Designed in 1981 by Ron Holder and built by Hobie Cat, there are over 5000 Holder 12’s sailing and over two dozen active racing fleets in the United States.

With its free standing cat-boat rig and retractable dagger board, the Holder 12 features a long waterline yet weighs only 115 pounds. This makes it a fast and responsive addition to the Yacht Club racing fleet.

The best way to describe the Holder 12 is that it is light, fast and fun, just like the Junior Yacht Club. The Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club Holder Fleet was started in 1986. Sailors of all ages race in this boat.

Review of Holder 12

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The Holder 12 is equipped with a daggerboard keel. A daggerboard is a lifting keel that can be lowered and raised, allowing the boat to enter shallow waters as well.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.55 - 0.65 meter (1.80 - 2.10 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Holder 12 is about 37 kg/cm, alternatively 208 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 37 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 208 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Maintenance

This section is reserved boat owner's modifications, improvements, etc. Here you might find (or contribute with) inspiration for your boat.

Do you have changes/improvements you would like to share? Upload a photo and describe what you have done.

We are always looking for new photos. If you can contribute with photos for Holder 12 it would be a great help.

Boat: 1984 Hobie Holder 12'
today. Feels dumb typing that since I only spent $150, but I’m excited to get out and play with it. I found a Hobie Holder 12 and was able to get it for $150.

The gentleman who it was 83 and did his best to show me how to rig it, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t do it right. Either way, I won’t remember everything he showed me. I can’t find any videos or instructions online. I found the original manual on the Hobie site, but it has pictures without much instruction.

Do any of you have a Hobie Holder or experience with one? I’d love any I can get on setting it up properly. Pictures coming in a minute. Didn’t realize I have to post them somewhere else first.

have some dings. I’m hoping that’s not a big issue. I’m just wanting to use this as a learner and something my can learn/play on. Not worried about aesthetics, as long as it functions. Do I need to worry about any of these dings? If so, what’s the best way to fix them?

, which looks like it might be opening up, might need more than that. Essentially you need to grind down the damaged section to good, solid material, and then use with some cloth and mat to build it back so that it doesn’t open up the way it seems to be starting to. Let everything dry out thoroughly before getting the resin out.

Our Kiwanis Community Sailing club has a Holder 12. Last year a big wind blew it over and we lost the dagger board. Does anyone know where we could locate a serviceable dagger board for the kids to use?

CalebD

Holder 12' looks sportier than a sunfish. Hobie Cat's answer to the Laser. You could possibly use a Laser or Sunfish daggerboard as a replacement. There is also a Yahoo group for the Holder 12' http://groups.yahoo.com/group/holder12/ where you might find other suggestions. I found them by doing a google search on: Holder 12' sailboat. If you are really ambitious you could fabricate (make) a new one if you still have the old one around to use as a model for the dimensions. Better yet, get someone to supervise the kids to make one themselves. I would use marine grade 3/4" ply for the basic shape and overcoat it with epoxy and cloth, then sand and paint. Good luck.

