What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

The cheapest yacht clubs charge just under $1,000 per year for membership. While this does give you access to different types of experiences, you may be disappointed by the overall amenities.

Some yacht clubs are known for their extravagant country club styles that help you to embrace a particular lifestyle. They include Olympic-sized swimming pools, state-of-the-art tennis courts, and fine dining.

Everything has a beautiful waterfront view. It can feel like you are in the middle of an idyllic paradise without ever even having to leave the shore. If this is what you can gain from the most expensive yacht clubs, you should set your expectations much lower for the cheaper yacht clubs.

The cheaper yacht clubs lack the community aspect of these exclusive options. They feature dry slips and the occasional party, but not much more.

Some of them may have the feel of a county park with some picnic benches, outdoor grills, and a moderately sized swimming pool. Expect a much more casual atmosphere when you choose to go with a cheaper yacht club.

It is even possible that they are simply “paper yacht clubs” that do not even maintain a physical building of their own.

How Much Do the Most Expensive Yacht Clubs Cost to Join?

The most expensive yacht clubs can vary a great deal in price. Most of them will cost between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. However, you can certainly find more exclusive clubs that will cost above and beyond this.

Keep in mind that these more expensive clubs generally are not open to the public. They are offered by invitation only and you must have a member sponsor you to be considered for entrance.

When you are paying for a more expensive yacht club, you should make sure that you are really going to get your money’s worth. These expensive clubs promote a certain type of elegant lifestyle.

Make sure that you are planning to take advantage of all the amenities available from one of these clubs before you sink too much money into the membership fees. The social aspect of these expensive yacht clubs is extremely important.

If you plan to simply rent a boat from time to time, you might be able to go with a cheaper yacht club.

What Is Generally Included in the Membership Fee for Yacht Clubs?

Have you been wondering why you should join a yacht club? Many potential members want to know what they can expect from their membership fees before they commit to a year-long contract. There are many advantages to signing up for a membership with a well-known yacht club.

Amenities and Activities

First and foremost, you get access to activities and cruises planned by board members. These might be various sailing activities, dinners, get-togethers, tennis matches, or other events that take up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

You also gain access to any amenities that surround the yacht club’s marina. For many programs, this means a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Several locations also offer fine dining, meeting rooms, and more.

It is like a private oasis where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Time moves slowly when you’re enjoying the amenities here.

Many yacht clubs have programs that introduce children (and adults!) to sailing. Take classes to learn more about improving your technique, sailing safety, and other important aspects of life on the open water.

Access to the Fleet

The main reason why most people join yacht clubs is to be able to rent out boats instead of purchasing their own. Joining a yacht club may give you access to an entire fleet of yachts that can be reserved for a day or weeks at a time. Some yacht clubs allow you to rent boats for up to ten days at a time.

Others do not allow you to rent out ships. They are primarily geared toward individuals who already own a yacht or will own a yacht in the future. Make sure you know the difference in advance.

Are There any Additional Costs Besides the Membership Fees?

Unfortunately, the membership fees are not the only cost associated with joining a yacht club. Most of the clubs in the United States also have a one-time initial fee that tends to cost thousands of dollars. Many will range from $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the location and the exclusivity of the yacht club.

This one-time fee should be the only additional money you pay except for fuel. Most yacht clubs do not cover the cost of the fuel used in the ship during your rental if renting is an option. Be prepared for what this could cost you.

If you cause damage to the ship, you can also expect some out-of-pocket costs. Insurance should cover the damage, but you will likely be asked to cover the cost of the deductible.

Be sure to inquire about how much you may be on the hook for before you sign up for any particular yacht club. Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced sailors. Make sure that you can afford the mishap in advance.

Is a Yacht Club Membership Right for You?

Understanding what the real cost of a yacht club membership is can be the first step toward determining if this is right for you. Many people love the luxuries available through the more expensive yacht clubs, but they may not be able to afford it. Consider what is most important in a club to you before deciding to sign on the dotted line for an annual membership.

Lovely day for hosting a function. The staff were attentive, polite and in control. There was a BBQ hosted dinner of burgers and hot dogs with salads. A bar was included It was a beautiful day and a perfect location. Thank you.

This is the club you want to join or visit as a guest. Very friendly atmosphere and guest and members are always warmly welcomed by an excellent staff. Visiting boaters will almost always be accommodated by the port captain... If you have children the pool and junior sailing program are the best on the west coast. Races always finish with a great after race party that all can enjoy. Entertainment on a regular basis on Friday nights... Not much more you could ask from a yacht club.

I went with my family to dinner tonight. The server Alex, was not attentive-he served us food without asking us what we'd like to drink. It took us several attempts to get anyone's attention. He asked about how and who would be paying for the meal before we were even done eating the main course. The food was mediocre-I got the mahi mahi. Alex was not the only waiter who was abrupt and brusque. When they were serving dessert it was like they were auctioning off the cakes, "who had the apple?! Birthday cake!" It felt like they were just trying to get us out of there asap.

Del rey yacht club offers elegance on the water, del rey yacht club supplies a slew of amenities for members..

Del Rey considers itself to be the premiere member-owned yacht club in Marina del Rey. It’s in a luxuriously appointed, mid-1960's facility with elegant décor. The club has more than three hundred slips, offered at below market rates to its more than 400 members.

“Unlike California Yacht Club, which is a for-profit facility, the members here are the owners,” member Barry Chass said. “With the exception of the maintenance staff and a few employees, all of the work here is done by volunteers who are members."

“We’re split 50-50 between power boaters and sailors. We’ve got members in boats all over the world who frequently check in with us on single sideband ham radios. We also have between one and two dozen live-aboards here at the club,” Chass said.

