The 10 Best Explorer Yachts for High-Seas Adventures

Damen SeaXplorer Superyacht

Unlike fashion trends that seem to move as fast as a Redbull F1 car, the yachting industry takes its time adopting new ideas. There seems to be one exception. Explorer vessels, born out of the owners’ desires to go farther and stay longer, without sacrificing creature comforts, is developing with some urgency.

Several dozen builders and designers are now focusing on explorers, but they are also consulting with adventure travel firms that have a long history of using expedition yachts in remote parts of the globe. ICON Yachts, for example, collaborated with Cookson Adventures and the International Seakeepers Society on its Project Mission in both the overarching design and the details found across the yacht. Adventure outfitter EYOS employs its expertise routinely with Damen’s explorer vessels, most recently with the 190-foot Pink Shadow.   EYOS has a list of 50 features that separate authentic explorers from faux versions that might look the part but lack the necessary infrastructure and design elements.

Long-range cruising, system redundancy for autonomy at sea, and storage to carry specialist equipment like submersibles are some of the requirements that define expedition boats. There’s also deck configuration for the easy launch of tenders and toys, along with strong, ice-class hulls and climate-controlled areas comfort in extreme polar and tropic regions.

We culled through the latest fleet of explorers with multiple lengths and designs, selecting a single feature that we think makes it best in class. Here are 10 of our favorites.

Best Pilothouse: Doggersbank 77 Offshore

polar class expedition yacht

More than 700 Doggersbank motoryachts have been built since the 1960s, with the latest model scheduled for delivery in 2025. The robust, offshore vessels are designed by Dutch studio Vripack for long ocean passages, assisted by a high, flared bow. “It prevents green water from hitting the wheelhouse windows in rough seas, and together with the Portuguese bridge, ensures the captain’s view is not obstructed,” Joost Mertens, Doggersbank fleet manager, told Robb Report . “The yacht’s steel hull ensures the yacht sits better in the water making it less vulnerable to wind and high waves.”

Best Deck Configuration: Columbus Crossover 42

polar class expedition yacht

The Columbus Crossover 42 is defined by both straight and angled surfaces,  tapered stern sections and a concentration of volume in the bow that is becoming on many explorers. What is atypical is the yacht’s compact but flexible dimensions that accommodate a large cockpit tender and a 108-square-foot swimming pool with relaxation areas. Sold to an U.S. customer, it’s scheduled for delivery in 2025.

Best Multipurpose Stern: Bering B165

polar class expedition yacht

Turkish boatbuilder Bering Yachts revealed details of its new 162-foot flagship explorer yacht, the B165 , at the Dubai International Boat Show in March. The yacht can carry 18,400 gallons of fuel, which the builder says will give it a 4,000 nautical mile range when cruising at 12 knots. It also has a 2,640-gallon holding tank. What singles the B165 out among other explorers, however, is its multi-purpose stern area for both function and form. The elongated aft deck has a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. When the bulwarks are folded down, the space becomes an even larger overwater terrace. When the pool is not in use, it can be used as a covered storage area for water toys and expedition equipment. The yacht’s two tenders are also stored on the aft, making it a flexible space for both equipment and guests.

Best Family-Friendly Concept: Project Mimer

polar class expedition yacht

This 197-foot expedition concept by Tillberg Design of Sweden caters to family travel with a helicopter pad as well as multiple tenders and toys. It’s pitched by the studio as an introduction to true explorer yachting. It has a functional crew layout for efficient operations and an upper deck owner’s suite with a forward terrace and spa pool. With a hull that will be built to the Polar Code Category, the concept also has an optional helipad aft and long list of toys, from an electric luxury tender and two expedition RIBS to quad bikes, a submersible, Jet Skis, and, of course, an amphibious vehicle. The five-decked yacht sleeps 12 guests with crew quarters for 17 and an additional staff member, such as a nanny.

Best Ice Explorer: Damen SeaXplorer 105

polar class expedition yacht

Damen’s 345-foot SeaXplorer 105 is the largest model in the SeaXplorer range, with exterior design by Azure Yacht Design. The platform was developed under the guidance of expedition specialists EYOS Expeditions, who considered over 150 design criteria, from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements. But it is EYOS’s expertise in the polar regions—it facilitated the first heli-ski charter in Antarctica and the first 3,200-foot sub dive to the Antarctic midnight zone—that gives the vessel its point of difference. The SeaXplorer has an ice-strengthened hull and a specially shaped icebreaking stern to maneuver through rough terrain.

