The worlds of the desert festival, Burning Man, and superyachting may not seem like a natural fit, but the owners and designers of 184-foot Galaxy successfully made those worlds collide—and, in the process, showed how yacht design can be a lot more creative, and fast.

The five-month refit of Galaxy —a 2005 Benetti —was not only unusually speedy for a superyacht, but signals the emergence of a new kind of yachting, a clean-slate design that gave the owners the fantasyland interior that they wanted. Typically, most interior refits involve only cosmetic changes, and from the exterior, Galaxy looks almost painfully cookie-cutter. But inside, the bold, bespoke look may inspire others to follow their wildest dreams, rather than staying safe with a conventional design.

Njord by Bergman Design House created the eclectic interior. The refit was done by Monaco Marine and GM Group at the La Ciotat yard in France. “ Galaxy isn’t just another white superyacht on the French Riviera,” says Sarah Colbon, co-founder of the London-based design firm. “The yacht is its own out-of-world destination that touches all your senses and excites and embraces you with its energy.”

Burning Man is an annual gathering that takes place in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. It’s a mix of art, music and free expression that embraces individual creativity, no matter what that looks like. And it can look pretty wild. At the end of the festival is the ritual burning of “The Man,” a tall effigy made of wood. Galaxy ‘s owners, a leading American video-games developer and his partner, are frequent attendees. They were inspired by the festival and a love of entertaining, says Colbon, to create an “alternate universe.”

The expansive main deck has been transformed into a giant “floating private member’s club,” with bespoke décor and alternatively moody and brightly colored artwork. “The Thinker” by contemporary artist Joseph Klibansky reimagines Rodin’s classic sculpture as an astronaut, and there are also paintings by Camille Hannah and wall coverings by digital artist Dylan Cole, known for Disney’s Avatar and Maleficent .

The wallpaper is Cole’s first static project. “He’s never done this before, but he appreciated the concept of Galaxy and loved the sound of the owners,” says Colbon. “So he agreed to create the owners’ own Avatar world onboard.” If you look closely, you’ll spot secret creatures and “ET” aliens hidden in the otherworldly scenes that Cole created.

While the main deck is a nightclub that would look right at home on some alien world, the upper deck is designed for the opposite effect. It features a lounge and dining space for 12 guests which is “super calm,” according to the designer.

“What’s wonderful about Galaxy is you can switch it on and off,” says Colbon. “You can go from the ultimate club space with RGB lighting, party vibes and a DJ stand, to the serene upper deck where you can connect with your senses.”

When they’re done for the day, guests can retire to suites which have been named and styled after other planets. “We’ve designed Venus and Saturn with beautiful light pearls and golds, while Mars has these striking earthy red tones,” says Colbon. “Rather than being gimmicky, we’ve respected the colors and sensibilities of the planets.”

The master suite is even more bespoke: The bed’s headboard is designed with a metal bronze effect with tiny LED lights that create a star-gazing platform. The owners’ star signs also come through as the brighter lights, while their friends’ star signs are dimmer lights. On the ceiling is the owners’ favorite constellation.

The centerpieces of the yacht are the stairwell and elevator areas, hand-painted with an ombre, galaxy-toned effect.

Galaxy is filled with special features, including adjustable RGB lighting and smart materials like a specially engineered flooring. Colbon says that’s a world first for a superyacht. “The tight ripple effect stimulates the nerve endings on your feet when you walk on it and triggers endorphins to make you super relaxed,” she says. “It also looks like the ocean with tiny waves crashing on top of each other.”

The crew thought it was crazy to use this surface as flooring, says Colbon. “But they understand now.”

The five-month turnaround also seemed like a stretch, especially since it included a full exterior paint job, new name plates and a spa. And then there was the fantastical interior.

“This yacht shows how design can be done differently in every way,” says Colbon. “It ranges from a new type of owner to the ways that collaborations between the designers and yard can actually change the whole refit process. I think Galaxy is going to really shine.”

Motor Yacht

Motor yacht Galaxy is a smart and sleek luxury superyacht built in 2005 by Italian shipyard Benetti. With a steel hull designed in-house and aluminium superstructure, she features exterior design and interior layout by Stefano Natucci. This attractive vessel measures 56 metres and can accommodate up to 12 guests. The actual interior decoration was completed by the owner’s personal designer who has also completed projects in his Melbourne and Los Angeles homes.