Model 34 Swing Keel - Shoal Draft

Category Sloop Sailboats

Posted Over 1 Month

We have owned "Surprise" since 2011. We have campaigned the boat successfully on the Bohemia River and upper Chesapeake Bay. The swing keel draws only 4’ when up and 6’10” when the board is down, making it prefect for the upper Chesapeake. Last season she won the ERYC Bohemia Bay Wednesday Night Racing series and the Gene McCord Memorial Race. “Surprise” continues to be a fast and competitive racer. The 150 genoa is on its second season. Sail inventory includes a main, #1 genoa, 1 spinnaker, 1 asymmetric drifter, … In addition, she has proved a comfortable cruiser for those times when we weren't racing. This 1980 C&C 34 Sloop offers a great deal of comfortable cruising for a very reasonable price. She has beautiful lines and is a great all-round boat with a good turn of speed. She is roomy below decks with over 6 feet of headroom and accommodations for six. Side decks are large permitting easy movement around the boat, and forward is a large anchor locker. Her bottom was painted in spring of 2022. The boat is in very good shape with a large V-Berth, Convertible Settee that sleeps 2 and a Port Aft Bunk that sleeps 1. Galley has a 3-burner stove/oven, sink and top loading ice chest. A single head to port and large hanging locker before the V-Berth. She has a Yanmar 2QM20 20 HP Diesel, 2 - 12V batteries + Inverter, Keel stepped mast, Furling Jib, two Danforth Anchors + 50 feet chain and 200 foot of rope, Maroon Sail Cover that matches Bimini, Dodger and wench covers. All lines led into the cockpit, sailing instruments in cockpit, 3 bumpers, and 50-foot Shore power cable. She has a custom cover for the winter. The new owner gets all this plus the equipment and accessories listed below. The 34 is considered one of C&C's better designs, equipped for racing and cruising. Call for a showing today. Great condition! We purchased a larger sailboat, time to move the Mac on to its next owner! See pictures below description. ALL pictures of the actual hull for sale As you may know Macgregor is no longer building sailboats. The new company Tattoo Yachts, is also no longer producing a 26 foot sailboat. The supplies of these boats are limited to the boats that are already made. This is a perfect opportunity to purchase one of the best condition 26M sailboats out there. The trailer is the superior (despite popular belief) steel trailer. (later models have an aluminum frame, but still have a STEEL tongue, axle, bunk supports which all rust/fail as well). The trailer with this boat was professionally rebuilt with a 1/4" thick steel tongue, rustproofed on the inside (where ALL the Macgregor trailers fail first) and painted with rustproofing paint. There is a new surge brake actuator, as well as new brake calipers and brake pads. The brake line is made of stainless steel. The lighting system is newly wired with LED lights. New winch, winch strap, new security chain, new tongue winch. Bunk boards rebuilt as well. The factory trailer is superior to many aftermarket ones, as it allows the lowest trailering height (allowing launching in shallow ramps) AND a front ladder to dramatically ease launchingLots of well thought out upgrades!SailsNEW (used 1 season) MainsailGeneoa with UV strip sewn in (cleaned, serviced, folded)Roller furler with line led aft with cleat for Geneoaboots installed on spreader endsSail handlingTopling lift installedMain halyard led aftStock rotating mast with locking pin (for trailering or running down wind)ElectronicsGarmin 440s GPS Plotter and depth sounder (shoot through hull) included/installedStandard Horizon VHF radio with DSC - hooked up to GPSWired remote VHF Mic in cockpitmast top mounted VHF antennaElectrical8 circuit Blue Sea breaker panellight control subpanel2 Marine Deep Cycle batteries (starting and house) - Group 24Battery switches with Automatic Charging relay (automatically charges bothbatteries, but keeps them separated when not being charged!)110 Inverter with plug12v plugs in cockpit and cabinLightingStandard macgregor lightsAnchor light on mast topforedeck lightcockpit light under consoleHead5 gallon portable headGalleyOrigo Alcohol stoveelectric fresh water water pump with 50 gallon flexible tank and transom fill.Large cooler with tiedown2 piece table, doubles as a cockpit tableInteriorStock Macgregor cushionsNew custom carpetstorage bins and pocketsSeveral grab handles mounted throughout the interiorSolar vent fan in foredeck hatchStainless Steel hatch holder2 fire extinguishersCockpitCustom Stern rail seats installedCustom rudder control line with blocks to reduce lifting effort !Upgraded steering cablesLarge Ritchie compassCustom made, 2 piece hatchboards with screens and shades (in addition to factory solid hatchboard)Custom transom mesh guard (keep stuff from falling out the back!)Transom swim laddergrab rail mounted on hatchEngineRECENTLY SERVICED - carbs rebuilt/sync'ed; impeller replaced.Turnkey ready to go!50 HP Honda outboard with engine steering linkageupgraded throttle cables12 Gallon fuel tankCanvasCustom padded lifeline coversCustom Sailcover3 Custom made sheetbagscustom chart pockets in cockpit6' Bimini covers the entire cockpitMast handling:Mast raising system with brake winch with removable baby staysPVC roller furler support for traileringquick release removable spreadersOthermast top mounted windexFlag pole with flag for sternburgee flag block on spreader with stay mounted cleat2:1 blocks installed for daggerboard raising'Jam' cleat installed for easier daggerboard handlingCustom/improved rudder raising system with pop-up cleats and jamb cleatsAnchorDelta plow200' anchor rode6' chainTrailerNew tounge winchnew surge brake2" trailer ball requiredNew stainless steel brake lineNew tires and wheelsLED lights Please note, these pictures were taken over the years. This boat has been well maintained and significantly upgraded throughout. This sale includes full sailboat documentation, and the sailboat has a clean title. The sailboat (inside and out) is in real nice condition, and show only normal wear for a sailboat of its age. The sailboat has seen lots of maintenance, upgrades and replacements. She starts, runs, motors, and sails very nicely. The fiberglass interior and interior wood trim are all in good condition. Ship emergency on Lake Superior is latest safety mishap for Great Lakes freighter operator

(Tribune News Service) — Lake Superior was calm, and the Michipicoten was plying deep waters June 8 when the ship’s crew heard a loud bang.

The 698-foot freighter suddenly began taking on water near Isle Royale. The Michipicoten issued a mayday, and the U.S. Coast Guard rushed to the scene, evacuating half the ship’s 22 crew members. The vessel limped to Thunder Bay, Ontario, where inspectors found the culprit: a 13-foot crack in its hull.

