Two people were killed and 10 others injured on Friday night after two boats collided near Key Biscayne, Fla., an island town a few miles southeast of Miami, the authorities said.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the crash at around 10:30 p.m. by a survivor, who reported that 12 people were in the water about a mile west of Key Biscayne, the agency said in a statement on Saturday .

Coast Guard boat and helicopter crews rescued 10 people and pulled one body from the water, while a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crew recovered another body on Saturday morning, the authorities said.

Two of the survivors were “critically injured,” the Coast Guard said. The conditions of the other survivors were not immediately available. It was also unclear what led to the crash.

Twelve people were in the two vessels at the time of the crash and “they were all launched out of their boats,” said Jose Hernandez, a Coast Guard spokesman. It was not immediately known how many people were in each boat.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were also involved in the search-and-rescue mission. The commission was investigating the cause of the crash, the authorities said.

“The Coast Guard and our local partner agencies quickly responded and exhaustively worked together on this search-and-rescue case,” Lt. Cmdr. Benjamin Tuxhorn of the Coast Guard said.

17-year-old killed, other students injured in Florida Keys boat crash

A 17-year-old girl died Monday and seven other people were injured after a boating accident near Boca Chita Island off Miami on Sunday evening, officials said.

At around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a 29-foot Robalo boat with 14 people onboard struck a channel marker in the Intracoastal Waterway at the south end of Cutter Bank, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a statement.

"All 14 occupants, which included 12 juveniles and two adults, were ejected from the vessel," the statement read. "Good Samaritans and multiple responding agencies recovered the occupants from the water and transported them to land and ultimately to hospitals to receive medical attention if necessary."

Alcohol is not believed to have contributed to the accident, the commission said.

Luciana Fernandez, 17, a high school senior, died of her injuries Monday morning, NBC Miami reported.

Her school, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, recalled her “beautiful smile” in sharing the news of her death.

"Known for her smile, larger than life personality and signature laugh, Lucy was a joy to all who knew her and a shining light at our school," the school said in a statement on Facebook .

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lucy’s parents and younger brother, as well as her family and friends, and we share in their grief during this time of great loss."

The school held a vigil for Fernandez on Monday "to pray for the repose of her soul," according to the post.

Seven other people were injured in the accident — two adults and five 17-year-olds — the fish and wildlife commission said. Their conditions are unknown.

The six other people on the boat, all of them 17 years old, were uninjured.

Most of those onboard were students at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy and Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, all-girls Catholic schools in Miami-Dade County, NBC Miami reported.

The fish and wildlife commission continues to investigate.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, one of the agencies that responded, encouraged boaters to stay safe by having "safety equipment in working condition, including a working VHS radio and life jackets for everyone onboard."

‘Larger than life’ teen killed, ten injured in Key West boat crash

One person has died and ten people were injured in a boat crash near Key West in Florida.

Three passengers were critically injured when the boat capsized after hitting a channel marker near Boca Chita Key in Miami-Dade County , authorities say.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in a news release that 14 people were aboard the boat when it capsized just before 7pm on Sunday, according to the Associated Press . Fire officials said that seven passengers sustained minor injuries.

The Archdiocese of Miami told CBS4 that 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez has died of her injuries. She was a student at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy.

More than 10 fire and rescue units responded to the scene as well as Miami-Dade Police marine patrol units, the US Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the AP noted.

Injured people were pulled out of the water before the other passengers by Miami-Dade fire and police units, Florida Keys News reported. The same report said three children were among those on the boat.

Authorities added that the critically injured were airlifted to a hospital in Miami from nearby Elliott Key Island.

The outlet also shared an email from Sister Carmen T. Fernández, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy president, which was penned to students and parents Monday about Lucy Fernandez’s death.

“She was a young woman of faith, well liked by her teachers and peers, empathetic, faithful and hungry for God,” Fernández, who has no relation to the deceased, wrote. “And though her sudden passing is heartbreaking and has come as a shock to us all, I have absolutely no doubt that Lucy was ready to meet our Lord and enter his Kingdom.”

Boca Chica is an island in the northern Florida Keys within Biscayne National Park offshore of Miami-Dade County.

According to CBS News , Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Captain Juan Garrandes said that “police arrived first and pulled people out of the water – some of them were critical. They were taken to Elliot Key Island where air rescue landed and transported critical patients”.

“Upon our arrival, we joined in with the police department and we treated the rest of the people who were in the water around the boats. We brought them to the island, evaluated them and transported some of them to the hospital,” he added.

The Archdiocese of Miami said in a statement that “the boating accident that occurred yesterday involving students from Our Lady of Lourdes and others is a tragedy. At this moment, and [in] the days to come, please keep each family affected in your prayers, and may all know of the presence of God, especially during this journey”.

