Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

yachts in a harbour

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

yachts in a harbour

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

yachts in a harbour

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

yachts in a harbour

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

yachts in a harbour

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

yachts in a harbour

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

yachts in a harbour

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

yachts in a harbour

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

yachts in a harbour

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Harbour Island Yacht Charters: Things to Do & See

Harbour Island pink sand beach

Pink Sands Beach of Harbour Island

Famous for the color that gives it its name, Pink Sands Beach is home to an array of five-star resorts, natural wonders, and of course, its one-of-a-kind, coral-colored beaches – blush by day, and a vibrant, glowing pink at sunset. Yacht charter guests will usually find locals wading through the shoreline’s tranquil blue waters; a beautiful sight, offset by the broken shells, pieces of rock, and small, nearly invisible “Foraminifera” that give Pink Sands Beach its signature color.

Dunmore Town

As the capital of Harbour Island, Dunmore Town sits more towards the center of the island – symbolic, considering it’s also the area’s center of life. A quaint, but lively little town, it is distinguished by the Colonial-era clapboard houses that line its narrow streets, shaded only by the tall trees and verdant landscapes towering above.

Briland’s Blue Hole

The surrounding waters of Harbour Island are home to indigenous sea creatures, mystical shipwrecks, coral gardens, hidden caves, and a true buried treasure, Briland’s Blue Hole. Several miles off Harbour Island, this 1996 discovery turned out to be a system of underwater caverns; the entryway to a submerged sinkhole filled with bone-white walls, clear and colorless water, and diverse schools of brightly-colored fish.

Loyalist Cottage

With architecture dating back to the late 1700s, Loyalist Cottage is one of the oldest homes on Bay Street; built by one of the island’s original settlers in 1797. Easy to spot with its turquoise exterior and bright white trim, this historic locale, now privately-owned, is the most photographed house on the island.

Amazing Snorkeling

On Harbour Island, there is no shortage of activities for avid snorkelers. With its Elkhorn corals, vibrant fish, and harmless rays, Sea Gardens turns underwater exploration into a fairy tale; while Pink House Reef – dotted with cup corals, starfish, and glowing, tropical species – makes for a magical adventure. Seeking less fairy tale, and more history? Swim through Cienfuegos or the Vanaheim, and you’ll be able to see some of the island’s more shallow shipwrecks.

Closure of long beach facility.

The marina we operate out of in Long Beach has not been able to negotiate a lease extension with the Hotel Maya and the hotel has decided to close the marina. We are therefore forced to close our Long Beach club and are in the process of moving the fleet back to San Diego. There are unfortunately no other marinas in the Long Beach/Los Angeles harbor that can accommodate the fleet along with an office to run the operation. We regret having to close the Long Beach club but at this point we have no other viable options. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call us at 619-291-7245 or email at [email protected]

Yacht Charter Harbour Island

On Harbour Island, the temperature always strikes a perfect balance, never veering too hot or too cold, creating an idyllic haven for those seeking pure paradise.

Harbour Island, lovingly referred to as Briland by its residents, is a true slice of paradise that leaves visitors enchanted and embraced by the warm hospitality of its people. This coral-rimmed island, a short distance from Eleuthera, boasts a mesmerizing pale pink hue thanks to the finely pulverized coral that adorns its shores, making it the ideal destination for a luxury Harbour Island yacht charter.

Enjoy quaint coastal charm on a Harbour Island yacht charter

Harbour Island exudes a quaint coastal charm, boasting picturesque New England-style architecture. Often referred to as the “Nantucket of the Caribbean,” this coastal gem is accessible solely by boat or ferry, adding an air of seclusion that makes it all the more special.

Perched along the serene eastern Atlantic Ocean side, Harbour Island has rightfully garnered the attention of luxury travel enthusiasts, who have elevated its status as a coveted spotlight destination. Prepare to embark on an extraordinary journey to this exquisite corner of the world, where beauty, tranquility, and coastal elegance converge in perfect harmony.

Explore Harbour Island on a luxury superyacht charter

At the heart of Harbour Island lies Dunmore Town, the island’s sole community, exuding New England-style charm with its colonial clapboard houses and vibrant architecture.

Despite being a stomping ground for the rich and famous, the island maintains an unassuming and down-to-earth atmosphere. The best way to fully explore the island’s offerings is by renting a golf cart or embarking on leisurely walks, immersing yourself in the vibrant surroundings. The island’s colorful architecture and rich history add an extra layer of allure to your journey.

