Sun Concept Launches Innovative New CAT 12.0 Solar Cruiser

' src=

Sun Concept, an innovative Portuguese builder, just launched its new CAT 12.0 solar-electric catamaran, and it has virtually unlimited range at 5 or 6 knots. At an 8-knot cruising speed, the CAT 12.0 can run a full day and end up with batteries at 40 percent capacity. It has a top speed of 14.5 knots, all operating under silent, sustainable solar and electric power.

What’s particularly unusual about this new 39-foot cat is that it’s designed to be as adaptable as possible. It comes in a Lounge model, with open decks that can hold up to 42 people, and a Cruising model, with two staterooms and a salon for a charter operation or a private owner. So far Sun Concept has sold one Lounge model for use in a marine tourism business and one Cruising model to a private owner.

The solar panels on the coachroof can store 5.8kW, generating more energy than the boat uses at 5 or 6 knots, providing its infinite range. Owners have a choice of two 30kW Torqeedo electric motors or two 50kW Torqeedo electric motors.

The new cat has a beam of 19’ 5”, which provides for a large sunbathing area on the foredeck, and an even larger aft deck, protected by the overhang from the hardtop. The decks are modular, and they can be arranged in an open mode for sightseeing, events and parties, or in a more traditional cruising setup.

The slender, lightweight hull is designed for minimal resistance; it weighs only 14,778 pounds. As a solar-electric vessel, the CAT 12.0 is silent, leaving no exhaust fumes or carbon footprint behind.

Sun Concept was started in 2015 by investors who wanted to create a leadership position in the solar-electric charter, tourism and recreational boating markets. The CAT 12.0 is their largest boat so far.

Specs.: LOA: 39’0”; Beam: 19’5”; Draft: 2’0”; Disp.: 14,778 lbs.; Water: 39 gals.; Power: 2x30kW or 2/50kW Torqeedo electric motors.

Recharge at Sea: Solar Catamarans Harness Sun-Powered Serenity

on

Just as a residential solar system makes a house independent of an electricity grid, a marine solar panel makes a yacht independent of a fossil fuel powered generator. Catamarans boosted by solar power systems are increasingly in demand in today’s day and age for their increased energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Here is everything you should know about solar catamarans from Sunreef Yachts Eco :

An Introduction to Solar Catamarans

Derived from natural sources, renewable energy is replenished at a far higher rate than consumed. Of these, solar energy is the most abundant renewable energy resource on Earth that may even be harnessed during cloudy weathers. Additionally, because sunlight remains omnipresent, powering a watercraft with solar energy is a fitting concept.

Before we continue exploring the subject of solar catamarans, let us focus on the architecture. The twin hull structure of catamarans translates into a large beam, which provides ample space for solar panels installation. To top it off, catamarans have a fairly shallow draft that produces little to no drag, making them exceptionally energy efficient .

Marine solar panels are currently gaining substantial popularity amongst catamaran designers and manufacturers as a medium of supplying clean energy via a reliable source. Sunreef Yachts Eco is a pioneer in solar catamarans as we believe that the incorporation of a solar power system into yachts births an environmentally friendly yachting solution with a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

The Benefits of Solar Catamarans

The ocean is home to the largest continuous ecosystems; unfortunately, it also remains the most sensitive. Millions of people across the globe indulge in recreational marina and boating activities leaving behind pollution in their wake.

Here are three ways in which solar catamarans rectify commonly occurring hazards for the greater good of the environment:

1. Fuel (oil or gasoline) spills and the discharge of combusted fuels from engines readily contaminates water surrounding the marinas. This aggravates toxicity levels in water, resulting in increased pollutant concentrations in aquatic organisms and sediments.

For illustration, coral reefs, which are a vital source of nitrogen and nutrients for marine food chains and provide shelter for over one million aquatic species, are nearing extinction due to water pollution. Installing solar panels would, without a doubt, decrease the dependency of all types of watercrafts on non-renewable energy sources, i.e., fossil fuels, for operations and increase energy efficiency.

2. Noise from moving gas-powered ships cuts straight to the sea floor and back. These acoustic vibrations transmitting end-to-end affect marine animals to a great extent. Research suggests that human-caused noises result in disrupted behaviours, increased stress, and impaired feeding in marine life, leading to injury and death. Solar catamarans are far quieter than their combustion-driven counterparts; thus, they maintain the oceanic silence vital for the marine life as it enables communication and continuous growth.

3. The elimination of fuels also makes solar yachts more affordable to run and maintain in the long haul. In comparison to fuel powered generators, solar catamarans produce electricity at a lower cost since solar panels obtain power via the sunlight, a renewable source of energy that is present in abundance. But even if your catamaran utilizes both fuel and solar power, you are still to enjoy significant savings on fuel.

