The biggest sportfish superyachts in the world

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The next few years are shaping up well for the super-sportfish market with the Global Order Book reporting 26 projects currently on order or in build. Some special mentions include the Viking 90 flagship, a 24 metre sportfish chase boat underway at Vanquish and Royal Huisman 's mega 52 metre sportfish hull Project 406 which was announced in 2021. As we patiently await this new wave of uber-luxe fishing vessels, we take a look at the biggest already afloat...

1. Bad Company

The 43.9 metre sportfish yacht Bad Company (née Marlena ) was delivered in 1998 and was the largest sportfish in the world at the time. She changed ownership in 2013 and sent to Spain where she received a comprehensive refit and lengthened by six metres to her current length of 43.9 metres. ABS classed and MCA compliant, this all-aluminium superyacht accommodates up to 11 guests in a master suite, VIP, two doubles and one twin with a Pullman berth, all with LCD television screens and full en suite bathroom facilities.

2. Mea Culpa

Despite her size, Mea Culpa can reach a top speed of 23.5 knots thanks to a pair of 2735hp MTU 12V4000M90 diesel engines. The McMullen & Wing superyacht, designed by Jack Sarin , measures in at a hefty 42.28 metres. Mea Culpa can accommodate up to eight guests and six crew in her interiors, which have been designed by Marnell Corrao . She boasts a deck jacuzzi on board for post-fishing relaxation.  Mea Culpa was delivered in 2003.

3. Forty Love

Forty Love , formerly Don Elegante , began life in 1988 when she was commissioned by her first owner. According to BOAT Pro, the yacht ended up being reconstructed on an existing hull built by Westport in 1990 and was finally finished in 2002. Today, the 42 metre sportfish motor yacht sails under the name Forty Love and was the recipient of a two million-euro refit in 2020. Highlights include a main dining area with 360-degree views as well as a swimming platform with steps down into the water.

Lanakai , built by Yachting Developments , is the newest addition to the list of mega sportfish yachts. Delivered in 2017, the 39.5 metre superyacht is constructed entirely from carbon fibre to a design by Michael Peters  and can reach a top speed of 30 knots thanks to the power of two 3100.0hp MTU diesel engines. Spread over four decks, Lanaki can accommodate 10 guests and six crew. Her interiors, designed by Naylor Booth , sport an alliance of finely crafted American walnut joinery and muted fabrics. Lanakai boasts two saloons within her spacious interiors as well as a bar and stainless-steel aft deck barbecue for preparing the catch of the day.

5. Red Sapphire

Dutch shipyard Heesen , known today for its sporty steel and aluminium hulls, launched a series of sportfishing superyachts including Red Sapphire which splashed in 1999. The 39 metre is easy to spot with its distinct triangular form and a red stripe that runs the length of the yacht. Built for speed, she was capable of reaching speeds of 35 knots back in the day, powered by twin MTU 16V4000M90 engines.

6. Obsessions

The 38 metre Obsessions is the second Heesen built to make it into this round-up of supersized sportfish yachts. Launched in 1996, she arrived three years earlier than her sportfishing sister Red Sapphire . She was designed by Dutch studio Mulder Design and can sleep up to 10 guests.

The 37.19 metre sportfish Mary P was delivered in 2008 by Trinity Yachts . Built to satisfy the ultimate fisherman, this custom yacht incorporates a Simrad forward-looking sonar in the bow and a transom specifically designed to back down on fish at 10 knots. Twin 2,550hp Caterpillar diesel engines give her a top speed of 25 knots. Mary P was designed by Doug Sharp  together with Geoff Van Aller and is the only sportfish yacht to be built to ABS class. Her interiors have been designed by Judy Bell Davis and she can sleep up to eight guests and three crew below deck. On board amenities include a skylounge, bar and a formal dining area forward.

Boss was delivered by Dutch shipyard Feadship 1988 under the name Gallant Lady - the fifth in a series of yachts owned by the late Jim Moran. When she was launched she measured 35.35 metres in length but has since been extended to 36.27 metres. The yacht was refitted at Palmer Johnson in 1999 and can sleep up to 10 guests across four staterooms.

To hook the world’s biggest fighting fish, in the words of Chief Brody in the classic 1975 movie Jaws , “You’re going to need a bigger boat.”

Privately owned fishing boats won’t come any bigger than this astonishing 171-foot super-luxury sportfisherman, set to claim the title of “World’s Largest Sportfish Superyacht.”

Designed by Dutch naval architects Vripack , and soon to start construction at the Royal Huisman yard in the Netherlands, Project 406 as it’s currently codenamed, will be a fast “battlewagon,” designed to chase marlin, swordfish and sailfish to the ends of the earth. “Project 406 is a sportfishing machine on steroids,” Vripack co-creative director Bart M. Bouwhuis told Robb Report . “It has the proportions of a typical American sportfishing yacht, with a long, flaring bow and open foredeck, and raked-back superstructure. It’s just bigger in every way.”

Like every sportfishing boat, the focus is the cockpit, with a fighting chair in the center and multiple rocket launchers. The decks above are for ringside views of the action.  Courtesy Vripack

Bouwhuis is quick to point out “this is a sportfisher first, and superyacht second. While she will have the luxury of a true superyacht, she’ll set a new benchmark in the world of big-game fishing boats.”

Renderings from Vripack show a towering, six-deck fishing machine with the sleek proportions of smaller battlewagons from American builders like Viking, Hatteras and Jarrett Bay.

To shave weight, the hull and superstructure will be made of Alustar aluminum, a super-strong, high-tensile alloy. Bouwhuis won’t reveal the yacht’s power, though the word “huge” comes out in the conversation. “You can’t fool nature if you want a 171-foot boat to go this fast,” he says. “It will have significant horsepower.”

This 171-foot yacht is the world's biggest sportfishing vessel to be built by Royal Huisman

Designer Vripack kept the proportions similar to traditional American sportfishing designs, though those smaller battlewagons don’t have six decks.  Courtesy Vripack

The yacht has been commissioned by an experienced owner who is passionate about big-game fishing. “There are yachts out there that label themselves ‘sportfishermen,’ but they tend to be big motoryachts with a small fishing cockpit on back. Project 406 stays true to the traditional proportions.”

