7 British Yacht Design Studios You Need To Know About

Written by Brodie Hayward - Wednesday, December 30, 2020

When it comes to superior yacht design, the UK is a force to be reckoned with. The nation’s maritime history and longstanding design pedigree have given rise to a vibrant and high-calibre industry renowned the world over.

Many stalwarts of the exclusive British yacht design scene have been around for the best part of a century, having masterminded exquisite architecture and interiors for many thousands of vessels during that time. And many newer entrants to the market have proven that innovative thinking can transform how we look at traditional design, too.

Let’s look at 7 of the best British yacht design studios you need to know about.

1.  Winch Design

London-based Winch Design – named after its founder, Andrew Winch – is one of the global yacht design market’s most influential players.

Founded in 1986, the studio employs over 100 people – and over the last 35 years, it has amassed a portfolio of the world’s most exquisite yachts. Winch Design also works across land and sea, with numerous private jets and multi-million-pound properties to its name.

Its notable projects include the 99m Madame Gu, which won Superyacht of the Year 2014 at the World Superyachts Awards in Amsterdam. The team also designed the strikingly beautiful interior of the Cloud 9 ( recently sold and now named Lady Jorgia ) a 74m yacht which features helipad, spa and swimming pool.

2.  Terence Disdale Design

Terence Disdale is another legend of the yacht design world. Often dubbed the “Rockstar” of the industry, Disdale and his Richmond-upon-Thames studio are behind many of the most famous and celebrated superyachts today.

His 40-year career began in notably humble fashion, as he didn’t receive any formal training in yacht design. Instead, he was tutored by the iconic Jon Bannenberg, whose studio also paved the way for several other leading designers, including Andrew Winch.

Disdale’s more casual style – with his famous mantra of “beach-house not penthouse” – continues to be highly sought-after. This can be seen in the 53.5m Hurricane Run .

3.  Design Unlimited

Founded in 2000, Design Unlimited provides an innovative take on traditional yacht design and has won awards for its fresh approach.

One look at the sailing yacht, Pink Gin VI will tell you all you need to know about the team’s quirky ethos. Design Unlimited’s founder, Mark Tucker, boasts an impressive CV, having cut his teeth at Camper & Nicholson’s Yachts and worked his way up the ranks at Ken Freivokh Design before taking the plunge with his own consultancy.

Custom projects include the 65m Shemara , in which the team completely refitted a 1930s gentleman’s motoryacht. It brought the entire vessel up to modern standards, while retaining her classic charm.

4.  Seymour Diamond

Fiona Diamond’s eponymous studio is called upon by clients the world over to design the interiors of not only superyachts, but also luxury property and aircraft. Diamond worked closely with Terence Disdale for many years before launching her Mayfair-based company in 2010.

Despite being a relative newcomer within the yacht design industry, the business is making a name for itself as the go-to interior specialist of choice. Seymour Diamond prides itself on a hands-on approach and exquisite attention to detail. It recently worked on the 92.5m Royal Romance , which cost upwards of $200 million.

5.  Adam Lay Studio

Founded in 2003 in Stockbridge, Adam Lay Studio is a boutique design house that has won countless awards for its iconic projects.

Mentored by John Munford for seven years, another noted custom superyacht designer, Lay has built a reputation for discretion. He also prides himself on truly getting under the skin of client briefs, to not only deliver what owners are looking for – but to exceed their expectations.

The studio’s projects include the Lady Kathryn V , an ornately styled superyacht that evokes the classic and timeless elegance of years gone by.

6.  Bannenberg & Rowell Design

The name Bannenberg holds a lot of sway in the world of superyacht design. Jon Bannenberg is considered the Grandfather of the modern industry, having pioneered an entirely new aesthetic in the 1960s which is still adhered to today.

And it’s clear the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Bannenberg & Rowell, now arguably one of – if not the – most famous yacht design studios in the world, was set up by the late Jon’s son, Dickie and his business partner, Simon Rowell. Despite being a company steeped in history, the team remains at the forefront of cutting-edge creativity, working with each client to create something that perfectly matches their style.

