Learn a little more about our Riverfront Canal Cruises Operations Manager, Alex Dahm!

What’s your favorite part of heading up the Riverfront Canal Cruises program?

My favorite thing about the Riverfront Canal Cruises is spreading my enthusiasm! Whether I am introducing or reacquainting people with the fun and uniqueness of the Canal and Downtown Richmond, it's always a treat to watch people realize how much awesome stuff there is to see and do here. There is an overwhelming amount of history in Richmond, beginning long before its official founding in 1737, and it’s still an exciting place to explore and experience in 2021.

What’s your favorite fun fact regarding the James River and Kanawha Canal?

My Favorite fun fact is that the Canal was conceived by George Washington to be the first and fastest connection between the Mississippi and The Chesapeake Bay. That’s one heck of a transportation planning goal in the 18th Century!

What’s your favorite part of the Riverfront Canal Cruise experience?

All things change when you look at them from different points of view. My favorite thing is how different the city looks and sounds from the water. You really notice the quick transition from the urban landscape of downtown and the natural environment of the James River when you’re on a boat on the dividing line.

Why should people take a Riverfront Canal Cruise?

Because it’s fun of course! This is an entirely new way to experience downtown Richmond and the Riverfront and its exhilarating to look at the familiar with a new lens, be that historical or just literally being on the historical canal.

If you were going to plan a day downtown for someone, what would that day look like?

First, they would would wake up at the Quirk Hotel, then start with breakfast at Perly’s. Then, they would take an RVA Bike Share bike to The Valentine and then to Tredegar St. where they could tour the American Civil War Museum. After that, they could take an hour to paddle the James River on a rental kayak from Waterfront RVA. Then, a short walk down the Riverfront Canal Walk to either Casa Del Barco or Southern Railway Taphouse for lunch. After that, a 40-minute tour of the canal with the Riverfront Canal Cruises. Maybe then a little shopping in Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom and dinner on Broad Street. Afterward, a stroll up and down Broad checking out Richmond’s amazing galleries, at a First Friday’s Art Walk. After that, I would imagine that exhaustion would set in, so back to Quirk for a great night’s rest!

If you were going to describe the Riverfront Canal Walk in 5 words, what words would you choose?

Surprising, relaxing, connecting, historical and fun.

What would your dream Riverfront Canal Walk look like in 10 years?

I would love to see a reimagined Brown’s Island that is even more of a fantastic park with world class amenities. It would also be so exciting to see a Canal Walk that is even more connective to the natural environment, the various trail systems, and the city. The Canal Walk could and should tie everything together! Also, A canal walk that has increased commercial activity without sacrificing its unique charm.

The ride itself was underwhelming but the history was interesting. The canal is very small and not picturesque. Small children may enjoy the boat ride but you'll mainly take this tour for the history lesson.

This 40 minute boat trip down the canal is an enjoyable and relaxing summer activity. It was $17 for 1 adult and 1 senior. Kids under 3(or maybe 4) are free. The narrator had a lot of great knowledge about the history of Richmond and pointed out several highlights. What could definitely be improved, though, were the speakers on the boat. It was incredibly difficult to hear most of what he was saying. They cram people into the boat and not everyone gets under the covering so keep that in mind on especially hot days. At the ticket booth they sell water for $1. Also, the cashier said they usually send people across to the tap house for bathrooms but since on my visit it was closed, they were sending people a few blocks away on Cary Street to find someplace there. I found the Marriott hotel-just in case anyone else runs into the same issue with the tap house being closed. Parking is readily available nearby in both private and city-owned lots. If you're looking for a short but sweet Richmond activity, definitely consider the canal cruises!

Before heading to Richmond, I checked Groupon. I purchased two tickets for the price of one via Groupon, so it was an inexpensive little excursion. The half price discount is what the cruise is worth. Some of the tourists were fun and the guide was trying to be upbeat telling stories and joking with some of the tourists. He told stories about famous people's visits to Richmond. It was interesting that he said Abraham Lincoln was in the Shockoe Slip area just days before he was assassinated. He also said there were snapping turtles in the water, but we never saw any. We took many photos as it was a nice sunny day. It was much cooler than we anticipated, so I was shivering a little. Other than that, it was an enjoyable little ride.

