Family Owned Yachtmaker: Rossinavi of Tuscany

We take a look at the Rossinavi and how important those iconic three stripes are to the world of luxury yachting.

numptia yacht owner

Behind the three stripes that mark the signature of Rossinavi lies the story of the Tuscan yacht manufacturer. Three simple, yet elegant lines, form the seal of this outstanding family-owned shipyard. Three pure lines that evoke the superposed decks of a yacht seen from aft. Three proud stripes that recall the tradition of seamanship as in the rank insignia of a first officer. Three lines for three generations of Rossi family members. Three peaceful lines that elicit the rising sun on the horizon, representing a rising shipyard.

Rossinavi Prince Shark M/Y Polaris

This is all what Rossinavi is, a proud tradition of shipbuilding, a family committed to quality and excellence, and an invitation to explore beyond the horizon. Since its foundation in 1980, Cantiere Rossi has always been a family owned and managed company; and the Rossi family is quite proud to have full control over the destiny of the shipyard, considering this as a key added value on the market. During the Eighties, Rossi built passenger vessels and also produced steel and aluminum hulls and superstructures on behalf of reputed shipyards. Slowly but surely, the Rossi family built itself a strong reputation of quality and innovation, as the company started designing and producing state of the art mechanical and hydraulic systems to handle luxury tenders and personal watercrafts on board superyachts.

Rossinavi Prince Shark M/Y Param Jamuna

By 2006, the family had acquired new production sites with new offices and boardroom on the port of Viareggio. The Rossis were then determined to leave their role of subcontractors and start to compete with major yacht builders. To achieve this transformation and conquest, the new brand «Rossinavi» was created in 2007, loyal to Rossi Group’s management and philosophy based on quality, simplicity and elegance. One year later, the Rossinavi brand made its official debut with the launching of M/Y SOUTH , a 54 meter displacement motor yacht that made a statement for the Rossi family as they entered the world of custom yacht manufacturers. The second order to be honored by Rossinavi was the 70 meter M/Y NUMPTIA , designed by Spadolini and delivered in 2011. Within the following three years, Rossinavi would be commissioned and delivering five yachts ranging from 45 to 49 meters.

Rossinavi M/Y Numptia

The young and dynamic management at the helm of Rossinavi is always up to taking a new challenge and is permanently developing new projects with a team of skilled workmen for the most demanding customers. All Rossinavi yacht projects are driven by innovation, yet always respect the founding principles of the shipyard: tradition, passion for craftsmanship and high accuracy. Beyond passion, it is actually the love of yachts that strikes every single person who has the opportunity to visit the shipyard. A strong love that members of the Rossi family are keen to share with their passionate clients, which they see as ambassadors of the Rossi name across the seas of the world. In 2015, while getting M/Y Taransay ready for her launch, Rossinavi recorded orders for three new yachts to be delivered in 2017, marking an ongoing success in the field of steel and aluminum custom yacht building.

The reasons behind this commercial success don’t lie solely in Rossinavi’s marketing. It is quite the opposite in fact. What makes a future yacht owner entrust Rossinavi with the build of a new yacht is the Rossi family’s philosophy and commitment to excellence. At Rossinavi, innovation could never be taken as a synonym of improvisation. Although very keen on taking new challenges in yacht building, the Rossinavi team would always study a new project from a meticulous and attentive engineer’s point of view. The shipyard’s in-house technical department and the world acclaimed naval architects who collaborate with Rossinavi ensure the success of the new build before the first metal sheet is even laid in the yard, thanks to detailed 3-D modeling of the entire yacht, foreseeing every single technical and aesthetic detail, including what is never seen by the owner, such as piping, wiring and mechanical installations.

Rossinavi M/Y Aslec

One of Rossinavi’s strengths is its strong background in metalworking. The Rossi family started over 35 years ago in the ship building industry as skilled metalworkers and they have developed all yacht manufacturing activities from their core knowhow. As such, all metalwork, including the cutting, framing and nesting of the steel and aluminum plates is made in-house. Another exceptional feature of the yard is the «Officina Meccanica Rossinavi», a R&D center and mechanical workshop where Rossinavi is able to produce all the chandlery, mechanical and hydraulic systems, often custom, needed for the production of a yacht.

Like the most famous Dutch yacht manufacturers that are well known to our readers, Rossinavi can pride itself on being one of the very few custom yacht producers in the world with all manufacturing processes and supplies controlled in-house. This ensures a high quality end product with maximum comfort, performances, ease of maintenance and durability. Actually, at Rossinavi, all technical aspects of a yacht are treated with the same care and demands of quality as the finishing aesthetic details, so that what is never seen on a Rossinavi vessel is just as well made as what stands out to the eye of the owner and guests.