Notable projects include the award-winning 65m Galactica Star, a £50 million superyacht which was chartered by Beyoncé and Jay-Z for a holiday in 2015.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bannenberg & Rowell (@bannenberg_and_rowell_designs)

7.  Gresham Yacht Design

Founded by Bahamas-born Steve Gresham, the Gresham Yacht Design studio is now based a little closer to home, in Hampshire.

Having originally worked as part of the engineering team at Williams Formula 1, Gresham moved into superyacht design and launched his studio in 2013. Utilising his keen eye for detail, alongside a desire to continually innovate, Gresham’s work is renowned for its technical excellence. The studio often collaborates with Seymour Diamond, with the former leading on yacht design and the latter handling the interior fit-out and finishing touches.

Gresham’s most famous work includes the MV Alucia, a luxury, 56m research and exploration yacht that played a key role in filming footage for BBC’s Blue Planet II.

These are the Yacht Interior Designers to Know

Designing a superyacht is a personal experience and involves making an overwhelming amount of choices.

By Sophie Killip

superyacht designers uk

For those seasoned individuals who have experience chartering yachts , visiting friends’ yachts, sailing the high seas, or maybe even purchasing their first pre-designed yacht, the next thrill might come from building their own vessel. Although designing your own superyacht is a truly personal experience, it also involves making an overwhelming amount of choices. This is why the first step to building a new superyacht should always be to choose a designer to work with – and there are several yacht interior designers you can choose from.

Whether it’s considering how the internal spaces of your yacht will work, what furniture or materials are used, or even working out the external design for your new vessel, collaborating with a designer will make the process of creating your dream superyacht as stress-free and easy as possible. To help, Elite Traveler has created a list of yacht interior (and exterior, in some cases) designers that should be on your radar – and if you’re also on the lookout for a new yacht builder, why not discover our list of the best luxury yacht builders in the world ?

[See more: How to Design an Amazing Superyacht Interior]

Winch Design

Our list of the best yacht interior designers kicks off with  Winch Design. Originally founded by Andrew Winch and his wife Jane in 1986, at the time it was known as Andrew Winch Designs. It was rebranded as Winch Designs in 2015 but has been one of the UK’s leading superyacht and private jet design studios for over thirty years. Winch Design’s yacht studio is now led by Jim Dixon and the team has created a multitude of extraordinary projects, all of which are highly bespoke and tailored to each client’s specific requests.

One of Winch Design’s most recent yacht projects was the 260 ft M/Y Excellence , which shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen say was its “most challenging project to date”. Its owner worked closely with the design studio to create a yacht with interiors inspired by the “Floridian East Cost Deco” style and that felt both personal to him and welcoming to any guest on board. “ Excellence was a very exciting project to be involved with and [she] tested the team to their creative limits,” says senior partner, Ignacio Oliva-Vele.

Terence disdale design.

Based in the UK, Terence Disdale Design is one of the yachting industry’s most respected design studios. The team works on both the interior and exterior design of some of the world’s most incredible yachts, with previous projects including M/Y Eclipse , one of the biggest superyachts in the world. The studio was founded by Terence Disdale, who – despite having no formal training – is one of the most sought-after designers in the industry.

Disdale set up his eponymous studio in 1972 after working for famous designer Jon Bannenberg (Bannenberg’s studio was also where Andrew Winch and Tim Heywood learned their craft). Across his extraordinary 40-year career Disdale and his studio have designed over 100 yachts, including more than 50 superyachts. His wide-ranging design style often follows the mantra of ‘beach house, not penthouse’, with concepts often finding inspiration from the ocean.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Australian yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni’s career began after he studied Industrial Design and found his first position working for shipbuilder Oceanfast. It was thanks to the experience he gained at this renowned shipbuilder that Sorgiovanni decided to set up his own studio, launching Sorgiovanni Designs in 1997 in Fremantle, Western Australia. The studio has also recently opened an office in Monaco in order to expand its design services to Europe.

