Alaska Yacht Charter - Tracy Arm Cliffs, Alaska, beautfiful lush greenery on cliffs above clear waters

Yacht Charter Alaska

Cruise Alaska and adventure beyond luxury. A yacht charter through the Inside Passage is an experience akin to the final frontier.

An Alaska yacht charter is ideal for those longing for pure stillness, tranquillity, and untouched wilderness. Cruise Alaska, the northernmost state of the United States, on a luxury yacht and navigate lush yet rugged natural landscapes that offer some of the most incredible scenery in the world. Breeze past giant glaciers and witness the region’s wonderful wildlife. You’ll set your sights on bears, whales, and bald eagles in their natural habitats. Spend a day fishing for fresh wild salmon or hiking mountains. Alaska is quickly becoming an “it” destination for adventurous cruisers who want to experience nature at its most pristine on their private yacht charter. The tranquillity and rawness of the Alaskan wilderness are a unique change from typical yacht charter destinations. An Alaska yacht charter will exceed your expectations with adventure, relaxation, and luxury elements.

Where can I cruise to during an Alaska yacht charter?

Alaska’s Inside Passage is considered one of the most scenic and popular stretches of coastline, snaking between the mainland and off-lying islands and islets to the southeast. Cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage is as far removed as you can get from the favored Mediterranean and Caribbean superyacht cruising grounds. Alaska is the largest state in the U.S. regarding land and water, and the area is so vast that you can usually steer a solitary route, enjoying the complete wilderness onboard your charter yacht. This destination is perfect for charterers looking for completely secluded cruising grounds to unwind and be at peace with a group of friends or family aboard.

Hotspots to explore on an Alaska yacht charter

Exploring Alaska on a yacht offers a plethora of breathtaking locations to visit. Apart from popular destinations like Glacier Bay, Kenai Fjords National Park, and the Inside Passage, here are some other locations worth exploring:

Best Yachts for Charter in Alaska

Motor yachts for charter in alaska, sailing yachts for charter in alaska, alaska charter faqs, where is alaska .

Alaska – also known as The Last Frontier – is located on the northwest extremity of North America, bordering British Columbia and Yukon in Canada. It is the 49th and largest state in the U.S. It was admitted to the union in January 1959. Alaska is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea, the Chukchi Sea, and the Beaufort Sea, offering some of the world’s most breathtaking coastal scenery. Alaska is the only U.S. state to border two nations.

Where can I embark on an Alaska yacht charter?

A luxury charter in this region typically begins across the border in Canada’s Vancouver or Seattle, Washington, in the U.S. before cruising up the coastline and across the border into Alaska; alternatively, you can choose to board your luxury yacht in Alaska’s capital, Juneau. Wherever you decide to embark, as soon as you set sail, the world drifts far into the distance. On an Alaska yacht charter, it is all about timeless, majestic landscapes and the remarkable wildlife that has inhabited the area for thousands of years. From ancient snowfields, glaciers, and fjords to soaring eagles in lofty mountains, bears in dense forests to pods of whales escorting you through the wilds of America’s 49th state, Alaska, is one of the world’s most serene and otherworldly cruising grounds.

Why charter a yacht in Alaska?

Alaska offers breathtaking scenery, spectacular wild animals , and unmatched wilderness – making it an increasingly sought-after destination with travelers seeking an alternative vacation experience. Cruising Alaska’s coastline is to escape the crowds and enjoy nature in all its undiluted beauty.

What makes this land even more remarkable is its wilderness: aboard your private crewed yacht, you will enjoy a tranquil experience far from the madding crowds. Additionally, you can reach places that otherwise would be almost impossible to visit.

Alaska’s wild animals will leave you speechless: See whales breaching the icy waters, brown bears in their natural habitat, and spectacular bald eagles soaring overhead. Prince William Sound is a must-visit, boasting over 100 glaciers, islands, fjords, and more than 120 different species of animals.

Alaska is also one of the best spots for seeing the Northern Lights, especially if you follow the Alaskan coastline to the extreme north. It is considered the best destination to watch this dazzling show light up the night sky.

The remote regions of Alaska are visited by only a small number of people each year, and an Alaska superyacht charter offers the best way to experience the magic of this spectacular destination.

What to do and see on a charter in Alaska?

There is a wonderful selection of things to see and do on a yacht charter in Alaska, most centering around the great outdoors. Here are a few ideas:

Juneau is a coastal city in Alaska’s Inside Passage, which is a popular embarkation spot; however, it’s well worth taking a day to explore this destination either at the start or the end of your Alaska yacht charter holiday. The city is one of a handful in the world that has no direct road access to the world outside, making it truly unique. Highlights include the Juneau-Douglas City Museum and Alaska State Museum, both of which shine a spotlight on the region’s rich culture and heritage, the Last Chance Mining Museum, which explores Juneau’s Gold Rush history, and the Mt Roberts Tramway, which takes passengers 550m (1,800ft) above sea level, providing spectacular views.