Boater dies after Biscayne Bay crash, as passenger says power failure to blame

Florida fish and wildlife conservation commission officials said they're investigating the crash, by chris hush • published september 27, 2023 • updated on september 28, 2023 at 10:25 am.

A man who was driving a boat that crashed in Biscayne Bay has died, his friends said Wednesday, as a passenger who was aboard believes a power failure is to blame for the fatal incident.

The crash happened Tuesday afternoon not far from the Black Point Park and Marina.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the 39-foot Contender boat was traveling at a high rate of speed when it lost control ejecting the three passengers on board.

Three people had to be airlifted to local hospitals from the scene and on Wednesday, two friends confirmed that the man who was driving the boat died from his injuries.

The man, identified by the FWC as 41-year-old Michael Garcia, was a husband and father of three, the friends said.

Garcia was taking the boat out for a test drive and was looking into potentially purchasing it from the owner, who was also on board, the friends said.

A passenger who was on the boat at the time of the crash said the boat lost power at some point, causing it to lose steering and suddenly turn, violently throwing the men overboard.

Footage from the scene Tuesday showed a center console boat with major damage, including a portion of its stern flooded with water. Debris could also been seen in the water nearby.

A good Samaritan who came across the wrecked boat said he did what he could to help the victims.

"Two of them were laying on the deck and one was laying on the post and I checked up on every person to see how they were doing and one wasn't responding and gave them all the water and waited until police showed up," Kenneth Rodriguez said.

Mike's family members and friends said they weren't ready to comment on the incident on camera but said they were heartbroken by his loss.

FWC officials said they're investigating the crash.

  • A passenger aboard the Thriller boat recorded the moment of the high-speed crash
  • 30 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units rushed to the scene at the time of the incident
  • Several passengers are now suing, their lawyers confirmed to PEOPLE

A passenger aboard one of the tour boats that crashed in Miami last month captured the horrifying moment of impact.

In a video shared on Instagram by Mausner Graham Injury Law PLLC (the firm representing several people injured in the crash), the passenger starts recording herself while seated on a Miami tour boat called the Thriller. She pans the camera to reveal the Miami skyline while the boat speeds through the water. The faces of all passengers, including hers, have been blurred to protect their privacy.

As music can be heard playing and other passengers appear carefree in the clip, a second boat, a private charter vessel, then comes into frame in the background clearly heading toward the Thriller.

In the next few seconds, some of the passengers start screaming as it quickly becomes clear that the boats are going to collide.

The video goes dark as the bow of the charter boat smashes into the Thriller.

Both boats were traveling through Fishermans Channel near PortMiami on Sunday, Feb. 10 when the incident occurred. At least 30 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) units rushed to the scene.

Following the incident, MDFR confirmed that 13 passengers were injured and transported to a local hospital. Mausner Graham Injury Law PLLC, which specializes in maritime law, said in an Instagram caption that a total of 29 individuals were affected.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Friday, the law firm said, “Our clients suffered serious and permanent injuries due to the negligence of both vessels. We intend to hold both vessels responsible for this terrible incident.”

Thriller Miami Speedboat Adventures did not immediately reply to PEOPLE's request for comment.

The severity of the crash prompted City of Miami Fire, U.S. Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to also respond to the scene.

At the time of the incident, U.S. Coast Guard officials told NBC 6 South Florida that no passengers aboard the private charter vessel were injured. A vessel inspection requirement was issued for the Thriller before they can operate again, per the outlet.

9 injured after 2 boats collide off Anna Maria Island: Officials

ANNA MARIA ISLAND, Fla. - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is investigating a boat crash that sent nine people to the hospital on Sunday.

According to officials in Manatee County , a 50-foot racer-style boat with two people on board and a 24-foot bow runner boat with nine people, including five children, on board collided in the Intercoastal off Anna Maria Island shortly before 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Authorities say of the nine people taken to the hospital, eight sustained minor injuries while one was critically injured and flown to the hospital.

West Manatee County Fire Rescue says a 41-year-old woman suffered multiple lacerations to her head and face. The two people who were in the other boat were uninjured, FWC said.

3 hospitalized after boat crashes near Black Point Marina; cause under investigation

HOMESTEAD, FLA. (WSVN) - A boat carrying three individuals crashed several miles off Black Point Marina on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a response from officials and good Samaritans.

The incident occurred just after 2 p.m., approximately 2 1/2 miles northeast of the marina. Details regarding the cause of the crash remain unknown at this time.

According to photojournalist Ralph Rayburn, quick-thinking good Samaritans successfully rescued all three occupants from the water.

The victims’ identities and conditions have yet to be disclosed, and the total number of injuries remains uncertain.