Sorgiovanni believes it’s important to “keep one eye on the past” when designing projects, “in order to avoid making the same mistakes” as before. Previous yacht designs that he has worked on include the 390 ft Amana in collaboration with Oceanco, and the exteriors of the 270 ft Secret. When Sorgiovanni is not working on a particular project, he is also traveling the world to consult on yacht designs for clients, working with a variety of suppliers and shipbuilders.

Zaniz Studio

Yacht interior designer Zaniz Studio exterior of Luminosity

Next up on our list of the best yacht interior designers is Zaniz Studio. The company was founded in New York City by English-American designer Zaniz Jakubowski – who up until recently, had rarely been able to discuss her astounding portfolio of projects due to the NDAs that came with the commissions. The studio has an international reputation for creating iconic and innovative projects, which always have strong attention to detail. As well as designing for both private and commercial yachts, Zaniz Studio works across other industries, including creating theatre sets and residential and commercial interiors.

One of Zaniz Studio’s latest projects – and one it was able to share – was the 350 ft superyacht Luminosity , which went on the market last year for over $266 million. The studio was responsible for both the interior and exterior of Luminosity, which was built by Italian shipyard Benetti. What is most interesting is that the team abandoned the typical format of designing the exterior first, followed by the interior; instead, the superyacht has been designed from the inside out.

Nuvolari Lenard

Well known for its timeless design style, Nuvolari Lenard is one of the largest – and most active – luxury yacht design studios in the world, founded in 1992 by naval architect and mechanical engineer Carlo Nuvolari and stylist Dan Lenard. The studio is based in Italy’s island city, Venice, and draws heavy influence from the city for its classic yacht designs, combining strong architectural lines with a deep passion and understanding for the sea. One of its latest projects was the 465 ft Nord (previously called Project Opus).

Not only is Nuvolari Lenard based in Venice, but it also has a renowned Design Center on the outskirts of the city that hosts architects and designers working on a range of tasks. Inside the Design Center is a scale yacht model workshop that gives designers the opportunity to visualize their concepts and research shapes before confirming a final design. The interior design section of the studio’s Design Center also features a showroom where clients and designers can discuss fabrics and materials.

Patrick Knowles Designs

superyacht designers uk

With decades of experience in the marine industry under his belt, Patrick Knowles is one of America’s top yacht designers. His studio, Patrick Knowles Designs , specializes in custom megayacht and superyacht interiors, as well as designing for private aircraft. The team at Patrick Knowles Design prides themselves on their creativity and a strong commitment to making sure projects are finished on time, while also exceeding expectations.

One of Patrick Knowles Designs’ award-winning projects was a Key West-inspired 206 ft ISA displacement superyacht. The owners requested an interior that felt like a five-star tropical resort; through a design that incorporated vibrant murals of plants and aquatic life, lush fabrics and furnishings, and the use of environmentally friendly, natural materials including bamboo, palm wood and coconut shells, Patrick Knowles delivered. The onboard showcase piece is a 30-foot-tall light fixture constructed from Murano glass that sits within the spiral staircase, joining all three levels.

Tillberg Design of Sweden

Tillberg Design of Sweden yacht interior designer superyacht Somnio

Our list of the most exclusive yacht interior designers would not be complete without mentioning Tillberg Design of Sweden. Founded in 1964 in Höganäs, the practice has been designing timeless Scandinavian-inspired interiors on board some of the world’s most luxurious vessels for over five decades.

Known for its meticulous craftsmanship, use of quality materials and expert lighting, when it comes to creating beautiful spaces you’re in safe hands with Tillberg Design of Sweden. Perhaps most impressive is the studio’s latest project designing the interiors onboard the gigantic 728-foot superyacht Somnio .

The recently released renderings reveal stunning dream-like rooms expertly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. Future owners that are lucky enough to live on the world’s first residential yacht liner will be given the opportunity to work with the prestigious design firm over three months to create their dream apartment.

What makes the British superyacht industry great?

1. let’s start at the beginning.

