Wider 150 superyacht: inside the build of Wider's new boundary-pushing 46m

After catching the yachting world’s attention in 2012 with the surprising and innovative Wider 42, Tilli Antonelli, founder and CEO of the Wider yard, is again pushing back the boundaries. Stepping into superyacht territory he has built a vessel at once novel, efficient, functional, enjoyable and eye-catching. Asked what sets the Wider 150 apart from the competition, the Italian answers: ‘Everything.’

The Wider 150 concept was first presented during the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show, but has since undergone significant changes and improvements. The original plan was to build in composite, a material familiar to both Antonelli and designer Fulvio De Simoni, who has designed the whole Wider range. But it was decided aluminium would better fit the project’s overall philosophy and offer more design advantages.

Antonelli tells BI : ‘The key points to the project were a medium-sized dimension; contemporary yet timeless style; low consumption diesel-electric advanced propulsion coupled to Azipods; and a layout that breaks the rules for its unconventional use of spaces, namely the beach club area/tender garage, which was one of the ideas the project developed from. Our aim was to build an efficient displacement yacht in all respects and the Wider 150, with a length of 46 metres, a beam of 8.53 and a maximum draught of less than two metres, while offering an array of amenities and large liveable spaces, can also hug the coast and enter small harbours, marinas and bays.’

Diesel-electric propulsion was chosen not only because it offers reliability and efficiency, but also for the comfort and convenience it provides. The system is modular and features great flexibility thanks to four variable-speed diesel generators that can operate independently. All the energy sources are managed by the Wider Management System that controls the power supplied by the generators, shore-power and battery packs, distributing it among all the onboard systems. Touchscreen pads will be positioned on board so the captain or owner can choose the operational mode, from zero emission using only the battery packs, up to top speed with all four generators online.

‘Whatever the cruising mode, the fuel consumption levels are very low. She can cruise smoothly and silently in zero emission mode, on battery power alone, for eight hours at five knots,’ Antonelli says proudly.

‘Conventional yachts run generators at a fixed speed, burning fuel at a fixed rate, regardless of the load,’ he continues. Wider’s system runs at the speed necessary in that very moment. The current created by the generators will power both the propulsion and the hotel systems on board. Any excess power recharges 52 lithium polymer batteries.’

One main goal was to reduce the fuel consumption through better propulsive efficiency. The Wider’s Azipods, coupled to electric engines delivering 531kW each, feature two contra-rotating propellers that help increase efficiency by about 10 per cent while granting excellent course-keeping and manoeuvrability. This also leads to a long service interval, reduced noise and vibration and an increased range of about 4,200 nautical miles at 11 knots. At the 150’s top speed of 15 knots, the yacht can navigate non-stop for 2,000 nautical miles.

‘Since energy is carried by cable to the Azipods, there was no need for a large engine room amidships,’ Antonelli explains. ‘On the Wider 150, by splitting the technical areas between the bow and stern, 25 per cent more space is left for the guest cabins and the yacht can host a [9.7 metre] tender in the stern garage.’ The generator room is at the bow and the battery packs are astern in two compartments on either side of the tender garage which, once the tender is out, becomes a swimming pool surrounded by a beach club.

‘I cannot say that this beach area encompassing a swimming pool is the first of its kind, but it is unique for its peculiar opening system,’ Antonelli says. ‘We have excluded a side opening as it would not have been as reliable as it is from the transom and also because we liked the idea of having a great saltwater swimming pool protected from any danger in the middle of the ocean.

‘The most challenging part was the engineering of the hatch, which we decided to make in two elements. We spent countless hours researching the most reliable and efficient mechanisms for the beach club,’ Antonelli confirms. ‘When the tender exits, the hatch opens completely, then the lower section closes again protecting what becomes a pool, while the upper segment stays open to give access and light to the beach club.’ On each side, fold-down balconies connected to the stern platform double the available space at sea level.

From the beginning, the project included a tender matching the yacht’s style and spirit. The Wider 32 superyacht tende r was conceived as the Wider 150 took shape and it is as extraordinary as its mothership. Twin 260hp MerCruiser engines allow a top speed exceeding 37 knots, while the exterior styling by De Simoni leaves you in no doubt that this design has been produced to impress and perform.

When we visit the Wider 150, the V-shape of the tender bay set into the hull is clearly visible from the rear of the yacht as the stern section is still to be welded to the ship’s body. On the opposite end, the almost vertical bow ends with a protruding bulb to reduce drag. The hull shape, developed in collaboration with Sydac, makes the most of the yacht’s length and beam. For stability, five inboard Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilisers have been used instead of external fins, to further limit drag.