7Skyforce provided aerial coverage of the scene as emergency response teams from various agencies, including the Marine Patrol, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and Miami-Dade Police Department, arrived.

Video footage from 7Skyforce also showed a rescue official administering CPR to one of the individuals, as well as a damaged vessel believed to be the one carrying the three individuals.

Air rescue rushed one person to the hospital who was seriously hurt. The other two victims on board were placed on stretchers and were also taken to the hospital but appeared to be OK.

A friend of a witness told 7News off camera that he was on the water, saw a splash, went towards the boat and saw it spinning. According to him, he helped the three people that were on board the boat and pulled one person out of the water.

Another witness, Kenneth Rodriguez, was on another boat that stopped to help the trio.

“As we’re coming back towards Black Point and the bay, we saw a boat spinning in circles, and usually that’s not a good sign,” said Kenneth Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was out on the water and immediately knew something was wrong. He said another boat was already there helping and he did what he could too.

“We gave them water, we just checked up, we just waited until the police came,” he said.

Investigators Tuesday night pulled the damaged boat out of the water as pieces of the vessel were scattered all over the water.

“They said that they lost control, lost power, lost steering,” Rodriguez said.

As investigators continue looking into what caused this incident, Kenneth said, he doesn’t know what happened either but wants to remind people to be as safe as possible on the water.

“I highly recommend everyone wear their lanyard for their kill switch and have all your safety equipment on board,” he said.

Boats involved ordered to stay in port, one to be released upon inspection

The U.S. Coast Guard 7th District - Southeast office named one of the boats as a Thriller tourist attraction boat and the other as the Obelix.

While the Coast Guard did not have a determination on who was at fault in the crash, they said they were investigating the incident along with the FWC. The FWC said it did not immediately have a report in its involvement.

The Coast Guard said that the Thriller boat will be required to undergo an inspection before returning to its operations. The Obelix is under a captain of the port order and deemed inoperable until it meets the stipulations in the order, the Coast Guard said.

Thriller Speedboat Tour and Midnight Sun Boat Charters, the company that lists a private boat named the Obelix on its website, did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment Monday.

14 boaters rescued off Florida gulf coast in 1 week, Coast Guard says

  • Emily Wunderlich Times staff

It was a busy week for the U.S. Coast Guard in St. Petersburg.

Seventeen distress and marine safety calls led to the rescue of 14 boaters since April 12, Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg said in a news release Friday.

It started around 11 p.m. April 12, when Coast Guard watchstanders received a mayday call from three people reporting that their 47-foot commercial fishing boat was sinking 1 mile southwest of John’s Pass. The three people were found floating next to their boat, which was partially submerged and run aground, about 11:10 p.m. They were taken to John’s Pass Marina for care from emergency medical services.

The boaters worked with commercial salvage to coordinate the recovery of their vessel, and 605 gallons of diesel were pumped from the fuel tank Monday. The vessel was towed to Snug Harbor Boatworks on Tuesday, and no pollution was reported, the news release states.

Also on Monday, watchstanders received a distress call from three people aboard a disabled 20-foot vessel about 22 miles west of Egmont Key around 3:30 p.m. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cortez found the vessel around 7:45 p.m. and towed it to Egmont Channel. A search-and-rescue boat crew from Eckerd College towed the vessel from Egmont Channel to the Fort De Soto Boat Ramp.

On Tuesday, dispatchers from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reported a person aboard a “disabled personal watercraft” near the Courtney Campbell Causeway around 3:30 p.m. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg retrieved the person and towed their vessel to the Courtney Campbell Boat Ramp.

On Thursday, Pinellas sheriff’s office dispatchers again contacted the Coast Guard — this time for three people whose boat ran out of fuel about 14 miles west of Egmont Key around 1:45 p.m. A Coast Guard crew from St. Petersburg found the three people aboard the 21-foot vessel around 3:15 p.m. and towed it to Egmont Channel. An Eckerd College search-and-rescue boat crew towed the vessel from Egmont Channel to Fort De Soto Boat Ramp.

Around 2 p.m. Thursday, Coast Guard watchstanders received an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon alert and mayday call from four people aboard a 30-foot vessel 30 miles west of Venice. An aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater found the four people around 3 p.m. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cortez fixed the steering and escorted the vessel to Station Cortez.

No injuries were reported in any of the incidents, the Coast Guard said. In a statement, Capt. Michael P. Kahle, commander of Sector St. Petersburg, stressed the importance of having a communication device on your boat.

“Having a working marine VHF radio, a well-charged cellphone in a waterproof case and a properly registered EPIRB and PLB , can and will help save your life in a time of distress,” Kahle said in the statement.

