How To Make Your Monaco Yacht Experience Unforgettable

Zoological Garden of Monaco

Monaco, a glittering jewel of the Mediterranean, represents luxury, prestige, and unparalleled experiences. If you’re lucky enough to be planning a yacht adventure in these immaculate waters, expect a realm of wonder.

Envision the sun setting over iconic Monte Carlo, your vessel’s gentle motion, and soft whispers of history on the wind. Ready for an unforgettable Monaco yacht experience? Read on for tips on how to make that possible.

Choose A Premier Charter Service

The right charter service sets the tone for your yacht journey. In such a lavish setting, you deserve unmatched expertise and tailored services. That said, you need a premier charter service such as YACHTZOO with an intimate understanding of the coast and a vast fleet that guarantees a yacht aligned with your preferences.

It’s not solely about the vessel. The crew and onboard amenities shape your experience. It’s the proficient team, ranging from navigators to gourmet chefs, that specializes in meeting sophisticated demands, elevating every moment at sea.

Your yacht is your personal haven. Like any home, you seek comfort, safety, and a touch of luxury, especially amidst Monaco’s grandeur. By opting for a top-tier charter, you ensure an unforgettable voyage.

Delve Into Culture And History

Beneath Monaco’s opulent facade lies deep-rooted history. Before setting sail, delve into its terrestrial wonders. Navigate the serpentine lanes of the old town, absorbing stories whispered by age-old structures. The Prince’s Palace is more than an architectural gem—it chronicles tales of past rulers.

Monaco’s legacy isn’t confined to bricks and mortar. It thrives in markets vending traditional treats, vibrant festivals preserving customs, and locals harboring ancestral tales.

A casual chat, maybe over local wine, reveals insights often overlooked in typical guidebooks. By immersing yourself, you interweave past and present, creating a uniquely Monegasque story.

Embark On A Culinary Expedition

Monaco is home to esteemed eateries like Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse, as well as lesser-known culinary treasures. Start your culinary journey onboard. If a chef graces your yacht, collaborate on a menu, interweaving regional and personal favorites.

Imagine savoring truffle-infused risotto one evening and a local delicacy the next. But the culinary experience doesn’t stop at the yacht’s edge. Often secluded from the bustle, these places offer time-honored dishes.

Complement these flavors with Monaco’s ambiance. Dine under city lights reflecting off the sea or savor a tranquil beachside picnic accompanied by gentle waves. Each bite becomes a cherished memory.

Participate In Signature Events

Timing your yacht journey with Monaco’s hallmark events adds flair. Consider the Monaco Grand Prix , which isn’t merely a race but a fusion of elegance and excitement. From your yacht, you gain a unique perspective of the spectacle.

Beyond high-octane happenings, there’s the Monaco Yacht Show, a mariners’ paradise. It’s not just an exhibition but a chance to spot nautical advancements and mingle with the elite.

Throughout the year, Monaco hosts an array of cultural fests, jazz soirees, ballets, and more. Even a single event can magnify your experience.

Dive Into Marine Adventures

Monaco’s crystalline waters present aquatic marvels. Plunge to encounter vivid marine life, interact with exotic species, or uncover sunken treasures.

For adrenaline junkies, possibilities abound. Jet ski along the picturesque coast, or try parasailing for a birds-eye thrill. Amidst this excitement, the ocean offers serenity. Picture fishing under twilight’s glow or morning yoga on deck, synced with the sea’s pulse. Often, these tranquil instances resonate most.

Unwind And Refresh

Your yacht journey should epitomize relaxation. Think of your yacht as a floating oasis. Enjoy onboard spa offerings, from massages to facials, all set against the backdrop of the endless ocean.

Transform the deck into a haven. Bask under the sun with a drink or stargaze as darkness envelops, soothed by nature’s melodies. The yacht’s gentle motion and rhythmic waves foster peace.

Relaxing isn’t always solitary. Host a movie night or wine tasting, sipping the region’s top vintages. These shared times, either alone or with others, become highlights.

Connect With Nature

Monaco presents pristine natural pockets. Drop anchor near tranquil bays and set foot on unspoiled beaches, offering solace from the crowd.

Explore the verdant terrains around Monaco. Whether a passionate trekker or casual wanderer, nature summons.

