Best Catamaran Fishing Boat Brands

20th oct 2023 by lenny rudow.

Rightboat logo

Choosing the best catamaran fishing boats is no easy task, because in this day and age, you have plenty to choose from. This wasn’t always the case, but in recent years more and more power catamaran fishing boats have been hitting the market. The reasons are simple: Whether you’re looking at an offshore fishing catamaran, inshore catamaran fishing boats, or small catamaran fishing boats, foot-for-foot they tend to run smoother and more efficiently than their monohull brethren. While all the types of fishing boats are different and each has its own advantages and drawbacks, as a general rule, if you want to get to the fish fast in rough seas, nothing is better than a powercat for the job.

It’s tough to try to sort through various builders and nail down the best fishing boat brands , and the increase in the number of catamaran fishing boat manufacturers means choosing the top picks in this genre is as tough as any other. So, which brands are best? Here are our top picks in some of the most important categories and why we think they make the grade.

Catamaran Center Console Boat Brands

This will be a very short section, because virtually all of the catamaran sport fishing boats being built today are center consoles. Yes, some manufacturers offer pilothouse models or cuddy cabins, but those that don’t offer a lineup consisting mostly of center consoles are few and far between. So, keep on reading—the manufacturers we call out as tops for the more specific categories below all fall into the category of best catamaran center console boat brands, as well.

Offshore Fishing Catamaran Brands

Offshore boats need to meet some prerequisites: they have to be large and competent enough to run dozens of miles from shore, have the fuel capacity for cruising hours on end, and of course they need all the fishing accouterments to handle big game pelagics like tunas and billfish.

In many ways, Freeman is partially responsible for the current wave of cat popularity, because their 34- to 47-foot fleet was quickly adopted by a number of offshore fishing guides after they splashed their first model in 2007. Their boats are known for hat-stripping performance, often cruising comfortably at 50 mph or more, even in a head sea, with top-end speeds sometimes exceeding 70 mph. Tremendous fuel capacity and utterly massive fishboxes are some other traits the Freemans are famous for.

Freeman 47 offshore catamaran fishing boat

Invincible Boats offers a lineup including both monohulls and power catamarans , with center console cats ranging from 33 to 46 feet plus a 46-foot pilothouse model. These boats post spectacular speeds with cruising in the 50 mph range and often they can break 70 mph at top-end, thanks to semi-asymmetrical hulls with near-vertical inside walls. Invincible is also known for its advanced and customizable livewell systems. On the 46, for example, the boat can be rigged with up to four livewells up to 70 gallons each, fed by a sea chest system with as many as six pumps.

When judged by the number of hulls built, World Cat is one of the biggest powercat manufacturers in existence, and the company has a lineup that starts small but includes five models from 26 to 40 feet that are up to the task of offshore fishing. They have all the basic fishing features, plenty of range, and comparatively good performance, but what they’re known for when matched up against the competition is a healthy dose of family-friendly features. Unlike some angling-dedicated offshore fishing catamaran models, the World Cats feature lots of comfy seating, roomy head console compartments, freshwater showers, stereo systems, and similar touches that can take the edge off a long day of fishing.

Inshore Fishing Catamaran Boat Brands

Inshore anglers can be just as demanding as the offshore crowd, and when the weather is right many of them will head into the open ocean as well. So, the main defining factor separating offshore fishing catamaran boats from inshore catamaran fishing boats is simply size. And often, the line between the two gets blurred. As a result, you’ll see some newcomers here, but some of the best catamaran fishing boat brands we’ve already talked about could easily pull a repeat performance.

Caymas is a newcomer to the catamaran world, having built only monohulls up to the 2023 model year. Their new 34, however, is an impressive boat which has offshore abilities and will also make an excellent inshore fishing machine. It rides on a set of twin-stepped hulls with 18/22-degree deadrise surfaces at the transom and 50/55-degree entries at the bow, features a Hooker sea chest livewell system with 70 gallons standard and an additional 50 gallons optional, and plenty of high-end perks like lighted stowage compartments, a JL Marine audio system, and USB ports at the helm.

Tideline is a small, semi-custom builder in North Carolina, and their boats can be difficult to find on the market, but we need to mention them here because they build a 24-footer that’s well known as one of the finest inshore hybrid fishing cats around. With twin 200-hp outboards, it boasts 50-plus-mph performance, has an utterly massive forward casting deck for slinging lures to gamefish like reds and specks, and hull draft is a mere 14 inches so it can sneak into the shallows where few anglers tread.

Twin Vee does make some large models intended for offshore use but their 24- to 28-foot center console models are perfect for inshore angling. Better yet for many family fishermen who want a multipurpose platform, they also offer a pair of dual console 24-foot models. Twin Vees have a “compression tunnel” that packs air between the two hulls and compresses it as the boat moves forward, creating a cushion of sorts that makes for an unusually soft ride in choppy seas.

Twin Vee 260 GFX fishing catamaran

World Cat is back as we discuss the inshore scene, thanks to models like their 235CC and 260 and 280CC-X. The 235CC is designed like a bay boat, with large fore and aft casting decks, while the 260CC-X features a very unusual drop-down transom design, with the livewell and fishbox shifted into widened aft gunwales. Like other World Cats, these boats have plenty of comfort features to go along with the angling perks.

