Svea is the newest J Class yacht in the current fleet and was launched in January 2017. At 143ft/43.6m Svea has the longest LOA by 15cms.

Her original designs were drawn in 1937 by Swedish Olympian and renowned 6 and 8 Metre boat designer Tore Holm along with compatriot boatbuilder Gustav Plym, but war put paid to any hopes of a Swedish America’s Cup challenge.  The  designs were left untouched in a drawer until they were discovered by Dutch yachting historian and 8 Metre boat enthusiast John Lammerts van Bueren.

Designer Andre Hoek and a group of Dutch enthusiasts including an owner bought the designs and, after careful analysis and refinement in line with their VPP modelling, the hull and deck were built. But the owner pulled out. The project was bought by an American owner who, after having sailed on four other J Class yachts, wanted to compete at the 2017 J Class America’s Cup Regatta and the inaugural J Class World Championships in Newport that year.

While the two halves of the hull and the deck were built at Claasens, the build was completed at Vitters on a very tight schedule in order to be in Bermuda on time for the J Class America’s Cup regatta.

Svea encompasses powerful traditional lines infused with the latest race boat technology. She has a very low freeboard and an extremely clean deck layout and a notably low boom. One trademark is a very large wheel which is set into a deep recess. There are two big working cockpits split by a small doghouse. The halyard and spinnaker trimming winches and crew work out of the forward  cockpit.

Svea’s first races were at the America’s Cup Superyacht regatta in Bermuda in 2017. In 2018 after changes to the keel, a longer boom, bigger main and smaller jibs, Svea won the class at the Saint Barths Bucket in 2018.

In 2022 post pandemic Svea passed into the hands of two passionate Swedish yachtsmen, both accomplished racing enthusiasts, who were inspired to bring Svea – which translates as Mother Sweden – under her native Swedish flag.

After a short, intense week of training under tactician Bouwe Bekking, Svea proved her speed and power over the two main regattas they sailed that year, winning The Superyacht Cup Palma in June 2022 and then winning the class title at the Rolex Maxi Yacht Cup.

Svea is helmed by the owners at events sharing steering duties between them. Seven times round the world racer Bouwe Bekking is tactician, Steve Hayles is navigator and Tim Powell is project manager and mainsheet trimmer.

Dreams are meant for dreamers , our yachts are meant for sailors .

The magnificent 43.6-metre Svea is the latest and greatest in the line of new yachts built as part of the rebirth of the legendary J-Class yachts. As a ‘super J’ at the upper end of the specifications of the Universal Rule, Svea is an imposing yacht in her own right. The Vitters craftsmen and engineers incorporated a wealth of modern elements and construction methods to create an exceptionally advanced sailing yacht.

SVEA Project

j class yacht svea

The Svea Project By Gene Novak

While perusing the J Class Association website (jclassyachts.com) one day last July, I read a race report about the Superyacht Cup Palma with results of racing between Velsheda and Svea. It appeared to me that Svea was a fast boat but her corrected handicap time was a problem. This interested me because I compete in the AMYA J Class with a scale model of Ranger, 101” long and 97 lbs. The thought was to investigate the possibility of a Svea project to compete with Ranger. Since we don’t have handicap considerations and race boat to boat, the possibility of a speed advantage was attractive.

Ranger was of course designed by Sparkman & Stephens/Starling Burgess for the 1937 Americas Cup and went on to win decisively over Endeavor II in the last of the J Class races for the Cup. When I produced a hull and mold using plans from Sparkman & Stephens, the boat proved to be fast. Fast enough to win the 2017 J Class National Championship against models of Shamrock V, Endeavor, Endeavor II and a couple other Ranger hulls. Svea was designed by Tore Holm of Sweden after the America’s Cup of 1937 had been held. In doing some research on Svea I found an article in classicboat.co.uk showing that the plans had not been discovered until John Lammerts van Bueren, owner of an 8 Meter yacht designed by Tore Holm, found the plans among other designs in the basement of Holm’s daughter’s house. I was intrigued. Attempts were made to contact several sources to obtain copies of the plans with no success until I emailed John. Wow, what a fantastic source of information on classic boats!

