A Beginner’s Guide to Chartering a Yacht

With the pandemic driving a boom in superyacht charters , more and more people are taking to the water for their first yachting experience. But while some superyachts can cost more than a million a week to charter, you don’t need to outlay seven figures for your own yachting vacation.

Wondering what else you need to know before stepping on board for the very first time? We’ve turned to experts in the yachting industry for their insider intel on how to charter a yacht like a pro—from how much it will run you, to where to go, and well beyond. Read on.

Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

It’s a charter broker’s job to match you with the right yacht and crew—and then take the lead in planning the entire experience. Professional bodies such as MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association act as a database of industry-recognized professionals. But the best source for finding a charter broker is often your own network. “Building up a relationship with a charter broker is very important,” says Jacqui Lockhart, a Monaco-based broker at Camper & Nicholsons International . “If possible, look for a recommendation from a friend.”

Once you’ve found the right broker, communication with them will be key. “Take the time to be as detailed with your preferences, such as dietary requirements, likes and dislikes, and preferred activities, as possible,” says London-based broker Charles Crane of Edmiston . “This will give us and the crew the best information to make the charter a success and tailored to perfection.”

How much should I be prepared to spend?

“The entry point is around $40,000 for a week on a yacht 82-feet upwards that can sleep six people," says Lockhart. What can take first time charterers by surprise is that this isn’t an all-inclusive figure. “The charter fee covers the hire, the crew, the insurance—everything that’s linked to the yacht,” Lockhart continues. Anything specifically for the client is extra—including food and beverages, fuel, and dockage. As a rule of thumb, budget for an extra 30 percent on top of the baseline charter figure for these extras, which goes into a fund known as the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA). At the end of the charter, it is also customary to tip the crew; between 10 and 20 percent of the charter fee is a guideline figure. There may also be Value Added Tax (VAT) to pay on the charter rate, depending on the country of embarkation.

At the smaller end of the charter fleet, more opportunity exists for single-cabin bookings rather than whole yacht charters. This year in the Caribbean , Sheila Ruffin of Soca Yacht Charters has launched a “Stranger on the Seas” package. Prices start at around $6,000 per person—all-inclusive—on catamarans between 48 and 60 feet. “This allows couples the opportunity to mix and mingle with other couples for an adventurous and social yacht charter on the Caribbean Sea,” says Ruffin.

What destinations are best suited to first-time charterers?

“For first-timers, I wouldn’t recommend a remote destination,” says Captain Kelly Gordon of Freddy , a 106-foot charter yacht based out of the Bahamas . “When it’s hard to get to, that eats up some of your valuable time and can also take some of the fun out of it.”

While yachts are heading towards unchartered waters such as Antarctica with increasing frequency, cruising grounds in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are classic destinations for a reason. “For the first-time charterer in these locations, there will be more yacht options to choose from, proven cruising grounds with known and safe anchorages, well-connected and easy access hubs to ensure smooth passage to embark and disembark the vessel as well as the ability to source most provisions that guests may want,” says Crane.

The key ingredient? The crew.

Although much of the focus is on securing the right yacht, the secret to the success of a charter is its crew. “Put simply, the crew make the difference between a good charter yacht and a bad one,” says Crane. Today’s crew are increasingly versatile. “They may also be a diving or yoga instructor, personal trainer, fisherman, or sommelier,” he continues.

The crew also knows your cruising area better than anyone else. “Be sure to pick their brain on fun things to do. They often love the opportunity to come up with fun activities and games, whether for kids or adults,” says Lotte Barker-Hahlo, a London-based charter broker at Burgess .

The level of hospitality from crew on most yachts often convert first-time charters into repeat customers. “The attention to detail from the crew is unsurpassed by any other luxury holiday,” says Barker-Hahlo. “From the unpacking of your suitcase to being offered a drink before you’ve even realized you’re thirsty, it’s 24-hour care and service.”

Gordon says that much of the feedback she receives at the end of a first-time charter is why didn’t we do this earlier? “People are always surprised at how we take the time to get to know their needs before they have even arrived. We really do study those preference sheets!”

Think carefully about who else you want on board

Another important factor to a successful yacht vacation? Your fellow travelers. This is a specific type of vacation, which should narrow your list of invitees. “Strongly consider who you vacation with when chartering a yacht,” urges Ruffin. “Unlike other vacation options, yachts are very intimate and exclusive. Choose to share your water adventure with those you like and will enjoy on the water for a week or more.” Maybe, even for veteran yachties, that's the sagest advice of all.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).

charter cost explained banner

The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

What else can you expect to pay? This overview – a part of our planning resource, the Charter Advice Guide – offers an in-depth look at charter yacht costs.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

  • All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
  • Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

Our chart below offers a quick overview of what’s included in both of these types of charters.

charter cost comparison chart

Average Yacht Charter Cost: Base Prices

What can you expect to pay for a catamaran, a sailing vessel, or motored yacht? Here’s a quick overview of the average cost to rent a yacht (not including extra expenses) for the most common types available:

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

  • The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
  • Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
  • Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

  • The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
  • BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
  • Croatia – VAT: 13%
  • Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
  • France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Greece – VAT: 12%
  • Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Montenegro – NO VAT
  • New England – NO TAX
  • Spain – VAT: 21%
  • Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

Additional Charter Cost FAQs

What are standard private charter yacht prices?

There are a number of factors that affect charter yacht pricing. However, on average, a week-long private yacht charter costs anywhere from $10,000 on luxurious sailing yachts and catamarans, and up to $150,000 for superyachts.

What affects charter yacht prices?

There are several things that influence how much your yacht charter will cost. The type of vessel, charter destination, length of trip, base cost, time of year, and local taxes all make a difference.

How much does it cost for a crewed vessel?

Charter yacht prices do increase when hiring a crew along with the boat. At Worldwide Boat, we offer two types of crewed charter experiences: all-inclusive and plus expenses. An all-inclusive charter yacht includes accommodation for all guests, food and drink, water sport activities, and fuel costs – dockage fees and taxes are charged separately. A plus expenses experience accounts for just the yacht’s base price. Things like food, drinks, fuel, dockages, taxes, and other expenses are charged separately and are usually estimated to be about 35% of the base price.

What’s included in all-inclusive boat charters?

At Worldwide Boat, your all-inclusive charter experience includes a diligent and friendly crew, water toys, food, drinks, fuel, water and electric services, and occasionally diving experiences.

What are some additional charter boat costs to consider?

After finding a base price you’re comfortable with and evaluating your package, you’ll also want to consider delivery fees, crew gratuity, insurance fees, taxes, and Advanced Provisioning Allowance rates. If you are responsible for these fees, your crew will handle the necessary transactions on your behalf.

What does it cost to rent a 100- foot yacht charter?

This depends on what type of vessel you’re looking at and how long you’ll need it for. The average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000. A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.

Does the price to rent a yacht change depending on what type of boat it is?

Yes. Worldwide Boat offers sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts. All of these vessels have different capabilities, but there are other factors that determine the price beyond what type of boat you choose. The year the boat was built, owner, availability of water toys, onboard amenities, and the ship’s reputation can all change how much the ship is priced at.

When is the high season for yacht charters?

The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.

How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?

The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.

How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?

It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

What should I consider when chartering a yacht?

You should first consider how long you want to charter a yacht for, the size, and what activities you and your group may enjoy doing. When renting a boat of this type, the size of the yacht is very important since this will determine how long the yacht charter can be. Most 25-meter (82 ft) yachts are chartered on a weekly basis. Shorter private charters are only available in last-minute bookings, or for smaller yachts that do offer daily charter rates. You can also charter yachts with a captain and crew, who take care of every detail to make your holiday an unforgettable experience. Crewed charter yachts allow you and your family or friends to fully enjoy and relax with your dream boat vacation. Check with the owner if the captain and crew are included in the yacht charter prices!

How much does a yacht rental cost?

Yacht rental prices vary depending on your luxury yacht charter choice. Features that make the price vary are the season, size of the yacht, manufacturer, and more! A yacht charter in the low season can cost anywhere from $1,500 a day and $10,000 per week. In high season yacht rental costs from $1,800 per day and $12,487 per week. The price will increase the more luxurious and extravagant you choose your yacht rental to be. For example, megayachts over 165 ft can cost $500,000 or more per week. A yacht charter cost can also have additional and inclusive rates. Depending on the owner´s boat rental offer, the skipper and crew can be included or be an additional cost. Just imagine your luxury yacht charter with delicious food and drinks for your whole family to enjoy. Each charter experience is different so speak to the owner of the boat for more information on what is included in the price and what type of yacht you are looking for.

