Revisiting Maple Bay

Make this resilient full-service marina a part of your cruising ritual.

We’re just under the power lines heading south from Stuart Channel when we catch the wind frolicking up from Burgoyne Bay on Salt Spring Island. A common afternoon wind direction, it often gives us a thrilling sail for the last 15 minutes of our trip to Maple Bay. We’re doing almost six knots in our C&C 25 as we zoom past Paddy Mile Stone as the bay narrows and bends southward into Birds Eye Cove, but we’re running out of sea. Tempting as it is to consider heading back into the wind for an exhilarating beat to prolong our sail today, it’s just a tad more tempting to hand our lines over to the friendly staff at Maple Bay Marina and kick back for the rest of the day at one of our favourite destinations.

AFTER THE STORM

Maple Bay is a destination that took one hell of a wallop from Mother Nature less than two years ago, when fierce winds rampaged the coast on December 20, 2018. “It’s known as being one of the most protected bays in the whole North American coast,” says David Messier, who along with his wife, Carol, owns and manages the marina. “But nevertheless, that day the winds peaked at 129 kilometres an hour. We have never gone through a storm like that one and BC Hydro says they hadn’t either.”

It was a day they never want to relive. They witnessed a marine rescue when two of the marina’s float homes were snatched away from their tethers and started bouncing toward wilder waters. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) was called in and the homes had drifted across the bay before the relieved occupants in one and the dogs in another were taken aboard by the Coast Guard around 11:30.

“One float home was in the process of being connected and the moorings simply broke on it. We caught it as it was going past the fuel dock but then it ripped off the dock and carried on across the bay. The damage was unbelievable. The float home dock needed all the piles re-driven. All the concrete docks needed to be repaired. We had to completely rebuild the fuel system—all of the fuel lines and the entire gas dock. The floats were reconstructed. Two thirds of G dock was completely rebuilt; half of I dock is still missing and A dock is gone, so we are still very much in the process of rebuilding. The entire roof was torn off this building.” He points to the large picture window behind him. “It was blown out and shattered. You can still see the water damage in here. Huge trees came down on the property. Power systems were ripped out of docks.” A shadow passes in front of his face. “It’s really hard to go back to that time and you try your best not to remember it because it was so traumatic. Lots of smashed up docks and boats tossed about and boat sheds lifted right out of the water and then smashed down. The volume of debris collected from the water filled 26 large containers. The winds and the high tide combined to put us in a real bad spot.”

Looking at photos we could see how bad it had been. The scenario was devastating.

But phoenix-like, they have recovered, and today things are looking brighter and busier as Carol arrives to take our lines and gives us a welcoming smile on our mid-September mini cruise. They have both been very grateful to the partners surrounding them and attribute much of their successful rising from the storm to the assistance they received. “2019 was a pretty challenging year, so for us to be able to rise from that is very much tied to the partners we work with; companies like Harbour Air, The Georgia Strait Alliance, Columbia Fuels, our local government, Appleby Electric, the District of North Cowichan and Search and Rescue. All of them contributed to help us succeed in putting everything back together again. It’s the partnerships that have allowed us to become successful. We’re a community down here.”

That disastrous wind notwithstanding, Maple Bay, on Vancouver Island’s southeast flank between Cowichan Bay to the south and Chemainus to the north, has had a lot going for it since the marina first opened in 1945. We first visited in our 23-foot Crown in 1980, when moorage was offered at $10 per night, the shipyard was operating, the Mai Tai restaurant was a decade away from burning down and the marina had the cleanest and best-equipped washrooms and laundry we had ever seen. It still does. We call it our “one shop stop” as it really has everything we could need snugged into one space: The Shipyard Restaurant & Pub, which offers live music to munch to on Friday nights; and the Mariners Market & Espresso Bar, which has a variety of art and crafts on offer as well as great coffee, baking, ice cream and the best book swap ashore. The fuel dock has gasoline and diesel as well as a pump-out, added two years ago, a chandlery, a yacht broker and a boatyard with a 50-ton travelift and mechanics and shipwrights who were only too happy to squeeze us in two summers ago when our C&C developed a problem. The marina has Internet; 15, 30 and 50-amp power; water; garbage and a hazardous waste disposal. The covered patio and barbecue area are great for get togethers or just relaxing. Harbour Air has regular flights to and from Vancouver and Salt Spring Island and for those whose travels might involve a golf course, the Duncan Farmers Market or a visit to the Raptor Centre, a shuttle service is available, operating from March until the end of October. For those wanting a more up close and personal experience, kayaks can also be rented. The marina, which claims to be the largest marina north of Sidney, has also been awarded the highest Five Anchor Clean Marine rating from the Georgia Strait Alliance.