Mendenhall Glacier

Access the Mendenhall Glacier via helicopter and explore its 13-mile-long river of ice. The Mendenhall Glacier is one of many major glaciers that connect to the vast Juneau Ice Field. There are several trails to explore, taking you past cascading waterfalls, salmon streams, and wild animals . The Mendenhall Glacier is also a great destination for enjoying a dog sledding experience.

Baranof Hot springs

Located in southern Alaska’s Chatham Strait, you’ll find nine natural hot springs near a cascading waterfall. Set amongst picturesque wild animals , these restorative hot springs sit at the end of a ¼ mile trek. The springs also feature a cold plunge pool to cool down quickly after a long soak.

Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory

The Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory is located in Tongass National Park, which also boasts the largest runs of pink salmon in Southeast Alaska – supporting the park’s high density of black and brown bears. The park includes several viewing platforms, while private guided tours are also available. Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory offers a rare opportunity to view endemic wild animals in their natural habitat, including bears, bald eagles, and harbor seals.

Frederick Sound

The striking Frederick Sound is surrounded by towering 9,842ft (3,000m) mountains, with its glacier-fed waters abundant with krill and herring, ensuring superb fishing opportunities. It’s also a great destination for observing humpback whales, who migrate to this area to feed on its nutrient-rich waters.

Northrop & Johnson can tailor a custom itinerary that includes your desired experiences. Contact our team of charter specialists today.

What wild animals can I expect to see from my Alaska charter boat?

Alaska’s rich wildlife is what makes an Alaska yacht charter so sought-after. Aboard an Alaskan yacht charter, you’ll have the opportunity to see a wide selection of ocean-dwelling marine mammals and land-based critters, including humpback whales, dolphins, seals, sea otters, walrus, bald eagles, falcons, snowy owls, hawks, brown and black bears, polar bears, wolves, moose and bison to name just a few.

What national parks are the best to visit when chartering in Alaska?

There are several national parks in Alaska, offering superb opportunities for wildlife viewing and outdoor pursuits. Some of the best national parks to explore during a yacht charter in Alaska include:

The Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve

The Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve cover 3.3 million acres of wilderness, including temperate rainforests, soaring glaciers, wild coastlines, and rugged mountains. The park is located in Alaska’s Inside Passage and is part of a 25 million-acre World Heritage Site. Cruise the coastline of this stunning national park or explore inland protected areas. Glacier Bay offers limitless opportunities for adventure.

The Denali National Park and Preserve

Covers six million acres of wild land spanning low-elevation taiga forest, high alpine tundra, and snowy mountains, including North America’s tallest peak, the 20,310ft (6,190m) Denali. Unfenced lands enable wild animals to roam free, ensuring superb opportunities for wild animal spotting. Enjoy outdoor pursuits in this pristine part of Alaska, or simply enjoy the park’s peace, tranquillity, and solitude.

The Kenai Fjords National Park

Located at the edge of the Kenai Peninsula, the Kenai Fjords National Park’s crowning feature is its 40 glaciers that flow from the Harding Icefield. Enjoy guided hiking trails through the park’s icy interior, or hop on a snowmobile for the ultimate adventure. The fjord is also a popular migratory passage with humpback whales who feed on its nutrient-rich waters.

The Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve

This vast national park spans 13.2 million acres, rising from the ocean to 18,008ft (5,488.8m). The landscape here is rugged and beautiful, marked by peak after peak and soaring glaciers. Wrangell Park is volcanic in origin; however, only Mount Wragness remains active, and steam vents can be seen near its summit. Historic mining sites pepper the park, providing a snapshot of the region’s history, while the park’s landscape offers a wealth of activities; hike, ski, or kayak, adventure is limited only by your imagination.

Katmai National Park and Preserve

The Katmai National Park and Preserve in the southwest of Alaska was established in 1918 and is an important habitat for salmon and thousands of brown bears. Indeed, the park is North America’s largest protected population of brown bears. The vast wilderness is rich in environmental influences, offering diverse natural flora and fauna to explore. The region has been inhabited for over 9,000 years and, as such, boasts a history that is uniquely intertwined with the landscape.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve

Shimmering turquoise lakes, steaming volcanoes, and craggy mountains personify Lake Clark National Park and Reserve. Not only does the park protect local wild animals , but it also preserves the ancestral homeland of the Dena’ina people. Crescent Lake, deep in the park’s wilderness, is considered one of the park’s most scenic locations and offers a wealth of experiences, including fishing, hiking, wild animal spotting, and kayaking.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Explore the Inside Passage on a Private Alaska Yacht Charter

The scenery in Alaska is unmatched. On Alaska yacht charters you can see ice-capped mountains surrounded by lush forests with rushing waterfalls cascading into the deep blue ocean waters. You can kayak to a clear mountain lake that is fed by a melting glacier.