$6 per person for a historical boat ride in Richmond?? Great deal! We were in town visiting friends and decided to check this tour out. Please note that the dock is a little tricky to find. We ended up walking behind some buildings on a train track and felt a bit lost, but found our way eventually! Our guide was great - you could tell that he was very much interested in the history of Richmond, and sharing it with others. The tour itself doesn't go very far out, or see anything fast paced or completely amazing, but he made everything much more interesting and fun!

I have been in Richmond for a year and a half now, yet I only went on the Canal Cruise recently. Now all I can ask is: why did I wait this long? My parents came down for the day and we were looking for something to do, and my dad spied this option in one of his many lists. We drove down, finding easy parking in a garage on Cary and Virginia street (which turned out to be FREE, since they don't start charging you to be there until 3 PM, good to know), and walked to the canal. The cruises leave on the hour, so we bought our tickets from the kiosk and waited. It was a bit of a warm day, though the kiosk had bottled water for $1 (major props for the lack of price gouging there, way to appreciate your customers waiting in the hotness), and the boat itself had spinning fans once we boarded. The tour itself was lively and fun. You end up taking a short jaunt west, then down the canal a bit east. Our tour guide was a riot ("They call me Cotton because of the hair, not sure I'm the biggest fan of that!") and made the experience extremely memorable, not to mention that he was extremely knowledgeable about the city's history. The tour lasted about 40 minutes or so and made for a pleasant ride. I highly recommend this to visitors and natives alike. This is a great place for a date, family outing, or even a solo exploration of the canals that made Richmond a bustling trading port back in Washington's day. Overall: 5.0 stars ------------ Pros: - Extremely fun and a great activity for groups. - Lively tour guides. - Fans and cheap water means that they actually care about your comfort and well-being, points for that! - Great for kids too, or at least the ones on this trip seemed to enjoy it immensely. Cons: - Nothing, really. It's a great value for the money. They have restaurants nearby too, so make an evening out of it!

I really enjoyed this peaceful, relaxing tour of the canal. I learned so much from our tour guide, Mr. "High Cotton". I finally found out why Shockhoe Slip is called Shockoe Slip. LOL!! 40 minute tour on a covered boat for $5. We took guests from out of town on the cruise and they enjoyed it. It is a historic cruise about the canals and canal locks of Richmond. It is not a cruise to see the city of Richmond. If you don't like history of this sort, it may not be the cruise for you...but perhaps you will find it peaceful at the least.

I took a Riverfront Historic Canal Cruise on 8/18/18. I had never been to Richmond, VA and thought this would be an interesting way to explore the city. The check in and overall operation of the business runs very smooth. I am glad we came a little early to get my ticket. The boat is not huge and it does fill up and what you would assume are peak times. I will say if you are not petite you may feel a little cramped on the boat but it is not a long ride so it is doable. I thought. Our tour guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. He really seemed to enjoy his job. The tour itself was fine and you got to see parts of the city with limited walking access. However nothing about the tour was like "wow" to me. In a nutshell a reasonable priced activity in Richmond if want to explore but don't feel like walking.

Photo of Geoff B.

High Cotton was informative , delightful, and presented the tour very nicely. It's not a long trip but the things you learn about history and the early transportation systems of Richmond and the surrounding areas are worth the price and more!

riverboat cruise richmond

The ride started off nice enough. As expected, a 40-minute tour of the canal with interesting historical facts and some fun nature along the way. What WASN'T expected was our tour guide's casual racism on the way back. She went off script to tell our full boat (of mixed races/ethnicities) how she thinks confederate monuments should stay put, mimicked bad 'accents', as well as stating "think about it, if you lived in the South, you would've fought too." etc... There was more, but I think I blacked out from discomfort. I tend to think most of the group - particularly all the people of color - would disagree with her espoused opinions. But regardless, her speech went on for what felt like a very long time. It was awkward, uncomfortable, tactless, and unnecessary. We paid to hear the history of the canal. Not for one tour guide's opinion about race relations and a war that was lost. Already recommending to friends they skip this and see the city other ways.

Heads up. Closed until April 13th but no mention on website. We will try again some other time.