“It’s really unusual to basically be out in the middle of the lake and start taking on water,” said Thom Holden, a Great Lakes shipwreck and shipping historian in Superior, Wis.

Indeed, the Michipicoten incident is a rarity on the Great Lakes: a full-blown emergency on a commercial freighter. But it was the latest of several mishaps in recent years on ships that Rand Logistics, one of the largest Great Lakes carriers, operates.

One Rand ship caught fire in Lake Erie in May 2023 and then burned again while docked in Ashtabula, Ohio, in March.

Two weeks later, another Rand vessel hit a navigational aid near Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., shutting down traffic in a vital shipping artery for 40 hours. Yet another Rand ship grounded near Detroit in November.

The U.S. Coast Guard deemed two other groundings by Rand ships in the past two years as “serious marine incidents.” And last summer, a Rand-owned ship leaked 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel into Lake Michigan after a hull breach in a fuel tank.

“That is a lot of incidents in a short time,” said Roger LeLievre, president of the Marine Historical Society of Detroit and publisher of “Know Your Ships,” an annual Great Lakes shipping guide.

“Rand Logistics has had an exceptionally bad first part of the year, and they have been having issues for a couple of years now,” he said

Still, the Coast Guard hasn’t found any “deeper safety concerns” with Rand’s fleet.

“There is nothing conclusive that shows a broader safety or maintenance issue for Rand or its subsidiaries,” said Lt. Phillip Gurtler, a spokesman for the Coast Guard’s Great Lakes district in Cleveland.

Rand, based in suburban Buffalo, N.Y., defended its safety record in a statement: “The safety of our employees, proper maintenance of our vessels and commitment to the environment are our top priorities at Rand Logistics.”

“We regularly conduct safety training programs for our employees and since 2020 have invested over $230 million in the maintenance and improvement of our vessels, which are highly regulated. … We adhere to all industry safety and operating standards.”

The outcome of the Michipicoten incident could have been much worse.

The 72-year-old vessel set out from Two Harbors with a load of iron ore, destined for Algoma Steel’s big mill in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The Canadian-flagged Michipicoten was 38 miles southwest of Isle Royale when around 6:15 a.m., it began taking on water — a lot of it.

The crew reported that 300 tons of water rushed in every 30 minutes, said Lt. Joe Snyder, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The loud bang led the crew to initially speculate that the vessel had hit something, Snyder said, even though the Michipicoten was in water that was 1,300 feet deep.

The ship, listing to one side, issued a distress call. The Coast Guard responded with a helicopter and a boat. A National Park Service boat also came to the Michipicoten’s aid, as did the Edwin H. Gott, a big commercial ship in the vicinity.

A seafarer aboard the Michipicoten, Kent Knechtel, described “a day of pure terror” with crew members not knowing if they “would see another day.”

The crew hoped the ship’s pumps — working furiously to redistribute water — would not fail, according to Knechtel, whose wife posted his story to a Facebook page, Ship Junkies — Lakes, Locks & Rivers.

“We were very lucky the weather was on our side for a change,” Knechtel’s message said. When the hull cracked, the wind was blowing at 23 mph, waves were 1 foot high, and visibility was good, according to the Coast Guard.

“The quick response of the officers and the crew, that is a part of this story,” Holden said. “They did a remarkable job in saving themselves.”

In Thunder Bay, divers discovered a 13-foot stress fracture, ¼ to 1 inch wide running lengthwise mostly on the ship’s front bottom, Snyder said.

The Coast Guard is investigating the incident, as is Transport Canada, which regulates Canadian ships.

Rand’s ships ferry bulk cargo like iron ore, limestone and coal. Many are familiar to boat watchers in Duluth-Superior.

The company operates at least 20 vessels. The ships are parceled out under a Canadian-flag fleet subsidiary Lower Lakes Towing runs, and two subsidiaries that operate U.S.-flag ships, Grand River Navigation and American Steamship.

Incidents in recent years involve ships from Lower Lakes and Grand River.

The 81-year-old Cuyahoga caught fire on the Canadian side of Lake Erie in May 2023. The fire struck the engine room, and the ship lost propulsion. The Canadian Coast Guard, responding to a mayday call, evacuated eight of its 20 crew members. There were no injuries.

The Cuyahoga returned to service. It was fitting out for the 2024 shipping season at an Ashtabula dock — with both crew members and contractors aboard — when a huge fire erupted, said Ashtabula Fire Marshal Steve Chase.

The unintentional blaze caused about $30 million in damage, a fire department report said.

“We believe we dodged a much greater impact by sheer luck of timing,” Chase said.

The fire started right after lunch break, just before contract workers were to return to the ship’s ballast tanks.

