The Hanse Yachts group, the second largest boat manufacturer in the world in terms of numbers of boats sold, is simply unstoppable. There are in fact numerous brands belonging to the German group that have written nautical history, both in sailing and motor-boating sectors where Fjord, just to mention one example, has created a range of luxurious, walk-around boats whose deck design has literally conquered and influenced the entire market.

This shipyard has always demonstrated a great ability to innovate, anticipating market trends. A quality which, with the launch of the RYCK Yachts brand and the presentation of the new RYCK 280 , is unequivocally reaffirmed. So you will easily understand why we could not resist jumping aboard hull no.1 to test it and study it in detail.

RYCK 280 Sea Trial

We climb on board just as the boat is being refuelled and we can’t help noticing that there is plenty of room for everyone in the cockpit, there are five of us and we can all get around perfectly without getting in each other’s way.

We leave the harbour slowly, amidst the admiring glances of the other boats, the iridescent livery and the unusual profile of the RYCK 280 certainly do not go unnoticed! The boat is powered by a Mercury Verado 300, the intermediate engine option which, as we will see in a moment, is definitely the best one.

The hull of the RYCK 280 is double-stepped and it proves to be good already running at idle; the roll is contained and the course stability is impeccable, which is an important endowment both to move well in the narrowest passages and when trolling.

Accelerating, the boat gets up on plane. The wake comes off at 12/14 knots, the boat frees itself from the grip of the water and begins to glide lightly, suspended on the air cushion created by the hull steps. We immediately feel under our feet that the hull is working well, every push on the throttles corresponds to an increase in speed, there is no resistance and the attitude of the RYCK 280 remains unchanged, always perfectly horizontal.

At 20/25 knots, we go from one wave to another without apparent effort. The scimitar-shaped bow does a good job, literally separating the waves and cutting them in two, so much so that the boat doesn’t even slow down when we meet them. I speed up again and get up to around 27/28 knots, tell the crew to hold on tight and turn hard.

I get back on a straight trajectory and, despite the sea, the wind and the astonished look of the crew, I push the throttle to the end of the stroke while trimming the outboard and, thanks to a stretch without swells, I reach the remarkable speed of 40 knots, not bad at all for this intermediate engine option.

We get back on course and the sea is rough again, but this hull, extremely at ease in these conditions, takes us to the Lerins Islands without any problems. Of course, we are cruising in difficult conditions, so there are a few jolts and splashes due to the wind, but the feeling is always one of great safety. RYCK Yachts has definitely done a great job with this project.

It’s time to take our drone and start flying to film this boat. I take off the drone with a few problems due to the wind and then I take my first look at the RYCK 280 from above and…. And although I am convinced that I have just tested an exceptional boat, I realize that its beauty will be the first reason for choosing it.

How the new RYCK 280 is made

The new RYCK 280 marks the birth of a new generation of walk-around boats which, without affecting the beauty of the sporty lines designed by Bill Dixon, conceal truly remarkable exterior and interior roominess.

But if the interior has impressed us, it’s on the outside that the RYCK 280 delivers her masterstroke. An enormous aft cockpit, all on one level, accommodates the convertible stern sofas and extends to the wheelhouse which, sheltered by an excellent and sturdy T-Top, houses two helm seats. The windscreen protects both the entrance below deck and the helm station which, more importantly, houses two 12-inch displays and all the necessary controls.

Moving to the bow, again protected by the handrails and the bulwarks, we find a central sundeck for two people which, crowned by the audio system and the cup holders, will certainly be the most popular area when at anchor. The bowplate houses the anchor in extension, which thus avoids touching the beautiful scimitar-shaped bow that characterizes this intriguing craft.

