The beautiful teak interior gives a warm feel below while providing 6' 2" of headroom and a spacious 10' 10" beam with plenty of comforts for the cruising family. There is a spacious U shaped galley to starboard with hot and cold pressure water, a 10" stainless steel sink with through-hull drain. It has a mini refrigerator (120 volt) installed with the original gimbaled 2 burner stove with oven provided separately. The galley also has plenty of counter space, a 6 cubic foot insulated ice box with insulated lid, a tilt-out dish caddy, a wine locker and additional storage drawers and cabinets. There is plenty of storage on board and two water tanks plus one water bladder for some 40+ gallons of water available. There is a navigation station to port and behind it there is a spacious 6' 6" quarter berth with opening ventilation ports. Forward of the nav station is the settee with seating for 4, and a convertible table that provides sleeping accommodation for 2 adults. All the way forward is the owners stateroom secluded by a private teak panel door, has a private changing area, hanging locker and bathroom with shower attachment on the sink. The head also has an 18 gallon holding tank for when mooring at the islands. On deck Beryl has everything you need for that casual afternoon sail, a cruise to the So-Cal islands or some competitive racing with a full crew. The vessel is designed and set up also for single handed sailing when you feel adventurous. The 6 gallon water heater is about one year old and the heat exchanger has been removed serviced and is like new. The motor is the Universal M25, 21 hp diesel and is bullet proof driving the boat on a windless day to 5-1/2-6 knots. As with any boat that has been enjoyed there are some issues for the buyer to be aware of: The hatches are crazed but not causing any issues. The upholstery is clean and healthy but is showing normal wear. 1985 LM 32 This 1985 LM 32 is located in Rhode Island She is a magnificent example of a canoe stern pilothouse sailboat, which typically provides excellent sea keeping ability. She comes equipped with radar, GPS, auto helm, and has a white bimini top over the cockpit as well as a blue mooring cover. Very comfortable below she's a great example of Danish boat building. The LM in this case stands for  Lunderskov Møbelfabrik. (I know-  easy for me to say). Let's just stick with LM. Powered by a Yanmar diesel with only 261 hours on it. All LM boats came with a very complete list of standard equipment, including lifelines, pulpits, speedometer, depthsounder, boarding ladders, anchor and rode, fenders, fire extinguishers, and even dishes and cutlery. She does have a crack in the forward hatch that has been repaired so there's no leakage, but you might want to consider getting it replaced.The LM32 The 32 shares all the obvious characteristics of the LM line—particularly the distinctive canoe stern and pilothouse. In most respects, it is simply a larger version of the smaller models. The boat is 32 feet in length and has a 27-foot, 10-inch waterline; its beam is 10 feet 8 inches, and it draws 4 feet, 11 inches. The bilge keel models (called twin-keel in some brochures) draw 4 feet, 1 inch. Displacement is 12,000 pounds, with 4,400 pounds of ballast.Accommodations The LM32’s cockpit is sizable considering that canoe-stern boats usually have shortened cockpits. There are bench seats on each side of the cockpit, and a large fold-out table easily can seat six. The boat has a white canvas bimini that covers the cockpit. There are lockers under each of the bench seats—propane tanks on the port side—and a huge locker under the cockpit sole. At the top of the rudder-stock is an attachment spot for the removable tiller, which can be used if you want to sail from the cockpit rather than from the pilothouse. The wheel steering in the pilothouse has a mechanical disconnect so the tiller moves freely. At the forward end of the bench seats on each side are the halyard and reefing lines, which run inside a channel on the side of the pilothouse and terminate in cam cleats in front of stainless  winches. The mainsheet has a single cam-cleat attachment point at the back edge of the pilothouse, and the sheet hangs down into the cockpit. At the front of the cockpit, double sliding doors open up to the pilothouse. On the starboard side is the steering station with a raised captain’s seat and a second fold-up seat that slides out so two people can share the helm. A wood steering wheel is immediately ahead, and engine controls, the electrical panel, and sailing instruments are directly in front of the helmsman. The chart table is immediately ahead of the wheel. This setup is good for laying down a chart so the helmsman can see it.