“If it would have happened 10 to 20 minutes later, in all likelihood, there would have been fatalities,” Chase said. “It would have been extremely difficult to get to them before being overcome by smoke.”

The Tecumseh, another Canadian-flagged Rand ship, had an engine room fire in December 2019. The ship was motoring down the Detroit River near Windsor, Ontario, when a fuel hose assembly failed and sprayed oil on an engine, igniting the blaze, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada concluded.

Before the fire, the Tecumseh’s engines had “leaks” and “failures” in their fuel hoses, the safety board found. The board concluded that the ship had “no guidance” for the testing, inspection or maintenance schedules of its fuel hose assemblies. The board also found several other shortcomings with the vessel and its fire safety systems.

There were no injuries, and the company scrapped the badly damaged Tecumseh a few years after the fire.

Established in 2004, Rand Logistics filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018. A sinking Canadian currency had left Rand in a bind: Most of its debt was calculated in U.S. dollars, while 60% of its operating profits at the time were in Canadian dollars.

To complicate matters, the company sank $29 million into capital projects in 2019, primarily for substantial steel work on three ships. Deferring maintenance and repair on the vessels precipitated the costly project, according to a bankruptcy court filing.

A private equity group, American Industrial Partners (AIP), bought Rand out of bankruptcy and then sold a minority stake in the ship operator to another private equity outfit, Oaktree Capital Management. AIP exited its stake in Rand in February 2023.

This spring, Oaktree agreed to spin off most of its transportation infrastructure business — which includes Rand — to a new private equity firm led by two former Oaktree executives.

They will inherit a fleet that, according to Coast Guard records, has had several problems in recent years beyond fires and a hull failure.

In March, the American Mariner hit a concrete-and-steel navigational marker in the St. Mary’s River system after the ship’s steering failed. The St. Mary’s, which connects Lake Superior to the lower Great Lakes, closed for 40 hours, delaying 29 ships.

In November, the American Courage ran aground for about 12 hours in the St. Clair River near Detroit, its second grounding in 18 months. In December 2022, the American Courage’s bow thruster, which provides sideways movement, failed while the ship plied the Cuyahoga River through Cleveland. The vessel hit a boardwalk. The bow thruster had failed before the incident as well.

The John J. Boland ran aground in April 2023, causing $1 million in damages. Nine months earlier, the integrated tug-barge Olive M. Moore/Menominee grounded, causing $300,000 in damages. The Coast Guard appeared to deem both “serious marine incidents” because of the costs.

As for the Michipicoten, it patched up in Thunder Bay and then sailed to Superior, Wis. There, it is undergoing further repairs in drydock at Fraser Shipyards.

Meanwhile, the Lakes shipping community is speculating on what ultimately caused the most serious marine incident on Lake Superior in many years.

“There has to be something that started that crack on the Michipicoten,” ship historian Holden said, “and once it started, it went like the dickens.”

1986 Hobie Holder 12

  • Description

Seller's Description

Selling my 1986 Hobie Holder 12 foot sailing dinghy with trailer.

I purchased this boat to learn how to sail and now I’m looking to upgrade to a larger double handed dinghy. The boat and trailer are registered and in great condition. I just replaced the lights on the trailer to new waterproof LEDs.

Ready to tow away and sail - I went out on a lake this weekend.

Perfect for 1 or 2 with more room than most boats its size.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Ace earns Brown a new boat; Kelce talks Swift; notes from Friday's ACC celebrity golf

holden 12 sailboat

His fifth career ace came at a perfect time for Tim Brown: on a course next to a lake.

The former Los Angeles Raiders receiver made a hole-in-one on hole No. 12 Friday at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

He didn't realize it was in the hole at first but soon found out he won the MasterCraft boat on display nearby, worth an estimated $225,000.

His ace on the 143-yard No. 12 hole was Brown's first in the celebrity tournament. He has played in the ACC for 24 years.

"I didn't hit it the way I wanted to. I was trying to hit it up to the right and I pulled it a little bit. I was starting to complain and noticed the ball was going at the hole. Of course I didn't think it was going to go in," Brown said. "But then the crowd up there went crazy, and I didn't even know about the boat. I saw the boat there. And Marcus Allen said, ‘Man, you just won a boat.’ I was like, ‘What?’ We really went crazy after that, getting up on the boat dancing doing the whole thing. It was a great moment."

Brown finished with 17 points for the round and is tied for eighth place in the 90-player field.

Brown also made an ace on the par-3 course at Augusta a few months ago. He also had aces at TPC Sawgrass and at Pebble Beach, among other courses.

Brown said his father always had a boat, called "Lucky Lady," which now sits in his mother's driveway. He said the new boat could replace that one.

Jerry Rice, who played for the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Raiders and Seattle Seahawks, was nearby and saw Brown's ball go in the hole.