Crystal-clear waters and incredible snorkeling and diving

Embark on a Harbour Island superyacht charter and immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters that beckon for exploration.

Just 0.6 miles south of The Glass Window Bridge from North Eleuthera, you’ll discover The Queen’s Baths, a collection of natural pools perfect for a relaxing soak in a natural sauna-like setting.

To further satiate your snorkeling desires during a Harbour Islands yacht charter, venture to the Devil’s Backbone at the northern end of Eleuthera. Here, a snorkeler’s paradise awaits, teeming with angelfish, snapper, stingrays, and awe-inspiring coral formations. Marvel at the remnants and ancient anchors of ships that succumbed to the jagged coral, creating a shallow diving experience ranging from five to thirty-five feet in depth.

The 'capital' of Great Abaco and the Abaco archipelago, Marsh Harbour is a major yacht charter destination thanks to the waters and islands nearby being the best sailing location in the Bahamas. It is a small city with everything you could want from one, only with a distinctly laid back, Bahamian feel.

Just 55 miles north of Nassau and with great facilities for boaters, Marsh Harbour sits on a lagoon on the east of Great Abaco, and is the perfect location for you to enjoy the 120 or so miles of coastline of the Abaco Islands. The second biggest international airport in the Bahamas is in Marsh Harbour, and its direct links to the US mainland and historical links to New England these are partly why it is such a popular spot with sailing types.

Explore Marsh Harbour By Renting A Yacht

Many going on a Marsh Harbour yacht charter choose to stay within these islands. Why? For water sports enthusiasts it seems that the Abaco islands with Great Abaco Island and Little Abaco at their center have it all. If game fishing is your bag then you should head over to Walkers Cay to the NW of Great Abaco where marlin and other game fish are in abundance.

Those who are into scuba diving or snorkeling will appreciate the coral reefs of Great Guana Cay, Tilloo Cay or Fowl Cay, all close to Marsh Harbour itself.

This part of the Bahamas was initially colonised by British Loyalist refugees during and after the US Revolutionary War in the 1700s. As such, there is a strong 'New England' feel to many of the towns like New Plymouth and Hope Town on Green Turtle Cay - those into culture and history can fill their boots too!

As to beach lovers? Where do you start?! Treasure Cay is one of the more famous vacation resorts but you will be hard pressed not to find one as good as Tahiti Beach on Elbow Cay, just across from Marsh Harbour.

For those a little more adventurous? Grand Bahama to the west and Exuma to the south are within a day's sail.

How To Get To Marsh Harbour

Leonard m. thompson international airport (mha).

Known locally by its original name (Marsh Harbour Airport) this is the second biggest in the Bahamas after Nassau. There are direct flights from North Carolina and Florida as well as domestic flights in from Nassau and other Bahama islands. For those flying from Europe this will mean a change of planes as there are no direct flights from the UK or Europe.

Marinas In Marsh Harbour

Across the Abaco island group there are dozens of marinas for different boats. There are two reasonably sized marinas in Marsh Harbour though there are a number of smaller affairs you may take a charter yacht from.

Abaco Beach Resort Marina and Boat Harbour:

One of the largest Bahamian marinas, Abaco Beach Resort is a major yacht charter hub with charter companies offering crewed and bareboat charter sailing catamaran, sailing yacht, luxury yacht charter and motor yacht rental.

Berth Characteristics:

Max Length 61m (200 Feet)

Max Draught 1.5m (5 Feet)

List of additional services: Shore power, water, WiFi, shower/WC, launderette, garbage disposal, cash machine, currency exchange, supermarket, restaurant.

Marsh Harbour Marina:

The smaller of the two important yacht charter hubs, Marsh Harbour Marina has charter companies offering crewed and bareboat charter sailing catamaran charter , sailing yacht charter , luxury yacht charter and motor yacht charter .

Max Length 36.5m (120 Feet)

Max Draught 1.8m (6 Feet)

List of additional services: Shore power, water, WiFi, shower/WC, launderette, garbage disposal, cash machine, restaurant.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Marsh Harbour

So, what do you want from a Bahamas yacht charter out of Marsh Harbour? Serious chill on a sandy beach? Snorkeling or scuba diving on a protected coral reef off your charter yacht? Your boat charter need not leave the Abaco islands to enjoy all of these.