That means an oversized stern cockpit that’s low to the water, with a classic varnished-wood fighting chair takes center stage. Each of the decks above it will face the stern to give guests a front-row view of the sportfishing action below. For thrill-seekers, the very top deck, high above the flybridge hardtop, will provide stunning 360-degree views of the water. Perfect for spotting leaping marlin.

When the fish aren’t biting, Project 406 will offer guests plenty of places to kick back and relax. On the bow is an expansive, sunken sun-lounging area with oversize pads and sofas. The yacht’s fourth-level sky lounge will serve as an extraordinary “theater” for watching big-game fish leap out of the water. At night, it will have the relaxed ambience and stunning views of a boutique hotel penthouse.

When not in sportfishing mode, the outer decks can be used for socializing, especially the open area in the bow.  Courtesy Vripack

“It has been a steep learning curve for the whole Vripack team, discovering what makes a great sportfishing boat and understanding what kind of features are needed—from the rods, to the baitwells, the icemakers and fish boxes,” says Bouwhuis. “But it has definitely been an exciting challenge.”

It’s hard to understand the unbridled passion for fishing, especially when discussing the world’s largest sportfishing boat.  But actor Lee Marvin summed up the feeling nicely: “I only make movies to finance my fishing.”

Biggest Sport-Fishing Boat in the World

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: August 20, 2021

Royal Huisman Project 406

Vripack yacht design and Royal Huisman, both in the Netherlands, have unveiled a few tantalizing details about Project 406—which is being built as the world’s largest sport-fishing yacht.

Project 406’s overall size and luxury is the reason it made it on our best sportfishing yachts list . Project 406 has a length overall of 171 feet. That means the vessel will dwarf not only the most sizable 80- to 105-footers from well-known sport-fish builders—such as Viking Yachts, Bayliss Boatworks and Jim Smith Tournament Boats—but also the behemoth one-off sport-fishers such as the 144-foot Trinity Bad Company, 130-foot McMullen & Wing Mea Culpa and 129-foot Yachting Developments Lanakai. As the team at Royal Huisman expressed this reality about Project 406, “This groundbreaking creation will be, by some distance, the largest, most luxurious and individual true sport-fish yacht in the world.”

Aqua Marine is the owner’s representative on the project, with Vripack handling exterior as well as interior design. Technical management will be the purview of Bush & Noble along with Hampshire Marine.

Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman calls Project 406 “the world’s first true sport-fish superyacht,” while Vripack co-creative director Bart M. Bouwhuis says it’s “a sport-fisher on steroids.”

Royal Huisman Project 406

“It has the true proportions and long flaring bow of a typical American sport-fish boat paired with the harmonious feel of a luxurious superyacht,” Bouwhuis says. “It’s a supersize model with super-chic curves, realized on a grand scale.”

Among the design elements Vripack is touting is a redesigned sky lounge, which will be like a theater with front-row views of the sport-fishing action in the cockpit. The superyacht is projected to come in at 499 gross tons, allowing for a top-end speed in the 30-knot range.

“Project 406 is a true sport- fisher, designed for a private owner who is serious about big-game fishing,” Bouwhuis says. Wih so many accolade

Delivery of Project 406 is scheduled for 2023. Before then, Royal Huisman is expected to launch the 192-foot motoryacht Project Phi, which has a design the yard calls “radical.”

It’s anyone’s guess what that word might come to mean in yacht construction next.

The 10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts Ever Built

Check out the largest sportfish yachts on the water..

The largest sportfish yachts are designed for luxurious multi-day outings with family or friends, as well as heading far offshore in search of the biggest fish in the deepest waters. Sportfish yachts are powerboats built to arrive at fishing grounds fast, with a hull design capable of cruising through any sea conditions. Most are equipped with tournament fishing options such as tuna towers, kill boxes, large tackling stations, ice makers, and live bait wells. Here are 10 of the biggest sportfish yachts ever built. These fishing boats are very impressive.

1. 144′ Trinity 1998 | MARLENA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

At the time of her delivery in 1998 by Trinity Yachts , MARLENA was the largest sportfish yacht in the world at 126 feet. In 2013, she was purchased by an owner who lengthened her to her current length of 144 feet. She was sold again and is undergoing a refit including a complete repower.

2. 138’ McMullen & Wing 2003 | MEA CULPA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

When Jack Sarin was tasked with designing MEA CULPA, he was given the challenge of designing a boat that could fish in the most remote corners of the world but hold her own in the stylish ports of the Caribbean and the Mediterranean . With no expense spared in terms of quality and comfort and decked out with an impressive array of fishing equipment, she manages to achieve both and has fished and cruised all over the world.

3. 128′ Heesen 1999 | RED SAPPHIRE

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

Capable of 34 knots, RED SAPPHIRE is a Heesen 3900 sportfishing yacht built to ABS class. She features a semi-displacement aluminum hull and aluminum superstructure, with teak decks. Equipped with an ultra-modern stabilization system, she’s powered by 2 MTU 16V4000 M90 3,644hp diesel engines and propelled by her twin screws propellers. Heesen also built OBSESSIONAS, a 125-foot sportfish in 1996, and KARYATIS, a 105-foot sportfish in 2005.

4. 122’ Trinity | MARY P

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

MARY P was the first hull built and launched by the Trinity Yachts’ New Orleans shipyard after its post-Katrina reopening of that shipyard on July 5, 2006. With naval architecture by Doug Sharp of Sharp Designs, many other unique details enhance her role as a sportfishing yacht, such as a fully automated anchor deployment and retrieval system, specially designed underwater lighting to enhance her performance when night fishing, and a flybridge that maintains a good line of sight for the captain.

5. 119’ Denison 1991 | PHARAOH

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

With naval architecture by Joe Langlois, PHARAOH, now SEACALL, is considered the queen of tournament sports fishing and angling. 6. 114′ Logos Marine 2008 | SEYA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

SEYA raises the question — at what point does a yacht stop being a sportfish and instead becomes a superyacht with a fishing cockpit? She was built in 2008 for a Middle Eastern client who specifically requested a cold-molded yacht due to his positive experience with this sturdy material. Logos’ 105-foot custom sportfish is also built with the same cold-molded, laminated epoxy wood with a fiberglass/epoxy skin.