Where to rent a yacht?

Nautal charters yachts all around the world with many options available on the Amalfi Coast, Mykonos , Costa Azul, Porto Cervo, and beautiful Ibiza . You can also charter a yacht in the Caribbean, Croatia , or Greece . You can spend your vacation on a yacht, celebrate your birthday, organize a party, and more! Check out our different yacht charter destinations!

What does a yacht charter rate include and what additional fees can I expect to pay?

For one-week megayacht charters, the price is usually given without Taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination and will vary if more than one country is visited. You will also need to pay for an estimated running of expenses paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA. Expenses include fuel (the largest cost in yacht rentals), food and beverages, port fees, etc. APA typically accounts for between 25% and 35% of the charter price, and with it, the captain will pay all holiday expenses. Whatever is not used will be returned to the customer after the charter. Finally, you will need to consider the tip for the crew, which is a percentage of the rental price, approximately 10% in Europe and 15% in the US. This is highly recommended since a professional and trained crew has a direct impact on the success of the holidays.

Do I need a license to charter a yacht?

If you want to be the one who sails the yacht, you will need the Yachtmaster Ocean license or the equivalent, depending on the country. However, if you want to sail in luxury and comfort you can charter the yacht with a captain and crew. On the Nautal platform, yachts over 50 ft are chartered with a captain, except for some yacht charters located in Croatia. This is because the yachts are very expensive and the risk of damage for the owner is very high. Also during the high season, the yacht owners often cannot get them repaired easily without an advanced booking.

Expert Advice on How to Rent a Yacht

Taking a day trip or vacation on a private luxury yacht is certainly an indulgence, but one that everyone should experience at least once in their life.

These days, renting a private yacht is not reserved just for the rich and the famous. There are many budget friendly ways to experience this luxurious getaway.

Whether you are looking into renting a yacht for a 4-hour afternoon cruise to celebrate a birthday, or you’re interested in booking a week-long excursion, this article will explain how to rent a yacht.

How to Rent a Yacht for a Day

Renting a yacht for the day is easier than ever thanks to companies that charter private yachts from your favorite destinations.

Renting a yacht for a few hours is the perfect way to experience lavish luxury for a day. CharterLux’s Miami yacht charters  offer 4-8 hour rentals. You can check more options out by visiting our day destinations page.

The first step in renting a yacht for the day is to determine how long you would like the yacht. Most charter companies will offer the option of a four or eight hour excursion.

renting a yacht tips

You can also try contacting the appropriate port authority, local yacht club or harbor master to ask for referrals and recommendations. It’s also beneficial to make a visit to your intended port of departure to check it out and look around for ads regarding local yacht rentals.

From there, securing your luxury boat is simple and easy. Most charter companies have a listing online of all their available boats. You’ll get to choose the size, accommodations and price of your rental.

First Time Renting or Looking for a Charter?

If this is your first time renting a luxury yacht, it’s a good idea to call the charter company and speak with a professional who can help guide you in the right direction

Once you’ve found a reputable company to rent from, you can start to narrow down your options. Take a look at the size, amenities and comfort aspects of the specific yachts you are considering. If the rental includes a crew, inquire as to what specific services they provide to you.

Depending on the intent of your trip, you’ll want to make sure that the yacht you rent is conducive to your needs. For example, if you are looking to bask in the sun, make sure there is a sufficient place to do so where you are safe and comfortable.

Once you’ve determined what your needs and budget are, you can start to eliminate any options that don’t fit into your criteria.

Keep in mind that in addition to the base price of the yacht rental, there are usually additional costs associated that you’ll need to budget for. These costs can include deposit, insurance, fuel, customs fees, payment for the crew and their tips, and more.

Be sure to carefully read the terms and conditions of the person or company you are renting from to make sure that you understand them and are comfortable with them.

Once you’ve found the right company or person to rent from and you’ve agreed to the terms and conditions, all that’s left to do is hop on board and enjoy your time cruising in luxury!

Weekly Yacht Rentals

Another option when it comes to renting a private yacht is to rent them for a whole week. Weekly yacht rentals are a popular choice for those looking to experience a cruise style vacation without dealing with hundreds of other vacationers.

Weekly yacht rentals work in a very similar fashion to daily rentals. Obviously, your budget will need to be higher and you’ll need to spend more time planning overnight accommodations as well as a whole week worth of food, drinks and entertainment.

These guys were amazing. I would recommend this for anyone that just wants to relax on the now to this that want to barbecue and party on the bow. The captain and first mate made our boat trip amazing.

Piotr

Lagoon 42 was very well prepared. A few minor problems on the route were solved with a great remote support of Davide - head of Grenada NSS office. Davide delivered us one of the best supports I have ever experienced - thank you!

Tan

We hired Juan's boat for my wife's 50th birthday and we had a great time on board. Juan was ready for us on arrival and guided us onboard. We set out to sea and spent four hours sailing along the coastline. We played music on his Bluetooth JBL speaker which has a crisp clear and bassy sound. It was a pleasurable time and we would book again in the future. Thanks Juan.

Mirko

This was an amazing experience - by all means! A superb catamaran, an even better crew with perfect and kind service and carfully selected spots for our day trip. The team speaks at least English, German and Spanish, knows how to treat guests with drinks, cocktails, local food and advises and adjusts the tour to wishes of the guests. They have all equipment for a relaxed snorkeling, swimming or SUPing day on board. We really enjoyed and will come back! Our group did a few of these day charters with several providers in different areas of Mallorca and other places in the world - this trip stands out from others!

Artyom

A solid boat, well maintained, with a powerful engine and enough room for 5 of us. The owners did their best with clear instructions, useful tips and convenient pickup . We will definitely rent again when in Dubai next time

Thierry

The started with an extreme warm welcome. Luis (and Franciscus) are great host. Immediately, you feel welcome and at home. Luis is listening carefully to our wishes and organize the perfect cruising. Nice sailing to nice places of the island and a lovely mooring in a baye. Time for a little swim, an aperitif with some apetizers and a Paëlla with seefood. Afterwards, we sail back with a slow speed relaxing on the back of the boat, softer sun, and even so relaxing, we catch a litlle nap. It was a dreamy and perfect rental. Thanks a lot to Luis and his team and we should be delighted being your guest on a next occasion. For sure, we will recommend your charter to our friends. Thanks a lot !!!

Jeremias

To be honest I have to give 5 stars in all categories, as Alex, my contact person from Sail Me Charter, handled everything super smooth and comforting. He was always very helpful and even organised a one day skipper training for me, which gave me and the res of the crew more confidence in sailing the big catamaran that we chartered. Looking forward to do another charter with them!

Christoph

It was a pleasure to be the host of Pierre and his family! It was an amazing time with such great guests here in the San Blas Islands. They were always super friendly, pleasant and clean. We had great contact and we look forward to having them stay with us on LibertéSailing again!

I discovered Click&Boat surfing the Internet. I am a naturally curious person, and your website caught my attention right away. I started reading about your general terms and conditions, where I quickly found a phone number. After talking to the client service, which was very pleasing, I decided to try out the platform.

At the age of 16, I was volunteering for the Red Cross of the Sea, where our goal was to assure sailing regattas. It is during that period that I learned to navigate on small boats for the first time. After 30 years, I finally got to own my first fishing boat bigger than 8 meters in length. Five years ago, a friend of mine who made his fishing boat available for charter, invited me to come aboard with him and some clients. It is then that I saw how much people appreciated the sea. So, I decided to pass my professional license to be able to take people out on the water in Mallorca.

The service that I offer is simple charters without skipper, because many people own a boat license, and our vessels are easy to handle. We are starting private excursions where we can take people on the boats to places they could not go to by themselves.

Most of the profits we make are spent on fleet upgrades. I always like to remember how thankful renters are when they are satisfied with our service.

Maribel and I would like to thank Click & Boat for their trust and service.

Regards to the entire Click & Boat team,

Rent a Yacht for a Week | Price for Paradise

Renting a yacht for a week is the ultimate way to experience a luxurious vacation....

Renting a yacht for a week is the ultimate way to experience a luxurious vacation. Many may assume this type of experience comes with a hefty price tag. While it can be a significant investment, it is also a unique vacation.

We will explain the costs of renting a yacht for a week so you can start planning your dream vacation.