Construction

Inside its modern build shed, the yacht’s naked hull shows the quality of the metalwork and welds. Three of the superstructure’s five sections have been lifted into place and the interior bulkheads belowdecks secured. ‘The superstructure is divided into five sections to facilitate handling and assembling procedures,’ explains project manager Juan Jose Balaguer. Aluminium alloy 5083 was chosen for its qualities as a lightweight, strong and long-lasting material. This alloy has a weight of only 2.66 grammes per cubic centimetre compared to steel’s 7.8 grammes per cubic centimetre, giving the 46 metre yacht a displacement of just 355 tonnes.

‘Aluminium helps to lower the vessel’s environmental footprint, and it can be recycled again and again,’ Antonelli says. ‘It also provides greater freedom during construction as it increases the opportunity to customise and considerably shortens production times.’

As we climb the scaffolding to the main deck, Antonelli points out the peculiarities of the interior and exterior layout. Continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces was an issue of the utmost importance.

‘This is an approach we developed with the Wider 42,’ De Simoni says. ‘Lately, large yachts look like cruise ships where passengers are kept far away from the water, but the philosophy for the Wider 150 is mainly the same as the Wider 42. We learned to manage the interior areas more freely, focusing on attaining the greatest integration between the yacht and the surrounding environment.

‘This is a yacht with extraordinary proportions’, De Simoni points out, ‘akin to those of the elegant vessels of the beginning of the 20th Century, but with a style that follows no fashion trend, characterised by clean lines and taut, smooth surfaces.’

Throughout development, changes have been made to improve liveability and smooth exterior lines. The beam was enlarged from 7.8 to 8.53 metres, bulkheads moved for better access to upper side decks, bulwarks lowered and windows enlarged to give the interior better views.

The master suite, featuring large windows drawing in a huge amount of natural light, can be split into two separate areas by closing a sliding partition. Aft of the owner’s cabin a studio/lounge area benefits from a beautiful fold-down terrace overlooking the waves.

All Wider projects feature a moment of design magic, and on the 150 a section of foredeck raises up at the touch of a button to become a light yet robust roof protecting a properly equipped lounging area. Good spatial planning like this is a feature on the Wider 150, from the open-plan saloon on the main deck to the saloon on the upper deck (as pictured below).

‘We decided to make every effort to find the necessary resources in terms of investment, setting, structures and team, to give it a start,’ says Antonelli. ‘We presented the project in September 2011 and a year later signed the first sales contract with the Malaysian entrepreneur Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay. He was so enthusiastic about the project and the company that he became a Wider partner. This gave us the means to start construction in August 2013.’

The first Wider 150’s launch is scheduled for summer 2015. Plans to build 50m superyacht Wider 165 were announed at Miami yacht show . Something is always brewing at this exciting company, and you can expect more Wider projects to come, but details must wait. But if the Wider 32, 42 and 150 are anything to go by, Antonelli is going to keep pushing boundaries and keep hitting us with those ‘wow’ moments.

She was additionally awarded a special commendation prize for Technology and Innovation, in recognition of the Diesel Electric Propulsion System combined with the intelligent layout and use of the forepeak for the four variable speed generators to create more usable guest areas in the mid-ship.

The key advantages of the WIDER 150 over other similar, full displacement vessels in the size bracket include:

3.         A 32’ Rigid Tender  – unique in this size range, more usually only available on yachts of 65m+. This offers the owner additional freedom to enter small bays and creeks.

7.         Diesel Electric with Azimuthal pod   Propulsion  system coupled with 544kw battery bank  – Proven technology in the commercial and military markets as well as very large yachts, the only yacht of its size with this type of propulsion system and battery storage.

The advantages of this system over traditional propulsion include:

·           Ability to run solely on battery power for a full night or whilst using the beach club in complete silence –  no noise or smoke or smell, just the sound of the waves lapping up against the side of the hull

·           Fuel Efficiency and thus extended cruising range – just 70 lt per hour at 10kts offering 4800 mile range

·           Shallow draft – 6ft 5in – Allows access to more areas, including Bahamas

·           Increased reliability – electric motors have less moving parts and are less prone to failure

·           Reduced maintenance - Because of the efficient use of the generators by the power management system, generator hours are reduced meaning that the time between overhaul is extended

Hybrid-Powered WIDER 150 "Bartali"

Wider yachts presents a great motor yacht: the 46m bartali (ex-genesi) of the wider 150 range..

BARTALI is the first WIDER superyacht. The aluminum yacht features a hybrid propulsion and a floating garage perfect for the WIDER 32 . The yacht offers more than 350 m² of outside areas.