Monaco’s allure isn’t limited to panoramas. Indulge in birdwatching or lose yourself in the rhythmic dance of waves. Nature, in its varied forms, rejuvenates.

Create Enduring Memories

Every Monaco moment holds the potential for lasting memories—whether it’s an electrifying escapade, a dish’s nuanced taste, or spontaneous laughter. Memories can dim, so immortalize them. Equip yourself with a camera or drone, capturing panoramas, candid shots, and raw emotions.

Chronicle your journey. Maintain a travel journal , noting down experiences, sketches, or snippets from captivating conversations. Over time, this journal evolves into a prized possession.

Sharing memories deepens them. Engage with your yacht’s crew, exchange tales, or organize themed meals. Collective experiences are stories waiting to be shared.

A Monaco yacht experience goes beyond mere travel—it’s a transformative adventure. As you steer through this voyage, savor each moment. It’s not just about the journey but about weaving a story distinctly yours. With every sunset and sunrise, another page of your captivating tale turns.

Monaco itinerary

Start your Monaco yacht charter in Portofino. Originally a small fishing village shaded by eucalyptus and olive trees, it's become a sunny and relaxing paradise on the Ligurian Riviera. Start your superyacht charter to Monaco here, where you can enjoy the exquisite swimming cove at Paraggi or the summit of Monte Portofino. Drinks at the famous Hotel Splendido overlooking the harbour are a must.

Porto Cervo

Following an overnight crossing, you’ll wake up in the capital of the exclusive Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo. The breathtaking views, crystal-clear water, golf, tennis, great food and night-life are the main attractions of this Meditteranean gem. Blessed with many beautiful sandy beaches, relax and enjoy playing with water toys in the magnificent waters of Porto Cervo. Cruise to Liscia di Vacca for a late lunch or for some tranquillity and relaxation time. This beautiful bay boasts clear turquoise water and is situated between the harbours Porto Cervo and Pevero. When the sun goes, head to Cervo’s lively marina for dinner and drinks in the evening.

Cala di Volpe

Arrive in the morning after a short cruise in Cala di Volpe, a beautiful wide bay fringed with sandy beaches and clear waters that’s perfect for snorkelling and watersports. Spend the day anchored off the bay of Cala di Volpe which is well protected from the wind, Its crowning feature is the spectacular five-star Hotel Cala di Volpe at the end of the bay. This hotel is overlooked by the Pevero Golf Course and on the other side are the fabulous villas of La Celvia.

La Maddalena

Start the day with breakfast on-board before enjoying the water toys in La Maddalena Archipelago. When you’re tired, it’s time to relax between Caprera and Maddalene, nicknamed ‘swimming pool bay’ thanks to its crystal clear waters. Stopover at the marine reserve of Lavezzi, known to divers as ‘Meruville’ due to its impressive tally of resident Meru (or grouper) fish. The reef comprises a series of rocky pinnacles coated in yellow cup coral, ideal for snorkelling. Spend the night anchored between Caprera and Maddalena.

You’ll arrive at St Tropez in time for breakfast. This modern version of a medieval town is popular for the line of stylish yachts along the quay and quaint terrace cafes. The small picturesque streets are perhaps more famous for the multitude of boutiques and restaurants than for any historical significance. Relax and enjoy watersports and swimming in the lovely blue waters of the Bay of St Tropez before cruising to St Tropez Port late afternoon ahead of sunset.

In the morning you'll have a leisurely breakfast whilst cruising to Monaco. Spend the afternoon enjoying watersports, swimming and soaking up the sun. Project TIME

Project TIME yacht exterior

Kicking off our list of the biggest reveals at the Monaco Yacht Show is Project TIME. The 282-ft explorer yacht concept is the brainchild of German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen and Valentin Design.

Suited for cold and warm water expeditions, the ship has been designed to travel everywhere from Antarctica to the South Pacific Islands. Powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system, Project Time would deliver a maximum speed of 16 knots, with a cruising speed of 14 knots, and a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

Boasting a helipad platform, submarine, two lounges and even an onboard German brewery, this is no ordinary yacht. The extravagant vessel also features an extra wide owner’s duplex suite complete with two marble bathrooms and an expansive balcony.

Studio de Voogt was brought in for the project, with the ambitious goal of turning “the inside out and the outside in”. To this end, the design team fitted the yacht with a glass strip running from bow to stern, bathing the decks in natural light.