7. 112’ Hakvoort 1988 | ACE OF DIAMONDS

UNVEILING THE WORLD’S LARGEST TRUE SPORTFISH YACHT

…for the first time since contracts were signed at the end of last year. At 52m / 171ft this ground-breaking creation will be, by some distance, the largest, most luxurious and individual true sportfish yacht in the world.

Vripack Yacht Design is responsible for the exterior and interior design and naval architecture of this highly prestigious project, in close collaboration with Royal Huisman – considered to be the only shipyard capable of the engineering and production of this unique superyacht. The project is managed by Aqua Marine representing the Owner’s team, working closely with Bush & Noble and Hampshire Marine as technical managers in a close collaboration to deliver an exceptional project.

The yacht’s purposeful lines sweep dramatically aft from her distinctive long and sleek bow, through six towering decks to the stylish downward arc of her stern profile. Here is a unique vessel that effortlessly blends the ultimate sports fishing experience with genuine superyacht scale, comfort and refinement. Where else in superyachting might you find a sky lounge that offers the extraordinary “theatre” of spectacular fish catches by day and the relaxed ambience and stunning outlook of a boutique hotel penthouse by night?

Designed for an experienced owner who is passionate about fishing, Project 406 will be immaculately and extensively fitted out – both for high end sportfishing and for luxurious living. Her Alustar® aluminium hull and superstructure offer strength and resilience as well as the lighter weight that facilitates smooth and efficient passages from berth to fishing grounds.

Sport fishing has attracted many new owners in recent decades, with larger boats growing to around 30m / 100ft in length and a handful exceeding 40m / 131ft. Against this backdrop, Project 406’s 52m / 171ft is a serious step up, involving significant design and engineering challenges for her designers and builders at Vripack and Royal Huisman. It is, of course, a challenge that both are keen to take on.

largest sportfishing yachts

Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman commented: “It is well known that the Royal Huisman team likes nothing better than the opportunity to solve fresh engineering challenges – especially if they come in the shape of a unique project concept. The world’s first true sportfish superyacht is a very exciting order and we are delighted to be unveiling it as we prepare to launch another highly distinctive motor yacht – the 58.5m / 192ft sub 500GT Phi. It is good to know that our reputation as the home of the world’s finest sailing yachts is now expanding to embrace the world’s most distinctive motor yachts.”

Sportfishing success requires passion, experience, and know-how as well as sophisticated onboard facilities and equipment. It is a global pursuit, focused on the larger predatory fish of the open seas, such as swordfish and marlin, that can be found in tropical waters all around the world. Project 406 will be brilliantly equipped to explore this fascinating seascape more than any sportfish yacht before her.

“This is an exceptional brief,”  notes Vripack Co-Creative Director Bart M. Bouwhuis. “And the result is an exceptional boat. Project 406 is a sportfisher on steroids. It has the true proportions and long flaring bow of a typical American sportfish boat paired with the harmonious feel of a luxurious superyacht. It’s a supersized model with super chic curves, realised on a grand scale.

No further details of this exciting project are currently available, but the joint team is looking forward to providing you with updates as the project progresses.

THE THEATRE OF THE OCEAN

Most “yachties” will be familiar with the excitement of landing a large ocean-going fish when on passage. The ‘what have we got?’ moment when the rod tip bends and line is dragged off the reel, the intake of breath as the fish breaks the surface to reveal its type and size, the tense thrill as it is carefully manoeuvred aboard (or the anti-climax as it breaks away!) and, finally, the anticipation of the wonders the chef will create tonight with the sea’s finest fresh offering. For sportfishing enthusiasts, the emotions are similar – only much, much more passionate!

Unique Motoryachts by Royal Huisman

Royal Huisman’s reputation has been largely built on a superlative portfolio of thirty-plus low-profile sailing superyachts. From classic to contemporary, from 30m to 90m+ / 100ft to 300ft+, every one is unique, tailor-made. Yet the legendary passion for perfection, expertise, quality, experience, flexibility and continuous innovation behind these projects is not limited to sailing yachts.

Just take a look at project 403, PHI, and our current motoryacht project 406, a unique 52m / 171ft sportfish yacht that will become the largest of its kind in the world (as presented in the main article). The individual aspirations and challenges of each of these projects were seen to be well outside the comfort zone by some yards. With the benefit of expert advice, each of these owners brought their highly distinctive individual projects to Royal Huisman, where fresh opportunities for creative problem-solving and innovation were enthusiastically welcomed. • The Biggest Luxury Sportfishing Yachts

Whether you are interested in big sportfishing yachts or small express boats, this article will feature some of the best sportfishing boats in the world.

The Best Sportfishing Boats in the World  will be built for rough seas well offshore (In blue water) while also being able to travel long distances in the best of today’s modern and luxurious creature comforts, but that’s not really what separates them from motor yachts.

What makes a  Sportfishing Boat  great is the ability to raise and catch some of the world’s most sought-after trophy gamefish, such as the famous  Blue Marlin .  Below are some of the best and biggest sportfishing boats you will see as of 2023!

90 Foot Jarrett Bay “Jaruco”

Jaruco engine room and tech, blackwell boatworks custom 68′, 92 foot viking sportfish, lanakai sportfish yacht- (129ft), mary p sportfishing yacht, bayliss boatworks 90ft sportfish, bad company (144ft), the 80′ bertram sportfishing yacht, red sapphire- 128ft (39m), project 406- 171ft (52 meters).

Jaruco Jarrett Bay Custom Sportfishing Boat

In December 2017,  Jarrett Bay  unveiled its finest sportfish yacht yet.   “ Jaruco”  is a magnificent vessel that spans 90 feet and can carry a whopping 4,400 gallons of fuel!

Here’s why the 90′ Jaruco is an evolutionary  sportfish yacht  that will forever change the face of sportfish tournaments. And it starts with titanium.

Jaruco’s design stands out with its use of titanium. They make its propeller shaft from an ultra-strong but lightweight titanium that has innovated modern yacht design.

These 30-foot propellor shafts save more than a thousand pounds of weight compared to the usual stainless-steel shafts. Titanium’s low density and high strength are a plus for Jaruco, but there is an extra benefit from the steel. It’s resistant to saltwater corrosion, making its lifespan longer than competitors.

Regarding tech,  Jaruco  is making sure to keep up its modern reputation. The console has five screens with every switchgear and control to monitor almost every system on the boat.

