Entries are now open for the UK’s biggest yacht race – the Round the Island Race 2023.
The event – the fourth largest mass participation event in the country – is organised annually by the Island Sailing Club, based on the Isle of Wight .
Last year over 1,100 boats took part in the 50-mile race, crossing the start line in front of the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes.

Line honours went to Julian Linton’s Grand Prix multihull N.R.B , which completed the circumnavigation of the island in a time of 4h19m. The first monohull to cross the finish line was Ian Atkins’ GP42 Dark’n’Stormy , in a time of 4h54m.
The Round the Island Race 2023 is expected to attract over a thousand entries – both pro and amateur – with boats of all sizes racing on an equal footing on 1 July 2023.

The race director, David Atkinson said: “We can’t wait for this year’s edition of the race; I’ve ordered a moderate south-westerly breeze and lots of sunshine! I’d say if you only race once this year, make it Round the Island Race – we guarantee you’ll have a wonderful time with your friends and family.
“Our team will be there to support all the competitors as they plan their race, including some great online tools such as blogs, videos and webinars. We know everyone loves to continue the fun onshore after the race so we’re planning some après-race parties on Saturday evening.”

Salamander your #SpectatorBoat finding the best location for spectating the Yarmouth Speed Festival, the Round the Isle of Wight Powerboat Race and the 1 Mile Speed Runs
Salamander is heated and perfectly suited for year round use, both sailing and cruising under motor. Feel free to wander around the extensive teak decks with their protective teak handrail as we look for the best location for you to see the event.
Salamander your #SpectatorBoat also has a warm saloon for great all weather spectating.
Where is the best place to see the UKOPRA Round the Isle of Wight Powerboat Race and where to find the Salamander Spectator Boat?
The Salamander Spectator Boat is normally found in Berthon Lymington Marina, in the Georgian town of Lymington.
Our experience confirms that the normally sheltered waters by Hurst Castle and Hurst Lighthouse is the best place to see the start of the Round The Isle of Wight UKOPRA Powerboat Race from onboard the Salamander Spectator Boat.
Lymington is therefore the preferred departure point.
Bespoke arrangements might be possible to meet guests in Lymington, Buckler's Hard on the Beaulieu River, Southampton, the Hamble, Portsmouth and Gosport in Hampshire, Cowes and Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.
Lymington, Yarmouth, Cowes, Hamble, Southampton and Portsmouth are well served by trains and ferries making overland connections for boarding and disembarking Salamander very easy.
Lymington, The New Forest and the Isle of Wight are unique destination venues for some amazing scenery, with luxurious boutique hotels and excellent fine dining providing the perfect backdrop to combine with some wonderful sailing on board Salamander, a traditional yacht with a classically designed teak interior .
Transfers from hotels can be arranged.

Devil’s Isle Racing chase Round the Island Power Boat Race treble
Expectations are high in the Devil’s Isle Racing camp heading into the prestigious Rubis Around the Island Powerboat Race tomorrow.
The team are seeking to defend their S class and A class titles and also claim D class honours with a brand-new 22-foot monohull boat.
“We are going for a triple this year,” Devil’s Isle Racing part-owner and racer Andrew Cottingham told The Royal Gazette . “We are going to try and defend our titles and we have another boat in our team as well.
“Now we have A class entry, D class entry and an S class entry.”
Henry Talbot and co-pilot Cottingham seized S class honours and were the first boat to finish last year’s race competing in their catamaran.
“We haven’t had any competition up until the last race in Dockyard, so it’s been basically a season of practice for us,” Cottingham added.
“But Around the Island is always a big hype and so that’s what we guys are looking forward to.”
Cottingham’s fellow owners Shane Madeiros and Errin Butterfield are back to defend their A class title, while Shaki Easton and M’Kai Hodsoll are representing Devil’s Isle racing in D class for the first time.
Easton and Hodsoll are venturing somewhat into the unknown, having spent very little time acclimatising to their new boat.
“It’s untested and we’ve been working with what we’ve got right now,” Cottingham said.
“We put it over for the first time [on Friday], so it’s kind of last-minute. But we’re happy with how it’s running right now — it’s OK.
“We have a lot more work to do, but it will have to do for now.
“But our S class boat is always ready. That’s been tested and proven, so that one is ready to go and Shane and Errin are also all ready to go in the A class boat.”
Also defending their title are last year’s C class winners Chad Sutherland and Lee Wilson.
As well as the new BV class, a new champion will be crowned in the D class and B class this year, as the team of Mark Selley and Jordan Fletcher and Quincé Dowling and Tai Bean are not back to defend their titles.
Dowling and Bean have moved up to the C class, while Selley and Fletcher are not taking part at all.
This year’s event will again feature the junior class races and jet-ski race where Cleveland Maybury is attempting to defend his title.
Maybury has his work cut out, as he is also competing in the BV class along with co-pilot Joshua Thompson in the main event.

- Round The Island Powerboat Race This Sunday
On Sunday [Aug 7] the Bermuda Powerboat Association [BPBA] will be hosting the Round The Island Powerboat Race .
A spokesperson said, “The day commences with junior races at Ferry Reach at 10:30am. Next there will be a jet ski race commencing at 12:30. We have 5 jet skis registered so far but hope this number will increase as we get closer.
“Finally powerboat racing commences at 2pm. A, B, C, D and S class boats have entered. So far there are 18 boats registered but this number is expected to grow after the final sign up meeting this evening.
“We have a number of crash boats that will be scattered around the island. The Coast Guard will be on hand to support crash boats. We advise it is an offence to disobey instructions given by any crash boat or Coast Guard.
“Pompano is an area many congregate to spectate. In previous years our racers have found it difficult to navigate through spectator boats anchored in the area and find it difficult to maintain their own race line. This years buoys will be placed along the Pompano Beach stretch. We ask for those intending to anchor to do so on the outside of these buoys. The teams will be racing between the shore line and the buoys.
“We ask for exceptional care and caution when moving around near the race course. Any wake thrown can have a disastrous effect on the racing boats. Care should be taken to not traverse over any of the race lines once the race has started. The race boats will be traveling at full speed – in excess of 100kph.”