Best Interior: Project Fox

polar class expedition yacht

On top of having a cool name, Project Fox has a bright, contemporary interior, courtesy of London’s Q Design, that is becoming more common on expedition yachts. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is also one of the yacht’s standout features, with its marble en suite and hardwood floors. The salon is also luxe, with white walls that brighten up travel even in areas that are sunlight deprived. Project Fox also has four other staterooms.

Best Autonomy: Project Master

polar class expedition yacht

ICON Yachts’s Project Master was a transoceanic offshore support vessel before the Dutch shipyard began a refit to turn it into an explorer yacht (see before and after inset). It’s equipped with diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, a wide beam for multiple tender spaces, a 7,200-nautical mile range, and flexible cabin arrangements for expedition crew. Other features include a science lab and a certified heli-deck. “The yacht’s helicopter and sub capability mean it can offer assistance in areas with challenging access and little infrastructure,” Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts, told Robb Report . “The design is for the demands of self-sufficient voyages.”

Best Use of Volume: Arcadia Yachts A96

polar class expedition yacht

The A96 mixes the lines, volume, and open-plan layout of Arcadia’s Sherpa series with the speed, joystick maneuverability, and quality of the yard’s A range. It’s the first Arcadia to have an Igor Lobanov-designed interior, as well as a high bow and high deckheads for traversing rough water. But its big differentiator is the 214 gross tonnes of volume and 24-foot beam that generate big volumes—4,300 square feet of usable space, which is 30 percent more than on other similar-sized yachts. Low bulwarks and lateral walkways emphasize the sense of openness.

Best Bow: Project Shackleton

polar class expedition yacht

This 351-foot build from Lürssen has an inverted bow that looks like an eagle’s beak. The shape is designed to slice through waves with much lower vibration through the hull, while also reducing rock and roll in rough seas. Unlike the quasi-research vessel exteriors of many explorers, this vessel is representative of the changing look of many in this growing segment.

Best Multi-Mode Hull: Azimut Magellano 60

polar class expedition yacht

The Magellano 60 isn’t technically an explorer yacht. Think of it as a cruiser  designed for some long-distance travel. But it does have one very interesting feature, what its builder Azimut calls a “dual-mode” hull. The semi-planing shape is designed to optimize fuel consumption (and therefore lower emissions) by about 20 percent (compared to similar-sized vessels) at low and medium speeds. The yacht’s bow is also designed to cut through waves for better seakeeping at a range of speeds. The boat cruises very efficiently at 18 knots but will hit a top end of 26, thus delivering the performance of a planing hull with the benefits of a displacement hull.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ICE & POLAR CLASS HULLS

Updated: Aug 24, 2022

Wednesday 29 June, 2022

Many expedition yachts feature steel hulls that are designed to break through polar ice. When considering an expedition yacht for purchase or explorer yacht new build construction, its important to consider the capability of the yacht in extreme environments.

Ice class simply refers to the notation assigned by a classification society to denote the level of strengthening the yacht has received. However, this has resulted in various classification societies using different grading scales. Lloyds Register for instance uses 4 grades; 1AS, 1A, 1B and 1C whilst the American Bureau of Shipping has 5 grades; A5, A0, B0, C0 and D0.

Polar class however is an attempt to harmonise these various rules by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), and complement the IMO Guidelines for Ships Operating in Arctic Ice Covered Waters .

There are 7 grades within the IACS Polar Class:

It’s worth noting that the yacht manufacturer’s and classification societies may still be using their own Ice Class classifications, and is something to watch out for when considering an expedition yacht for sale or charter.

For any further information on expeditions yachts for charter or sale, classification societies or yachts charter to Antarctica or the Arctic Circle, speak to your yacht broker specialists at SWM Yachts.

The super yacht will reach even the most remote destinations, and will provide up to 40 days of luxury service to all passengers without a port of call. It is scheduled to be launched for service in 2017.

SeaXplorer 65 design details

SeaXplorer 65 is based on Damen’s patented Sea Axe hull design. Designed for both ice and seaway, the vessel features a polar-class double-acting hull, and uses its stern instead of bow to break through the ice.

The hull design enables the yacht to effortlessly cut through the waves, providing minimal discomfort to passengers.

The yacht’s icebreaking performance was tested at the Hamburg Ship Model basin, where the optimised stern was tested for breaking through roughly 1m-thick first-year ice.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, a subsidiary of The Travel Corporation (TTC) launched its new cruise ship SS Maria Theresa, which was named after the Habsburg dynasty’s only female ruler Maria Theresa.