Unlike many yachts that are plagued by gloomy corridors and claustrophobic living spaces, the interiors onboard Slice are bright and breezy. At the heart of the yacht on the main deck is a sprawling 750-sq-ft atrium flanked by cascading circular balconies, which, according to Feadship is so much more than a lobby and instead becomes “a destination in its own right”.

In a sign of Feadship’s dedication to using the latest technology, Slice would be fitted with a propulsion system powered by four dual-fuel generators modified to run on both methanol and non-fossil diesel (hydrotreated vegetable oil), with the generated power delivered to two Azimuthing pods.

Luisine yacht with helicopter

Our list of the best superyachts on display at Monaco Yacht Show would not be complete without mentioning Lusine. The 196-ft vessel is Heesen’s largest ever steel Fast Displacement motor yacht and features a sleek silhouette with black thermo-bonded dark glass windows to keep out prying eyes.

Perhaps most impressive of all is the touch-and-go helipad on the sundeck which can accommodate an Airbus H-135. Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design was brought in to mastermind the lavish interiors. Lusine comfortably sleeps twelve set across six spacious staterooms, each of which has been thoughtfully adorned with bespoke furnishings and elegant sculptures. The most exclusive abode is the owner’s apartment located up on the bridge deck which has its own staircase to ensure total privacy.

Come Together

Come Together yacht

Next up on our list is the first vessel in Amel’s new 60 Limited Edition Series. Designed by Espen Oeino International and built in the Netherlands, Come Together was delivered to her owner this Spring for an estimated €69.5m (approx. $68.6m).

The gleaming new superyacht spans 196 ft and features a teak deck, steel hull and aluminum superstructure. Winch Design is responsible for the laid-back yet elegant interiors that are reminiscent of a relaxed family home in shades of walnut and bronze.

Come Together has been fitted with a hybrid propulsion system for smooth, quiet cruising and features an expansive sun deck and 157-ft swim platform.

Winch Design and Heesen also unveiled XV67 at the Monaco Yacht Show – a brand new explorer yacht concept that builds on their XVenture design concept from four years ago.

The 187-ft vessel has been given a refreshed layout and updated with the latest technology. While the robust steel hull remains, she is 32 ft longer than her predecessor and the tenders have been moved to the open aft deck freeing up space for even larger guest cabins and an expansive three-story master stateroom.

As seems to be becoming commonplace onboard the newest superyachts, VX67 boasts a helipad (that functions as an al fresco cinema when not in use) and has space to store a personal submarine on deck.

Meyer took the Monaco Yacht Show as an opportunity to share the very first renderings of its sustainable One50 concept. The vessel – which was first unveiled a year ago at the 2021 show – is powered electrically by 25,000 kilowatts enabling her to reach a maximum speed of 23 knots.

After a year long wait to see what One50 could like, the renderings certainly don’t disappoint. Wellness is at the heart of the design; the 492-ft yacht features a retractable swimming pool, massage parlour, sauna and hammam. Other highlights include the top deck which is reserved entirely for the owner’s use and boasts an enormous suite complete with a private terrace.

Four Seasons Yacht

four seasons yacht rendering

Last but by no means least on our roundup of the most impressive vessels unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show is Four Seasons’ first branded yacht . Slated to set sail at the end of 2025, no expense has been spared by the luxury hotel group, with each suite costing a cool $4.2m to build.

The gigantic vessel will be 679 ft long and 88.6 ft wide with 14 decks and a total of 95 rooms and suites. While the initial launch is just one yacht, the order includes the option to add two further ships in the future – amounting to an eyewatering $1.1bn.

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri will build the Four Seasons yacht in Trieste before Tillberg Design of Sweden and London-based Martin Brudnizki are brought in to put their stamp on the interiors. As you would expect from the luxury hotel brand, the yacht will feature an array of facilities including gourmet restaurants, bars, and a full-service spa.

The Ultimate Guide to the Monaco Yacht Show

Yachts in Hercule Harbour in Monaco

The Monaco Yacht Show is a four-day event that takes place each year in Monaco’s deepwater port, Port Hercules, and is Europe’s biggest in-water display of superyachts of over 20 metres long. At any time of the year, impressive yachts are moored in the principality’s harbour, but this annual trade show really does take luxury yachting to a whole new level.

125 one-off superyachts feature in the monaco boat show.