Rossinavi M/Y 2 Ladies

A Family Business Above All Else

The first generation of Rossi yacht manufacturers is embodied by brothers Claudio (the «yacht builder») and Paride (the «metalwork genius»), who founded Cantiere Rossi, which would later become Rossinavi, in the early Eighties. They were later joined by their older brother Riccardo, rich of 25 years of experience in the ship building sector, who naturally imposed himself as the production manager / quality control manager of the shipyard.

The second generation sees Federico and Claudia, the children of Claudio Rossi, progressively taking the helm of Rossinavi; the first as acting general manager of the company, and the latter operating as marketing and communication manager. While their cousin Veronica, Paride’s daughter, works as the Service Manager of the shipyard, after moving up the ranks from secretary and learning all the specifics of yacht manufacturing and refitting.

Rossinavi Ketos M/Y Vellimari

Federico and Claudia both have children who now represent the third generation of Rossi yacht manufacturers. Given the passion of the whole family for the art of shipbuilding, there is a safe bet that these children will also, someday, be part of Rossinavi’s success story. Until then, you are all invited to meet the Rossis and join this outstanding family of passionate shipbuilders to give shape to your own family’s yacht dreams.

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 32 – Spring 2012

Rossinavi consolidates its position among the Gotha of metal built superyachts in the course of the latest International Boat show in Monaco with Numptia a 70 metre motor yacht.

Rossinavi Numptia

Rossi boat yard started up in the last quarter of the preceding century and continues to perform in the superyacht segment with a simple company policy of doing the one step at a time, and it definetely seems to have paid off adamantly. Prior to the period the yard specialized in carpentry and joinery and started to build metal boats only in the 80’s which were in the main passenger ships only. Ten years later the shipyard becomes known for the quality of refits carried out on large yachts as well as for the designing and manufacturing of hydraulic systems to launch and recover tenders from large yachts.

Today a good forty years later Rossinavi comes back anew in brand and fame. With more than 15 boats between 24 and 45 metres and approximately 60 to which the yard built superstructures and hulls for third parties as well ranging between 20 and 70 metres.

Rossinavi has become one of the star players in the successful “made in Italy” scenario for superyachts across the world. With two operational ship building yards, the first and foremost of which is a historical one situated in Viareggio and the other in Pisa also in Italy where currently four models are under construction, a 45 metre semi-displacing motor yacht, a 46 metre by Mulder Design, a 47 metre by Team for Design and the innovative Ketos 48 metre also by the same design studio. In addition to the above mentioned there are two in advanced project phase namely a 46 metre classic and a 55 metre which has stemmed from “South” that has already opened the doors leading to fame.

The latest cruising one is instead Numptia. Designed by the team made up of Spadolini & Salvagni Naval Architects, Numptia was in fact exhibited at the latest Monaco International Yacht Show, sporting her four elegantly designed decks plus sun deck with a steel hull and light alloy superstructure.

Her elegant and sober look stands out strongly from flowing glossy topsides. The interiors are representative of the owner’s personality bearing well defined design solutions of strong impact with a layout which stands clear of traditional diagrams, but which has privileged the continuity of different spaces linked to one another through a sense of fluid connection which is therefore free of the kind of confusion enhanced by excessive compartmentalisation of the space available. Similarly everything from furniture to accessories and décor as well as lighting has been carefully selected to enhance greater comfort, for the owner and guests to enjoy, in an environment which is equally welcoming and pleasing to the eye.

Every deck sports a different appeal which the architects have harmoniously blended together through a stylistic continuum where rice paper scrolls, galuchat, bronze and Murano glass objects have been wisely inserted to blend with natural materials that are chromatically different like ebony and teak are to marble and stone.

The furniture has been “tailor made” as per the owner’s wishes including embellishing seating arrangements for the saloons and the impressive media lounge in which to enjoy unforgettable moments watching films. There are many convivial areas in which to relax on board along the upper decks destined to day use, whereas the lower deck hosts the guests quarters as well as some of the crew’s. As normally happens the owner’s suite takes up most of the bow section of the main deck with plenty of natural light pouring in from large window panels and features a really amazing bathroom containing a stone sculptured bath tub which stands out in contrast with dark marble flooring.

Furthermore several areas dedicated for one’s well being are situated between the bridge and upper deck, where the owner and his guests can gather between work out sessions in the gym and pleasant moments spent in the wellness parlours of choice: massage, sauna, or hammam, while tan fans have a number of options to chose from as well all with ocean view. Additionally Numptia also sports a dedicated sun deck which is part covered by a hard top and several generously sized sun pads. She almost tops 19 knots and therefore can offer fast week end cruising but also more demanding crossings thanks to a range of 7,500 nautical miles.