Fulvio de Simoni  designed the in collaboration with the WIDER CEO Tilli Antonelli and the in-house design team.

“The extra time in the main shed allowed us to push ahead with the interior… it is now 90% complete. I have launched dozens of yachts in my career but have never done so with this level of completion to the interior outfitting… this will save us time in the final commissioning”

“It is enormously satisfying to see “Genesi” in the water for the first time” says Tilli Antonelli, Wider Founder and CEO. “But now we have the important task of checking that everything is working to the same high standards that we have set ourselves in every other aspect of the construction process. We believe that this can be done in 8-10 weeks but will not rush anything if it means compromising on the quality of the finished yacht…We will make sure that she is 110% finished before unveiling her in full to the market.”

The tender garage, pool and beach club area

The floating tender garage is also a 7-meter indoor seawater swimming pool when the tender is out. The stern area transforms into an impressive 90m² beach club. Another tender storage is at the foredeck area.

The interior features a full-beam owner’s suite of 75 m² with en-suite bathroom and a 5.6 m² folding balcony.

Four guest en-suite cabins are located on the lower deck. There are two VIP and two standard cabins. The crew is also housed on the lower deck in four twin cabins and the crew mess. The captain has a cabin next to the wheelhouse.

The WIDER 150 has a price of about 26 Mio. EUR.

Inside Out Wider 150 with Yacht Broker David Seal

Northrop & Johnson Yacht Broker David Seal explores the beauty of the new WIDER 150 from the inside out.

There is nothing quite like a global financial crisis to shake things up and make us re-evaluate what we are doing and, more importantly, how we are doing it. This is glaringly obvious in the yacht building industry, which, in the last few years, has seen a host of famous brands disappear from sight or re-emerge having changed hands at a relatively low price.

That said, however, the finest diamonds are formed under the greatest pressure and the same demands that have crippled some builders have given birth to new brands that may otherwise never have seen the light of day. The premier example is Wider Yachts, located on the charming and rustic east coast of Italy . Here, in a purpose-built shipyard under the noses of some of yachting’s biggest brands, a 150-foot is being built that promises to remodel expectations and aspirations of many yacht owners.

Consider that the WIDER 150 is a motor yacht without an engine room — something achievable only because the yacht has no engines. On the surface, it may appear that there is a major flaw in this concept, but before dwelling upon the benefits of an engine room, think for a moment about the drawbacks. Most engine rooms are located amidships in the widest and most voluminous area of the hull. They take up valuable space that could otherwise be used for larger cabins, a bigger tender or both. In the case of the WIDER 150, not only are the guest cabins larger than on many other 150-foot yachts, but the reclaimed area is used to house a custom-built 32-foot tender, which offers classic looks, making it seem like it was designed for the movie “League of Gentlemen”. When the tender is launched, the transom’s rear and sides open up and the tender bay fills to create a splendid swimming pool/spa.

The yacht has a high plumb bow, but the bow’s height is far more than simply a design feature to add to the vessel’s visual impact. A high bow creates high bulwarks, and the high bulwarks in turn hide a superstructure that extends remarkably far forward, allowing for a palatial owner’s suite and bathroom on the main deck. All of this is done without spoiling the fluid lines of the vessel – yacht designer Fulvio di Simoni is renowned for this.

The upper deck also is remarkably well designed. The beam here actually is greater than the main deck, allowing for full walk-around decks and a surprisingly spacious skylounge. The aft deck on this level is spacious enough for a steel band and an entourage of Caribbean dancers, if that takes your fancy. Otherwise, guests simply can enjoy the vast deck space, which is refreshingly uncluttered by tenders and other watersports toys. Those all can be found in a reserved space below the main foredeck, where a boom crane can quickly launch them via a side-opening hatch.

For most yacht owners, deck space is as important, if not more important, than interior volume, and it is clear that Wider understands this. Tilli Antonelli, the founder and president of Wider, has worked closely with di Simoni to extend the sundeck as far aft as is aesthetically acceptable to maximize this area. Together they have equipped it with a well-proportioned Jacuzzi and a barbecue station. If this is not far enough from the steel band for your taste, a very generous seating area is carved into the superstructure and benefits from a custom-designed hydraulic sun awning.

The WIDER 150 will accommodate up to 10 guests in five exceptional staterooms, including an on-deck master suite that opens on to a terrace and four additional staterooms. Her interior will feature contemporary décor and chic lines. Now to address the elephant in the room: the lack of engines. The WIDER 150 has a power generator room in the bow, where four variable-speed generators are mounted on silent blocks in a purpose-built suspension cage. The generators produce more than sufficient energy to power both the propulsion system and an entire hotel load. A thick cable leads to two banks of lithium polymer batteries and then on to the electric motors that run the pod propellers.