Man dies after being knocked off boat, into propeller while fishing off Key West

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

KEY WEST, Fla. – A Pennsylvania boater died Sunday after going overboard in the waters south of Key West, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

FWC investigators said Timothy Adam Christianson, 35, was operating the 24-foot Sea Fox with another man on board. The two were fishing at the time, about a half-mile off the coast.

An FWC spokesperson said the boat hit a wave just before 10 a.m., knocking Christianson overboard and into the boat’s propeller, killing him.

“The vessel was in gear, at trolling speed, with no one at the helm,” an FWC investigator wrote in the report.

The incident remained under investigation as of Monday, authorities said.

FBI launches probe into the ship Dali that crashed into a Baltimore bridge as fourth body recovered

The FBI has opened a criminal probe into the collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge in March when a ship crashed into it, while local officials confirmed the recovery of a fourth body.

FBI agents boarded the cargo ship Dali to conduct court-authorised law enforcement activity regarding the crash, an FBI spokesperson said on Monday local time.

The spokesperson said there was no other public information available and the bureau would have no further comment.

A container ship with people on top, and beams of a collapsed bridge in the foreground

The body of a fourth victim was also recovered on Monday after divers spotted what they believed to be a missing construction vehicle, inside which they found the body, the Key Bridge Unified Command said in a statement.

Details surrounding the victim's identity were not made public at the request of the family.

The bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River in the early morning of March 26 , after the massive container ship lost power and crashed into a support pylon.

It killed six men who were working on the span  at the time with the bodies of two still missing.

The investigation into the collapse will focus in part on whether the crew of the Dali left the port knowing the freighter had serious problems with its systems, the Washington Post reported earlier.

Safety investigators have recovered the ship's "black box" recorder , which provides data on its position, speed, heading, radar, and bridge audio and radio communications, as well as alarms.

The city of Baltimore said on Monday it hired two law firms — DiCello Levitt and Saltz Mongeluzzi Bendesky Trial Lawyers — as it considered litigation against the owner, charterer and operator of the ship.

The registered owner of the Singapore-flagged ship is Grace Ocean Pte Ltd , Synergy Marine Group managed the ship and Maersk chartered the vessel.

The head of the US National Transportation Safety Board separately told Congress last week that its investigators had interviewed key cargo ship personnel as part of its probe.

Years to rebuild

Work to clear the wreckage and restore traffic through the Baltimore port's shipping channel continues.

President Joe Biden visited Baltimore and pledged federal help to rebuild the span, an idea some Republican lawmakers have resisted.

Replacing the bridge will likely take years, but authorities have opened two temporary channels to allow some shallow-draft vessels to move around the stricken container vessel.

The US Army Corps of Engineers said two weeks ago that it expected to open a new channel to the Port of Baltimore by the end of April.

When the crash occurred, the Dali was leaving Baltimore en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, with a crew of 21, plus two pilots on board to guide it out of the port.

The same ship was involved in an incident in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016, when it hit a quay as it tried to exit a North Sea container terminal.

An inspection in June 2023 carried out in San Antonio, Chile, found the vessel had propulsion and auxiliary machinery deficiencies, according to data on the public Equasis website, which provides information on ships.

According to Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority, the vessel passed foreign port inspections last June and September.

Two victims remain trapped

The six victims of the bridge collapse were all immigrants from Mexico and Central America who were fixing potholes on the road surface of the bridge when it collapsed.

Dive teams had until now recovered the three bodies of Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, 38, of Honduras, Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, of Baltimore, originally from Mexico and Dorlian Castillo, 26, of nearby Dundalk, originally from Guatemala.

Two other bodies remain trapped beneath the underwater debris in the 15-metre-deep waters. They are Jose Lopez from Guatemala, and Miguel Luna from El Salvador.

Two other workers were rescued from the channel shortly after the collapse, one of whom was hospitalised.

NASA confirms mystery object that crashed through roof of Florida home came from space station

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — NASA confirmed Monday that a mystery object that crashed through the roof of a Florida home last month was a chunk of space junk from equipment discarded at the International Space Station.

The cylindrical object that tore through the home in Naples on March 8 was subsequently taken to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral for analysis.

The space agency said it was a metal support used to mount old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal. The pallet was jettisoned from the space station in 2021, and the load was expected to eventually fully burn up on entry into Earth’s atmosphere, but one piece survived.

The chunk of metal weighed 1.6 pounds (0.7 kilograms) and was 4 inches (10 centimeters) tall and roughly 1 1/2 inches (4 centimeters) wide.

Homeowner Alejandro Otero told television station WINK at the time that he was on vacation when his son told him what had happened. Otero came home early to check on the house, finding the object had ripped through his ceiling and torn up the flooring.

“I was shaking. I was completely in disbelief. What are the chances of something landing on my house with such force to cause so much damage,” Otero said. “I’m super grateful that nobody got hurt.”
