Story of the Kathryn Ann...I bought this boat in 2004 off of eBay from an insurance website that sells boats that have been damaged. In this particular case, Hurricane Isabelle ran up the eastern coast and hit the marina this boat was stored at in Maryland, in which the waves beat the boat on the starboard side into the dock piling resulting in damage to the side of the boat and the interior walls of the bathroom (opposite side of the hull damage). I had the boat shipped to me in Panama City, FL where I started the rebuild. Upon arrival of the boat, I took everything out of it and rinsed it all down. I could tell that water had entered the boat and looked as if it had rolled over to its starboard side down in the water a bit because I could see the water line marks. The boat was in fresh water, but where the storm churned up the water, there was a blanket of dirt in the part of the cabin from the water intrusion. Everything cleaned up pretty well except the wood from the water line down was stained. I took the motor out, which is a Yanmar 3GM30F, and had a diesel mechanic go through it and luckily no water got in the engine and it has ran like a top since I have had it. I repaired the hull with the best glass and resins from RAKA in south Florida, never had any problems since the repair. Once I finished up the hull repair, I went ahead and put it in the water to start enjoying it with the intentions of working on it on the weekends to finish it up. Unfortunately not long after putting the boat in the water, I got orders to be stationed in Colorado (Air Force guy) where there is little water! I have been trying to get back to Panama City every since with no luck. So I would come down a couple times a year to try to complete the finish work, but never seemed to get it completed because I would rather take it out with the boys and have fun instead of work on it! As much as it kills me, I need to let her go so that the next person can finish what I started and bring her back to her ol' glory, plus my family never got into it like I hoped, it's a great boat that needs to be used. I'll try my best to describe what still needs to be done...I have rewired most of the DC, never messed with the AC for the simple fact that I didn't have a hook-up available, so that will need to be gone through, the key switch on the operator panel needs to be replaced, I have a lot of new line, but some will still need to be replaced, the anchor light on top of the mast needs replacing, the teak needs to be cleaned and re oiled, there are some pieces that will need to be replaced, the cushions in the front cabin have some water damage (see pic), I have some extra material to do this, but would recommend something a little less 1980s in there. There is a little tear in one of the seat cushions, see pic. Need fuel gauge put in, have one on the boat, just not installed yet. Needs new instruments (speed/depth) possibly just transducer, I used a friends electronics when I took it out for depths. The bathroom needs to be finished, everything works, just needs finishing. Starboard side bumper over repair needs securing. I used the propane system for the stove 5-6 yrs ago, but would recommend going through that to make sure everything checks out. All the stainless needs polishing. Needs bottom paint. A couple of the deck poles need the base rewelded and resealed to the boat, that is where some of the water leaked in the boat over the years. There are some chips in the gelcoat on the rear right side (top deck) from something pecking on it, some gelcoat cracks from age, nothing major, aesthetic stuff. There may be a few more things here and there like screws that need replaced or line, but to the best of my knowledge, that's about it. This is a great buy for a Father/son deal to teach your kids the ins and outs of a sailboat without spending a huge chunk of cash, plus not worry about the kid dinking up a big money boat. Or great for a person to take to the keys or the beaches of the Gulf. Good Luck...hit me up with any questions! Here's my 2cents... ... and obviously there are lots of owner reviews.There are two distinct cabin designs for this boat. One version has a conventional bulkhead forward of the saloon, the other (mine) has you climb over the settee into the vee-berth.I originally liked the wide-open plan of my boat, but I realize now that it was just a boatshow trick to make the inside of the boat look larger. Try to find the bulkhead model.There are two mainsheet setups for this boat. One has a traveler on the cabintop, the other (mine) has a very short traveler on the steering pedestal and an end-boom mainsheet. I don't know how people sail the model with the cabintop traveler without installing a third winch for the mainsheet. Look for the model with the mainsheet led to the steering pedestal. However, if there is a 3rd cabintop winch, the other type is probably preferable.I'll bet that 90% of these boats were made with the 4.5 draft wing keel. Boats with this keel (mine)point slightly worse than the average river barge, get the fin if you get lucky enough to find one.Otherwise, the real question is: do you want a Hunter? Do you know about the B&R rig, and how it affects sailing off the wind? If you're OK with that--I'm not after five years of ownership--then the 336 is a comfortable, inexpensive cruiser. Maybe you'd like to buy mine? On second thought, never mind. I hate the thought of shopping for another boat.Paulsv Escape Artisth336  