The British superyacht industry is, in some sense, a glittering flotilla of individuals and superyacht businesses who are bonded by a common strand of British nautical DNA. At the risk of stating the obvious, the British do like yachting. They have always liked yachting and generally, they’ve been quite good at it. Whether it was King Edward VII’s grand racing exploits on the Cote D’Azur or the superyacht design rock that was dropped in the UK’s design pond in the 1960s by the modern master of superyacht design, Jon Bannenberg , the UK and superyachts have an unbreakable union that persists to this day. No other nation has unfurled its superyacht expertise as often as this island nation has.

Perhaps, there is nothing particularly ground-breaking in that statement, but it does trigger a contemplation on the continuing cultural link of Britain to the business of the sea. So, it is in 2022 as it was in 1754 when novelist Henry Fielding described British sailors as “…perfect masters of their business, always extremely alert and ready in executing it, without any regard to fatigue or hazard,” indeed he could have described any of the then British maritime trades in the same way.

The Restoration of 1660 had the new King Charles II return to England with a passion for the yachts he had seen during his exile in Holland. Charles II had become familiar with the Dutch practice of canal and river boats being luxuriously fitted out for the comfort of the grandees of Dutch society as they travelled by water from town to town. Yachts became a passion for the new king. Although the Dutch gifted him the yacht Mary , Charles wanted better. English diarist Samuel Pepys wrote on 8 November 1660, that Mary “…is one of the finest things that I ever saw for neatness and room in so small a vessel” and on the King’s command a new yacht was commissioned, the designers and builders of which had to surpass Mary and had to do so as a matter of honour and national pride. That yacht became Katherine , the first British designed and built luxury yacht which would eventually make Britain world class luxury yacht builders.

2. Reimaging the future of superyachts

This history has created a narrative from which the British superyacht world draws inspiration, and the rest of the superyacht industry looks to for expertise. All of which gets pulled together by Superyacht UK, the trade association that represents the British superyacht industry. On another level, in the field of superyacht design, the UK often leads.

Jon Bannenberg is described as the father of modern superyacht design. His influence in determining what large superyachts look like is without parallel. Bannenberg, and those who once trained with Jon Bannenberg, have dominated the large superyacht design world for many years. Leading design house RWD had a close connection with that Bannenberg ecosystem with Mark Whitely having worked with Bannenberg alumnus Andrew Winch. RWD is regularly designing one-off bemouths to be built at Lürssen, Feadship or Amels.

The UK is still an unrivalled centre for superyacht design, whether it is interior or exterior styling or indeed yachting naval architecture. For example, the Solent University degree programmes in yacht and power craft design have their former students working at superyacht naval architectural offices and superyacht builders across the world. Some return to tank test their more challenging designs before those superyachts are built in the Netherlands, Italy or Germany.

3. We still build superyachts…. And the clever stuff that makes them!

It is true that the UK may no longer be building the volume of superyachts built elsewhere, but what the UK does design, and build is wanted because of its innovation and the quality of its crafts. The 19th century yacht building excellence that existed on the river Clyde has been inherited by Sunseeker International, Oyster Yachts , Princess Yachts and at Pendennis .

The newly launched Sunseeker 100 is a strikingly luxurious diminutive cruiser whilst the Princess X Class range has torn up the rule book on pocket superyachts. The X Class is a brilliant British superyacht collaboration between Princess Yachts and designers Olesinki who teamed up with Italian styling powerhouse Pininfarina . As of January 2022, Princess Yachts had 30 orders for their X80 . Innovation in design yes, but always underpinned by a tradition of doing things right.

The new is always energising, but one could not fail to stand in awe of the restoration of the classic 1929 built clipper bowed gentleman’s cruising yacht, the 71 metre Haida 1929 . The restoration was conceived by British designer Adam Lay and beautifully executed by Pendennis. Rebuilt with tenderness and respect. But the UK also has a thriving network that exports marine equipment and provides some of the most spectacular tenders.

4. We know our stuff

The ancestry of a company like Falcon Tenders is an important element of their success. A modern heritage brand if you will. The legendary yacht design and naval architecture of William Fife , GL Watson , or Laurent Giles set the standard in the Golden Age of luxury yachting. Laurent Giles are still part of a cohort of British superyacht subject matter experts that are in demand all over the world, because they are good at what they do. They were responsible for the naval architecture on the new Wally 27m why200 hybrid superyacht , and they are currently working on a 110m hybrid yacht known as Project Atlas. This technical subject matter expertise is widely sought after. The names change but the expertise stays the same. BMT Nigel Gee was a mainstay of the superyacht scene.