The ship is designed as per the International Maritime Organization’s (IMOs) polar-code standards, which from 2017 mandates that all yachts intending to explore polar regions obtain a Polar Code certificate, which would be recognised through touch IACS polar-class design and construction requirements.

According to Polar Code standards, the yacht is of Category B/first year ice to 70cm and classified by Lloyd’s register as Polar Class 6. The national authorities classified it as a Large Yacht code 3.

The SeaXplorer 65 has an overall length of 65m, moulded beam of 14m and draught of 4m, and weighs approximately 2,000 gross tonnage. It will accommodate 12 guests and 20 crew / expedition staff.

The exterior design for the vessel was provided by Azure Yacht Design and Naval Architecture. Passengers will have the option to choose a leading designers work for the interior of their accommodation.

It will also feature a certified helicopter deck, which can handle a helicopter with of maximum take-off weight of 4.5t, D value of 13.5m, and a helicopter lift of 12m length.

The bridge deck will feature the captain’s cabin, a large wheel house, a state-of-the-art navigation console, the whale watch guest deck, extended and enclosed bridge wings, the main salon, and the dining area.

Facilities aboard SeaXplorer 65

The SeaXplorer 65 will feature a dive centre, which will include dive equipment, a wetsuit drying room, blending mixed gas facilities, and the optional added safety of a recompression chamber.

The luxury decks will provide sun beds and loungers, a swimming pool with underwater lighting, and the Sun Deck Jacuzzi. The lower deck will feature a wellness centre with a hamam, steam room, sauna with rain shower, and fully-equipped gym.

The crow’s nest is 20m above the water level, approximately the height of a seven-storey building, and will offer luxurious panoramic views.

Engine and propulsion

The engine selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems will be compliant with the new IMO Tier 3 rules. The yacht will cruise at a speed of 15kt, and will have a propulsion power of 3,500kW.

A 384-foot Explorer Superyacht?

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • Updated: October 29, 2018

Goliath Series Polar alexis

Alexis is a 384-foot, nine-deck Explorer Yacht Concept from Steve Kozloff, founder and designer of the Goliath Series of polar-class expedition yachts.

If an owner is traveling to northern latitudes, the designer says the full-displacement yacht will have an ice-class steel hull, aluminum superstructure as well heated handrails and doors to mitigate ice buildup.

Standard engines will be four 16-cylinder, Cummins QSK60-M diesel-electric powerplants for 8,000 total hp. For perspective, each engine weighs about 19,300 pounds. That’s big iron. The motors will be matched to four azipods.

Alexis is expected to cruise at 10 knots with a 14.2-knot top-end. The designer says the yacht will have globe-girdling range: 22,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. It’s a trip that requires some serious fuel and Alexis will reportedly hold 432,000 gallons or 1,728 tons of diesel.

For the owner that likes to fly, the yacht is designed with 3,000 square feet of hangar space, which the designer says should accommodate four small helicopters or three medium helicopters. Her garage can reportedly accommodate, not one, but two submarines, several tenders and other assorted water toys.

The superyacht’s design includes a master suite aft with a private pool. The pool will have a retractable cover. A second pool for guests, located on the foredeck, will also have a retractable cover.

Goliath Series Polar alexis

The builder says the explorer-style superyacht will have three master suites, plus seven twin guest staterooms with accommodations for 20 guests for extended voyaging.

Stay tuned for more on this yacht’s development.

Nasen Explorer| Expedition Super Yacht

“Nansen Explorer can go to places others can’t. She has a combination of a strong ice class and a large commercially certified heli deck that can accommodate an expedition helicopter (and will soon support two!). Together, these open up new destinations and opportunities for us, like early spring heli skiing in Greenland. Nansen is a perfect cross between a rugged commercial ship and a yacht. She has the power and grit of a ship accustomed to working deep into the ice, and a bridge team deeply experienced in polar operations. Yet with only 12 guests onboard, she offers the intimacy and personalized nature that you’d find on yachts. Most importantly, Nansen Explorer has a real soul– from working scientific missions to heli-ski trips in Greenland to Antarctic charters, the ship has a purpose and mission. There is really nothing out there quite like her, with this unique mix of capabilities (ice, helicopter, etc.) and service. Joining Nansen Explorer brings you on more than just a yacht charter- she brings you on a true adventure.” – Ben Lyons, EYOS CEO