"He came over and hugged me. But it was — it's not really a real hug. It was a 'that should have been me' hug," Brown said smiling. "But, no, Jerry, we shared these types of things before. So that was great."

Brown won the Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

"In my office I have the Heisman. I have the Hall of Fame bust and I have the ball from TPC Sawgrass that I made. And my boy's like, ‘Look, man, I know this football thing is special, but that golf ball, what you did, that may be the best things you've ever done,’" Brown said. "Doing it in this situation in a tournament with a prize, it's second to none. You can't throw out the Heisman and Hall of Fame, but these rank high, no doubt."

Brown said he does not drink, but he would buy rounds of lemonade Friday night, as is customary when people make a hole-in-one.

Travis Kelce talks football, golf and Taylor Swift

Travis Kelce, who is making his sixth appearance in the ACC, said he feels fortunate to be invited back every year.

"It must be those karaoke contests that keep me coming back, because it's definitely not been my golf," Kelce said. "I get to play with my brother and The Miz, the Cleveland crew, we'll have some fun out there, and the crowd looks electric. It's always a blast out here in Tahoe."

This NFL season, Kelce will try to help the Kanas City Chiefs accomplish something that has never been done: win three straight Super Bowls.

Kelce said the Chiefs have the players to do it.

"We've got Xavier Worthy. We've got Marquise Brown. We've got some dawgs. We have some unbelievable talent, some great coaches, and obviously the front office that brings it all together. We've got the full arsenal over there in Kansas City," he said. "You've got to revamp the team every single year. You've got to remold the team. Hopefully out in Saint Joe (St. Joseph, Missouri, site of Kansas City’s training camp) we can get a head start on that. And through the course of the season, as you saw last year, we got better as the season went on. It's going to be a long haul if we get a chance to do it. I'm excited to get back into the football world. It's been a crazy offseason for me, so I'm ready to get back to work."

Kelce has become more well-known than he was during the first part of his NFL career, due to his dating Taylor Swift.

He said the year he has been with Swift has been the best of his life.

"It's been the funnest year of my life. I can definitely say that. I said that after the Super Bowl when I played my brother and meeting my brother at the mountaintop was the peak of my life," Kelce said. "And it just keeps going up and up from there. Who knows, man, who knows where this thing goes if I get a chance to win another one."

His brother, Jason Kelce recorded the longest drive on the par-5 hole No. 16 at Edgewood Tahoe Resort, with a distance of 322 yards. Kelce will receive $5,000 to go toward a charity of his choice.

Charles Barkley's Friday round at Tahoe celebrity golf tournament

Charles Barkley had a good round on Friday, finishing with three points after getting two birdies and sitting in a tie for 48th place with Davante Adams, Chris Harrison and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

"It's the best I've ever probably played anywhere, probably," Barkley said. "But I played really well. I was really confident. I played great today, and I'm really looking forward to the next couple days."

Barkley said his the greens at Edgewood did not seem as fast as in previous years.

"I made great shots, obviously, and my caddie was great today, gave me some good reads," Barkley said. "And like I say, these greens, they don't seem like they're as fast as they were last year. But they're in perfect shape. Shout-out to my coach who's got me playing great golf."

Leaders at American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament

Adam Thielen recorded 24 points and sits alone atop the leaderboard after Friday's first round. Mardy Fish is in second with 23 points, followed by Derek Lowe and Joe Pavelski (21 points each), Mark Mulder and Dell Curry (19 points each), John Smoltz (18)m and four golfers with 17 points each, Annika Sorenstam, Jake Owen, Joe Mauer and Brown.

Leaderboard: Find all the scores from Friday's round at the ACC

Pavelski was on No. 12 when a bear and two cubs ran across the field nearby Friday morning.

"That was cool to see the momma with the cubs. You don't always see that on a golf course. It's pretty cool," Pavelski said. "You leave them alone. That was cool."

The course was packed with fans Friday, and tournament officials said it was sold out, as is Saturday's round.

"Everybody here kind of knows how it just keeps growing," Pavelski said. "That's the big thank-you to American Century, what they do, what the guys show up and do and the products you put out there and the amount of fun.

“But as an athlete for myself, hockey, it's all about the fans, playing, the atmosphere, how much they care about the game, how much we care about the game."

Thielen is in his eighth year playing the ACC and his best finish was a tie for fourth in 2022.

He tries to practice as much as he can while raising three children.

"I love the game of golf so I try to work on it as much as I can. I don't get to play a whole lot with three young kids," Thielen said. "But try to get time in a simulator, try to work on my game as much as I can, especially leading up to this week."

Dell Curry said his son Steph Curry, the defending ACC champion, was watching the round while preparing for the Paris Olympics.

