Micro Magic USA

Welcome to the official site for micro magic r/c boats and sailing in the us.

The Micro Magic is a small remote controlled sailing boat with outstanding sailing characteristics from almost zero wind to winds well over 20 knots. The Micro Magic is very much an international RC sailboat racing class with fleets in many countries.

Micro Magics were initially developed and distributed exclusively by Graupner, Germany. Graupner ceased production of our boats in 2019. Happily, Hacker Model Production of the Czech Republic resumed production of Micro Magics in late 2020, and we are happy to report that the new boats are of extremely high quality.

You are on the official website of The US Micro Magic Class Owners Association. We are part of both the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA) and the international Micro Magic association, Micro Magic International (MMI).

Our website provides information about class news, class information, existing US fleets, upcoming events, tech (building and maintenance), tuning, suppliers, and provides views of photos and videos.

Why the New Website?

As many of you know, for many years the US Micro Magic Class Owners Association had a perfectly usable website located at usa.micromagic.org.

That website was located on a server with a number of other countries’ MM websites. In 2016 one of the other MM websites was severely hacked, and the server owner very appropriately chose to shut the entire server down, and as a result we lost our old website.

We decided to follow Mike Eades’ suggestion: Mike is a two-time US MM national champion and also the Class Secretary of the Seawind class. He suggested that we copy their set-up: a new read-only informational website on Google Sites.

This turned out to be a great idea: Google Sites is easy to use, and it is very easy to edit posts and add new stuff. It looks just fine on full-sized screens, tablets, and smartphones. And being read-only and administered by Google, security concerns are markedly decreased. Similarly, separating the informational website from the forums greatly improves the security of the website.

THE AMYA

Micro Magic Class

description.

RC Sailboats

An overview of radio controlled sail boats and a brief explanation of scale model sailboats, semi scale rc sport, and rc racing sailing yachts. kits, rtr and scratch built..

RC sailboats can be divided up in three main categories:

  • RC Sport Sail
  • RC Sailing Yachts (for racing)
  • RC Scale Sail

RC sport sail

Most kits and RTR (ready-to-run) model RC sail boats are best categorized as RC sport scale. This category is a happy medium between full-blown scale models and RC racing yachts.

Some have become so widely distributed that new racing classes has been formed around them. Good examples are Graupner's Micro Magic and Kyosho's Fairwind.

They are usually semi-scale of modern cruising yachts or made to resemble America’s cup sailboats.

The lower cost models come with ABS hulls, whereas the higher end models come with more durable fiberglass hulls. Drop keels, aluminum masts and Dacron sails are most common.

RC racing yachts

If you want to get into RC yacht racing there are a number of classes to choose from. Each country has a governing body ( American Model Yachting Association (AMYA) in the USA, Model Yachting Association in the UK) under the International Model Yacht Racing Union.

As with full size regattas, RC model yacht racing face some of the same issues. Entry rules for competitions typically follow depending on if the class is Open or Closed Design.

Open or Construction Class

What these classes have in common is that the boats are not identical - instead the rules are made up like a mathematical formula. The good thing that brings is that the challenge is three-fold – design, construction and sailing the course.

The disadvantage is in that the rules for some classes can be complicated. Some classes have gained in popularity precisely because the rules fro previously established classes were so hard to understand.

Examples of some popular open design model yacht classes:

  • 6 Metre - M6R
  • 10 rater – R10r
  • 36" (36-inch)

Closed Design or One-design Class

All entries have to be the same design. Some are kits from a single manufacturer others are open to home built model boats.

  • Micro Magic - Graupner
  • Fairwind - Kyosho

RC scale sail

We're talking about scale model sail boats that actually use its sails as the main means of propulsion. RC scale sail is called minisail in continental Europe. The vast majority of sailing scale model boats is scratch built. There are a few kits - Billings Collin Archer RS-1 comes to mind.

The prevailing problem with scaling a sailboat is that stability doesn’t scale linearly with size. The result is that model boats will always be significantly less stable than the boat or ship it was modeled after. Left as is, it may have detrimental effects on the model’s sea keeping abilities. There are ways to minimize the effect.