Alaska’s best attraction is most definitely a natural one: the outdoors. You will see majestic creatures like black bears, grizzly bears, deer, and bald eagles. As your private boat glides through the water, keep your eyes peeled for signs of aquatic wildlife. You will be able to see a variety of whales, such as humpback whales and orcas. More commonly, while you’re aboard one of our luxury Alaska yacht charters, you might spot porpoises, harbor seals, sea lions, or sea otters.

Alaska is the Perfect Summer Yacht Charter Destination

Alaska holds major appeal for those looking to reserve a tour on a private boat rental, but its greatest shortcoming is its extreme weather, making charter season only a few months long – from mid-May through mid-September.

Summer temperatures are pleasant with highs generally between 55-78° Fahrenheit. Nights are comfortably cool as the temperatures drop to the 50s, meaning you can spend your evenings outdoors or on the deck of the yacht, but you will need a jacket.

Alaska Crewed Motor Yacht Charters

The best way to see Alaska is by chartering your own private motor yacht. A private boat cruise is the ultimate way to explore the Alaskan scenery, from breath-taking glaciers to abundant wildlife and marine life.

If you wish to avoid crowds and spend a fun time full of adventures, let our charter brokers prepare a customize yachting package for you and your family.

Most of the available crewed motor yachts in Alaska are available out of Juneau and Sitka. Be prepared to experience an adventure of a lifetime!

A boat and a glacier in Alaska

The Inside Passage runs from Juneau and Glacier Bay in the north to Ketchikan in the south and puts on a dazzling display of ice.

The coastal mountain ranges and islands of the Inside Passage offer opportunities for fishing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, and hiking.

Tracy Arm Fjord About 70 miles south of Juneau, you’ll find Tracy Arm Fjord, a narrow, inlet with towering, craggy walls. The fjord is fascinating all by itself, with waterfalls and national protected forests along the way. If you’re lucky, you might see a black or brown bear, harbor seals, or wolves in the adjacent Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness.

But the real reason to visit is the fjord’s glaciers. Tracy Arm is home to some of Alaska’s most photogenic glaciers, including Sawyer Glacier. Sawyer is an active tidewater glacier – which means large chunks “calve” off. And when you see it up close, you’ll have the chance to witness one of these massive bergs breaking off and crashing to the sea below, as it’s known to calf regularly.

Glacier National Park If you’re in search of glaciers, you’ll find plenty in Glacier Bay National Park. Located north of Juneau, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers many spectacular sights to see, including 7 active tidewater glaciers.

Glacier Bay is home to some of Alaska’s largest active glaciers. Grand Pacific Glacier – for instance – sits at the back coast of the bay. It measures two miles wide, with ice walls towering 15 stories. Grand Pacific’s neighbor, Margerie Glacier, though, is the star of the show.

Margerie Glacier is majestic, so no wonder it is a must-see sight for many charter boats. With an ice face measuring 25 stories tall, watching the glacier drop ice into the bay will take your breath away. Beyond the glaciers, the National Park is also an incredible spot for whale-watching, kayaking, and other water sports.

Juneau Juneau is Alaska’s state capital and one of the most beautiful cities in the state. The city can only be reached by airplane or boat, there is no road access. Juneau is the perfect base for starting your Alaska yacht charter.

You can’t visit Juneau without a trip to Mendenhall Glacier. Located just 10 miles from downtown Juneau, the glacier is part of the Juneau Icefield, a photographic panorama of steel blue ice that’s been here since the last Ice Age. More on Juneau .

Sitka Sitka is located on the outer coast of Alaska’s Inside Passage and lies at the heart of the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rain forest in the world.   More on Sitka

Ketchikan Ketchikan, a lively fishing and logging community, is located in the southernmost city on the Inside Passage. Also called the “Salmon Capital of the World”, Ketchikan is known for fishing, beautiful scenery, and rich Native culture. More on Ketchikan

Hubbard Glacier Hubbard Glacier – north of Glacier Bay – is North America’s largest tidewater glacier. This is a massive giant you have to see to believe. Measuring 6+ miles wide, the glacier is continuing to grow, or “surge,” and Hubbard towers 40 stories tall.

Hubbard is also one of the most beautiful glaciers in Alaska, with jade blue and frozen sapphire hues. Not only does it wow with its vastness – it’s also a treasure to see up close. The Disenchantment Bay and journey into the fjord put on a show of wildlife. The fjord is home to seal and whale populations, and the region is well-known for its fishing.