The Monaco Yacht Show was started in 1991 by the French entrepreneur Maurice Cohen and was most recently acquired by British event organiser Informa in 2005. Today, the show has grown to curate an exhibition of 125 superyachts, welcoming over 550 companies from the yachting industry and unveiling 45 new launches in a worldwide premiere.

The Professional Pass is for professionals of the nautical and luxury markets and costs a cool €950, while the Sapphire Experience doesn’t come with a provided price tag, which gives you an idea of the kind of exclusive visit it is. It is reserved for future superyacht charterers or owners and more details and contact information are available on the event’s website .

Something for car lovers, too

In 2016, the Monaco Yacht Show introduced Car Deck, an exhibition space within the boat show to showcase luxury cars. Manufacturers have included Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin and more. Take a look at the yacht show’s layout for information on entrances, lounges, refreshment areas and more.

Arrive by helicopter

In for a penny, in for a pound. Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular ways to travel to Monaco is by helicopter, which could be just what you’re looking for if planning an exclusive trip to the Monaco Yacht Show. Monacair links the Nice airport to Monaco in just seven minutes. In true Monaco fashion, seven minutes will set you back €130!

Monaco’s train station connects with Nice’s main station, too, which provides a slightly more affordable option and of course, you can drive to the principality, as long as the underground parking systems don’t put you off.

MY EXPERIENCE AT THE MONACO YACHT SHOW

MSc in Sustainability and Innovation Management

Magnus A. Frohmann, Danish, and Alain de Ruiter, Dutch, both students in the MSc in Sustainability and Innovation Management program, attended the Monaco Yacht Show a few weeks ago.

The Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) was not just an event; it was a voyage into the future of luxury yachting, and my attendance at MYS2023 was a journey that left an indelible mark on my perception of this industry that I previously knew relatively little about.

Sustainability and Cutting-edge Innovation

With its unwavering commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge innovation, MYS2023 has redefined the very essence of luxury in the yachting world .

One of the highlights of MYS2023 was the return and maturation of the Sustainability Hub—an exhibition area dedicated to showcasing companies specializing in sustainable technologies aimed at reducing the environmental impact of super-yachts . Located in the expansive main exhibition space, this hub served as an incubator for groundbreaking and eco-friendly solutions, one of which was an IUM startup!

Sustainability Hub

This year, the Sustainability Hub continued to bridge the gap between established companies offering tried-and-true sustainable alternatives and budding start-ups with their forward-thinking ideas . The selection process for participants was carried out in collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation , ensuring that only those with genuine and viable sustainable solutions graced the exhibition floor.

As I explored the Sustainability Hub, I couldn’t help but admire the collective dedication to a greener, more responsible future for the yachting industry.

Gaëlle Tallarida , Managing Director of the MYS, aptly emphasized the show’s commitment to sustainability, underlining how the Monaco Yacht Show has been a trailblazer in raising environmental awareness since its pioneering move to join the Carbon Neutral program in 2005 . I had the pleasure of talking to her after one of the many sustainability panel discussions that were a part of the show. The Sustainability Hub, now in its second year, stands as a testament to the show’s relentless pursuit of eco-friendly alternatives.

monaco yacht experience

The Monaco Yacht Show’s partnership with Siemens Energy was, as the sponsor of the Sustainability Hub, an exciting development. This collaboration offered a unique opportunity for all stakeholders to engage with Siemens Energy and delve into the integration of sustainable energy sources and clean fuels into an exclusive Energy Management and Propulsion System designed for electric and hybrid yachts. It’s an initiative aimed at not just reducing but actively controlling emissions—a bold step towards a responsible and environmentally friendly approach throughout the yachting industry.

Networking Opportunities

Networking opportunities at MYS2023 were as enriching as they were abundant. Engaging with exhibitors, partners, and fellow attendees allowed me to delve deeper into the sustainability initiatives within the yachting industry . Collaborations, discussions, and shared insights with industry leaders left an indelible mark on my perspective.

I got to meet not only amazing individuals (some of whom are IUM alumni) but also learned an immense amount about the target group of the MYS and its high-end luxury clientele.