Offering unimaginable customization possibilities and a truly intriguing introductory price (around 55,000 euros, VAT and engine excluded), the RYCK 280 has the specific aim of beating her reference market. As proof of the project’s versatility, the yard offers six basic configurations: SPEED & PERFORMANCE, CRUISE & SWIM, DIVE & CLIMB, FISH & BARBECUE, TRIPS & WEEKEND and SURF & FUN . Each of these layouts can be customized to suit every owner’s tastes and needs.

Needless to say, we too couldn’t resist and had fun using the amazing configurator. We came up with two configurations, one not too rich in accessories but already complete with everything you need, at around EUR 130,000 (including VAT and a 250 hp Mercury) and one really full optional and with the most powerful engine option (Mercury Verado 350) which, including VAT, stops the price at around EUR 160,000.

These are decidedly affordable figures which, especially with the second configuration which includes any and all comforts, allow for unforgettable holidays, even long range ones, aboard this RYCK 280 which, last but not least, is also trailerable and never ceases to amaze us.

If you thought the battle for fast weekender supremacy was a shoot-out between the ultra-slick Nordic brands, you might want to take a look at a new name from the mighty German Hanse Group. Alex Smith takes a test drive of the Ryck 280...

Despite the fact that the Hanse Group’s new Ryck brand only entered the market towards the back end of 2021, there’s a powerful resonance to its debut model.

In addition to the long unbroken lines, the tapered forepeak and the wide open deck, the reverse bow and sleek, twin-stepped hull makes it feel like a formula we’ve enjoyed before.

In fact, if you think about models from the likes of XO , Axopar , Nimbus and Saxdor , the Ryck 280 is not just an incidental overlap, it is a very deliberate revoicing of a concept that the boating public has embraced with unrelenting relish ever since it first appeared on the scene back in 2014.

Ryck is named after the Ryck River in northern Germany, which connects Hanse’s HQ both to the Baltic Sea and to the wider markets of the boating world.

Not only does that help evoke the industrial excellence we so commonly associate with the ‘Built in Germany’ badge, but it also points to the ingrained boat-building heritage of the region where Ryck boats are made.

Having said all that, when you first step on board the Ryck 280, it’s not so much the quality you notice as the sheer space. Despite the model name, this is actually a 30ft boat – and while it’s not quite as beamy as the established Axopar 28 , the line it treads is a very sensible one.

With a beam of 2.81m and a weight of around two tonnes, it’s just about trailerable in the UK for those with the right tow vehicle. And the fact that it employs very narrow gunwales ensures that the vast majority of that space is available to those inside the cockpit.

March 24 Moscow concert hall attack

Here's what we know about the four suspects in the Moscow concert hall attack

Each of the four defendants charged with committing a terrorist act in the Crocus City concert hall attack was brought to court individually in Moscow on Sunday.

They are accused of committing a crime under part 3, provision “b” of article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code (terrorist act), which the Russian Criminal Code states is punishable with up to life imprisonment.

Three pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS .

Here's what we know about the accused:

• Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev: The 32-year-old was the first defendant brought to court. Mirzoyev, from Tajikistan, had a temporary registration for three months in the southern Russian city of Novosibirsk in Siberia, but it expired, according to RIA Novosti.
• Saidakrami Rachabalizoda: He appeared as the second defendant, and told the the court that he had Russian registration documents but couldn't remember where they were. He communicated through an interpreter, according to state media RIA Novosti. Rachabalizoda was reportedly born in 1994.
• Shamsidin Fariduni: He was born in 1998 in Tajikistan and is a citizen of the Central Asian country. Fariduni was officially employed at a factory in the Russian city of Podolsk and was registered in the city of Krasnogorsk, according to state media RIA Novosti.
• Muhammadsober Faizov: The fourth defendant appeared nonresponsive in a wheelchair and was accompanied by a doctor to his court appearance, as seen in Moscow City Court’s video shared on Telegram. Faizov was temporarily unemployed, before which he worked in a barber shop in Ivanovo, a city northeast of Moscow, and is registered in that city, according to state media RIA Novosti. He was reportedly born in 2004.

