Olender.

“I feel like Kerry this season, as opposed to Lee, has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” Olender said in an interview. “With Kerry, he taught me a lot and sort of forced to me confront issues directly with my team, work them out, as opposed to making executive decisions too soon.”

This shift in management style changes the central conflict — whereas the drama once focused on the captain swiftly kicking out any unpleasant crew member (as we might have seen with Rosbach), the drama now focuses on the whole crew trying to get along (since Titheradge gives people those second chances).

Additionally, Olender noted that the captain’s relationship with the crew can also affect the drama on board.

“Captains absolutely do get involved, whether they know it or not,” Olender said, adding that for the crew, everything is about “trying to impress your captain.”

This phenomenon plays out early in the new season when the lead deckhand, Ben Willoughby, called out a fellow crew member over the radios about not wearing a life vest — something he easily could have done in private. The drama that followed became an interpersonal conflict between the two of them, both with the ultimate goal of impressing Titheradge. (Of course, the two deckhands had kissed on the previous crew night out, which is more in line with the “Below Deck” drama viewers are used to.)

For “Below Deck” showrunners, the changeovers in the cast allowed them to rethink what the show would look like.

From the season premiere, it was immediately apparent that Rosbach’s absence wasn’t the only change this season: The filming is sleeker, the daily, multicourse meals prepared by the chef are given their own glamour shots and the cameras sometimes cut to the perspectives of yachties running around on deck and through the galley.

“Our showrunner, Lauren Simms, is an avid consumer of all different kinds of media,” Noah Samton, a senior vice president of unscripted current production for NBCUniversal, said in an interview. “She pitches us different ideas on how to stylistically evoke different feelings and change the mood a little bit of ‘Below Deck’ without removing what really works.”

Moving through the rest of the season, and potentially through seasons to come, Olender is aiming to bring a cutthroat management style while also bringing affection for his stews, all with his signature British humor.

On Bravo’s side, there are changes in the works for the other “Below Deck” spinoffs — including “Sailing Yacht,” “Mediterranean” and “Down Under” — which collectively, have 26 seasons. Specifically, Samton said that “Down Under” is currently filming and that even though fans should be ready to see new things, the show will stay true to its original concept.

“These are real yachties doing a real job so you have to stay within those confines because the audience isn’t going to want anything that is too produced or fake,” Samton said. “So we have to find ways to reinvent while staying true to the original concept of the show.”

And as Olender said: “I’m sure that every year if I were to work with this franchise again, that I’ll be thrown a collection of total chaotic and disastrous stews — that’s what makes it watchable.”

Below deck: 10 best seasons in the franchise ranked.

From the Mediterranean to the Australian coast, some seasons of Below Deck had more exciting adventures than others. Which seasons hit the target?

  • Below Deck season 2 was a turning point for Below Deck Mediterranean, with new crew members and dramatic storylines that laid the foundation for future seasons.
  • Below Deck Adventure season 1 provided viewers with an exciting and dramatic look into the world of luxury yacht charters, showcasing the trials and triumphs of the crew.
  • Below Deck season 5 brought a burst of new energy to the flagship show with a ship full of inexperienced hands, refreshing the series and keeping it strong.

With Below Deck season 10 wrapped up and Below Deck Mediterranean season 7 in the books, fans of the franchise have many memorable seasons to look back on. Spread across five different series, the over-the-top antics of the high-profile luxury yacht industry have made for amazing reality TV.

No matter what ship the audience sails with, they are guaranteed an exciting and dramatic time on the high seas. Though the shows have always been must-watch TV, some seasons of the franchise left a lasting impression on viewers due to the high-scale drama and earned much higher scores.

10 Below Deck Mediterranean Season 2

Like its predecessor, Mediterranean had a rocky first season but came into its own by season 2. Almost completely replacing the cast from season 1, Sirocco's crew was all-new, and what made the season great was learning about them. Hannah and Bobby's bond was tested throughout the season as the two veterans split over handling day-to-day operations in the face of a new captain and crew. Love triangles formed, and the entire season exploded when Bugsy and Hannah had a massive falling out. Though the show would get more dramatic as the years progressed, season 2 planted many seeds that would pay off later.

