Just returned from Maui. Family and I did a Friday night sunset cruise. Highly recommend this trip. Capt. Phil and crew are top notch. They work hard to make sure you have fun. Great food and drink, whale watching and great views. The crew was very careful loading and unloading passengers at the start and end of the trip. Overall a great time. If you want to sail with a competent and caring crew, then Sea Maui is the place to be.

This was my third catamaran snorkel trip and it was the best one yet! First and foremost the staff was amazing. Throughout the trip the entire crew stayed engaged in conversation, and not just with one person. Hands down best part of my week stay here in Maui! Lunch was fantastic-drinks were flowing-& we made it back in a timely manner! Thank you so much to the crew of Sea Maui for being the best part of my vacation!

I had the joy of going on a Sea Maui trip. The boat was large and the vibe the crew had was amazing. They served us breakfast and lunch with a smile, had great drinks and music, and made us laugh the whole time. I chose to do SNUBA, and it was worth every extra penny. If I went back today, I would use Sea Maui and I recommend them to all of my friends who are going.

The crew and management at Sea Maui always go above and beyond to make sure their patrons have the best experience possible. They serve good food and drinks and have a smaller amount of people they go out with and they offer something for everyone. They are def my go to when I’m looking to get out in the beautiful waters of Maui.

Tour-takers praise the crew and say they enjoy the views and the plentiful wildlife, ranging from dolphins to monk seals to turtles. Others caution the ride can get choppy.

The two-hour tours depart Monday through Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Tickets cost approximately $199 per person, and a maximum of 18 passengers are permitted on board. Due to the more adventurous nature of this tour, it's not recommended for children younger than 4 years old, pregnant people or those with back or neck issues. Table of Contents

Short Answer

When taking a catamaran day trip, be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable clothing.

A bathing suit, towel, and water shoes are also essential.

A waterproof camera or phone is a great way to capture memories, and snacks and drinks are always a good idea to bring along.

Don’t forget to bring a bag to store your belongings in while enjoying your day out on the water.

Essential Items for a Catamaran Day Trip

When planning to take a catamaran day trip, it is important to bring the right items to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe experience. Although most catamaran day trips include snacks and drinks, its a good idea to bring a few extra items of your own. Here is a list of essential items to bring on a catamaran day trip:

Sunscreen: Although the sun may not feel overly hot, it is extremely important to protect yourself from the suns harmful rays. It is best to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and to reapply it every two hours or after swimming.

Hat: Wearing a hat is a great way to protect your face from the sun and keep you from getting sunburned. Choose a wide brimmed hat that covers your face and neck for maximum protection.

Sunglasses: Sunglasses are essential for protection from the suns glare and damaging UV rays. Make sure to choose a pair with 100 percent UV protection.

Comfortable clothing: While on a catamaran day trip, you will be spending most of your time outdoors. It is best to dress in lightweight, comfortable clothing that can easily be layered to accommodate changing temperatures.

Light jacket: Although it may not seem like you need a jacket during the summer months, the temperature can quickly drop when out on the open water. Be sure to bring a lightweight jacket with you in case the weather turns cool.

Water: It is essential to stay hydrated while out on a catamaran day trip. Bring a few bottles of water with you, and make sure to drink plenty throughout the day.

Snacks: A few light snacks will help keep your energy up while youre out on the water. Bring a few snacks such as granola bars, trail mix, or dried fruit.

Camera: Dont forget to bring a camera with you to capture those special moments. A waterproof camera is ideal for a catamaran day trip, as it will protect your camera from water damage.

Fully charged phone: Make sure your phone is fully charged before your trip, as you may need it in case of an emergency.

Beach towel and swimsuit: A beach towel and swimsuit are essential if you plan to go swimming during your catamaran day trip.

By bringing these essential items with you, you will be ready to embark on an exciting and memorable catamaran day trip.

Enjoy the ride and have fun!

Sunscreen & Sun Protection

sea trip catamaran

When it comes to a catamaran day trip, sun protection should be at the top of your list of essentials.

Sunscreen is an absolute must, as the sun can be particularly intense out on the open waters.

Make sure to choose a sunscreen with a high SPF and broad-spectrum coverage to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

Additionally, its important to bring a hat and sunglasses to shield your face from the sun.