Small Catamaran Fishing Boat Brands

“Small” is a relative term, and while 20- to 24-footers may seem like small catamaran fishing boats to some folks, they seem mighty big to others. However, the distinction is more or less moot because in the current marketplace, no major production builders drop down below 22 feet, seven inches of LOA (the World Cat 235CC). If you want a cat under this size, you can look for a custom builder or search the used boat market. Twin Vee made plenty of 19- to 22-foot boats in years past, Tideline made a 19, and when they were in operation, catamaran boat brands like Leader and Nautico made a number of powercats between 14 and 21 feet.

Choosing the Best Catamaran Brand For You

Are there some powercat brands out there that build a great boat, but we haven’t mentioned? Absolutely. Arrow Cat builds a pair of interesting cabin boats that aren’t 100-percent fishing machines, but do have semi-fishy cockpits that would work just fine for plenty of people. C Dory makes a 25-footer that falls into the same category. And Aquila , which traditionally built large cruising boats, has recently introduced a 28-foot center console billed as a fishing boat. Any of these, or others, could be the “best” brand for you, depending on your personal needs and tastes. But the power catamaran fishing boat manufacturers we’ve called out here are all arguably at the top of the heap—nd if you take one for a sea trial, we’re betting you’ll agree.

Although kayaks may seem like the perfect boat for your needs, it is still important to consider what kayak you want to buy.

A sea kayak is a boat that is designed for use on the ocean. These boats are typically longer than they are wide and have a rounded hull. These boats usually have a rudder on them, allowing the user to steer the ship in whichever direction they want. The primary difference between sea kayaks and other types of kayaks is that sea kayaks are designed to be used on the ocean, while other kayaks are intended for use in lakes or ponds.

Guide to Choosing a Boat Suitable for Both Lakes and Oceans

Navigating diverse water bodies like calm lakes and unpredictable oceans requires a just as versatile boat. Here’s a handy guide to aid you in selecting the perfect boat that you can cruise confidently on both lakes and oceans.

Identify Your Needs

Start by clearly determining what you anticipate to get out of your boat. Will you use it for relaxed cruising, fishing, high-speed water sports, or long-distance traveling? The type and size of the boat will greatly depend on your specific needs.

Consider the Boat Size

Smaller boats like canoes, kayaks, and small pontoons might be perfect for leisurely lake trips, while mid-sized cabin cruisers or large yachts might be more suited for trips involving ocean travel and overnight stays.

Examine the Boat Design

Different boat designs serve different purposes. An open wide deck is ideal for fishing and activities needing more space, a feature found in center consoles and pontoons. For stability in both calm and rough waters, go for catamarans with their dual-hull design.

Check for Comfort and Accommodation

If you plan to spend extended time aboard, ensure comfortable seating and suitable accommodations. Cabin cruisers and yachts provide home-like amenities, making them a great choice for long ocean trips.

Assess the Boat’s Material

Boats meant for both lakes and oceans need to be strong and durable. Fiberglass and aluminum are typical materials known for their robustness and ability to withstand varying water conditions.

Think About Stability and Handling

A stable ride is crucial, regardless of the water body. Boats with a deep V-hull design help ensure stability in tranquil lake waters and choppy ocean waves.

Evaluate the Boat’s Power

Boats intended for ocean use tend to have more powerful engines to tackle waves and currents. Ensure the engine is strong enough for ocean use and adaptable enough for leisurely lake sailing.

Inspect Safety Features

Safety is paramount, especially when ocean sailing. Look for boats equipped with lifejackets, fire extinguishers, navigational lights, and a reliable communication system. Other safety features, like a self-bailing cockpit, can be advantageous in rough weather conditions.

Choosing the right boat requires careful consideration. Visit boat shows, take demo rides, and discuss your needs with experienced dealers. Make an informed choice and tackle both the lake and ocean with confidence.

safety tips for using a lake boat on the ocean

  • Always check the marine forecast before setting out.
  • Equip your boat with navigation charts of the ocean area.
  • Ensure your boat’s engine has adequate horsepower to handle ocean waves.
  • Secure all objects on the boat to prevent shifting in choppy waters.
  • Have the boat’s hull inspected for seaworthiness.
  • Equip your boat with a marine VHF radio for offshore communication.
  • Test the bilge pumps and make sure they’re functioning well to handle any flooding.
  • Have more lifejackets on board than the number of passengers.
  • Equip your boat with visual and sound signaling devices.
  • Keep a throwable life-saving device on the boat.
  • Carry enough provisions, including water and food, as ocean voyages can take longer than expected.
  • Always inform someone on shore about your expected return time and the approximate area you’ll be sailing.
  • Keep a first-aid kit and other emergency equipment handy.
  • Consider installing a self-bailing device to handle heavy water inflow in rough weather.
  • Make sure everyone on board follows a safety briefing before heading out to the ocean.