Rent a yacht for a week

Rent a Yacht for a Week | Basics of Yacht Rental Pricing

To rent a yacht for a week, it’s crucial to grasp basic pricing. The total cost depends on factors like location, yacht size, and the time of year, so consider these key elements.

The size of a yacht will significantly impact the price of a week-long rental. Yachts range from compact vessels accommodating a small group to lavish superyachts that can host large parties. Naturally, larger yachts cost more to rent.

Type of Yacht

The type of yacht influences its price. For example, sailing yacht rental versus a motor yacht rental. Yachts with more luxurious amenities and advanced features generally have higher charter costs. Factors such as the yacht’s age, brand, and overall condition also play a role in determining the price. High-end, modern, and well-maintained yachts typically command a premium.

Charter Location

The location of your yacht charter is another important factor in determining the cost. Popular destinations like the Mediterranean or the Caribbean often have higher rental rates. The allure of these sought-after cruising grounds increases their charter costs.

The season is yet another element that affects pricing. The peak season, which usually falls during summer, commands higher prices. Summer’s ideal weather conditions and increased demand increase the price.

On the other hand, booking a yacht during the offseason can result in more affordable rates. You will still have an enjoyable experience.

Rent a Yacht for a Week | Additional Expenses

Lastly, consider additional expenses not included in the initial rental price. These include fuel costs, provisioning, docking fees, and crew gratuities.

Why Rent a Yacht for a Week?

Choosing a yacht rental for a week offers better value than shorter charters. Week-long charters often provide a more economical option. A full-week charter can keep costs in check while ensuring a more extensive and enjoyable experience.

When you rent a yacht for a week, you have time to enjoy the yacht’s amenities while exploring your destination.

Craving serene seclusion on a pristine island? Want to dine at Michelin-starred restaurants? Or maybe you want to indulge in adventurous activities like scuba diving. A week-long charter gives you ample time to enjoy yourself.

Unlike fixed resorts, a charter yacht adapts to your preferences. You can travel from secluded mornings to lively nightlife hot spots on the same day. Hike to a waterfall in the morning and cruise to a luxurious marina in the evening. It’s all up to you and your desires.

Wander through museums and galleries in the Mediterranean and shop at local markets and designer boutiques in the Caribbean. Moreover, it is also important to have enough time to relax . After all, your vacation is the time to spend enjoying the company of your friends and family.

Can You Rent a Yacht for Less Than a Week?

Absolutely! While a seven-night yacht charter is ideal, many luxury yachts accommodate shorter rentals. However, most have a surcharge for durations less than a week.

Some destinations, like the British Virgin Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands, may offer charters starting from a minimum of three nights. Mediterranean yacht charters typically lean towards week-long experiences.

Keep in mind that opting for shorter charters may mean prioritizing activities. You may have to compromise on certain must-do experiences. So, rent a yacht for a week for the best value and a memorable holiday.

Can Owning a Yacht to Charter (Really) Be Profitable?

can you rent a yacht

When contemplating the possibility of investing in a luxury yacht, questions often arise as to what kind of return an owner can expect on their investment beyond a fun and exciting experience out on the open water.

In this article, we’ll answer the question whether or not a regular yacht owner can rent it out and expect to make a profit out of it.

What Yacht Owners Need to Know Before Entering the Charter Business

Owning a yacht and chartering it are two completely different things. If you don’t own a yacht yet, the issue is even worse. Here are some valuable reminders.

Owning a yacht (for a charter business or not) comes with a hefty price tag.

The initial cost of purchasing a yacht is high, and it is just the beginning. One must also take into account the maintenance and operation costs that come with owning a yacht. The operation costs include the cost of fuel, mooring fees, crew salary, communication expenses, yacht insurance, and P&I. These costs alone can quickly add up and make up a significant portion of the expenses associated with owning a yacht.

On top of the operation costs, one must also consider the maintenance cost. Keeping a yacht in top shape requires a considerable investment in shipyard costs, replacing broken parts, painting, and regular cleaning. Ongoing maintenance is essential to keep the yacht seaworthy and in excellent condition.

Chartering yachts is a regular (and regulated) business

Before investing into a yacht and charter it, it is crucial to thoroughly research the regulations and requirements for operating a charter business in your specific location.

This may involve obtaining various licenses and certifications, as well as adhering to safety and liability standards. You’ll also need to carefully consider your target market, pricing strategies, and marketing efforts.

Building strong relationships with brokers and other industry professionals is also the difference between a profitable yacht charter venture and one that follows the sunk costs fallacy.

So, although entering the charter business can seem profitable and easy at first glance, it does requires careful planning and a commitment to even get started.

Yacht charters services are far from being the passive income you may have in mind

To an outsider, chartering a yacht can almost seem like a good passive income source. But it is rarely the case.

A yacht charter is a service that involves a lot of work if you intend to do it yourself: hiring a crew, doing the maintenance of your yacht, preparing food & beverage, getting moorings… the list of tasks can be very long. If you are not from the industry or if you intend to rent your yacht as a side hustle, you will quickly realize why people use the services of yacht brokers !

What makes chartering your yacht profitably challenging

While owning a yacht available for charter can be an exciting venture, there are several drawbacks to consider. These include:

The financial burden of a yacht for charter is serious

As we mentioned before, owning a yacht is a significant financial commitment. The initial purchase cost, along with ongoing expenses such as maintenance, crew salaries, insurance, and berthing fees, can be substantial.

If the yacht does not generate enough charter bookings, it may become a financial burden rather than a profitable investment.

Charter Demand and Seasonality can break your profitability

The demand for yacht charters can be seasonal and location-dependent. If your yacht is based in an area with limited charter seasons or faces high competition during peak times, it may be challenging to secure enough bookings to cover the costs.

This can result in periods of low or no income.

Wear and Tear from constant charters can ramp up maintenance costs

Chartering your yacht means it will be used by different groups of guests. This can lead to increased wear and tear on the yacht’s interior, equipment, and systems. Regular maintenance and repairs are necessary to keep the yacht in good condition, which can add to your expenses.

Using your own yacht personnally automatically decreases your income potential

When your yacht is available for charter, it may limit your personal use of the vessel. Popular charter periods may coincide with times when you would like to enjoy the yacht privately. Balancing personal use and charter bookings can be a challenge, especially if you have high expectations for personal enjoyment.

Alternatively, every time you use your yacht, it’s a yacht charter income revenue that is automatically lost.

You need guest Satisfaction to have bookings

As a yacht owner offering charters, guest satisfaction becomes crucial. Ensuring a positive charter experience requires careful management, including hiring and training competent crew, maintaining high standards of service, and addressing any guest concerns or issues promptly. Meeting guest expectations can be demanding and time-consuming.

Regulatory and Legal aspects can hinder your cashflow

Operating a yacht for charter involves complying with various regulations and legal requirements. These can include safety inspections, licensing, tax obligations, and compliance with local maritime laws. Staying updated and compliant with these regulations can be complex and may require professional assistance.

The yacht charter market is volatile

The yacht charter market can be influenced by economic fluctuations and changes in consumer preferences. Economic downturns or shifts in travel trends can impact the demand for luxury yacht charters. It is essential to monitor market conditions and adapt your charter business accordingly.

It is crucial to carefully evaluate these drawbacks against your personal goals and financial capabilities before deciding to own a yacht available for charter. Conducting thorough market research, seeking professional advice, and creating a comprehensive business plan can help miti

Who can reasonably expect to make money by chartering their yacht?

Not everybody can be profitable chartering their own yacht, or having a fleet of yachts for rent.

Most people that rent their own yacht without a professional broker by their side aren’t actually making money, even though their little side hustle can help them finance their hobby.

Being constantly profitable chartering your yacht involves a lot of work combined with the appropriate vessel in the right location, and some experts to market it and manage it. Only then one can reasonably expect to see extra cashflow.

How you can optimise the Return on Investment (ROI) of a Yacht for Charter

can you rent a yacht

Considering numerous factors, the return on investment (ROI) of a yacht for charter can significantly vary. Just keep in mind that while some yacht owners can generate profitable returns, the vast majority of yachts may experience lower or even negative ROI.

If you don’t have a yacht yet, conduct a serious market research

In most business, market research is one of the key to success. Yacht charter is not an exception. If you already have your own yacht, your options are naturally limited. However, if you are new to yachting and are simply contemplating the idea of buying a yacht with the plan to rent it out to break even or be profitable, then seriously study your market.

Better yet, get the help of a professionnal broker that might have all the insiders tips you need before making a big mistake and kill your potential ROI forever.