Why Power A Boat with Solar Panels

Apart from the obvious environmental factors, solar panels fulfil an important criterion for the oceangoing voyagers who do not wish to be left stranded far from land with a dead battery: unlimited backup power.

On a typical sailing day, there is ample sunlight to ensure the backup battery restores enough power to generate electricity that keeps motors, electrical systems, and onboard appliances running. An added benefit of solar panels is that they continue to generate power even when the catamaran is at a standstill. This energy is stored in batteries for later use.

Furthermore, unlike gas powered generators, solar catamarans do not produce excessive heat, are quieter, and experience little to no vibrations. This allows boat trips to remain pleasant for sailors and vacationers.

Sunreef Yachts combines luxury with sustainability to offer noiseless, vibration-free, and fume-free cruising experiences. Launched under the Sunreef Yachts Eco flag, our sailing and motor yachts are powered using inhouse engineered solar panels that are fully integrated within their composite structure for optimal results. However, an additional asset for sailing solar catamarans remains the ability to combine eco motoring with wind propulsion with the use of high-performance kites.

The Mechanism of the Solar Power System

Classification of solar panels   .

There are various kinds of solar panels available for marine boats: adjustable panels, standard panels, and high-energy thin-film panels. While some may argue that having a portable solar panel makes it easier to relocate to where the sun shines the brightest, permanently mounted panels remain ready to go throughout the day.

Despite their long life, standard panels often fail to find a place in the marine industry as they compromise the space availability onboard. Hence, high-energy thin-film panels emerge as winners due to their ability of being permanently embedded on the solar catamaran’s bodywork without restricting living space.

The research and development team at Sunreef Yachts Eco developed the industry’s first composite integrated photovoltaic technology to produce highly efficient, shock resistant, flexible, and ultra-thin solar panels. This in-house engineered solar power system was recognized as a winner of the German Design Award 2022 in the category of Excellent Product Design: Eco Design .

Each solar panel consists of photovoltaic cells, compromising of a positive and negative layer for creating an electrical field. These are made of singly-crystal silicon, a semiconductor that absorbs the radiations of the sun to produce electrical power via the photovoltaic effect. For better understanding: the photovoltaic effect is the process of converting photons (a particle of light) to voltage.

Technical Specifications of Solar Panels

While the average solar panels’ weight lies between 8 to 15 kilograms per square meter, Sunreef Yachts Eco’s solar cells have a thickness below one millimetre and weigh only 1.8 kilograms per square meter. This makes Sunreef Yachts Eco the lightest marine solar power system producer in the solar catamaran market.

Each of the solar cells administered into the Sunreef solar catamarans are ISO 9001:2015 certified and offer a peak performance of ±24 percent, this is 25 to 30 percent more power compared to conventional cells. Despite this, these solar cells do not heat up excessively when receiving sunlight.

Integration Into the Solar Catamarans Structure

The orientation of the sun should be as such as that it hits the solar panels at a 90° angle for best performance. However, with the Earth rotating around its axis to produce a 24-hour day, it is non-viable to ensure the perfect angle throughout the day.

What is more is that the amount of energy produced may also differ depending on external factors, such as a building preventing direct sunlight from hitting the solar panels or light experiencing diffraction from the waterbody before contact. For this reason, it is best to invest in high-efficiency solar cells that generate maximum energy even from limited number of active panels.

Sunreef Yachts Eco makes the most of its solar catamarans’ space availability by spreading its “solar skin” across the hulls, mast, superstructure, bow terrace and bimini roof. Due to this arrangement, the solar panels receive ample sunlight at desired angles from early morning to late afternoon.

At the same time, light rays bouncing off the surface of water to the solar panels, in a process called reflection, also helps generate electricity. These superior performance solar panels possess great strength and durability to survive adverse conditions, year after year.

Generation of Electricity on Solar Catamarans

The crystals in marine solar cells are treated to enable the movement of electrons to generate an electric current. These silicon electrons activate only when in direct contact with sunrays. Instantaneously they start producing direct current (or DC) charges, which is captured by wires and stored in the batteries as energy.

At this point, a charge controller is employed as a regulator for the energy to transfer from the solar panels to the battery. It not only manages the energy load received by the battery, but also prolongs the battery life and performance by ensuring the battery is not overcharged or overloaded. Solar catamarans deploy multiple charge controllers depending on the energy produced.

While the current may be supplied directly to support the electrical demands of the catamaran, if the appliances demand alternating current (or AC), an inverter is added to the cycle to convert the DC to AC first.