Galaxy is the very first superyacht to be produced by Benetti’s new shipyard Livorno and was specifically designed to accommodate the Australian owner’s family but is also available for selective charter. One of her defining design features is the use of exotic woods in her interior stylings, using oak, eucalyptus, sycamore, ash, pear, and Burma teak parquet to furnish her interior.

The luxury motor yacht received her name from Valentina Tei, the daughter of Roberto Tei, the longest-serving worker of Benetti’s newly re-christened custom yacht complex. The vessel is both Lloyd’s and MCA classified and is powered by twin 1,850 horsepower Caterpillars.

Passengers board the motor yacht by a hydraulically-activated ladder on starboard to the generous aft deck where a large built-in sofa dominates the area. Her Flying Bridge, the design of the owner, is arguably one of the yacht’s greatest features which aside from a Sun deck with five sunning lounges includes a bar area, dining and snack table serviced by dumbwaiter and all this is convertible into a helipad.

The dining table is generous enough to seat 12 at once and is situated under the permanent Bimini Sat-Nav top. From here, guests have direct access to the extensive gym and teak plank-line Jacuzzi whirlpool protected by Plexiglas wind screens.

Featuring a dedicated crew and a wide range of onboard facilities and water toys, Galaxy is also an excellent charter yacht. The luxury yacht cruises comfortably at 14 knots while a crew of 13 ensures the needs of charter guests are met.

Amongst her six cabins are two double staterooms and two twin cabins on the lower deck; a VIP stateroom on the upper deck; and luxury owner’s suite on the main deck with en suite Jacuzzi and VIP office. The owner’s suite is split over two levels, the main deck offering an office, and his and hers baths and dressing areas. The owner’s salon is forward and raised half a deck.

Boasting a full range of exciting entertainment options, Galaxy features a wine cellar, gym, Jacuzzi, and an all-level elevator among her extensive list of amenities. You will also find onboard an upper deck Sky Lounge with 180-degree views, gaming tables and bar, and an indoor cinema.

The luxury motor yacht is equipped with an entire armada of water toys to provide endless hours of entertainment during any yacht charter. Water toys sail boats, kayaks, a windsurfer, wave runners, skis, and snorkel gear. For entertainment back on the yacht deck, Galaxy carries Satellite TV, and a book, DVD and CD library.

The yacht sails the Mediterranean, both East and West in the summer months.

One UI 6.1 is rolling out for Samsung’s 2023 flagship phones

• One UI 6.1 brings Galaxy AI features to premium 2023 Galaxy phones, including real-time call translation and generative photo editing.
• Update already live for Galaxy S23, Fold 5 on Verizon network in US, with Unlocked variants and Tab S9 series getting it soon.
• Check for update in Settings to access new AI features and battery options, enhancing user experience on latest Samsung devices.

Samsung has been teasing the release of One UI 6.1 for its 2023 flagships for a while now. The skin launched with the Galaxy S24 series in late January, marking the debut of Galaxy AI, packing useful features like real-time phone call translation, generative photo editing, and more. Earlier this week, Samsung confirmed the Galaxy S23, Fold 5, Flip 5, and the Tab S9 series will get One UI 6.1 starting March 28th. Right on schedule, the firmware has gone live for the Galaxy S23 and Fold 5 in Europe, the US, and other parts of the world.

What is Galaxy AI, what can it do, and how can I use it?

Multiple Galaxy S23 owners on Reddit report getting the massive 3GB CXCF firmware for download on their phones. Impressively, the update is also already live for the Galaxy S23 FE , at least in the UK. In the US, One UI 6.1 is available for download on Verizon's network on the Galaxy S23. At the moment, the update is not live on other US carriers, but that should change sooner rather than later.

The Fold 5's One UI 6.1 build is also live on Verizon's network (via Reddit ) in the US alongside regions like Poland and parts of Europe.

Unlocked variants of Samsung's 2023 flagship phone or foldable might only get the update in early April as per Samsung's announcement earlier this week. Similarly, the firmware for the cellular variants of the Galaxy Tab S9 series will land next month.