They are now Lateral but their know-how and know-why is undiminished and unchanged with current projects stretching from the Netherlands to Turkey. Lateral’s story is not unusual. British-based naval architects, engineers and surveyors are often called upon to do the technical grubby stuff necessary to make a superyacht build or refit successful. If you find yourself at a superyacht builder and ask to speak to the owner’s rep, often that person will be employed by one of the British houses. A Royale Oceanic or Winterbothams surveyor or technical expert is a familiar sight at many a European superyacht builder.

5.  The small print

And when you’re not bumping into a Superyacht UK member surveying or approving the engineering of a superyacht, you will almost certainly find the lawyer or the insurer or the guys who set up the ownership structures sat somewhere in the UK. The way the superyacht world does business has for more than 20 years been built on the legal and tax expertise of some of the best corporate and superyacht lawyers in the world.  HfW, Hill Dickinson, Lester Aldridge amongst others, have framed, legally, how superyachts are built, bought, and sold for many years. It’s true that English law is not everyone’s favourite cup of tea, however even those contracts that are governed by Dutch, German or Italian law have often taken as their text the contracts drafted in the UK where we have a tradition of yacht-specific law that goes back more than a hundred years.

The same goes for insurance and the UK. British superyacht insurance is built upon an insurance tradition that goes back 350 years. The grandfather of modern superyacht insurance broking Nick Sturge, the venerable but now retired and ever charming former paterfamilias of what is now Howden Sturge, had an approach to insurance which is founded on a deep understanding not only of yachting but also needs of the yacht owner that came from the principle that expertise is knowledge plus customer service.

The UK has been very much part of the growth and development of the global superyacht industry of the last twenty years. The British superyacht industry independently or through its trade association Superyacht UK, has often gone about its work quietly but expertly. No Union Jacks have been planted but, the superyacht industry in the UK has time and again demonstrated expertise and the willingness to collaborate with colleagues around the world, a quality that Superyacht UK has wonderfully sponsored. The world often comes to the UK, in part, because the depth of our experience but, they also do so because we are nation of sailors and people who love yachts.

Superyacht.com's Top Interiors of 2021

By Danny Wiser

As the old adage goes 'it doesn't matter what you look like on the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts. Whilst at Superyachts.com we of course value exterior design, 2021 has seen a series of new creations kiss the waters packed out with magnificent interiors. Here are some of our favourites...

Cloud 9 The Italian city of Milan has long been with synonymous with good taste. Host to labels such as Versace, Armani and Dolce & Gabbana, the city is packed out with beautifully dressed individuals who spend their days roaming around the intricate architecture of the Piazza del Duomo and admiring the beauty of the displays in the high-end stores that make up the stunning Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. It therefore comes as no surprise that Milan was the birthplace and childhood inspiration of Francesco Paszkowski who designed the interiors for this 61.5m enchantress. Her matt grey colour scheme makes for a deeply relaxing and classy feel that is brought to life by the light of the outdoor living areas.

Moskito Dubbed the 'father of modern yacht design', Jon Bannenberg's involvement on any project is always likely to elicit excitement from yacht enthusiasts. Bannenberg & Rowell Design's involvement on this project of course did not fail to deliver as her contemporary interior creates a wonderful ambience. Her white Thassos marble flooring in the owner’s suite bathroom is a particular highlight, making the Dutch vessel a perfect getaway yacht for interior connoisseurs.

Triumph Just like Cloud 9, Triumph is another Italian creation, this time out of Benetti's shipyard who were also responsible for her magnificent interior. Owned by Sarah and Chris Dawson, executive chairman of the British retail chain The Range, Triumph includes not only includes a wild range of features for those who want to unwind and relax but so too a style that sets her apart from the rest thanks to some additional help from Green & Mingarelli Design. Plant life can be found across in most rooms bringing a sense of connection back to the land even when cruising across the high seas.