A high-tech hardtop helps the crew stay in touch with any onshore while taking on the seas. But the tech is just the start in ensuring this yacht performs at its best.

Engines: Twin 2,600 hp MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls  ensure long-range and impressive speeds making long-distance fishing trips no hassle. There are many other mechanical specs to highlight, such as:

  • A custom-built fiber torque cage that works in line with an elaborate port,
  • A mod interceptor stabilization and trim control system by Humphree.
  • And an impressive pair of Northern Lights 40 kW generators powering the luxuries of this yacht.

Jaruco Interior

Speaking of luxuries, let’s look closer at  Jaruco’s interior . To start, it has a 450 square foot covered bridge with a climate-controlled entertaining area with a 360 view to give every one of your guests an unforgettable sight.

The entire interior has a layout of high-gloss finishes that leads you to the 465-square-foot salon with a full-functioning galley and bars. Stunning woods juxtaposed the bright walls of the cabins, and the 8-drawers dressers and side tables matched the impressive beds.

There is a beautiful U-shaped dinette that faces an L-shaped settee. All in all, Jaruco is a beautiful sportfish yacht.

Blackwell Boatworks 68ft Sportfish

The “68ft  Blackwell Custom Sportfish  is one of those head turners in the world of Custom Sportfishing Boats, and that’s because you won’t find many around.  At the time of this article, I believe there are only two 68  Blackwell Boatworks  models ever made.  One being the “Wild Hooker” and the other being the “C-Ya.”  If you are aware of more, or if this is the same boat, please comment below!

As for the specs we do know about, the 68′ Blackwell, The  “Wild Hooker”  website does offer a few specs:

  • Built in 2008
  • Powered by Twin  Caterpillar C-32S ,s with 1800 horsepower each
  • Top Speed: 38 knots
  • Cruise Speed: 32 knots
  • Based off of the C-Ya we are assuming the following:
  • Fuel Capacity: Approx 2300 Gallons
  • Water: Approx 250 gallons
  • Interior: 4 staterooms, 3 heads

The next boat on our list fits well into the  Big Sportfishing Boat  category:   The 92 Foot Viking.   The 92′ is still considered the Flagship for  Viking , although production ceased due to environmental regulations (She will be replaced by the  90′ Viking ).

Despite her production years coming to an end, the 92 will continue to have an impact on the industry for years as she is a proven workhorse for the most avid and financially well-off anglers worldwide.

The average price for a 92′ Viking was Ten Million Dollars , although you could always add features and make her cost a little more (Wink, Wink).

Her standard  power package was Caterpillar C-32A boasting 1925hp each , but if that wasn’t enough fuel burn for you, you could always toss in twin 2,635-hp MTU 16V2000 M96L Diesels.

Speeds with the MTU package exceeded 40mph  while still offering a range of 507 miles, albeit while burning and an incredible 260 gallons per hour!

The 92 Viking came in the variations:

  • Convertible
  • Enclosed Bridge

Lanakai Sportfishing Yacht 12

Yachting Developments  doesn’t make many  Sportfishing Boats , but they make them big when they do!  This is the  biggest Sportfish  they have made to date: The “Lanakai” Sportfisherman Yacht.

Naval Architect  Michael Peters  didn’t hold much back on this boat, building a 129ft (39.5m) vessel that can accommodate 10 guests and 5 crew comfortably.

What really makes the “Lanakai Special is her  Carbon Fibre  hull and superstructure, which, combined with twin MTU engines, can give her a top speed of 29.5 knots and a cruising speed of 20.0 knots.

There also won’t be any desperate need to stop for fuel as the Lanakai can hold 10,566 gallons of fuel!

Performance & capabilities.

Delivered in 2008 by Trinity Yachts as the  Worlds biggest Sportfishing Boat , the 37.19 meter (122ft) sportfish “ Mary P ” is was built to impress the avid fisherman.  A couple highlight specs and features for the Mary P. Include:

  • 10 Knot backdown speed
  • Twin 2,550hp Caterpillar Diesel Engines
  • Top spd of 25 knots
  •  Aluminum hull
  • Aluminum superstructure

The Mary P was designed by Doug Sharp with Geoff Van Aller and is the only sportfish yacht to be constructed according to ABS class. Interiors are crafted by Judy Bell Davis, offering accommodations for up to eight guests and three crew; amenities include a skylounge, bar and formal dining area forward.

After more than 3 years of building, starting in 2013,  Bayliss Boatworks  finished their first 90ft Hull named “ Singularis .”  John Bayliss described the hull as very similar to his previously completed 80 and 84 models, noting that the 90 was simply cut a bit longer and wider to support the additional weight.

Despite being 180,000 pounds, the twin MTU94 Diesel engines push the Singularis at an astonishing max speed of 38 knots while her comfortable cruise sits right around 30 knots.  The backdown speed of the “Singularis”, which is important for any sportfish, is also very impressive.

Some of the basic specs include the following:

  • LOA: 90’1.5″
  • Beam: 22’11”
  • Draft: 5’10”
  • Disp.: 180,000 lb.
  • Fuel: 4,000 gal.
  • Water: 500 gal.
  • Power: Twin 2,600 hp MTU M94 Series 2000 diesels

Bad Company Large Sportfishing Yacht

She might not look like much of a sportfishing yacht from the front, but the Stern of the  144ft Trinity Yachts “Bad Company”  has been set up to be all about fishing!

Delivered in 1998, this 43.9 Meter fishing yacht was at one point the largest sportfisher in the world.   The 12 guests she can sleep can spend their days fishing in a comfortable 26ft beam and get to their fishing spots at a top speed of 26 knots.

As far as the rest of the specs,  “Bad Company”  can cruise at 23 knots and carry a whopping 9,810 gallons of fuel.  Don’t worry about running out of water either because this massive sportfisher brings along 1,674 gallons of fresh water.

  • Range:  2000 nautical miles
  • Engines:  Twin Paxman 12VP 185 3500hp (each)
  • Guest Cabins:  1 Master, 3 Double, 1 twin
  • Hull:   Aluminum
  • Superstructure:  Aluminum
  • Refitted:  2022

Project 406 171ft Sportfishing Yacht

Project 406 by Royal Huisman represents what will be the Biggest Sportfishing Boat in the World at an enormous 171ft long. Her hull and superstructure are being built using aluminum to keep the weight down without sacrificing durability and strength. The outriggers on project 406 will be the longest outriggers on earth once they hit the water and will allow the captain to stretch his lines 304 times the boat’s beam , which in the case of Project 406 is going to be quite impressive to see.