Solar Catamarans in Action

But how much energy is enough energy? Working out a catamarans’ energy requirements requires summing up the energy consumed by each device onboard in watt-hours. For better understanding: energy is power accumulated over time, so if power is calculated in watts, energy is watt-hours.

Hence, the first step of installing solar panels dictates an extensive energy assessment of the watercraft. This requires checking the labels of every individual appliance onboard for its typical amp hours and volts used, be it the fridge, fan, or lightbulb. A battery monitor can also help measure energy consumed more accurately.

Depending on the size of the catamaran and the energy consumed, the solar panels size and wattage of power can be precisely determined. Multiple solar panels may be wired together to form a solar array for maximum energy generation. Aiming to fulfil the power needs of your catamaran with solar panels allows you to enjoy a quiet, peaceful anchorage.

Overcoming The Challenges of Solar Catamarans

While yacht solar panels resolve the problem for keeping the batteries topped up without running the generator, solar power systems are faced with challenges of their own. For starters, the harsh weather incurred at sea and saltwater splashing on or immersing the panels accounts for much damage.

However, technological advancements have enabled solar panels to withstand most of these environmental adversities. To illustrate, the installation and electronics linked with solar power systems have now become more resistant to short circuits and corrosion.

Sunreef Yachts Eco employs a unique photovoltaic integration technique in solar catamarans to give the panels extreme resistance to shock and abrasion. Even if the cell eventually cracks, the solid metal foundation remains intact to maintain a high-power output. Furthermore, these solar panels experience no light-induced degradation, no temperature coefficient, and favourable low-light and broad spectral response.

Likewise, the constrains of surface area for marine solar PVs have been addressed with the ability to manufacture customized solar panels. For instance, Sunreef Yachts Eco uses the lightest solar cells in the industry which offer unparalleled flexibility for placement on rounded surfaces of the solar catamaran while others break under pressure. Here solar panels are integrated vertically (on hull sides, flybridge sides, and mast) and horizontally (on front flybridge and bimini) to maximize energy generation.

While the Sunreef Yachts Eco’s solar panel system has a protracted life expectancy, any panels sustaining damage, due to adverse conditions at sea or other geographical circumstances, can easily be replaced. However, it is proven repeatedly that their performance remains unaltered over extended periods of time.

Efficiency of Solar Catamarans Vs. Diesel Yachts

Solar panels make for an ideal energy provider as they ensure the batteries always have power. This makes solar catamarans more self-sustainable and cost efficient to run in comparison to gas-powered ones. Additionally, fewer moving parts in solar catamarans call for significantly lesser maintenance in comparison to diesel yachts.

Boats of all shapes, sizes, and types (sail or motor) can be powered via solar energy to run all onboard appliances on battery. Apart from fulfilling the watercrafts’ day to day electrical usage, utilizing a renewable source of energy extends the durability and reliability of the catamaran.

But most importantly, a solar powered yacht compared to a standard diesel yacht has a significantly reduced carbon footprint. Ideally, with the use of solar power generation on catamarans, you would save 108.5kg of CO2 emissions per day or 39.6 metric tonnes annually.

Why Invest in A Solar Catamaran?

The wind in your hair, the sun on your face, and the sweet smell of the sea are one of the many joys of sailing. However, as an ocean enthusiast, it is crucial to calculate your impact on the environment. On average, the Sunreef Yachts Eco’s solar catamarans account for substantial electricity generation of up to 30 kWh, promoting a positive green footprint.

Today, solar catamarans are trending among yacht owners and shipbuilders as a clean medium to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, staying true to its legacy of yacht innovation and evolution, Sunreef Yachts Eco continues to work on advancements to its solar panels for improved performance, efficiency, and durability.

Evaluating the Sunreef Yachts Eco Solar Catamarans

Using advanced technology, Sunreef Yachts Eco has engineered ultra-thin, flexible solar panels with the best performance on the market. They are seven times lighter than the average solar power system, enabling them to be fully integrated into the composite structures, including curved surfaces.

The more surface area covered, the more electricity generated. The 80 Sunreef Power incorporates 200 square meters of solar panels (weighing about 360 kilograms) that deliver an astounding 40 kilowatts peak per hour. This setup alone produces solar energy equalling to two generators weighing 800 kilograms altogether.

Hence proven that Sunreef Yachts Eco optimized marine solar panel system outperforms a diesel generator both by weight and performance. Additionally, at reduced speeds, the Sunreef 80 Eco remains fully autonomous, running solely on solar power.