I would add better water storage, a water maker, fit the wind vane, purchase some spare sails, fit a full bimini cover etc. before committing to such a voyage. Mr. Corbin asked Mr. Dufour to increase the freeboard and flush the deck. In 1979, the first Corbin 39 came out of the resulting mold, and the Canadian manufacturer produced 129 Corbins until 1982. Most were sold as kits in varying degrees of completion. In 1982, a fire destroyed the deck molds, but because of continued strong demand, they decided to update the molds and continue production. The last Corbin 39 produced, hull number 199, was launched in 1990. The Corbin 39 is a double ender in the classic Scandinavian lineage of serious offshore cruisers like the Westsail 32. It wasn’t so long ago that 30- to 35-foot cruising sailboats were likely to be the largest yachts found in many a harbor. And while 40-something and even 50-something footers are all the rage at boat shows today, there’s a lot to be said for setting sail on a boat big enough to carry family and friends, but still small enough to be easily maintained and handled alone from time to time. Small cruising sailboats are simple to dock or tie up to a mooring, and finding long-term marina space is easier as well.

Choosing a cruising sailboat, no matter the size, is a big decision. And it helps to have a trusted list of boats to get started. Here, then, is a look at 10 of the best daysailers , weekenders and coastal cruising sailboats under 35 feet that are all in production and can be purchased new.

Alerion Sport 30

A quarter-century ago, Garry Hoyt launched what would come to be known as the daysailer genre with the introduction of the Alerion Express 28, a boat designed by the late Carl Schumacher that featured a minimal interior and a large cockpit where an owner and guests could enjoy the simple joy of sailing. Traditional and lovely looking—but with a quite modern underbody and a powerful sail plan—Hoyt, ever the marketer, proclaimed the boat to be “the prettiest girl at the dance.”

Since then, a number of siblings ranging from 20 to 41 feet have been added to the Alerion family, including the Alerion Sport 30, which retains the graceful sheer line, oval ports and stylish overhangs of the original Schumacher design. Bavaria Cruiser 34

In every Boat of the Year contest, it seems, a boat rises up after sea trials to make a lasting impression on the judges. For 2018, that boat was the Bavaria Cruiser 34.

Dufour Grand Large 360

Dufour Yachts introduced its new 360 Grand Large model to CW’s Boat of the Year team in 2018 as a coastal cruiser intended for a couple or perhaps a small family. With that in mind, judge Alvah Simon found numerous clever elements to praise within the boat’s 35-foot-2-inch hull—a relatively modest LOA compared to the many 40-, 50- and 60-footers on display at the U.S. Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland.

After a roughly 10-year hiatus from the U.S. marketplace, the Slovenian builder Elan is back in a big way. For the 2017 Boat of the Year contest, the company launched a pair of new boats in the States, including the Elan E4, a 34-foot-9-inch performance cruiser with an emphasis on performing, designed by renowned British naval architect Rob Humphreys. The brand has been in business for seven decades and lately is perhaps even better known in America for its skis. Not surprisingly, given its complementary product lines—lots of sailors are fine skiers—its boats are as sleek and sporty as its boards.

Grand Soleil 34

Way back in the 1970s, when the well-known Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was just getting started, its first model was a Finot-designed 34-footer. With over 300 units sold, it was an instant success, and launched the company on an upward trajectory that spanned the intervening decades, mostly with an ongoing series of much larger, more complex racer/cruisers. For 2020, the builder decided to return to its roots with a completely revamped Grand Soleil 34, and it’s a terrific boat.

Value. How does one determine it? Price is most certainly a factor. In the case of new boats, and our Boat of the Year competition, it means something more. As sailors, we wish to recognize good boats that not only are affordable but offer other, tangible rewards. The ability to get couples and families out on the water, to have a weekend escape, to take them on coastal vacations and even maybe a sabbatical to the islands, all without breaking the bank. For 2019, the judging panel determined that one boat had the potential to do these things better than the rest, which is why they awarded the Best Value prize to the Hanse 348.

With a price tag under $200,000, during sea trials the Hanse 348 wowed the judging team from the get-go. “In only about 8 knots of breeze, we were seeing 5.7 knots upwind and pointing very nicely, and even registered 6.5 knots once we cracked off,” said Tim Murphy. “It’s a pretty sweet little boat.”

Italia 9.98

Of the performance cruisers that made their North American debut in 2020, in terms of sheer appearance, the futuristic 34-foot Italia 9.98 was easily the most distinctive. There are actually two versions of the boat: the 34 Club—which is the cruising alternative, the primary features of which are its twin wheels—and the 34 Fuoriserie—the racing model, and the one we tested, with its tiller steering being the identifying characteristic.

13 Popular Full Keel Sailboats Worth Considering

Full keel sailboats are very stable and durable - they are great for cruising long distances. But there are disadvantages too. Let's look at what models to consider, and why.

Here are 13 good full keel sailboats that are worth considering:

First of all let's have a look at why you should even be preferring full keel sailboats to a more traditional, widespread classical fin keel design.

Full Keel Advantages

As with everything, there are plenty of pros and cons on each side. Full keels generally provide better handling if the weather gets tricky, they track better, provide more stability downwind, and generally stabilize the boat movements better.