A wide-brimmed hat is especially helpful, as it can protect your neck and shoulders from the suns rays.

Also, make sure to bring a light jacket or long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin from sunburn.

This will ensure you have an enjoyable and safe catamaran day trip.

Clothing & Accessories

When preparing for a catamaran day trip, its important to keep in mind the clothing and accessories youll need to make the most of the experience.

Firstly, its a good idea to wear comfortable, breathable clothing that won’t be too restrictive when moving around the boat.

A light jacket is also a must, as the temperature can drop quickly on the water.

Additionally, dont forget to bring a hat and sunglasses to protect your face from the suns rays.

A beach towel is also a great idea if you plan to take a dip in the water during your trip.

Finally, dont forget to bring a swimsuit to maximize your fun on the water.

This way, youll be prepared to make the most of your catamaran day trip!

Food & Beverage

sea trip catamaran

Food and beverages are an essential part of any day trip, and a catamaran day trip is no exception.

Bringing enough food and drinks will ensure everyone on board stays happy and hydrated throughout the day.

Depending on the size of your group, it may be a good idea to bring a cooler and enough food and drinks for everyone.

If you plan to have a meal while on the catamaran, make sure to pack non-perishables that are easy to prepare, such as sandwiches, chips, and fruit.

It’s also a good idea to bring some snacks, such as energy bars, nuts, and trail mix, to help keep energy levels up.

When it comes to drinks, make sure to bring plenty of water, as well as other non-alcoholic beverages for everyone onboard.

If you plan to bring alcoholic beverages, make sure to follow the rules of your local area.

Other Essential Items

In addition to the items mentioned above, there are a few other items you should consider bringing on a catamaran day trip.

Depending on the type of catamaran youre taking, you may want to bring a pair of binoculars to spot wildlife, an anchor and line if you plan to stop and swim, a first-aid kit, and a navigation device like a GPS or chart.

Additionally, if you plan to fish, bring a fishing rod, bait, and tackle.

If youre taking your own food, be sure to bring a cooler to keep items cold, along with a water-resistant bag for wet items.

Lastly, dont forget to bring a few garbage bags to help keep the boat clean.

With all of these items, youll be ready for a fun and safe day on the water.

While youre out on the water, make sure to stay aware of your surroundings and follow all safety guidelines provided by your tour captain.

With the right preparation, your day on the catamaran will be a memorable and enjoyable experience!

Optional Items

sea trip catamaran

In addition to the essential items listed above, there are a few optional items you may want to consider bringing on your catamaran day trip.

If you plan on engaging in any water activities, such as snorkeling or swimming, it’s a good idea to bring a pair of water shoes.

They will protect your feet from any sharp objects on the ocean floor.

Additionally, you may want to bring a waterproof bag to store your valuables, such as your phone and camera.

This is especially important if you plan on going swimming.

If you are bringing a cooler, you may want to bring some ice packs to keep your food and drinks cool.

It is also a good idea to bring some large plastic garbage bags to store any wet clothes or items once you return from your trip.

This will help keep your car and house free of sand and saltwater.

If you plan on fishing, you’ll need to bring your fishing rod, bait, and lures.

It’s also a good idea to bring a net, bucket, and other fishing supplies.

If you are bringing children, you may want to bring some activities to keep them entertained, such as coloring books and games.

By taking the time to make sure you have all the necessary items, you can enjoy a hassle-free and memorable catamaran day trip.

With the right items packed, you’ll be ready to embark on your exciting adventure.

Taking Care of Yourself on a Catamaran Day Trip

When embarking on a catamaran day trip, its important to make sure youre taking care of yourself. This means packing all the essential items to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe experience. Here are some of the items you should remember to bring with you:

Sunscreen: Whether youre spending the day on the water or on the beach, its always a good idea to bring sunscreen. A hat and sunglasses can also help protect you from the suns harmful rays.

Clothing: Make sure to wear comfortable clothing that can adapt to different temperatures. Bring a light jacket in case it gets cold outside, as well as a beach towel if you plan to go swimming.

Food and Water: Pack plenty of water and snacks to keep you hydrated and energized throughout the day. If youre bringing a cooler, make sure to fill it with enough food and drinks for everyone.