The WIDER 150 is likely to be branded with words like “innovative” and “cutting edge,” but the truth is that this impressive technology is already in use on submarines, military craft and commercial liners, all of which have been running on diesel electric for many years. What is innovative, however, is that Wider has taken the necessary steps to apply this proven technology to a 150-foot motor yacht, a fact made possible by the advancements in battery technology. Lithium polymer batteries are actually a small fraction of the weight of traditional gel batteries but are many times more powerful. The batteries’ warranties remain for a fixed number of cycles, corresponding to about 10 years of normal use.

Wider will launch the WIDER 150 summer 2015, and if the forecasts for her range and efficiency prove true, she could be the best thing to come out of the GFC yet.

Wider 150 Yacht is Sold

Wider Yachts has announced the sale of a Wider 150 superyacht .

“We are thrilled that our new line of unique yachts are getting the recognition we believe they deserve,” Tilli Antonelli, CEO and founder of Wider, stated in a press release. “The new owner was attracted to the range of features we have included on board, particularly the diesel-electric propulsion system, which offers such a quiet mode of operation, something the new owners value extremely highly.”

The Wider 150 is an all-aluminum yacht with design by Fulvio De Simoni in collaboration with Antonelli and the Wider team.

Notable features: The Wider 150 has a 23-foot swimming pool, an 800-square-foot master stateroom and the ability to run on battery power alone. The yacht has earned multiple awards since her debut.

WIDER 150 GENESI: A 100% ELECTRIC SUPER YACHT

After Cannes and Genoa, Wider 150 Genesi will take part to Monaco Boat Show , too (September 28- October 1).

Tilli Antonelli , founder and CEO of Wider, a dynamic visionary businessman, has struck again. This time, his proposal is a 47-metre superyacht with huge interiors and exteriors, large balconies and lateral gangways, an astern beach club and a fore lounge which appears under a large rigid T-top.

But what really makes this vessel innovative is something you can’t see: Wider 150 is a 100% electric superyacht. Yes, since Tilli Antonelli doesn’t like “halfway or hybrid things”.

A real challenge if you consider that the owners of this kind of boats have no time and don’t like troubles.

The “heart” of Wider 150 is made up of four generators which produce alternating current and convert it into continuous current. Since there are no mechanical constraints, the engine room is divided into two different compartments: a fore power generator room and an astern technical room, where lithium batteries are located (52 batteries for a total range of 544 Kwh). The choice to separate the engine room has allowed to free the central part of the hull to the benefit of larger guest cabins in the most stable point of the yacht. The energy produced by the generators is later transmitted to the double-propeller AziPods which push Genesi up to a maximum speed of 14 knots and a cruising one of 13. In terms of consumption, Wider 150 ensures great performances: just 68 l/h at 10 knots, all services included.

“I’m extremely satisfied with the recognition achieved by Wider 150/01 because this proves the important work done by the whole team involved into her planning and construction process. It’s in no way enough to replace diesel engines with an electric system to reach this target; on the contrary, a long series of advanced details and arrangements are required, such as special soundproof materials, anti-vibration treatments and much more”, says Tilli Antonelli.

Another smart idea is the astern tender garage (it can host a 32′ tender). When the tender is out, the garage can be converted into a beach club equipped with an indoor seawater swimming pool. The pool has the same shape than the motor boat bottom and it is made of the same materials used on military boats.

Finally, there’s a huge fore lounge area. While sailing, it’s invisible since it’s hidden under a watertight hatch integrated in the deckhouse. When it’s needed, four hydraulic pistons lift the hatch and the huge lounge appears.

Wider 150 is a displacing yacht, totally made of aluminium, designed by Fulvio De Simoni, Tilli Antonelli and Wider designers.

All this is aimed at broadening contact with the marine environment, allowing an easier path to exploration in your cruising, but with minimal detriment to the planet’s resources. At the same time the propulsion is space saving creating more useable space and making for a far more superior superyacht, metre for metre. The architecture of this 50-metre superyacht is such that the power generator room is well forward in the bow whereas the LiPo batteries are in a technical area of the stern. All possible because energy is transferred to the azimuthal thrusters via flexible wiring replacing traditionally positioned rigid drive shafts. The WIDER 165 combines  style, design, genius  and very  real solutions  that improve on-board life.