Victorious British based design studio, H2 Yacht Design designed the interior of Victorious who features accommodation for 24 guests in 12 cabins, including a private deck for the owner’s personal usage. Packed with amenities for family cruising, her interior is mindful of a child friendly design. This however, did not get in the way of luxury and risks were taking including the installation of glorious walnut flooring balancing together both functionality and aestethic. This delicate balance between style and function was perfected by the studio and after a 14 year long wait for her delivery, most would look at her and agree that the patience was worthwhile.

"TRIUMPH [is] unquestionably the most ground breaking Benetti yacht on the water today." Manuele Thiella, CEO Royal Yacht International

"TRIUMPH [is] unquestionably the most ground breaking Benetti yacht on the water today."

Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition officially underway

British Marine Marcomms News , Young Designer 2024

University Staff and students enjoy visit to Sunseeker International to learn more about the competition and tour the Sunseeker Shipyard and Technology centre

The 2024 Superyacht UK Young Designer competition officially got underway last week (Thursday 14 March) when Superyacht UK, British Marine and Sunseeker International hosted a launch event at Sunseeker’s client Showcase in Poole.

The event saw university Design Department Heads and staff from Staffordshire University, University of Plymouth, Southampton Solent University and Bournemouth University, as well as a representative from Pantaenius UK, alongside a number of MSc students from Southampton Solent University come together to learn more about the competition, as well as being given the opportunity to explore Sunseeker’s main shipyard and state-of-the-art Design & Technology Centre.

The day got underway with a networking breakfast before Superyacht UK Chair, Ben Geary welcomed the visitors, before Giles Barkley, Course Leader – Yacht Design Portfolio at Southampton Solent University outlined the details of the upcoming competition.  It was then time to learn more about Sunseeker, one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of luxury performance motor yachts, as Ewen Foster, Chief Technical Officer and Adam Wheeler, Head of Design Operations & Engineering Management talked about conceptualisation, design, engineering, and interiors with the guests.

Following a networking lunch it was time to visit Sunseeker’s main shipyard where the guests were taken through the whole manufacturing process and saw how the boats are hand-crafted before taking a tour of some finished yachts.

From the Shipyard the group moved to the Design & Technology Centre, here the guests spent time looking at how the interior aspects of the yachts come together from furniture and fittings, electrical systems, and upholstery.

Speaking of the event, Giles commented: “The Superyacht UK launch event was extremely enjoyable for both my colleague Vittorio and myself, and also my Master’s student attendees.  We were all really impressed with Sunseeker’s tour of the yard and technical offices. It really shows them how boats are designed and built and as usual, I am amazed by the range of skills and trades that the company deliver themselves, to make ‘Sunseeker’ a truly internationally recognised brand! “It is always a pleasure to see some of our graduates, both recent and older, really applying and enjoying themselves in the industry that they chose to learn about with us all those years ago. I will continue to prepare and encourage our current students so they can very soon actively contribute to the marine industry.” Simon Hedley, Head of Commercial Partnerships at Marine Insurance Specialist, Pantaenius UK, added: “I was very pleased to see how Superyacht UK and Sunseeker are looking to the future to nurture new talent into the superyacht design sector with the launch of this competition. The tour of the Sunseeker Shipyard and Tech Centre reinforced my personal belief that we have exceptional talent in the marine sector here in the UK and we need to safeguard this by investing in the future generation of skilled professionals. It was a real privilege to witness the whole process from concept and design to all aspects of the manufacturing process, most of which is being carried out by in-house skilled staff. I’ll certainly look at a Sunseeker in future with a better understanding of the expertise and dedication it takes to build one! I wish all the students the best of luck with the competition and with their future careers in our precious industry.”

The Superyacht UK Youth Designer competition will take place at the Southampton International Boat Show from 16-18 September 2024, offering a unique platform for young designers from universities across the country to showcase their creativity and innovation in yacht design and present their designs to an international audience and industry experts.

This year’s competition introduces two categories for entry: category 1 for 2 nd and 3 rd year students, and category 2 for Master’s students. A total of 12 places are available, with participants required to hand draw their designs to specific briefs during the two-day event at the Southampton International Boat Show in September.