Private yachts offer flexible itineraries, based on guests’ preferences. Here are samples of two popular charter routes:

  • Juneau to Juneau itinerary
  • Juneau to Sitka itinerary

The Alaska Bucket List

Whale watching in Alaska

You can find eight species of whales in the Alaskan waters. Some of the species live in the waters year-round, and some migrate to Alaska in the summer. The most common whales that you will see in Alaska are the Orca and humpback whales . More on whale watching in Alaska .

Seeing a Glacier Up Close and Personal

Most of the time yacht rental vacations include warm tropical waters, but this time around you’re in for something completely different. Nothing is more magical than cruising past towering glaciers while icebergs float on the water and chunks of frozen water crash into the sea below.

Inside Passage glacier, a yacht charter will bring you past walls of ice, stunning waterfalls, and wildlife sunning on floating chunks of ice as they take a break from splashing around. Bottom line, if you fancy yourself an explorer, chartering a yacht in Alaska will let you live your dreams.

Seeing Amazing Wildlife

Cruise through ancient forests and see wildlife in its natural habitat. Look for majestic creatures like black bears, grizzly bears, deer, and bald eagles on land. As your private yacht glides through the water, keep your binoculars ready in anticipation of spotting giant brown bears. Or, you may spy a black bear picking berries from a bush or a gracious moose ambling to the water for a drink.

Guide to Alaska

Experience the haunting allure of the intriguing ice age

From snow-capped mountains to intriguing totem poles, Alaska is brimming with astounding natural beauty and a plethora of unforgettable sights. Although you might imagine bitterly cold winds, prowling wildlife and towering glaciers in reality Alaska offers much more as well as a whole host of surprises.

This dazzling remote location is unparalleled in haunting beauty and is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing sailing destinations in the world. A yacht charter vacation to Alaska is the ultimate way to explore, as much of Alaska’s phenomenal coastline is inaccessible by road. Alaska offers a startling contrast to the popular cruising grounds of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean whilst remaining unmatched in beauty and outstanding grandeur. Intrepid travellers, lovers of the outdoors and nature enthusiasts will adore Alaska and charter yachts to this vast and solitary destination will be required to be durable and able to sustain glacial waters.

The capital of Juneau, located in the southeast of Alaska, is a town steeped in beauty and full of character. Inaccessible by road, this stunning town is perfect for exploring by yacht. Admire the awe-inspiring vistas of a town framed by tumbling hills, labyrinthine streets and thick forestation. South of Juneau lies the wonderful town of Ketchikan. Synonymous with the Alaskan totem poles, Ketchikan is brimmed with an array of carved wooden wonders and is the ultimate place to view the world’s largest collection which can be easily found as you meander around the town. To further experience the allure of the famous totem poles, visit the Totem Heritage Centre which is home to original and restored carvings which were rescued from abandoned native villages.

The world renowned Inside Passage is home to a myriad of breathtaking sights. From beautiful sunsets to a garden of glittering glaciers, this scenic stretch is a must visit on any yacht charter to Alaska. Entrenched with fjords, forests, mountains and elusive wildlife, nowhere in the world epitomises beauty quite like Alaska. Whilst visiting the Inside Passage, do not miss Admiralty Island where the world’s largest concentration of brown bears can be found in addition to the largest National Park in America .

Weather can be unpredictable here with no guarantees of seeing everything you might hope to when it comes to whale watching and wildlife spotting, though there is no doubt Alaska is home to an array of treasures. Keep your eyes peeled for frolicking humpbacks and pods of Orca plus on land creatures such as wolves, bears, eagles and moose. With opportunities for kayaking through icebergs, hiking through forests and traversing mountains, Alaska offers an abundance of unforgettable experiences, making it one of the most enticing upcoming charter destinations.

Alaska Yacht Charters

Let us steer you to a trusted, quality Alaska yacht charter—your own private cruise in the Last Frontier. All our overnight Alaska yacht charters are fully crewed and include guided exploration of Alaska’s wilderness. We are a team of award-winning small Alaska cruise specialists who helped pioneer adventure cruising in Alaska; let our expertise and firsthand experience be your guide for planning custom Alaska cruises.

We offer the largest selection of Alaska charter boats carrying 8 to 100 travelers, and have curated the ships listed below (8- to 36-guest vessels) for our charter clients. From the Inside Passage and Prince William Sound, to sailings along the coast to Seattle, our custom private Alaska cruise options show you the state at its best.