A smallish boat built to a large scale is more stable than a large ship to a small scale. For instance, say you can only transport a model 1m long. Building a model of an 8m cruising yacht at 1:8 scale will be more stable than a model of the USS Constitution at 1:48 scale. This is true even if they end up weighing the same and being the same length. I bet the yacht will be a much better sailer too.

Bigger is always better too, when it comes to scale RC sailboats. Try and build the biggest model you can get away with. A larger model will be more forgiving on construction techniques, materials and the weight of components. The finished model will also be faster, a better sailer and handle stronger winds than if it was built smaller.

Making considerable effort to build light is always a god habit. The higher up a part or component is located, the more important this becomes. For instance, rigging components need to be light weight.

Other factors are beam and draft (width and depth for landlubbers). A wider and deeper hull will naturally be more stable than thin and shallow.

There are two tricks to increase the stability of model boats artificially:

Add a drop keel

By adding a drop keel you can bring the center of gravity down while adding profile area. The greater under-water profile helps against drifting sideways. All sailboats drift downwind some, because the surface water moves with the wind. The lower boundary-layers of a body of water are influenced less by the wind than layers closer to the surface. Therefore, the deeper any extension of the hull is, the less drift.

Typically a boat with a drop-keel also needs a larger rudder. A good guideline is to make the rudder area 10-12% of the total submerged hull profile.

Extent the hull below the waterline

Some builders rather build the boat hull slightly out of scale than add a drop keel. The most bang-for-the-buck is to deepen the hull. Same rule apply about the rudder (rudder area = 10-12% of total submerged profile). You could technically make the hull wider, but the effect is not as great.

Any change in the submerged hull profile need to maintain the same geometric center to balance the center of effort on the sails. Naturally, if you know what you are doing, the sail and rig can be modified also.

A Final Word on Scale RC Sailboats

Generally stay away from lateen rigs, multi-hull, centerboard designs and square riggers, at least until you have become an experienced RC sailboats captain and/or builder.

DESIGN RULES

Designed specifically for racing, the sleek 21″ sloop rigged Micro Magic features molded ABS plastic hull and deck, carbon mast and booms, adjustable keel, and ready-made ICAREX single panel sails with carbon battens.  While technically a one-design sailboat, the  Micro Magic does afford the builder some discretion. The placement of the two allowed servos is unrestricted. The size of the sails (up to a maximum size) is likewise unspecified and after-market sails are permitted. The hull and deck may not be modified, and manufacturer’s  parts must be used for keel, bulb and rudder.

NOTE: Graupner, the original manufacturer of the Micro Magic, was recently sold and the production of  Micro Magics suspended while the company is relocated. Production by the new owners, Graupner/SJ, has resumed and is available online through shop.graupner.de . While some features of the Micro Magic have been slightly modified, and may   improve performance, the design rules will not be changed. The new Micro Magic will be offered in kit form and as a ready to run model sailboat.

MMB2

There are two sets of design rules for the Micro Magic: German design rules that favor continued experimentation and development of the Micro Magic design, and a more structured one-design approach adopted in the Netherlands and now used worldwide. The Dutch rules have been adopted by the multinational Micro Magic Class, Micro Magic International ,  and are available at the Class web site as International Class Rules . The US Micro Magic Class , established in 2008, uses the multinational rules, and offers its members plans, tips, and construction and sailing resources at its web site.

The US Micro Magic Class Secretary is Martin Gray. The Micro Magic Registration Form is available at the US Micro Magic Class Page.

MMH

PeterB’s Micro Magic Racing Yacht web site (created by a Micro Magic builder / sailor) provides a Micro Magic MKII “Parts List with Pictures” and “Step by Step Instructions ” with photos for assembling the Racing Micro Magic MKII.

Expertise in building and sailing the Micro Magic is available from both sides of the pond at two onine forums (registration is required to post comments): USA Micro Magic Class Owners Association Forum , and the forum hosted at the Micro Magic International Class web site.

