“Sailing Today” had a very good review of the Maxi 95 in Dec 2002 (Issue 68, pages 56-63) “… an ideal balance between performance and cruising accomodation at an attractive price” See our LINKS section for specific links to other Maxi 95 sites. Please note that some of these sites have moved from their original locations or rebuilt their sites. Hence they may have lost some worthwhile historical information, so it is worth contacting the site owners to see if they can help! Please don’t forget to let us know of updates!

Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Maxi 95
Basic specs..
The Maxi 95 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.
The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.
The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.50 - 1.60 meter (4.92 - 5.22 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
Maxi 95 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD11C diesel engine at 23.0 hp (17 kW), which gives a max speed about 5.6 knots.
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?
The capsize screening value for Maxi 95 is 1.93, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.
What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?
The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Maxi 95 is about 167 kg/cm, alternatively 936 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 167 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 936 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
Sailing statistics
This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance
When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 27m 2 (290 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Hi guys, I am looking forward to buy a Maxi 95, which is a Swedish boat built in 1980. Designed by Pelle Peterson, it looks pretty nice and roomy. Is there anyone came across this model? Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jacky
Jacky, don''t take this as a ''No'' vote on the Maxi specifically...but the generic category is one that some of us just don''t think makes much sense. Shorter hull, teeny aft cabin, cockpit more forward and closer to the bow wave, and with a main cabin squished into a smaller area as a result. The design theme was meant to suggest privacy and spaciousness when neither can reasonably be delivered in that form factor. And what functions is that aft cabin to serve, except to sleep in? Wouldn''t that space being utilized at other times by the whole crew in the main cabin be more suitable? Peterson earned some notariety from his America''s Cup design back then and Maxi tried to use it to their marketing advantage. They sell his designs to this day, tho'' in a much smaller market. But the fit-out of the boat was neither suited to racing nor cruising, it always seemed to me (e.g. quite small tankage). However, it does have that Swedish cache'' and, if it seems to meet your needs, then my impressions are irrelevant to you. Good luck on the search! Jack
Hi, I have been sailing my Maxi 95 for 15 years now. Time to buy something bigger maybe... For the right price, I would maybe consider selling this fine boat (in very good shape)... What price did you have in mind? regards, Filip

The first boat that I thought of is the Red Fox - would she be sufficiently 'Jonesey'? (She was designed by David Thomas) SailboatData.com - RED FOX 200 Sailboat Here is an old (2002!) No I like the look of the Nomad but Stephen Jones could probably work wonders with some airfoil leadkeels and a properrudder instead of a plate steel one!

The best small boat I had was a Westerly Cirrus. Designed by John Butler (I think), it was 22' with a fin keel of 3' 6", and handled like a 30-footer. It would outsail a Galleon 22 or a Hurley 22 and if the children hadn't outgrown the saloon table we'd have kept it for much longer than two years. With a 10hp Volvo, it could have taken us anywhere, but at least we learned a lot.

I had a Westerly Tiger, the larger brother to the Cirrus at 25'. An excellent sailing boat and excellent accomodation for the length.

My favourite (bought once in my 20s and again as a bit of fun on our 40ths) is the Westerly GK24. Sails beautifully and quickly - easily beating much larger boats and has a perfect flat working platform with no raised cabin top or side decks. Ours had an inboard engine which I much preferred to an outboard. The downside is a very low cabin - plenty of places you can sit up comfortably against a back rest but moving around you are very bent over. You get used to it very quickly. Double Vee berth forward slightly bigger than the 31 footer we got later. Separate hanging locker on one side and sea loo on the other between saloon and forecabin. Very wide saloon for a 24 footer round a table, and two dry and secure pilot berths (though we tended to use one as storage and have a Lee cloth on one of the settee berths). Loved it and over the years we sailed it between Lowestoft and La Rochelle, but mostly in the West Country. Sad to give it up 18 months ago but realised I was flying out to our bigger boat whenever I had spare time, so it was all routine maintenance for very little sailing.

The Kingfishers were designed by an aircraft engineer R Neirop(spelling) He was into solving structural problems with the new material, grp but the basic yacht design left much to be desired,if he could have worked with a n architect might of been better, probably his best boat was the 26 footer.

Six people presumed dead after Baltimore Key Bridge collapses, Coast Guard says
A major bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being hit by a freighter about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water as a large section of the bridge crashed into the Patapsco River. Six people were presumed dead Tuesday evening, authorities announced as they shifted from a search and rescue operation to a recovery effort. The container ship lost power moments before it struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said at a news conference.

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