Camera: Dont forget to bring a camera or phone to capture all the special moments of your catamaran day trip. Make sure your device is fully charged before you leave.

These are just some of the items you should consider bringing on a catamaran day trip.

With these essentials, youll be ready to explore and enjoy your time on the water.

So get ready and prepare for a memorable day out on the sea!

Final Thoughts

A catamaran day trip can be an incredibly fun and rewarding experience, but to make the most of it, you need to come prepared.

With the right items, you can stay safe, comfortable, and have the time of your life.

Sunscreen, comfortable clothing, snacks, a camera, and a fully charged phone are the essentials for any catamaran day trip.

Optional items such as a beach towel and swimsuit can take your experience to the next level.

Now that you know what to bring, it’s time to get ready for your catamaran day trip and create some amazing memories!

Arno & Joyce and their crew, all very knowledgeable guides bring you to the most beautiful snorkel spots of Klein Bonaire. Enjoy the cool breezes, clear blue waters, the relaxed atmosphere and the spectacular underwater world.

Thank’s to all our lovely guests who took the time to write excellent reviews about Sea Cow we’ve been awarded the Hall of Fame award. Double Dip Snorkel Trip

We provide a 3,5 hours guided drift snorkel trip in a relaxed atmosphere. At Klein Bonaire, we make two magnificent different stops and we snorkel in small groups. In between, you will enjoy the great surroundings and breathtaking views while we serve you our homemade snacks/bites and refreshments.

Sunset-Night Snorkel Tour

We provide a 2,5 hours guided snorkel trip in a relaxed atmosphere and no crowds onboard. Discover the awakening nightlife underwater during Bonaire’s amazing sunsets. A mysterious new world opens up, whatever the ocean wants to reveal to you on any given night is always a gift.

Fun Trip to No Name Beach

During this super fun 2.5 hour fun trip where all drinks are unlimited and while enjoying a snack, we sail to Klein Bonaire to let our guests see and feel the bounty white sand at No Name Beach. An unforgettable experience in the crystal clear water and beautiful snow white sand. You can swim there and also snorkel.

Discover Freediving

If you think freediving is like snorkeling (but very deep), you’re wrong. Freediving is a totally different way to experience the underwater world. You dive deeper, stay underwater longer and feel part of the ocean itself. We will teach you the basics and focus on breathing techniques in this discovery.

Here's what we have in store for you!

Whether you are a first-time snorkeler or very experienced, we believe more personal attention results in more fun and better snorkeling. Together we create lasting memories and stories to tell. Our selection of Tours offers something for everyone……….

We, Arno and Joyce, can call ourselves the proud owners of this great company.

In 2020 we packed our things and came to Bonaire with our 2 teenagers and dog. Because we had lived in the same village all our lives we were ready for something totally different. And we went for it.

Living on Bonaire immediately felt very good. The openness of the people, the nature, the relaxed life and of course the beautiful sea so close by every day.

After 2 years of working for a boss, our “entrepreneurial heart” started beating again and we wanted a business for ourselves. What we always had in the Netherlands. We got to know the previous owners of the Sea Cow and that is how we learned that they wanted to sell their company. Our hearts beat faster when we saw what a beautiful company it was. And still is. For years at #1 on Tripadvisor.

Joyce has preferred being underwater to above water in the sea all her life. And Arno loved nothing more than cruising in the Netherlands. Also from a young age.

This fits PERFECT into our lives. So you can’t make us happier.

The Sea Cow is in excellent condition, equipped with spacious comfortable seats and 2 wide vertical stairs so everyone can easily get in and out of the water. We and our team assure you that you will have an unforgettable and enjoyable experience with us on the Sea Cow.

Safety is our top priority and we are equipped with all the necessary safety equipment and requirements. We are also all trained first aid, AED, and oxygen first aiders.

Love our reef!

Oxybenzone is the main active ingredient in most sunscreens. But the same mechanism that makes it filter out ultraviolet light and prevent sunburns in humans makes it lethal to baby coral. Basically, the sunscreen ingredient is shoving coral reefs off the ledge on which they’re already teetering. Learn more in this video!