Types of Alaska Charter Cruises

Design your own experience of North America’s premier wilderness. Our selection of Alaska yacht charters is curated with the best Alaska charter boats providing unparalleled access to remote wilderness areas as well as the highest level of safety and comfort. Craft your own private Alaska cruise to enjoy active exploration on naturalist-led shore hikes, sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and even snorkeling on select ships. Perhaps you’re seeking an Alaska luxury cruise or looking for the best Alaska cruise for families . Whatever your travel preference, we can accommodate.

Where Alaska Charter Boats Can Sail

Our Alaska charter boats are primarily based in the Inside Passage , including Glacier Bay cruises , but we have private boat options in Prince William Sound, along the remote coastlines of Katmai National Park and sailing up from Seattle. On a private Alaska cruise ship, you can help set the route, but certain vessels are best equipped and staffed for certain areas. And note that our Alaska charter cruises are all overnight, no day-only bookings.

AdventureSmith’s team of experts can work with you to plan which Alaska charter boat works best for your group. We have everything from popular Juneau yacht charters to sailings out of Ketchikan, Sitka, Whittier or Cordova.

WORK ONE-ON-ONE

We’ve planned hundreds of charters. Let us help you find your match.

Deals on Alaska Yacht Charters

How to get the best deal on Alaska charter cruises? Booking early is a must to secure vessels for charter space, but booking a charter often equals significant per-person discounts off standard cabin rates. Our experts know the nuances and span of private Alaska cruise options in the region and can link you to the latest Alaska yacht charter discounts. View our  Alaska cruise deals  to see what’s currently on sale.

Alaska Yacht Charter Rates

A full-boat charter has many advantages over an independently booked cruise, price being a big advantage in addition to exclusivity and flexibility. The trips listed on our website show rates per person, for travelers booking individual staterooms on prescheduled departures. But when you book a full Alaska yacht charter, each person will save 10 to 30% off these regular per-person cruise rates.

Alaska yacht charters are typically planned and contracted at least one year in advance of the cruise departure date, but as long as space is available charter yachts in Alaska can still be secured. Charter rates vary by destination, season and availability. Off-season Alaskan yacht charters garner the greatest savings while high-season dates should be secured a year or more in advance. To get a jump-start on charter research, read our 7-step guide How to Charter a Yacht then consult our Alaska yacht charter specialists for the ultimate guidance.

Charter Terms & Conditions

Terms and conditions are sometimes more strict with Alaska charter cruises (and a charter anywhere, for that matter) than they are for individual bookings. Expect to pay a charter rate that remains the same, whether or not you have enough travelers to fill all the staterooms. Cancellation terms usually require a nonrefundable deposit and payments as the cruise date approaches. Some Alaska charter boats require that one person be responsible for signing the charter agreement. Group travel insurance policies are highly recommended when considering a private Alaska cruise. Our experts will work with you and your group to make the charter process seamless and transparent.

Combine Your Private Alaska Cruise with Land

Complement your Alaska yacht charter with time on land, or plan a custom adventure based at a wilderness lodge. We offer scenic locations, authentic cuisine and unique lodge access by way of floatplane, helicopter, raft or boat. Visit Denali National Park as few visitors do, stay at the only lodge within Kenai Fjords National Park or opt to arrive to the most remote of lodges in true Alaska style—by floatplane. View all of our Alaska land tours to find a good fit for your interests.

Customizing Your Alaska Yacht Charter

If you are interested in larger vessels, private group departures and/or private stays at wilderness lodges, visit our Alaska trips  page. Additional Alaska charter boats may be available for your dates, so contact us for the most up-to-date options for custom Alaska cruises. As each private Alaska cruise can be customized to your needs, contact one of our experts to explore each ship’s charter options more in detail.

What Our Visitors Have Said

What an amazing experience we had aboard the Sea Mist. It was truly a once in a lifetime trip! From the moment we stepped on board Jeff and Kate were warm and inviting hosts. The boat is clean and spacious while offering great spaces to get comfortable while aboard. We anchored in a cove where we saw tons of wildlife including a brown bear which was amazing. The food was outstanding and we regret not staying longer. This is a TRUE Alaska experience and we will be back to do it again.

THANK YOU!!!

Once in a lifetime and a one of a kind experience! Everything was absolutely incredible.

Words can’t describe and pictures hardly do justice. Everything was perfect from the moment we were met at the dock. Chef Suzette wowed us at every meal with her fresh culinary creations. Dining while watching glaciers calving and waterfowl dancing in the waterfalls were breathtaking. Captain Jeff is a fabulous host. Very in tune with his guests and what will provide their best Alaskan adventure. Whether you are looking to unwind and reflect on the wonder that is Alaska or seeking a more active itinerary, Captain Jeff and Alaskan Luxury Cruises delivers!

