  • NSBC Module 1

The Boating Fundamentals skill-builder Powerboating course is your crucial first step to becoming familiar and comfortable with your boat handling skills. Think of it as the first day of Driver's ED.

Just as you wouldn't jump in a car and head out on the highway your first day, it also makes little sense to hop on a boat and expect to figure it out as you go.

On the Water Session

Starting & safety.

  • Centering the wheel
  • Shifting gears
  • Pre-departure Checklist
  • Station Holding
  • and more...

This entire course is taught on the water and will teach you the basic parts of the boat, rules of the water, operating instructions, handling waves & wind, and safety checklists.

Boating is meant to be fun and relaxing, but no one has fun if you have an accident on the water. By taking this course, you can be confident in your knowledge of the basic safety & operating procedures required to run your boat.

Prerequisites: No experience necessary! Recommended Age: 10 - Adult

This skill builder course is Module 1 of a 4-Module study. Completing all modules, along with this online curriculum and test , qualifies you for a Boater Education Certification Card that is valid to rent and operate boats in all 50 States.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do i wear.

– We recommend you dress warm and waterproof. Powerboats can be wet and cold. Wear your wellies and have a wind / rain proof jacket – even on a sunny day!

Do we come back for lunch?

– We usually come back for lunch on both days. But if the weather suits and the trainees are up for a trip, we may take our pack lunches out on the water on day 2 and picnic on a local pier, shore or island.

What is the minimum age?

– The legal age for driving a boat on the plane is 16. So the course are best suited for 16 plus. If you have a 15 year old that is already driving their parents boat, we all them on the course and just miss out the planning bit – you can come back and do that when they are 16 😊

Learn to Boat: Affordable 3-Hour Powerboat Training Courses Come to Jordan Lake on Weekends

Towboatus jordan lake, n.c., and boatus foundation make it easy to boost confidence behind the helm; women-only courses also offered.

Any of the on-water training courses on Jordan Lake can be set up for women only – a great way to spend time learning together.

RALEIGH, N.C., April 22 2024 – If you’ve always wanted to try boating, or you’re a safe boat operator with a desire to grow your powerboat-handling skills or give yourself a boost of confidence behind the helm, now is your chance. TowBoatUS Jordan Lake and the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water have teamed up to offer a series of at-the-helm boating courses on Jordan Lake, now held every weekend through early May. The three-hour on-water courses are affordably priced at $179 each.

The four courses offered follow a National Safe Boating Council modular curriculum. “We follow a sequential learning process that allows you to take the one you need, such as Introduction to Powerboating for beginners, or build upon your skills by continuing with Precision Docking & Boat Handling, Open-Water Boat Handling or Advanced Maneuvers,” said Alan Dennison, program supervisor for the BoatUS Foundation.

Additionally, “Women Making Waves,” and all-women course taught by TowBoatUS Jordan Lake’s Capt. Megan Mosier , offers the same curriculum as Introduction to Powerboating and is the perfect opportunity to spend a half-day learning boat-handling techniques in a supportive environment. For ladies with more boat handling experience, the women-only format can also be applied to any of the modules of instruction.

All courses are held aboard 20-foot single engine powerboats under the watchful eye of a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed instructor. Class size is limited to a maximum of four students per vessel, ensuring everyone gets quality time at the helm.

The minimum age to participate is 16 years old, and there is a two-person minimum per boat for the classes to take place. BoatUS Foundation On-Water Training programs are offered at 15 locations across the U.S. Sign up at BoatUS.org/On-Water