In light of sustainable yachting, Sunreef Yachts Eco has committed to launch over 40 models of its solar catamarans by the end of 2024; this includes a wide selection of sailing yachts, power yachts, and superyachts. Furthermore, Sunreef Yachts has begun commissioning a new range of technologically advanced hybrid ecospeeders, called the Sunreef ULTIMA , that would further extend their solar catamarans line up.

Future Innovations in Solar Catamarans

Despite the distinctive competency of Sunreef Yachts Eco in solar catamarans, the journey of innovation does not come to a halt. To further reduce our carbon footprint, we are undergoing ground-breaking research to redirect excess heat secured from direct sunlight on solar panels to the boilers of our solar catamarans.

Furthermore, Sunreef Yachts Eco is currently developing a concept of an all-new 90 feet sustainable sailing superyacht , called ‘The Zero Cat’ . Apart from sporting a solar power system, this catamaran will use a zero-emission generator to convert methanol to clean hydrogen for unlimited autonomy and greater self-sufficiency.

Blog | 10 of the Most Amazing Future Yacht Concepts

In the major yachting magazines and at the various international boat shows, there is never a shortage of sometimes very bizarre looking concept motor yachts. These high-tech marvels of marine engineering and stunning design, rarely, if ever, get built, but they give us maybe a little glimpse into the future of luxury motor yachts. Here are 10 of the most amazing future yacht concepts as compiled by Boat International.

Solar Dream – With a name like “ Solar Dream ,” obviously, solar power is a key theme in Dennis Ingemansson’s 140 foot concept yacht. Designed for Turkish yard Nedship, this futuristic catamaran features over 1000 square feet of solar paneling for some serious eco-friendly credentials.

Project Ego – Project Ego is a 118 foot superyacht concept, the brainchild of Italian designer Mauro Giamboi. Project Ego makes good use of an enormous 42 foot beam with a layout that includes a vast saloon and two guest cabins on the main-deck. But the star of the show is the transformable transom, which allows guests to relax in close proximity with the sea.

Trilobis 65 – Trilobis 65 is a circular 65 foot “green” yacht from Giancarlo Zema Design Group, powered by solar energy and hydrogen fuel cells. This futuristic vessel has an underwater observation deck with 360 degree views for six passengers and it was named after little Trilobite creatures that lived in the sea 500 million years ago. The underwater globe has computers that provide the guests with real-time information on the marine life they are looking at.

Dare To Dream – Of all the yachts in this list, Dare To Dream may be the most bizarre and ambitious. Looking like something from a cross between a Jules Verne novel, and a James Bond Film, Dare to Dream is designed to be an “airship carrier.” Designed by Monaco-based artist George Lucian, Dare To Dream targets visionary superyacht owners who are equally passionate about flying as they are about yachting.

Seataci – The Seataci aims to mimic the movement of a whale, a “cetacean”, hence its name. Created by Montreal-based designer, Charles Bombardier, Seataci’s two submerged pods would create waves to drive the yacht forward, while the trailing aft section adds to the stability of the design.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0rYgNdjwlQ

L’Amage – Measuring an astounding 623 feet, L’Amage is easily the largest superyacht concept on this list, dwarfing even the 180 foot, Azzam , which is currently the world’s largest superyacht. Designed by HBD Studios, this mammoth yacht would feature accommodation for 30 guests split across 15 cabins, while the crew quarters would house a staff of 70.

Bolla – Bolla is a 214 foot concept superyacht that won bronze in the yacht and marine vessels category at the 2015 A’Design Awards. The designers’ aim to connect the air and the water inspired both the striking spherical bubble in the center of the symmetrical superstructure and the yacht’s name, which means ‘bubble’ in Italian.

Follow The Sun – Of all of the yachts on this list, Follow The Sun may be the closest to actually being built. That is because it is based on a proven catamaran platform from Turkish yard Nedship Group. Designed by Dennis Ingemansson, Follow The Sun is a 164 foot concept yacht that would come with its own helipad, foredeck swimming pool and more than 500 square feet of solar panels, hence her “brilliant” name.

Black Swan – Embrace your inner Bond villain or Dark Lord of the Sith, with this sinister-looking concept yacht, which shuns convention and embraces dark tones through its minimalist interior. At 230 intimidating feet, Black Swan is designed around its helipad, from which guests can descend into the interior via a concealed lift. Plenty of al fresco relaxation space is provided by the extended aft deck, complete with 12 sun-loungers and an infinity pool, while two forward balconies provide unobstructed views out to sea.