Have your yacht for charter in popular areas where there is demand

The ROI largely depends upon the level of demand and popularity of yacht charters in specific locations. Popular destinations with high demand, such as Mediterranean or the Caribbean can provide better opportunities for a higher ROI. But, due to the competition among yacht owners, the pricing and occupancy rates might be impacted.

Have appropriate charter prices to ensure a good occupancy rate

Rental rates significantly contribute to deciding the ROI of a yacht. Higher rates may result in a favorable ROI only if the yacht is consistent in securing more bookings throughout the charter season. The ability to attract clients is important to maximize returns: an empty boat costs money and doesn’t generate income.

Operating Costs and Expenses must be effective

The costs of fleet management including crew salaries, maintenance and repair, insurance, fuel, provisioning, marketing, and administrative expenses have a direct impact on the ROI. Effective management of these costs can non only help you to break-even, but also hopefully to generate real profits.

Carefully choose your type of yacht (and size) to ensure profitability

The size and type of yacht directly influence its charter appeal and ROI. Larger, more luxurious yachts typically command higher charter rates, attracting high-end clientele and potentially generating better ROI. However, larger yachts may also have higher operating and maintenance costs, and they can be harder to fill.

Your yachts always need to be kept in good condition

Nobody want to charter a yacht that looks beaten up and dangerous.

The condition and age of the yacht are the key factors that affect its charter appeal and subsequent rental rates. Well-maintained yachts in excellent condition are highly likely to receive more bookings and generate higher rental rates, thereby maximizing the ROI.

Older yachts may require frequent repairs and renovations, which can influence profitability.

Management and Marketing are key to rent our your yacht, just like any other business

Implementing effective management and marketing strategies to increase client bookings, occupancy rates, and optimizing charter pricing can significantly influence the ROI.

Working with a professional yacht management company or charter broker can help attract clients and maximize the ROI.

What are the costs involved in offering a yacht for charter ?

When offering a yacht for charter, there are several costs involved that will naturally have to be lower than your total charter income in order to make sure your venture remains profitable .

These costs can vary depending on various factors such as the size and type of the yacht, the charter location, the duration of the charter, and the services provided. Here are some common costs to consider:

  • Yacht Acquisition or Ownership Costs: Flag registration. As some yacht flag can be more advantageous than others for tax purposes, but also for the diploma your crew will require to navigate the yacht.
  • Crew Costs : The crew is essential for operating the yacht and providing a high-quality charter experience. Crew costs typically include salaries, training, uniforms. The crew size will depend on the size and type of the yacht.
  • Fuel and Dockage: Fuel costs can be significant, especially for larger yachts. Dockage fees also need to be considered, as yachts often require berthing in marinas or ports in between charters and winterizing.
  • Maintenance and Repairs: Yachts require regular maintenance and occasional repairs to ensure they are in optimal condition for charters. These costs can include engine maintenance, hull cleaning, system servicing, and cosmetic repairs.
  • Insurance: Yachts need comprehensive insurance coverage for protection against potential risks such as accidents, damage, theft, and liability. The cost of insurance can vary depending on the yacht’s value, size, and cruising area.
  • Marketing and Brokerage Fees: To attract charter clients, marketing efforts are necessary. This may involve creating a website, advertising, attending boat shows, and working with charter brokers. Brokerage fees are also applicable if you choose to work with charter brokers to promote and book charters on your behalf.
  • Ancillary Services: Additional services such as water toys, scuba diving equipment, entertainment systems, internet connectivity, and crew uniforms may incur additional costs. These extras can enhance the charter experience and attract more clients.

It’s important to note that the actual costs can vary significantly depending on the specifics of your yacht and the charter operation. Working with a professional yacht management company or charter broker can provide valuable insights and help you estimate these costs more accurately. Contact our team to get more details.

The Best Alternative to Reduce the Cost of Yacht Ownership: Fractional Ownership

can you rent a yacht

Fractional ownership of a yacht is when an individual invests in only part of the yacht. This means there are comparatively more funds to spare for just a part of the yacht. So, the cost of owning and keeping a yacht in great condition is considerably reduced.

There are yacht chartering companies like the WI Yacht that allow individuals to own part of a yacht for some time during the year. This way, the cost of ownership is significantly less, but you do get the privilege of being a yacht owner.

Key Takeaways on Owning a Yacht to Charter

Renting out profitably a yacht that you own is largely dependent upon having the right boat in the right location, the right plan, and in most cases the right broker by your side.

Knowing exactly what to expect before taking on this type of venture is essential as there is a certain level of risk involved when entering the yacht charter market, especially considering the costs involved in simply maintaining a yacht afloat.

Can every yacht owner be profitable by chartering their own yacht? No, but it can certainly decrease the overall cost of ownership.

And with the right set of conditions and a professional broker, some owners might even make a successful business out of it almost passively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yachts from know shipyard are usually the most profitable for chartering. The key is a professional crew and a good central agent for your marketing.

Chartering a superyacht just offsets the costs. Majority of superyachts offered for charter earn money to offset expenses, they do not earn a profit.

If done in strategic areas and times of the year, chartering your own yacht can be extremely lucrative. An individual can make up to one hundred thousand or more in a single month. The key is to buy cheap, second-hand even, and then refurbish your boat.

Usually, banks offer loans for buying a yacht if you have a strong initial payment. There are personal loans available that people can use for such investments, but they come with higher rates of interest.

The standard rate of commission to the yacht charter company per yacht is 15%. This amount can increase or decrease, but just a little.

The income obtained from renting (or chartering) a yacht can sometimes cover all expenses incurred, but not always. So, owning a yacht for free by renting it out is possible, but not guaranteed.

The most popular yacht charter destinations are the United States of America, British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, French Riviera & Monaco, Amalfi Coast, Croatia, and Greece.

Renting Out Your Boat in 9 Simple Steps & Is It Worth It

Christopher Murray

Do you own a boat that sits in a marina two or three seasons of the year? You could be missing out on some serious cash by letting this happen. Instead, consider renting out your boats to vacationers and travelers. It’s a decent side income that’s relatively easy to manage thanks to many peer-to-peer boat rental apps.

But how do you go about renting out your boat? Let’s dive in and you’ll get your answer!

How To Rent Out Your Boat? Compare prices of other boat rentals in your area to get a sense of what you could charge.  Post on boat renting sites like Boatsetter or GetMyBoat to get the word out there about your rental. Make sure you have all safety equipment and liability insurance in place before you start renting out.

Renting Out Your Boat in a Few Simple Steps

Renting out your boat can be a great way to earn extra income and pay off your substantial  boat loans , all the while allowing others to enjoy the water. Here are a few simple steps to help you get started:

  • Check local regulations : Before you begin renting out your boat, make sure to research and understand the local regulations and requirements for boat rentals in your area. This may include obtaining any necessary licenses or permits.
  • Get insurance : It's essential to have the right insurance coverage when renting out your boat. Standard boat insurance may not be sufficient for rental purposes, so you should explore specialized boat rental insurance policies that can protect you in case of any accidents or potential damage.
  • Set a rental price : Determine a fair and competitive rental price for your boat. Consider factors such as the boat's size, age, features, and the demand for similar boats in your area.
  • Create a rental agreement : Develop a comprehensive rental agreement that outlines all the terms and conditions of the boat rental. Include details about the rental period, the responsibilities of the renter, any restrictions on use, and liability disclaimers. It's important to have this agreement in writing and have renters sign it before they use the boat.
  • Market your boat rental : Advertise your boat rental to attract potential renters. You can use online platforms, social media, local boating communities, and rental listing websites.
  • Screen potential renters : Before finalizing any bookings, ask potential renters about their boating experience and if they have any necessary licenses or certifications . You want to ensure that they are capable of handling your boat safely.
  • Conduct a safety briefing : When the renter arrives to pick up the rental boat, provide them with a thorough safety briefing. Show them how to operate the boat, explain safety procedures, and make them aware of any specific rules or local navigational restrictions.
  • Maintain your boat : Regularly inspect and maintain your boat to ensure it is in good working condition. This will help prevent any issues during rentals and ensure the safety of your renters.
  • Consider hiring a boat captain (optional) : If you have a larger boat or are concerned about renters' abilities, you may offer the option to hire a boat captain for an additional fee. This can give renters peace of mind and help prevent accidents.

How Much Can You Earn by Renting Out Your Boat?

Renting out your boat can be a lucrative venture, but how much money you make largely depends on your location. Those in popular tourist states like Florida can earn  $20,000 per year, on average . But colder climates have shortened rental seasons so they should expect to earn less.