Furthermore, they are way more robust, thus less prone to damage. Running ashore isn't as big of a deal as it is with a fin keel and your rudder and propeller will be more protected with the mass of the keel in front of them.

Full Keel Disadvantages

With more mass and drag comes less speed. Plus the large surface area underwater holding the direction will result in a wider turning radius, which might be annoying in smaller spaces.

Fin keel advantages.

The largest advantage of fin keels is their speed. They also provide better maneuvering and a better turning radius.

Fin Keel Disadvantages

It is inevitably more prone to damage though, wear and tear will be a way bigger issue than a full keel. They won't have your back when a gust comes since the water-resistance to the side will be smaller.

It seems then that for serious longer passages, liveaboards, and long-term sailing, full keels are better. As long as you don't care for speed as much, but are concerned about the boat having your back, this is the answer. So let's now look at the superstars of the full keel universe.

The very prototype of a long-distance tough cruiser. It has been with us since 1963 and happens to be among the first fiberglass boat models produced on a mass scale. Nicholson 32 went out of production in 1981 and it was a model approved for the 2018 Golden Globe Race, proving that even older Nicholsons are still standing strong due to their toughness and ease of repair.

They were supposedly as durable as if made out of steel. Though I'll leave up to you whether you want to see that as a marketing claim or reality, such a statement can not be made without some base.

Plus the newer models have a lot of interior space, are manageable for solo sailing, and provide a sturdy ride to take one around the world.

The story here is similar to the above Nicholson - meaning that we are looking at one long-lasting high-quality cruiser. Not just because of this specific model's build - Island Packet in general was always known for this. And it is among the very few companies that, in the modern era, keep making full keel boats.

In other words, you don't see many shipyards focusing on full keels these days, so if you want one and you would rather go with a new boat, Island Packet will be one of the stops you will very probably make when doing your research.

If you are looking for reliable cruisers, you will like this one, since cruising is what it was built for, even if it meant sacrificing some performance aspects. It has a wide beam, a lot of interior space, all of the amenities a comfy cruiser should have, such as a big refrigerator with a freezer, as well as a fully equipped kitchen. The long keel here serves as a comfort helper, since, as mentioned before, it adds to the stability and reduces motion.

Not to sound repetitive, but the word 'reliability' has to be mentioned again. It seems that boat builders who choose the full keel design have something in common.

But since this particular boat was born during the Second World War and has been going strong to this very day, what other words to describe it? It has the Nordic blood in its veins since it was thought into existence by the Scandinavian Yacht Racing Union and since it prefers just about everything over comfort.

The boat is very stable, not just because of its full keel, but also because of its insane 55% ballast ratio. For those who haven't come across this before, the ballast ratio is the ratio of the ballast weight relative to the boat weight. So for instance the nearly 9 tonne Bavaria 40 with its almost 3 tonne ballast has a ballast ratio around 30 percent.

Thus you can imagine that a boat that 'wastes' more than half of its weight on ballast is serious about rigidity. These are performance racer numbers. But of course, if you are designing a boat that has to withstand the Scandinavian storms, you don't have a choice than to go overboard with specs. So if this toughness is what you seek, look no further.

...although as far as I know, all Cape Dory boats have full keels, regardless of their length. Their 36-foot model is just their most popular one. Cape Dories are known for their sturdiness, ability to cross the oceans because of their stability, and relative ease of handling.

They were engineered by Carl Alberg, who was inspired by the Scandinavian Folkboat, where reliability is worth more than comfort, or the interior space. This boat rocks a heavy rig for hardcore traveling, but its 1.5-meter draft makes it ideal for coastal cruising as well.

What's quite interesting about this particular model is that during its lifespan it went through very few changes. Boats usually evolve, sailors' feedback is taken into consideration for upgrades, but Cape Dory 36 remained relatively unchanged inside or out. This is a big compliment, since the brand started out in 1963, stopped production in 1991, and sold its blueprints so that they could be built further. Talk about longevity.

Let's progress in technology! Just because a long keel is an old-fashioned or more traditional approach, it doesn't mean it remains monolithic in its ideology. There were innovations in the concept, such as cutaways in the keel, to reduce the biggest drawback of this design, the drag.

So it only makes sense that Vancouver, a company that had distinctiveness and innovation in its mission and vision, would take part in this. Their 32-foot model that begun its lifespan in the early eighties, had a deeply cutaway forefoot, plus a rudder that was wider the deeper it was underwater, meaning its widest point was at its lowest point. This was to increase efficiency, and rudder response.

