Giovanni Castagnola | 1937 – 2017

Giovanni Castagnola, esperto Maestro d’Ascia, fonda nel 1974 le Costruzioni Navali Tigullio, laboratorio ideale per coniugare la passione per il mare e l’amore per il legno.

In meno di 50 anni le imbarcazioni Castagnola diventano simbolo di esclusività, perfezione, affidabilità, grazie alle lavorazioni attente a ogni dettaglio, al rispetto della più antica tradizione cantieristica e alla costante innovazione.  Sono molti i nomi illustri di persone che si sono affidate alle mani esperte di Giovanni Castagnola per realizzare il proprio sogno. Il merito è dell’attenzione che Giovanni ha sempre messo in tutto quello che faceva, fin da quando nel 1959 iniziò a operare nella nautica, seguendo ogni fase della realizzazione: dalla costruzione della chiglia fino al momento del varo.

Nipote e allievo del maestro d’ascia Giovanni Castagnola, Gabriele Maestri eredita dal nonno l’amore e l’entusiasmo per questo antico mestiere.

Diplomato all’Istituto Nautico San Giorgio di Camogli con una tesi sulla riqualificazione dei leudi per il trasporto e pescaturismo e Maestro d’ascia iscritto al N° 510 del compartimento marittimo di Genova, oggi è titolare del cantiere navale. Nel 2018  inventa l’Innovazione WTS, il sistema di costruzione di scafi in legno applicato da Castagnola in ogni sua creazione. Grazie al rivestimento delle strutture, garantisce all’imbarcazione una prestazione eccelsa in termini di navigazione e manutenzione, conservando le caratteristiche di sicurezza, eleganza e leggerezza tipiche del legno.

Gabriele Maestri’s new Castagnola Heritage 9.9 is an interesting combination of old school and new, a wooden 32-foot cruiser built around the latest carbon-fiber composite construction. Maestri’s concept is actually an ultramodern rendition of the wooden vessels his grandfather, Giovanni Castagnola, built after he started the  Castagnola Yacht shipyard in 1974.

Both generations of vessels share timeless, elegant looks but are separated by decades of technology. The Heritage 9.9 came from a general concept by Nauta Design, with Studio Names providing the naval architecture. This highly customizable yacht—which comes either in open or hardtop versions—uses a patented construction technique called Wood in Tech Skin (WTS) that combines solid mahogany planks encapsulated with epoxy-infused carbon fiber. The boat’s frames are made of strong, lightweight ash with an epoxy saturation. Maestri opted to keep the wood from the hull visible on the interior to celebrate its beauty.

Unlike most classic wooden designs, the Heritage 9.9 has a modern profile and vertical bow. The designers used polished teak on the gunwales, the rear platform, and mast. The deep-V hull, powered by twin 320 hp Yanmars, has a cruising speed of 34 knots, with a top end of 40 knots. At 30 knots, the boat has a range of 170 nautical miles. Owners have a choice of propulsion systems, ranging from traditional shaft drives to hydrojets.

The yacht’s hull and topsides show off the wood construction, but its carbon-fiber structure makes it fast, light and nimble. 

One of the benefits of wood is its sound-dampening qualities. The Heritage tends to be much quieter than a comparably sized fiberglass vessel, even when the boat is slapping against waves at speed. The deep-V hull was also designed to be a fast, nimble runabout, able to carve tight turns and run in big seas.

Maestri’s vision for the Heritage 9.9 was that it could do double duty—as a modern weekend cruiser and sophisticated superyacht tender. It also gives the multi-generational shipyard a blueprint for the future. Perhaps best of all, it’s a boat that Giovanni Castagnola would be very proud of.

This highly exclusive custom-built from wood and carbon-fibre boat is designed for use as a weekender or day-cruiser for short cruises or even as a large superyacht tender. It is aimed at a discerning, quality-focused client seeking a uniquely special product. The Heritage 9.9 is a planing yacht with peerless performance figures that include a 30-knot cruising speed and a 35-knot top speed.

It is clothed in classic lines with a distinctive retro charm effortlessly melded with a modern arrangement and contemporary techniques and materials. The model’s most striking quality, however, is the meticulous attention to detail that reflects the astonishing artisanship of the craftsmen involved in its construction.

Artisanship and modernity thus combine in the Heritage 9.9’s materials and construction techniques. A thin skin of vacuum-bagged epoxy resin-infused carbon-fibre coats the solid mahogany hull. The interior structures have been left bare and treated only with breathable paints. A marriage of very different materials with complimentary characteristics – wood and carbon-fibre, glass, etc. – has produced a hull with unrivalled navigational and maintenance performance that retains the quality and charm of wood-building.

ONE FORCE for sale

Designed by Construzioni Naval Tigullio in Lavagna, Italy, ONE FORCE was delivered in 2013, built using the highest quality woods. The Italian shipyard utilises a triple layer of mahogany for the hull sides and bottom, iroko wood for the keel and stem, ash to frame the deck, and finally teak for the decking itself. All interiors and exteriors have been finished with modern West System epoxy to add durability. Her interior is finished with stylish neutral furnishings resulting in a space that exudes elegance.

ONE FORCE accommodates up to ten guests in five cabins, consisting of four double cabins and one twin.

The deck spaces feature spacious sun loungers and outdoor table with seating. Plenty of portholes and windows can be found throughout to illuminate the interiors for natural light.