The narrow seven-kilometre scenic road that ends at Genoa Bay is great for cycling or just taking a long walk, but if skippers and crew prefer their walks more vertical, there’s hiking too with inviting trails very close at foot. Mount Tzouhalem, Maple Mountain and Stoney Hill are all nearby. You can pick up trail maps at the marina office.

Once our boat is secured I jump in the dinghy and row behind tiny Chisholm Island. This tidal flat, tucked away from passing traffic, is perfect for idling away sunny hours afloat on the placid waters, or swimming in the soupy warm brine if the day is hot, or sipping a cool one. It’s warm today, but not warm enough to tempt me over the side this close to happy hour aboard Aquila. For boaters with overloaded boats or for those just wanting a different sort of holiday and a break from the boat, some of the float homes here can be rented for two-night minimum stays. And no worries, the homes are definitely staying put this time around.

If anchoring in Birds Eye Cove or in Maple Bay, skippers might like to take their powered tenders over to the public wharf on the bay’s west side to enjoy the village’s offerings. There’s no question that the Scottish pub here is a big attraction, but on a hot day there is no better place to have a swim than off the public beach here. Just look for the swimming dock. There are toilets and change rooms nearby in a snug little park with picnic tables and benches, and there is always a plethora of locals here on a sunny day. Children love paddling in the shallow clear waters, trying for shiners off the dock, playing on the beach or collecting shells. We can have a refreshing dip on a hot day, dry off in the sun on the beach and then quench our thirst on the waterfront deck at the pub. It doesn’t get much better. The wee village has a tiny commercial heart: an outdoor adventure company, the Sea Cadets building and a rowing club, but I don’t think it minded having been passed over as the Cowichan Valley’s commercial hub. By the way, if you’re out of reading material, there is a tiny book bin outside the building. Skippers and crew considering a pub meal here will be happy to know that the pub operates a shuttle service on Fridays so that boaters from the yacht club or marina can come for dinner and the Friday night entertainment.

And divers will be very happy to know that Jacques Cousteau, who considered Maple Bay one of his favourite diving locations on the Pacific Coast, was enamored by the clear waters of Maple Bay.

Maple Bay and Birds Eye Cove were given their names by Captain Richards of the Royal Navy when he was surveying for the British Admiralty in 1858 and 1859, but well before then it was home to the Salish people, who called it Klup-nitz (deep water).

Shortly after Richards’ first visit, Maple Bay was the site of a definitive battle between the Salish tribes and the invading Kwakiutl. Tired of the Kwakiutl’s annual raids on their village, warriors from the other Salish tribes: Cowichan, Malahat, Songhee, Saanich and Sooke, all joined together in a concentrated effort to defeat the invaders who inevitably arrived every summer. They hid their canoes in the trees around Maple Bay and when scouts announced the enemy was approaching, they sent out three canoes with warriors disguised as women to lure the Kwakiutl into the bay. Soon the pursuers were the pursued as they found themselves surprised by the surrounding Salish canoes. It’s said that the battle went on for four days and nights with not one Kwakiutl warrior surviving

Ensuing surprise attacks on their enemies at settlements in Alert Bay and Cape Mudge made sure that the vanquished Kwakiutl never again raided the settlements of the Salish.

But the visit of Captain Richards’ survey ship foretold a new challenge for the Salish. With no roads or railways yet established, Maple and Cowichan bays became the entry points to the lush Cowichan Valley and many settlers began to arrive. Soon a public wharf appeared at its current location, a steamer from Victoria visited every two weeks and a store and inn were built at the wharf’s head.

The area was soon surveyed for a town site, prompting entrepreneur William Beaumont to buy the store and inn from its original owner, Tom Windsor, a few years later. Beaumont had plans of developing a town here but the construction of an island railway soon afterward seriously diminished the importance of a port. Plans for Maple Bay becoming the Cowichan Valley’s commercial heart were deep-sixed.

Nevertheless, the lure of the bay and its surroundings did not go unnoticed. Homes, farms, a hotel and a trading company were established and Windsor’s original inn became a private residence until it was sadly demolished around 1960.