j class yacht svea

When I mentioned to Mr. van Bueren that I was thinking of the 1/16 scale radio-controlled version of Svea, he jumped at the chance to offer information and assistance. He was kind enough in his response to copy two key people: Elizabeth Meyer, who restored the J boat Endeavor, co-founder of the J Class Owners Association, and owner of J Class Management, who had contracted to have the original drawings of Tore Holm digitized. Elizabeth was so taken with the design drawings that she named the boat Svea (feminine Swede). And T. J. Perrotti of Perrotti Performance Designs who digitized the original drawings and with the approval of Elizabeth, made them available to me in a CAD program. Without the help from these three fine people, this project would not have been possible. Fortunately, my son is an architect with access to CAD programing and he was able to convert the files into 1/16 scale drawings of incredible accuracy. Because physics don’t scale down, the AMYA J Class rules allow for the keel to be extended by 2 inches which was done and approved by the class secretary John Hanks. This proved difficult to extend without disturbing the attractive lines of Svea and took considerable thought to look just right. Now that the hull is planked, the extra thought was well worth it.

j class yacht svea

During the process of deciding whether or not to go forward with this project (building the boat, creating a mold and then producing accurate hulls) I continued correspondence with John Lammerts van Bueren. He is an incredible resource and informed me of a little-known detail. When Harold Vanderbilt committed to building the defender for the 1937 Americas Cup, he contracted with Sparkman & Stephens/Starling Burgess, to create 4 designs which were then tank tested at the Stephens Institute to ascertain which design was superior. They tested all of the designs in 1/24 scale with various angles of heel and different angles of leeway to see which design was best. During that tank testing they employed an apprentice by the name of Gustav Plym, who was observing the tests. When Gustav finished his apprenticeship with Sparkman & Stephens, he returned to Sweden and partnered with Tore Holm to design a J boat that remained secret until late in the 20th Century. His knowledge from the tank testing of Ranger was surely used in the design of Svea.

Once the decision was made to go forward with the project, plans were produced according to T. J.’s CAD program and thanks to the detail of the drawings, frames were produced to very close tolerances and put together on a building board. Plank and frame construction have produced a unique boat which compares very favorably with the 1/16 model of Ranger produced from Sparkman & Stephens plans that I made two years ago. The differences between the designs make it hard to believe that they are both J Class yachts. Svea will be 1-1/2 inches longer than Ranger at this scale which is 102-1/2 inches long, yes that’s 8’ 6-1/2”. Svea has finer ends, more beam and a wider keel. It will be very interesting when I put both boats together on the course and have a 1940 America’s Cup here in Northern California.

So here we are, six weeks after I read the article on the J Class Association website and the plank and frame construction for the hull is nearly done. This will serve as the plug to create the mold for fiberglass hulls. There is lots of work to do yet, more fairing, fiber glassing the hull, creating the mold and assembling the final boat for sea trials against Ranger. I have to thank all who have assisted with this project: John Lammerts van Bueren, Elizabeth Meyer, T. J. Perrotti, and my local source here in Sacramento, Gordon Nash, who just happened to have a supply of 50 year old Sitka Spruce that he donated to the project.  With the help of Bill Robinson and his wood shop, this aged wood was turned into 5/32” X 3/8” S4S planking. As the process continues, follow up articles are promised.  I hope the finished product meets all of their expectations.

The new J Class Yacht Svea was launched in January 2017 to an original hull linesplan of Thore Holm made in 1937. Fast forward, this spectacular new J took 80 years to finally touch the water and is one of the most promising new J-Class Yachts built to date. Svea is by many regarded as one of the most beautiful J’s and potentially one of the fastest one’s. Hoek Design redesigned her linesplan, did all exterior styling, naval architecture work and performance optimization. Her construction, decklayout and sailplan were optimized for racing, incorporating many new features. The interior design was done by the late Pieter Beeldsnijder in cooperation with Hoek Design. Interior decoration was done by deVosdeVries. She was built at Vitters Shipyards with help from Claasen Shipyards who initially started the project. Hull construction was by Bloemsma in the Netherlands who previously built three other aluminium J Class hulls. Van Ineveld & Co acted as owners representatives.