9 Below Deck Adventure Season 1

Below Deck Adventure season 1 was a successful spin-off that followed the high-seas adventures of the crew aboard a luxury yacht, The Mercury, and catering to the needs and demands of wealthy charter guests as they sailed through the Fjords of Norway. The crew faced various challenges throughout the season, including demanding charter guests, tight working conditions, and interpersonal conflicts. The season offered viewers an exciting and often dramatic look into the world of luxury yacht charters, showcasing the trials and triumphs of the crew as they worked together. So far, there's only been one season.

8 Below Deck Season 5

The fifth season of the flagship show was a turnover year, and a ship full of inexperienced hands was a recipe for instant drama. Because the show is a reality program and essentially runs on drama, the arrival of new crew members was like a refresh button that kept the show from growing stale. Even with new crew members, the veterans continued to grow into their characters, and Kate had a particularly illuminating season when she went ashore. Though it was tough to let go of some familiar faces, season 5 was a burst of new energy that kept the show strong.

7 Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4

Once again returning to the Sirocco, and with a primarily new crew in tow, Mediterranean' s season 4 was anything but a mid-run low point. Some familiar faces returned from season 3 to be a guiding voice, but the new crew members were what made the season shine. The coast of France was the setting for the season, and its beautiful vistas are the backdrop to some fantastic inter-crew drama. Aside from that, the antics of guests like former baseball star Johnny Damon were the cherry on top of an entertaining season.

6 Below Deck Season 7

Though the show has slowly become more and more over-the-top with each subsequent season, a perfect balance was reached in the seventh year. The ship set sail to Thailand to start the season, and the return of memorable charter guests improved the show. The humor was ramped up, but there were also shocking, dramatic moments, including Kate's near departure from the show. While it had come a long way since season 1 and was almost unrecognizable, season 7 is considered the original series's last great season.

5 Below Deck Season 3

Like Mediterranean , Below Deck 's season 3 was an improvement because it was a growth and continuation of ideas in the second year. The over-the-top drama that would characterize the show started to creep in, but there was still much yachting action. Eddie's shocking return was a perfect hook for the season to come, and there was tension in the episodes that built around scandals and relationship drama. Though some of the fakest things about the show began to enter into the mix by season 3, it was never a tedious watch.

4 Below Deck Season 10

The latest installment of the original Below Deck was well-received by fans. One of the season's biggest storylines was the conflict between Alissa and Camille. Alissa was a new stew struggling to learn the ropes, and Camille was a more experienced stew frustrated by Alissa's mistakes. The two women clashed multiple times, and their feud eventually led to Camille's firing. Another major storyline of the season was Fraser's coming out story. His story helped to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues in the yachting industry.

The season also featured several other memorable moments, including a boat party that got out of control, a romantic connection between Hayley and Tyler, and a surprise visit from Captain Lee Rosbach, who won't be returning as Below Deck season 11 cast member.

3 Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 2

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 2 is another fan-favorite installment of the franchise. Captain Glenn Shephard returned for his second season at the helm of Parsifal III, and he was joined by a new crew of officers, including First Mate Gary King, Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher, and Bosun Jean-Luc Cerza Lanaux. The crew also included three new stews: Dani Soares, Alli Dore, and Sydney Zaruba, and two new deckhands, Madison Stalker and Paget Berry.

One of the biggest storylines of the season was the love triangle between Daisy, Gary, and Alli . Daisy had a crush on Gary, but Gary was dating Alli. The situation became even more complicated when Alli found out that Gary had kissed Daisy. Alli was devastated, and she broke up with Gary. Daisy and Gary eventually got together, but their relationship was short-lived.

2 Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5 followed the crew of the luxury yacht The Wellington as they chartered the Balearic Islands of Spain. Captain Sandy Yawn returned for her third season at the helm of The Wellington, and she was joined by crew including First Mate Malia White, Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier, and Bosun Alex Radcliffe. The crew also included two new stews, Bugsy Drake and Jess More, and two new deckhands, Kiko Lorran and Robert Westergaard.