Chisholm, that little island in front of the lagoon, which is sometimes referred to as Hidden Cove, was named after William Chisholm, an early settler whose farm at the head of the cove remained in the family for over a century before being sold.

The boulder whimsically called Paddy Mile Stone was actually named Boulder Point until the early 1900s, eventually changing to its new name on the Canadian Hydrographic charts in 1945. No one is certain how the name change came about although the venerable late nautical writer, Bill Wolferstan suggests in his Cruising Guide to British Columbia, Vol. 1 that it might have been named after a huge granite mass in Scotland, Ailsa Crag, which became known to locals there as Paddy’s Mile Stone because of its equidistant location in the Firth of Clyde between Belfast and Glasgow.

The marina has been a protected harbour for boaters since 1924 and not surprisingly has had a series of owners. Back in the 1970s it was owned by three brothers: John, Leif and Arnie Bentzen and called Shipyard Cove. It was purchased out of receivership 18 years ago by the Messiers and has since thrived. The restaurant and pub was once a bustling shipyard, as photos and other memorabilia inside will attest. That ceased operation in 1990 but the building was soon given a new life as a popular restaurant and pub, with the marina offices occupying the floor above.

After our dinner at the Shipyard we’re already planning our next visit. The next day we get that invigorating beat as we pull out of our berth and head past that selfsame boulder. The tide will be slack in Sansum Narrows by the time we get there, and then it’s back to our homeport on Pender Island. Maple Bay is a happy cruising ritual that will get revisited again this cruising season.

For panoramic views of Maple Bay and beyond, take to the trails in Maple Mountain Centennial Park . The park offers a wide range of trails for walkers and hikers, and range from 70 to 140 minutes. The Green Trail is easiest, the Orange Trail has a somewhat steep and rocky first half but then becomes an easy walk, and the Blue Trail has the best views but is very steep for much of the hike. The Pink Trail has the greatest elevation changes and is therefore the most demanding of the hikes.

Diving in the protected narrow inlet of Maple Bay is so good and so close to shore that the late Jacques Costeau considered it one of his favourite diving spots in the world! Diving around Vancouver Island .

Marine Activities: A playground of sea activities, Maple Bay offers a snug haven for boaters and kayakers, and a great beach with clean changing rooms for swimmers – providing breathtaking scenery for all. The natural beach is wonderful for collecting shells and driftwood, and for exploring sealife.

Mount Tzouhalem: The 536-metre Mount Tzouhalem north of Genoa Bay has hiking and biking trails for all ages and levels of ability, including wonderful wildflowers and spectacular views. The moderate hiking trail follows the ridge of Mt. Tzouhalem, providing 180 degree views of Cowichan Bay and Duncan. You’ll be able to see Mt. Whymper, Mt. Prevost and the Malahat. Access to the trail is from the end of Khenipsen Road. The trailhead is passed the gate with the chain strung across.

Golf: Golfers have a few golf courses in the area to choose from; Cowichan Golf and Country Club in Duncan (20 minutes from Crofton), Duncan Meadows Golf Course (15 minutes from Crofton), Mount Brenton Golf Course in Chemainus (10 minutes from Crofton), and Arbutus Ridge Golf Club in nearby Cobble Hill. Fishing: Sansum Narrows and Maple Bay are excellent places to fish for salmon, sea bass, and cod. The better spots are Arbutus Point and Octupus Point, and Maxwell Point and Bold Bluff Point off Saltspring Island.

Quamichan Lake just 3 km west of Maple Bay offers year-round fishing. Access to this popular lake is off Maple Bay Road, via Trunk Road to Indian Road.

The Maple Bay Yacht Club in protected Bird’s Eye Cove, offers protected moorage with excellent facilities and a licensed lounge in a friendly rural setting. The yacht club enjoys reciprocal privileges with most yacht clubs of the Pacific North West.

Maple Bay Marina , in Bird’s Eye Cove at the extreme south end of Maple Bay, features a full chandlery, a restaurant and a pub. Over the past decade, Maple Bay Marina has established a well-deserved reputation for providing excellent service, value, and friendly atmosphere second to none.

Crofton Beach in Osborne Bay Regional Park, between Maple Bay and nearby Crofton, offers warm saltwater swimming to pass the time between bouts of picnicking. Follow the signs to Crofton and you’ll find the beach.