Technicalities aside, this boat was very well made, no corners cut, no expenses spared. This resulted in quite pricey vessels, out of reach of many, but much time has passed since, so today it can be yours for around 40 000 USD and up. And since the build quality was so high back then, you can still enjoy a proper boat, usually at a higher quality than boats equal its age.

The great thing about Australian sailboat makers is that they design their boats for long passages. How else would they get off of the continent? Freya 39 is a good example of this since it has not only circled the globe many times but also won the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race three times consecutively. And that's a famously hard race.

The boat is built like a tank, with thicker fiberglass walls than you would find in its rivals. Despite that, its owners claim to have crossed over two hundred miles per day on it, a figure that is well known when it comes to this model. Which sounds plausible with its 7.8 kts of hull speed.

Its construction makes her one stable boat since it has been noted that during races, it was able to carry a spinnaker longer than its competitors, well into the 30 knots of wind speed.

The only drawback here is that if you fancy it, since it is so highly valued, and in demand, it will be tricky to find one to buy. And once you do, prepare to pay around 60 000 - 90 000 USD for it.

This one comes with a story attached to it. Once upon a time, a naval engineer Nick attempted to sail around the world. Halfway through, his boat gave up, which meant a lot of trouble for Nick, but he exited this disaster with a pretty precise idea for what his next project would be. He set on to design a boat that would be so sturdy that his sailing misfortune would never repeat.

Out of this incident paired with a smart brain, Wylo 2 was born. To make sure his design stands, after putting this boat on the water, he proceeded to live on it, while circling the globe a few times.

Others, seeing this success, bought his designs and they became quite widespread. As you might have guessed, this boat has a lot of space for living, for storing equipment and provisions, so it is comfy to live on, not only for your body but because of its sturdiness, for your mind too. These designs have accomplished some astonishing feats in all corners of the world, so if you put your trust in this design, you won't be making a mistake.

If I said this boat is sturdy and ready for just about any destination, I'd really be repeating myself now. So while that's true, let's talk about what's special about Tradewinds 33.

It has a rather small cockpit, so on-deck dinners while watching the sunset with the whole crew might be a bit improvised, but the space saved is used for an impressively spacious interior as well as a nearly flat deck. So moving about is a pleasure.

For liveaboards, this is a good idea, since storage space will be plentiful. Plus it's an elegant looking boat, with a forestaysail as a default setup. So rock on.

Time for a larger boat. So that if you want something that won't lack anything you might wish for, including space, I have something for you too. All Endurances are full keels, so if you fancy a smaller model, there is a way.

Even though it is relatively new, (you will find models from around 1995) it will make you feel like a medieval pirate, with its old-school helm, wooden interior, and a spacious aft cabin that has large windows facing back!

It is a proper bluewater cruiser, built in South Africa based on a famous Peter Ibold's Endurance blueprint. It sleeps a whole family, so if a circumnavigation with a few friends is what you seek, this is one for you.

If you are up for some single-handed sailing, pause here for a bit. Small sailboats are usually nimble, on the top of it, this one is also quite sturdy and stable, as full keels are.

You won't find much space below the deck, so don't expect to have a party of more than around two people, but at least it's a good looking interior, with charming round windows and many of the usual amenities.

They say that Mason sailboats are premium quality for a non-premium price. I wonder whether them being built in Taiwan has something to do with it.

Here is a quote by an owner of a 1986 model that says it all: "I am absolutely captivated by the boat and am not objective at all in my feelings toward her. The general construction is of the highest standard. Like an Irish hunter, she is a workhorse and a lady-maybe not quite as fast around six furlongs as a racehorse, but for the long pull, through timber, brush, and over walls, she is really something."

Now although this owner admits subjectivity, this boat indeed was built with quality in mind. Sturdiness too - not only is its fiberglass hull properly solid, but it also features longitudinal stringers to add further rigidity.

There is a lot of brightwork, which might sound nice at first glance, but since it requires quite a lot of maintenance, some owners even said they could do with less wood if it meant less upkeep.

All in all though, when it comes to getting a lot of boat for not a lot of money, this is it.

Does it make sense to even praise how heavy and sturdy this boat is built? Probably not at this point. Just know it ticks all the boxes. It is made of 12 layered fiberglass for Pete's sake.

The design was based on ideas of the Norwegian engineer Colin Archer, who made his boats such that they could withstand the northern seas. Pair that with the fact that the interior here is surprisingly spacious with 6 ft 2 in of headroom and you've got yourself one comfortable circumnavigator.

The issue stemming from the heavy build and a full keel, which is a slower pace, applies here more than usual though. This boat is absolutely reliable, but don't expect winning speed races.