Project 406 is set to launch sometime in 2023, and to say we cannot wait to see her splash would be an UNDERSTATEMENT!

The World's Largest Sportfishing Yacht Is About to Launch in Amsterdam

Billfish, beware.

The world's largest sportfishing machine is being moved from Royal Huisman's inland facility in the Netherlands to its launch site in Amsterdam. The 171-foot-long profile of Project 406 resembles a sportfishing convertible, but its six climbing decks are definitely those of a superyacht. The Dutch yard is calling the vessel the "largest and most luxurious true sportfishing yacht in the world."

Project 406 certainly dwarves other large sportfishing yachts. The as-yet-unnamed vessel has been under construction for several years and was penned by Vripack Yacht Design, which did the exterior, interior, and naval architecture. The aft cockpit was left open, as on any sportfishing design, while a tower at the top allows captain and crew to sight billfish from a long distance. Netherlands-based Vripack also created a bespoke interior for the owner.

"Project 406 is a sportfishing machine on steroids," Vripack co-creative director Bart M. Bouwhuis told Robb Report in 2021 as the project became publicly known. "It has the proportions of a typical American sportfishing yacht, with a long, flaring bow and open foredeck, and raked-back superstructure. It's just bigger in every way. She'll set a new benchmark in the world of big-game fishing boats." The boat will include a varnished-wood fighting chair in the cockpit.

The bow will have a large sun-lounge area, while its fourth-deck sky lounge will be a "theater" for watching the sportfishing action. To keep the vessel as lightweight as possible, the hull and superstructure will be made of Alustar aluminum, a strong, high-tensile alloy. Bouwhuis would not reveal the yacht's power, though he used the word "huge" in the conversation. "You can't fool nature if you want a 171-foot boat to go this fast," he says. "It will have significant horsepower."

Bouwhuis said the project was a "steep learning curve" for Vripack, which is more accustomed to designing superyachts than gargantuan sportfishing machines. "We had to discover what makes a great sportfishing boat and understand what kind of features are needed-from the rods, to the baitwells, the icemakers and fish boxes," he said.

Royal Huisman, best known for some of the world's largest bespoke sailing superyachts , has yet to release a launch date or the eventual name for Project 406.

Biggest Sport Fishing Boats Ever

  • Updated: May 6, 2019

We all like to dream big, and that’s exactly what we were doing when we began researching some of the largest sport fishing boats in the world. We knew going into this research that naturally we’d also be looking at some of the most expensive fishing boats available, and the deeper we got the more we realized how far away our dreams were from reality. Below you’ll find some of the biggest sport fishing boats and yachts available, and what it took to build them.

‘The ACY sport-fisher C’est La Vie features a hull constructed on a permanent steel jig to ensure absolute accuracy. C’est La Vie was handcrafted from the keel up. In order to house a pair of MTU Series 4000 engines, typically found in much larger vessels, a special aluminum engine bed was fitted over the keel, stringers and chine, running the length of the engine room. The C’est La Vie power package incorporates V-drive propulsion with a reduced shaft angle, allowing the boat to push through the water more efficiently and back down quickly on fish without dropping the stern. The boat is also equipped with independent rudder control, allowing for greater maneuverability.

C’est La Vie features an expansive teak mezzanine with a drop-down TV and overhead light boxes that pull down to reveal air conditioning vents to keep guests cool on the water. The navigation and audio-video system was installed by IMS American, providing total automation of all components throughout the vessel, linked remotely by iPad control via a Savant automated control system. An integrated video system allows for around-the-clock monitoring of the engine and pump rooms. Stern-facing underwater cameras allow the bait spread to be viewed on the mezzanine TV.

The biggest challenge faced in building the 90-foot C’est La Vie was fitting high-profile engines in a low-profile sport-fisherman and devising the proper combination of horsepower, shaft angle and running gear to achieve the same speed and performance as ACY’s 65 and 70-footers. After a few adjustments during sea trials, they were able to achieve a top speed of 48 knots.

Bayliss Boatworks 90′

‘In February 2014, Bayliss Boatworks began construction on its largest project to date: the B19 90’ Singularis . The 90-footer will include a teak transom and toe rail, custom center console with wrap around seating forward on the bridge, the electronics and navigational equipment, custom cabinetry, air-actuated parts, creative storage and more. But with the boat’s grander dimensions, some new features can be implemented as well.

The Singularis five-stateroom, six-head layout will feature a full-beam master stateroom, complete with in-suite sofa, a walk-in closet, vanity cabinetry and a 42″ LED Seura mirror TV. There will be three helm chairs, and is claimed to be the first project to include a Seakeeper Gyro stabilizer and a complete Brownies Nitrox system for diving.

http://www.baylissboatworks.com/

Bertram 80′

The new Bertram 80 is the largest ever to be built in their fleet. It will be offered as an enclosed fly bridge, an open fly bridge convertible and an optional sky bridge above the enclosed bridge version to meet a variety of needs.

The exclusive Anti-Rolling Gyro (ARG) system technology comes standard on the 80-footer. It is a special feature to help make for a more comfortable experience in a rolling or trolling environment. The ARGs suppress rolling motion and reduces rolling angle by up to 50 percent. The system takes about 45 minutes to completely spool up and when in operation it significantly improves the ability to safely move about the cabin and to and from the bridge.

Two longitudinal fish boxes are located on either side of a centrally placed fighting chair on as well as a central access hatch to the lazaretto. A pressurized bait well is a central focal point on the transom that can be customized with a plexiglass window and lighting. The wide transom door, low freeboard and low draft have been tailored for offshore anglers.

Down below the 80 has four separate staterooms, each with individual full head. The master stateroom is also offered with multiple cabinetry configurations with drawers and desk or vanity to accommodate the owner’s preferences.

With a top speed of 35 knots and comfortable cruising at 30 knots, it has almost 500 miles of autonomy.