In conclusion, navigating the diverse waters of lakes and oceans opens up a world of aquatic adventures. However, it requires careful consideration when choosing the right boat and understanding how to safely handle the unique conditions each environment presents. This guide walks you through the essentials, from determining your boating needs to evaluating boat design, comfort, and safety features. It emphasizes foresight, preparation, and vigilance as critical factors for a successful journey, whether you’re exploring placid lakes or braving ocean waves. Embark on your nautical journey confidently, and make the most of your time on the water, regardless of where your adventures take you.

How big of a boat is needed to cross the ocean?

When crossing an ocean, a boat must have a specific size to fit in the water and move. A ship that is 20 feet in length is generally the minimum size required to cross an ocean. The size of the engine on the boat also affects the size of the boat. If the engine is large, the ship will be more significant.

Can you put a regular boat in the ocean?

You can put a boat in the ocean, but it is not recommended. Boats that are meant for ocean use are much more sturdy and can take more punishment than a regular boat. If you are going to be on the ocean for more than an hour or so, then it would be safer to have a boat that is made for ocean use.

Can you use a pontoon boat in the ocean?

Yes, you can use a pontoon boat in the ocean, but it’s best suited for calm, near-shore waters and not for high sea or rough weather.

What safety equipment should I have on my boat for ocean sailing?

Essential safety equipment for ocean sailing includes lifejackets, navigational lights, marine VHF radio, fire extinguishers, a first-aid kit, visual and sound signaling devices, and a throwable lifesaving device.

Are sailboats suitable for both lakes and oceans?

Yes, sailboats can be suitable for both lakes and oceans, but the choice will depend on the size of the lake and ocean conditions. Most importantly, they require sailing skills to navigate.

What should I consider when choosing a boat for both lakes and oceans?

Consider factors like your specific needs, boat size, design, material, comfort & accommodation, stability & handling, power, and safety features when choosing a boat for both lakes and oceans.

  • Maserati’s First Electric Boat Delivers Style and Fun on the Water—We Took It for a Spin

We're the world's only media outlet to test this stylish 34-footer on Italy's Lake Maggiore. Here's what we found.

The all-electric Tridente is nothing if not dashing. It joins other electric boats affiliated with sports car marques, including the Frauscher X Porsche 850 Fantom Air and BMW-designed Tyde foiling electric boat . The Maserati has a much more conventional look than the other two.

Maserati Traditional Hull

The Tridente debuted alongside the car manufacturer’s newest electric vehicle, the Grancabrio Folgore, meaning “lightning bolt” in Italian. Maserati’s head of design, Klaus Busse, was on hand for both launches. Busse, a genial and strikingly tall German, had this to say about Maserati’s design approach, and Italian design overall: “If you look at the design of the Porsche 911, for example, you can see the Germans evolved it little by little over time—as if they are on a road to the idea of perfection. But with Italians, every ten years or so, they break everything and start with something fresh and new.”

Somewhat ironically, the Tridente seems to pull more from the German school of thought. Sleek and classic looking, there is nothing groundbreaking about the aesthetics. The boat has the familiar design language of an old Riva runabout—gently cambered bow deck, tumblehome in the after section—though built with modern materials and colors, and adorned nearly everywhere with the Maserati emblem.

But when the Tridente first pulled into view beside the lake’s breakwater, and the dark-blue water shimmered off its steel-gray hull, for a moment the machine looked almost surreal. It was stunning.

Maserati Electric Sportboat

The boat is built around a carbon-fiber hull for rigidity and weight savings, and the fit and finish meets the standards one might expect: soft leathers, tight stitching, and a general feeling of solidity to the seating. This model seats eight comfortably, with wraparound seating at amidships and a scooped-out section aft that is, in effect, a giant sunpad. The cabin is tiny, but could fit a child who needs a nap out of the sun.

Maserati Tridente Electric Boat

Maserati enlisted Vita Power, the EV marine company, for Tridente’s electric propulsion system. The boat is powered by four batteries that weigh 3,200 pounds, which explains the choice of lightweight carbon fiber for the hull. The entire boat displaces 11,400 pounds, about 2,000 pounds less than a Riva Aquariva 33. That light weight, paired with the equivalent of 600 horsepower, lets the Tridente accelerate like a proper sportscar.

When I pinned the throttle I felt real G forces pressing me into the captain’s seat—common for a high-performance raceboat, but rare for an electric vessel. The helm is a simple setup: a center touchscreen and two throttles. The reported top end is 46 mph, but I saw 42.6. At a 25-knot cruise, the Tridente has a 43-mile range, more than enough to get from Monaco to Cannes on a single charge.

Maserati Tridente Electric Sportboat

Maserati says the batteries can be topped off in under an hour via a fast-charging DC connection. Running at cruise, the Maserati manifested the nimbleness requisite of a boat in this class, slicing cleanly through S turns and hard overs.

There were no waves, but I did send the Tridente through its own wake and was pleased with the way the hull split the chop. In the end, it proved a very fun boat to drive and looked exceptional with the lake and mountain backdrop.

The price may well be a bit much for most boaters to swallow, even if it’s the coolest superyacht tender on the planet. But if you want what is arguably the world’s most advanced and best-constructed electric boat, the Tridente fits the bill, an evolutionary leap for a classic-looking Italian runabout.