Lovely snorkeltour not to be missed

Perfect tour to do snorkel with Joyce and her team at Klein Bonaire. Marvellous experience as they give you a lot of tips for the snorkeling itself. Even if you did snorkel before, there is always something to learn.

Amazing day and operator

I can't over express how pleased we were with our snorkeling tour. The staff was friendly, professional, gracious and very aware of participants' abilities and safety. The guides were very courteous and knowledgeable. Top notch, #1 outfit. Not to be missed.

Great boat, great food, graet drinks. These guys understand it. You get to see beautifull underwater life, the guide provides great information and points out all the specials. Love it. Already did two tours with them!

Two Charter Bases – One Fantastic Area

WCM has two charter bases strategically placed near the north and south end of what many consider to be the finest 150 mile stretch of cruising available in North America, if not the world. You can begin and end your charter at either location, taking time to explore the islands, nooks and crannies of this amazing area.

In general the FP Helia 44 is based out of the Loreto/Puerto Escondido location, while the FP Saba 50 most often calls La Paz home. The prices are the same regardless of location, with a small additional delivery fee if the cat must be moved between bases for you to begin your charter.

Learn more about our two bases by selecting below:

Loreto/Puerto Escondido

So where exactly are we going.

About two-thirds of the way down the Sea of Cortez, on Mexico’s famed Baja Peninsula, sit Loreto and Puerto Escondido. Backed by the stunning Sierra de la Giganta range to the west and a spread of islands and dazzling blue waters to the east, this area boasts spectacular sailing, beach exploration, historic communities, gorgeous remote anchorages, and world-class fishing. About 10 miles south of historic and charming Loreto, Mexico’s authentic “City of Magic,” lies Puerto Escondido (hidden port). This naturally enclosed basin has been used for centuries to shelter boats of all kinds, and, after many fits and starts since the 1980’s, now boasts a rapidly developing marina and residential project. It is an ideal base for exploring one of the richest, most starkly beautiful cruising areas on the planet, a place Jacques Cousteau once proclaimed “The Aquarium of The World.”

West Coast Multihulls’ location on the waterfront at Marina Puerto Escondido is home to a small fleet of modern cruising catamarans, along with a full-service marina, boat yard, store, restaurant, etc. This is a magnificent sailing area, boasting 10 islands and dozens of unique anchorages to explore, along with nearby Loreto, chock full of history, dining, and shopping opportunities. This is a part of Mexico that invites you to slow down and soak it all in. Everywhere are the dramatic geology, intense colors and stark contrasts of desert meeting the sea. Fish, rays and whales during the day, coyotes on the beach at night. Puerto Escondido might be only 10 miles from the Loreto airport, but it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle north of the border.

WCM clients are invited to enjoy the crystal clear, warm waters of the Sea of Cortez – numerous offshore islands to explore, dozens of secluded anchorages, refreshing margaritas, and spectacular fishing. Options include destination Learn-to-Sail vacations and captained charters . In all cases you’re looking at the sailing experience of a lifetime. Day after day of “best day ever” kind of sailing, which may ruin you forever. In a good way.

WCM Puerto Escondido Features:

  • The FP Helia 44 is generally berthed at this location
  • Captain/Crewed Charters
  • Stellar learn-to-sail vacation options
  • Easy provisioning
  • Lay days in Loreto, Baja’s “City of Magic”
  • Knowledgeable staff to ensure your comfort and eliminate logistical hassles
  • A well-equipped and growing marina facility with fuel, groceries and restaurant
  • World-class sailing, fishing, paddling, snorkeling, beach exploration and hiking

Options include destination Learn-to-Sail vacations and captained charters . In all cases you’re looking at the sailing experience of a lifetime. Day after day of “best day ever” kind of sailing, which may ruin you forever. In a good way.

WCM La Paz Features:

  • The FP Saba 50 is usually located here, but can be available from the Loreto location as well
  • Lay days in the hopping waterfront tourist zone of La Paz
  • A well-equipped marina facility with fuel, nearby groceries and a few restaurants

Students and charterers will be able to book classes and vacation sailing time through WCM, traveling in and out of Loreto or La Paz via regular flights from across the US, Southern California, or Tijuana (most making use of the no-brainer CBX border crossing in San Diego). Regular flights into Loreto are available from LAX (typically on Alaska Airlines, connecting from anywhere), Ontario, Orange County, and other smaller regional airports. Some connections go through Mexico City or Phoenix. Note that flights in and out of Loreto are often limited to certain days of the week, which can vary seasonally. La Paz has more flight options at more times, and is services by many north american airlines.