7 Days - Abaco Cays and Islands: Leaving Marsh Harbour and heading east, you can spend the first night afloat off the colonial era town of New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay. Your second night can be at Coopers Town, another historic Bahamian town. After a good sail north then west, pop into Fox Town on Little Abaco for your third night. For night four you'll have sailed back down the channel to Treasure Cay Beach Hotel, Marina & Golf resort for its excellent restaurants. Back to chill again with your fifth night at Great Guana Cay, perhaps at Orchid Bay Marina. Return to base at Marsh Harbour after a sail south, perhaps visiting the nature reserve at Abaco National Park.

14 Days: On a 14 day Marsh Harbour yacht charter you can get as far SE as the salt and flamingo island of Inagua, island hopping through the Bahamas and pausing at places like Eleuthera, Cat Island, Crooked Island, Long Island and Exuma as you explore this fascinating yet extremely chilled part of the world. Get a taste for the local wilderness at West Side National Park close to Andros, before exploring Grand Bahama and then heading back to Marsh Harbour.

Best Times To Rent A Yacht In Marsh Harbour

Unlike Europe, the sailing season in the Bahamas runs from November to May - perfect for a dose of winter sun. The NE Trades are settled and you will encounter weather between 25-35 degrees C.

Within this period, March and April after the winter northerlies have passed are cooler yet the sailing is just as fun as the rest of the year.

For those who want to try something a little outside their comfort zone, August and September are said to be the very best sailing months of all.

There's a problem with this - many yacht charter fleets will not be in the area thanks to hurricane season that runs between July and November. If booked and a hurricane is on its way your vacation will be canceled. There is no minimising the danger of being in the region in a hurricane - there is no high ground and with the general trend for ever fiercer storms, it is not an experience to even risk being around for.

The Climate

North East Trade Winds : These are regular and can get up to F6 at times, but steady and predictable.

What should I consider when renting a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a captain, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Marsh Harbour?

There are currently two reasonably sized marinas in operation in Marsh Harbour - Abaco Beach Resort Marina and the smaller Marsh Harbour Marina. Being a boating mecca, you will find the fuel, repair facilities and comforts you need closeby.

When are the best times to rent a boat in Marsh Harbour?

Marsh Harbour is in the northern Tropics and this means blissful trade winds and comfortable temperatures year round. The cooler part of the year from November to May is better for yacht charters simply because the hurricane season coincides with the hotter and wetter part of the year. As ever, if serious chill is the name of the game, then come out outside of school vacations.

Do you have to pay a deposit when renting a Yacht in Marsh Harbour?

You will typically pay 50% up front on reservation the yacht rent and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I rent a Yacht or Boat in Marsh Harbour?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Dress for warm weather but do have something for tropical rains - light but waterproof.

What Qualifications Do I need to rent a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a captain on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Marinas and Yacht Harbours in Portugal

Portugal has founded its glory and wealth on the epic feats of expert navigators who set out from its shores to discover new lands. Along the hundreds of kilometers of its coastline are scattered ports of all kinds, including both busy commercial ports and marinas for tourist use.

Relive the charm of the epic maritime exploits of yesteryear by arriving at and departing from one of Portugal’s marinas . No adventures into the unknown, everything will take place in the utmost safety: the main marinas in Portugal are modern and well equipped. And if you do not have a boat in many locations you can rent one.

Having a boat (yours or rented) will allow you to discover hidden coves, enter sea caves, admire the shapes and colors of the cliffs along the coast, sunbathe lying on lonely beaches not accessible by land. In short, experience Portugal from a different and fascinating perspective, the most beautiful for those of you who love the sea, the sound of the waves, the coolness of the sea breeze.

Start planning your itinerary at sea by taking a look at which are the best marinas in Portugal . We have divided them by area (north and center, Lisbon and surroundings, south, islands), so you can find the right marina for you faster.

Marinas in northern and central Portugal

The best landing point in northern Portugal is the Marina of Viana do Castelo , near the mouth of the Lima River and only a 10-minute walk from the city center.

It is the first Portuguese marina one encounters when sailing south from Spain and is an excellent base to anchor the boat and explore the fascinating Minho region or sunbathe on a Costa Verde beach.

Going further south, you will encounter other well-equipped marinas around the Farol de Barra, the highest lighthouse in Portugal and an important reference point for all sailors.