By far, this has been one of my favorite vacations. When planning our trip, I had no idea of the level of exceptional customer service we were going to receive. Captain Jeff, Kate and Chef Zach went OVER AND ABOVE WHAT WE EXPECTED. They did a wonderful job of making us feel at home. Five stars isn’t enough to give the crew of The Sea Mist.

The Sea Mist brings a new level of luxury to vacation. This trip is not your average trip, this experience will fill a spot in your soul that will linger with you for the rest of your days. That is rare to find in any vacation and rare to find in life.

Jen, Ogden, Utah

From the moment we stepped foot on the boat on a gloriously sunny day in Whittier until we stepped off a few days later, we were treated to amazing views, food, and activities. Captain Jeff has been on Prince William Sound for many years and put together an excellent itinerary for the interests of our groups, from hiking to kayaking to glacier viewing, everything was perfect for us

The beauty of the Sea Mist perfectly complemented the beauty surrounding us. She’s a beautiful custom yacht full of wide open spaces that are unexpected for a boat. Every detail is immaculate. There wasn’t enough time to truly enjoy all the comfortable seating areas around the boat. While the Sea Mist could likely comfortably carry 20+ people, the small, private group made us feel like royalty. In addition, the smoothness of the ride aboard the Sea Mist is unparalleled. We never felt like we were out on the water. This would be the perfect trip for anyone who otherwise struggles with seasickness.

I cannot rave enough about Alaskan Luxury Cruises. For this being my first time visiting Alaska, the experience was more amazing than I imagined. The whole crew on the Sea Mist were so hospitable and warm and welcoming. Kate did a fantastic job of making sure we were taken care of. And chef Dave made every meal with so much thought. I highly recommend booking the Sea Mist for a luxury Alaskan adventure.

How to sail the Alaska Marine Highway

From choosing routes to buying tickets, we can answer all your questions about traveling on the Alaska Marine Highway System © FloridaStock / Shutterstock

Traveling aboard an Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) – the ferry network that connects Alaska 's coastal communities – offers the same views as the cruise ships, but without the fluff.

Passengers see glimpses of glaciers, wildlife, lush forests, but also meet the residents that rely upon ferries to get them to and from other places. To really understand what it’s like to live in rural Alaska and see amazing places without the huge price tag, this is the way to travel.

Ferry travel requires advance planning and execution, as the Alaska Marine Highway System is a designated All-American Road , the first waterway to be named such, and its 3500-mile scenic byway is popular with independent travelers and their cars, RVs, bicycles and motorcycles.

What is the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS)?

Known fondly as the "blue canoes" by residents, the state-owned and operated ferries of the AMHS are integral to basic living and commerce for coastal communities of the state. Moving among three coastal regions, Southeast, Southcentral, and Southwest, the Alaska Marine Highway’s fleet of vessels transport people and goods over a 30-route system that also provides visitors with a unique experience that truly emulates the Alaska lifestyle.

First launched in 1948 as a small marine transport founded by two brothers who saw a need to help get residents and products between the small towns of Haines, Skagway , and Tee Harbor in Southeast Alaska , the ferry system of today didn’t become a state entity until 1963. Then, the newly launched MV Malaspina arrived in Ketchikan to much fanfare because, as one resident said, “We could finally go somewhere!”

Not ready for the ferry? Here are some other ways to travel around in Alaska

Which are the best routes on the AMHS?

Alaska Marine Highway routes vary in distance and length, from a few hours to several days, depending upon the communities served. Looking for a snapshot of Alaska’s coastal regions with plenty of activities and stunning scenery? The following itineraries are a great trip to tack on to land-based travel, or as a full vacation in themselves.

Kayakers in a bay surrounded by icebergs

Route 1: Whittier to Valdez (Southcentral)

The fishing industry is one of Alaska’s top economic engines, so traveling Prince William Sound during the summer months means a front-row seat to the vessels and people working nets and lines. This five-hour trip sails among the placid bays and craggy coves of the sound, with the stunning Chugach National Forest as a backdrop. Popular because of its sail-drive connection via the Richardson and Glenn Highways between Anchorage , Whittier, and Fairbanks , this a wonderful route for those looking for a round-trip journey. Watch for fishing boats, kayakers camping on the shoreline, and "bergy bits" from massive Columbia Glacier as you get closer to Valdez , then stay overnight in town before hitting the road north or west.

Once you arrive in Valdez, make sure to stop at the Valdez Museum  for a dive into area history, including events like a 9.2 earthquake in 1964 and the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989. Old Town Valdez is the former downtown district prior to the 1964 quake, when a tsunami destroyed nearly every building and the entire community relocated to its current site. A few miles out of town, Solomon Gulch Hatchery  is a great place to watch sea lions and the occasional brown or black bear fishing for pink salmon returning to the hatchery. A glacier and wildlife cruise departing from the Valdez harbor can provide up close views of these rivers of ice, and whales cavorting in Prince William Sound.