With proper marketing, excellent boat maintenance , and positive reviews from customers, a boat owner can achieve higher rental rates and maximize their earnings over time.

It's essential to consider the things that eat into your profit. Things like operational costs, insurance, and potential wear and tear on the boat. Despite this, boat rentals present a promising opportunity for generating sizeable money addition.

What’s the Market for Boat Rentals Like?

The  boat rental market is thriving , driven by increasing interest in recreational boating and water-based experiences. Digital platforms have streamlined rentals and diverse offerings cater to various preferences. However, competition among many boat owners and seasonal fluctuations are factors to consider. With proper management and compliance, a boat owner can tap into the market's potential for lucrative earnings.

How to Price Your Boat Rental

When you decide to rent out your boat, it's just the beginning. More importantly, you need to figure out how much you’ll list your boat for. To do so:

  • Conduct thorough research on similar boats in your area to understand the current rental rates. Consider factors like boat type , size, amenities, and location to gauge your boat's competitive positioning.
  • Determine all associated costs , including maintenance, insurance, mooring fees, and cleaning expenses. Factor in these costs to ensure you set a profitable rental rate.
  • Adjust your rental rates based on seasonal demand . Peak seasons with higher demand may warrant higher prices, while off-peak periods could benefit from more competitive rates to attract renters.
  • Offer flexible rental packages , such as hourly, daily, or weekly rates, to cater to diverse customer preferences. Special deals for repeat customers or extended rentals can also encourage loyalty.
  • Factor in any additional services or amenities you provide, such as water sports equipment or a captain, and include these in your pricing strategy.
  • Price your boat competitively , but ensure your boat's value and quality stand out to attract more renters and justify premium rates.
  • Monitor rental demand and adjust rates accordingly. Dynamic pricing can help maximize earnings during peak times and maintain competitiveness during slower periods.
  • Use promotional campaigns , discounts, and strategic marketing to attract renters and stand out from competitors.

Factors Affecting Rental Price

The rental price of your boat is influenced by various factors. Consider the following when determining the optimal rate:

  • Type and size of boat:  Larger or more luxurious boats generally command higher rental prices due to increased capacity and amenities.
  • Location:  Boats located in popular tourist destinations or areas with high demand for water activities may justify higher rental rates.
  • Seasonality:  Peak seasons, when demand for boating is high, may warrant higher prices, while off-peak periods could benefit from more competitive rates.
  • Amenities and extras:  Additional features like water sports equipment, entertainment systems, or a captain's service can add value to your boat and impact the rental price.
  • Condition and age:  A well-maintained, newer boat might justify a higher rate compared to an older vessel in less optimal condition.
  • Market trends:  Stay informed about the current rental market to adjust your pricing strategy based on the latest demand and competition.

Example Rate for Renting Out Your Boat

Let's consider an example of a 25-foot speed boat available for rental in a popular coastal vacation destination. The boat is well-maintained, equipped with safety gear, and can accommodate up to six passengers. Assuming a rental fee of $350 a day, here’s how the rate was calculated:

  • Base rate:  The starting point for the rental price is determined based on factors like boat size, type, and demand in the area. In this case, the base rate is set at $250 per day.
  • Additional amenities:  The inclusion of water sports equipment adds value and enhances the rental experience, warranting an additional $30 to the base rate.
  • Fuel cost:  Considering the fuel consumed during an average day of boating, an additional $20 is factored into the rate.
  • Cleaning and maintenance:  To cover cleaning and routine maintenance expenses, an extra $50 is added to the total rate.

Hence, the final rental rate is calculated as follows:

$250 (Base Rate) + $30 (Additional Amenities) + $20 (Fuel Cost) + $50 (Cleaning and Maintenance) = $350

Is Renting Out Your Boat Legal?

Renting out your boat is generally legal in many places, but it’s essential to be aware of the specific regulations and requirements that may apply to boat rentals in your area. While laws and regulations regarding boat rentals can vary significantly depending on the country, state, or even local jurisdiction, there are some general guidelines and common regulations that may apply:

  • Licensing and permits:  Some areas may require boat owners to obtain specific licenses or permits to legally rent out their boats. These permits might involve safety inspections, insurance requirements, or proof of competency in operating a boat.
  • Insurance requirements:  Boat owners may need to obtain specialized insurance coverage that includes commercial liability coverage. Standard boat insurance may not cover commercial use, so it's crucial to explore options for peer-to-peer boat rental coverage.
  • Safety regulations:  There are usually safety regulations that must be followed, such as providing appropriate safety equipment like life jackets, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits. Boat owners might need to ensure that their boats meet certain safety standards and regularly undergo inspections.
  • Environmental compliance: Some locations have environmental regulations to protect waterways and marine life. Boat owners might be required to adhere to specific guidelines to prevent pollution and protect the environment.
  • Taxation and reporting: Renting out a boat might have tax implications , and boat owners may need to report their rental income to the relevant tax authorities.

What Insurance Do You Need to Rent Out Your Boat?

Insurance plays a crucial role for boat owners engaging in rentals. Standard boat insurance you get for your personal boat may not cover commercial use, so exploring  specialized insurance options like  peer-to-peer boat rental coverage is vital.

Assess your boat's value, risks, and rental frequency to determine the appropriate coverage level. Prioritizing legal compliance and adequate insurance safeguards both boat owners and renters during the rental period. Consult with insurance providers to tailor coverage to your specific rental needs.

How to Maximize Your Boat Rental Income?

  • Offering additional services:  Enhance the rental experience by providing additional services, such as offering a knowledgeable captain or a guided tour, which can attract more renters willing to pay for added convenience and expertise.
  • Enhancements and add-ons:  Consider outfitting your boat with desirable enhancements, like water sports equipment or onboard entertainment systems, to increase the perceived value and appeal of your rental.
  • Promoting Your boat rental:  Utilize various marketing channels, including social media, online forums, and boating communities, to promote your boat rental and reach a wider audience of potential renters. Collaborate with local businesses, such as hotels or travel agencies, to expand your reach.

How to Manage Bookings and Payments for Your Boat Rental?

Managing bookings and payments for your boat rental efficiently is crucial to ensure a smooth and hassle-free rental process. Here are some steps to help you manage bookings and payments effectively:

  • Online booking systems : Consider using an online booking system specifically designed for boat rentals. This can streamline the process, make it easy for renters to book your boat, and reduce the chances of double bookings.
  • Booking calendars : Maintain a centralized booking calendar that shows the availability of your boat. Update it regularly to reflect confirmed bookings and avoid any conflicts.
  • Reservation deposits : To secure bookings, require renters to pay a reservation deposit. This amount can be a percentage of the total rental cost and is non-refundable if the renter cancels without sufficient notice. By taking a deposit, you ensure that the renter is committed to the booking.
  • Clear cancellation policy : Have a well-defined cancellation policy in your rental agreement. Specify the timeframes for cancellations and whether renters are eligible for a refund based on the notice given.
  • Accepting payments : Provide multiple payment options to renters to make it convenient for them. Accept credit/debit cards, PayPal, or other popular online payment methods.
  • Automated reminders : Send automated reminders to renters before their scheduled rental date. Remind them of the booking details, safety briefing, and any outstanding payments.
  • Post-rental inspection : After the rental period, inspect the boat for any damages or excessive wear and tear. If you find any issues, communicate with the renter about potential deductions from their security deposit.
  • Keep records : Maintain detailed records of all bookings, payments, and communication with renters. This documentation can be valuable for accounting purposes and dispute resolution if necessary.

What Challenges You Might Face While Renting Out Your Boat?

Being proactive in addressing challenges will help you maintain a reliable and successful boat rental business while providing renters with a memorable and enjoyable boating experience. Here are some of the challenges you should be prepared for:

  • Handling equipment failures and breakdowns:  Be prepared to address unexpected equipment failures during rentals to minimize disruptions and provide prompt solutions.
  • Regular maintenance:  Establish and adhere to a regular maintenance schedule to keep your boat in optimal condition for rentals and prevent potential issues.
  • Emergency repair solutions:  Have a contingency plan in place for emergency repairs, ensuring quick and effective resolutions in case of critical breakdowns.
  • Renter negligence:  Prepare for instances of renter negligence that may result in minor damage or accidents, and have clear policies for addressing such situations.
  • Weather conditions:  Account for adverse weather conditions that may affect rental schedules and have policies in place for rescheduling or cancellations.
  • Liability and insurance concerns:  Address liability issues and ensure appropriate insurance coverage to protect your boat and business from potential liabilities.
  • Rental agreement disputes:  Be ready to handle disagreements or disputes related to the rental agreement, and have clear terms and conditions in place to address such scenarios.
  • Seasonal fluctuations:  Prepare for seasonal fluctuations in demand and adjust your rental rates and marketing strategies accordingly.
  • Boat availability:  Manage rental calendars efficiently to prevent double bookings and ensure accurate availability information for potential renters.
  • Renter communication:  Effectively communicate with renters to provide necessary instructions, and safety guidelines, and ensure a positive rental experience.