The Wider beach club

The WIDER Beach Club has some of the most generous measurements of any other in the market in comparison with similar length yachts. As a result, you can enjoy moments of pure relaxation in close contact with the sea. There are two platforms on either side that drop down at water level. The hangar, with an indoor salt water pool, can host a tender such as the WIDER 32, and a submarine or, alternatively, a spa. + Plenty of space dedicated to relaxation + Easy access to the sea + 8m indoor salt water pool + 32’ rigid tender + Submarine for three people

Hybrid Powertrain

Serial hybrid propulsion

The WIDER 165 is equipped with a serial hybrid propulsion system and azimuthal thrusters, a system with four generators controlled by a smart power management system in conjunction with the very latest cutting-edge battery technology. The power produced runs the yacht and all the hotel functions bringing about many advantages, from greatly reduced consumption to highly increasing the cruising range. The traditional engine room has been replaced by a more flexible structure allowing the use of the central part of the hull for accommodation, so more spacious guest cabins can be designed at the heart, and the most stable zone, of the yacht. A Power Generator Room is in the bow and a Technical Room in the stern where the lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries are housed. Only possible because the power is transferred to the azimuthal thrusters via flexible wiring replacing the rigid drive shafts. All the on-board power sources are controlled by the Power Management System (PMS) developed by WIDER with Nidec Industrial Solutions, a market leader in the field of energy technologies. The system is fully integrated with the superyacht and handles the power coming from shore, the generators and the battery packs, and distributes it to the hotel functions, the propulsion system and the battery recharge system as required. The entire propulsion system is completely modular: the WIDER 165 can be run exclusively by the batteries in Zero Emission Mode (ZEM) or by activating up to four in-line diesel generators. Cabins and living area

Wide floor-to-ceiling windows envelop the lounges of the main deck, allowing natural light to pleasantly illuminate the spacious living areas and allow magnificent views of the yacht’s surroundings. One of the most exceptional features on board can be found in the area reserved for the owner: an apartment that extends across the complete beam of the yacht with two private balconies overlooking the sea. On the main deck, as well as a spacious lounge again with full height windows making it extremely bright, there is a gym and a sauna. On the upper deck, there is the Sky Lounge and a dining area with sliding doors, which once retracted create the feeling of an open but sheltered alfresco dining area. On the lower deck there are four spacious guest cabins all with bathrooms; two of them double VIP cabins and two twin cabins. A large cabin on the upper deck adjacent to the wheelhouse is reserved for the captain. Crew members have four twin cabins in the lower deck, along with the wide crew mess. These cabins are on either side of a central corridor with direct access to the engine room in the bow and away from guest cabins. Entertainment

The beach club of the WIDER 165 is an ideal hangar for a designer tender like the WIDER 32, due to the ease with which the floating launching system makes exit and entry manoeuvres with the tender possible. The submarine will also be stowed here and likewise the launch and retrieval is simple for the crew. The maximum speed of the WIDER 165 is 14 knots. At a cruising speed of 13 knots, the yacht is estimated to have a range of 3,100 nautical miles that rises to 5,400 at an eco-speed of 10 knots. The yacht has the ability to run just on its battery power in Zero Emission Mode with silent cruising at a reduced speed of 5 knots. This is the ideal selection for short trips or in order to cast off early in the morning ensuring the utmost quiet with no generators needing to be started. + Zero vibrations and noise + Reduced emissions + Zero Emission Mode + Completely modular PMS + A range of well over 5000 nautical miles

The Wider 165 propulsion system is completely modular, the yacht able to run solely on batteries in Zero Emissions Mode (ZEM) or by activating up to four in-line diesel generators. This allows for the greatest navigation range while limiting fuel consumption.

September 17 was marked by meeting of the UFI Executive Committee. During the event, the Committe approved the admission of Crocus Expo IEC as a full member of UFI in categories of “Exhibition Organizers” and “Exhibition Centres. Moscow Boat Show has been granted the status of “UFI Approved Event”.

Moscow Boat Show

UFI, The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry is the association of trade show organizers, fairground owners, national and international associations of the exhibition industry, and its partners. As of 2012, it has 608 members in 224 cities from 86 countries covering 6 continents. The association members are responsible for the management and operation of over 4 500 profile events. The association represents more than 1 000 000 of exhibitors and more than 150 000 000 visitors.

The Crocus Expo Exhibition Centre is a listed member of the International Association of Congress Centres (AIPC), the Russian Union of Exhibitions and Fairs, the Guild of Exhibition and Fair Operators by the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Donald Tramp fund has awarded Crocus Expo IEC Diamond Excellence Award.

Crocus Expo IEC is an ideal venue for running of large international and national exhibitions of different profile including congress events, conferences and scientific symposiums.About 50% of all exhibition events of Moscow take place in Crocus Expo and average exposition space load comprises 85%.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