Tropical Island Paradise – Why travel to a tropical island, when you can travel on one! That is the concept behind Tropical Island Paradise . The huge exterior main deck includes many of the features of a tropical island for which it is named, including a huge swimming pool, cabanas and a bar. But the standout feature is the volcano, with a waterfall that runs down into the swimming pool. The two-deck owner’s suite is cut into the side of the volcano, with views out across the bow from behind the waterfall.

The Six Concept Designs that are Rocking the Superyacht World Right Now

Written By: Rachel Ingram

From Star Trek-inspired hulls to onboard hydroponic farms, these six out-of-the-box superyachts are pushing the boundaries of creativity when it comes to design and innovation.

Pegasus 1200x800

Concepting is an essential part of the yacht building process as designers work out how to bring their client’s dream to life – or simply put their own wild ideas to paper. Very few finished concepts come to fruition, but they still serve a vital purpose – to inspire owners to think outside the box and encourage designers and shipyards to test the limits of possibility.

While some projects are more realistic than others, each presents ideas that can lead to change and growth, which is essential as the industry continues to evolve. With so many creative concepts floating around, we highlight the most innovative designs making waves and how they could inspire the future of yachting.

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design has released a series of impressive designs in recent years, but none are more transfixing than Poetry, a 130-metre concept yacht that the studio calls its “tribute to yachting”. The design, founded on the philosophy of living close to the water, creates a seamless harmony between the guests and the aquatic environment – on the aft, for instance, a sprawling aft beach club extends to touch the waves.

The project epitomises indoor-outdoor living. The superstructure has been fully opened to create unobstructed decks with panoramic vistas. This is best seen in the owner’s suite which spills onto a private deck. Throughout the interior, a connection to nature is maintained through water features and living vegetation, plus the installation of giant windows that flood each space with natural light – and views.

Poetry 1200x800

Named after the Greek God of the wind, Aeolus is as bold and impactful as her namesake. Designed to look as though she’s been “sculpted by the wind”, the 131-metre Oceanco concept yacht stands out with her sleek lines and dynamic curves that extend through the exterior and interior.

But more than being impressive to look at, Aeolus is technologically forward thinking. She’s equipped with innovative NXT technology, which was developed by the shipyard as part of its ambitions to develop a net-zero yachting industry. She’s also decorated mostly in bio-materials to further promote sustainability. And when it comes to layout, designers have taken a modern approach which re-thinks how guests live and work onboard. Aeolus is inspiring on all levels.

Feadship describes its 85-metre superyacht concept Slice as a project to usher in a “new era of interiors”. Designers at Studio De Voogt took her name literally, engineering a glass strip that runs through the yacht from bow to stern, flooding all decks with natural light. The revolutionary solution tackles the long-standing issue of lighting in the centre of superyachts, which are often dark and lit artificially. Slice “turns the inside out and the outside in,” says lead designer Chris Bottoms.

The concept was designed with modern families in mind and reimagines the way guests live on a yacht, with multi-level living spaces to keep guests connected, indoor-outdoor layouts and dual-function areas which can be adapted to suit all manner of activities. Highlight features include the 70 square metre atrium with cascading balconies at the heart of the yacht and the 10-metre-long data science-engineered pool, which features anti-slosh technology for swimming on the move.

Project Enterprise

As a company that specialises in conceptual design, M51 Concepts has not shied away from pushing boundaries with its disruptive yachts. The studio’s latest work, Project Enterprise , is a trimaran with a wide beam design to maximise storage for toys and tenders – set off directly from a direct-to-water platform within the yacht’s lower deck – and curved decks offering panoramic views from the interior.

The pools on this yacht are particularly interesting. While most designers place a pool on sun or aft deck, this 84-metre yachts places it inside a partially enclosed courtyard topped with an open sky light – sun enters during the day and the stars shine overhead at night. A secondary pool can be found on the yacht’s pointed bow which dramatically pierces the water.

Inspiration for the project was subconscious, reveals designer Anthony Glasson: “The exterior styling inspiration was only realized once finished as I had been watching the first season of Star Trek and unconsciously designed a yacht that resembles the original Star Trek Enterprise.”

Pegasus is a project of firsts. Designed by Jozeph Forakis, the design conceptualises the world’s first 3D-printed superyacht. But that isn’t its only USP. The 88-metre vessel features a distinctive mirrored exterior (another first) to make the yacht blend in with its surroundings. The designer was inspired to create a yacht that could be “virtually invisible”, both in design and in environmental impact. “I was inspired to create a yacht as close to the sea and nature as possible, made of clouds floating above the waterline. I wanted to honour nature by blending into it, becoming virtually invisible,” he says.