The Sea of Cortez is subject to two different major weather regimes, which alternate seasonally. Winter months, typically December through February, bring “Northers,” which can sometimes blow quite strongly, for two to five days at a time. Otherwise, seas and winds are mellow and variable, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. Summer months, June through September, bring intense heat and moderate southerly breezes to the area, easing into the heart of tropical storm season mid August through mid October. The shoulder seasons of mid October through early December, and March through June, exhibit nearly perfect sailing conditions, and spectacular weather for making the most of this amazing area.

We offer a wide selection of cruising catamarans for Capatained Sea of Cortez Catamaran Charters – all especially equipped for your safety and comfort.

This trip exceed our expectations with respect to beautiful water, mountains & remote anchorages. In my opinion, it was far superior to the Bahamas. Sailing was sporadic due to changing winds daily but that’s nature. We more than made up for it with fishing, spearfishing & beautiful sunsets. We ate really well. –Bruced581 via TripAdvisor
What a terrific experience! Guinevere and Eddie made our charter easy and the yacht was in great shape. This area of Baja is outstanding with the beautiful islands and great snorkeling. We saw whales, rays and lots of dolphins while we were on the water. And there and many wonderful little bays to anchor in for all wind conditions. This was our second trip and we’ll be back again! –Chris G via TripAdvisor
I want to let you know that Lance was very thorough and I feel I learned a lot. I have had several instructors over the past two years and he was the best by far. –Lee Johnston

Banana Boat Costa Rica

Had a wonderful excursion to Sealounge Catamaran! The staff was terrific; very accommodating and fun! The beach was beautiful, they prepared a fabulous lunch, and the cocktails on the beach were perfect. I would do this again in a heartbeat!

TripAdvisor

Randall and the crew were awesome! They took us to a private beach where we ate, played with the jet skis, and snorkeled. They also took us to watch the sunset before taking us back to the dock! Highly recommended!!

We used Sealounge Catamaran for a boat party and they were great! The crew was awesome and very helpful, we explored a private beach where they cooked for us and rode jetskis. Plenty of tour for a large crowd and a nice roof that you can jump from. Definitely would recommend to others!

Great experience and service!I'll make this quick. What was provided for us: yacht, diving, snorkel, jetski, catered food, drinks, snacks, private beach. The staff were very friendly and service was great.

This beach is completely secluded and accessible only by boat, it nearly takes your breath away as you realize this is where you will be spending your day! Randall and his team are professional and extremely detail oriented. The beach is wonderful, white sand and the jungle flows right into the sand.

>>More details

Why choose martinique for a sea trip .

There are many reasons to choose Martinique for your vacation. The island has a rich history and culture, beautiful beaches and scenery, and is a great place to relax and enjoy the Caribbean atmosphere. Martinique is also the ideal starting point for visiting neighboring islands. It’s easy to get from Martinique to Guadeloupe or Dominica, and it’s even possible to visit St. Lucia on a day trip by boat.

The island of Martinique is known for its beautiful beaches and lush landscapes, but there is much more to explore below the surface. The island is home to a wide variety of aquatic life, from colorful fish to playful dolphins. If you want to explore the natural wonders of Martinique’s waters, there are many ways to do so. Discover Martinique in a different way: take a catamaran cruise, go snorkeling or scuba diving, or just relax on the beach and enjoy the view.

Which boat to choose for a sea trip in Martinique?

There are many boats to choose from for your Martinique sailing trip, including catamarans, sailboats and motorboats. When choosing a boat for a sea trip, time constraints and travel plans must be taken into account. Some boats make it easy to explore several ports of call at once, while others allow you to spend days at sea or stop at quiet coves and beaches out of sight.

Catamarans are two-hulled boats that are stable and fast, making them ideal for crossing open waters. They also have a smoother ride on the waves and on the water. The best part is that you don’t need an experienced captain; all you have to do is sit back and relax while your local skipper takes you around the north or south coast of Martinique, showing you the secrets of the flower island as you go.