How to Manage Conflicts and Disputes with Renters?

As a boat rental business owner, it's essential to be prepared for potential conflicts or disputes that may arise with renters. By proactively establishing clear guidelines and handling disagreements professionally, you can navigate such situations effectively. Here are some tips to manage conflicts and disputes with renters:

  • Create a comprehensive rental agreement that outlines rules, safety guidelines, and responsibilities for both parties. Communicate these terms to renters to set expectations from the beginning.
  • If conflicts arise, maintain open and respectful communication with renters. Listen to their concerns and try to find mutually agreeable solutions.
  • Ensure that every rental is backed by a signed contract that includes all agreed-upon terms and conditions. This document serves as a reference in case of disputes and provides legal protection for both parties.
  • Provide excellent customer service throughout the rental process. Be responsive to inquiries and address renter needs promptly, creating a positive experience that reduces the likelihood of disputes.
  • Conduct a thorough inspection of the boat with renters before and after each rental. Take photos or videos to document the boat's condition, which can be useful in case of disputes over damages.
  • Familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations related to boat rentals. Understanding your legal rights and responsibilities can prevent potential conflicts.
  • If conflicts escalate, consider professional mediation as a neutral way to resolve disputes between you and the renters.

Thinking Of Renting Out Your Boat?

The happiest days in the life of a boat owner might be the day you buy it and ... the day you rent it out? See if Peer-To-Peer Boating Is For You.

Smiling boaters

If you want the joy of boating without owning one, peer-to-peer rental may be for you. (Photo: Chris-Craft)

As boat owners, we all know that even when we're not using our boats, they still cost us money. Slip fees, insurance, and maintenance don't stop just because our boats are sitting at the dock. At the same time, there are lots of people who aren't ready to invest in a boat, but who still want to get out on the water. To bridge these two boating groups, a new concept called peer-to-peer (P2P) boat rental has emerged. Let's take a look at how it works, and what to consider before you jump in.

For a few years now, people with underused assets, such as cars, bicycles, rooms, and even entire houses, have been connecting via P2P websites to others who want to rent them for a few hours, a day, or a week. Companies such as Airbnb, which allow people to rent out unused rooms on a daily basis, have been around for a few years, and the concept has now migrated to boats. With P2P rental, boat owners can collect some money on days their boats would otherwise sit at the dock or on the trailer. Non-boat owners can get on the water when they want, and let someone else handle the costs of ownership. Vacationers can rent boats far from their normal cruising area, opening up new waters to explore.

One advantage for those looking to buy a boat is that it's possible to rent a model you're considering buying so that you can get a whole day's use to evaluate it. Often P2P boats are fully loaded, unlike many traditional rentals, which normally are pretty basic in order to sustain daily use. If you're interested in fishing, for example, P2P owners will often rent their boats fully rigged.

Is it possible to make money renting out your boat this way? Maybe. According to Aaron Hall, founder of the P2P website Boatbound, you can often pay for your expenses by renting your boat once or twice a month, and some boat owners in hot markets can make money on top of that. Like any renting situation, P2P rentals aren't without risks and rewards. Here's what you need to know before you dive in as an owner or renter.

How It Works

Boat owners list their boats on a P2P website, such as Boatbound.com , Boatsetter.com , or Cruzin.com . Potential renters browse boats of all types and sizes, and once they find something they want to rent, the website handles the transaction from start to finish. Owners set their own price based on the market, as well as required deposits. Insurance should be included in the price with a deductible, which is often $500, or 2 percent of the boat's value, whichever is greater. Many boat owners set the deposit so it will cover the deductible. Some P2P companies also contract with BoatUS for on-the-water towing.

Peer-to-peer rental websites make listing or finding a boat easy.

Boat owners often find it hard to imagine renting their boat to a perfect stranger. Their biggest concern? How do I know a renter will take care of my stuff? The flip side to this is that a renter doesn't want a boat that's not safe, or that can barely make it out of the marina. While there is a certain element of trust, the answer combines something eBay has been doing for years — buyer and seller reviews — with vetting for both renter and boat. If your product is good, you get a good review; if your buyer is good, he/she gets a good review. If either gets poor reviews, it's not likely they'll be able to continue to participate. The same concept is used for P2P boat rentals, with the addition that a renter is further vetted and the boat has to meet certain qualifications.

You wouldn't rent your pride and joy to someone you know nothing about, so P2P companies typically require renters to complete a questionnaire and affidavit, meet age requirements, have a valid driver's license, and possess a minimum of two years of boating experience. P2P companies also require that the owners receive a deposit from renters to cover contingencies like minor damage, missing life jackets, or failure to refuel the boat. In the end, though, it's the owner who has to feel comfortable renting to an individual, and there's really no standard format. Hall says owners can talk to potential renters on the phone, meet them in person, or even take them out on a cruise around the marina until they're comfortable.

Dashboard My Boats screenshot

Renters can browse the P2P websites, which show pictures and descriptions of boats, along with reviews from previous renters, so they can be sure they're getting the right boat. Note that larger or faster boats, and those over 10 years old, may have additional requirements before being accepted for listing, such as an inspection or survey from a qualified marine surveyor, which should help ensure a good experience. Still not sure you'd rent out your boat? Boatsetter has taken a slightly different approach to address the high-end luxury-boat market, setting up their website to offer the option of having a licensed captain aboard for the rental.

And If You're The Renter?

The last thing you want is an unreliable boat. For boats with current reviews, you'll have to rely on previous renters' experiences. People who've had problems with a boat are not usually shy about saying so. If there are no reviews, and you're not comfortable with the pictures and description, ask to see the boat before you make a deal.

Ask what the policy is if the boat breaks down and you can't use it. In most cases, P2P companies will work with the owner and renter for a full or partial refund, or find another boat to rent. Boatbound, Boatsetter, and other P2P companies have agreements with BoatUS to provide towing resulting from on-the-water breakdowns at no charge to the renter.

Look for a boat you're comfortable with and that fits your needs, and be aware that you'll be paying fuel costs as well as the rental fee. Ask about any other fees or charges before you climb aboard.

Make sure you get a pre-rental checklist so you can note any prior damage. Walk through the boat, inside and out, looking for preexisting damage. It's a good idea to take your own date- and time-stamped photos of the boat, inside and out. Look at the P2P's liability coverage in the event you injure someone in an accident. Make sure it's at least as high as what you have through your own boat or auto policies.

If the engine quits, or there's an equipment breakdown, how will the boat get back to the dock? Ask the P2P company how they handle breakdowns. Some contract with BoatUS for on-the-water towing service, so there's no money out of your pocket. (If you are renting a boat and have your own BoatUS membership with Towing Service, it will provide for a tow up to your selected per-incident service level, even if the P2P company doesn't provide it.)

You'll need a credit card for the daily fee as well as an advance deposit. Most P2P companies return your deposit automatically after the boat owner inspects the boat and gives the OK.

Before Renting Out Your Boat

The first thing boat owners need to know is what happens if your boat gets damaged or someone gets hurt. Most recreational marine-insurance policies will not provide coverage during any rental period — no matter whether you're renting someone else's boat, or renting your boat to someone else. Some companies may not cover your boat at all if the boat is even offered in a P2P program. While BoatUS Marine Insurance may provide a policy to boats used for P2P rentals, there's no coverage of any type during the rental period. If you would like to rent someone else's boat, and you have a BoatUS policy, you can obtain an endorsement that will extend the liability coverage of your boat policy to you while renting another boat. But bear in mind that this supplemental coverage does not provide for any damages that you may cause to the rental boat itself.

To deal with this issue, the P2P businesses that BoatUS Consumer Protection is aware of, provide their own insurance policies, covering damages that may occur while the boat is engaged in a rental arrangement. But before you enter into any agreement, check with the P2P business about their coverage to make sure you're adequately protected no matter which side of the transaction you're on.