Inside, it gets even more interesting. The interior centres around a multi-level hydroponic garden that the designer calls a ‘tree of life’. Plants grown in the farm – including vegetables, herbs and flowers – provides fresh food for the galley. The plants also purify the air. “Pegasus is a bold but achievable vision for the near future of the superyacht industry, where man and machine live in harmony with nature rather than competing or compromising it, ” Forakis adds .

Lazzarini Design Studio is behind some of the industry’s quirkiest designs, from Avanguardia, a swan-shaped megayacht with detachable ‘head’, to The Shape, which bears a gaping hole in the middle of its superstructure. The firm’s newest concept Plectrum takes the concept of a hydrofoil to a new level. The 74-metre yacht features giant wings that enable her to ‘fly’ across the water at staggering speeds of up to 75 knots, thanks to her three hydrogen motors. The sleek yacht also stands out with her bold orange exterior and fun features including a generous beach club, aft pool, and retractable helipad hidden the bow.

For over 20 years, we have launched 14 superyacht lines and over 147 yachts over 100 feet sold worldwide. The 120 Yacht is a stunning new concept that, to the right owner, will fulfil their yachting dreams.”

The Sunseeker 120 Yacht will captivate with its elegant low-profile. Sunseeker's signature styling shines through, setting it apart from the competition with impressive glazing, raised stainless steel handrails and a sleek hardtop and raised pilot house.

Forward of the raised pilot house lies an elevated foredeck. An optional spa tub beneath the windshield complements a huge seating group comprising asymmetrical sofas and a four-person sun pad. The flybridge aft comprises two large seating arrangements for formal dining and socialising with space further aft for freestanding furniture. The aft flybridge and foredeck are linked via a starboard side walk-through in the coaming, promoting free movement between social zones.

Far from the traditional, the aft cockpit features a curved seating group for ten guests with dual symmetrical tables centralised around a four-person wet bar. Altogether, the exterior zones, seating arrangements and features provide an outdoor sanctuary.

At water level, a full-width rise and fall bathing platform features a gull-wing door that opens up to a day-head, shower and storage space. An integrated tender garage comfortably houses a 6-metre tender and two jet skis for unprecedented waterside enjoyment.

The 120 Yacht offers interior features designed to elevate the on-board experience. A sophisticated and rich interior with mid-century modern influences. The elective materials assist in maximising the natural light on board. The 120 Yacht introduces reflective surfaces to bounce the light around the space. Uninterrupted views from dining to lounging in the expansive open-plan main deck. Luxurious stone finishes, detailed centrepiece bulkheads and statement lighting pieces create an elegant space for owners to truly immerse themselves in sumptuous surroundings. Recessed lighting in shelving and ceiling coves envelope owners in rich comfort.

The main deck is subtly zoned with framing screens on the port and starboard side to offer a sense of separation between the formal dining and comfortable saloon without restricting the space on board. In-set marble flooring in the dining room complemented by matching geometric design in the ceiling defines this space, while the saloon benefits from more angular furniture selections. The generous galley on the port side provides all servicing requirements for the crew.

The aft cockpit leads directly into the main deck saloon furnished with comfortable freestanding furniture. A large sofa to the port side, with integrated tabletop and shelving units, and beautiful feature coffee table provides a convenient space for lounging. On the opposing side, comfortable armchairs with a side table provide enough seating for twelve guests. Forward of the saloon is an exceptional dining space with an intimate round table design choice for up to twelve guests.

Further forward on the starboard side lies the entrance to a phenomenal main deck owners suite. Re-engineered to improve accessibility, the owners stateroom benefits from a completely flush floor to the en suite which allows ease of movement between spaces. Furnished to an exceptionally high standard, this private oasis features loose furniture, stunning cabinetry with integrated mirror TV, marble bulkheads and floor-to-ceiling windows. A soft upholstered bed is complemented by feature bedside tables. Freestanding companion seating on the starboard side comprises a chaise longue with an armchair and small coffee table. The beautiful dressing room with a vanity desk, shelving and drawers, leads to the en suite with dual wash basins, finished with elegant brassware and a rich mix of marble, metallic finishes and rustic timber. A walk-in rain shower with a bench seat and dedicated water closet completes this stunning masterpiece. With scope for customisation, owners can truly create a space that reflects their personal style and preferences.

Sunseeker 120 Yacht concept revealed at 2023 Monaco Yacht Show

The British yard describes its new Sunseeker 120 Yacht concept as “bold, athletic and effortless”

Sunseeker used the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show to unveil its latest superyacht concept in the form of the Sunseeker 120 Yacht.

Slotting into the range between the Sunseeker 116 Yacht and the Sunseeker 130 Yacht, this raised pilothouse design is characterised by “bold geometry, an athletic silhouette, immaculate style and effortless functionality” the yard explains.