Events: Needless to say, boats and boating are a big part of life around here. In May, owners and fans of classic wooden boats gather for Maple Bay’s annual Wooden Boat Festival , and two months later, devotees of the Chris Craft brand of boats arrive en mass for the Chris Craft Rendezvous .

Nearby Crofton provides a ferry service to Vesuvius Bay on Salt Spring Island , the most visited of the Gulf Islands chain. Art galleries and craft studios are plentiful on Saltspring Island, along with an impressive selection of shops and restaurants. While a few of Saltspring’s attractions can be seen in a whirlwind two hour drive, a thorough exploration of Saltspring could take weeks. Allow at least a full day or more…the serene island offers a tranquil respite for solace-seeking travellers. You can continue your journey by catching a second ferry from Fulford Harbour to Swartz Bay (Victoria).

Visit Genoa Bay , a serene cluster of waterside homes with a full-service marina, art gallery, restaurant and Bed & Breakfasts, or take a side trip to the Vancouver Island Trout Hatchery.

There is a helm cover and the vessel also has a full mooring cover, side hull cover, and foredeck cushion cover. HELM At the helm are all clear gauges, bow thruster control. The shifters and throttles are not pitted there is a tilt wheel and cup holders. For electronics there are Raymarine RL80 - VHF - ST6001+ Auto Pilot - ST60 Depth Finder, Raymarine Radar ENGINE ROOM Engine room access is under the lower cockpit sole; in the cockpit is an inspection hatch. Welcome to this rare boat. A wonderful eastern trawler inspired 1995 Maple Bay 27. Begonia is the perfect way to pass the kilometers in comfort and style. Her hull is all fiberglass and lots of teak accents make her stand out of the crowd. Over the cockpit, she has had a custom hardtop installed to keep out the weather but keeps canvas on the sides making it easy to open on fair weather days. The canvas has both screen and clear panels to adapt to all weather conditions, even a sunshade is included for when the sun sets low and you need to block it out a touch. The cockpit will easily seat four but would hold many more in a pinch- as well the forward cabin top is a perfect spot to layout. Begonia is powered by a 35HP very economical Yanmar diesel motor with only 1006 Hrs. Being a single screw an electric motor has been installed on the swim platform to act as a stern thruster if the need arises, helping make tight quarters much more manageable. Below is a classic environment of impeccable carpentry, she is built to last and impress. A forward cabin is for the captain and the large L shaped settee pulls out into as double birth. Her galley has pressure water H&C as well as a hidden stove top- both electric and Butane burners are installed a fridge and microwave are tucked away as well. The cabin area features lots of storage, a place for everything. The head is simple but functional, with a pump marine toilet and pressure water to a handheld shower. All her ports and windows are brass or have a brass frame. This Maple 27 is a boat built to travel or just stay close to home. At 10,000 lbs she can take some weather, so the choice is yours.

The 10 Most-Exciting Yacht Debuts at the Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show. 

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.  

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north. 

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests. 

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million. 

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Naples man, Bonita Springs woman die in Little Hickory Bay boat crash in North Naples

Two Southwest Florida residents died on Friday in a boat crash that remains under investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

John C. Moulder and Judy M. Eaton, both 71, suffered fatal injuries when the 21' Cobia Open Bay boat they were on crashed into the mangrove trees near Little Hickory Bay, Florida Fish and Wildlife said in a statement.

Moulder was from Naples and Eaton was from Bonita Springs.

Moulder and Eaton were the only occupants of the boat and no other vessels were involved in the crash, Florida Fish and Wildlife said.

Eaton was found in the trees and pronounced dead at the scene, while Moulder died from his injuries in a local hospital after being recovered from the water.

Collier had no boating death s in 2021 or 2022, according to the most recent statistical report released by Florida Fish and Wildlife.

Authorities have not released any further information as the investigation continues.

Fatal boat crash launched woman into trees and threw man into water, Florida cops say

A body pulled from trees was among two discovered after a 21-foot boat crashed near southwest Florida’s Little Hickory Bay, according to investigators.

It happened around 3 p.m. Friday, March 15, not far from North Naples, about a 160-mile drive south from Tampa, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release.

“The vessel, carrying two occupants, was traveling north, passing red channel marker 14, when it’s starboard side ran into the mangrove trees, ejecting both passengers,” FWC officials said.

“The unmanned vessel remained in gear until it crashed into the mangrove shoreline, coming to a stop.”