Search BoatBound screenshot

Boat owners should look at how much the policy will actually pay if the boat is lost completely, how much the payment will be reduced by depreciation if the boat is damaged, and whether salvage charges will be deducted from the payment for damages to the boat. Hopefully any deposit collected will cover the deductible if the boat is damaged, but again, be aware that there may be depreciation to repair things like engines or sails on older boats, and the deposit may not be enough. Most P2P companies give you a couple of days to inspect your boat before allowing the deposit to be returned. The good news is that typically less than one percent of P2P rentals have problems with damage, and they're usually cleared up fairly easily. Remember, if a renter wants to continue renting, he's got to have a positive review. (To read about one BoatUS member's P2P experience, see below.) Keep in mind that as a boat owner, you're responsible to make sure that your boat meets all relevant USCG requirements.

What's It Like To Rent Your Pride & Joy?

Bob Kellett, a BoatUS member from Seattle, Washington, has rented his 30-foot Nonsuch, Bobcat , several times and says that so far he's been impressed. "You're in control of the entire process," he says, "from setting your price to checking out potential renters." Kellett talks to potential renters on the phone and if he's comfortable with their experience, he'll meet them at the boat for a thorough run-through. He gives his renters a detailed instruction form about the boat's equipment, and a step-by-step guide for things like starting the engine, raising the boat's big main, and how to use the head. He'll even take them out on the boat for a few minutes if they want.

The first time he rented his boat he was apprehensive. "I felt like a nervous father whose daughter was going to the prom," he jokes. But after a couple of rentals, he realized that the renters cared about his boat, too, and were there for the same reason he was — a love of the water and boating. He also tells his renters that he's only a phone call away, should they have questions. So far, the only downside is an occasional scheduling conflict when he'd like to use the boat himself, so he tries to find renters who can give him a few weeks' notice. On the upside, he says it's a good excuse to keep his boat looking good. And the extra money in his pocket from a couple of rentals a month easily pays his moorage. "I hope to do more of this next year," he says. "I'm sold on the concept."

How Is The Renter Vetted?

Most companies require renters fill out a detailed questionnaire that asks about criminal and driving convictions, as well as boating experience. But it's your boat, after all, so you can decide what else you want to ask, and decide to whom you're willing to rent. Most P2P companies provide a pre- and post-rental checklist for inventory and damage, and you may want your own checklist for extra equipment. A photo or video documentation of the boat's condition inside and out, before each rental, can help resolve disputes later on.

Costs & Profits

What does it cost to rent a boat? The rental price you can get for your boat varies based on the size and equipment level of the boat as well as the market area, and ranges from kayaks in Annapolis, Maryland, for $45 a day to a 10-year-old 30-foot powerboat in San Diego, for $400 a day. A newer ski/wakeboard boat in Austin can go for $600-700 a day. A 31-foot Hunter sailboat in San Francisco may rent for $500-600 a day. P2P companies typically take 30 to 40 percent of your rental (and in return, most P2P companies provide towing and insurance coverage for the rental period). The money you get for renting your boat has some other costs to it, too; maintenance goes up the more your boat gets used, and its resale value may decrease due to higher engine hours or wear and tear.

Meet 3 boat owners who make a living by renting out or chartering their vessels to customers stir-crazy from the pandemic — sometimes raking in as much as $200,000 a month

  • Insider spoke with 3 boat owners who earn money by renting out or chartering their vessels.
  • Some say business grew in the pandemic as people eager to head out saw boats as a safe way to do so.
  • One boat owner told Insider he handles 75 charters a week on average, grossing $200,000 per month.

Insider Today

With summer underway, people are looking to head out on the water in greater numbers.

The pandemic has only sparked even more interest, as people looking for a break from lockdowns turned to boating. Last year, there was a 35% jump in the number of boat purchases made by first-time buyers, according to the industry publication Trade Only Today .

Insider spoke with three boat owners who derive at least part of their income from renting out or chartering these vessels.

Nijole Adler's boat charter business was set in motion in 2012, when she and her husband, Rimas, bought a 36-foot sailboat for roughly $10,000.

The boat needed significant repairs, but after fixing it up to make it operational, the Chicago couple chartered it part-time while Nijole held her job in hospitality and Rimas worked as a mechanic.

"This really developed without us thinking about it," Nijole told Insider. "We just started sailing and inviting friends. Then they started inviting their friends and asking us if we could take them out maybe for a birthday or if they had guests in town. They started offering us money, and they started asking us to go out on their time. Then we decided to make a charge."

Five years ago, the Adlers decided to take the business full-time during sailing seasons.

In the off-seasons, Nijole and Rimas still work their hospitality and mechanic jobs.

They list their services on the online boat rental marketplace GetMyBoat, doing charter trips about 10 times per week on average. Their typical yearly costs include $1,600 for insurance and around $2,500 for maintenance. They also shell out $3,000 per season to moor their boat in the marina and $2,500 in the winter for storage. Other expenses include fees for their website, advertisements, and necessary licenses, among other things.

Because they're present on every charter trip, they don't sail on their own as much as they did before.

"In the season, we sail so much with charters that we don't go out just us," she said. "After sailing eight hours per day, we don't just go out for a couple more hours."

In 2020, the Adlers made the most they have ever made by chartering their boat.

They owe part of this success to an uptick in business from people feeling stir-crazy because of the pandemic.

"People were getting cabin fever; there was no place to go, nowhere to travel, and everybody wanted to go somewhere, so they just came locally to sail with us," she said. "Instead of going to the Caribbean, they came to Lake Michigan," she joked.

In Miami, boat captain Marcel Perdomo earns his living by doing bareboat charters, where no crew or provisions are included.

He owns two boats and brokers rentals for 34 other vessels owned by other captains.

Perdomo got his start in the business around four years ago, when he bought a used jet boat for $7,000.

He listed it for rentals on Craigslist and made around $650 a week offering up the boat for use.

"All of a sudden, people started calling; every weekend, people called, and then it was easy money," Perdomo said. "I was doing everything on my own. I didn't know anybody in the business."

Some time later, Perdomo stumbled across GetMyBoat and moved his listings there. He sold the jet boat and bought a new vessel to list on the platform.

As business took off, Perdomo quit his job selling traffic safety equipment in late 2019 to focus on the charters full-time.

He had been making $70,000 a year in that role before leaving.

"It was pretty scary," he said. "It was a big risk."

When the pandemic struck a few months later, his usually steady list of bookings disappeared.

"The business went down to zero," he said. "All the reservations were getting cancelled."

It wasn't long, though, before reservations started coming in again.

Perdomo chalks this up to restlessness from being stuck at home due to COVID-19.

"Residents were tired of isolation," he said. "They couldn't go to parks, they couldn't go to beaches. So they started Googling boat rentals."

Florida's sometimes-lax approach to handling COVID-19 was another key factor in getting business booming again.

"Having very few restrictions on COVID was the biggest thing," Perdomo said.

Even so, he says boats provided a way to have fun outdoors while safely keeping distance from other people.

"Boats can't be that close to each other," he said. "So it was a natural way of being apart."

Requests multiplied quickly, which prompted Perdomo to start brokering charters for other boat captains.

Today, he handles roughly 300 charters each month, raking in between $50,000 and $60,000 in gross sales per week. The vessels range in size from 21 to 92 feet, with the cheapest yacht going for about $120 an hour and the priciest running a tab of $1,200 per hour.

The two Yamaha jet boats Perdomo owns generate roughly $30,000 combined each month.

For each of the two boats, monthly costs include $1,500 for fuel, $6,000 for captains' salaries, $800 for marina slips, and $1,500 for maintenance. Insurance for his two boats runs him about $4,000 per year.

Perdomo estimates he'll gross around $2 million from charters this year. Business from GetMyBoat makes up roughly 70% of his income today, supplemented by bookings on his website and word-of-mouth referrals.

As Perdomo's operation grew, so too did his staff.

He now employs a handful of people in the Philippines who handle his web traffic, contracts, cancellations, and customer service. He also has a couple of salespeople working with him locally in Miami.

"It's big business right now," he said. "Going out boating is sort of like a lifestyle. When you go to Las Vegas, you go to a casino. A lot of tourists come here knowing that they're going to get on a boat."

In the UK, Poole resident Adam Dolman makes money renting out his 20-foot yacht named Skate, although he primarily works as a teacher.

Dolman and his wife bought the boat for around £8,500 (about $11,800) three years ago and have been renting it ever since.