Winners and runners-up in each category can look forward to great prizes, further details will be announced soon. Entries require nomination by a tutor/lecturer and the completed entry form must be submitted to Superyacht UK by 30 April 2024 .

To register an entrant please use this form: https://forms.office.com/e/W4unaKAi8g

Once all entries have been considered, Superyacht UK will notify the successful candidates.

“The competition is becoming an ever more important event to engage with future design talent. We are proud to play a part in supporting this initiative which champions Naval Architecture, Transport and Product Design as a valuable career path. We are keen to encourage these talented individuals who will in future add immense value to businesses like ours given their inspiration, skill, and adoption of cutting-edge technology”, commented Ewen Foster, Chief Technical Officer, Sunseeker International. In closing, Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine added: “It was a privilege to see so many passionate students and educators from across the UK come together at last week’s launch event, eager to learn and explore the intricacies of luxury yacht design and manufacturing. The competition is not just a contest; it’s a celebration of talent, a bridge connecting academia with industry, and a testament to our commitment to fostering creativity and excellence in yacht design. I am thrilled to see what innovative designs this year’s participants will bring to the forefront and am confident that this event will continue to be a cornerstone for discovering and supporting the future luminaries of yacht design.”

World’s first ‘Transformer’ superyacht 300ft X-Kid UNFOLDS when at anchor & turns into a floating villa

  • Neha Dhillon

  • Updated : 1:16, 24 Mar 2024

THE world's first "transformer" superyacht has been unveiled that unfolds into a floating villa when docked.

Monaco -based designer Stefano Pastrovich has finally revealed his aptly dubbed creation X-Kid Stuff, a mega superyacht designed for modern-day explorers and adventurers.

Pastrovich Studio has unveiled their concept of a superyacht that unfolds when anchored

When closed, the yacht appears sleek, modern, and seamless.

Yet, when anchored you can open her up to reveal an impressive 15m of storage - purpose built for adventuring toys, jet skis , a helipad, a swimming pool, an artificial beach or even just additional sleeping space.

These detachable and self-powered units have been dubbed "floating bungalows, with the potential to become a guest-house of sorts.

This is the first concept in Pastrovich's " Parkour yacht" class, which is said to have taken inspiration from its surroundings and been as efficient as possible.

The X-Kid Stuff, for example, is built in the image of a beehive.

Instead of the beams boats traditionally use, the structure of Pastrovich's revolutionary masterpiece resembles a series of hexagons.

These hexagons provide the yacht with a more fluid structure, as they can easily be moved around to recreate a new internal layout.

A spokesperson for Pastrovich Studios said: "We are looking to the future with our new categories and to a new frontier in yacht design: a single deck layout.

"Strongly influenced by land- based architecture, we have created a living space on board that transforms into a large loft-like space. The internal walls are modular and slide on rails, providing the owner and guests with the freedom to alter the internal layout as they see fit."

Pastrovich maintains that these yachts are envisioned with adaptation, the environment, and efficiency in mind.

The spokesman for the Studio continued: "At the heart of this design was the aim to create a vessel with low energy consumption, that offers the ability to explore anywhere in the world, keeps to a single deck layout, and incorporates a superior beach club."

They added that the vessels are designed to stay completely still in choppy waters, thanks to state-of-the-art stabilising technology.

Pastrovich Studio has combined the systems of self-stabilising hexapods and six hydraulic cylinders - typically found on offshore oil rigs - to keep the boat as still as possible.

The company has even added a gyroscope-based system throughout the vessel which is thought to further reduce the effect of choppy waters.

The spokesman added that every aspect of the vessel has been conceptualised with adventure in mind.

They said: "X-Kid Stuff is a true exploration vessel, designed to be capable of sailing anywhere in the world, in either hot or cold climates, capable of operating in the most adverse weather conditions.

"The vessel hosts all the equipment that a true adventure seeker would expect in its super-hangar such as RIBs, helicopters, kayaks, deep sea diving equipment and so on."

The news comes just after Mark Zuckerberg's $300 million mega yacht arrived in the US .