"Steph's last words before he took off: 'You guys represent, play well.' He's been locked into the round, the scores all day. I'm proud of Seth. Seth played well. I think I gave him way too many points. I've got to pick my game up," Dell Curry said.

He said that to win the annual Curry family bet and win the title belt back from Steph, he needs to score 50 or more points and finish in the top 15. Seth has to score at least 20 points and finish in the top 35.

Modified Stableford scoring

The tournament, which is being televised through Sunday on NBC, Golf Channel and Peacock, uses a modified Stableford scoring system — 3 points for a birdie, 1 for a par, 0 for a bogey and minus-2 for a double bogey or worse.

Saturday : NBC, Peacock,  11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. PT (Live) Sunday :  NBC. Peacock  11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. PT (Live)

‘Alcohol does appear to be a factor’ in Keys boat crash injuring 8, investigators say

Boat described as ‘fishing charter vessel’ operated at ‘unsafe speed’.

Janine Stanwood , Anchor/Reporter

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

LITTLE TORCH KEY, Fla. – A report from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigators released Friday suggests impairment may have played a role in an overnight boat crash in the Lower Florida Keys earlier in the week.

The crash happened at around 2 a.m. Monday at the South Pine Channel Bridge, off Little Torch Key.

In the report, FWC investigators said Lawrence L. Lewis, 42, of Big Pine Key, was operating the “fishing charter vessel” when he slammed into the bridge “at an unsafe speed.”

“Alcohol does appear to be a factor,” investigators wrote.

Investigators told Local 10 News on Friday that Lewis was believed to have been drinking throughout the whole trip and officials with the Monroe County State Attorney’s Office said his captain’s license had expired.

Investigators said they found tequila and beer cans and bottles amid the wreckage.

The seven passengers, ranging in age from 11 to 38, were all from northern Florida: Six were from Live Oak and another was from Lake City.

All eight people aboard were hurt in the crash; three had to be airlifted to Miami-area hospitals.

The boat’s outboard motors identified the vessel as belonging to charter company Nauti Tails Fishing Charters, which is based on Big Pine Key.

A woman who answered the phone at the business on Monday confirmed her husband was involved but said she wasn’t sure if the crash happened during a chartered trip or a family trip.

Eighteen-year-old passenger Waylon Poole, of Live Oak, briefly spoke to Local 10 News on Friday.

“We went fishing with a fishing captain and we hit a bridge,” he said. “It came out of nowhere.”

Officials have not yet confirmed whether Lewis will face any criminal charges in connection with the crash.

SAO officials said the officials conducted a blood draw on Lewis once he arrived at the hospital and those toxicology results remained pending as of Friday.

Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2024 has more entries every year

With super-smart teams battling it out on the water, and key players in the yachting industry to support them, the 11th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge , organized by Yacht Club de Monaco continues to drive positive change in alternative propulsion in yachting.

And as a vocal advocate for finding sustainable solutions in yachting HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco was in full support of the over 40 universities, 700 students involved all-year (450 attended the event that was held in early July), 25 nations and the 50-plus boats that gathered in in Monaco to show off the most sustainable ideas to propel the yachting industry into the 21 st century.

YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri (blue blazer left) and the Vita Power team show off the ... [+] club's high speed charging station at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2024

“This week is a very popular event judging by all the visitors here to see the innovations. An enthusiasm echoing that which animated the Principality at the first powerboat meetings,” says YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri. Supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, UBS, BMW and SBM Offshore, the event attracts renowned yachting players such as Monaco Marine, Oceanco, Ferretti Group, Azimut/ Benetti Group, Sanlorenzo and Lürssen.

It was non-stop ashore as at sea, a priority being exchange, including the Job Forum that this year saw 90 interviews held between young engineers and professionals and of course the daily Tech Talks held in open source.

Numerous classes compete at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2024

Support from the industry was evident in the Corporate Mentoring Program that encourages bespoke support for teams by professionals year-round, as happened to the French Hydrogadz and ENSTA Paris teams through the Monaco Marine University, and Elettra UniGe and UNIBOAT, two of five Italian teams taking part, supported by Sanlorenzo.

“It’s been fantastic to experience this event from the inside. We’ve been able to work closely with students, supporting them from a technical point of view. We opened doors to our shipyards, gave them access to workshops, and enabled them to do sea trials, a crucial step in validating their innovation,” explained Tanguy Ducros, CCO Monaco Marine.

Teams were also helping each other out on the docks with the Canadians on Exocet, the British of Cambridge University Riviera Racing, the Italians of UniGe and the Indonesians of Hydros Team UI exchanging equipment. After filling 30 bottles, so six kilos of hydrogen, made available to five teams, SBM Offshore did not hesitate to provide items from its autonomous green hydrogen pontoon, such as batteries and bottle connections to the Cambridge team.