A Knowledgeable Experience

In conclusion, my experience at the Monaco Yacht Show was not just a testament to luxury but a testament to the industry’s commitment to sustainability . MYS2023 showcased advanced design, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology. It reaffirmed that in an industry as opulent as yachting, embracing sustainability is not just a choice but a collective responsibility—a responsibility that I believe will shape the future of luxury in the yachting world.

The Monaco Yacht Show is a voyage into the future, where innovation, luxury, and sustainability converge . It has left an indelible mark on my journey as a student of Sustainability and Innovation Management, reminding me that the future of luxury lies in the hands of those who are committed to treading a sustainable path.

I am immensely grateful to have been granted access to this show and see it as a huge privilege as one of two ambassadors of the MSc in Sustainability and Innovation Management, which many professionals showed immense interest in.

By Steph Loseby   3 October 2022

After another edition of one of the most prestigious events in the yachting calendar, YachtCharterFleet reflects on all the highlights from this year's remarkable Monaco Yacht Show .

Bringing together a dazzling fleet of over 130 superyachts, 74 of which made their debut in Monaco , and around 600 exhibitors, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 has been a roaring success.

Alongside a stellar line-up of superyachts, some of the biggest names in the yachting industry attended the glamorous event in Port hercules, including Lurssen , Feadship , Benetti ,  Azimut  and  Gulf Craft .

The Monaco Yacht Show maintains its lofty position as the most prestigious yacht show that annually boasts a fleet of beautiful  luxury charter yachts  and a variety of captivating superyachts for sale. This year, industry players and prospective clients spent four days immersed in the world of yachting, witnessing the latest innovations, technologies and designs.

The show kicked off with spectacular sunshine beaming down over the remarkable fleet and the atmosphere in Monaco was buzzing with excitement as show-goers walked the time-honoured blue carpet.

As the show went on, the weather became windier but despite talks of rain, the weather held off and continued to remain dry and remarkably sunny come Friday and Saturday.

The show creates a buzz of excitement for all the latest superyacht designs, new innovations and technology but most importantly, the luxurious vessels themselves.

Standout Superyachts

With a strong turnout of vessels at this year’s edition, stealing the hearts of many showgoers was, of course, the outstanding 115m (378ft) motor yacht AHPO . As one of the most exciting new yachts at the show and a recent addition to the charter fleet, the Lurssen yacht was eye-catching, unique and extremely luxurious, showcasing her expansive beach club with hydraulic steps that lead you directly into the sea.

On the same dock, freshly delivered this year, Golden Yacht's 88m (289ft) superyacht PROJECT X definitely caused a buzz and soon became one of the most-talked about yachts at the show. YachtCharterFleet stepped onboard to discover her beautiful Massari-designed interiors, as well as her 7.5-meter by 3-meter glass-enclosed swimming pool on her aft main deck and vast beach club which proved to be outstanding.

Sparking a lot of attention was the impressive 75m (247ft) superyacht KENSHÕ , marking her debut onto the charter fleet in 2022, at this year's show, guests took a tender to view her as she was located out at anchor, just off the coast of Monaco. With her sleek profile and eye-catching reverse bow, this superyacht has many stand-out features, from her beautiful waterside beach club to her vast 6-meter glass-fronted swimming pool. Inside, there is a sense of zen-calm Asian-inspired styling designed around the Owner’s love of the ocean.

Some of the team at YachtCharterFleet were lucky enough to step onboard to enjoy a tour around yacht KENSHÕ, among many other yachts in the top tier of luxury design and craftsmanship.

New hubs for 2022

Back at the port, there was plenty to see and the boardwalks were bustling with people. This year's show boasted a seamless new layout that allowed showgoers to witness the brand-new Adventure Area and Sustainability Hub , alongside its popular Design & Innovation Hub and dockside areas committed to the exhibition of superyachts and tenders. From nautical gadgets, all-terrain vehicles and an abundance of luxury tenders, we viewed a wide range of activities and services targeting the upcoming generation of superyacht clientele.

One of the most popular areas at this year's show was the Yacht Design and Innovation Hub, a place where the world’s most renowned yacht designers convened to showcase their latest projects. Various presentations on design and eco-responsible projects in yachting took place in a conference room upstairs which proved to be informative and eye-opening for all. This year, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub also welcomed the historic exhibitors of the Designer Gallery along the Louis Chiron bend of Port Hercules.