Judy Eaton, 71, of Bonita Springs “was recovered from the mangrove trees where she was pronounced deceased,” officials said.

John Moulder, 71, of Naples, was airlifted by EMS to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, “where he later died from his injuries,” officials said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol may have been a factor, investigators said in the report.

Boaters who use the area regularly told WBBH the couple died at a turn known to be dangerous, but signs marking the hazard vanished during Hurricane Ian , which struck southwest Florida in September 2022.

“Sadly, I was not surprised,” boater Kevin Price told the station. “I had a conversation with another friend recently about this turn specifically, and some of the close calls I’ve seen at this spot.”

An abandoned, burned boat and 2 missing men: South African authorities investigate maritime mystery

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — South African authorities searching for a missing charter boat captain are concerned about possible foul play after they discovered his vessel burned and abandoned on a beach in neighboring Mozambique, but no sign of him or the unknown man who hired him.

The National Sea Rescue Institute raised the alarm over captain John Matambu and his passenger after they didn’t return to Sodwana Bay on South Africa’s northeastern coast on Saturday evening having gone out early that morning.

The charred wreck of Matambu’s speed boat, Magnum Too, was discovered by a search plane on Sunday in the Dobela area of Mozambique, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) up the coast.

“Both men remain missing in unknown circumstances,” the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Matambu’s cousin told local media that a petrol canister and a medical kit were found near the boat.

The NSRI said some of the circumstances “appear to indicate that foul play may be involved.”

The man who hired Matambu to take him out on the 21-foot (6.4-meter) boat apparently gave false contact details, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said. The booking was made for a man, his wife and a child, but only the man boarded the boat, Lambinon said.

“Hopes are that this has all been a misunderstanding, and foul play was not involved, but at this stage all possibilities are being examined,” Lambinon told national broadcaster SABC. “The fact that the boat has been found across the border is obviously the difficulty now.”

The NSRI received a report that the boat was spotted at 10 p.m. Saturday night heading north toward Mozambican waters, it said, the last sighting before its charred hull was discovered the following day.

The Police Sea Borderline Control agency and the Police Search and Rescue unit are also involved in the search. Authorities described Matambu as a well-known, experienced and respected boat captain in Sodwana Bay.

The Russian ship destroyed in Berdyansk was the "Saratov," says Ukraine

Ukrainian armed forces named the Russian landing ship they say they attacked and destroyed in Berdyansk as the "Saratov," in a statement on Friday.  

In earlier reporting , the ship was named as the "Orsk."

“In the Azov operational zone, according to updated information, a large landing ship 'Saratov' was destroyed during the attack on the occupied Berdyansk port," the statement said.

The statement identified the two other large landing ships -- the "Caesar Kunikov" and "Novocherkassk" -- that were also said to have been destroyed during the attack.

"Other losses of the enemy are being clarified," the statement said.

Ukrainian  armed forces said they destroyed the large  Russian  landing ship at the port of Berdyansk in southern Ukraine on Thursday.

The port, which had recently been occupied by Russian forces with several Russian warships in dock, was rocked by a series of heavy explosions soon after dawn.

Social media videos showed fires raging at the dockside, with a series of secondary explosions reverberating across the city.

Several Russian ships had been unloading military equipment at Berdyansk in recent days, according to reports from the port by Russian media outlets.

Russia claims its forces destroyed large fuel depot in Ukraine with cruise missiles

Russian Ministry of Defense spokesman Igor Konashenkov claimed Friday that Russian forces destroyed "the largest of the remaining fuel depots" near Kyiv, with a strike carried out with sea-launched Kalibr cruise missiles . 

"On the evening of March 24, a strike was carried out with sea-launched Kalibr precision cruise missiles on a fuel base in Kalynovka, outside Kyiv," Konashenkov claimed. 

"The largest of the remaining fuel depot of the Ukrainian armed forces, which supplied fuel to military units in the central part of the country, was destroyed," Konashenkov added. 

CNN could not immediately verify that claim.

More details have emerged this week about the military arsenal that Russia is using in Ukraine. 

US President Joe Biden confirmed on Monday that Russia has also used  hypersonic missiles  in its invasion.

"And if you'll notice, (Russia has) just launched the hypersonic missile, because it's the only thing that they can get through with absolute certainty," Biden said. "It's a consequential weapon ... it's almost impossible to stop it. There's a reason they're using it."