Things To Do

Subscriber only, travel | mount dora’s catboat adventure tour has guests driving a sporty two-seater boat.

This is exactly where I found myself one recent sunny morning in Mount Dora — seated at the controls of a sporty, two-seater catamaran boat, with my girlfriend Karissa riding in the passenger seat, on a tour led by Capt. Todd Voss, our funny and fearless leader, for the excursion. The CatBoat Adventures tour , which launched from the Mount Dora Boating Center and Marina , took us flying across Lake Dora and through the scenic, peaceful Dora Canal that was teeming with Floridian flora and fauna.

Learning how to operate the small catamaran boats, which were powered by a 30-horsepower motor, was fairly intuitive, as we learned in a tutorial laced with dad jokes and comical quips. The captain’s seat, on the craft’s starboard side, had a throttle control on the driver’s right-hand side and a steering control on the left. Pulling the lever backward would cause the craft to turn left or forward to turn right.

Fun fact: These CraigCat boats , which are outfitted with bimini tops, bucket seats and a dry storage compartment, have been built in Orlando since 1990; the company is headquartered at a facility on Silver Star Road west of College Park.

After a quick demonstration and a few laps at idle speed near the Mount Dora lighthouse, Voss joined us on the water and announced on his walkie-talkie to our group of four boats that we would be traveling several miles across Lake Dora. Without hesitation, he pushed his throttle to the max, and we all followed suit, hair blowing in the wind. A grin immediately spread across my face, and it stayed there for the remainder of the two-hour experience.

As we zipped across Lake Dora, Voss stopped to point out osprey nests and periodically checked to make sure the group had a good handle on how to drive the boats. Speeding across the lake with the throttle pushed to the max proved exhilarating, but entering the Dora Canal provided a serene, shady respite from the open sun with towering cypress trees and plenty of birds to spot — including a limpkin, great blue herons, anhingas, great egrets and more.

Cruising at a notch above idle speed, our time in the canal included a history lesson about the Indigenous people who once inhabited Central Florida, a quick water gun battle with the captain of another passing tour, bubbles and sing-alongs every time we passed under a bridge. Though I can’t be sure how each of the guides runs their tours, requesting Capt. Todd will ensure a similar, fun-filled time on the water.

Side note: At the tour’s halfway turnaround point, there is an option for the driver and passenger to switch places carefully while following the tour guide’s instructions.

On our way out of the canal, we passed a small gnome garden and a curious, quirky dolphin statue embedded with a TV — “I once asked them what porpoise it served,” remarked our captain — before returning to the open lake, where we immediately saw seaplanes taxiing across the water and even taking off. This happened right as we were passing Tavares, “America’s Seaplane City,” where there was visible flight activity even on a random Wednesday.

Venturing back across Lake Dora, we stopped to see interesting waterfront homes — complete with a sandhill crane flyover — and then made our way back toward the marina, zipping along at full speed until nearing the lighthouse once again. In the blink of an eye, our exciting, fun and informative two-hour journey on the water was over. If I could do it all again, I would in a heartbeat.

Best Crabbing Locations in Florida

Table of Contents

Ready to try crabbing in Florida? Capture those tasty critters in these top locations.

Stone crabs are a hot commodity in Florida, and if you want to enjoy some claws, you’ll have to pay top dollar—or catch your own. But catching those feisty critters is no small task. First off, you’ll need to own or rent a boat in Florida , in order to get to the open waters where they live. Then you’ll have to either trap the crabs or dive for them using snorkel or scuba gear. Once you catch a crab you can snap off those tasty claws, but you’ll need to catch a bunch of them to make a full meal.

When choosing a boat for crabbing you have plenty of options, but some styles do work better than others. Center console boats are a top choice since they have plenty of open deck space and are relatively easy to clean up. If you stay in protected waters, a pontoon boat may also serve you well. In truth you can make just about any boat work, as long as there’s space to pull a trap or a swim platform to dive from.

The Florida Keys

Crabbing in the Florida Keys

The Keys are one of the best places in all of Florida to hunt for stone crabs. Rocky areas, grassbeds, and channel edges can all be good spots, and bridge pilings can be another stone crab hotspot. They’ll often be in fairly shallow water of eight to 15 feet and sometimes in even shallower depths, but may also be found down to 30 or so feet at times. You’ll find stone crabs from Key Largo clear down to Key West so choosing a specific location in the Keys isn’t a make-or-break decision.

Rent a boat in the Florida Keys.

Cape Coral and Fort Meyers

Though you’ll want to make sure you’re close to the Gulf and not far up Charlotte Harbor, this can be a great area for stone crab hunters because there are plenty of eight- to 15-foot depths and channel edges where the crabs like to roam. There’s also not quite as much competition as you’ll find in some of the crabbing grounds closer to major population centers. You’ll usually catch even more crabs if you try the nearshore Gulf. But there’s a catch: since the Gulf is open and exposed, you may not be able to check your traps or go out on a crab-catching excursion if it’s blustery out. Worse for trappers, in areas that are open and exposed to the winter winds it’s not unusual for heavy seas to drag your traps—and your crabs—away from their original location. If that happens, you probably won’t ever find them again. So, choose your timing and your spots carefully.