Route 2: Juneau to Haines (Southeast)

Departing from Auke Bay a short distance from downtown Juneau , the sail to Haines is just under four hours and is a frequently traveled route by residents going back and forth for shopping, appointments or sports contests. Look for whales, seals and eagles as you move along the Inside Passage’s most northern section before turning into scenic Lynn Canal. Haines itself is a quaint little town that happens to be located a mere 45 miles from the Canadian border, and is one of few Southeast Alaska communities that is accessible by road, water and air. Unlike neighboring Skagway (just 20 more miles up Chilkoot Inlet from Haines), Haines has resisted the tourist trappings of a cruise ship port city, and visitors wanting to hike, paddle or experience museums and cultural centers without heavy crowds will enjoy this destination.

Haines is also a great jumping-off city for road tripping into Canada 's  Yukon Territory and then back into Alaska via the famous Alaska Highway (or AlCan). Note that a passport is required for the multiple border crossings.

Route 3: Homer to Dutch Harbor (Southwest)

This is the route for serious adventurers who want to explore remote coastal Alaska. The unique Southwest route begins in the small town of Homer at the end of Southcentral Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. Located just over 200 miles south of Anchorage (about a five-hour drive), Homer is known for its thriving halibut fishing and access to a plethora of hiking and camping across scenic Kachemak Bay.

Typically, the ferry departs in the evening for an overnight Gulf of Alaska crossing, arriving in Kodiak city on Kodiak Island early the following morning. From Kodiak, the ferry proceeds across Shelikof Strait toward the Alaska Peninsula before reaching the Aleutian Islands . Often, travelers can see steam rising from one of the many active volcanoes in the region, and the occasional whale spouting off in the distance.

Planning your trip to Alaska? Here's our seasonal guide to help you choose the best time for your visit

How do I book a ferry trip?

The easiest way to book an Alaska Marine Highway trip is online . The website is run by the State of Alaska and has its kinks, but reservation agents are very helpful on the phone (1-800-642-0066). If you choose a multiday sailing, like to Dutch Harbor, a stateroom is much desired over sleeping in the main common areas or on deck. Reserve these as far in advance as possible, however, as they sell out quickly.

If the idea of sleeping al fresco on deck sounds like an Alaska-themed must-do adventure, pay attention to posted placards letting passengers know where they may and may not sleep outside. Small tents are permitted to be pitched on some decks, but it is imperative they be secured with duct tape to keep them from blowing away during the trip. Deck lounge chairs under heat lamps in the solarium spaces may be accessible to overnighters as well, but not every ferry has them. Use lockers inside common areas for stashing valuables, as gear will be open to both the elements and other people otherwise.

When do tickets become available?

The Alaska Marine Highway System releases its summer schedule in early spring each year, and tickets for popular Southeast and Southwest routes are at a premium. A good strategy is to follow the AMHS on social media channels and check the website frequently. Be as flexible with travel dates as possible as well, since long weekends and holidays are extremely busy.

Need more inspiration? Here are the best things to do in Alaska

What do I pack? What can I bring on board?

  • Personal food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted in the cafeteria area. Bring a cooler for perishable items. Alcohol is permitted only in staterooms.
  • Bring warm clothing and rain gear to spend ample time outdoors on deck. Non-slip shoes are a must for wet surfaces.
  • Pack binoculars to spot whales and other wildlife. Ferry crew usually announce when animals or birds are seen.
  • Do not forget government-issued ID, charging cords, and cash or credit cards to purchase food and other items on board.

What's it like on board?

The Alaska Marine Highway System ferries are very busy in the summer months, with passengers staking claims in all common areas for the duration of a trip. If you do not reserve a stateroom, bring coins for lockers to secure valuables and jump into the spirit of independent travel.

Make time to dine in the vessel’s cafeteria and meet other travelers, for this is an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with life in coastal Alaska. Consider bringing your own water bottle, mug for coffee or tea, and snacks/camp-style meals if you are on a multiday itinerary.

The Alaska Marine Highway System has a complete list of things to know and travel policies on its website .

Man stranded in boat after running aground in Ocean Park

OCEAN PARK Wash. (KPTV) - A week after a boat washed ashore in Ocean Park, it remains stuck and sitting in the sand.

The owner, who has stayed with the boat, said he has been waiting for the right opportunity to get back into the water.

Michael Bonome is the boat’s captain and said he was trying to get away from the world when he got on his boat last week. However, when he ended up aground, he ran into a community that refused to let him go through it alone.

