Price drop on Wally sailing yacht Alexia

The 30.63 sailing yacht Alexia has had a price reduction of €200,000, listed for sale by Arne Ploch at Camper & Nicholsons International .

Built in composite by Italian yard Wally with external and internal design by Javier Soto Acebal , she was delivered in 2004 as a Wally 98 model and has had the same owner since new. Accommodation is for six guests in three cabins comprising a master suite and two twins, all with en suite shower facilities.

Alexia has proved to be a masterful race winner, notably the Maxi Rolex Cup and Les Voiles de Saint Tropez. With full solid carbon rigging, water ballast and trim tabs, she is an exceptional sailing yacht with racing at her core.

As a performance cruiser, she is custom-built to withstand trans-oceanic and transatlantic crossings. With her traditional mahogany and smooth brass exterior features, along with a Bimini top for the centre cockpit, Alexia is designed to withstand all types of weather conditions.

A main saloon boasts in-built seating and a dining table to starboard that seats up to ten guests. A traditional interior look is achieved by a glossy mahogany detailing alongside plush cream furnishings.

Under power, a 315hp Yanmar diesel engine allows a cruising speed of 10 knots, topping out at 12 knots.

Alexia is now asking €3,600,000.

O nly very few vessels can afford the luxury of boasting of being a conjunction of speed, beauty and technology, as well as having been designed to the requests of clients that enjoy both sailing regattas and well deserved moments of recreation. This is the Alexia.

This beautiful sloop is the conjunction of shoulder-to-shoulder work by all involved, from the skipper to the crewmen, passing through all levels. To sum up, this yacht, besides carrying on board the finest selection of components, has a fully human touch, which, especially for the owner, has a special value, since it implies that the result is a unique vessel, which meets all the spec- ifications requested.

The exterior looks completely like a competi- tion yacht; extremely clean lines considered for race performance, which even when unrigged, it is evident that we are dealing the vessel designed to fight sea battles. The masts, as are many compo- nents of this boat and as a Wally custom, for the most part are made of carbon fiber, which gives them rigidity and lightness, as well as resistance.

Once the sails are unfurled, there is not the slightest doubt of what this yacht is capable dur- ing a race, with all the sails unfurled in their magnificence; we know beforehand what can be expected once this efficient yacht sets sail.

Below decks, we find the predominance of wood that offers us the unmatchable warmth of any other material; everything is balanced from the distribution through to the furnishings and upholstery. It is evident that practicality and comfort were sought from the very beginning in this vessel, but above all, freedom of movement, as well as the ergonomics it affords.

The main lounge is living proof of this because besides its impeccable distribution and the size of its areas, all possible space is used to the full, with the bookcases on both sides as evidence of this. It is also notable that despite their proximity, both the dining room and the lounge are perfectly and very subtly defined.

Further forward, we find two double cabins, both with full integrated bathrooms, wardrobes and the amenities expected of a yacht of this class. In the bow, we find the owner’s cabin, which has two individual beds, a spacious bathroom to star- board, while on the port side, a very large dressing room. To the stern, aft from the main lounge, we find the galley towards starboard, whose equipment allows sailors to enjoy the delicious culinary delights offered by the sea. Passing the galley, towards the stern, we find the crew area, a very pleasant area with a center table and a sofa on the starboard side. The large apparatus such as the refrigerators and the dishwashers can be found to port and continuing aft, we find the crew cabins, two doubles with their own bathrooms and a communal shower. Access to these cabins is through the main exterior deck.

Lastly, also at the stem, there is a garage for the auxiliary launch, which is also of a good size.

Wallycento Galateia

Superb racing prowess combined with expansive deck space, exceptionally comfortable interiors and fast, slick cruising.

That’s the exhilarating and exciting cocktail promised by the Wallycentos. And, of course, the brain behind them, Wally founder and president Luca Bassani Antivari, who sums the craft up as follows: “Being able to sail complete comfort as fast as one of the top maxi racers and also in compete at the very highest levels is what every sailor dreams about.

The Wallycentos are the first and only superyachts to make that dream come true.” A prospect that dazzled and seduced the owner of the third Wallycento, Galateia. “We wanted a yacht that was a response to a frenetic lifestyle,” the American sailing devotee explains. “A simple space with no distractions and minimalist furnishings. We wanted to be able to stay in contact with nature and to cruise our favourite places: Italy, Greece, Croatia, Spain. On top of all that, we wanted to have fun competing with other friends in the Wally Class.

So we asked for a modern, easy-to-handle cruising superyacht with the performance of a maxi-racer. A yacht that would deliver the thrill of speed even in the Mediterranean’s medium breezes.”

That fairly daunting string of requests formed after the owner saw Magic Carpet3, the Wallycento penned by John Reichel and Jim Pugh which was the second in the series after Hamilton (now Open Season, ed.’s note).

Essentially, this third addition is an evolution of Magic Carpet3. “Galateia is a real leap forward in the lifting keel superyacht world,” explains Jim Pugh. “The owner really liked Magic Carpet3’s performance and aesthetic. He definitely wanted something similar but more high performance. So our aim was to create a new Wallycento generation.

To boost performance, we had to revise and develop every aspect of the project: naval architecture, structural engineering, hull, sail plan and appendages. We also had to do all that in combination with optimising weight to deliver a ligher boat overall.”

Galateia was built by Green Marine in England and, thanks to all that work, has a displacement that is almost 1.5 tonnes lighter than Magic Carpet3. Her interiors are by successful interior design Alexia Leuschen, who also happens to be the owner’s wife and was thus perfectly positioned to interpret his and the family’s tastes. She worked hand-in-glove with AIM Yachts Interiors, the project manager and Struik & Hamerslag.

Once again, the challenge was staying mindful of weight when crafting Galateia’s interior styling too. That meant Leuschen had to create her own take on the linear purity shared by all Luca Bassani’s yachts. Exterior-wise, that boils down to lots of uncluttered deck space thanks to the easy-sailing philosophy that is a Wally signature. Interior-wise, Leuschen has created a style that has a 1950s feel.

The layout is straightforward with the central living area linked directly to the 10-seater guest cockpit. The dining area, featuring a Martino Gamper table, is to port. To starboard are a large sofa and the nav area. The owner’s suite is forward of this space as are the two twin guest cabins.

The style is personal in the extreme thanks to a host of clever details dropped into the overall look. These include linen-trimmed wall panels that hint at sails and, of course, lamps, appliques and accessories that reference design greats Giò Ponti, Charlotte Perriand and Le Corbusier. The two crew cabins, service areas and tender garage all lie aft, completing Galateia’s interiors.

The interior colour palette reflects that of the exterior, combining natural and light hues with pastel wood inserts that lend a vintage feel. The detailing and standard of cabinetry right throughout Galateia are exceptional too. Luxe Tanganyika walnut, for instance, is used for the floorings, while the closets and bureaus are in wonderfully-scented cedar wood.

Occasional carbon-fibre elements, however, provide a reminder that Galateia is actually a high-tech superyacht. All in all, this is a palette comprising not just materials but also exemplifying a sophisticated and clever dosing of performance, comfort, technologies and seductive flourishes that make both Galateia and the whole Wallycento absolutely unique