Tampa and St. Pete Beach

Miami and Biscayne Bay

Miami and Biscayne crabbing

Miami may be a bustling city, but its waterways are bustling with wildlife—including stone crabs. Since the open Atlantic can be quite rough here especially during the winter crabbing season, most people stick to Biscayne Bay. Much of the bay is quite shallow but you can find crabs in five to 15 feet of water. The best areas tend to be along the edges of deeper channels and around bridge pilings or other rocky areas. But again, remember that trying areas with plenty of current is key.

Rent a boat in Miami, FL .

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale crabbing locations

The farther you go up the coast the tougher it will be to catch a pile of stone crabs. Plus, the waters of Fort Lauderdale are quite crowded. Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t catch stone crabs here. Channel edges along the intracoastal where there’s eight to 10 feet of water can work, although one has to remember that lots of boats will be going by and it’s not unusual to lose a large number of traps in heavily populated areas. The bottom line is that if you want to dedicate time and effort to catching stone crabs you’re probably better off heading farther south to areas with larger bays that enjoy strong currents, or to the Gulf coast. But if you happen to find yourself in Fort Lauderdale and have the urge to give it a shot, it certainly is possible to catch a crab or two.

Stone Crab Crabbing Regulations in Florida

The season for crabbing in Florida runs from October 15 through May 1, however, it’s legal to put out traps up to 10 days prior as long as you don’t harvest from them until the season opens. Recreational crabbers can have up to five traps, harvest up to one gallon of claws per day per person but no more than two gallons per boat, and all claws have a minimum size of 2 7/8 inches. Harvesting from egg-bearing females is not allowed. Regulations for harvesting via snorkeling or scuba diving are the same, but it’s illegal to use spears or gear that can puncture or crush the crab.

There are a number of additional details to pay attention to, such as how you register and mark your traps, the makeup of the traps themselves, and how to measure the claws. For a full description of all the rules, check out the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Stone Crab webpage.

Florida Crabbing Tips

  • You’re allowed to keep both claws, but many people frown upon the practice and only keep one. That gives the crab a better chance of survival.
  • Be careful in how you remove the claws from the crabs, as this also has an impact on their survival. Simply insert the tip of a knife or sharp object into the underside of the “elbow” joint halfway up the claw and give it a wiggle. Then the crab will drop the claw off all on its own.
  • Before you go crabbing with traps, go fishing. Fish heads and bodies make excellent bait.
  • Stone crabs get active when strong cold fronts push through. So when one’s heading your way, setting out traps with fresh bait is a good move.
  • Use a line at least twice the depth of the water. But don’t use more than three times the water depth or a lot more line will be near the surface, where it’s likely to be snagged or cut off by a boat propeller.
  • Wear thick, rugged gloves when diving for stone crabs. They hide under rocks and in crevasses and you’ll have to reach in there to get them out.
  • If a crab pinches you, don’t pull back or they won’t let go. Instead just sit tight and don’t move, and the crab will let go all on its own. It will be painful for a second or two, but it won’t do any permanent damage

New interest in plan to link boats from Palm Beach County lakes to Intracoastal and ocean

  • The Blueway Trail is a chain of freshwater lakes that runs like a spine down the center of Palm Beach County.
  • There is renewed enthusiasm for the idea of connecting the lakes to the Lake Worth Lagoon, the Intracoastal Waterway and the ocean.
  • Residents along the C-51 expressed concerns a boat lift would disrupt wildlife through increased boat traffic.

When he is not teaching science at Watson B. Duncan Middle School, Dave Aargaard can often be found on the  Blueway Trail,  the chain of freshwater lakes that runs like a spine down the center of Palm Beach County.

For about a decade, Aagaard heard about efforts to connect the lakes to the Lake Worth Lagoon, the Intracoastal Waterway and the ocean via a boat lift from the C-51 Canal.

“There is just so much opportunity going from fresh water to blue water,” said Aagaard, a Lake Clarke Shores resident who also  organizes fish camps and captains charters aboard his 22-foot Sea Hunt. “You could go to the ocean, you could go fishing, you could go to all the restaurants and bars and sandbars. We love the chain of lakes, but having the best of both worlds would be a dream for all residents.”

Now there is renewed enthusiasm for the idea of connecting the lakes, with talk of possibly moving away from the longstanding boat lift proposal to digging a bypass around the flood-control spillway on the C-51.

The bypass would work like a lock at Spillway Park, said Richard Pinsky, who stepped down as president of the Blueway Trail Inc. to dedicate himself to resurrecting this project. “Your boat would be walked through a little channel, and then with a boardwalk, you would come out on the other side and then there'd be a portage area there as well.”

In 2017, the boat lift at Spillway Park seemed like a done deal with the state Legislature allocating $250,000. But political winds changed amid opposition from some Lake Worth Beach homeowners, and the COVID pandemic appeared to put a stake through the project.

Residents along the C-51  expressed concerns  that a boat lift would disrupt wildlife through increased boat traffic.