Members of the Micro Magic R/C Sailboat Class maintain a Facebook “ Micro Magic USA ” Group.

The AMYA Model Yachting magazine featured the Micro Magic in its Winter 2010 issue available from the AMYA Ship’s Store . Included are nine articles addressing Micro Magic design, construction, sail options, tuning and US fleet activity.

FAQs About RC Sailboats

If you do not see your question, or an answer to it, listed below, get in touch with us and we’ll happily give you one!

How do RC Sailboats work?

RC Sailboats work through radio control, which is a given considering the “RC” in the name, and a bit of skill. You need to steer, draw the sail, etc. Interestingly enough, it’s a lot like sailing a real sailboat, but you’re using a controller to do it.

This is where the skill part comes in. Drawing the sails, for example, requires timing and precision to ensure that you’re doing it properly. If you don’t, you face it sinking, should the model be a very extensive one, or not sailing properly at all.

the-best-rc-sailboat

Where can I race a RC Sailboat?

You can race a RC Sailboat virtually anywhere. Although, racing in the ocean may not be the best idea if you’re very invested, both emotionally and financially, in your boat.

This is where lines come in. A lot of users will have a line system to ensure that if there is a crash and their boat sinks, or whatever the case may be, they can still retrieve their vessel without actually having to go into the water.

Are there are RC Sailboats that use wind?

Yes! Some RC Sailboats do not use electricity or a motor as a source to run. Some only work with windy weather, but still require a controller for steering, drawing the sails, etc.

What happens when the wind stops?

This is another instance where a tow line comes in handy. If the wind stops you have two options – wait for it to come back, or use your tow line to reel it back in. Some users have small tugboats that are able to go out and retrieve a RC Sailboat that has a downed sail, has stalled, etc.

What if it tips?

If your RC Sailboats tips, it’s obviously not a very good one. The good quality ones have something at the bottom to ensure this doesn’t happen unless it’s hit by another one, has a hole in the side, etc.

It may tip into the water from the wind or have the bow go under water, but it should not tip on its side completely in any instance other than one of the reasons previously mentioned.

If it does tip, reel it in using your tow line or go into the water and get it.

I would definitely go for K2 – manufactured by Sailboat RC company. That 1-metre hull beast won World AND European Championship, USA Nationals, Southern America Cup, Australian Nats…and all in 2017/2018 season!!

Check it out, it is outstanding piece of art really, a must have RC Sailboat.

I am looking for 1 mtr fibreglass remote controlled sailing boat preferably European or american. Thanks Annette

' src=

Hej! Have you found something? I search for a rc sailboat that I can transport with my bicicle.

' src=

Hi Annette, I too am looking for a 1 meter or 3 foot sailboat. Had a “Tradewinds” that was 3 feet long and loved it! BUT, the 5 pound center board weight (I used BB’s) was hard to find…. Want to get one so it can be sailed in the pond/small lake outside. A friend got one too and we used to “race”. But, we had no buoys – there are usually two or three and depends on the size of the boat.

In the Chicago area, Wisconsin, Chicago, Indiana (Munster), Michigan, and Florida (about 20 miles from Orlando) – we were lucky and I was sailing anywhere from 13′ to 45′ boats. People that did not know me were freaked out when I could sail.

Another boat makes sense here. And, if I had two, then another person can sail too. And, I can make buoys that are needed to race boats. Hmm, that is a good idea.

I am a former professional licensed Captain, sailboat dealer and racer who is now landlocked. Looking to start RC sailing, but prefer to identify key class associations, publications and such information to make sure there is a strong RC class or one design to guide me. Looking forward to guidance first, then back on the water the right way.

My 18-year-old sails 420s and Lasers competitively, and is now asking for a r/c sailboat for Christmas. He has never used one before, but thinks the idea sounds fun. He is engineer-minded, grew up rigging and racing. We live on a bay off the ocean. Can anyone recommend a r/c sailboat $300 or less?

I am sourcing an RC catamaran (3’+-) and would like suggestions. Thx.