But British intelligence and even Biden's own defense secretary have downplayed Russia's use of its air-launched Kinzhal missiles.

US President Joe Biden and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen on Friday announced a joint task force in an effort to wean Europe from its dependence on Russian oil and gas.

The panel, chaired by representatives from the White House and the European Commission, will aim to find alternative supplies of liquified natural gas and reduce overall demand for natural gas.

The United States will work toward supplying Europe with at least 15 billion cubic meters of liquified natural gas in 2022, in partnership with other nations, the White House said.

Some context: Europe's dependence on Russian gas and oil has proved a major sticking point in Western efforts to punish Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. While the US banned Russian energy imports, Europe found it far more difficult to cut off its supplies.

The group will also work toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions by paring down methane emissions and using clean energy.

UK Defense Ministry: Ukraine has reoccupied towns and defensive positions east of Kyiv

Ukrainian forces have retaken towns and defensive positions on the eastern outskirts of Kyiv, Britain's Ministry of Defence said Friday in its latest intelligence update.

"Ukrainian counter-attacks, and Russian Forces falling back on overextended supply lines, has allowed Ukraine to re-occupy town and defensive positions up to 35 kilometers (21 miles) east of Kyiv," the ministry said.  "Ukrainian Forces are likely to continue to attempt to push Russian Forces back along the north-western axis from Kyiv towards Hostomel Airfield."

Meanwhile, the advance of Russian forces toward the Black Sea port city of Odesa was stalling, the ministry said.

"Russian forces are still attempting to circumvent Mykolaiv as they look to drive west towards Odesa with their progress being slowed by logistic issues and Ukrainian resistance," the ministry added. 

Some context: According to official Ukrainian accounts, the country's forces have retaken territory to the east of Kyiv following intense fighting Thursday, reversing previous Russian gains. Social media videos geolocated by CNN showed Ukrainian troops along with some captured Russian armor in the small settlement of Lukyanovka, some 35 miles (55 kilometers) east of the capital.

If there's one nation that understands  Ukraine's torment , it's Poland, which welcomes  President Joe Biden  on Friday as part of  his emergency mission  to shore up NATO's defenses following Russia's brutal invasion.

In the United States, Biden's warnings that democracy is under siege from menacing autocrats can seem remote, even after  former President Donald Trump's  US Capitol insurrection and attempt to steal the 2020 election.

But in Poland, which neighbors  Ukraine , freedom is fresh enough to still be a novelty. In a tortured 20th-century history, the country — torn between East and West — was repeatedly conquered, was ruled by foreign tyrants and saw millions of its people purged or driven as refugees from homes destroyed by warfare.

Poland again finds itself on the front line of conflict. It's on the dividing line between states in the NATO club, to which it now belongs, and President Vladimir Putin's Russian orbit, which includes another Polish neighbor, Belarus. Poland has opened its borders to more than 2 million of the nearly  3.7 million Ukrainians  who have fled Putin's onslaught, and the war came close to its borders with a Russian strike on a base in western Ukraine earlier this month.

Like Ukraine, Poland lived for decades under Moscow's Communist iron fist. Like Ukrainians, Poles are often gritty, are deeply suspicious of Russians and have fighting for their freedom and sovereignty ingrained in their DNA. Unlike Ukraine, one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union, Poland made it to the West after decades under the Warsaw Pact umbrella. And in addition to being in NATO, it's a member of the European Union, albeit one that has had tensions recently with Brussels over its own flirtations with populist nationalism.

As Putin's threat mounted in recent years, Poland hosted rotations of US troops and jets. In February, before Putin invaded Ukraine, Poland was one of the nations to which Biden ordered  3,000 troops  to bolster the alliance's eastern flank. If the war in Ukraine spills over into a broader conflict between Russia and the West, a frightening prospect, there's a good chance it could happen in Poland.

On Thursday, as Western leaders gathered in Brussels for security summits, North Korea launched what it said was a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) — its first long-range test in more than four years.

According to analysts , the recent spate of North Korean missile tests suggest the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, is attempting to show an increasingly turbulent world that Pyongyang remains a player in the struggle for power and influence.

"North Korea refuses to be ignored and may be trying to take advantage of global preoccupation with the war in Ukraine to force a fait accompli on its status as a nuclear weapons state," Leif-Eric Easley, associate professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, told CNN. "North Korea is nowhere near initiating aggression on the scale of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But Pyongyang's ambitions likewise exceed self-defense as it wants to overturn the postwar security order in Asia."