“They thought there would be hoodlums racing up and down the waterway,” said former West Palm Beach Commissioner Shanon Materio, an early proponent of the boat lift. “Then the cities lost interest.”

Lake Worth Beach Mayor Betty Resch said she is interested in hearing an alternative proposal to the boat lift at Spillway Park. “It’s a beautiful pastoral park,” she said. “If they propose something that made sense, I would certainly entertain it — but only if it makes sense.”

Why the opposition says a bypass is ‘not a smart idea’

On Friday morning after Independence Day, Carl Dahlborg and Joe Duval were fishing at the park. They are at least one generation apart but are aligned in the idea that a boat lift or bypass would ruin the oasis where they catch snook nearly a yard long.

“It just doesn’t seem like a smart idea,” said Dahlborg, 80. “I close my eyes and envision a day in August and they got the boat lift and there are 50 boats lined up in the thunder, lightning and rain.”

Duval said there is a tight-knit community of fishermen and nearby residents — they often throw Spillway parties — who fear a boatlift or bypass would be disastrous for the park.

He also said that only boats less than 24 feet long and can get under the bridges at Interstate 95 and Dixie Highway to access the lift anyway.

“See that bridge there? That ain’t going nowhere,” Duval points toward Dixie. “The only reason they're going to do it is to increase the property value for people in Lake Clarke Shores, so they can say they have saltwater access.”

Ocean access certainly would be a selling point. A  feasibility study found waterfront property values could increase up to 40% if a boat lift were installed. There is also an apartment complex planned  on the edge of the C-51 on Dixie that is touted as the new and improved gateway to Lake Worth Beach.

Chain of blue lakes in Palm Beach County is postcard worthy

The chain of lakes, aka Blueway Trail , is one of Palm Beach County’s greatest assets.

Motorists on Interstate 95 going through Delray Beach might catch a real-time Florida postcard of a paddleboarder or a kayaker rowing north from Lake Ida along one of the connecting canals. Besides Lake Ida, the Blueway Trail includes adjacent Lake Eden, Lake Osborne in Lake Worth Beach, Lake Clarke and Pine Lake in West Palm Beach. It’s a 30-mile stretch.

Each lake offers something different. Personal watercraft enthusiasts enjoy Lake Ida on most sunny days. Some of the county’s best-known parks abut the lakes with picnic areas, playgrounds, dog parks and, in the case of Lake Osborne, adjacent golf.

Bass, bluegill and cichlids can be found among the cattails and hydrilla for anglers casting from the shore or boat.

“Peacock bass is the one that really keeps me busy. People from all over the world come to catch peacock bass,” Aagaard said. “They’re a really good fighting fish, and they're really pretty.”

Still, the ocean calls, certainly to the 3,500 residents of Lake Clarke Shores, who can get to the C-51 Canal the fastest. For anglers, man-made islands in the lagoon just off the Lake Worth Golf Course teem with snook.

An engineering firm had been selected and preliminary plans had been drawn up for the boat lift with the consent of the South Florida Water Management District. The lift would move the boat — sans captain and passengers — over the flood control structure to the Intracoastal, where it could be boarded again. The plan was to charge boaters to help maintain the lift.

“There were a lot of impediments,” Materio said.

From a design aspect, she said, the canal banks around the spillway are steep. No municipality, nor the water management district, wanted to be in charge of operating the lift. And finally, there were homeowners on the Lake Worth Beach side protesting.

What about a public-private partnership for the plan?

Pinsky said the Blueway Trail Inc. was formed in 2018 — the name “chain of lakes” was already taken upstate — in hopes of getting a state designation of a paddleway. “Part of the feature and uniqueness of the trail would be the connectivity of fresh water to salt water, right?” he said.

The effort failed and the wind went out of the sails of the project. Materio lost  re-election by 183 votes in 2018 and former Palm Beach County Mayor Dave Kerner, another proponent, now heads up the department of Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles in Tallahassee.

HURRICANE SEASON 2024: What to do with your boat in Florida if a storm approaches

“We have just been unable to get the government financial backing and support that is needed,” said Paul Shalhoub, who succeeded Pinsky as president of Blueway Trail. “So right now, we're switching our focus to see if we can bring a public-private partnership to the table.”

Shaloub, a former mayor of Lake Clarke Shores, said the boat lift is still the dominant proposal because the engineering design and feasibility study is complete.

“We're at the point where everything is back on the table,” he said. “We need to find a way to get the project done, to connect the chain of lakes, and if that's a bypass or boat lift, we're going to figure it out.”

Val Rodriguez, another former Lake Clarke Shores mayor, said there are 1,100 houses on the water in the town with owners who might want a bigger adventure than just the lakes. “You can take a nice long boat ride and end up at Peanut Island — and it promotes the ecosystem,” he said.

Rodriguez pauses, adding, “Obviously, it makes all the houses on this side much more desirable.”

How to Charter a Boat

If you want to sail off into the sunset, at least temporarily, you need to understand how to get aboard first.

An illustration of the bow of a boat with three women with flowing hair and cocktails looking over a man playing a guitar and then off in the water, four other vacationers are sunbathing on inner tubes.