If you are traveling in large numbers, catamarans offer the most space. The choice of your catamaran will depend on the number of people to invite. Count up to 15 people maximum for a half-day, a day or a weekend catamaran cruise in Martinique.

Sailboats depend on wind power to move through the water, while motorboats use gasoline engines. On sailboats, you’ll find more amenities and comfort than a motorboat. If you plan to take a lot of gear with you, or if you like to fish or snorkel during your trip, this type of boat might be your best option. Sailing is a great way to explore and access many places.

Motorboats, on the other hand, offer less seating. Sometimes only three to four seats are available. Once again, it all depends on the size of the boat and its capacity.

What characterizes a catamaran?

A catamaran is a multihull boat generally composed of two hulls connected by a frame. Catamarans can be simple and cheap or very sophisticated and expensive. It all depends on the budget you wish to allocate to your stay in Martinique aboard a catamaran.

Some people simply call all multihulls “catamarans”. This is technically incorrect, but it may be easier than trying to explain that there are different types of catamarans. Catamaran is a term that refers to the specific style of catamaran. Built for use in the world of water sports (catamaran racing), it is a boat designed to be fast and efficient. The first catamarans were built in wood, but today they are generally built in fiberglass or other composite materials, ideal for a catamaran ride.

The construction of a catamaran usually consists of an inflexible skeleton to which are attached outer “shells” (or skins) of plywood or fiberglass. Catamarans usually have more than one hull, with the number of hulls ranging from two to eight. A narrower catamaran can offer better performance than a single-hull boat, but at the expense of stability.

A monohull is less stable than a catamaran because it has only one hull on the water. Monohulls are built to go in a straight line as fast as possible, and they do it very well. However, they spend most of their time on the water with only one hull out of the water – which is not good for performance or stability. This is essentially why catamarans perform better than monohulls.

The "Pelagia" catamaran

Build at la Rochelle in the building site of Nautitech, PELAGIA es a cruising habitable catamaran of 62′ (circa 19m) ideal for navigating in the warm waters of the Caribbean with a shaded exterior area. Its design was created to carry around 28 passengers and 2 crew members per day for coastal navigation. The catamaran is equipped with 4 cabins and 4 bathrooms.

Its performance under sail will allow you to travel fast and in comfort, to enjoy the program of activities. PELAGIA is also very pleasant due to its deck layout, sunbathing area, and its “trampoline” in the front of the boat. It has a large cockpit very well protected from the sun, the rain, and the ocean spray, with a great “lounge spirit” salon with a sofa, and background music. PELAGIA hosts around its table all passengers on board for unforgettable moments. It allows you to discover, in a day, the universe of a trip on a boat. It can be hired privately according to your needs.

What to Wear on a Catamaran – What You Should Bring!

Catamaran on the water

Sailing trips have emerged as an exciting and budget-friendly option for regular land vacations.

However, sailing trips are also unique and very different from land-based vacations in many important ways.

Therefore, it is important to plan carefully so that you are not left with regret in the middle of a picture-perfect sail.

One of the areas where a lot of novice sailors tend to go overboard is packing suitable clothes during their sailing trips.

I have been witness to chartering parties not only packing way more than what they would need aboard the boat but also packing the wrong kinds of clothes.

I cannot help but emphasize that a sailing trip is very different from other holidays as space is in short supply.

The mantra should always be to pack light and pack right. In this article, therefore, my aim shall be to educate novice sailors on what to wear on a catamaran .

Table of Contents

Catamaran is Different Than a Monohull.

There was a time when monohulls were the undisputed kings of the sailing industry on account of their unmatched sailing characteristics. Not anymore.

Boat designers have, over the years, improved and refined sailing cats so much that they can easily rival the best monohulls.

On the other hand, catamarans have a strong advantage when it comes to space and comfort.

You would have more and bigger cabins on a 40 feet catamaran when compared to a similar-sized monohull.

In addition, amateur sailors truly appreciate the stability of a sailing catamaran as it is not prone to pitching like monohulls.

In other words, if you are looking for a more relaxing sailing trip instead of a performance-driven sail, a catamaran is clearly the better option.