Nasen Explorer| Expedition Super Yacht

“Nansen Explorer is the perfect launchpad for polar adventures. Strong, stable, adaptable, and capable she is perfectly at home in any high-latitude environment. This is where adventures are made, memories are created and enduring friendships are forged. Every voyage creates a unique story, one that can only be told by those privileged to be in that moment.“ Rob McCallum, EYOS Co-founder

Nasen Explorer| Expedition Super Yacht

“Whether chartered as a support vessel or sailing solo on expedition, Nansen Explorer is an absolute dream for polar region operations. Spending days traveling through sea ice in search of polar bears or emperor penguins is no easy feat; Nansen Explorer does it with style. While her rugged exterior blends well with the remote environments she is often found in, her interior warmth and level of service easily exude a laid-back home-away-from-home vibe. There’s nothing quite like strolling around the lounge in your slippers, spiked hot chocolate in hand, watching the polar landscape go by. For those who like to take polar exploration to the next level: zodiacs, kayaks, a helicopter, and your expedition team await.” – Moira Le Patourel, EYOS Expedition Leader

Nasen Explorer | Expedition Super Yacht

Nansen Explorer is a brilliant platform for exploration and adventure. Fun is at her core and the onboard team’s experience and passion for discovery ensure each expedition is unforgettable. Whether heli skiing in Greenland, diving below the surface in Antarctica or spotting Polar Bears in Arctic Svalbard, the vessel provides a platform for endless experience. – Tamsin Vaughan, EYOS Client Director

THE FORMIDABLE G10 POLAR CLASS EXPEDITION YACHT

The Goliath Series releases another Steve Kozloff expedition yacht design concept - The 53 meter G10 polar class expedition yacht.

polar class expedition yacht

Designed to accommodate 14 guests for extended periods of time in the remotest locations on earth, the G10 medium sized explorer yacht is a purpose-built steel hulled motor yacht with an ice class hull (PC2). Her steel hull has the strength to endure the intensity of driving through moderate multi-year ice conditions. Undoubtedly, making her one of the most formidable yachts of her size.

With the advent of hand-held remote controls, azipods, and bow thrusters, the G10

is designed for minimal crew for a more private cruising experience offering an extreme range of 22,000nm, equating to a 90-day endurance at 10kts.

polar class expedition yacht

The water ballast system can adjust the draft from 15 ft. to as little as 10 ft., enabling the G10 to operate closer to shore. A generous 30 ft. of freeboard at the bow offers a drier on-deck experience in heavy seas.

The 3,462 sq. ft. aircraft hangar can accommodate four small or three medium helicopters. A hangar is a necessity in long-term harsh condition voyages, and a very

useful feature for visiting guests with helicopter. The large flight deck makes air operations possible in harsher conditions. The four externally stored free fall life boats can accommodate the entire crew and guests.

Breaking news, inside the superyacht for history buffs with nearly $1 billion to burn.

It’s for the ultimate seafaring sports fan — and history buff.

A lavish superyacht designed to resemble a centuries-old galleon — and featuring full-sized basketball, tennis and handball courts — is being pitched by a California ship designer.

Steve Kozloff’s The Galleon involves eight decks boasting hoards of extravagant goodies that can be custom-arranged for buyers — who are wealthy enough to foot its roughly $750 million price tag.

The striking nearly 525-foot luxury ship, complete with four massive sails, could hold up to 200 guests and 150 crewmembers, Kozloff said.

“I liked the style of the Old World galleons, especially the glass work at the stern,’’ the ship designer told The Post on Tuesday. “I wanted to imitate that feature.

Illustration of The Galleon.

“Plus, I want to encourage the cruise industry to be more green,’’ he said of the yacht, which would have a hybrid diesel-electric engine in addition to its sails.

The ship’s planned features include the sports facilities, plus a pair of swimming pools and two “lazy rivers.”

It also includes a helipad and 4,500-square-foot hanger for high-flying guests, not to mention room for six speedboats, four submarines and other smaller watercraft.

Additional onboard entertainment could be found at the ship’s cafe, bar and restaurant.

Kozloff said the price depends on how far buyers want to plunk down on the yacht’s interior furnishings, adding that it would take about $750 million for it to be “properly outfitted.” He said the masts alone cost around $140 million.

The Galleon is considered an “explorer’’ yacht, meaning it could cruise the world at more than 20 mph with a steel hull able to cut through ice floes.