By Lauren Sloss

This time of year, it’s an inevitable thought: Life would be that much better out on the water. Specifically, on a boat.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water.

Whom are you traveling with?

Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents?

Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking.

“The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said.

Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain?

Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. Some companies offer the opportunity for a “bareboat” charter, in which you rent the boat and take on the navigation and provisioning yourself, while others exclusively offer fully staffed options, including a captain and a cook.

If you want to captain the boat yourself, almost all outfits require some kind of proof of sailing or boating experience, often in line with local regulations.

Edward King, 45, an executive at a streaming company based in San Francisco, is experienced in sailing the city’s waterways. But on vacation, he said he would prefer to let a captain and crew take the lead.

Mr. King said he appreciates a captain who is familiar with both the local waters — “they’ll know how to avoid sailing into a certain sandbar,” he said, — as well as the local attractions.

In contrast, Matt Blake, 38, a software engineer based in Oakland, Calif., was eager to grow his sailing experience during a recent trip to La Paz, Mexico, with his fiancée. He hired a captain but made clear that the captain was there to help and teach.

Where do you want to go?

“Do you want something that’s more culturally oriented? Nature oriented? An adventure trip?” asked Mary Curry, the voyage product director of Adventure Life , which offers small group tours and private trips on land and on water around the world.

That answer can determine your destination. Popular cruising grounds include the Caribbean, Croatia, Alaska and French Polynesia, but the sky — or the sea — is really the limit. For help narrowing your focus, travel advisers often have relationships with charter companies or outfits around the world, and sailing publications offer recommendations.

Kyla Malkani, who has had experience with charters working as a destination wedding planner, recommends consulting the concierge of waterfront hotels, particularly for short-term or day rentals.

“A lot of times they will have either their own fleet or they will have some sort of connection at a dock,” said Ms. Malkani, 37, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is currently working as a content creator and freelance event planner.

What kind of boat?

Where you want to travel and for how long will likely determine the kinds of boats that are available to you. Crucial at this point, too, is an understanding of the boat’s layout and amenities.

“You definitely want to choose the right kind of boat,” said Ms. Malkani. “If you want more adventure, a sailboat is nice. If you’re looking for a luxury party environment, a yacht is best. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.”

David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations.

“You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said.

Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities.

When should I book?

Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning.

“You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.”

Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too.

The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.”

How much does it cost?

Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process.

What if I didn’t plan far in advance?

While advanced planning is encouraged, and often necessary for bigger boat trips, it’s possible to book a boat last-minute.

Boatsetter , an Airbnb-like platform for boats, is a good resource for last-minute bookings, especially for day trips, and even has an Instant Book option for down-to-the-wire bookings.

“If it’s for a special event, or around major holidays, you may want to book a month or two in advance. But for general bookings, you can find options within a week or two,” said Kim Koditek, Boatsetter’s head of brand strategy and communications, of the company’s overnight offerings, which appear on their platform under the luxury yacht charters category .

Ms. Malkani has used Boatsetter for some of her charters, most of which have been booked with a specific goal in mind.

“I’m a sunset chaser,” she said. “My husband and I just really love being on the water, and we always try to squeeze in some sort of boat day activity when we’re traveling.”

Sail Away on Whistler’s Alta Lake

Whistler is well known for its laid-back lake culture, with mountains, trees, docks and fresh water providing many idyllic spots to hang out and relax on a warm sunny day. What people might not know is that the north end of Alta Lake is also home to a reliable afternoon thermal, making it the perfect place to learn and practise sailing.

The History of Sailing in Whistler

Alta Lake, formerly Summit Lake, was the site of Whistler’s first permanent tourist operation, Rainbow Lodge. Myrtle and Alex Philip, a young entrepreneurial couple from Maine, opened the fishing lodge of their dreams in 1914 on the site where Rainbow Park now sits. Geographically isolated from other communities, lodge guests arrived by train on the Pacific Great Eastern railroad. Aside from walking, illegally, along the newly formed railroad, the easiest way to get around town was by water, and boating was a core component of life at Rainbow Lodge.

Sailboats sit on a dock at Alta Lake in the rising sun in Whistler.

Every morning fresh milk and cream had to be boated over from nearby Tapley’s Farm for guests’ breakfasts. Myrtle also relied on catching fish to feed her guests, especially in the winter when other protein sources were scarce. One winter she sprained her ankle badly, so together with her dad she rigged a rudimentary sail onto a wooden raft, allowing her to sail back and forth across the frozen lake to her fishing holes and prevent her guests from going hungry.

As Whistler became more accessible by road, sailing became less about transport and more about sport and recreation. In 1966 the Alta Lake Sailing Club was formed and operated out of the popular Cypress Lodge at the north end of Alta Lake.

Their flagship annual event, the Whistler Regatta , was first held in 1965 and continues to this day. Held in late August, it was nicknamed the “Regretta” for the regret the community feels as summer comes to a close.

The non-profit Whistler Sailing Association was formed in 2008 by a group of local dinghy* enthusiasts and continues to operate out of the same building next to The Point Artist-Run Centre. Today the association has grown into a fully accredited sailing school offering summer sailing programs for kids and youth, and adult programming including learn to sail and race nights.