Radio control boats compared to other RC models

With hobby-quality radio control boats, sometimes referred to as remote control boats, you can do most of the same things that you can do with RC cars. You can run them for fun, race them, admire their scale looks, and add option parts to increase their performance.

The main difference is that you don’t run your RC boat on land. That’s what makes them so popular and exciting. Picture yourself at the lake on a sunny afternoon, racing your remote control boat through the shimmering water with a broad wake and tall rooster tail behind it. Or maybe you'd prefer to gently glide along with a remote control sailboat. There’s nothing else in the RC hobby like it.

The only special requirement is that you need a body of water large enough for the RC marine model you own, without strong currents and relatively free of limbs, grasses, and other obstacles that could snag it. If your RC boat does get stuck away from shore or runs out of power in the middle of the lake, you may need access to a jon boat or other safe way to retrieve it.

Otherwise, piloting your own RC boat is as easy as driving an RC car. And just like RC cars, radio control boats are available in a wide range of styles, sizes, skill levels, completion levels, and prices. Horizon Hobby® has one that’s perfect for every interested hobbyist.

Types of RC boats

Radio control electric boats are available in many styles. Tunnel hull and hydroplane RC boats are among the fastest, with flat bottoms that skim across smooth water with little resistance when up to speed. For rougher conditions, the V-shaped hull of deep vee RC boats is best. Though not quite as fast, a deep vee can cut more easily through choppy water. Electric RC boats come in many sizes, including mini, which can be run in swimming pools or small ponds. The jet pump propelled Pro Boat® Jet Jam™ mini RC boat is a blast in water only three inches deep!

Powered by wind like their full-size counterparts, RC sailboats are great for beginners and economical, too. They provided unlimited run time as long as there’s a breeze. You might think of sailboats as elegant and leisurely paced, but there are also RC racing sailboats for modelers who crave speed.

Scale RC boats prioritize realism over speed. They still perform well, but their owners pay close attention to recreating the full-scale subjects accurately. The Dumas® Creole Queen scale steamboat kit features a motor-powered paddle wheel and includes three pages of decals.

RC airplane pilots can make an easy transition into boating with an RC airboat. These use the same power plants and propellers as RC aircraft. The engine mounts on a pedestal at the back of the boat and the force of the spinning prop pushes the boat across the water.

Remote control boats in kit form or ready-to-run (RTR

Like other categories of radio control models, RC boats can be purchased ready-to-run (RTR) with most or all accessories included, or as kits that usually require assembly, power systems, and radio equipment.

Many ready-to-run RC boat models have molded ABS plastic hulls and decks that are already joined at the factory. The motor and running hardware are usually also installed. RC boats with ABS hulls tend to be among the most affordable, but speed and performance are still impressive. With optional accessories, the Pro Boat Blackjack™ [link https://www.horizonhobby.com/product/blackjack-42-8s-brushless-catamaran-rtr/PRB08043.html] with ABS hull can go 30 mph or more.

Factory-built RC boats are also available with preformed fiberglass hulls. Fiberglass boats are more expensive due to the amount of work required by the manufacturer (the reinforcing fiberglass material must be saturated with a liquid resin and then applied to the boat hull mold). This construction is usually found on high-performance RC boats like the Pro Boat UL-19 Hydroplane , whose speed can exceed 50 mph.

Scale RC boat kits often feature wooden hulls. Though among the least expensive boat models, wooden boat kits also require the most work to complete. Many wood planks must be fitted onto the hull framework and then finished with paint or resin to ensure the hull is watertight.

The RC boat you choose will determine what else you’ll need to buy. Most ready-to-run (RTR) RC boats available from Horizon Hobby include a 2-channel radio system, motor, and ESC. You might need to provide your own suitable battery pack and battery charger. Read the product descriptions to learn what is and is not included with the RC boat you’ve chosen, and for recommended completion items.

You’ll find that the internal design of a typical electric RC boat is pretty simple. The motor is located near the front of the boat. It’s connected to a drive shaft that runs toward the back of the boat and out through the bottom of the hull. The boat’s propeller is at the end of the shaft, submerged in the water. A servo-activated rudder positioned just behind the propeller enables you to steer.