You can dock in Carregal (near Ovar), in Torreira or in Figueira da Foz . The latter is a lively seaside resort with a huge beach and an old-fashioned atmosphere, with good connections to the cities of Coimbra, Porto or Lisbon and a lively nightlife. It is an ideal destination suitable for different types of travelers, with proposals for all ages.

The Marina of Figueira da Foz is located at the mouth of the Mondego River; the city center can be reached on foot in a few minutes.

Other marinas in northern and central Portugal are:

  • Póvoa do Varzim
  • Douro Marina in Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto)
  • Marina Porto Atlântico in Leixões (near Porto)
  • Marina Quinta da Barca in Esposende (province of Braga)

Marinas in Lisbon district

The Lisbon district and the surrounding areas offer many safe harbors. If you want to experience the thrill of arriving by boat in one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals, you can dock at the Parque das Nações Marina on the north bank of the Tagus River, in a modern area of the city redeveloped after the 1998 EXPO.

Oriente Station is just a 10-minute walk from the marina and offers excellent connections to the historic center, but you won’t need to travel far to find all the stores and services you’ll need, as well as some of Lisbon’s most famous tourist attractions.

If you prefer to dock in a seaside resort, the best choices north of Lisbon are the Marina of Cascais along the Estoril coast and the marina of Oeiras , located about halfway between Lisbon and Cascais.

To the south of Lisbon, however, we recommend the marina of Sesimbra , two kilometers from the city center. It is an ideal base for those who, after many hours of sailing, want to stretch their legs with fascinating excursions in the green Arrábida Natural Park; those who prefer to continue exploring by sea will be able to go in search of small coves and deserted beaches.

The marina of Sines is a convenient stop for those who then want to continue towards the Algarve.

Other marinas in the district of Lisbon and surroundings are:

  • Doca das Fontaínhas
  • Marina of Troia

Marinas in southern Portugal

Southern Portugal, and in particular the Algarve region, is another area rich in safe marinas and marinas with many services.

One of these is Vilamoura Marina , the oldest in Portugal, located in the central Algarve about 27 kilometers from Faro. Vilamoura is a very developed tourist resort founded in the seventies by a rich banker from Lisbon: in the surroundings of the marina there are many hotels, luxury villas, vacation homes, bars, restaurants, stores.

Other marinas of similar quality that you can find sailing along the Algarve coast from west to east are Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira, Olhão, Faro, Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos.

Other marinas in southern Portugal are:

  • Vila Nova de Milfontes

Marinas in the Portuguese islands

Those who want to go far beyond the coast of Portugal and reach the charming Portuguese islands in the Atlantic will not have any difficulty in finding a port where to dock, whether in the elegant island of Madeira or in the remote Azores islands.

We are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, so a good experience in navigation is required: but if you have the necessary skills, reaching the islands that were a port of call for the intrepid navigators of the Age of Discovery will be an unforgettable emotion.

The most exciting point of arrival is perhaps the Marina of Horta in the Azores (island of Faial), a colorful marina that has been embellished over time by paintings and drawings drawn by sailors arriving and departing.

Due to its location, it is a sort of obligatory stop for those crossing the Atlantic and this has made it become a sort of symbol for those who want to undertake challenging nautical enterprises.

In order to explore the beauty of this remote archipelago, you can stop at the marinas of Angra and Praia da Vitória on Terceira Island and at Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo on São Miguel Island.

In the Madeira archipelago, the best landing point is the lively port of Funchal , which welcomes boats of all sizes from all over the world.

Other marinas in the Madeira Islands and Azores:

  • Marina do Lugar de Baixo (Ponta do Sol)
  • Vila do Porto
  • Airport transfers

Urgent repairs called for at Māʻalaea Small Boat Harbor Ramp

yachts in a harbour

The Maui County Council has unanimously adopted a resolution urging the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to repair the Māʻalaea Small Boat Harbor Ramp.

The boat ramp is in disrepair, endangering public safety and making it unsafe for the US Coast Guard to launch its small vessels during low tide, according to the resolution. Also, after extensive damage from the Aug. 8 Lahaina wildfire shut down Lahaina Harbor, the Expeditions Lānaʻi-Maui ferry only operates out of Māʻalaea.

Council Chair Alice Lee introduced the resolution, after receiving a letter from Kalei Luʻuwai, vice commodore of the Māʻalaea Boat and Fishing Club.

