NORTHPORT YACHT CLUB
HISTORY & TRADITION
On July 4, 1899, The Northport Yacht Club was launched on Bayview Avenue by Stanton Street. The Club was started by wealthy gentlemen who worked in New York and had second homes in the area.
Three weeks later, on July 22nd, the The Independent Yacht Club got going on Woodbine Ave. (right next to the Marina). The Independent started out as a local club for merchants and town folk. Its charter members were local businessmen: Burr, Scudder, Sammis, Seymor and Fox.
By October 1925 The Northport Yacht Club called it quits and auctioned off their property for $18,400. Two years later, on Dec. 24th, 1927, the Independent Yacht Club changed its name to The Northport Yacht Club, but by 1944 the Club was suffering financially as WW II began and had to close its doors and sell off its property.
A year later a serious sailor named Ben Gambee needed to become a member of a yacht club in order to race. Northport had no clubs so he started the Edgewater Yacht Club in May 1945. It was a paper club. Members met in Ben’s home. Dick Steers was a member and also owned the sand and gravel company. He offered the fledgling club the property we are currently on for about $4,000.
By 1948 a new clubhouse was built and there were about 125 members. In 1952 the charter of the defunct Northport Yacht Club lapsed and the Secretary of New York State notified the Edgewater Club members that the name could be theirs. So, in 1952 the new Northport Yacht Club came into being and exists to this day.

So, Here's the Scoop: invited to a luncheon here today. The view from your table are all fabulous water views. Service is prompt and food served hot. Waiters & waitresses are courteous and willing to please. Bathroom is clean and loaded with hand towels and soap. Lobby is inviting and warm. Nice bar and large screen tv. Boating pictures decorate the Walls throughout. Windows surround the dining room which is why beautiful views of the water can be seen from any table. Lovely place to come for lunch. Check this place out if you're in the area.
Here on a somber occasion to bid farewell to one of a kind person, the best family guy, a cousin via marriage, and friend countless others; Heiko F. I was told this was Heiko's favorite place and so the family decided to honor him with a luncheon. The service and buffet were outstanding. The view if the Harbor leading out into the Long Island Sound priceless. Honestly, if I lived closer I would have the gumption to join. From my brief experience, fellow members seemed family oriented and down to earth. I could easily see why this was Heiko's favorite place having been such a loving family man. Thank you Northport Yacht Club and loved ones for hosting this memorable occasion... ...Prost to Heiko!
Northport yacht club sits on the water in Northport I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to show any photos but if you ever get the opportunity to see it it's unbelievable. The walls are lined with pictures of old nostalgic sailors and events that they had from years past. I was there for a military function so I couldn't show any photos but if you ever get a chance to partake in a event there don't pass it up. The service was first class the maître d' , made sure that everything was cookie cutter perfect. As soon as you would put your water glass down the maître d' would snap their fingers and someone would come and Re-fill it. I was involved in the ceremony so I didn't get a chance to take photos but the food was out of this world. If you should ever get a chance to go to Northport yacht club make sure that you do.
You have a beautiful view while you are eating. The food portions are huge so make sure you go hungry. They make every effort to have you enjoy the meal. If you are not happy they fix it until you are happy.
Seriously a great place to moor and spend the weekend. Staff and facilities are super. The town is lovely as well.