Svea sailed fast and smart to lead at every mark to win Race 1, despite Velsheda having the best start and crossing Svea initially. The newest J Class in the fleet – which is racing at a lighter displacement than last year – was able to set up to windward of Velsheda and was visibly quicker and able to slightly lift away.At the top mark they were a boat length and a half clear of Velsheda with Topaz the same distance behind in third. The two chasing boats gybe set or gybed early and downwind they were able to gain back slightly on leader Svea which had their spinnaker sheet under the jib and could not respond immediately. The breeze picked up slightly on the second round and Svea extended away to win by nearly two minutes on the water which corrected to victory by 1 minute and 26 seconds over Topaz which crossed third through the finish line. The second start was won by Topaz, America’s Cup and match racing ace Peter Holmberg showing a deft touch, but whilst Svea and Topaz were drag racing upwind, Velsheda hooked into a nice windshift out to the far left. Coming into the turn on port tack, they were able to round just ahead of Svea and Topaz.Flying a symmetrical spinnaker, Velsheda gained a few metres on the gybes and made a very tidy mark rounding through the leeward gate. In the 15-16kts wind they extended upwind but by the finish still needed another 30 seconds more of an advantage to beat Svea on corrected time. And so, while Svea lead with their two well-earned wins today, Topaz and Velsheda both scored a second and third apiece. On the first race Topaz took second place by only eight seconds ahead of Velsheda.

j class yacht svea

The sleek, black hulled Tore Holm design may have proven unbeatable today but Tuesday is forecast to see winds well over 20kts which should mean an exciting, demanding coastal race into the La Maddalena gulf – or bomb alley as it is better known.

Svea’s tactician Bouwe Bekking was happy with their day, recalling, “We were going well downwind and we have done quite a bit of work on our spinnakers and that’s made a difference. The second race was full on. Velsheda has the heels on us in that breeze. You can see she is more upright, stiffer.”

Considering this was the first day this year that the three boats have lined up against each other, the standard was generally very high. The starts showed just the right mix of being prudently conservative – as required on these giant, powerful machines – finding the perfect time on distance and some that just missed just mark by a few seconds here and there.

Bekking recalled their second start, “We pulled the trigger just a little too late on the start. We could have gone up on the Topaz guys, we had the opportunity, but you just don’t go there on these boats. We all have to be careful.”

Velsheda’s tactician Tom Dodson was happy to have outperformed Svea on the second race, but was left wondering what more they could have done to win: “I don’t think we could have done much more against them. We got a good shift out on the left, we were happy over there and could see the maxis getting left shifts at the top of the beat and the other two boats overlaid and that brought us more into the game. We got some good help from our guys at the back of the boat to sneak round ahead of Svea. It is never easy to come in on port at the last minute. You get to a point with these boats where you can’t dip but Grant Simmer and Ronald were confident, and we were good. We did not really know what the timings are. At this stage in the regatta we are just trying to go as fast as we can.”

Peter Holmberg, helmsman on Topaz, was very happy with the changes they have made, adding some new sails, new trimmers and bringing in Andy Horton for this regatta as tactician. Of their starting strategy he explained, “We feel a little vulnerable in our turning ability, so we have a particular style that keeps it reasonable. The second start we got out of there OK, our first start was ‘off’. We still achieved OK from ordinary starts. The positives are that the boat is fast enough as this is the first time we have lined up this year since all the changes everyone has made.”

Svea Found at Fault in J-Class Collision with Topaz

A decision has been reached on the cause of the shocking collision between J Class sailing yachts  Svea  and  Topaz  during the Superyacht Challenge Antigua earlier this month.

The 43.6 metre Svea was captured riding over the stern of the 42.6 metre Topaz , resulting in the injury of three crew members.

A hearing report released by the J Class Association on the incident found  Svea responsible for the collision for failing to keep clear as the port tack boat. It also concluded that it was deemed impossible for Topaz to avoid the collision.

The incident occurred shortly before the first race on March 12, with  Topaz  approaching the starting line around one minute and 40 seconds ahead of the start of the race.

Svea , on port, was on course to collide with  Topaz  and attempted to bear away at the last moment. Despite  Topaz  luffing to avoid the crash,  Svea  collided with the port side of  Topaz , causing serious damage in the process.

Topaz’s  boom, back stays and mainsheet were broken while the port runner was torn off. The mast was put under “extreme load” according to the report, and will undergo further inspection.

Two crew members on board  Topaz  were thrown from the boat, including one who suffered four broken ribs when he was pushed overboard by the bow of  Svea . A crew member on board  Svea  was also pulled from the boat by the runner tail of  Topaz .

Following the collision, both yachts immediately retired from the race and the Superyacht Challenge Antigua. Dramatic footage of the collision was captured on board fellow J Class yacht  Velsheda .

Both  Topaz  and  Svea  are race veterans and have competed against each other in a number of international sailing regattas, including the St Barths Bucket and the Superyacht Cup Palma.