Sapphire Experience

Introduced for the first time last year, the  Sapphire Experience proved to be another successful addition to the show. The experience itself is a bespoke tour program for visitors interested in renting or buying a yacht, with a concierge team dedicated to creating a bespoke program of events tailored to take advantage of all there is to experience at the show in true VIP fashion; including scheduled visits on board yachts, attendance at gala evenings or private cocktails on board various luxury vessels. We also spotted an official Sapphire tender and courtesy car service that provided seamless transport around the show.

In addition, there were also dedicated VIP entrances and lounges for convenience and relaxation throughout the show.

Standout concepts announced at the show

The stands were livelier than ever this year, with a number of top shipyards grabbing the opportunity to reveal their new concepts at the show.

Feadship reveals 85m concept SLICE

The Dutch shipyard Feadship revealed a revolutionary 85m superyacht concept at this year's Monaco Yacht Show, named SLICE. With the vessel’s initial concept coming from design Studio de Voogt, Slice is designed to “turn the inside out and the outside in”, according to the studio’s lead designer, Chris Bottoms and Head of Design, Tanno Weeda.

The yacht tackles one of the biggest owner grievances in yacht design: long hallways, dark interiors and stacked living spaces. The design incorporates a long glass strip from bow to stern which allows natural light to flow through her multiple decks with the aim to reinvent yacht corridors as enjoyable spaces in their own right.

Abeking & Rasmussen presents 86m explorer concept TIME

During the show, the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen  teamed up with Swiss design studio Valentin Design Sur Mesure to present their 86-meter explorer concept TIME.

Described as "one-of-a-kind", explorer yacht TIME is a seven-deck explorer powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system to venture in both cold and warm water. Designed by Valentin Weigand, the yacht is defined by an inverted bow and is home to multiple features that make her stand out from the crowd. From her extra wide duplex Owner's suite to her submarine and observatory deck, TIME will allow guests to make the most out of every moment spent on board.

U-Boat Worx unveils 37.5m underwater superyacht Nautilus

Another memorable concept unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show was the 37.5-meter underwater superyacht model, NAUTILUS, a diesel-electric yacht that can function as both an on-water vessel as well as a submarine. Revealed by Dutch submersible specialist U-Boat Worx, NAUTILUS combines the usual trappings of superyacht life with the unique ability to dive down to 200m (650ft) depths.

A particularly fascinating design, NAUTILUS is able to stay underwater for days at a time, with a surface cruise speed of nine knots and an underwater speed of four knots. What happens when the model is not in use? Well, it can be docked at any quay that can accommodate its 6.5-meter draft.

Fuelled by a number of exciting changes, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 was an exhilarating success for all involved, with a number of industry insiders confirming this year's show overall felt a lot more relaxed with fewer crowds and easier access, with a new buyer focus. With over 30,000 guests and prospective buyers persuing Port Hercules over the four days, admiring the yachting industry in all of its splendor, the show remains the industry's leading premier yacht show.

Arrow Monaco CEO Yerin Hobson

One of the many things I’ve learned after decades of writing about superyachts is…there’s always more to learn. And that’s why I’m so excited Arrow Monaco owner and CEO Yerin Hobson agreed to talk to me recently. Arrow Monaco is yacht and project management company with a team of 40 people (in offices in Monaco and Ft. Lauderdale) who are currently managing almost 20 new builds and five refits.

And since they handle everything from helping an owner find the right yacht designer down to the finest construction cost and detail, I’ve learned just how important they are in the superyacht industry even though they usually operate behind the scenes and below the radar. With roots in the practical skills needed for day-to-day large yacht operations at sea and on shore Yerin’s team can do “almost anything.” And as Yerin explains, when it comes to managing every aspect of superyacht design, construction, and operation, being able to have the technical know-how and experience to do “almost anything” comes in handy on a regular basis.

BS: I’ve been to plenty of shipyards. And I’ve visited lots of yacht design studios. But I never really understood how critical companies like Arrow Monaco are to the superyacht industry. Can you give me an example of how Arrow Monaco manages a new build?

YH: Absolutely. A good example is an 80 meter new build project we signed the day before the Monaco Yacht Show started in September last year. We were appointed at ground zero, so one of the first things we did was write the technical specification along with interior and exterior designer for the entire project.