Intense clashes around Izyum have left much of the city destroyed, city officials say, with new satellite images revealing the extent of the devastation in the eastern Ukrainian city.

The images were taken on Thursday by Maxar Technologies.

They show a massive crater about 40 feet (12 meters) wide in a field in the city's central area. The burnt wreckage of a school lies on one side of the crater, with a football field on the other. Part of a hospital across the street is also seen destroyed.  

The city has been caught in the crossfire as Russia attempts to link advances made in the Kharkiv region of northern Ukraine with its stronghold in the far east of the country.

Council deputy Max Strelnyk told CNN on Thursday the city had been “completely destroyed” by Russian aircraft and artillery, even as fierce battles continued inside Izyum for control of the ground.

North of the school in the satellite images, a large boiler building and every nearby residential building appears destroyed. There does not appear to be any identifiable military targets in this part of central Izyum. 

About 3 miles (5 kilometers) northwest of Izyum, a convoy of Russian self-propelled artillery is seen moving toward the city.

Russian troops now control the city sectors on the northern bank of the Seversky Donets River, which splits Izyum in half, Strelnyk said. The Ukrainians control the city sectors on the southern bank of the river.  

Three miles northeast of the city, Russian self-propelled artillery are also seen positioned in a field, their turrets pointing toward central Izyum.

Another image shows two vehicle bridges crossing the Seversky Donets River have been partially destroyed, in what appears to be a purposeful strike to stop a Russian advance across the river.

But the Russians have found a way around, and are now advancing on the city from the south.

To bypass the blown bridges, the Russians have erected two pontoon bridges over the Seversky Donets River to encircle the city. A mile from those bridges, on the southern bank of the river, a convoy of tanks are seen moving along a highway toward the Ukrainian-controlled sectors of Izyum.

Japan adds 25 more Russians to sanctions list in response to Ukraine war

Japan will freeze the assets of 25 more Russian citizens and ban exports to 81 Russian organizations, the country's Ministry of Finance said in a news release on Friday. 

It brings the total number of Russians targeted by Japan's asset freezes to 101 people.

Targets of the new sanctions include Igor Shuvalov,  a former Russian deputy prime minister  and chairman of major state-owned bank Vnesheconombank, and five of oligarch Sergey Chemezov's relatives, according to Japan's Finance Ministry. 

The export of luxury goods will also be banned, the ministry said. 

Tokyo has unveiled a raft of punitive measures against Moscow in recent weeks. The latest sanctions come as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged on Wednesday to unveil more support for Ukraine at the G7 summit in Brussels.

Western oil and gas companies have paid $15B in taxes to Russia since it annexed Crimea, NGOs say

Nine European and US fossil fuel companies have paid a collective  $15.8 billion to Russia  in various forms of taxes and fees since the country annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, a group of NGOs said Thursday.

The groups, Global Witness, Greenpeace USA and Oil Change International, used data from Oslo-based Rystad Energy, an independent energy research firm , to calculate how much money oil and gas companies  based in North America and Europe had sent to the Russian state. They looked only at companies with exploration and production operations in Russia.

They looked at royalties, export duties, bonuses, taxes and fees, as well as "government profit oil," which includes the value of any oil the  companies may have given to Russia. It came up with a list of nine companies from these regions that had paid the most money to Russia. All those payments were legal, and other multinational companies outside the energy sector have also have made similar kinds of payments to the Russian state.

Shell,  which is registered in the UK, sent $7.85 billion, the highest amount of the companies listed, the groups said in a statement, shared first with CNN. It was followed by US-based ExxonMobil ($2.81 billion). Two companies registered in Germany, Wintershall and Wintershall DEA, which have since merged, paid a combined total of $2.86 billion. BP, the British multinational oil and gas company, paid $817 million, the data from Rystad shows.

The data was shared amid criticisms that the West's purchases of Russian coal, oil and gas — which are largely state-owned assets — have helped fund Russia's war in Ukraine. The addition of taxes, fees and royalties for companies that have chosen to operate in Russia underscores how much capital Western energy companies have transferred to Russia.

The three groups that compiled the data said that while the $15.8 billion figure was substantial, the companies identified were also responsible for tens of billions of dollars more flowing to the Russian state because of stakes they hold in Russian oil and gas companies.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."