Built by Vitters,  Svea  was launched in 2017 making her the newest member of the J Class fleet.  Topaz  is also a modern J Class, and is based on an unbuilt 1935 Frank Paine design.  Topaz  was delivered by Holland Jachtbouw in 2015.

Nine Js and counting: J Class Svea J-S1 is sold and under construction at Vitters

  • Toby Hodges
  • December 1, 2015

News that Vitters Shipyard is fitting out the J Class Svea, takes the tally of formidable Js to nine. It also gives hope of seeing the biggest collection of J Class ever at the Bermuda America’s Cup event in 2017 – and perhaps six or more racing together for the first time!

J Class Svea sailplan

Vitters Shipyard has announced that it is fitting out its first J Class yacht. The brand new 43.60m aluminum hull of the J Class Svea is the longest of the current fleet.

Svea is based on an original Tore Holm design from 1937, and is one of the most stunning Js yet to be built. It has since been reconfigured and styled by Hoek Design’s J supremo Andre Hoek.

The news comes at a time of resurgence in interest in the J Class in the build up to the showcase regatta that will form part of the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017 .

And it follows soon after the launch of J8 Topaz from Holland Jachtbouw in June . Indeed it is hoped that Vitters will be able to complete the work in time for Svea to make the Bermuda regatta.

Can you imagine seeing six or more Js racing together? It could steal a hefty dose of thunder from the flying catamarans – but is equally a shrewd ‘foil’ to ensure all sailing enthusiasts tune into the event.

J Class Svea at Vitters

Ever since visiting the hull in its early months of initial construction at Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw in early 2014, I have been silently hoping this project finds a willing owner. Even then the bare aluminium plating alone looked awesome.

Svea’s hull construction is based on longitudinals on web frames, with high tensile frames and Alustar hull plating. Today’s news confirms that Svea has found a new owner and that Vitters Shipyard will start with the fit out and systems shortly.

The Zwartsluis based yard is unfazed by big projects. It built the largest ketch in the world – the 85m Tripp design that launched last year – one of the largest sloops (66m Aglaia), and it refitted the 67m ketch Hetairos this year.

That Vitters uses a very efficient sub contractor model, fuels hope that the J Class Svea can be fitted out and launched in time for the Bermuda event. Few yards in the world are capable of completing a project of this size on this timescale.

Research by the Hoek Design office suggests that the design of J-S1 will be very capable, especially upwind. Swedish designer, sailor and boatbuilder Tore Holm was an expert in Metre racing yachts between 1920s and 1950s. He built 700 boats, won four Olympic medals himself, while five medals were won by boats he designed.

Svea’s interior will be designed by Pieter Beeldsnijder Designers & Naval Architects, and will have traditional styling in line with the overall character of the yacht. The client’s brief called for a change in the original deck arrangement, to accommodate the equipment used in modern J-Class racing.

When she launches, the J Class Svea will join the impressive current fleet of J Class yachts sailing: Shamrock V, Endeavour, Velsheda (all originals), plus Ranger, Hanuman, Lionheart (pictured below), Rainbow and Topaz.

The J Class Svea project has been developed in close cooperation with Claasen Shipyards and Hoek Design and will be finished at Vitters Shipyard.
We will be following it here keenly!

The best golf clubs in moscow: luxury, exclusivity, and entertainment.

By Walter Raymond

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

“Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.

Small ship cultural journeys are a gateway to a collection of treasures..., culturally inspired cruising fuels the imagination....

Cultural journeys aboard our small ship cruises evoke golden sand beaches, vineyards bucolic with lemon trees, olives and vines, lavender fields fragrant from afar, limestone caves and rocky mounts, sculpted in time... Past is present in architectural artistry, fortified towns and terra cotta tableaus that play out in palaces and promenades steeped in history... in places immortalized with nature's colorful brush, where masterfully crafted wines were made to sip and savor, traditions toasted and tales fondly shared... where you become part of the stories, past and present, that make your cruise memories last lifetimes.

Expeditionary Cruises: Exhilarating adventures in unseen worlds...

Expeditionary cruises to exotic locations, from the sea to the shore....

The first maritime expeditions date back millennia when explorers in dugout canoes and sailing boats plied the seas to untraveled destinations. While the expeditionary ships you'll sail aboard with Tauck are modern in every way, the remote ports where you will cast anchor are timeless still. Imagine setting foot on an equatorial beach teeming with wildlife found nowhere else in the world. Or navigating ice floes to stand on the ethereal seventh continent. Come aboard our expeditionary cruises and get ready to check off bucket list experiences other travelers only dream of.