Sadly, Westsail 32 was in production only for some 9 years. Sales were booming, they made over 800 boats, but bad business practices and cash flow issues resulted in its demise.

Not the author, the boat. If beauty and elegance are what you are after, this one will catch your eye. Just as was the case with Mason, these boats were produced in Taiwan. But since the goal of the engineers was to create the 'ultimate cruising sailboat' and they spared no expense, expect to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for these boats, even though decades old.

The gorgeous classical design paired with the high build quality makes these exclusive pieces of work, plus quite a modern one since they ceased production in the 90s. So if you don't mind the higher price mark and are looking for something relatively new, that will, thanks to the build quality, last you for many years to come, this might be your choice.

Full keel sailboats are sturdy. Not only is that because of the full keel which itself provides a lot of structural integrity. But also because the choice of putting the full keel in means you are building something that prefers ruggedness and reliability over anything else. So it is logical that the rest of the boat will be built in the same fashion.

So if you don't mind sacrificing the few knots of extra speed, if you don't mind the smaller pool to choose from, if you want a boat that will have your back in pretty much any situation and place you will choose to go to, if you want to sail the Scandinavian design, go for it.

When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."

Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.

Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."

A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. Travel beyond Europe - Good tour companies?

We've traveled in Europe with Rick Steves, independently, and with a small group. We're looking beyond Europe and are wondering what companies best replicate the RS experience. We're looking for small groups of less than 25 people, not being overscheduled, especially with captive "shopping opportunities", and local guides. We're looking for comfortable accommodations and local restaurants, not luxury hotels and touristy buffets.

We've traveled with a small company in the Galapagos and liked it, and went to Oaxaca with GAdventures and enjoyed that, too.

I've heard of Overseas Adventure Travel, National Geographic, and Gate One Travel. I'm looking for info on companies that offer good value and experience. Please share any insight into tour companies you like and their strengths and weaknesses, such as cost, group size, and experience.

I know good travel is subjective, and one person's preferences and budget are different from another's. With feedback I'll still need to research my options. Your insights are appreciated.

One caveat about Overseas Adventure Travel (commonly called OAT) is that I have not yet taken a trip with them yet, but have heard so many good things about them here that I signed up for a tour to Egypt and Jordan with them in early 2025. So far everything has been great.

Some of the comments I've heard here is that their guides are really good. The Egypt/Jordan tour attracted me because it's a very small group (from 8-16 people total). I also liked that they were touring on the Nile with the small Egyptian dahabeya boats, rather than the larger cruise ships. You can have them take care of the flight arrangements if you want. And they do not charge a single supplement fee for many cruises (although this may not apply to you). I'm also including a few other posts that discuss them.

Small group, native tour directors, better hotels than RS, bellman service so you can bring any size bag you want, excellent meals mostly with wine or beer included, no shopping stops. Local guides.

The prices qouted on their webpage include airfare but you can call them for land only prices.

Excellent customer service. I've traveled with them four times.

We have had a great experience with Gate 1 Travel. Also, for a safari in Kenya and/or Tanzania we loved Good Earth Tours ( a firm in Tanzania). In the past, we have enjoyed Trafalgar (New Zealand), that was excellent, but a bit pricey. We had an excellent tour of Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, Peru with Peru Agency Tours.

We did some great travel tours in Russia and China with a firm that is out of business.

For a great four day Canadian Rockies tour from Vancouver, Key West Tours was super and the price was great.

Not me, but two different friends of mine swear by Natural Habitat Adventures, depending upon where you might want to travel.

Thanks, everyone for your input. It's very useful. There are a lot of companies out there and a lot of ways to travel. This gives me a head start when evaluating future trips.

Scott, there are a few tour companies that have been started by former Rick Steves guides, and all have gotten good reviews here. Sarah Murdoch is one - she now runs Adventures with Sarah and has tours all over the world. Another one is Imprint Travel started by Reid Coen. Seymour Tours with Mark Seymour is another one of these - his tours are mainly in the UK and France, but several members here have taken them and rave about them.

All three are smaller tour companies and use the same type of tour philosophy as Rick Steves, with small groups, lots of physical activity, you carry your own luggage and so on.

Gate 1 is a good company. However, the only tours they run that are guaranteed to be a “small group” (max of 22) are their “Discovery” tours. Their other tours can run to as many as 40 people.

Our Gate 1 tours were not small group and we had 30 in one and 33 in another.

I've done 3 small group trips with Road Scholar and like their offerings. They have larger groups as well so make sure you sort by group size if you search their site. They have tons of small group tours. I like Road Scholar's pacing. They tend to spend more nights in most cities vs. other tour groups.