Then we approached three different shipyards and selected one based on the price and the technical information that they came back with. After that, we entered a four-month R&D phase that includes all the technical documentation and to signing of the build contract. The importance is the detail. Writing the specification from the very start of the project helps us protect the client against future issues. And as of today, there has not been one single variation to contract or cost change on this project.

BS: can you tell me a little bit about how you formed the relationship with a client that allows you to sort of have that ability to be so exacting right from the beginning?

YH: Trust is everything. For this specific client, I went to meet with him when he was chartering a large yacht in the Caribbean. When it comes to building trust, nothing compares with sitting across the table with the client, designers, and shipyard reps.

When the client understands that we really know what we are doing, and you have a team that has been doing this for a long time, it's key. Trust is everything because this relationship is for life. It's not just building the boat. It's then operating the boat. Dealing with refits. It's a lifelong relationship. They can also trust us became we are not brokers and have zero commissions.

BS: So, what happens after you successfully navigate a owner through a multi-year new build phase? They love the boat. Then what? What do you do next?

YH: The next phase actually starts as the management team gets involved on the operational side about two years prior to launch. We help the owner find the right captain and crew along with many other details. And then finally at six months out, the entire crew arrives for training and familiarization.

Naturally, if we have built the boat and know every detail, every change, every system, then logical that we’re the right people to manage the yacht. That way if we have a problem, we supervised most of the systems installation alongside the shipbuilder so we can give the owner all necessary information to find efficient solutions.

BS: You do way more than just new build management, right?

YH: It's broken down into five categories: operational management, crew management, financial management, technical management and safety and security management. The client should be able to see where every cent is being spent, and it should be managed by somebody. I say this because this is our business model is similar to a family office style of operating a yacht that’s 100% transparent. All our accounting, compliance and crew systems are online so our client’s always have the information they need in real time.

I guess the real success story of Arrow how we deal with people. We value our relationships. We respect the people we work with and we strive to keep everybody happy while always getting the job done and most of all, protecting our clients every step of the way.

At the Monaco Yacht Club yachts become ‘smarter’

Yacht Club de Monaco is promoting sustainable solutions for the luxury yachting sector. It is the aim of the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous supported by Ubs, Sindalah, the shipyards MB92 Group and Wider Yachts. Following the success of the first three editions of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous (4th edition 22-23 September 2024), Monegasque consultancy experts, M3 (Monaco Marina Management), continues its quest to promote sustainable solutions.

“We invited shipyards alongside with small companies such as startups, trying to enter the market, and scale-ups, so companies that already have a market and clients. What they have in common is something to offer for implementing innovation and adapt new technologies to protect the environment,” said Jose Marco Casellini, CEO of M3. Among 350 participants, 5 finalists in startup and scale-up categories were selected by a jury of experts for the Smart Innovative Yacht Awards.

Swiss-based company Composite Recycling, born 3 years ago and developing in Europe, won the Award in the startup category. “Basically, what we do is recycling composite materials which make boats and wind turbines and we enable them to become new boats, so we close the loop on component materials,” explained Guillaume Perben, co-founder of the startup. “We feel very good because we won this award for the work we do on the recycling of the boats and making boating sustainable and something that no longer damages the environment,” he added.

On the scale-up side, collecting the prize was Loris Schimanski of Greenboats. The German company is specialised in building boats and fibre composite parts out of natural fibre.

“We feel great and amazed after winning this award and being recognised from all those giants of the industry and to see that the work that we are doing wasn’t for nothing. We’ve been working quite hard in the R&D in the last few years to try and develop the fibers that could stand up to glass fibres and even better of it, lighter. That’s the project we won the award for. It is a panel based solution that can be implemented more easily in big shipyards in order to reduce the carbon footprint,” said Schimanski.

Keeping a close eye at innovation and sustainability is explorer Mike Horn, who took part in the event. “I think people must be smarter before the yachts become smarter. In the last 10-15 years we’ve seen an amazing development in different fields of yachting we’ve seen construction becoming greener and propulsion systems change from combustion engine to electrifying and now hydrogen coming on the market, and we’ve also seen systems to manage water much better. If you think of a yacht becoming a home where you want to live, entertain, play, have fun and work, then yachts must be thought differently than before,” he said.

Organised in collaboration with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the event gathered innovation experts, architects and yachting enthusiasts from all over the world. It is positioned as a unique platform promoting collaboration and the discovery of smart sustainable technologies that will shape the sector’s future.