Moscow court orders preventive detention for all four defendants in concert hall attack case

The Basmanny District Court of Moscow on Sunday granted the investigators’ motion for detention, as the chosen preventative measure, for all four defendants in the Crocus City Hall attack case.

All four men have been remanded into pre-trial detention until May 22, stated Moscow City Court via Telegram.  

They are all charged with committing a terrorist act, according to the courts of general jurisdiction of the city of Moscow, which under the Russian Criminal Code is punishable up to life imprisonment.

Each of the four defendants was brought to court individually on Sunday.

Three pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS. 

The names of the four accused in the case are Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni and Mukhammadsobir Faizov, Moscow City Courts announced via Telegram.

All four are from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic, and have been in Russia on either temporary or expired visas.  

The court held closed hearings for each of the accused with no members of the public allowed, TASS reported, citing the court’s press service. 

2 defendants identified in Crocus City Hall attack

The first defendant in the Crocus City concert hall attack case, Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, has pleaded guilty on all counts, the press service of Moscow City Court told state media RIA Novosti.

He will be held in preventive custody at least through May 22. 

Mirzoyev is one of two defendants implicated in the attack who are facing possible life imprisonment, as reported by state media.

The suspects — Mirzoyev and Saidakrami Rachabalizoda — appeared in a Moscow court on Sunday on charges related to the attack.

Both individuals are accused of committing a terrorist act and could be sentenced to life imprisonment, according to state media outlet RIA Novosti. The prosecution has requested detention as a precautionary measure for both defendants.

Authorities have petitioned the court to conduct Mirzoyev's hearing behind closed doors to safeguard the integrity of the proceedings, state media news agency TASS reported.

The attack on Moscow's popular Crocus City Hall that left at least 133 dead has become the deadliest attack in Russia since the Beslan school siege in 2004.

Some other recent attacks include:

• September 26, 2022 : Eleven children and four adults were killed when a gunman wearing Nazi symbols opened fire at a school in the western Russian city of Izhevsk. The shooter, who was reportedly wearing a black T-shirt with Nazi insignia and a helmet, died by suicide following the attack.
• April 3, 2017 : At least 11 people were killed in a blast on the St. Petersburg metro. The explosion tore through a train as it was traveling between two stations in Russia’s second-largest city.
• October 31, 2015 : A Russian passenger jet, Metrojet Flight 9268 crashed  on October 31 after departing from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh,  killing all 224 people  on board. US intelligence analysis suggested that ISIS or its affiliates  planted a bomb on the plane .
• December 30, 2013 : A massive explosion at a train station in the Russian city of Volgograd killed at least 16 people, including one police officer, the Investigative Committee of Russia said.
• January 25, 2011 : A suicide bomber attacked Domodedovo Airport , Moscow's busiest airport, killing 35 people and wounding about 100, authorities and state television said.
• March 29, 2010 : Two explosions rocked the subway stations in central  Moscow during rush hour, killing at least 38 people and wounding more than 60 others, spawning widespread public outrage. A website associated with Chechen separatists, who have long fought for independence from Russia, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Rescuers, robotic systems and canine teams are currently on site of Crocus City concert hall

More than 300 “specialists” and 154 pieces of equipment are currently on site at the Crocus City concert hall in Krasnogorsk, Moscow region, where a deadly attack took place Friday , Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Telegram on Sunday.

The ministry said more than 400 cubic meters of structures had been dismantled by rescuers while specialized robotic systems, canine teams and psychologists from the ministry continue to work.

More than 1,600 calls have already been received on the department’s hotline, the ministry added.

The post was accompanied by a video showing dozens of emergency workers digging through the rubble of the partially burned-down concert hall.

Remember : At least 137 people died on Friday after attackers opened fire on civilians at the Crocus City concert hall, and set the building ablaze. The Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, has claimed the attack and  released graphic footage  purporting to show the incident. 