Vita produces a commercially available 100% electric powered RIB

The technology unveiled was put to the test in a range of challenges at sea including a parade, sea trials, a fleet race, YCM E-Boat Rally, and the endurance, maneuverability and slalom events, and suffice to say the level has gone up several notches. Proof is there in the speed record when contestants are timed over a given distance, inspired by the kilometer-race rules of 1904. Unsurprisingly, the Open Sea Class topped the table of 33 participants with a new record set by Evoy’s Goldfish x9 which hit a top speed of 56 knots and averaged 48.6 knots, a big jump from last year’s 34.71 knots.

“In the past some countries had difficulty passing the technical inspection, yet today we see them with a hybridized hydrogen/ / battery they made themselves and an AI system to optimize their energy consumption,” says Jérémie Lagarrigue, President of the International Jury and CEO of EODev.

The iconic RIVA is available in a 100% electric powered version

Discussions also focused on alternatives such as methanol, promising because of its energy density and ease of storage. “Several criteria are relevant for alternative fuels such as energy density, safety, ease of handling, etc.,” notes Bernhard Urban, Head of Development and Innovation at Lürssen. “We need shipyards and technical partners, but also for owners and crews to be confident, for fuels to be available in ports, and authorities to be fast in defining the regulations,” added Paolo Bertetti, Vice-President Technical and R&D at Sanlorenzo.

The question of whether it’s possible to have nuclear reactors onboard was also discussed although differences remain as to how effective it is at the moment. In terms of sustainability, the SEA Index® presented a new method for calculating CO2 emissions suitable for bio-fuels, in partnership with RINA, aiming to better assess the environmental impact of chosen fuels.

Team spirit is a hallmark of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge

Ten teams took on the hydrogen challenge, a method of propulsion that took center stage at the 5th Hydrogen Round Table organized by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Energy Transition Mission and YCM. In the maritime sector the main factor slowing down development of this solution is the lack of green hydrogen as well as, crucially, refueling infrastructure problems, whether considering fuel cell technology or a hydrogen combustion engine, a proposition that looks increasingly relevant, particularly for refitting existing units.

Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2024 features cutting edge tech that will make a positive impact now ... [+] and in the future

The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge Champion 2024 title was awarded to the Greeks from Oceanos – NTUA that rewards the team that best demonstrates its technical qualities during the Tech Talks as well as its performances at sea during the on-water challenges.

The Italians from Physis (Politecnico Milano) received the coveted Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Sustainable Yachting Technology Award the prize being a grant of €25,000.

Four years later, I’m still learning, and I will keep doing so right up to the moment when I have to give it up. I’m in the Oregon Master Beekeeper Program . My six colonies all came through last winter. The book learning, observational learning and physical challenges of beekeeping invigorate my life — and regular inspections of my hives add a nice little frisson of danger. My husband and I, and a few neighbors, greatly enjoy the best honey we’ve ever had.

Diana Dickinson , Portland, Ore.

I was a literature major in college, but did poorly in poetry and ignored it all of my adult years. Just before the pandemic, I asked to tag along to a friend’s poetry group and immediately became hooked. Together, we’ve explored both traditional and modern poetry and come to love and feel at home in a variety of forms. Meeting online during the pandemic kept us all from being bored at home; now we meet in each other’s homes biweekly to spend two hours immersed in a new poet or style. This practice has constantly challenged our knowledge of history, literature, geography, science — you name it. And of course, we’ve all become close friends. Today I count poetry, along with the group that brought me to it, as one of the chief joys of my retirement years.

Jean Thayer , Arvada, Colo.

I’ve been a sailor most of my life, first on my father’s boats and later with power boats for my own kids. A few years back, I bought a classic cruising sailboat to use near our home on Buzzards Bay in Massachusetts. The bay isn’t known for calm water and is often a challenge in the afternoon. I hoped my wife would come to share my enthusiasm, but when that didn’t happen, I sailed solo for several years.

When you are sailing solo far from shore, one minor mistake can put you in serious hot water, which wouldn’t necessarily happen if there were a second set of hands on board, as my wife started to remind me around my 75th birthday. A fork was starting to appear in the road ahead.

I’m a pretty good carpenter, and wooden boats always held interest. I attended several classes at the WoodenBoat School in Maine and started to feel a major pull toward building. As I write this, a new 17-foot sailboat is under construction in my garage, and the cruiser’s new owners are hopefully making the same discoveries that delighted me a few years ago. My wife is relieved, despite the sawdust on her car. And I am using a new set of skills that otherwise would have gone to waste.

After my husband died about 10 years ago, I needed to do something that would occupy my mind and thoughts. So I started singing. I joined a local chorus and realized that most of the chorus members had sung in church or with other choruses. I had never sung with any group and needed help. I found a wonderful voice teacher, who has become my coach, cheerleader and wonderful friend.