According to a letter from Luʻuwai, the Māʻalaea boat ramp has not been maintained, and its current state of disrepair is “creating extremely dangerous conditions.”

Luʻuwai said recent run-off into the harbor has accumulated sediment on the ramp that has made it unusable for most vessels.

Also, there is a boat in the harbor taking on water that needs emergency repairs, but it is unable to be hauled out, according to Luʻuwai.

“If the boat remains in the harbor, it could eventually sink, causing marine damage within the harbor,” said Luʻuwai. “Another concern is the presence of a large object in the ramp that recently caused damage to a boat maneuvering within the ramp.”

After seeing copies of the Council resolution and Luʻuwai’s letter, the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation said dredging of the Māʻalaea launch ramp will require $4 million in funding and permits.

“Best case scenario is if funding is appropriated, the launch ramp may be dredged by the end of the year, but it all hinges on legislative funding,” the division said.

Senate Bill 2156, Senate Draft 1, calls for the state to appropriate a recurring $3 million in funding for DLNR to dredge small boat harbors, channels, ramps and other port infrastructure. The bill says the current system of waiting until dredging is imminent “creates a haphazard system” for allocating money and issuing permits.

However, in providing testimony strongly in favor of the bill, Dawn Chang, chair of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, did not list Māʻalaea among state harbors needing maintenance dredging on a regular basis. Her testimony included Lahaina Small Boat Harbor and Māla Wharf Channel in West Maui and small boat harbors and ramps on Hawaiʻi Island, Kauaʻi and Oʻahu.

The Senate bill crossed over to the House on March 5 and was scheduled to be heard today by the House Committee on Water and Land.

During Council consideration of the resolution last week, West Maui Council Member Tamara Paltin said that, with the Lahaina Harbor remaining closed, many boaters have no choice but to use Māʻalaea Harbor. Māla Boat Ramp in Lahaina was already overused before the fire, and some boats cannot use that ramp, she said.

Paltin said the situation is “serious,” and “it’s critical to keep especially Māʻalaea functional.”

“The Coast Guard is stationed at Māʻalaea,” she said. And, if Coast Guard personnel “can’t launch whenever they need to, then we’re in big trouble.”

Lānaʻi Council Member Gabe Johnson said infrastructure in Hawaiʻi is “crumbling,” and Māʻalaea Harbor is another example.

He reminded state officials responsible for maintaining Māʻalaea that, because the Lānaʻi-Maui ferry operates out of that harbor, federal funds would be available for harbor improvements.

“If we have any more emergencies; we are stacked on emergencies,” Johnson said. “If this harbor has any kind of malfunction, our first responders can’t get out there. The ferry takes our first responders out to Lānaʻi.”

Kahului Council Member Tasha Kama said repairs at Māʻalaea should be a priority.

“I’m kind of disappointed that we have to tell the state that they need to do their job, especially as the harbor is important to us,” she said.

A year ago, there were a couple of attempts by state lawmakers to address maintenance problems at Māʻalaea and other small boat harbors in the state.

House Bill 1318 and accompanying Senate Bill 1477 would transfer from DLNR to Maui County the operations and maintenance of Māʻalaea, Lahaina and Mānele small boat harbors, as well as the Kīhei and Māla boat ramps.

The bills were not passed last session. They were carried over to this year without action.

The measures acknowledge ongoing problems with the state’s management of the facilities.

“Maui’s small boat harbors have descended into complete disarray and are under-functioning in many different aspects,” the bills said. “The Legislature also finds that numerous repairs and maintenance projects at these small boat harbors remain uncompleted and services are performed on an ad hoc basis.”

In testimony opposing the bills in February 2023, Chang said that transferring small boat harbor facilities from the state to Maui County would only shift “the existing issues and challenges from one government entity to another with no plan in place to resolve those issues and challenges.”

She pointed out that small boat harbor and coastal areas programs were transferred from the state Department of Transportation to DLNR in 1991, along with a $300 million deferred maintenance backlog “with no immediate solutions for funding or reducing the backlog.”

“Since 1991, the department has worked to reduce the maintenance backlog by nearly half but cannot keep up with maintenance needs due to a combination of insufficient funding and rampant inflation,” Chang said.

Another measure, House Bill 1320 and accompanying Senate Bill 1475, would have required DLNR to create a strategic plan for maintenance dredging of important port and harbor locations and report the plan to the Legislature. It also would have required DLNR to complete at least two projects identified in the plan.