Key features include a foredeck seating area that slides forward to reveal a hot tub, as well as a main deck owner’s suite with full-height windows.

Meanwhile, the transom features a gull-wing door that conceals a day head and shower, as well as enough storage space for a 6m tender and two jet skis.

The hull design has been optimised for fuel efficiency, meaning that the Sunseeker 120 Yacht can hit a top speed of 20 knots powered by a pair of 2,000hp MTU V12 engines – relatively small for a yacht of this size.

Dial that speed back to 10 knots and a cruising range of 1,730nm will be possible, the yard estimates.

Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.

10 Superyacht Concepts With Outrageous Features, From a 560-Foot Track to a Private Marina

Want the world's largest floating structure or a ufo-style vessel with a glassed-in owner's suite these designs range from fantasy to buildable tomorrow., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Superyacht Concepts

Among the most outrageous yachts ever built, Sailing Yacht A and Yas are top of the list. The polarizing designs are defined by their exteriors— A for its fortress aesthetic and the former navy frigate Yas for its dolphin-like appearance. Love them or loathe them, they break from conventional yacht design and show what can be done with a little fresh thinking. That’s exactly what concepts are intended to do, and some of the world’s most outrageous examples take it to the extreme.

“Yacht concepts drive human evolution in maritime adventure,” says Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts . “It is one of the oldest and purest forms of work, as humans have been preparing to take to the sea for centuries in search of a better world. Each concept carries a small part of our future at sea.”

But the concepts have gone beyond simple sea vessels. From the Airyacht, with its detachable upper blimp structure, to U-Boat Worx’s Nautilus that can travel underwater at 10 knots, superyachts are no longer limited to the surface. Shape, size, amenities and propulsion are all up for grabs, and some of the most eyebrow-raising examples pave the way for the yachts of tomorrow.

Here are 10 of our favorite outrageous yacht concepts ever launched.

Pangeos — The World’s Largest Floating Structure

sun yacht concept

Italian design studio Lazzarini is known for its far-fetched ideas, which include a swan-shaped yacht and floating seaports. Pangeos is its interpretation of the world’s largest floating structure. The 1,800-foot-long “terayacht” (which also measures 2,000 feet across at its widest point) is named after Pangea, a supercontinent that existed 335 million years ago. This Pangea is estimated to accommodate 60,000 guests. The premise is an emissions-free city that can sail around the world. Designed in the shape of a giant turtle clad in solar panels, the concept includes multiple structures with a rooftop shopping mall, restaurants, and houses. There are also gardens, pools, and a large beach club, as well as helipads, hangars and marinas to store helicopters, toys, and tenders. Pangeos is powered by nine electric motors of 16,800 hp each, with the “wings” drawing more power from the waves and wind. Lazzarini estimates the build cost would be $8 billion.

VY.01 — Standout Feature: Indoor Garden

sun yacht concept

Gardens and superyachts don’t typically mix. It can be challenging to keep plants alive at sea since gardening requires substantial care and resources. But that didn’t stop German architects 3deluxe from penning VY.01 , a low carbon-emission superyacht concept with a greenhouse and vegetable garden. Billed as a “paradisiacal biotope,” the concept catamaran focuses on onboard self-sufficiency. In addition to a hydrogen fuel-cell system and electric propulsion, the vessel has solar panels on the rooftop to generate clean energy for the seawater desalination system that provides water for the plants. Other features include large deck spaces, open-plan living, a saltwater pool, and a mini marina for tenders and toys.

Domus — Standout Feature: An Experimental Open Plan Layout

sun yacht concept

This 131-foot-long solar sailing trimaran by Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest has 8,500 square feet of interior space, more than double the volume of other yachts with similar lengths. Domus , meaning a single-story home divided into two parts, is defined by a flat and wide superstructure, containing multiple guest areas that lead to a central atrium. The full-beam design is spread across two decks, with two owner’s suites that each have adjoining salons. There is also a cinema, gym, spa, and pool. When sailing, Domus will be able to heel at an angle of two degrees to reduce drag while also guaranteeing a comfortable guest experience with minimal rolling. It also uses a combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology, and hydrogen fuel cells for unlimited range and zero emissions. If that’s not enough, it’s fitted with a sail for extra wind power.