One of the biggest challenges of building this boat was that it was one of the last built in the Miami facility — the facility was designed to manufacture boats only up to 60 feet. Launching the vessel was particularly difficult because the slip wasn’t designed to handle a boat with a 22’ beam, so Bertram needed a crane to lift the boat over the marina facility and into the river.

Gamefisherman 46 Flybridge Sportfisherman

The 46 can cruise over 30 knots with its 715 hp Cummins’ twin engines. The boat is fully air-conditioned in the cabin and mezzaine. The salon boasts a teak sole, dinette table and large bunk, which seats up to six people. The cabin sleeps up to four with gear storage.

Hatteras 90′

Hatteras’ largest sport-fishing boat is the 90C. The boat was built in 1995, with the first boat delivered in 1996. This was a series of convertibles Hatteras produced at the time, the first one was in 1992, which was an 82C.

There were a total of 23 boats from the series built and sold from 1992-1998. At the time, it had largest diesel engines on a sport-fishing boat — the Deutz 16v-620 engine with 2,900 break hp.

Another unique feature of the 90C is that Hatteras built a bridge upon a bridge, meaning a flybridge on top of an enclosed bridge. There was only one like this built in its fleet.

The biggest challenge with the build process was the draft of the boat due to the large horsepower. Hatteras Engineering and Michigan Wheel designed a hybrid propeller specific for this model.

Henriques 50 Flybridge

The Henriques 50-foot sport-fisherman has been redesigned with new interior design offering a salon, three staterooms, and two heads to accommodate all your overnight guests. The hand-finished teak interior is complemented by the designer décor.

It offers two in-deck fish boxes, transom livewell, freezer, rod holders, engine room access, transom door, and room for a fighting chair to reel. The fly bridge offers a pod-style helm and room to install electronics. A mezzanine is also available as an option. Standard power will come from a pair of C-18 Caterpillars yielding a 30-knot cruise and a top end of 36 knots.

Jarrett Bay 84′

Jarrett Bay’s 84-foot Blank Check is currently under construction and scheduled to deliver mid-2016. The boat is decked out with a MTU 16V2000 Series power package, combined with a 4,000-gallon fuel capacity. The 84 has a 260 square feet in the cockpit, and nearly 22 feet of beam to spread out in its five staterooms. It has a full-beam galley, pantry, six heads and sprawling stand-up engine room.

http://www.jarrettbay.com/

Jim Smith Boats 105′

The 105-footer Marlena is the largest boat built by Jim Smith Boats. She was delivered in June 2013. She is powered by MTU 16 cal M94 at 2600 hp with top speed of 37 knots. There are five guest cabins foreword and two crews’ quarters located mid-ship. The wheel house is as large as salon on a typical 80-footer sport-fisher with sky bridge above. She is fitted with a Seakeeper M6000 gyro stabilizer.

John Vance, president of Jim Smith Boats, says, “As far as we know, this is the largest cold-molded sport-fish ever built.”

Paul Mann’s 81-footer Georgia Girl is the largest sport-fishing boat in their fleet. It was completed in May 2011.

It has a 23’ beam, five staterooms and six heads. It’s adorned with twin MTU 2400 hp 16V 2000 CR engines that makes it cruise at 30 knots and tops at 40.5 knots. The helm and fighting chair are built by Release Marine.

The most challenging part of this build was that it was the first swim platform on one of their boats.

http://www.paulmanncustomboats.com/

Maverick 46′

The 46 is an upcoming model for Maverick Yachts of Costa Rica. Maverick has been building local charter boats in the 32- to 43-foot class for ten years. The 46’ Maverick SportYacht will launch the summer of 2014 at Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica.

Maverick Yachts of Costa Rica has been retooling the SportYacht build, taking charter-boat builds to a luxury cruiser with magnificent interior. The Maverick SportYacht is a 46’ hull planked in mahogany and West System Clear Coat and will have an eggshell-colored house. It will be powered by twin Volvo IPS, SeaKeeper gyro stabilizing technology, Raymarine electronics package, Watermakers Inc. watermaker in the pump room, and feature fine veneers such as Anigre, a sunroof, and a grill in the mezzanine.

One of the biggest challenges for Maverick Yachts is adjusting to work with new lighter, stronger materials that are complementing a line of fine woods. Maverick has new technology onsite, such as a CNC machine, and vendors are coming for interaction with the team to inform them of changing build procedures, along with pages of information to study in advance of each section from the company’s naval architect, Erwin Gerards.

Merritt’s Boat & Engine Works’ 86-footer Destiny , built in 2011, is the biggest one ever built by the south Florida boatbuilder. It was also the first enclosed bridge ever built in their fleet.

The boat is an open-bridge powered by twin MTU M-94 2,600 hp diesels. It holds 3,850 gallons of fuel, 550 gallons of water, 22 gallons of reserve oil and is capable of making top speeds in excess of 38 knots.

The cockpit of the 86 has a raised mezzanine deck with bench seating and a drink box, a refrigerated drink box underdeck and two large refrigerated boxes that can double as freezers as needed underdeck. It has storage under each gunwale, a cavernous lazarette with basement-size storage, and enough room for several anglers to move around the cockpit while hooked up at the same time.

http://www.merrittboat.com/

The largest boat Ocean Yachts ever made was its 73-foot Super Sport, although the first six boats from 2000-2002 were produced as a 70-footer. Then four boats were subsequently produced as a 73 with a mezzanine from 2005-2009.

There are four staterooms and four heads. It has custom designed teak, or optional cherry, for an accented salon.

The 73 Super Sport is capable of running over 30 knots with standard diesel engines.

The enclosed flybridge, reminiscent of a pilothouse, features teak (or optional cherry) accents, climate control, a table and a four-place lounge. An entertainment center incorporates a 20″ LCD TV with remote, a DVD player and a wetbar with a refrigerator/icemaker. Captains approve of the adjustable Stidds helm chair (beside a double-wide Stidds companion seat with storage box) and the outside steering station equipped with electronic controls, located under the hardtop extension.

An optional open flybridge model is available as well, with custom hardtop and three-sided EZ2CY enclosure, has a pod-style helm with large molded-in electronics boxes, two molded-in teaser reels, and ample storage. An aft enclosure is an available option.

The cockpit has mezzanine sofa-style seating, a fiberglass pedestal table, and an underdeck freezer are standard. Stereo speakers and a step-cooler box are also standard aboard this magnificent yacht. An optional fiberglass compartment can be mounted next to the salon entryway for a wetbar and sink; or a grill-top; or a third set of electronic controls.