RC boats often use water cooling to keep their motor and ESC from overheating. These components are wrapped with coils of aluminum tubing, and the coils are connected to a water pickup at the bottom of the hull. As the boat moves forward, water is forced into the pickup and through the coils to provide cooling.

The electronics used in RC boats are highly water-resistant, but the boat manufacturer may recommend additional steps to seal out water for additional protection. You should also be aware that most remote control boats should not be used in saltwater. Unlike freshwater, saltwater can cause rust and other damage to delicate electronic parts.

Check out all of the great RC boats available at Horizon Hobby as well as our wide selection of boat accessory items and replacement parts from Pro Boat , Spektrum™ and Dynamite®.

Description

The modern design of the hull, keel, rudder and rig endow the boat with high-performance sailing characteristics in light to moderate winds combined with simple handling. The boat´s compact size solves all manner of transport problems. Although the model is within most people´s modelling budgets and is very easy to build, MICRO MAGIC is quite capable of providing “real” sailing fun for young and old, beginner and advanced skipper alike.

The model can be assembled from the kit in a very short time and requires only a few tools to complete. All the vacuum-moulded ABS parts are supplied CNC-trimmed to final size. The sails in the kit are ready-made and sewn in ultra-light sail fabric, and are available in the colours red, blue and fluorescent yellow. The removable keel consists of a profiled glassfibre-reinforced keel fin and low-set ballast weight. The keel and the lightweight aluminium mast fit in a strong keel/mast socket which is an integral part of the hull. Moulded-in recesses in the hull and deck shell dictate the correct position of the socket, so perfect alignment is automatic.

The RC system components are also mounted on the socket and can be removed at any time, and maintenance is easy through the relatively large access opening. The simplest of RC systems is sufficient to control the model. Adding one low-cost standard servo provides full control of the sails in addition to the rudder. This enables the skipper to steer the boat on all possible courses, and extract maximum performance from the model.

Unique vessels as model building kits!

Find models that you cannot get elsewhere - especially at such a small scale. All models assemble much like a plastic kit, they are 3D-printed on demand for your order. Each kit comes with a detailed set of instructions, both for the assembly and painting and for all additional functionality.

Highly detailed in small scale!

Details are printed down to half a millimeter's size - adding great details to small boats. All models are primarily designed in 1:200 scale, but various other sizes are available, too, or can be made available on request where possible.

micro rc sailboat

Fully functional and radio-controlled!

All models are set up for radio-control (RC) for a minimum of the main propulsion system and steering. The models use standard components that are commercially available. Unfortunately, ready-to-run (RTR) models are not available at this point.

Functions and more functions!

Most models also cater to the needs of the advanced modeler, with working bow and stern thrusters, azimuth thrusters or pump-jets at 1:200 scale. Besides, winches, radar systems, fire monitors, tow pins or cranes are prepared to be made to work!

micro rc sailboat

This is how it works!

If you are interested in a part or a model, you can place your order throught the Shapeways market place. Your parts are individually printed and quality checked based on your order. Shipping is available world-wide, and depending on your location, parts will be at your address in 3 to 4 weeks. Shapeways also handles the payment, and all common means of payment (e.g. credit card or PayPal) are possible.

For a better idea of what you get, have a look at the unboxing video.

What else do I need?

Besides the printed parts, you will typically need the propulsion and RC components to make the model work. For each model, a manual is available in the download section, and it lists all parts that are recommended to complete the model.

To assemble and paint the model, you can use basic acryllic colors, e.g. Humbrol, Revell or Tamiya. The manuals have recommendations for paints. The same applies if you want to refine your model with photo-etched handrails or ladders.

micro rc sailboat

I have my own printer!

If you are interested to print the models yourself, you can find the basic hulls as editable files in the download section. The other files are - at this point - not available.

Interested?

All model kits are available through Shapeways, an online market platform dedicated to high-quality 3D-printed parts. Have a look at the "how to order" overview or the download page for the assembly manuals to get a better impression.