But every year, she has required her students to do solos in front of a small group. This has terrified me for 10 years, but I am slowly becoming more confident, even though I always feel that I mess up.

Now I belong to two choruses, including a wonderful gospel group. I volunteer weekly to sing with a small group for dementia patients. They are so appreciative and nonjudgmental. Singing wonderful music has been challenging and stressful, but it has really enriched my life. Am I Barbra Streisand? No, but I am making progress!

Janet Feder , Mundelein, Ill.

I have made a career in music, as a musicologist, but only late in life turned to the instrument I have always loved, the flute. I was too afraid that sounding like a beginner would damage my credibility as a writer of music.

Finally, I took the plunge, and it has been both satisfying and humbling. Learning a new skill at my age is not the same as learning it as a child or young adult. After declining to play in a couple of recitals, I finally played for the first time in a recital in front of my colleagues, friends and students. Was I crazy exposing myself like that? The flute demands not only coordinated finger work but also great breath control and a loose throat, none of which my nerves allowed. Somehow I got through the piece, the Sarabande from Bach’s Partita in A Minor. I was disappointed and elated. I did not sound like I wanted to, but most important, I did it. And my friends, colleagues and students were all too kind; they were with me and supportive.

I continue to study. Will I ever get where I want to be? The pace is glacial, another product of starting late. But while it does remind you of the reality of your age, the slow progress and small victories also remind you that challenges can be overcome regardless of how old you are.

Michael Broyles , Tallahassee

As a freshman at City College of San Francisco in 1947, I signed up for architecture, interior decorating and art classes. During my first art class, which involved sketching furniture, the teacher told me to drop out and take a simpler class. I was embarrassed, to say the least. Later, my mother-in-law was an artist, followed by my two daughters, and I was intimidated to even think I could learn to paint a straight line.

But now, at age 94, I have become a true artist! A local art teacher is giving acrylic painting classes once a month, and I started eight months ago. I was so excited with the results of my first piece. My family provided me with supplies to paint for months. My second bedroom is now my studio.

Beverly A. Moglich , Bend, Ore.

When I was growing up in the late ’60s and early ’70s, my parents allowed me one after-school activity. I wanted to play the piano. But I did want to learn to paint, too. I loved going to art museums to gaze at the masterpieces by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Camille Pissarro, among others.

Time passed, and I was raising a family and working. There was little time for myself. Now that I am retired, I decided to take a big jump and to learn to paint. I found a class at my local community college, and I signed up. I was incredibly apprehensive. Was this a class for a beginner? Did I need some background knowledge? Would I be able to do this? Before the class began, I emailed the instructor, and she told me not to worry. As it turns out, my new hobby is bringing out my creativity. Plus, I find it calming. Best of all, I am having fun. I met lovely fellow artists, and I am learning from them, too. I will never become a great painter, but I’m having a blast trying!

Theresa Wiecezak , New Hyde Park, N.Y.

I’m a social worker and former singer, and I’ve always wanted to play piano like a concert pianist. However, I live with learning disabilities, and one of them, unfortunately, is that my left hand and my right hand don’t like each other. I’ve tried piano lessons various times in my life but only met with disappointment, failure and shame. As one piano teacher said to me, “You have such long fingers. Too bad you can’t play piano.”

However, as an octogenarian, I found a piano teacher who can deal with my obstacles. I, like David Bonior, was in a piano recital with a bunch of children who played much better than I did. But people can be nice to old ladies, and I was received with warmth by a gracious audience. I guess exposing one’s frailties in the right context can have some benefits.

Myrna Orenstein , Evanston, Ill.

I’ve been an active musician since high school, playing saxophones, flute and clarinet. My favorite setting is the jazz ensemble, and I currently play baritone sax in a local group. As I approached retirement in my government contractor job, I knew music would play an even larger role in my life.

At age 62, I studied a textbook on jazz ensemble arranging and started writing “charts.” Finally, I could stop complaining about deficiencies in other people’s charts and start writing my own, based on decades of experience. I’m now 69 and retired and have written nearly 30 charts, most of which have been published and performed. My lifetime goal is at least 100 charts. One of the beneficial side effects is that the mental discipline of writing music makes me a better player on all of my instruments. As legendary cellist Pablo Casals is said to have remarked when asked why he still practiced daily at age 80: I think I’m making progress.

The Holder 12 is very stable, very good sailing boat, and easy to sail but no match for speed for the Laser or the Force 5. The Force 5 is better for larger sailors as it has, if I remember correctly 92 sq. ft. of sail area as compared to 76 (again only by memory) for the laser. The Laser is PLENTY powerful enough when the breeze picks up.

  8. Review of Holder 12