Numptia Super Yacht

numptia yacht owner

Those in the market for a megayacht are already familiar with the 70-meter (229-foot) Numptia. There isn’t a luxury yachting magazine on the planet that hasn’t noticed it. Some at the upper end allocated as much as 25 pages of opulence-oozing imagery and painstaking scrutiny of every minute fact to this steel-hulled, aluminum-structured floating residence.

numptia yacht owner

And those who didn’t get enough of Numptia in the printed media, had an opportunity to view it at the 21st Monaco Yacht Show in September, where it was hailed as one of the highlights among the 100 top meagayachts from around the globe.

numptia yacht owner

The vessel launched in April in Genoa, after a three-year building process. It was completely custom-built for an unnamed Italian-born American businessman who wanted it for his multi-generational family.

numptia yacht owner

Two specific things about Numptia have attracted the interest of the yachting world. Every aspect of Numptia was custom-created with the highest, most exquisite quality of design, materials, craftsmanship and functional performance. Even in the megayacht circles, this kind of grandeur and obsessive attention to quality and detail are rare.

numptia yacht owner

The other unusual aspect is the fact that the owner selected a relatively unknown shipyard, Rossinavi Yachts of Viareggio to build it, and a little-known designer Salvagni Architetti of Rome to design the interiors.

numptia yacht owner

Working closely with the owner, Achille Salvagni combined modern sensibilities with touches of traditional luxury to achieve a timeless feel of well-being. Every piece of furniture, every surface treatment, every doorknob and hinge was custom-designed for Numptia. Silk carpets woven in Tibet, solid marble in the steam bath, quartz floors in the galley, and an oval dining table covered in riveted alpaca nickel silver are just a few examples.

numptia yacht owner

Exterior design of the vessel was completed by Design Studio Spadolini of Florence.

numptia yacht owner

Numptia features lavish rooms for up to 12 guests and includes an impressive master suite, a VIP suite, three queen-size double cabins and one twin stateroom. The owner’s suite includes a bedroom, TV area, reading room, his and hers dressing rooms and a bathroom with the solid-marble bath. Numerous common areas, sundecks, a spa deck plus crew accommodations and all behind-the-scenes space complete the spacious picture.

Billionaire fights to dock his boat on water behind his house. His 164-foot boat, that is.

The love of the water, and a mega-yacht to enjoy it, is putting one resident at odds with village of north palm beach leaders..

numptia yacht owner

For some people, the ultimate Florida lifestyle is a waterfront house , a private dock and a boat parked next to it. But what if that boat is a mega-yacht , and the mega-yacht stretches 164 feet?

That's the conundrum facing the Village of North Palm Beach.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County, with only 13,000 full-time residents, has an identity so tied to the water that a ship's steering wheel is the village's emblem.

But it's that love of the water that is putting one resident at odds with village leaders.

For the past several years, homeowner Michael Bozutto has been battling the village for the right to park his 164-foot Westport, dubbed Honey, behind a home he owns at 932 Shore Drive.

The house, built in 1961, is a one-story, ranch-style property with three bedrooms on a half-acre lot. Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house in 2014, according to Palm Beach County property records.

Lawsuit rooted in dispute over where to dock mega-yacht

What makes this plain house special is its location. It's on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Bozzuto's motor yacht.

Since Bozutto bought Honey for an undisclosed sum a decade ago, he mostly has parked it at the Old Port Cove Marina, near Tiger Woods' 155-foot showy mega-yacht, ironically dubbed Privacy.

More recently, Bozzuto has wanted to park Honey alongside his Shore Drive house, one of four houses he owns in the village. While Bozzuto keeps some personal property at the Shore Drive house, he lives at a house he owns at Harbour Isles Court.

Village officials warned Bozzuto he can't park Honey at 932 Shore Drive because boats can only be parked on docks behind houses that are occupied by the homeowner.

But village rules do not define the word "occupied." For instance, the rules do not state that occupied means the house is a residence where the owner lives. Village rules also contain no restrictions on the size of boats that can be kept at private docks.

After years of pushing back against what he believes are fuzzy rules, Bozzuto in March filed a lawsuit against the village.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

He alleged the municipality is illegally depriving him of his property rights because nothing in the village code prevents him from mooring Honey at his house. He is asking a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge to rule that he has a constitutional right to dock Honey there.

Gregory Coleman, Bozzuto's West Palm Beach attorney, said the village has plenty of waterfront homes with yachts parked behind them. But Coleman said the village is illegally blocking Bozzuto from docking Honey at his house because the village is bending to pressure from a handful of neighbors who think the boat is too big.