Find out what's happening in Marina Del Rey with free, real-time updates from Patch.

There are sweeping vistas of the marina from the club’s grand dining room, bars and lounges all of which can be booked by members for private parties. The club offers an Olympic-sized, solar-heated swimming pool with a patio and outdoor snack bar.

Del Rey has activities for fisherman and power boaters, and hosts several sailing regattas each year.

“Every other year, we sponsor a big race to Puerto Vallarta,“ Chass said.

The volunteer spirit extends among the members.

“We have a lot of very experienced sailors who are willing to share their experience and expertise, so it’s educational for the want-to-bes. The people with a lot of experience get to fill out their crews,” said member Bob Godfrey.

Del Rey also hosts a highly regarded summer youth sailing program.

“Each kid gets his own boat which he gets to name. They learn how to sail. They learn how to race,” Chass said. “They don’t have to be children of the members. They can be locals. You do not have to be a member of the club to enroll your child. We hold fundraisers and offer scholarships for kids who can’t afford the program.”

I can personally vouch for the school's activity. Several times, the students whipped their Sabots up and around the stern of my Cal 25 that was moored right across the basin from the club.

As the skipper of a Catalina 270, Chass is very proud of the youth sailing program.

“With some of the better kids, we’ll send them to Australia and Europe to compete,” he said.

The club is also actively involved in getting special needs and under privileged kids on the water to fish.

For those who enjoy Catalina Island, the club leases a facility at Cat Harbor with barbecues, restrooms, hot showers, ice, a full galley and seating for 250 and shade. Chass againg draws a contrast here with California Yacht Club, which just walked away from its lease.

“It cost us significantly more, but we’re locked in for five more years,” he said.

If you’re interested in joining, the buy-in is akin to joining a country club.

“The initiation fee is $5,000, but if you decide to leave someday, we can sell that membership for you. You’ll get $3,000 back,” said Fred Rapp, another member.

“I have been a member of three or four yacht clubs. This is the best I’ve been in. It has the right people. They have the right attitude. Here over the years, I’ve met people who have become lifelong friends,” Sterling Tallman said.

If the sketch presented here whets your appetite, call to schedule a tour.

COMMODORE'S MESSAGE

Year 2023 is turning out to be a great year to serve as the Commodore of Del Rey Yacht Club. I am very honored to have the opportunity to stand at the helm, ready to “SEAS today, launch tomorrow” per my theme. With the couple of Covid-impacted years behind us, the excitement at the Club is palpable as our members step out into the Southern California sunshine and set sail or cruise with their friends and families. Our William Berger/William Stein sailboat races have started; our Junior Sailors are preparing for the Mid-Winter Opti’s. Whether its participating in the Club’s educational or social events; jumping in the pool; fishing; playing pickleball, mahjong, or cards; or relaxing with a glass of wine, our members and their guests are enjoying DRYC’s many amenities. Members are reuniting with each other, new members are joining, and Del Rey Yacht Club is reconnecting with the Marina del Rey and yachting communities in significant ways. For example, this year we are welcoming officers and dignitaries from other yacht clubs and the community to our Opening Day 2023 Ceremony and Celebrations which we hope will be spectacular! Dedicated to the principles and traditions of Corinthian yachting, in one of the most beautiful manmade marinas in the world, this Club is a gem. What makes this Club so special is that it is owned, operated, and managed by volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to making sure DRYC continues to be the premier yacht club our members have come to enjoy. At DRYC we have a revolving door of leadership, with each team bringing new talents, fresh ideas, and boatloads of energy to the table for addressing the issues of the day while keeping our Club on a steady course and guiding us forward. With myself as Commodore at the Club’s helm this year is Vice Commodore Roger Friedman and Rear Commodore Dir. Jeff Pielet, along with our Bridge and Board of Directors who work closely with our Committee Chairs that run the events. We also have an active Auxiliary with a long legacy. In addition, we are fortunate to have an excellent staff of employees dedicated to serving the needs of our members and guests with hospitality and professionalism. Together we are an energetic team committed to keeping our Club on course for a Great DRYC 2023! Del Rey Yacht Club was founded in 1952 “to promote and encourage, as its primary function and purpose, an interest in amateur yachting in all its phases..." And since that time, our members have dared to dream big. As a result, we are proud of our recreational boating facilities here in Marina del Rey and Cat Harbor on Catalina Island, and our active junior and adult sailboat racing programs, cruising opportunities, Club-owned J-22’s, Lido 14, kayaks, paddleboards, and Duffy that Flag, Mariner, and Intermediate members can rent. We also have fine food and beverage services, and a beautiful facility in Cat Harbor called Shultz Landing that is just the right distance from the Club to provide a beautiful day sail or cruise to our destination. All our member-managed events and social activities keep our Club active, vibrant, and relevant to meet the changing needs of our diverse membership. My theme for 2023 is “SEAS Today, Launch Tomorrow.” Remembering our history and building on our traditions, we stand on the shoulders of the Club’s founding fathers and mothers embracing our diverse and inclusive membership and enjoying our Club’s offerings today while making decisions and taking actions that will move us forward toward better tomorrows. Together, as we look out—not from our boats’ stern, but from its bow—to the North Star, or to that which lies ahead, we can enjoy today as we imagine and work toward this Club’s Bright Future. With an understanding of the Club’s Past, an appreciation for its Present, and a desire to work toward its Bright Future, our strength is in our ability to enjoy the sea, boating, dining, partying, racing, cruising, volunteering, and each other—to make 2023 a great year for DRYC! Remember the proverb, "There are good ships and wood ships, ships that sail the seas, but the best ships are friendships, may they always be!" Thank you.