Putin lit a candle in memory of victims of the concert hall attack

Russian President Vladimir Putin lit a candle Sunday in memory of victims of the deadly attack at the Crocus City concert hall in Moscow region on Friday.

Putin also expressed deep condolences following the Moscow shooting, calling it a "barbaric terrorist act" in a video statement released Saturday.

More background: The deadly attack comes barely a week after Putin secured his fifth presidential term. The large-scale attack is damaging for a leader who portrays himself as someone able to guarantee order.

Death toll in concert hall attack rises to 137 — including 3 children, Russian Investigative Committee says

The Russian Investigative Committee has updated the death toll in the Crocus City attack to 137.

In a statement released online, the committee said "the bodies of 137 people have been found at the site of the terrorist attack, three of which are children."

The committee added that 62 bodies have been identified so far. 

"For the remaining victims, genetic examinations are being carried out to establish their identities," the statement said. "The investigation of the crime scene continues." 

Russian Embassy in US says it did not receive notification of impending terrorist attack

The Russian Embassy in Washington says it did not receive any warnings about a potential terror attack in Moscow from the US, Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov told Russian state news agency RIA Novosti on Sunday.

The US diplomatic mission had warned Americans to “avoid large gatherings” at the beginning of March due to reports “that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow.”

Earlier this week Putin had dismissed those warnings, telling the FSB that the embassy warnings were "provocative" and "outright blackmail."

“We did not receive any notifications or messages in advance,” Antonov told RIA.

“We paid attention to this, but,… I had no contacts with either the White House or the State Department on this issue,” he added.

In light of Friday’s attack at Crocus, Antonov told RIA Novosti that contacts between the US and the Russian Federation in the fight against terrorism have been “destroyed,” adding that the fault was not Moscow’s.

“I always reminded the Americans that our president was the first who, in 2001, extended his hand to the Americans and declared his readiness to provide help. And something worked, it worked... and it’s not our fault that all of this has been destroyed today,” he said.

The history of HanseYachts AG

In 1287, our home city of Greifswald joined the Hanseatic League. Our name reflects this confederation of merchant guilds and market towns, which was set up to protect trade and seafaring. Shipping and shipbuilding have played a dominant role in this region ever since. Since the founding of HanseYachts AG in 1990 and the start of production in a shipyard that was constructed in 1911, we have done our bit to keep this tradition alive. HanseYachts AG, which now encompasses six brands, has since become one of the biggest manufacturers of seagoing, series-produced sailing and motor yachts. Read on to discover more about the milestones in our company’s history:

Boat- and ship-building enjoy a long tradition in Greifswald, flourishing in medieval times during the age of the Hanseatic League. In the 1980s, the last newly built zeesenboote were launched from the Greifswald boat and repair yard, which remained in business until 1990. In 1971, the ship repair business of VEB Boots- und Reparaturwerft was merged with Volkswerft Stralsund. The Greifswald shipyard specialized in repairs, supplies and the production of consumer goods.

In 1953, the old Buchholtz’sche Werft became VEB Boots- und Reparaturwerft.

In 1911, Richard Buchholz purchased the only Greifswald shipyard to have survived the end of the era of traditional sailing boats. He spent the next 40 years expanding the business. Parts of the shipyard can still be seen at the museum harbor in Greifswald. The Hanseatic League had its heyday between the years 1310 and 1363; Greifswald, too, started to prosper. It joined the Hanseatic League in 1278 and to this day remains a Hanseatic town dedicated to shipping and shipbuilding.

In the early 13th century, salt miners from Eldena Abbey formed a settlement that would soon become the city of Greifswald. The salt pans mined by the salt workers can still be seen on the premises of the modern-day Hanse Yacht yard. Incidentally, it was from here that Caspar David Friedrich gazed upon the water that would inspire the series of pictures he painted in 1810 of ships in Greifswald harbor. To this day, his paintings remain a symbol of the importance of shipping and shipbuilding in Greifswald.