EXPV — Standout Feature: Floating Glass Walkway Connecting Two Deckhouses

sun yacht concept

Over the years, Feadship has developed engineered yacht concepts that not only bring something new to yacht design, but also are ready to be built. The 285-foot EXPV , which the Dutch yard developed in collaboration with British studio Harrison Eidsgaard, is an explorer with a difference. The vessel has two deckhouses connected by a suspended glass walkway that separates the private owner’s quarters from the guest areas. The full-beam owner’s apartment, measuring 44 feet across, has an observation room, a helideck, and a private foredeck sun lounge. The other six guest cabins face the sea. On the lower deck, the beach club has folding platforms on both sides, an indoor swimming pool, and a skylight. A tender deck is located directly below. The mast holds a two-person pod that travels above the radar domes for exceptional views. The yacht also has hybrid diesel-electric propulsion.

Cantharus — Standout Feature: Underwater Lounge

sun yacht concept

Cantharus is about being immersed in nature. American designer Darin Osborne’s Cantharus is a vessel with unrestricted views of the ocean, above and below deck, to encourage guests to be at one with their surroundings. The 226-foot concept has an underwater lounge and office amidship that converts into an owner’s cabin. The space holds a piano, formal dining table, and entertainment system. More panoramic vistas are on the upper bridge. On the main deck aft, there is a Jacuzzi that doubles as a stage, and a bar and DJ booth. At night, underwater lights illuminate the ocean, shining a spotlight on the behemoths of the deep.

Galileo² — Standout Feature: A Private Marina

sun yacht concept

Described as the “catamaran that costs $500 billion to build,” the 656-foot Galileo² stretches the imagination in all directions. German naval architects Beiderbeck Designs, whose most notable builds include the 305-foot Eos and 233-foot Skat , conceived the multihull during the pandemic. It was clearly ahead of its time. Equipped with a methanol powerplant, it also has a 19,000-nautical-mile range, a retractable restaurant, and a 262-foot pier for the 38 guests to take walks at sea. Along with 75 crew, the yacht has a private marina with 260 feet of dock space—enough for 25 boats, submersibles, and toys. Other key features include an outdoor cinema, a hospital, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Phoenicia — Standout Feature: Articulated Helipad

sun yacht concept

Igor Lobanov’s sailing concept Phoenicia catches the eye with a reverse bow, a raised bowsprit, and an Arabian-inspired cutout on the superstructure that casts shadows across the yacht’s exterior decks. Even more dramatic are the masts on the main deck behind a glass-walled gallery. The yacht, a bridge between old and new, fuses a large traditional sail rig with an articulated helipad that unfolds from the roof of the owner’s suite. At night, 33 laser lights shine into the water, giving the impression that the yacht has two decks of oars.

Project L — Standout Feature: An Underwater Glass-Encased Owner’s Suite

sun yacht concept

French designer Thierry Gauguin is a long-time collaborator of Philippe Starck, with projects that include Venus , the 260-foot Feadship built for Steve Jobs. His ultra-modern 394-foot concept Project L is his first solo design. Conceived for long, oceangoing passages with diesel-electric propulsion, it is fitted out with a glass-encased underwater owner’s suite at the bow. The bullet-like exterior blends the naval architecture of a sailing vessel with motoryacht convenience. Outdoor deck areas are limited to the small sun deck and an extendable beach club at the stern, both of which have pools. Yet the design also includes a dinghy bay, a heliport, a car garage, and even an underwater escape pod for Bond-like exits.

Ocean Odyssey — Standout Feature: A 590-Foot Running Track

sun yacht concept

Penned by Italian designer Marco Casali as part of his 2020 “Owner for a Day” initiative, the 360-foot Ocean Odyssey is a floating hub of operations based on features requested by a yachting journalist. The vessel is defined by a two-level glass superstructure, which conceals a high-tech media center and a signature 590-foot running track. Its two-level stern works as a swimming pool (with lounges) on the upper-level beach club), as well as a private port to accommodate a custom 50-foot tender in a floating slip. More seating is found on the foredeck and bridge deck, while a helipad on the top deck allows for easy guest transfer anywhere in the world.

Protean 95 — Standout Feature: An Adaptive Platform

sun yacht concept

The 312-foot Protean 95 is all about flexibility. Designed by Dutch studio CBSPRO Maritime to meet a variety of owners’ needs, it can be used as a support vessel, an explorer yacht, or a mothership for sportfishing tournaments and sailing regattas. The hybrid electric yacht can also serve as a floating laboratory and research vessel for oceanographic expeditions, helped by its 8,000-nautical-mile range. The open aft deck is a multifaceted heli-facility that can accommodate an 18-passenger helicopter. It also has a helipad, under-deck equipment hangar, and refueling area, as well as space for a submersible, multiple tenders and other pleasure craft. Amenities for the 20 guests include a spa, gym, cinema, and pool.