You can check if the One UI 6.1 update is live on your Galaxy S23, Fold 5, Flip 5, or Tab S9 series from Settings > Software update > Download and install .

One UI 6.1 is all about Galaxy AI

The biggest highlight of One UI 6.1 is the addition of Galaxy AI features to premium Galaxy phones of 2023. Surprisingly, the Korean giant is bringing almost all the AI features of the S24 to them. This includes Circle to Search , allowing you to search for anything on your phone's screen quickly. Google has recently improved the feature with translation support as well.

With Live Translate, Galaxy S23 and Fold/Flip owners can enjoy live two-way translation of phone calls in real time. There's also Generative Edit, which allows you to resize or fill in a background in a picture after taking the shot. Instant Slow-Mo uses generative AI to play regular videos in slow motion. Due to hardware limitations, this feature is not available on the Galaxy S23 FE.

Besides the AI features, One UI 6.1 introduces new battery longevity options and minor usability improvements.

Suspected seafaring bandits terrorizing San Francisco Bay residents are now landlocked in jail cells.

Three suspected maritime burglars accused of breaking into a business on Embarcadero, San Francisco’s iconic east-facing waterfront, were arrested in the Oakland-Alameda Estuary on March 28, Oakland police said.

It’s a major step forward for residents living in houseboats and yachts on the 800-foot-wide waterway, which endured almost a year of theft and physical confrontations with the so-called “East Bay Pirates.” 

Starting last summer, vagrants – believed to be from Oakland’s homeless encampments – used small boats to raid the large ships and steal valuables. Homeowners fought back and chased would-be thieves across San Francisco Bay.

The suspects, who weren’t named, allegedly broke into a business on March 13. They were spotted on surveillance video in the estuary.

Law enforcement executed search warrants on the small boats and found the stolen property, according to Oakland police, which sent the case to the Alameda County District Attorney for charges.

The DA’s office didn’t immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s follow-up questions. 

The Oakland-Alameda Estuary separates the two cities and includes multiple marinas with about 3,000 boat slips, where a community lives on houseboats and yachts.

Last summer and fall, maritime burglars used small, stolen, or discarded boats to ransack large vessels and steal anything they could get their hands on. 

Then they would either sink the ships or dump whatever was left of the boats miles away in Oakland Harbor or along its shorelines.

Several residents in the area shared personal anecdotes about the dire situation in several municipal meetings last year, including the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s (BCDC) enforcement meeting.

“The open shoreline of the (Oakland-Alameda) estuary is littered with sunken wrecks and derelict, end-of-life vessels, and crime has risen to truly intolerable levels,” former harbormaster Brock de Lappe said during an October BCDC meeting. 

“Multiple vessels have been stolen and ransacked. Victims have had to resort to personally confronting the criminals to recover their property without the benefit of police support. Is this an appropriate activity for a 79-year-old senior?”

One woman said she rescued a man whose sailboat drifted into the bay without a motor or any way to get back to shore after one of the “pirates” cut his boat line during an argument.

Other residents told Fox News Digital they chased would-be thieves across the bay, and they shared videos of the chase and surveillance footage. 

Dan Hill, who was one of the leaders in the area to bring the issue to the forefront, was one of dozens or more pounding the tables at municipal meetings, writing letters, and calling officials to address the problem. 

Each “attack” and theft can cost the owner thousands to tens of thousands of dollars, Hill told Fox News Digital in a previous interview.

Over the weekend, he said the situation appeared to have been “cleaned up pretty good” and praised the arrests. 

For months, jurisdiction question marks and eroding law enforcement staffing levels complicated the issue, but the Oakland and Alameda police departments worked together and teamed up with the Coast Guard, which has a base in the estuary.

Alameda Police Chief Nishant Joshi called it a “regional approach” to protect the waterway during an October 2023 interview with Fox News Digital . 

“In the waterways, it’s very difficult to draw a line,” Joshi said at the time. “There are no roadways or fence lines, so we all have a shared interest, much like crime as a whole, to deal with this as a regional approach.”

Joshi’s comments were echoed by the Coast Guard spokesperson, who said, “It’s a federal and state problem, and we’re all working to protect the best interests of everyone in the estuary.”

As for this particular case involving the suspected business burglars, Oakland police said the case and ongoing thefts in and around the Oakland estuary are still under investigation.