The aft cockpit complements Rupp outriggers, center rigger, and a fighting chair, available as options. Two cavernous fishboxes, a tackle locker, fresh and seawater washdowns, a hinged gate and transom door, as well as live baitwell/fishbox combo in the transom are standard features.

http://www.oceanyachtsinc.com/

Release Boatworks’ 46 Express is the biggest ever built in their fleet. The cockpit boasts an expansive teak deck and covering boards with a lot of room to move around. The transom comes equipped with a tuna door and a 48-gallon livewell/fish box. This boat was rigged with a livewell sump and deck fittings to fill and drain the additional on-deck livewells necessary for today’s competitive live-bait sailfish circuit. Release also installed two large in-deck fish boxes on either side of the fighting chair/rocket launcher.

Topped off with a beautiful tower, hardtop, single-bar buggy top and plenty of rod holders, this boat is set up for fishing. The tower package was designed and built by Palm Beach Towers and it suits the boat’s and owner’s needs perfectly. The hardtop is a nicely molded piece of gear that sports Miya-Epoch electric teaser reels just overhead of the helm and within easy reach.

The QSC 600 hp Cummins are under the helm deck and tucked in there tight, but you can still get to everything in the engine room, since there is room to reach over the top and access areas outboard of the engines. Water pumps, fuel filters, through-hulls and AC pumps are all within reach for service. The generator is aft of the engines on the centerline and can be accessed behind the removable engine room ladder. The entire helm deck can be lifted to do major engine work.

http://www.releaseboatworks.com/

Riviera’s largest boat comes in at 75 feet long. The Riviera 75 falls into the serious long-range category equipped with 8,000 litre/2,110 US gallon fuel tank.

It is a hand-laid structure featuring solid fibreglass below the waterline and a watertight collision bulkhead forward, and the extensive use of lightweight, cored bulkheads throughout the hull.

Engine options range from standard twin diesel Caterpillar C32 (1,156 bkw/1,572 mhp) to twin diesel MTU 12v Series 2000 M93 (1,340 bkw/1,823 mhp).

The floor is reinforced with an alloy plate for a game chair and, in addition to several storage bins, an optional live-bait tank can be fitted in the transom. Toe kicks are also molded into the bottom of the coamings.

The luxurious aft-facing lounge on the mezzanine level is an ideal position for watching the fishing action. There is also the option of a mezzanine dining deck.

The flybridge is well equipped with an icemaker, refrigerator and glass and bottle storage unit. Guests can also join you at the helm courtesy of two Pompanette Platinum companion chairs – that is in addition to the skipper’s electrically adjustable Pompanette chair. Three massive pantograph wipers and freshwater washers ensure optimum visibility through the forward window and there is the option of opening side windows.

The helm features comprehensive electronic instrumentation and vessel controls together with ample space for your factory-fitted customised equipment. Riviera offers the full range of electronics, from fishfinders and chartplotters to underwater lights and GPS systems.

Depending on your choice of cabin configuration, the 75 offers accommodation for up to 10 people in four cabins – all in exceptional comfort.

The lounge is on a mezzanine level, complemented by features such as rod storage locker, ice-box, eutectic freezer, sink, electric BBQ and storage provision.

Standard power is a pair of 1,600 hp (1,193kW) Caterpillar C32 turbo diesels that, with a fuel payload of 9,000 litres, give the Riviera 75 a huge cruising range.

Roscioli Evolution 92′

In the Roscioli sport-fishing fleet, the 92-footer is the largest. It has the highest horsepower available in the MTU 2000 series Marine Diesel’s with 2600 hp at 2450 rpm.

The 92 offers ride control systems that will consist of Seakeeper M26000 Active Gyro Stabilization and Naiad Interceptor High Speed Stabilization for a stable ride in all sea conditions. In addition, it has sound technology that is incorporated throughout the construction to assure the best possible interior environment for owner and quests.

It has a totally infused hull and superstructure, using the latest materials giving the lightest, yet strongest vessel to tackle the sea conditions.

This particular boat can be built to 105 feet.

This 86-footer is under construction, but will have many unique features in store for its future owners. A galley and day head aft in the deckhouse, which keeps the noise away from the forward cabin and minimizes the traffic through the boat during the average fishing day. There will be pump and generator room aft, under the galley, which also helps keep the forward cabin quiet and gives greater access for routine equipment service. It offers a full beam walk-in tackle locker aft, under the mezzanine deck, with electrical distribution and fuel/oil manifolds located in a separate work area in the starboard side. The 86 bares a large, refrigerated tuna box under the cockpit deck as well as a light weight carbon composite deckhouse and bridge.

The biggest challenge in building a boat of this size for Rybovich & Sons is keeping the additional interior volume from being filled with heavy things and negating its total-custom design advantage. As length and beam increase, there is an almost irresistible temptation to install more equipment and accessories. Customers begin with bigger engines, generators, running gear, and fuel/water/lube oil capacity. More air conditioning, refrigeration, higher-volume pumps and chillers, more heads and head plumbing, ground tackle, a/v equipment, with the list going on. Then they are faced with wanting to fly around over 40 knots in a shallow draft configuration and burn less fuel than the competition.

Michael Rybovich Sr. says, “It keeps us on our toes and gives the engineering side of boatbuilding a more important role than ever before.”

Spencer’s largest vessel built is an 2012 custom 87-footer, which bares the name Betsy . Paul Spencer says he particularly enjoyed building this boat because it allowed him to showcase his ability to create an luxurious yacht that performed equally to the smaller sport-fish boats in maneuverability, handling and fishability.

Betsy showcases an innovative and luxurious interior with four staterooms, four heads and a custom gym. She is well executed with some comforts such as a large full-beam master with bathrooms, a custom 50-bottle wine cellar and espresso machine. Spencer Yachts says this is first of its kind to be equipped with the new ZF pod system coupled with four CAT C18As at 1150 hp each. With the combo of these two products, she can glide through the water at 39 knots and moves incredibly well while providing super range economy and speeds. Paul Spencer and the owner of the vessel are beyond thrilled with the outcome of the project, especially with more than 500 blue marlin to her credit.