I've used Insight Vacations in the past for travel to areas other than Europe and found them to be excellent, and very close in many ways to the "Rick Steves tour experience". I would definitely travel with them again.

I've also traveled with Gate1 and GAdventures - not the RS experience, but I primarily wanted them for logistics/transport and they served that purpose. I had very good local guides on the GAdventures tour in Ecuador and Peru, the company has a pretty big presence in S. America. There was good communication from the company ahead of and during the trip, and things that went awry (like canceled flights) were outside their control. We had 20ish people in the group, which I think was probably unusually low. GAdventures uses a module system for tours, so your group size fluctuates depending on which tour you pick and how long you're gone. So for my Ecuador part of the tour we had 20 ish people, but only 10 of us continued on to the Peru portion. Pros and cons to that if you're wanting a cohesive group. One pro was we shed some of the difficult personalities after the first part (but con, we picked up new ones). Hotels were decent quality and well located for the most part. For solo travelers their single supplement was high compared to trip cost.

The guide for Gate1 in Vietnam was great, but the group size and composition (close to 40 travelers, many newbies due to the Groupon offer for the tour) made it impossible for him to excel at his craft. Their hotels were business style and typically not located in center of town (though you know this ahead of time as they disclose the specifics before you book). Gate1 uses the same module aspect as GAdventures - in Bangkok we had two people, Cambodia five, and Vietnam 40. Their single supplement was more affordable.

Short story, I'd use either company again, but it would depend on a number of factors that would be trip-dependent and based on comparisons to other options available at the time.

I just returned from my third Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) tour, this one "Crossroads of the Adriatic" through countries of the former Yugoslavia, and I like them a lot. I think they offer what your message describes. Group size maximum 16 on most tours, free single supplement readily available also on most. Impressions of the others you mention, with caveat that I have not myself traveled with them: Gate 1: I saw something of their operations as their groups were frequently in the same hotels as our OAT, and their guides (as ours did) posted daily itineraries on the bulletin board, which were fun to compare. As stated by other commenters, their groups are larger, often at least twice the size of OAT. Gate 1 groups tend to have more of a mix of travelers from different countries, for better or worse. OAT focuses on the U.S. market and virtually all OAT travelers are Americans. The equivalent Balkan Gate 1 tours seemed to be a bit faster paced (less time in each city) and have relatively more "optional" (i.e., extra charge) activities than OAT, compared to those included in the tour price (which of course you can skip if you want, but have paid for, so most don't). The guides seemed equivalent -- ours was great, but they are independent contractors who often work with different companies, so she had done Gate 1 tours also, and knew the ones doing the Gate 1 tours we encountered. But obviously you'll get more personalized attention from your guide in a group of 16 than in one of 40. National Geographic: With "name brand" tours like these (or Smithsonian, college alumni affiliation, etc.) I think you pay a LOT for that brand name. I've seen the Nat Geo brochures for Egypt, for example, which I did with OAT, and it looked like they charge at least twice as much for what appears to be more or less the same thing in every important respect (accommodations, tour length, activities). These brand name tours seem often to have a U.S. expert (such as a college professor) accompanying the group in addition to local guide, but frankly, there has never been a time on any of my OAT tours that I felt that I would have needed or wanted to be guided by a U.S. professor instead of, or in addition to our incredibly knowledgeable in-country guides, or had any desire to pay extra for that.

We don't usually do multi-day tours, but we did in Namibia. We did a private, custom safari with Tracking Namibia Safaris. This was recommended to us by someone on the Safari Talk forums who had done two trips with the owner.

It was absolutely wonderful, and wasn't any more expensive than doing a group trip. The owner, Francois, designed our itinerary based on the list I gave him, finding our accommodations for us, and finding savings for us in the process. The lovely thing about being on a private safari was that we could choose how long to spend at a sighting (within reason, of course), and sometimes choose our route, based on Francois' description (i.e. longer and more scenic, or shorter and also scenic but slightly less so).

So, I guess I didn't exactly answer your question. It's not exactly a Rick Steve's style experience, but it's excellent.

I don't want to knock anybody, and I have no personal experience, and if I have misremembered somebody will correct me; but with the new resurgence of the scourge of covid and stories in several of the forums here about people having to cancel or drop off tours because of catching covid; isn't OAT one of the companies which we read a lot about here on the Forums a couple of years ago because of their reluctance to refund in that case?