We like ours We bought 95 336 last year. It has the (harken)cabin top traveller. It points very well and we haven't really had any winch issures. We have 2 on the cabin to and 2 on the rear portion of the cockpit comings. I never have had to use the winch on the traveller. We are very happy with the boat and the only downside is not being able to go down wind well.  

1995- 336 purchased in Jan 04 We moved up from a 31 to a 336 in January. What a difference! The large cockpit, open interior layout and 27 HP is what sold us. My boat also has air conditioning which we could never do without now. Everything has been great with one big exception. Check the floor support below the compression post. This is a vertical oak wood support below the fiberglass. You can see it through a hole in the sump area. This will rot out and your sole and mast will drop because of it. Our's is down 3/4". As soon as I pull the boat for the winter, we will drop the mast and cut out the wood and replace it with alu or s/s. Our repair dealer wanted 5/6K to repair. Too much for me. Check this before you buy. Without this problem, this has been a great buy.  

Great Boat Points well, is fast, large cockpit. Find one that has a cruising spinnaker with the winches installed and the fun begins.People want to sail the boat straight down wind. The boat is not made to do that. It is more like an Americas Cup rig. "Tack" down wind watching you VMG.  

Jib sheeting We chartered a 336 this summer and it was a great boat to spend time on. However, I was not impressed with its sailing capabilities.One problem was with the the jibs. They seem to be lined up such they wrap around the spreaders. Maybe it was because the jib wasnt a 110 but I tried a couple of different leads to get it to work right wit the cabin top winches.Speaking of winches. They standard ones seemed very undersized for hauling up the main. The 3 reef points didn't help either.Loved the cockpit, cabin, galley, etc.Markdb  

I like ours Bob,if you are commited to a b&r rig (as on most hunters) you know the downside of the rig.on the other hand the 336 has a large roach main sail and is good in light winds.It is a very good combination(IMO)of sailing and crusier friendy layout. The boat is very roomy and has a huge cockpit.(you can easily fit 8 people in the cockpit and still have room!)I agree with Paul that you should get the version with the seperate v berth lay out (not the coversion pit lay out maybe this is why he doesn't like his boat).Get cabin top travler,not the console mounted traveler, it is a p.i.a and in the way of moving around the cockpit,I have three winches mounted on the cabin top and I don't have any trouble and as far as th jib sheet,they work well with the 110 sail so I wonder if the other user was having trouble because of the larger sail,I also think the larger jib would adversaly affect the b&r rig as the main sail is the power (somtimes bigger is not better and someone did not understand the enginerring of the b&r rig to be putting oversize sails on it.At any rate I think the boat fits the manufacture design of being a good coastal cruiser. I also like the design as far as engine access is conserned, not to many boat have this much room to get at engine,makes maintance easy!As with any boat you need to see if the design fits your needs.

Seller's Description

The boat has been sitting on land for 2 seasons do to back injury. Wil no be sailing again. Boat is turn key ready. Was properly winterized and stored. Sails and rigging are in good condition with Doyle stack pack and furling Jenny. Boat is very clean. Yanmar engine runs good, 1600 hours. AC, water heater and Frig all work. Will need interior cushions as they where distorted in a storage locker at the marina that had a leaking roof. Was compensated but, never replaced them. They are still available on the Hunter website. Was quoted $6,800 to have them made by a local canvas shop. Cabin top has some gel coat crazing. Auto pilot wheel hub needs replaced.

Equipment: Auto pilot, BBQ grill, LP tank, VHF radio, 4 Life jackets, Microwave, cockpit cushions in good condition, bimini frame and canvas in good condition, helm cover, newer shore power cord newer dock lines and propane heater. Boat is turn key ready to use.

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Comfort Ratio