“It’s not a bad situation,” he said. “I’m on a beach. The weather’s nice. It turned into a blessing.”

Bonome called the vessel his “bug-out boat.” After trying the vessel out numerous times on lakes and rivers, he took it into the ocean for the first-time last week.

“I decided to take the risk and see how the boat handles,” Bonome said.

He said conditions were getting bad and he was deciding if it might be wise to turn around because “the waves were getting pretty big and scary.”

Things would take a turn for the worst when the radiator hoses in the engine blew and the boat began overheating.

“The cab started smoking inside while I was fighting these big waves coming up on me,” he said. “Then I could hear the engine was about to bog out and it shut off on me.”

As the inside of the boat was filling with smoke, he poked his head out for air. He said that’s when he thought it would be a good idea to drop the anchor, but when he made his way to the back, he saw his dog had fallen into the water. He jumped in after his pet.

“An even bigger wave came and hit me,” he said. “Knocked me in. Now, I’m in there swimming for my life.”

Miraculously, he would be able to grab onto the boat and ride it ashore. He quickly realized he was freezing.

“I felt like I was going into shock,” Bonome said. “I went inside to get my clothes off as fast I could.”

In the panic and looking around, he said he was met with open arms. He found a community witnessing his troubles at sea, who were eager to step up and help.

“With the power of love from God, there was a community of people here waiting to help me,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

He said an ambulance was on stand-by and ready to help. He watched as someone rescued his dog too. All the while, he said others were picking up things that had fallen out of his boat.

“It took a bad situation and turned it into a good one,” he said. History is being made, for me anyway. The love that is outpouring is overwhelming.”

Bonome said the community is trying to help get him back into the water. While the tides have been close, they haven’t been close enough to get his boat back in.

In the meantime, he said he’s unable to leave the boat or it could be considered abandoned. Until it’s figured out, he’ll be hanging out with his newfound friends and counting his blessings.

“Nobody’s hurt,” he said. “My dog is alive. It’s literally a miracle.”

If the tides won’t get his boat back in, he said some people have brought up the idea of getting a crane involved.

The Long Beach community has set up a GoFundMe for him to help get his boat back into the ocean.

Shark species that may be world’s ‘largest predatory fish’ is a rare sight, NOAA says

A mysterious shark that may count as the world’s largest predatory fish appears to be in decline off the U.S., prompting a rush to gather as much information as possible about the secretive species, NOAA Fisheries says.

So little is known about Pacific sleeper sharks that experts don’t know how many exist, the extent of their movements or how they reproduce, according to a newly published study.

“Adult Pacific sleeper sharks are rarely encountered. No pregnant female has ever been retained,” NOAA Fisheries reported in an April 15 news release.

“This has led scientists to believe that mature sharks may live in abyssal habitats, 3000-6000 meters deep (9,842 feet to 19,585 feet). Very large sharks — up to an estimated 23 feet — have been caught on submersible cameras at great depths. None larger than 14 feet has ever been measured from fishing or survey vessels.”

Even larger examples of nearly 25 feet have been caught outside of Alaska’s waters, NOAA says.

Pacific sleeper sharks are most often encountered as bycatch in the nets of Alaska’s commercial fisheries, and few survive the trauma, experts say. They’re considered “the most vulnerable of all managed fish stocks in Alaska waters,” yet no management plan exists.

“We still know little about even its most basic biology,” NOAA Fisheries research biologist Beth Matta said in the release. “We can’t manage what we don’t understand.”

The new NOAA Fisheries study, published April 14 , is a first step toward finding answers. It includes everything known or suspected about the species, including details found in century-old writings, officials said.

Among the known details: Pacific sleeper sharks are slow to grow, which means they mature later and have a long lifespan.

Just how long they live is not yet known, but a 35-year-old female studied by scientists proved to be immature, indicating “not only extreme longevity, but also delayed maturity,” study coauthor Cindy Tribuzio said in the NOAA release.

The study has also revealed trends: Fewer Pacific sleeper sharks have been found off Alaska and Taiwan, while more have been seen in Russian waters, officials said.

There is growing evidence of a “critical nursery habitat for Pacific sleeper sharks in the Bering Sea,” where aggregations of younger sibling sharks have been discovered, officials said.

As for what they eat, it’s suspected smaller ones scavenge “ on whatever falls to the bottom of the sea,” while larger Pacific sleeper sharks may prey on marine mammals, including Steller sea lions that reach 11 feet in length and 2,500 pounds.

“With the information we compiled in this study, we were able to demonstrate the need to prioritize Pacific sleeper shark assessment efforts,” Tribuzio said.

“And that we need to think out of the box on how to manage this species given its vulnerability and challenges to assessing it.”