Our originally scheduled OAT Egypt tour was in 2020. We didn't ask for a refund, but rescheduled it for a year later, which worked out very well. Regarding those who get COVID (or have another medical problem) on the tour and have to drop out and/or incur additional expense, I think their policies are the same as most companies, which is that that's what travel insurance is for (which they sell as an add-on, or you can buy your policy separately). One person did get COVID on one of my OAT tours, and while I don't know the financial details, I do know the guide and their other staff worked very hard to make sure she was well taken care of in terms of medical treatment, accommodations and onward travel.

Good to know, Slate! And Nigel, before I booked my tour, I scoured this forum for mention of OAT to check reviews and so on. I didn't see anything about what you were talking about.

@Mardee - I do recall that there were stories about tough refunds from OAT. I also have seen tons of stories about poor airfare connections and routing if you let OAT book. But I think poor airfare choices are a problem when any tour company books your flight.

I am giving OAT a try later on this month for a Baltics tour. It's my first trip with them. I'll post a review at some point, I am sure:)

My wife and I have used OAT and Nat Geo, but don't love the larger sizes of their groups which can often feel like a "bus tour". I believe Gate One has even larger groups, but we've never traveled with them.

We've found some companies that send much smaller groups and give a more "intimate" feel. They still give you the group travel dynamic which we love, but without being in a huge group at each destination and have more direct access to the tour guides which is really what we want. My personal favorite has become Wilderness Travel. They're a little more expensive than GAdventures and OAT, but you absolutely get your money's worth. My husband and I just used Gate 1 to go to Vietnam in October. It was our first experience of a group tour and we were quite pleased. There were 37 in our group, but it didn't feel too large to us. The tour group members were well traveled, some independently and some on multiple Gate 1 tours.

The hotels were nice and mostly well located to do things on our own if we wished. Not quirky, but that's fine with me. I appreciated that we never had to handle our own luggage and there were no buddies or name games. I hate that kind of thing.

Our guide was super well organized, personable, and incredibly knowledgeable. We liked it so much that we booked another Gate 1 trip to China for May 2024.

It is encouraging to me hear the positive reports about Gate 1 travel. I am going to try them for first time next October.

I love Rick Steves tours. I've done 5 of them. However, when I started looking at Turkey and could compare the two tours side by side for the same dates, I discovered I could follow the same basic route and save $1700 by trying Gate 1. (Single room on both tours and all the "optionals" from Gate 1 added in). I don't expect the tour to be the same experience and I know that there will be more people on it. I do think it will be a good experience. I will report back to the forum afterwards with the results of this experiment.

I went to Belize last year and have an upcoming trip to Japan with EF Go Ahead tours. Was very pleased and the group size was 16 for Belize. I think they cap at 22. They take tours all over the world and I know four or five other couples who have used them multiple times and have always been happy.

I'm going to take my first tour with Travel Fever Tours next month. It's a tiny company (mom and pop) in Vermont. I have friends who have traveled with them. They just have a few destinations. I'm going to Oaxaca and the max on the tour is 12 people. I think this is the case on most of their tours, which are mostly art oriented, culinary oriented or hiking oriented (Camino, among others). They're currently offering eight tours between January and September 2024.

We have friends who have enjoyed Exodus, particularly their Costa Rica trip. They are going with the same company for Italy in 2024. Another set of friends loves Nat Hab (Natural Habitat) that is connected to the World Wildlife Fund. They are actually traveling the world based on trips to see certain animals. I have done 12 domestic outdoor trips with Sierra Club but they also do international trips.

Scott, do you have on your current bucket list that you can post? Depending on where you would like to go I am sure this board can provide you with a lot tour companies and guides.

A bit more on Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT): we used them for an African safari last year. The guides were outstanding, they include several experiences to interact with the local people and culture, and groups are limited to 16 participants or less - not a large bus tour. I personally recommend their quality - and very competitive pricing!

Nigel’s right, there were several posts on this Forum by people 3 1/2 years ago who wanted complete cash refunds when Covid-19 broke out. OAT apparently offered credits for future travel, and while Rick Steves Tours apparently gave full refunds at the time, apparently OAT did not.

I can’t verify the details of all that, but we had also signed up for a trip this year to Jordan and Egypt, which also originally included Israel. We actually were supposed to be on that tour right now, but after the war started, OAT took the Israel portion off the trip, and added Cyprus, plus Greece as an option. Well, a week-and-a-half ago, they cancelled the trip outright for safety reasons, and offered a complete cash refund. They also offered a credit incentive if we rescheduled the trip into the future - which we’ve done. OAT has a substantial catalogue of trips around the world, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better company for a better price.

Ed: Bucket list is pretty much everywhere. :) , but Japan is on our shortlist, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

We have gone to Japan and Egypt/ Jordan with Odysseys Unlimited. Their tours have a maximum numbers of 24 participants. Lovely hotels, excellent guides. Highly recommend them. These are our only tours as we are basically independent travelers.