The 86-footer entitled Double Down is Tribute’s largest boat to date. Double Down launched in 2008, was designed and engineered by Applied Concepts. She was an all composite core cell, E glass and Kevlar carbon fiber boat. She was tank-tested at the University of Michigan Marine Sciences Laboratory.

Double Down has an endorsed bridge with a seven-stateroom, seven-head layout. It’s powered by three 2400 hp MTU/16 cylinder motors, 5,000 gallons of fuel and 450 gallons of water. Its speed tops out at 40 knots. Construction was all pre-pegged high-tech laminates. It was also vacuum-bagged with more than two layers of corecell.

The largest Viking to date in its 50-year history is its new 92 Convertible.

It launches late summer 2014. The first boat will be an enclosed-bridge model, and this will be followed by open-bridge versions. The project was handled by Viking from design, the building of the molds in-house with the aid of a pair of five-axis profiling milling machines and all of the construction aspects.

The 23-foot beam not only opens the salon, but transforms into a living room with built-in furniture and appointments like a 60-inch flat screen television that rises on a lift out of the teak cabinetry. An L-shape island in the galley complements the work area and all countertops feature custom-selected granite. A pair of walk-in pantries and a full day head are forward and characterize an excellent use of space. Nearby, a formal dining area accommodates eight guests.

The 92 Convertible has six staterooms, each with its own private head and shower. The full-beam master suite features a king-size walk-around bed, a walk-in closet, a dressing table, and his-and-her private facilities. Crew quarters are aft with access from the cockpit. The full-beam area includes a head with a shower, a small galley area, and upper and lower berths in a private cabin.

Propulsion choices include offerings by Caterpillar and MTU. The communication, navigation and entertainment electronics package will be designed and installed by Viking’s sister company, Atlantic Marine Electronics. The first open-bridge boat will have a tuna tower designed and fabricated by Palm Beach Towers, another Viking subsidiary.

The 65-foot Anita Jean is strikingly beautiful — a boat that would melt the heart of any Carolina custom aficionado. Its sheer is long and sensuous with nary a straight line — pure eye candy. The exaggerated crown of the bow and the radius of the transom is uber sexy, while the extra-wide teak covering boards delineate the boundaries of a cockpit designed for action, not simply for square footage.

Weaver Boatworks’ 87-footer named Mantra was completed in 2013. It is currently fishing in the Seychelles Islands. This boat might be massive in size, but ran a top speed of 47.6 knots.

The challenge for this build is that it went past their shop bay door, so in turn, Weaver Boatworks had to build an extension of the shop to accommodate the size.

Students take boat to school after bridge closes

GUNNISON, Colo. (KUSA) - The broken bridge over Blue Mesa Reservoir outside Gunnison, Colorado, has more cracks than originally thought.

The Colorado Department of Transportation’s engineers said they have no idea when it will reopen.

Right now, they cannot even get their equipment out on the bridge to complete their inspections.

In the meantime, some students are being forced to boat to school.

Hayden Fresques lives on the other side of Blue Mesa Reservoir, and now that U.S. 50 is closed for the foreseeable future, he has been getting to school on a boat with classmates who live around him.

“It was weird. I was like, ‘I’m taking a boat to school,’ and it was so early. The sun was just coming up. I was just like, ‘What’s happening?’ It was weird. Not something I’m used to,” he said.

Families have also opened up their homes in Gunnison so that kids do not have to commute across the water every day.

It is a situation no one expected, but one with which everyone wanted to help.

“So I’ve been staying with my friend’s parents and him for the last two days or two nights. They’ve been so kind to let me stay with them. I feel so appreciated and cared for,” Fresques said.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has also opened up a side road that people can take to get around the bridge.

However, the state’s transportation department said drivers need to be guided over the rough road, so it is only open every 12 hours, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Loud Luxury kick off the SFC's "The Catch" weekend

One of the many cool things about the fast growing Sport Fishing Championship (SFC) league is the way it brings big name NFL stars together with big name anglers and big name entertainers. And better still, since the SFC’s third annual The Catch Weekend that that just took place at Ft. Lauderdale’s Pier Sixty-Six Superyacht Village was broadcast on CBS Sports, more and more people are tuning in to watch the SFC’s special brand of fun and competition both on and off the water.

SFC the catch took place in the waters off Ft Lauderdale this year

French multi-platinum DJ & producer Klingande kicked the weekend off on The Catch stage with his signature house sound. Dance music duo Loud Luxury, best known for their smash hit “Body” which went multi-Platinum across nine countries with more than 1.5 billion streams was the headliner. And seven Grammy-winning, hip-hop legend Big Boi, who earned acclaim as both a soloist as well as part of legendary duo OutKast performed as well.

Rising Son's/Team Verizon won "The Catch"

And when it came time to fish, the competition between the field of seven teams matched with 14 NFL players was fierce. Team Rising Son’s/Team Verizon put the first points of the tourney on the board with a mahi-mahi caught by New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara. Miami Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert added to Rising Son’s point total as he fought to catch and release his first-ever sailfish. “Once you bring that fish in, it’s just like scoring a touchdown — that same great feeling,” said Mostert. T

Then controlled chaos hit Rising Son’s/Team Verizon’s cockpit when Kamara, Mostert and SFC Angler Toby Berthelot were tripled up on sailfish that put the Rising Son’s/Team Verizon in the lead. “Coaching Alvin (Kamara) and Raheem (Mostert) through a triple-sailfish hook-up and then landing it was amazing,” said Rising Son’s/Team Verizon’s Jaselyn Berthelot.

Rising Son's/Team Verizon scored big with a triple sailfish hook up at this year's "The Catch"

And at the end of the day, Rising Son’s/Team Verizon took home the title with a total of 500 points. The winning earnings of $100,000 were donated to the Coast Guard Foundation, courtesy of Harvey Gulf.

“It was an awesome performance by team Rising Son’s/Team Verizon, and the triple hook-up made it one of the most memorable moments in the history of The Catch,” said Mark Neifeld, SFC CEO and commissioner. “Bringing together SFC’s world-best anglers with NFL superstars once again led to one of the most spectacular offshore fishing tournaments the sport has seen.”

But “The Catch” was really only the beginning. The full 10-event SFC season continues at the Hurricane Hole Louisiana Open in Grand Isle Louisiana on May 2-4.