It would accommodate more of your friends and family, as well as offer them larger cabin spaces.

Sailing on a catamaran means that you can afford to pack a little more generously compared to a monohull and enjoy your evening wear in ample social spaces.

Sailboat on the water

What to Wear for A Short Trip?

A short trip aboard a catamaran can be either a day sail or a weekend trip. For day sails, of course, you do not need to pack anything at all except your sunscreen lotion.

Bikini on the sand

It is simply too short a trip to require you to change aboard the boat. Typically, you should look to dress casually.

Even on a weekend-long sailing trip, you should look to keep things extremely light.

Such sailing trips are long enough to require you to change but not long enough to warrant having your clothes washed.

Ideally, you should pack no more than one extra set of clothes.

If the trip does not involve any onshore trips, then you may get by with just an extra set of swimwear.

Depending on the weather forecast, you may also pack in a light water-resistant jacket to guard against wind chill and rain.

What to Bring for An Extended Trip

An extended sailing trip, on the other hand, one that lasts at least a week, requires you to carefully plan the clothes to pack.

A lot of the decisions about packing would greatly depend on the amenities available on the boat as well as the destination and expected weather.

Set of casual clothes

For example, if the chartered catamaran has a decent laundry facility onboard, then you may consider packing lightly.

Similarly, if your sailing trip also involves anchoring at popular coastal towns and visiting trendy bars, restaurants, and cafes, then you may consider packing in a skirt or trousers.

Other than that, you would be safe by packing light and casual wear.

Some people, especially ladies, are a little averse to having their underwear dried out in public. To get over this predicament, you can pack in a set of underwear for each day of your trip.

You would also need no more than 3-4 sets of bathing suits for the entire duration of your sail.

Always remember to pack in a light but effective jacket made of synthetic material for rainy and windy days.

Do I Need to Wear Shoes?

Flipflops on the sand

Most of the time, you would be walking around barefoot aboard the boat. However, boat shoes and flip-flops are obviously required on a sailing trip, especially if you would be making on-shore trips.

Make sure your boat shoes are light with a soft rubber sole.

Hard soles are not only unnecessary, but they may also scuff up the boat’s surface.

For those who are planning adventure activities on-shore during their trip, lightweight sports shoes would do nicely.

Do take care to make sure that your flip-flops provide a firm grip and are anti-slip.

What is Not Recommended to Wear?

Sailing trips are all about keeping things light and casual.

Its core philosophy is to get by with as little as possible. Therefore, anything that goes against this philosophy should be strictly avoided.

Jacket for the evening

For example, there is really no need to bring your expensive formal wear when you are leaving on a sailing trip.

Whether it is formal evening gowns for women or jackets for men, these clothes are best kept away from your packing list.

Similarly, formal shoes and high heels do not belong to a sailing vacation.

For men, it is suggested that they pack no more than a pair of jeans for their trip, as they are not only heavy but also unnecessary aboard the boat.

List of Recommended Wear

1) Clothing:

  • Casual dresses for women to throw over their swimsuits.
  • Ladies should also pack in tank tops and shorts.
  • Men should pack in nylon or synthetic and airy shirts and boating shorts .
  • Swimming suits for ladies.
  • Men should pack in swimming trunks.
  • In addition, women should pack in a pair of leggings for cold days.
  • A suitable number of underwear.
  • In addition, both men and women would need fast-drying towels .
  • A light nylon jacket would suffice for rainy days.

2) Footwear:

For an extended sailing trip, women would need to pack:

  • A pair of soft-soled sandals for trips ashore
  • A pair of boat shoes to wear on board the boat.
  • A pair of flip flops

3) Other accessories:

In addition to your normal toiletries, do not forget to pack in

  • Your favorite hairbrush
  • A quality pair of polarized sunglasses
  • A wide-brimmed hat or even a baseball cap
  • Plenty of sunscreens
  • A dry bag .

Additional tips

1) While a hairdryer is useful, you should consider not lugging it on your sail as it can really tax the batteries aboard your boat.

2) Do not pack your clothes in hard luggage. Make use of soft luggage such as duffel bags . They take up less space and do not risk causing scuff marks on the boat.