Treasures of the Mediterranean Isles

Designed to inspire

Cruise the azure waters of the Mediterranean, where we launched our first small ship cruise in 1993

And 30 years later, a new voyage of cultural exploration as you chart a course through the Mediterranean Isles on a thoughtfully reimagined itinerary that sets the standard for a new era aboard a Ponant ship designed for intimate cruising. Explore Elba, steeped in Napoleonic tales; cast anchor off of Corsica, a jet-setter's paradise; step ashore in two different ports of call in Sicily, enticing with antiquities and stunning vistas; experience Sardinia, culturally rich with prehistoric sites; and make history in Malta where the Knights of Malta left a living legacy gilded in gold and silver.

Cultural journeys and expeditions

The mighty Great Lakes have played a vital role in the history and cultural fabric of North America for centuries... explore their storied waters... and unique cities and towns... that have grown along their shores...

See for yourself what small ship cruising is all about, the majesty of niagara falls, experiencing the thunder of niagara falls on the us-canadian border.

North America's most powerful waterfall – and one of its most famous and often-visited natural treasures – Niagara Falls actually comprises three distinctive waterfalls on the Niagara River, perched on the border of Ontario, Canada and New York. Every minute, some six million cubic feet of water plunges over the crests of the Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil Falls and tumbles down nearly 200 feet into the rocky gorge below into a thundering cauldron of water and mist. Experiencing the raw power of Niagara Falls firsthand is something you'll never forget... and just what you'll do as you first view the falls from a panoramic spot high above... then don a hooded raincoat and board a private boat for an up-close – and very wet – encounter with this iconic "wonder of the natural world."

Traverse the Welland Canal

A marvel of engineering two centuries in the making....

Comprising eight locks that enable ship traffic to travel between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario by bypassing the Niagara River and Niagara Falls, the Welland Canal is a 200-year engineering marvel that actually represents four successive canals. Originally designed and built in the 1820s, a second canal replaced it in the late 1840s, and a third opened in 1887. The construction on the fourth and current Welland Canal – which your ship on "Cruising the Great Lakes" will traverse in about 11 hours, accompanied by an expert guide – began before World War I was not completed until 1932 and expanded some 40 years later.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Step back in time on michigan's mackinac island.

Vehicle-free Mackinac Island – off the Michigan coast in the Straits of Mackinac connecting Lakes Michigan and Huron – has been a popular retreat since 19th-century industrialists built imposing summer "cottages" here, and remains serenely lost in time. The only way to get around is by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage, as you make your way past impeccable Victorian mansions and out to the fringes of forest, marshes, beaches and 19th-century Fort Mackinac. The island is home to the palatial Grand Hotel, which lays claim to the longest porch in the world. Since 1887, the Grand has hosted many presidents, as well as the likes of Mark Twain and Thomas Edison (who first demonstrated his phonograph on the hotel's iconic porch).

Partial Room Cancellation

A person who cancels or leaves a tour while a roommate remains constitutes a cancellation of one type of accommodation and rebooking of another type of accommodation. The price charged to the remaining person is the new, higher price for the new accommodation.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

The Ponant Explorer-Class Ship is registered in France. If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

The Ponant Explorer-Class ship has a licensed and registered physician onboard for professional and emergency services, which are available at customary charges. The ship's small infirmary is designed to provide medical care for certain temporary illnesses and accidents, and is not intended to or capable of providing on-going treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Canada. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be uneven, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Therefore, roads and walkways may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in in order to appreciate fully the sometimes challenging terrain.

Onboard ship, health and fitness devotees will find a spa and fitness center on Deck 7.

We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.  Guests must advise Tauck of any food allergies or special dietary needs at the time of booking.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Great Moscow State Circus

3 reviews of Great Moscow State Circus

Russian circus.

This building houses the world's largest fixed circus which has an outstanding reputation. I couldn't personally attend the show "Around the World", which is the most famous, but was able to see the new year's show and it was amazing.Part of the purest Russian tradition, the circus really can't disappoint. However, unlike the Circus Nikutin which smaller, modest and not as well-known, but in a better condition this circus shows signs of wear. When I was there, in midwinter, the water was dripping from the ceiling. However, the show is really succesful, and I had to buy tickets in November for January 1st, and Regular show tickets were not available before February.