We were on a tour in Yellowstone NP two weeks ago and our driver / guide who works for Xanterra spoke very highly about both National Geographic and Tauck. With any tour company it comes down to what you want to do, how active you want to be, do you want to travel privately or with a group and ultimately how much you want to spend.

We recently took a Globus Journeys small group(21 people) Highlights of the South Pacific Tour to New Zealand and Australia. It was wonderful! I posted a trip report on the New Zealand portion in the Beyond Europe Forum and will do Australia next week. There were no captive shopping opportunities(except olive oil tasting) which really wasn't much of a shopping thing since transporting those bottles would not be easy. I highly recommend this tour. We have never been on a RS tour so don't know how it would compare. This is not a blanket recommendation for Globus but an enthusiastic recommendation for a tour that was done really well.

Bucket list is pretty much everywhere, but Japan is on our shortlist, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

The Best of Eastern Europe

Very well planned and organized. CEO was round-the-clock attentive to the trip and each individual. Lodgings were excellent and well selected geographically. My only criticism would be that the name of the tour should be Central and not Eastern Europe. Would definitely recommend Gadventures to fellow travelers.

Good route which covered the main attractions of Mid Europe. The trip is compact and efficient and the optional excursions add on the contents. Tour leader Matt is full of knowledge about various area’s history and events, he also looked after the team well and tried to accomodate customers’ needs, A really caring and professional tour leader. Pascal is not only a brilliant driver who tried to park the coach as close as possible for group’s access, he was also taking care of the team in many ways and his warm greetings and kind words won our hearts. If you haven’t or only seen a couple of European countries, this trip will be the one to open your eyes or the one to expend your European experiences. Additionally, the trip is good value for money.

Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

Eva and Rene were amazing tour guides. Disappointed that we didn't see the Eiffel Tower at night. Several times we were dropped in town at night with not enough time to get a meal before being taken to the hotel. Some hotels were out of town with nothing within walking distance. Thank you to Rene for arranging for a group of us to go to the Moulin Rouge.

European Cavalcade (End Paris, 18 Days)

Amazing!!! No complaints, loved it!! Tour guide was extremely competent and the driver was very very good. So many memories made, highly recommended!

Best of Central Europe

This tour had everything I was looking for! Great Eastern European food, great local beer, and a variety of things to do for any type of interest. The hikes were fantastic, and the transportation between stops was well organized. This tour offers a good balance of free time and time with the group, which allows you to come together at the end of the day over dinner to discuss your day.

All About Balkans (4 Star Hotels)

The itinerary was incredible. We saw magnificent places we would have never visited on our own. Tour guide Simone was great, knowledgeable, and always made sure we don't get lost. Local guides were excellent too. Pace was not too intense, allowing us to enjoy each location and have some free time. Thank you, Chris, our excellent driver through tough mountain terrain. CONS: Travel Talk still advertise that the Group Size is 13-35. In reality, the bus was packed full, 48 participants. Travel Talk should change this false advertisement because it is misleading. Hotels were of excellent quality and location, in each place, EXCEPT one: Hotel Central Park in Trebinje. It was disgusting. The minute we entered the hotel we were attacked by a huge smoking Lobby with tens of people smoking everywhere, and it was the same smell in the hallways and inside the rooms! Even the linen smelled like cigarettes. Within two minute your hair and clothes were soaked with smell of ashtray. We all commented on how terrible it was. Breakfast was bad or rather, there was nothing there. Travel Talk should take snot contract with this hotel. It merits one star. They should choose another, since we stayed there for two nights. Everyone complained about this hotel smell everywhere and all the time. Otherwise, I would have given this trip 5 stars.

So honestly when we were assigned to this company through Tour Radar and looked at the reviews we were a little worried. I tried to hope for the best and assume that people who DO NOT have great experiences write more reviews. I was absolutely correct. We had AMAZING tour guides. Knowledgeable, kind, helpful. I think this company does an amazing job of moving people from one destination to another especially when it seems that itineraries overlap offering everyone the trip they desire. The hotels far outweighed our expectations. Of course there were small hiccups with time losses and changes in plans for the day but for the price and to get a brief view of Europe I would call it an outstanding tour.

Martina was an excellent tour guide and Florin was a great driver! I always knew what we were doing, time and place to meet. Felt safe in the bus, he was an excellent and safe driver! The tour was fun and we saw some beautiful and wonderful places. The only place I wasn't too fond of was the place in Germany we stayed at. Other than that all the accommodations ere great!