3) As far as possible, make sure the clothes you pack are made of fiber that not only keeps you comfortable but also dries fast.

4) Since you would be spending a lot of time on the water, you would likely partake in water-based activities. If you do not like the idea of using rental snorkel gear , make sure you pack one of your own.

By now, you should have a good idea about how important it is to pack light and pack right when it comes to sailing trips. Packing light also makes your trip more enjoyable as you focus more on the vacation rather than looking after your belongings. However, it is also important that you pack the right type of gear such as quality polarized sunglasses , fast-drying towels , etc.

Great article about something as simple as packing but is imperative for boating.

It is so true about limited space compared to a land trip and because of where you are going, the type and amount of clothing are different.

Excellent list break down to help keep it simple and to the point.

Yes, you are right, a land trip is totally different than an offshore trip. I always recommend packing light no matter what, just bring clothes accordingly to the destination and the weather.

Thank you for the comment and wish you a great day:)

Hi Daniella, What a fascinating read. I’ve been reading your “Best Anchorages In The Bahamas” bog too. You’ve got me in a holiday mood now. We travelled to Mallorca the other year and saw some stunning catamarans and my wife and I talked about having a catamaran holiday sometime. I’d go for the week but my wife thought a few days would be enough for her due to the lack of luggage she likes to take. haha!! Where would you suggest is the best around the Mediterranean for a Catamaran holiday as we both love the Mediterranean? Looking forward to your reply, Simon.

I am glad my articles got you in a holiday mood, this is the purpose of my website:)

Mallorca is absolutely beautiful, I was there with my husband and my two children about two years ago and we had such good times!

The most popular region for catamarans is the Caribbean and the BVI because of the amount of coral reefs, the shallow water, the culture, restaurants, and music.

In the Mediterranean, the most popular areas to sail are Greece and Croatia because the sailing conditions are excellent, the cuisine is absolutely delicious and there is an incredible amount of historical sights . What more can you ask for?

If you need more information, don’t hesitate to contact me, I’ll be very happy to help you:)

Thank you for the comment and wish you a wonderful day!

It amazes me that you mention the room on board a catamaran is so much more spacious than a monohull. On the face of it, your typical boat seems bigger. Maybe it’s just that I’ve seem smaller cat’s than what your talking about. Anyway, I can’t imagine bringing by formal ware onto any type of boat other than a cruise ship! Shorts & thongs for me! (yes, thongs as I’m an Aussie, not a thong as it’s known in the UK!!)

Well, if you compare a monohull and a cat at the same length, the catamaran is much bigger. No doubt about it:)

It is not unusual that people wear formal clothes on a boat, but only for special entertainments, and the boat has to be enough big in order to welcome a large amount of guest. While on a cruise ship you’ll have to wear formal clothes for dinner:)

Thank you for the comment and wish you a great day!

Thanks for the information! My husband and I decided that we deserve some unusual rest and he offered me to take a private catamaran tour which will be very romantic. Luckily I have boat shoes, but I did not know that hard soles may scuff up the boat surface. I will need to check if my shoes suit this kind of rest. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the tip to get boat shoes that are light with a soft rubber sole. My wife and I are thinking of going on catamaran tours, and we would like to have all the materials that we would need. Our current flip-flops are kind of slippery, so we’ll look for something that is more of an anti-slip.

You are very welcome; it’s a pleasure:) Yes, as I have mentioned in the article, it is crucial to wear comfortable shoes that grip well the deck as it usually quite slippy onboard. Some flip flops feature anti-slip soles and are incredibly comfortable. These are also great to wear on boats!

Thank you for the comment and wish you a fantastic day!

I like that you mention what’s proper when going on boating trips because my wife and I have never been on one so it’s useful information for us to keep in mind. I like that you point out the differences between a short trip and an extended trip. Our trip will be short, but maybe after this one, we’ll want to consider a longer trip. Thanks!

I am glad you found the article useful, thank you! I am sure your wife and you will enjoy the sailing trip very much:)

Because these mega structure of mass tourism offers competitive prices only if you stay on board. you will have to pay to get ashore to visit a local art market, pay to improve everyday life and still pay to even just take a picture with the captain.  Add up together all the options and the privates cruises start to be very competitive.