"A lot of the yachting has gone luxury, but there's still a lot of people who still just want to go sailing; they don't want it to cost a fortune, and they want to enjoy it," Dolman said. "We thought to ourselves, 'There has to be a market for that.'"

Since mid-April, the couple has rented out the boat roughly five or six times per month, charging $175 per day.

They mainly advertise rentals on the online marketplace Borrow A Boat . Costs related to their yacht run the Dolmans about $3,500 per year. Last year, they broke even after business took a hit during the pandemic.

Before buying this yacht, Dolman owned a boat for the better part of two decades.

This, combined with his background as a yacht skipper and a stint as a sailing instructor, means it is particularly meaningful for him to see clients find the same happiness in sailing that he has long felt.

"It's actually quite enjoyable to be able to set that up," Dolman said, noting that he loves interacting with clients and helping them see "a different side to things" out on the water.

Well, these days, yachting with Boatsetter can be extremely affordable. When you arrange a yacht hire with Boatsetter, you have the option of splitting the price with several of your closest friends, which can make the price per person very affordable and it can also make the trip so much more memorable. Once you get the yacht out on the open water, you can also try out so many amazing activities, like wakeboarding or jet skiing. So many of our yachts come with lots of watersports equipment already included in the price when you hire a yacht. You surely know how expensive it can be to try out all of these types of watersports if they are all offered individually at a lake or a resort. Read on below to find out how you can take advantage of all of the wonderful opportunities we offer.

Learn how to experience a yacht affordably with Boatsetter

Apart from the watersports options we mentioned above, when you hire a yacht, you get the opportunity to explore so many amazing and scenic areas along the coast. For example, Florida offers so many enticing activities available to you right from your yacht. By browsing through our site, you can find yacht hires within a wide range of budgets and you can even adjust any reservations you make from a full to a half-day. So whether you select a pontoon, a Marquis yacht, or a catamaran, there are so many incredible places to explore while you enjoy your yacht rental .

You already know that Boatsetter allows potential renters to rent boats from private owners. We’ll discuss just how you as a renter can benefit from this arrangement further along in this article, and you’ll soon find out how much money you are saving by choosing to use a service like Boatsetter rather than purchasing your own yacht. We’ll start by looking at a typical yacht hire in a place like Miami, and break down the costs of spending a week on the yacht with a captain on board as well as a full crew to cater to the needs of all of your guests.

A sample price tag for a week on the water

A quick search of Boatsetter’s website to rent a yacht out of Miami , including a captain, for ten passengers for a week, yields the following selections, among others: an amazing 60 foot Ferretti with three staterooms . This yacht is the finest Italian built yacht worldwide, with sleek lines that make it stand out from any ordinary yacht. The galley provides a microwave, full fridge, ice maker, and double sink, as well as a Sony system, kayak, floating island, snorkeling gear, ice, bottled water, and towels.

There will probably be a few extra costs like dockage fees in some cases, as well as any types of food or alcoholic drinks that you choose to bring on board with you. But that would be the case no matter what type of vacation you take. The total cost for the boat itself, with a captain and several crew members included, would be about $2500 per day. That’s only $250 a day per person – which is far less than you would spend in many Miami hotel rooms these days!

It is also much, much less than it would cost you to purchase a boat like this and pay for all of the associated costs, just for the sake of using it a few times a year. Owning a boat like this can be incredibly expensive. In addition to boat insurance and registration costs , there are also high maintenance and storage fees, as well as various other related expenses. Here is a more detailed breakdown of some of the costs you would have to cover if you owned a boat like this.

The benefits of hiring an experienced captain

Often, Boatsetter customers are inexperienced boaters and they are in need of a USCG licensed and professional captain to allow them to relax and enjoy their trip. A yacht hire like the one described above comes with an experienced captain on board, who can be responsible for all kinds of things while you are enjoying your time on the yacht. Learn more about choosing your boat rental captain here.

All of the captains that we use at Boatsetter are required to have completed a USCG-approved Safe Boating Course , so you can be confident that they will be completely aware of all of the safety regulations that apply once you are out on the open water. Especially if you are looking to hire a large yacht like the Ferretti, you will really need somebody to know what they are doing on the boat. Here are just a few of the other things a boat captain will do for you during your yacht hire:

  • Navigate the waters and troubleshoot any mechanical failures on the yacht
  • Suggest popular boating locations, snorkeling/diving spots, swimming areas, dining options, fishing spots
  • Act as an onboard DJ or photographer to capture your special memories
  • Suggest when the weather might cause a change in plans
  • Act as an expert in any kind of emergency situation
  • Assist with docking/undocking or loading/unloading the boat
  • Share local boating and geographical knowledge

Enjoying some of the most memorable times of your life on the water

In the end, a Boatsetter yacht hire is all about enjoying the yacht for the time that you decide to be out on the water. For about $1500 each, you and your friends can enjoy a truly memorable week out on the clear, relaxing waters off Miami Beach, or any other location you prefer. One really good tip is to try and hire a yacht from a location nearby because then you will save plenty of money by not having to drive or fly to your destination. Why not search our database to discover all of the amazing yacht hires that are available near you?

Even boaters who live far inland in places like Arizona can benefit from Boatsetter’s services. You may not have an ocean nearby, but there are almost certainly some interesting lakes (like Lake Mead ) and rivers for you to explore by boat. Boatsetter offers all types of yacht hires all around the USA and also internationally. Boatsetter is the easiest way of finding your yacht hire by searching our database of boat rentals and yacht charters for your perfect boat.

Since 2013, Below Deck has been captivating TV audiences across the globe by offering a voyeuristic peek into life on board multi-million dollar luxury charter yachts . Taking readers behind the scenes, YachtCharterFleet identifies the yachts featured on the show, as well as those which have appeared on the celebrated spin-off series Below Deck: Mediterranean , Below Deck: Sailing , Below Deck: Down Under and the latest iteration, Below Deck: Adventure .

Bravo’s hit reality TV series Below Deck chronicles the lives of crew members who work and reside aboard a luxury yacht during the charter season.

Each season features a different crew configuration, and the episodes show how the crew members interact and deal with personal issues alongside their working lives. The seasons are filmed over six weeks, with every episode featuring a new group of charter guests.

Getting even closer to these Below Deck superstars, we take a look at each of the stand-out features of every yacht that has appeared on the show.

Below Deck (US)

Many crew members are recurring on the show;  the longest-standing is Captain Lee Rosbach, who been on the show since 2013. A fan favourite, he has been at the helm of every yacht on Below Deck and seen a number of different crew formations.

The latest Below Deck season 10 is rumoured to be his final swan song, although his legacy on the show is such that whoever replaces him will have very big shoes to fill.

Throughout the course of the show, the yachts have played an important role.

Hiring a Below Deck yacht will cost from €140,000 per week - and that price doesn't include expenses such as fuel. While some of the yachts were given an alias over the course of filming, their real names can now be revealed below; as well as the exact cost to rent them.

Ionain Princess season 1 Below Deck Mediterranean

Premiering on 3 May 2016, the very first season of Below Deck: Mediterranean , a spin-off of the increasingly popular franchise, took to viewers' screens. This time the ‘yachties’ took care of their guests onboard the motor yacht IONIAN PRINCESS  in the Mediterranean  destination of Greece .

The starring yacht IONIAN PRINCESS was delivered from Christensen in 2005 and was later refit in 2016 and again in 2021. Truly opulent, she bears interiors that are sleekly finished with a range of warmly toned woods and plenty of comfortable furnishings. She also boasts one of the largest sundecks for a yacht of her size.

Below Deck: Mediterranean Season 1 yacht IONIAN PRINCESS is not currently available for private yacht charter vacations.

Below Deck: Sailing Yacht

This is the first time the Below Deck franchise branched away from gleaming motor yachts, with the various weather issues that sailing yachts have to contend with adding even more drama and excitement.

The design of luxury sailing yachts  also creates far more confined crew areas than we are used to seeing on the original Below Deck . In general, sailing yachts tend to feature smaller galleys, compact stew stations and cramped crew quarters which are in closer proximity to the guests’ living areas, putting crew under increased pressure to deliver their signature silver service.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 3

In addition, deck crew are placed in a far more demanding role, with sailing yachts requiring increased accuracy and precision to safely maneuver and plenty of deck duties taking place in the midst of guest areas.

PARSIFAL III

Home to an impressive array of amenities, standout highlights include an expansive Jacuzzi, a large swim platform for easy access to the water and a gym. An advanced stabilization system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.