*A dinghy is a small sailboat that doesn’t have a weighted keel. They’re light, manoeuvrable boats that require more athleticism and help you to hone your skills. Most of the boats sailed in the Olympics are dinghies.

Whistler Sailing holds weekly club races throughout the summer. The Wednesday Night Races kick off at 6:15 PM and the series is open to all racing and season pass members. Drop-in attendance is allowed at a minimal fee per person and all participants must have a basic membership to the non-profit organization.

While racing is a great way to test your skills as a sailor, Whistler Sailing’s GM Francois Hebert is passionate about encouraging more people to take up sailing and is focused on teaching beginners and those looking to hone their existing techniques.

Learning to Sail in Whistler

Francois grew up sailing on the Great Lakes with his parents and learnt to sail when he was eight years old. Recently crowned the 2023 ILCA 7 US Masters National Champion, he spent many years coaching all over but saw an opportunity to start his own sailing school in Whistler because of Alta Lake’s special location. The wide expanse of fresh water, combined with the wind, makes Alta Lake the perfect place to learn to sail.

“It’s in a geographic aspect of the valley where it really narrows, creating a bit of a funnel,” Francois says. “And the temperature in the valley is what we call a thermal, so whenever Pemberton gets a couple degrees warmer than Whistler, which it typically does every afternoon, then the wind comes. It’s rare to have no wind.”

Five sailboats make their way across Alta Lake, part of a kids' summer camp in Whistler.

Whistler Sailing has a variety of programs for people interested in learning to sail. Kids’ week-long summer camps are held every week during July and August and cater to ages five and up. Adults have access to group lessons in June, and private lessons all summer. For those with some sailing experience, you can charter or rent a boat .

Hebert recommends taking the Hobie Wave catamaran, as “it’s a very popular two-hull boat that people are likely familiar with from visiting resorts like Club Med.”

Wing Foiling Lessons in Whistler

Anyone with a medium amount of sailing experience looking to try something different will want to consider the brand-new wing foiling lessons .   Combining elements of windsurfing, kiteboarding and surfing, wing foiling offers a unique blend of wind and water dynamics. The new sport is taking off right now and what makes it stand out, literally, from other water sports is the aeroplane technology used to achieve vertical lift.

A person wing foiling on Alta Lake in Whistler. They stand on the board holding the "wings" to catch the wind.

“You have a sail basically, that’s called a wing, that you control just with your hands, so there’s no mast like a traditional windsurfer. And you stand on what’s called a hydrofoil, so you’re essentially using two wings and one of the wings is underwater,” Francois explains. ‘This little aircraft wing that works under the water pushes you all the way up until your board is flying about a metre above the surface. It’s extremely quiet and an amazing feeling, you really feel like you’re flying.”

Francois’ passion for wing foiling is palpable and it’s an experience he wants to share with others.

“It’s a really great thing that you can do on Alta Lake, it’s windy enough and there’s enough space that it’s a really good place to learn, which is why we’ve started a school for wing foiling.”

Wing foiling lessons begin on dry land, learning how to control the wing in the wind. They then progress to using the board without the foil, before putting all the equipment together for the full wing foiling experience. Whistler Sailing also offer packages that include tow foiling as a way to focus on developing hydrofoil handling skills while still progressing with wing handling.

A person on a wing foil slices through the blue waters of Alta Lake in Whistler.

But, Francois is keen to point out, wing foiling is more geared towards people who have previous sailing experience.

“You need some basic sailing knowledge before going in that direction. If you’ve never sailed before it’s a bit harder because you need some water experience and notion of winds,” says Francois. “But it’s accessible to anyone with even a medium amount of sailing experience.”

After thirty years on the water, Francois credits the multi-dimensional nature of sailing for his life-long love of the sport.

“Sailing is a complex sport in many ways and you can learn new things throughout your whole life. You can always go out on the water and encounter a condition you haven’t seen before. It’s a lot of fun.”

With so many outdoor sports on offer in Whistler, it can sometimes be hard to choose between them. On those hot summer days, nothing beats the natural air conditioning of dry wind hitting cold lake water. Adding sailing to your skill set might just open up a new way to explore.

Father goes missing in lake after he rescued his struggling child from the water

BRAXTON COUNTY, W.Va. ( WSAZ /Gray News) - A search is being conducted at a lake in West Virginia after a 25-year-old father went missing after saving his child from drowning.

A call was placed Monday just before noon regarding a possible drowning at Sutton Lake in the Bee Run area, dispatchers said.

Crews searched for the Charleston man Tuesday.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” said Capt. Douglas Benson with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Police. “There is no other way to look at it. It is a terrible tragedy.”

The department said the man is presumed dead.

Witnesses told officials the man was on a boat when he went into the water to help one of his children.

Officials said the child went down a slide attached to the boat before being seen struggling in the water after their life jacket shifted while going down the slide.

The man went into the water to get the child to safety.

Officials said he was not wearing a life jacket.

After he got the child back on the boat, the man slipped under the water and did not resurface.

Crews began searching Monday and resumed the search Tuesday morning.

Search crews are having a hard time with visibility, officials say.