Its length is 70 feet less than the world’s longest yacht, the Azzam, which is reportedly owned by royals from the United Arab Emirates.

A Wildly Underseen Survival Horror Series Just Hit Netflix

Careful, it’s cold outside.

polar class expedition yacht

These days, very few TV shows qualify as genuine cult hits, but Season 1 of The Terror fits the bill. For most potential viewers, a drama about 19th-century polar explorers dying of scurvy doesn’t sound like a hot ticket, but for the discerning few, The Terror ’s appeal is all too obvious. First airing on AMC in 2018, it’s a supernatural retelling of Sir John Franklin’s doomed expedition into the Canadian Arctic, blending gritty historical drama with survival horror . And now that it’s on Netflix, a new group of morbid weirdos will get to discover this masterpiece for themselves.

Long before AMC’s dramatization, Franklin’s lost expedition was already a point of fascination among history buffs: a disastrous colonial venture that perished due to a combination of hubris, bad luck, and terrifyingly inhospitable circumstances. Setting out in 1845, Franklin led the Erebus and the Terror from England toward the Arctic Circle, carrying 129 men and a regrettably inadequate range of supplies. Both ships became trapped in ice, and after 19 months with no sign of warmer weather, the crew decided to continue on foot. Several men were already dead, and supplies were dwindling. Over the next year, the rest of the crew was lost from disease, exposure, and starvation.

With a wealth of historical material to work from, writer Dan Simmons fictionalized this tale in his novel The Terror , adding a supernatural monster to the expedition’s plethora of real-life horrors. The resulting TV adaptation is uniquely compelling, balancing the seafaring authenticity of Master and Commander with the visceral dread of HBO’s Chernobyl, another drama that makes the most of Jared Harris, who stars here as Captain Francis Crozier, Franklin’s second-in-command.

Right from the start, The Terror sets up a taut psychodrama rooted in Victorian class divides and logistical arguments. We support Crozier as the sensible but uncharismatic voice of reason, a seasoned explorer who tries to warn Franklin of the coming danger. By contrast, Franklin (Ciarán Hinds) is driven by clueless optimism and religious faith, piling bad decision onto bad decision as he leads his crew to their demise.

Between these diametrically opposed leaders is the frivolous young Commander James Fitzjames (Tobias Menzies), while below decks, the supporting cast is populated by lesser-known but equally impactful character actors, including a breakout role for Adam Nagaitis as a sadistic and manipulative sailor named Cornelius Hickey. As the ships freeze and men begin to perish — some from natural causes, others by attacks from a mysterious creature — this claustrophobic setting becomes a pressure cooker for paranoia, infighting, and betrayal.

Ciarán Hinds The Terror

Don’t get too attached to our heroes.

The lost Franklin expedition was long seen as a great unsolved mystery. The missing explorers sparked feverish public interest in the 19th century, and inspired multiple search parties. None succeeded, although some discovered scraps of evidence that pointed to an ominous conclusion. Only in recent years have historians and archaeologists pieced together a more comprehensive timeline. Franklin’s mismanagement was compounded by unusually harsh weather conditions, and there’s evidence that the crew resorted to cannibalism.

By the 1850s, Indigenous sources had already shared testimony about starving men who almost certainly came from the Franklin expedition, but such tales didn’t match the heroic image the British public envisioned. The Terror acknowledges this bias by emphasizing Franklin’s flaws, and by incorporating indigenous characters. Greenlandic actress Nive Nielsen plays a Netsilik woman who introduces Franklin’s men to the show’s supernatural antagonist, while her role plays into a nuanced depiction of the expedition’s sociopolitical background, touching our heroes’ biases and failings even as we sympathize with their tragic demise.

With its grimy historical production values and heavyweight cast, The Terror holds its own against higher-profile prestige dramas of the 2010s. Yet it’s still rooted in the horror genre, charting a grueling, gory descent into suffering and despair. Even without the presence of a man-eating monster, the crew’s situation is deeply disturbing, bringing historical depth to the bleak appeal of polar horror movies like The Thing or 30 Days of Night .

In the years since its premiere on AMC, The Terror has found a devoted and emphatically nerdy fanbase. The crowning glory of this community is Terror Camp , an annual academic convention where experts present lectures and workshops on polar history. Expanding through word of mouth, it’s very much a cult phenomenon. That’s a fitting tribute to a show with such compelling but niche appeal.

The Terror is streaming on Netflix.