That bill also did not pass last year’s lawmaking session. It was forwarded to this year’s session, without action so far.

Dredging of boat harbor on track, but work not expected to start before July

Lawmakers and boaters hope for smooth sailing at the Wailoa Small Boat Harbor in Hilo as a long-awaited dredging project inches closer toward beginning.

The harbor, one of East Hawaii’s last functioning boat launches after the closure of the Pohoiki Boat Ramp during the 2018 eruption, has gone undredged for more than seven years, leading to a dangerous buildup of sediment in the harbor mouth that has substantially reduced the facility’s usability.

ADVERTISING

Boater Leilehua Yuen said that her late father’s boat has been stuck in the harbor for more than five years, and went aground at least three times attempting to pass the mouth of the Wailoa River — multiple times at high tide, no less.

“Once was midway through ebb-tide,” Yuen said via email “For several years, he could only go in and out at highest tide, which meant that if we took the boat out, we could not come back for either 12 or 24 hours. Since then, he went aground twice at high tide.

“For the past five years, we have been trapped in the basin, and could not take the boat out at all,” Yuen continued. “This winter’s storms have now made the harbor impassable for many other vessels, as well. This also means that boats needing to seek refuge in the basin from storms cannot come in to safe harbor.”

Thanks to $3.2 million in capital improvement funds allocated for the dredging during last year’s state budget cycle, some of the harbor’s woes are on track to be fixed later this year, although Hilo Sen. Lorraine Inouye said she is disappointed at the pace of the work.

“It shouldn’t have gotten this far,” Inouye said. “The burden is now on the public, on the boaters who have to deal with this problem.”

Inouye said she has been in constant contact with the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in attempts to expedite the dredging. However, she said the project is not anticipated to begin before July, which she said is too long for users to wait.

DOBOR Administrator Ed Underwood said the Army Corps of Engineers has appointed consultants who are currently conducting surveys to determine the scope of the dredging necessary. Once those surveys are completed, he said, and permit applications are finalized and submitted, contractors will be hired to carry out the actual dredging.

How long the dredging project will take will depend upon the results of the survey, Underwood said.

Although Underwood noted that DOBOR has “been asking for funding for this for years,” Inouye said that Hilo boaters can ill afford such essential work to be put off for years at a time, particularly when Big Island fishermen are more limited than ever in where they can launch from.

To that end, Inouye touted Senate Bill 2156, a measure she introduced this legislative session that would allocate funds to the DLNR for a scheduled program of maintenance dredges and other necessary work at all of the state’s small boat harbors and launches.

“It seems we only get these dredges to happen every few years, but it needs a consistent process,” Inouye said.

The Senate Committee on Water and Land — which Inouye chairs — voted Thursday to pass SB 2156 with little discussion, although she told the Tribune-Herald funding could still be hard to come by this year thanks to ongoing budget pressures from the Lahaina wildfires. Consequently, the bill does not include a specific dollar amount in its current form.

In the event that no additional funding is available, Inouye said she hopes the bill can still pass and establish a framework for a future schedule of maintenance work.

She added the DLNR could potentially establish a pilot program for a single island, and posited that between Wailoa, Pohoiki, Kawaihae and other Big Island facilities, Hawaii Island should be the prime candidate for such an enterprise.

“I just feel sorry for the people whose careers depend on being able to use these harbors,” Inouye said.

This many firefighters put out local cargo ship fire

ASHTABULA , Ohio (WJW) — It took 21 firefighters ten hours to extinguish a massive fire on a huge commercial vessel that caught fire in Ashtabula Harbor on Friday, according to Captain Stephen Chase with the Ashtabula Fire Department.

The Coast Guard said the Canadian vessel dubbed the “Cuyahoga” caught fire just before 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Coast Guard Ninth District.

“The fire largely involved the material handling equipment used in off-loading cargo from

the ships holds and the primary component of this equipment consists of massive rubber conveyor belts that run the length of the vessel.” Chase said.

“The Cuyahoga was in-port undergoing repairs and had both crew members and ship repair workers, totaling 39 people, on board at the time of the fire. Crews verified that all people who had been on-board at the time of the fire were accounted for and uninjured,” Chase said.

The Coast Guard also deployed boats and helicopters.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ashtabula Fire Department, the United States

Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board, according to Chase.