The selective enforcement is wrong, said Coleman, a former president of the Florida Bar.

"He's a very under-the-radar guy who doesn't cause anybody any problems," Coleman said of Bozzuto. "He pays his property taxes, and he wants to be left alone by the village of North Palm Beach. Unfortunately, they are singling Mike out."

Neither Leonard Rubin, the village's longtime attorney, nor Village Manager Chuck Huff responded to requests for comment.

Eric Stettin, a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who is representing the village in the Bozzuto lawsuit, said he could not comment on pending litigation.

What good is a man's castle if he can't have a boat in his moat?

Coleman's lawsuit describes the conflict as a battle over property rights, but real estate and yachting experts say it's also a sign of the times.

As wealthy new residents pour into the county wanting all the perks of the Sunshine State, they want a boat to go along with their waterfront homes and golf club memberships. Some longtime residents fear Palm Beach County is turning into a playground for billionaires, to the detriment of everyday people who also want to live in sunshine and peace.

This conflict between Old Florida and new money is an ever-present tension, but even seasoned yacht brokers say they've never seen interest in luxury yachts quite as strong as it is now.

"What we've seen in the marketplace right after COVID in the yachting industry, and especially the superyacht segment, is the most incredible growth ever seen in the history of yachting to date," said Shannon McCoy, a luxury yacht advisor and broker with Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach.

"A lot of people are moving here with serious money," added Pascal Savoy, U.S. managing director of Camper & Nicholsons International yacht brokers in Fort Lauderdale.

While in the past Palm Beach County was not considered lively enough for some buyers, Savoy said the county's growing sophistication is putting it on the map in a way never seen before.

"It's a mini-Monaco for us," Savoy said.

Prices for mega-yachts can range from $18 million to $60 million, or many times that, for the largest and most decked-out mega-yachts, Savoy said.

While some yachts can be glitzy, a 164-foot Westport is considered a more low-profile boat, Savoy added.

Michael Bozzuto's interests: Houses, boats and philanthropy

Bozzuto is no newcomer to North Palm Beach. He's been a resident of the village for 20 years.

He is the billionaire owner of a family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut, and an investor and philanthropist who likes to collect houses and yachts, Coleman said.

In addition to the four North Palm Beach houses and several yachts he owns, Bozzuto in February paid a whopping $31.1 million for a house in the Town of Palm Beach Shores. The house, which has two docks, sits just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet.

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

Coleman said there is plenty of room for other boaters to navigate the waterway when Honey is parked at the Shore Drive house in North Palm Beach. And while other people may not have as large a yacht, there are other sizeable yachts parked on docks behind other North Palm Beach homes, too, he added.

At a 2017 village council meeting, then-Mayor Darryl Aubrey commented on the issue, according to the complaint.

"When I didn't live here full time, I had a boat sitting in my dock, I was gone nine months of the year. I don't see how you can say that someone has to be in a residence year-round, seems to be some interpretation of occupant, there would be an enormous number of violations," Aubrey said.

Another member of the village council asked if the village had a definition now, the complaint said.

Rubin, the village attorney, replied: "No, we don't," according to the lawsuit.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

Palm Beach County's waterways run deep, and they are popular

The yacht docking dispute is particularly timely, given the scarcity of dock space for boats of all sizes.

The most convenient place to park a boat is on the water behind a house, brokers say. But not every waterway or channel can accommodate the draft, or depth, of a mega-yacht.

However, the dock behind Bozzuto's Shore Drive house can.

Not only is the Westport not known for its deep hulls, but the waterway also is typical of northern Palm Beach County, which boasts deep water and easy access to the ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet, said Coleman, a lifelong boater.

"In Palm Beach County, they have deeper water, and it allows people to have larger yachts," Savoy agreed.

But not every waterway is deep enough for every boat.

McCoy said she specializes in helping advise potential yacht owners about the county's varied water depths before they buy a house, if they plan to dock their yacht behind it.

If yacht owners don't have a private dock, the other option is a marina. But marina space is hard to find, with many dock berths reserved for months in advance, McCoy said.

Despite the challenges of owning a boat and finding a place to dock it, yacht brokers say demand continues.

They see interest continuing from business executives moving here with their families as they relocate their companies to Palm Beach County. There's also a growing demand for yachts among female buyers, McCoy added.

They also see younger mega-yacht buyers, some even in their early 30s. This is in sharp contrast to the mostly older buyers in the past, Savoy said.

Palm Beach County may not be as go-go as Miami-Dade County when it comes to showy ships, but if interest continues, "it's coming," Savoy said. "You're going to attract bigger yachts."

Put another way: "No one needs a boat, but everyone needs a boat," McCoy said. "It's the ultimate lifestyle."