One of the season's biggest storylines was the conflict between Hannah and Malia. Hannah was a longtime crew member on Below Deck Med , and Malia was a new crew member eager to prove herself. The two women clashed on multiple occasions, and their feud eventually led to Hannah's firing on Below Deck Med .

1 Below Deck Season 2

Though Below Deck 's season 1 was essential and helped launch it into a franchise, season 2 is where the show blossomed. Weaving its narrative quite fluently, the season set itself apart from most other reality shows by telling a complete story that includes all its characters. Relationships were formed and tested throughout the season, and whether deckhands were fighting or flirting, it seemed as if there was always something interesting going on. A good reality show needs balance, and Below Deck season 2 was able to perfectly mix its drama with the behind-the-scenes antics that made the show enjoyable in the first place. It forever remains the best installment of the series.

Below Deck Mediterranean airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5: When does it premiere?

Captain Glenn Shephard on Below Deck Sailing Yacht

Below Deck Season 11 has yet to hit Bravo airwaves, but that hasn’t stopped fans from asking about Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5.

Captain Glenn Shepard and his Parsifal III crew have been fan favorites since the show was revamped for Season 2.

Fans wait to have Below Deck Sailing Yacht back on Bravo airwaves each year.

This year is no exception, especially after fans were less than thrilled with Below Deck Med Season 8.

Let’s look at when the sailing show will be back on the small screen.

When will Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premiere?

Unfortunately, the wait for Captain Glenn to return with some new and returning crew members will be awhile. There is an entire season of the OG show to air before we get to see the sailing show.

Below Deck Season 11 premieres on Monday, February 5 at 9/8c. If Bravo follows past seasons, there will be anywhere from 15 to 17 episodes of Below Deck featuring Captain Kerry Titheradge.

Based on that timeline, Below Deck would air the Season 11 finale in mid to late May, with a possible reunion show to follow. That means Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 will kick off at the beginning of June.

Even if the Below Deck Season 11 finale ends in mid-May, the Memorial Day holiday will push back Below Deck Sailing Yacht. Bravo won’t start a new season on a holiday, that’s for sure.

This points to four more months until the Parsifal III guys return to Bravo airwaves.

What else do we know about Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5?

We know the upcoming Below Deck Sailing Yacht season was filmed last summer. Photos of Daisy and Gary filming on Parsifal III were leaked well ahead of Bravo’s confirmation of the show’s renewal at BravoCon.

Colin wasn’t in any pictures, and his travel adventures at the time have fans believing he won’t be on the next season.

Meanwhile, Gary’s future on the show remains up in the air amid sexual assault allegations made against him by a production team member.

As Monsters and Critics previously reported, the scandal broke right after filming, and Gary was soon removed from the BravoCon list of attendees.

So far, Bravo and 51 Minds has been tight-lipped on what that means for his presence on Below Deck Sailing Yacht. Gary has played a key role on the show since Season 2. Editing him out or reducing his role will drastically alter the season.

Keep checking back for more updates, as details on the next sailing season will be here before we know it.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is currently on hiatus on Bravo. Below Deck Season 11 premieres on Monday, February 5, at 9/8c on Bravo.

What's more, Daisy has also formed an unlikely friendship over the past few months with actress Christina Applegate, who became a big fan of the Below Deck   franchise.

"She’s a huge Bravo fan, and she reached out to me via Instagram, and was massively supportive," Daisy shared in an interview with the  Daily Mail on February 19. She said, 'Hey Daisy,' and we FaceTime and stuff. She's just so nice."

The chief stew also noted she hoped to "meet up" with Christina some day. Daisy didn't post any photos from her L.A. trip with Christina, but we wonder if they did indeed meet up during Daisy's trip.

"She's busy with her family and I know she is taking it easy, and keeping all of her energy for her [Multiple Scelorsis], but hopefully we’ll make time," Daisy concluded to the outlet.

More details from Daisy Kelliher's vacation in Los Angeles

Earlier in January, we caught up with Daisy when she visited out west. For the occasion, took to her Instagram Stories to share a view of herself taking in the beautiful sunset by the beach.

In addition to her sunset pic, Daisy also shared a snap of herself soaking up the sun on the gorgeous California beach.
